Quinnipiac University Athletics • 2011-2012 Athletic Awards Program Men’s Cross Country Head Coach: Carolyn Martin Assistant Coaches: Christopher Dickerson, Bart Wasiolek Most Valuable Player: Spencer Mannion Season Summary: After being picked to finish 8th in the NEC Preseason Poll, the Quinnipiac men’s cross country team opened the season with a second place finish at the Stony Brook Invitational. The Bobcats also had top 10 finishes at the Fordham Fiasco and Monmouth Invitational, that followed with Spencer Mannion capturing back-to-back NEC Rookie of the Week honors. The Bobcats finished in the top half of the field at the NEC Championship before finishing 31st at the NCAA Northeast Regional. Season Summary: The women’s cross country team captured its unprecedented seventh Northeast Conference Championship in 2011, as head coach Carolyn Martin and assistant coach Chris Dickerson were honored with Coaching Staff of the Year recognition by the NEC. The Bobcats placed second at the Stony Brook Season Opener and the CCSU Mini Meet, while also winning the Monmouth Invitational. Rebecca White took home a pair of NEC Athlete of the Week honors for the season. Quinnipiac wrapped the year with a 20th-place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regionals. Season Summary: Quinnipiac field hockey clinched a berth in the Northeast Conference Championship for the fourth consecutive year, grabbing the third seed in the tournament. The Bobcats lost to Monmouth, ranked 2nd in the field, in the tournament semifinals. The Bobcats won six of its first eight games of the seasons, with its only two losses coming against nationally-ranked programs, before winning five of seven in NEC play down the stretch.

Season Summary: Quinnipiac men’s soccer finished the regular season at 6-10 overall and 4-6 in the NEC. The Bobcats posted an impressive 5-2 mark at home, with five of those wins coming in a six-game stretch from Sept. 14 to Oct. 9. Down the stretch, the Bobcats suffered a pair of one-goal losses to Fairleigh Dickinson and Mount St. Mary’s before knocking-off Central Conneticut, 2-1. They also lost two of their final three games by a goal. Post-Season Honors: Philip Suprise (All-Northeast Conference First Team, All-North Atlantic Region Second Team)

Season Summary: The Quinnipiac women’s basketball team advanced to the Northeast Conference tournament for the 12th consecutive year after posting an overall record of 2210, including a 13-5 mark in Northeast Conference play. The Bobcats opened the year with consecutive losses before winning nine of its next ten, including victories against Minnesota and St. Mary’s (Calif.) to win the Concord Hilton St. Mary’s Thanksgiving Classic. They then won 11 of their next 13 games before an NEC Semifinal loss to Monmouth. The Bobcats competed in the WNIT for the second time in four years. Season Summary: The Quinnipiac men’s basketball team played in its third consecutive postseason national tournament, as they traveled to Philadelphia to face Penn in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) tournament.The Bobcats had a strong December as they opened NEC play with wins in six of eight conference games, while reproducing the same run in February. Season Summary: Last year’s Northeast Conference Tournament runner-up, the Quinnipiac softball team looks to make their third consecutive appearance in the NEC Tournament with a 12-6 mark in league action. Season Summary: The Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse came together as a team following a 1-4 start to the season, as it opened up NEC action with six consecutive victories, which included a 12-10 in over Mount St. Mary’s on Friday, March 30 in a rematch of the 2011 NEC Championship Game. The Bobcats finished the season as NEC Co-Champions following a 7-2 regular season record and were rewarded with a No. 2-seed in the NEC Conference Tournament. Despite falling to Bryant in the Semifinals, Quinnipiac currently holds the NEC’s second-longest active streak for postseason appearances, making their ninth consecutive trip in 2012.

Season Summary: The Quinnipiac acrobatics & tumbling team dropped its season-opener at home against Maryland on Saturday, Feb. 4, before heading out on the road for four-straight road contests. In a rematch against the Terps just over a month later on Friday, March 9, the Bobcats highest point total of the season (at the time) of 283.000 was bested by the highest score in NCATA history of 290.560. The tightest tri-meet of the season occurred on Sunday, March 11, as Baylor, Fairmont State and Quinnipiac finished the meet separated by just 2.68 total points. On senior night in Hamden on Monday, April 2, Quinnipiac lost by the slimmest of margins to Azusa Pacific, 287.375 – 287.215, despite turning in its highest overall score of the season.

Season Summary: The inaugural season for the Quinnipiac women’s rugby team was a great success, as the team won the program’s first ever victory on Sunday, Sept. 25 against SUNYNew Paltz. Just over two weeks later on Wednesday, Oct. 19, Quinnipiac scored a season-high 49 points against Hofstra, running away with the 49-0 shutout victory. On senior day Sunday, Oct. 23 against Stony Brook, Quinnipiac needed a late score to pull out the come-from-behind tie, as the teams finished the day deadlocked, 11-11. August August 9 The Quinnipiac University men’s cross country team was chosen to finish eighth in the Northeast Conference Pre-Season Poll as announced by the league office on Tuesday, Aug. 9. The Bobcats finished eighth at the 2010 NEC Cross Country Championships and were led by junior Mike Levene (Redding, Conn.), who finished 24th. August 10 The Quinnipiac University women’s cross country team was unanimously picked to finish first in the 2011 Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll as announced by the league office on Wednesday, Aug. 10. The Bobcats won their sixth consecutive NEC women’s cross country championship last season, led by the 2010 NEC Outstanding Performer, Becca White (Natick, Mass.), who won the championship meet with a record-breaking time of 17:17.
Quinnipiac University volleyball junior Taylor Payne (Warwick, N.Y.) and former Bobcat Amanda Armstrong (Waukesha, Wis.) were named to the Iroquois Empire High Performance coaching staff this past summer. Pretournament training took place at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. Payne coached the Youth National Team at the training camp, while Armstrong coached the Select team at the camp and also coached the team at the USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in Tucson, Ariz. August 12 The Quinnipiac University women’s soccer program hosted a high school player clinic for any high school player interested in Quinnipiac University on Friday, Aug. 12. Forty-two high school students attended the clinic, which was conducted by the Quinnipiac women’s soccer coaching staff.
August 16 The Northeast Conference’s coaches have selected the Quinnipiac University volleyball team to finish eighth in the league in the annual preseason coaches’ poll, the league office today announced. The Bobcats look to improve on a 6-24 record, including a 4-12 mark in conference play in 2010.
August 17 The Quinnipiac men’s soccer team was selected to finish seventh in the 2011 Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, as announced by the league on Wednesday, Aug. 17. The Bobcats, who finished the 2010 season 4-11-2 overall (3-6-1 NEC), return 12 players from last season. Top-scorer and assistant captain, junior Philip Suprise (Milwaukee, Wis.), who finished the 2010 campaign with five goals and one assist, has led the Bobcats in goals scored and overall points in each of the last two seasons.

