How safe is Columbia Heights/Mount Pleasant in Washington DC?

I'm familiar w the area, it's very mixed in every way but mostly what I would refer to as working class. I was born & raised their, walked to school & church or did errands for my parents on Condos In Gated Resort Communities Mount Pleasant DC Park Road & Mt. Pleasant Street nearly everyday of my childhood (I'm old, 40 years ago). The area might make my top 10 list now for neighborhoods to live in but it would be #8, 9 or 10. I wouldn't feel very safe walking the streets after dark, even now that it's much safer than when I was 20 yrs old.
