ith the stories you see in the media about everything going on in the world, it’s easy to focus on the negative things, rather than the positive energy that surrounds us. I purposely chose the word “energy” because it is something of a buzz word around Downtown Rochester these days. Energy has many different interpretations, but when we say it, we are referring to the experience you have when you come downtown. You can see it in the stores as they change their windows to reflect what’s new for spring. You can feel it when you visit downtown, greeting your friends and neighbors as they jog, ride and stroll down the sidewalks. And speaking of energy, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention all the great events happening downtown. We have so much to offer year-round, but summer is definitely our season. From the 10th season of the Farmers’ Market to our first 3D showing at Movies in the Moonlight, there are a lot of reasons to come downtown all summer long. As a reminder, all of our events are family-friendly and absolutely free. Want to know more about what’s happening in your downtown? We are constantly looking for new ways to connect with supporters of Downtown Rochester. We invite you to visit us on Facebook and become a “fan” of Downtown Rochester. Interested in what we’re working on at the DDA? Follow us on Twitter. Want to see photos of our special events? Check us out on Flickr. At the DDA, we are committed to making Downtown Rochester the very best it can be but we can’t do it alone. We are constantly looking for fresh ideas and perspectives from you. Whether you just have a quick question or want to volunteer your time, we would love to hear from you. When we all work together, the energy we produce will power Downtown Rochester for years to come. See you Downtown!

Rochester is Going “Green” by Marilyn Trent, Green City Committee Chair

R

ochester’s new Green City Committee consists of environmentally-minded residents and members from local businesses. The committee’s mission is to inspire the community to invest in its future through the adoption of ‘green’ initiatives that are mutually beneficial to the community, and to instill a sense of pride by establishing Rochester as a leader in the ‘green’ movement. The Green City Committee was formed by Rochester DDA board member and local business owner Marilyn Trent who has high hopes for its success and impact on our community. “Sharing the planet with 8 billion people can be a bit overwhelming, and you feel that you have very little control over anything,” explains Trent. “The Green City Committee of Rochester gives people a chance to make a difference by making changes that will affect future generations.” Businesses will band together and pool resources to push green initiatives such as: bringing recycling back to the city with better, more efficient recycling containers; bike racks for trail riders who visit the downtown area, and consolidated shredding resources for local businesses. The committee meets regularly to brainstorm additional ways to make our community more earth-friendly.

“I hope that the Green City Committee can encourage all the businesses in Downtown Rochester to make a few simple changes in their business environment that will encourage the reduce, reuse and recycle philosophy,” explained Green City Committee member Lonna Harlow. Committee member Betty Peterka also shows a great deal of enthusiasm for the newly formed The Bicycle Rack Expansion Program is one of the goals of 2009 initiative. “I’ve been on Pictured: The Green City Committee of Rochester- Front Row, the green boat for years,” Betty Perterka, Marilyn Trent, Roberta Varon, Lonna Harlow, said Peterka. “When Back Row - Ed Granchi, Andreas Trelenberg. Spotlight on…

Greg Swett, Owner of Classic Appreciation How long have you been in business? We have been incorporated for 24 years now but the auto detailing company really started as a “shoestring” business story. I guess it really started when I was about 14 and rode my bike around local neighborhoods to wash cars in people’s driveways; in fact it was many of those first customers that showed me all the steps to properly wash their own cars the way they liked. Some are still customers! In the spring of 1985, we moved in with Rochester Hills Collision. It was there that the owner, Mr. Gary Komasara, taught me an awful lot about business and treating customers and employees right.

Why did you choose Downtown Rochester to locate your business?

In 1988, the company was growing rapidly and we needed a larger facility. I thought that delightful Downtown Rochester was a great “hub” for all our customers from the surrounding communities to find us easily. Our first downtown Rochester location was in a 3600 sq. ft. “drive out basement” facility behind Quik Pik at 102 E Second Street. This was known as “the cave” because the building has no windows and it is partially underground. In 1991, we moved into the present location at 528 N. Main Street in what used to be Houghton Power Equipment, a farm implement business that eventually became the Merry Oldsmobile dealership! Also in 1991, Kasey Hopper, a born and raised Downtown Rochester kid and

a major car nut, joined me and soon became vice president of Classic Appreciation, Inc.

Why did you choose this type of business?

Oh, great question! We happen to love cars and people. I need to be around automobiles everyday or I run a fever…..it gives new meaning to “carsick”. With the price of cars going up so much over the last thirty years or so, I knew people wanted a way to take better care of their vehicles, to refresh and preserve the value of these major investments. Also, detailing makes people fall in love with their cars all over again so I like how our customers feel great driving their “Showroom Fresh” vehicles around.

car. We try to make everyone feel special and have a delightful experience here.

What would you like your customers to remember about your business?

I want people to remember our friendly, professional environment and the fact that we are the absolute experts for all cleaning and detailing concerns on any type of vehicle. I would also like people to remember that we are major car nuts and can help with all kinds of automotive issues.

Please share one memorable experience you have had with your business.

What unique experience do you provide for your customers?

We understand that each customer has different reasons and detailing needs when they come to us and so we are able to customize our services to meet and exceed many different expectations and create raving fans whether we are detailing their minivan or their million dollar collector

We have performed our detailing services for lots of local professional sports stars over the years from old school Vinnie Johnson, Barry Sanders, Ted Lindsay, Steve Yzerman to more recent Chauncy Billups, Sergei Fedorov, Rasheed Wallace, Chris Chelios, Dan Cleary and many others. We never really make a big deal out of celebrity visits; we just treat them to the same World Class service we offer to everyone.