Velaj, one of the Bobcats’ top offensive players, was listed as one of the site’s top potential draft picks in the country. The Stamford, Conn. native also received recognition as one of the top forwards in its preseason shortlists. August 26 Freshman Danielle Allan (Riverdale, N.J.) became the first player in Quinnipiac’s Division I history to score twice in her first career game as the Quinnipiac field hockey team defeated Holy Cross, 6-2, in its 2011 season opener at the QU Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field in Hamden, Conn. Allan also factored into a third goal with an assist, giving her five points and the most a Quinnipiac player has scored in their first collegiate debut. The Bobcats’ six goals are the most they have scored in a season-opener in Division I history and the most scored against a Division I opponent in program history.
August 28 Two days after scoring the first NCAA Division I Field Hockey goal of the 2011 season, Quinnipiac senior Kaitlyn Notarianni (Clarks Summit, Pa.) was featured on GoLakawanna.com in a feature by Tom Robinson. The senior forward is the active leading career goal-scorer on the Bobcats’ roster and ranks 14th all-time in career points at Quinnipiac. Notarianni spoke with Robinson about her expectations for the team this year. August 29 Quinnipiac field hockey freshman Danielle Allan (Pompton Lakes, N.J.) was named the Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week. The first year Bobcat matched the efforts of two-time NEC Player of the Year Virginia Egusquiza of Rider with a two-goal, one-assist outing against Holy Cross on Friday, Aug. 26 in the Bobcats’ 6-2 season-opening win.
September September 3 The Quinnipiac men’s cross country team competed at the Stony Brook Season Opener on Saturday morning. Freshman Spencer Mannion (Brookfield, Conn.) led the Bobcats as he placed fourth with a time of 19:33 in his first collegiate meet. Overall, the host took first place with 18 points, while Quinnipiac finished in second place with 50 points and CW Post came in third with 66 points. The Quinnipiac women’s cross country team ran at the Stony Brook Season Opener on Saturday morning. Junior Becca White (Natick, Mass.) was the Bobcats’ top finisher, placing third overall in 14:19. Stony Brook won the meet with 18 points, while Quinnipiac placed second with 41 points and CW Post took third with 85 points.
September 4 Kaitlyn Notarianni (Clarks Summit, Pa.) scored the game-winning goal in a shootout as Quinnipiac rallied against Yale, 3-2. Yale led, 2-1, at halftime before Kim Cunniff’s (Walpole, Mass.) blast off a corner tied the game and sent it overtime. After two periods of scoreless, overtime play, the game was ultimately decided with Quinnipiac out-shot Yale, 4-2, in the penalty strokeoff. With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 2-1 on the season while Yale drops to 0-2.
September 7 The Quinnipiac University volleyball team will co-host the first-ever Quinnipiac/University of Hartford Tournament on Friday, Sept. 9 and Saturday, Sept. 10. Delaware State, La Salle and Navy will come to the Nutmeg State for the two-day tourney, to be held at legendary Burt Kahn Court on the Mt. Carmel Campus of Quinnipiac University. September 9 Senior Kelby Carey (Surfside, Calif.) and freshman Tierra Allen (Sumter, S.C.) each totaled a team-high 13 kills to lead the Quinnipiac women’s volleyball team to a 3-2 win against La Salle in front of a capacity crowd at Burt Kahn Court on the Mt. Carmel Campus of Quinnipiac University. With the victory, the Bobcats improve to 1-6, while La Salle falls to 2-8. Quinnipiac field hockey sophomore Jess Rusin (Garwood, N.J.) scored a career-best three goals for her first career hat trick as the Bobcats defeated Colgate, 6-0. Quinnipiac improves to 3-1 on the season while Colgate drops to 1-3 on the season. The hat trick was the first for the Bobcats since Kaitlyn Notarianni (Clarks Summit, Pa.) scored three times against Lehigh in last year’s season-opener.

The Bobcats finished with a total of 173 points, while Princeton posted 34 points for the win. Sophomore Brianna Faust (Macungie, Pa.) was Quinnipiac’s top runner, placing 20th overall in 18:55. The Quinnipiac men’s cross country team competed at the Stony Brook Season Opener on Saturday morning. Quinnipiac men’s soccer freshman forward Ola Ogunjobi (London, England) buried his third goal of the contest with just over a minute remaining in regulation, to give the Bobcats a 4-3 edge over Hartford on Wednesday afternoon in Hamden, Conn. Ogunjobi’s three second-half goals guided Quinnipiac (1-3) to its first win of the season, while Hartford (1-5) loses its fifth-consecutive game of the season. September 15 The Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team was selected to finish third in the 2011-12 ECAC Hockey Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The Bobcats collected 93 points and one first-place vote after posting a 22-12-3 overall record (12-9-1 ECAC Hockey) last season.
Quinnipiac University Athletics • 2011-2012 Athletic Awards Program Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey junior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) and sophomore forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) were each honored with an ECAC Hockey Preseason All-League selection, as announced by the league on Thursday, Sept. 15. For Babstock, the 2010-11 ECAC Hockey Player and Rookie of the Year, this was her first Preseason All-League selection while Vigilanti, the 2009-10 ECAC Hockey Rookie and Goaltender of the Year, earned her second-consecutive Preseason All-League nod. Joining Babstock and Vigilanti are four Cornell skaters, including defenders Laura Fortino and Lauriane Rougeau, and forwards Rebecca Johnston and Brianne Jenner. East Stroudsburg University won the 8k course with 63 points, while Quinnipiac finished with 178 points in total. The Quinnipiac women’s cross country team won the 17th Annual Monmouth Invitational on Saturday morning. September 24 The Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team saw six different skaters find the back of the net, as the Bobcats rolled to a 7-0 victory over the Durham Jr. Lightning squad in an exhibition contest at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center on Saturday evening. Junior Brittany Lyons (Canton, Mass.) netted two goals and an assist, while freshman Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) contributed a goal and two assists in the victory. Senior defender William Cavallo’s (Londonderry, N.H.) lone goal in the 53rd minute of play was all the Quinnipiac men’s soccer team needed, as it defeated Loyola (Md.) in a defensive battle, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Quinnipiac Soccer Field. The win improves the Bobcats record to 2-3, while the loss ends the Greyhounds’ four-game winning streak, as they see their record fall to 5-2-1 on the season.

