Stephen Coyle: Beach Stories Solo Artist Exhibition

Quidley & Company - Naples, FL Opening March 14, 2018 As the first solo exhibition for the artist at Quidley & Company, Stephen Coyle’s paintings demonstrate his talent of conveying everyday representational beach scenes through a unique perspective and style. Working with themes connected to his time spent living in Rhode Island, the paintings, though representational in nature, utilizes abstraction in forms and brushwork which can be seen in the undefined figures. The brightly lit sun-filled depictions of the beach arose from his observation of “zoo-like” tendencies witnessed. Stephen comments on this continuing theme through his works as, “I want these paintings to be a summation of humanity through our poses, and gestures. The beach is where we are closest to our natural state at birth: naked and vulnerable. The spacing between each figure and each figurative grouping is important. The space and distance between us are where the stories are told. The beach paintings are an examination of us as we walk, crawl, run, crouch, and lie upon the earth. The beach is humanity’s anthill. The building paintings echo the emotions of those that live within and the phone paintings symbolize the loneliness of the human experience.” – Stephen Coyle