Paint Creek Trail:

Michigan’s First Rail-to-Trail! I

n 1983, the former Penn-Central Railroad was acquired by the newly formed Paint Creek Trailways Commission for $450,000, and named the Paint Creek Trail. Over 10.5 miles of railroad would become Michigan’s First Rail-to-Trail, narrowly beating out the Kal-Haven Trail on Michigan’ west side. The Paint Creek Trail’s southern terminus is in the City of Rochester. It traverses 8.9 miles north and north-west through Rochester Hills, Oakland Township, Orion Township and ends in the Village of Lake Orion. It follows the Paint Creek, a designated trout stream, and is surfaced with crushed limestone to maintain the natural feel. It’s a place for nonmotorized travel and is often used by hikers, walkers, joggers, bicyclists, cross country skiers, equestrians, and nature lovers. We estimate that over 100,000 users enjoy the Paint Creek Trail annually. In recent years, the acquisition and development of trails has become a top priority and most requested resource for municipalities. According to the Michigan Trails & Greenways Alliance, there are over 1,569 miles of trails in Michigan, ranking number two nationally behind Wisconsin. The goal is to connect Michigan through the use of trails, pathways, sidewalks and bike lanes. In terms of connections, the Rochester area is ahead of the curve. Through the use of the Downtown Rochester River Walk, the Paint Creek Trail connects with the Clinton River Trail. Users can travel the Clinton River Trail west to Sylvan Lake, or east to the Macomb Orchard Trail, which will take you to Richmond. With the rising cost of fuel, our local trails have the potential to become more frequently used as transportation corridors.

28

www.DowntownRochesterMI.com

What’s planned for the future of the Paint Creek Trail? The Paint Creek Trailways Commission recently finished a five year Recreation Master Plan, which sets the goals and objectives for Paint Creek Trail enhancements. Our residents and trail users have told us they want more trail connections – to the Polly Ann Trail in the north, and to local businesses and points of interest. We have plans for more cultural enhancements and amenities. We are forming a Friends of

the Paint Creek Trail group this year, and will be holding National Trails Day and Labor Day Bridge Walk events. If you would like to find out more about the Paint Creek Trail, visit our newly redesigned website at www.paintcreektrail.org. You will find information regarding mileage, events, parking, meetings, and plenty of maps! You may also want to visit our new Trail office, located in the former Paint Creek Cider Mill in Oakland Township. Located adjacent to the Trail near Gallagher Road, the Paint Creek Trail office has information, maps and merchandise, as well as restroom facilities open during business hours. A Day (and Night) to Remember

in Rochester...

by Stephanie Liddle, Rochester Resident

N

othing makes me realize more what a wonderful town we live in than having guests here for a weekend. Rochester is such an exciting place with so much to offer, to residents and visitors alike. In one day alone you can do such a variety of things. When we had out-of-town guests we had such a memorable and fun-filled Saturday…all in our own Downtown Rochester! Read this calendar of our “Day in Rochester” to get a taste of what we did. And then head out for you own adventure and…ENJOY!

Early Saturday morning the moms headed out for coffee and donuts. We went to the Home Bakery and got it to go, then strolled around town. Just a block down the hill, we stopped in at the Farmers’ Market and were amazed at all it had to offer. I picked up some flowers and my friend got some great tips on when to pick her cucumbers and tomatoes from the gardeners there. Now that’s some useful “coffee talk.” We strolled down Main Street and shopped (of course.) We browsed everything from dresses at Janet Varner to dressers at Antiques by Pamela. I even picked up a Farmers’ Market cute shirt to wear that night at Dragonfly Boutique. The Leader Dogs joined us in our walk around town, which is such a neat part of Rochester to share with friends. It was a beautiful morning full of activity down the sidewalks. A block off Main we walked through the historic Chapman House that is filled with a variety of lovely home décor items. There, I picked up some great ideas and will be heading back! We ended our shopping excursion with a few surprises from Froggy’s Toy Stop for the kids and

30

www.DowntownRochesterMI.com

Paint Creek some magazines from Lytle Pharmacy next door for my friend’s long drive. After returning home, we grabbed the kids and all took off for a more vigorous walk. We headed out for the Paint Creek Trail that meanders through town. The kids even brought their nets and we took time to catch things in the Paint Creek. As we made our way back from our nature exploration, we all decided that, yes, we were hungry. So we hopped up on the bar stools at Knapp’s Dairy Bar for some seasoned fries, burgers, and, of course, a bunch of icy-cold shakes. Chocolate won out as the favorite.

Chapman House

Andiamo Rochester

Next on our agenda…the moms stopped in at Eugenia’s on Third and had manicures and pedicures. In the meantime, the dads took the kids over to the Painted Pot where they made us lovely handprint coffee mugs to remember the weekend by. Then they headed over to the park, where they walked (I mean ran) around the pond and played on the swings until they were exhausted! (Note: That makes for an easier adult exit later.) Once the babysitter arrived at our house, we started our “grownup” evening adventure. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Kruse and Muer on Main Street, where we sat in the front windows and watched the busy scenery. After our delicious meal, we walked around town while doing a tad bit more window shopping, just because that is always fun! Finally, we decided to pop into Andiamo’s for a little Italian coffee, dessert and music. It was a great way to wind up a wonderful day with wonderful friends! Our guests told us how lucky we are to live in such a vibrant town that is filled with so much activity… and I had to agree with them. So get out there and have fun with your family and explore our wonderful Rochester.