Thirty-nine teams competed in the women’s varsity race, where Boston College won with 38 points, while Quinnipiac finished with a total of 279 points. In front of over 1,000 fans at a jam-packed Burt Kahn Court, the largest home crowd in program history, the Quinnipiac University women’s volleyball team knocked off St. Francis (Pa.) in straight sets, 3-0 (25-18, 25-22 and 25-23) on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Tierra Allen (Sumter, S.C.) led all Bobcats with 11 kills on Sunday afternoon, as the Quinnipiac University women’s volleyball team bounced back with a vital 3-0 (27-25, 26-24 and 25-23) win against St. Francis (N.Y.) at the Genovese Center in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. QU surpassed the 40-plus kills mark for the fifth time this season and attacked at a .241 clip, the highest percentage of the campaign. Junior Kayla Ketcheson (St. Andrews, Manitoba) was tied for 11th place after the first day of the 2011 Sacred Heart Fall Classic. Ketcheson carded an 83 on the first day, and is nine strokes off the leader.
October 24 The Quinnipiac women’s golf team finished 7th out of eight teams at the 2011 Sacred Heart Fall Classic at Great River Golf Classic in Milford, Conn. Kayla Ketcheson (St. Andrews, Manitoba) once again led the Bobcats, this time with an 87 on the second day. Ketcheson finished tied for 11th with a two-day 170 (+26).

The Quinnipiac University softball program held its annual banquet on Saturday, Oct. 15 in honor of the 2010-11 season. Quinnipiac softball head coach Germaine Fairchild announced the 2011 season award winners at the banquet. Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, CA) was named the team’s Most Valuable Player, Ashley Heiberger (Sioux Falls, SD) was selected Defensive Player of the Year, Jordan Paolucci (Lake Mary, FL) was named the Offensive Player of the Year, Lauren Salgado (Covina, CA) was chosen Most Improved Player of the Year, and Joelle Jacobsen (Flemington, NJ) received the Spirit of the Bobcat Award. The Quinnipiac women’s basketball team walked at the 2011 Fairfield County Start! Heart Walk, sponsored by the American Heart Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to “building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke,” on Oct. 15 at Sherwood Island Park in Westport, Conn. The Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey team was ranked 20th in the USCHO.com Division I Poll, released on Monday, Oct. 24. Quinnipiac had been receiving votes in the two previous polls. The Bobcats also landed in the No. 18 spot in the INCH Power Rankings.

The Quinnipiac Women’s lacrosse team visited West Woods School in Hamden last Friday evening as part of the Athletic Department’s Positive Play program. The Bobcats helped out with the school’s Haunted House, assisted with craft projects and did face painting with the students. October 28 The Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse team is sponsoring a fundraiser for the Bawa Health Initiative in conjunction with the team’s home fall lacrosse tournament this coming Saturday, Oct. 29. The Bawa Health Initiative is an independent non-profit charitable organization established to provide primary health care to residents of Bawa.

Led by sophomore Tim Quigley’s (Ridgefield, Conn.) first two goals of the season, the Quinnipiac men’s soccer team defeated Northeast Conference opponent Central Connecticut, 2-1, on Friday afternoon. The win improves the Bobcats’ NEC record to 4-3 and its overall record to 6-7, while the loss drops the Blue Devils to 5-3 in NEC action and 8-8 overall. The Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team earned its first ECAC Hockey victory of the season with a 2-0 shutout victory over Rensselaer on Friday afternoon at Houston Field House. With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 2-5 overall (1-0 ECAC Hockey), while Rensselaer falls to 2-5-2 overall and begins ECAC Hockey action with a 0-1 record.
October 29 The Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team skated to a convincing 5-1 win over ECAC Hockey opponent Union on Saturday afternoon at Messa Rink. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 2-0 in ECAC Hockey action and 3-5 overall, while Union falls to 0-2 in ECAC Hockey and 2-7 on the season overall.
The Quinnipiac men’s cross country team finished sixth out of 12 teams at the 2011 Northeast Conference Championships on Saturday morning at Holmdel Park in Holmdel, N.J. The Bobcats finished the 8k course with a total of 171 points, while Central Connecticut State won the title with 54 points. Freshman Spencer Mannion (Brookfield, Conn.) led Quinnipiac as he placed 27th overall in 27:50.90. October 31 The Quinnipiac women’s cross country team won its seventh consecutive Northeast Conference Championship on Saturday morning at Holmdel Park in Holmdel, N.J. The Bobcats took first place, out of 12 teams, with a total of 44 points and were paced by senior Morgan Roche (Clifton Park, N.Y.), who finished in fifth place overall in 19:02.70. November November 1 The Quinnipiac University men’s ice hockey team defeated Princeton, 5-2, at Hobey Baker Memorial Rink to open the season at 1-0-0 in ECAC Hockey play, while they also improve to 7-2-0 on the season. November 3 Quinnipiac field hockey senior Kimberly Cunniff (Walpole, Mass.) was named the NEC Defensive Player of the Year at the conference’s annual year-end banquet, announced by the conference office today.. Cunniff was also named to the All-NEC First Team, along with teammate Megan McCreedy (White River, South Africa) while Kaitlyn Notarianni (Clarks Summit, Pa.) was named to the All- NEC Second Team.
Quinnipiac University Athletics • 2011-2012 Athletic Awards Program The Quinnipiac University women’s basketball team has been selected to finish sixth in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The poll was announced by the league office on Thursday, Nov. 3 in its annual media teleconference. The Bobcats finished the 2010-11 season in seventh place in the NEC standings with an 11-7 record in conference play and a 14-16 overall record. Quinnipiac clinched a spot in the NEC Tournament for the 11th consecutive year. Three members of the Quinnipiac women’s soccer team were recognized with Northeast Conference post season awards, as announced by the league office on Thursday evening. Graduate student Kyla Miles (Newtown, Conn.) and junior midfielder Shauna Edwards (Southington, Conn.) were named to the All-Conference second team, while freshman Jess Lavoie (Berlin, Conn.) was selected to the NEC All-Rookie team.
November 4 The Quinnipiac women’s soccer team defeated Bryant, 2-0, on senior day in its final game of the 2011 season on Friday afternoon. With the victory, the Bobcats end the year at 5-10-1 overall and 4-6 in the NEC, while the Bulldogs drop to 8-8-3 on the year and 4-5-1 in league action. Senior defender Jordan Elkins (Wasilla, Alaska) netted her third goal in as many games and junior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario) collected her third shutout of the season, as the two helped the Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team continue its strong start in ECAC Hockey action, shutting out Yale, 3-0, on Friday evening at High Point Solutions Arena. The win improves Quinnipiac’s ECAC Hockey record to 3-0 (4-5 overall), while Yale falls to 0-3 in ECAC Hockey Action and 0-6 overall. November 9 Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey freshman forward Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) has been selected to Canada’s U-22 National Team, as announced by Hockey Canada on Tuesday, Nov. 8. The team, consisting of 22 players, will represent Canada at the 2012 Meco Cup in Fussen, Germany, set to take place January 3-8, 2012.
November 10 Quinnipiac University men’s soccer junior forward Philip Suprise (Milwaukee, Wisc.) has been named to the 2011 Northeast Conference Men’s Soccer FirstTeam All-Conference, as announced by the league at its annual pre-tournament banquet on Thursday, Nov. 10. November 12 Sophomore forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) factored in all three Quinnipiac goals, collecting a goal and two assists in the contest, to lead the women’s ice hockey team to a 3-2 victory over ECAC Hockey opponent St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena. The win improves Quinnipiac’s ECAC Hockey record to 4-1-1 and its overall record to 5-6-1, while St. Lawrence falls to 2-3-1 in ECAC Hockey action and 5-4-3 overall. The Quinnipiac men’s cross country team placed 31st out of 33 teams at the 2011 NCAA Division I Northeast Regional Cross Country Championships on Saturday afternoon at the University of Buffalo. Syracuse won the championship meet with a total of 54 points, while the Bobcats compiled 956 points on the day. Junior Mike Levene (Redding, Conn.) led Quinnipiac on the 10k course as he placed 146th in 34:26.7.

The Bobcats received 631 points overall, while Syracuse won the regional meet with a combined 116 points. The duo read to several classrooms and also participated in a variety of other activities. November 16 Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey head coach Rand Pecknold has announced that former New York Ranger goalie Steve Valiquette has been added to the
Bobcats’ coaching staff as the team’s volunteer goalie coach. Valiquette joins the Bobcats after a 15-year professional playing career that included eight seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL).
November 18 Sophomore forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) became the Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team’s all-time points leader in impressive fashion on Friday evening against Colgate, garnering a game-high four points (two goals, two assists), as well as netting the game-winning tally in the team’s 6-2 victory. In what marks her 50th career game played, the reigning 2010-11 ECAC Hockey Player and Rookie of the Year has now earned 75 points in her career (38 goals, 37 assists), passing Quinnipiac’s previous all-time points leader, Vicki Graham, who finished her career in 2007 with 73 career points. The win improves Quinnipiac’s overall record to 6-6-1 (5-1-1 ECAC Hockey), while the loss drops Colgate’s overall record to 4-8-1 (1-4-1 ECAC Hockey). November 19 12 members of the Quinnipiac University men’s basketball team appeared in the scoring column on Saturday afternoon, as the Bobcats cruised past Navy, 78-54, on Lender Court at the TD Bank Sports Center. Senior James Johnson (Queens, N.Y.) led all scorers with 18 points and sophomore Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) posted his third double-double in as many games, lifting QU to its second straight triumph at the Bank. November 20 Sophomore Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) recorded her ninth career double-double on Sunday afternoon, as the Quinnipiac University women’s basketball team knocked off Fairfield University, 64-55, on Lender Court at the TD Bank Sports Center. The Bobcats’ defense held the Stags to 28.6 percent shooting for the game en route to their first win of the 2011-12 campaign.
November 21 Sophomore forward Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) of the Quinnipiac University men’s basketball team has been named the Choice Hotels/NEC Player of the Week, announced on Monday, November 21, 2011 by the league office. Azotam averaged 16 points and 16 rebounds last week, as he helped the Bobcats to a 2-0 record with victories over Yale and Navy.
November 22 Quinnipiac University Men’s Basketball Head Coach Tom Moore and Assistant Coach Eric Eaton recently took part in “Shots From The Heart,” a free-throw shooting contest designed to generate awareness for the growing problem of heart disease. In addition to raising heart disease awareness, the event also pays tribute to the late Skip Prosser, who passed away in July 2007 of a heart attack. Two members of the Quinnipiac University men’s basketball program, senior Kevin Tarca (Skillman, N.J.) and junior Jamee Jackson (Newark, N.J.), traveled to the Shepherd Glen Elementary School on Wednesday afternoon to work with students in Hamden, Conn. Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey sophomore forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) has been named ECAC Hockey Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Tuesday, Nov. 22. This marks Babstock’s third Player of the Week selection of her career.

November 23 Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse head coach Danie Caro has been honored with this year’s Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Association’s (IWLCA) President’s Cup Award, as announced by the organization on Thursday, Nov. 17. The President’s Cup is awarded yearly to the individual who demonstrates the drive and determination towards the development, promotion, and enhancement of intercollegiate women’s lacrosse. In addition to the President’s Cup Award, Caro also received recognition at this year’s banquet for earning her 100th career victory during the 2011 season.
November 25 The Quinnipiac University men’s basketball team brought joy to several athletes on Sunday afternoon, as the Bobcats joined the Connecticut Special Olympics at the QU Recreation Center on the Mount Carmel Avenue campus. Team members took pictures with and cheered on participants at the annual Holiday Sports Classic, which featured hundreds of competitors from all over the state.

Seniors Kristina Del Mistro (East Williston, N.Y.) and Furtuna Velaj (Stamford, N.Y.) of the Quinnipiac women’s soccer team were chosen to play in the 2011 Division I New England Women’s Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) Senior Bowl tentatively scheduled to take place on Dec. 4 at Merrimack College in North Andover, Mass. at 11 a.m. Del Mistro and Velaj represent the Bobcats alongside 21 Division I collegiate women’s soccer players in New England.
Sophomore forward Erica Uden Johansson (Sundsvall, Sweden) made a dramatic return to the ice on Friday afternoon for the Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team, netting the game-winning goal with 5:31 remaining in regulation, as the Bobcats skated to a 4-2 victory over Connecticut in the first round of the Nutmeg Classic Tournament at Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn. With the win, Quinnipiac advances to Saturday’s Championship Game, set for a 7 p.m. start, and improves to 8-7-1 overall. Connecticut falls to 2-12-2 overall on the season.
November 26 Led by tournament mvp, sophomore forward Kelly Babstock’s (Mississauga, Ontario) three points (one goal, two assists) on the evening, the Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team repeated as Nutmeg Classic Tournament Champions with a 3-2 victory over Robert Morris on Saturday at Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn. The night held a special significance for the Bobcats who not only improved to 9-7-1 on the season, but with the win, also gave head coach Rick Seeley his 200th career victory. The loss drops the Colonials to 10-2-1 on the season. With a game-high 17 points, Quinnipiac junior Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) earned Most Valuable Player honors after leading the Quinnipiac University women’s basketball team to a 69-67 win against Saint Mary’s in the Concord Hilton Classic Championship Game on Saturday evening. With the victory, the Bobcats improve to 3-2 on the year, while the Gaels drop to 3-3 overall.

November 29 Sophomore Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) recorded her 12th career double-double as the Quinnipiac University women’s basketball team defeated the University of Massachusetts, 66-63, on Tuesday night at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 4-2 on the year, while the Minutewomen drop to 1-5 overall. Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey sophomores Connor and Kellen Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) were named as two of the Top 60 players in the history of the British Columbia Hockey League.

Just months ago, the Quinnipiac University men’s basketball team was rewarded by the Northeast Conference for their efforts in the classroom. December 3 Senior forward Chelsea Illchuk’s (Lockport, Manitoba) late game heroics, which included a game-tying assist and netting the game-winning goal, lifted the Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team to a 3-2 overtime victory over Yale on Saturday afternoon at Ingalls Rink. The win for Quinnipiac gives it a season series sweep of Yale, as well as a weekend sweep and four points in ECAC Hockey action, improving the team’s overall record to 11-7-1 and 7-2-1 in ECAC Hockey. Yale falls to 1-14-0 overall and 1-7-0 in ECAC Hockey action. Junior Jamee Jackson (Newark, N.J.) led all scorers with a career-high 21 points on Saturday afternoon to lead the Quinnipiac University men’s basketball team past Bryant, 83-72, at the TD Bank Sports Center. The triumph marked the first Northeast Conference win for the Bobcats, who improved to 4-3 in the Division I era against the Bulldogs Junior Felicia Barron (Springfield, Conn.) shattered a Quinnipiac Division I single-game record with 12 steals on Saturday afternoon, as the women’s basketball team handed Bryant University a 67-56 loss in their Northeast Conference opener at the TD Bank Sports Center. The Bobcats tallied 20 steals, the most since Quinnipiac compiled 21 steals at Sacred Heart on February 25, 2006.
Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey senior Yuri Bouharevich (Montreal, Quebec) scored the game-winner with 2.4 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Bobcats a 3-2 ECAC Hockey win against Rensselaer.
December 6 Senior James Johnson (Queens, N.Y.) and sophomore Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) each finished with 15 points on Tuesday evening, as the Quinnipiac University men’s basketball team climbed back to the .500 mark with a 70-61 victory over in-state rival Hartford at Chase Arena. The Bobcats recorded 26 points off of 20 Hawk turnovers to improve to 4-4 overall on the season. Quinnipiac Women’s Soccer Assistant Coach Steve Coxon ran in the 2011 ING New York City Marathon which took place on Nov. 6. Coxon completed his first marathon as he raised $3,000 dollars on behalf of Grassroot Soccer and its efforts with HIV prevention.

Senior Furtuna Velaj (Stamford, Conn.) and junior Shauna Edwards (Southington, Conn.) were recently named New England Women’s Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) All-New England for Division I. Velaj was selected to the All-New England first team, while Edwards garnered second team honors.
December 9 Quinnipiac women’s basketball senior Kari Goodchild and freshman Sam Guastella visited Shepherd Glen Elementary in Hamden, Conn. on Friday, Dec. 9, 2011. The two Bobcat players read several books to the students in kindergarten and first grade at the elementary school. The Quinnipiac University men’s lacrosse team has 13 games on its regular season schedule for the 2012 season. December 20 The Quinnipiac University women’s basketball team defeated New Haven County foe Yale, 68-63, on Tuesday evening at the TD Bank Sports Center, a game that was broadcasted live on NESN. Junior Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) led the way with a season-high 24 points and sophomore Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) posted another double-double en route to the Bobcats second straight win. QU improved to 7-3 on the season, while Yale dropped to 5-5.
December 22 Sophomore Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) registered a career-high 32 points to lead the Quinnipiac University men’s basketball team (6-5) past Niagara on Thursday night at the TD Bank Sports Center. Azotam and the Bobcats held off a late charge from the visiting Purple Eagles en route to an 85-81 triumph and their fourth win at home this season.

January 9 Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey freshman forward Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) and Canada’s Under-22/Development Team settled for a third place finish at this year’s 2012 Meco Cup in Germany this past Sunday, Jan. 8. Kosta collected a goal and two assists in five tournament games, as Canada (3-2) finished behind Finland (4-1) and Sweden (5-0) to earn the bronze medal.

Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey junior Eric Hartzell (White Bear Lake, Minn.) has been named the ECAC Hockey Goalie of the Week, as announced by the league office today. January 12 Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey assistant captain Mike Glaicar (Kamloops, British Columbia) was featured on the Inside ECAC Hockey Radio Show, hosted by Bernie Corbett. The fourth-year Bobcat discussed the team’s recent success as well as his growth as a player and leader on defense for Quinnipiac.
Former Quinnipiac men’s soccer star Freddy Hall ’10 earned his first start for the Northampton Town F.C. Cobblers this past Saturday, Jan. 7, leading the team to its first victory in more than three months with a 2-1 win over Morecambe. Hall stepped in to replace injured goalkeeper Shane Higgs and has now situated himself as the Cobbler’s first-team goalie for the immediate future. The Quinnipiac University women’s basketball team visited the Barnard Environmental Studies School and Katherine Brennan School in New Haven, Conn. on Jan. 12.
James Johnson (Queens, N.Y.), Dave Johnson (Jackson, N.J.) and Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) led a potent attack on Thursday night, as the Quinnipiac University men’s basketball team overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Robert Morris, 78-76, at the Charles L. Sewall Center. Trailing by eight points at the break, the Bobcats connected on 66.7 percent of their second-half field goal attempts to complete the comeback bid.

Former Quinnipiac men’s soccer standout Graciano Brito ’09 has signed with the Rochester Rhinos of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) for the upcoming 2012 season, as announced by the team on Thursday, Feb. 2. With the win, the Bobcats leap over the Blue Devils into fifth place in the Northeast Conference standings. QU improves to 14-10 overall and 7-6 in the league, and has now defeated CCSU in six straight meetings. The Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse team has been selected to repeat as Northeast Conference Champions for the upcoming 2012 season, as announced by the League on Wednesday, Feb. 8. February 11 Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey sophomore Kellen Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) had a career-best five points, including his first career hat trick, while Loren Barron (Glendora, Calif.) scored the game-winning goal, to lead Quinnipiac to a 7-6 ECAC Hockey win at Clarkson. February 13 Freshman forward Ousmane Drame (Boston, Mass.) of the Quinnipiac University men’s basketball team has been tabbed the Choice Hotels/NEC Rookie of the Week, announced on Monday, February 13, 2012 by the league office. Drame, who led the Bobcats to a perfect 2-0 week, earned his third overall award this season. The Quinnipiac University men’s tennis team was picked as the preseason favorite to win the Northeast Conference, as selected by the NEC’s coaches and announced today by the league office. The Bobcats earned four firstplace votes, narrowly edging Fairleigh Dickinson in the census. Quinnipiac’s quest for a 2011 NCAA Tournament bid was stopped just short in the NEC Championship match last season.
February 14 Quinnipiac University Forward Ike Azotam has been named the College Sports Madness NEC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for his exceptional performance on the hardwood last week. College Sports Madness identifies the highest impact players nationally and from each conference in a weekly feature. Azotam led the Bobcats to a perfect 2-0 record, leading the team in rebounding and field goal percentage. The Quinnipiac University softball team was selected to finish second in the 2012 Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, as announced by the league office on Tuesday evening. The defending NEC regular season champion Robert Morris was picked as the favorite to win this year’s title, as the Colonials received six first-place votes.

Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey sophomore forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) and freshman forward Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) were named ECAC Hockey Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, as announced by the league on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Led by sophomore forward Kelly Babstock’s (Mississauga, Ontario) two goals and one assist, the Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team skated to a convincing 6-2 victory over Union on Friday evening at HighPoint Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the goal, Babstock becomes the program’s all-time leader in goals scored, with 44, surpassing the record in less than two full seasons with the squad. The victory halts the Bobcats’ five-game skid and improves their record to 11-8-2 in ECAC Hockey action (16-14-2 overall), while the loss drops Union to 2-17-2 in ECAC Hockey and 4-25-4 overall.

The Bobcats dropped the first game, 3-2, before taking the second contest, 2-0. Quinnipiac moves to 1-1 on the season, while Fordham stands at 3-6. The Quinnipiac University women’s tennis team earned its second consecutive victory on Friday evening, as the Bobcats outlasted Marist, 4-3, in a nonconference showdown at a neutral site. March 3 The Quinnipiac University softball team, now 7-1 on the year, split a pair of non-conference games in the second day of the University of South Florida Under Armour Invitational on Saturday, March 3. QU defeated Miami (Ohio), 3-2, in extra innings, but fell to Bethune-Cookman, 11-2, in a five-inning contest. Junior Felicia Barron (Springfield, Mass.) reached the 1,000-point mark as she registered a game-high 15 points to lift the second-seeded Quinnipiac University women’s basketball team past No. 7 Mount St. Mary’s, 65-61, in a Northeast Quarterfinal game on Saturday afternoon at the TD Bank Sports Center. March 5 The Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey team was featured on College Hockey News following its ECAC Hockey Tournament First Round series win against Brown this weekend. The Quinnipiac University field hockey placed 12 student-athletes on the 2011 Gladiator by SGI/NFHCA National Academic Squad, as announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association today. In addition, Quinnipiac also received a National Academic Team Award by the NFHCA after the team posted a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average. March 12 Freshman Michael Sagl (West Islip, N.Y.) of the Quinnipiac University men’s lacrosse team has been tabbed the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week, announced on Monday, March 12, 2012 by the league office. Sagl put together two tremendous performances on the offensive end in a pair of non-conference games last week.
Over the past few weeks, members of the Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse team have volunteered their services at the Helen Street School in Hamden, assisting its students in their preparation for the Connecticut Mastery Tests (CMT’s). The afterschool program, initiated by former Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse player Laura Iannotti ’11, primarily focused on providing the students with an opportunity to partake in practice reading assessments for the CMT’s. Led by senior Marissa Caroleo’s (North Babylon, N.Y.) career-high eight goals, the Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse team defeated St. Mary’s (Calif.), 18-14, for its first win of the season on Monday afternoon in Denver, Colo. Caroleo’s first goal of the 2012 season also doubled as her 100th career tally, moving her into fourth place on Quinnipiac’s all-time scoring list. The win improves Quinnipiac to a 1-1 overall record on the young season, while St. Mary’s falls to 1-6 on the season. March 13 Junior Andrew Weeden (Martinsville, N.Y.) and sophomore Chris Nelson (Scituate, Mass.) spearheaded the charge for Quinnipiac University men’s tennis on Tuesday afternoon, as the Bobcats handed NC Central a 5-2 loss at Poinciana High School in Kissimmee, Fla. Weeden and Nelson were perfect in competition, taking points in No. 1 and No. 6 singles, while winning in doubles’ action as well.
March 14 Quinnipiac University senior men’s basketball guard James Johnson (Queens, N.Y.) and sophomore forward Ike Azotam (Boston, Mass.) have been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 18 Second Team, announced on Wednesday by the coaches of the association. Johnson takes the honor for the second straight year, while the award is the first for Azotam. Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC, these student-athletes represent the finest basketball players across America. The 240 student-athletes, from 24 districts, are eligible for the NABC Coaches’ Division I All-America teams, to be announced on Tuesday, March 20. The Quinnipiac University softball team defeated San Diego, 3-2, in a nonconference game at the USD Softball Complex on Wednesday night. QU was led by junior Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.), who went 3-for-4 and scored two runs, including the game-winner. With the victory, the Bobcats improve to 10-5 overall, while the Toreros drop to 11-11 on the year. March 15 Junior Andrew Weeden’s (Martinsville, N.J.) win in No. 1 singles proved to be the difference on Thursday night, as the Quinnipiac University men’s tennis team edged Bucknell University, 4-3, at Sanlando Park in Orlando, Fla. With the match all-square at three apiece, Weeden outlasted Gregg Cohenca for the triumph in the last match of the Bobcats’ 2012 Spring Break Trip. The Quinnipiac University women’s tennis team swept the doubles’ segment and took four out of six singles’ matches to defeat Bucknell, 5-2, on Thursday night, the final day of the Bobcats’ 2012 Spring Break Trip. With the win, QU improves to 3-5 overall, building momentum for Northeast Conference play within the next two weeks.
March 16 The Quinnipiac University softball team split a pair of non-conference games in the first day of the San Diego Classic II on Friday at the USD Softball Complex. The Bobcats opened tournament action with a 3-1 win over California State Bakersfield, but lost to San Diego, 9-0, in five innings of play. Quinnipiac, now 11-6 on the year, will face UNLV and San Diego State on Saturday, March
17 in the second day of the tourney.
Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey sophomore Connor Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) was named to the All-ECAC Hockey Third Team while freshman stand-out Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario) earned All-ECAC Hockey Rookie Team honors, as announced by the league office. Jones led the team with 41 points, with 13 goals and 28 assists, while Peca was second with 39 points, on eight goals and team-leading 31 assists. To date, his 39 points lead all freshman in the nation.
March 17 The Quinnipiac University baseball team split a Northeast Conference doubleheader against Wagner at Richmond County Bank Ballpark in Staten Island, N.Y. Wagner took the first game, 7-1, before Quinnipiac responded with a 6-2 win in the second game. The win snaps a nine-game losing streak and brings Quinnipiac to 2-10 overall and 1-2 in the NEC. March 18 Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey’s Scott Zurevinski signed with the American Hockey League’s (AHL) St. John’s IceCaps, the top affiliate of the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Winnipeg Jets.
March 19 Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse freshman attacker Kyra Ochwat (Farmingdale, N.Y.) has been named Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday, March 19. This marks Ochwat’s secondcareer Rookie of the Week selection, as she was previously honored by the league earlier this season on Monday, Feb. 27.
Former Quinnipiac University women’s soccer player, Amanda Bilas (2011), was featured on www.SoccerBanter.org on Friday, March 16. Bilas’ interview was a part of the website’s “Five for Friday” segment, which shares interviews with people that are helping the game of soccer. The piece highlights Bilas’ work in Africa with Grassroot Soccer, non-profit NGO that “uses the power of soccer to educate, inspire and mobilize communities to stop the spread of HIV.”
Quinnipiac University Women’s Soccer Head Coach Dave Clarke has announced the signing of six players to National Letters of Intent for the 2012-13 academic year. Nicole Eriksen (Stamford, Conn.), Shannon Larkin (Burlington, Conn.), Casey Hutchinson (Middlebury, Conn.), Amanda Barroca (North Bellmore, N.Y.), Natalia Grodzki (Bartlett, Ill.), and Jessica Jankowski (Berkeley Heights, N.J.)will join the Bobcats in the fall of 2012. Senior Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) was named Northeast Conference Pitcher of the Week, for the second time this season, as announced by the league office on Monday, March 18.
March 20 The Quinnipiac University men’s and women’s soccer programs earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) Team Academic Award for the 2010-11 academic year.
Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey goalie Dan Clarke (Belleville, Ontario) has signed with the American Hockey League’s (AHL) Bridgeport Sound Tigers, the top affiliate of the National Hockey League’s (NHL) New York Islanders. Clarke will join the team for their game at Binghamton on Wednesday, March 21. March 20 Quinnipiac women’s golf’s Kayla Ketcheson (St. Andrews, Manitoba) led the Bobcats on the final day of the C&F Bank Intercollegiate Tournament at Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va. Ketcheson shot an 85 on the final day for a combined 251 (85-81-85) for the three-day tournament. Ketcheson finished the tournament tied for 68th. March 21 Quinnipiac University men’s basketball and the TD Bank Sports Center were featured in the Boston Globe on Tuesday, March 21, 2012. The story, written by Boston Globe Columnist Bob Ryan, highlights QU’s five-year old arena as the “showcase facility of New England.” March 22 The Quinnipiac University women’s soccer team volunteered with Whitney Manor, a Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, during February and early March. Members of the team did various crafts and activities with the residents.
March 23 The Quinnipiac baseball team split a Northeast Conference doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson, losing the first game 8-4 bouncing back with an 11-4 victory in the second half of the twin bill. The Bobcats go to 3-13 overall and 2-4 in the NEC while Fairleigh Dickinson goes to 5-11-1 overall and 2-4 in league play. Gooley will have a chance to reach the 500-win and 400-win marks when the Bobcats host Fairleigh Dickinson for a doubleheader slated for a 1 p.m. start at Quinnipiac Baseball Field in Hamden, Conn.

March 24 Junior Jay Binkowski (Bethany, Conn.) scored the game-winning goal with just 40 seconds remaining on Saturday afternoon, as the Quinnipiac University men’s lacrosse team upended Binghamton University, 12-11, at the QU Lacrosse Turf Field. The Bobcats held the Bearcats off in the waning moments, leaving Binkowski’s third tally of the game as the difference.
March 25 Senior Marissa Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) and junior Sarah Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) ignited the offense on Sunday afternoon for the Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse team, as Caroleo’s six goals and Allen’s seven assists (both game-highs) helped the Bobcats defeat Northeast Conference opponent LIU Brooklyn, 18-7. With the win, Quinnipiac earns the weekend sweep to improve its NEC record to 2-0 (3-4 overall), while LIU drops to 0-2 in league play and 0-9 overall. Senior Devon Gibney (Hopkinton, Mass.) and sophomore Michaela Tinsley (Shrewsbury, Mass.) each scored a game-high four goals, as the Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse team defeated NEC opponent Wagner, 19-8, for its first conference victory of the season on Friday afternoon at Wagner Field. Junior Sarah Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) also added a team-high five assists, collecting six total points in the game, helping the Bobcats improve to 2-4 (1-0 NEC) on the season. March 27 Sophomore forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) has been named to the 2011-12 New England Division I Women’s Ice Hockey All-Star Team, as announced by the committee on Tuesday, March 27. The recipients, consisting of six forwards, four defensemen and two goaltenders, were chosen by administrators and members of the media. The Quinnipiac University women’s tennis team swept all three doubles’ matches on a windy Tuesday afternoon and went on to defeat Villanova University, 6-1, at the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts on Mount Carmel Avenue. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 4-6 overall on the season.
March 28 Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey junior Zack Currie (Victoria, British Columbia) has been announced as the Bobcats captain for the 2012-13 season. Currie is the 27th captain in the Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey history and the 12th in the program’s Division I history.
Freshman Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) of the Quinnipiac University men’s tennis team has been named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week, announced on Tuesday, March 26, 2012 by the league office. Ambrosio performed very well in two matches last week, helping the Bobcats to a nonconference win against Boston University.
March 30 Led by senior Marissa Caroleo’s (North Babylon, N.Y.) four-point afternoon, the Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse team came back to defeat Northeast Conference opponent Mount St. Mary’s, 12-10, on Friday afternoon at QU Lacrosse Turf Field. With her third goal of the contest, Caroleo became the program’s all-time leader in career goals scored, surpassing Marta Waldron’s (2002) total of 125 tallies. With the win, Quinnipiac remains unbeaten in NEC action (3-0) and evens its overall record to 4-4. Mount St. Mary’s drops to 2-1 in league play and 3-8 overall. Junior Becca White (Natick, Mass.) won the 5,000-meter run as the Quinnipiac University women’s outdoor track team opened the 2012 season in the first day of the 2012 Fred Hardy Invitational on Friday evening. A total of 20 teams competed at the seventh annual invitational, which was hosted by the University of Richmond.
March 31: Sophomore Jennifer Forlenza (Wayne, N.J.) shot a career-best 87 (45-42) to lead the Quinnipiac women’s golf team on the first day of the Mounmouth Hawk Invitational at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Lakewood, N.J. Quinnipiac is currently tied for 5th place out of nine teams competing. Freshman Matt Diehl (Towson, Md.) led a potent Bobcats’ offense with five goals on Saturday afternoon, as the Quinnipiac University men’s lacrosse team upended the Northeast Conference’s preseason favorite Mount St. Mary’s, 12-8, at Waldron Family Stadium. QU’s attack was absolutely stellar on a misty day in Emmitsburg, putting 16 of their 22 shots on target and controlling 14 of 24 face-offs.
April April 1 Quinnipiac women’s golf freshman Hannah Russell finished 29th out of 47 golfers, while Amanda Nagel had her best round of her career, at the Monmouth Hawk Invitational at Eagle Ridge Golf Club in Lakewood, N.J. The Bobcats finished the tournament seventh out of nine teams at the event. Freshmen Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) and Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) won their 20th doubles match of the year and paced the Quinnipiac University women’s tennis team to a non-conference victory at Providence College on Wednesday afternoon. Dassa and Raynor also collected two of the four QU points in singles competition, lifting the Bobcats to their fifth win of the season. April 5 Junior Sarah Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) became the program’s all-time single season assists leader on Thursday afternoon during the team’s 14-4 victory over Saint Francis (Pa.), dishing out a game-high seven assists to give her an incredible 48 helpers in just 10 games played. Allen breaks Katie Latonick’s single season assist total of 44 (set in both 2009 and 2010), and is currently the NCAA leader with 4.80 assists per game. April 6 The Quinnipiac University softball team split with LIU Brooklyn in a Northeast Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Bobcats dropped the first game, 5-4, but rallied in the second outing of the day and won, 13-4. Quinnipiac now stands at 17-10 on the year and 5-3 in NEC play, while the Blackbirds become 12-30 overall and 4-4 in the league.

Sophomore Dylan Webster (Brampton, Ontario) paced the home team in their third straight win, registering four goals and five ground balls in the triumph. April 8 Junior Kayla Ketcheson led the Quinnipiac women’s golf team at the Brown Invitational at the Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington, R.I. Ketcheson finished the first day tied for 38th with an 88 (+16, 43-45). The Bobcats sit in ninth place after the first day. April 9 On a day that saw the Quinnipiac women’s golf team shed 27 strokes from its first day at the Brown University Invitational at Rhode Island Country Club, junior Kayla Ketcheson (St. Andrews, Manitoba) broke the program’s singleround record with a 79 to propel herself into a tie for 30th place.
The Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey team was featured among the Top 25 team’s in the final USCHO.com Division I poll of the 2011-12 season. Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse senior goalie Noelle Martello (Westbury, N.Y.) has been named Northeast Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday, April 9. The selection marks Martello’s first of the season (and second of her career), following a week in which she allowed just eight goals on 26 shots.
Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey sophomore forward Erica Uden Johansson (Sundsvall, Sweden) has rejoined the Swedish National Team for this year’s 2012 International Ice Hockey Federation’s (IIHF) Ice Hockey World Championships, which kicked off tournament play this past weekend in Burlington, Vt. Uden Johansson, who last played for the national team at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, suits up for her country for the first time since suffering an injury a season ago. April 10 Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey head coach Rand Pecknold has announced that juniors Connor Jones (Montrose, British Columbia), Kellen Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) and Cory Hibbeler (St. Louis, Mo.) have been named assistant captains for the 2012-13 season.

April 11 The Quinnipiac University softball team defeated the University of Connecticut, 5-4, in a non-conference comeback bid on Wednesday afternoon at the QU Softball Field. With the victory, the Bobcats improve to 19-11 overall, while the Huskies drop to 17-15 on the year.
April 13 As part of Quinnipiac’s Positive Play Program, the Quinnipiac Women’s Lacrosse team visited Conte Hills West Magnet School in New Haven this past Monday to teach fourth graders about the sport of Lacrosse. The students are in the midst of an in-depth unit on local Native American tribes and have learned that the sport of lacrosse was originally played by many tribes throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region. The win, Gooley’s 399th at Quinnipiac, snaps a 13-game losing streak by the Bobcats, who improve to 4-26 overall and 3-14 in league play. Mount St. Mary’s drops to 11-16 overall and 4-13 in league action. April 14 The Quinnipiac University baseball team swept a Northeast Conference doubleheader against Mount St. Mary’s, taking the first game, 7-2, and the second game, 5-4, in extra innings. Quinnipiac improves to 6-26 overall and 5-14 in the NEC while Mount St. Mary’s drops to 11-27 overall and 4-15 in league play. The win gives Quinnipiac three-in-a-row for the first time since March 25-26, 2011, also against Mount St. Mary’s.
The Quinnipiac men’s cross country team ran at the Brown Springtime Invitational on Saturday, April 14. The Quinnipiac women’s golf team shed 13 strokes from their first round total on the final day of the Roar-EE Invitational hosted by Columbia University at Spook Rock Golf Course in Suffern, N.Y. The Bobcats combined to shoot a 363, a day after shooting a 376, on their way to a 739 (+163) for 14th place.

Quinnipiac University Athletics • 2011-2012 Athletic Awards Program April 17 The Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse team hosted a clinic for over 60 youth players from the North Haven Youth Lacrosse Club on Sunday following their game against Fairfield. The Bobcats taught basic stick skills, individual offensive and defensive concepts, and worked on game situations with the youth players, who ranged in age from 8 – 15 years old. April 18 Junior Alex Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) launched her fifth homerun of the 2012 season as the Quinnipiac University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Manhattan College on Wednesday afternoon. Quinnipiac earned a 3-2 victory in the second match-up of the day after falling, 5-0, in game one. The Bobcats improve to 23-13 on the year, while the Jaspers become 5-26 overall.
April 20 Sunday, April 21, 2012 will be Katie Vashon Day at the Quinnipiac Baseball Field. Katie Vashon was a senior from Hermon, Maine who worked in the Quinnipiac University Sports Information Department for four years before she suddenly passed away after a brief battle with leukemia in 2005. Katie was majoring in public relations and belonged to the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority as well as the School of Communications honorary society Lambda Pi Eta.
Sophomore Corey Morgenstern (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) clinched an opening round victory for the #2 Quinnipiac University men’s tennis team on Friday afternoon, as the Bobcats defeated Robert Morris, 4-2, in the Quarterfinals of the Northeast Conference Championships. With the win, Quinnipiac advances to the semifinals to take on #3 Monmouth University tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m.
Junior Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) collected career win No. 100 as the #2 seeded Quinnipiac University women’s tennis team cruised past #7 Saint Francis (Pa.), 4-0, in the Quarterfinals of the Northeast Conference Championships on Friday afternoon at the Mercer County Tennis Center. With the win, the Bobcats advance to the semifinals to take on #3 Sacred Heart tomorrow afternoon, a 2012 regular-season rematch set for 2 p.m. After another prolific season with the Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team, sophomore forward Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) was named the team’s Most Valuable Player for the second-consecutive season, as announced at the team’s annual end-of-the-year banquet on Friday evening at the TD Bank Sports Center. Joining Babstock with a postseason award was Rookie of the Year recipient Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario), Coaches’ Award recipient, senior Jordan Elkins (Wasilla, Alaska), and Defensive Player of the Year recipient, junior Regan Boulton (Brandon, Manitoba). The Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse team moved one step closer to clinching the No. 1 seed in the Northeast Conference Tournament, downing NEC opponent Central Connecticut, 14-11, on Friday afternoon at QU Lacrosse Turf Field in Hamden, Conn. Senior Marissa Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) led the offense with five goals on the afternoon, while junior Sarah Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.) finished with a game-high six points on one goal and five assists. Quinnipiac improves to 7-1 in NEC action and 8-6 overall, while Central Connecticut drops to 5-3 in league play and 7-8 overall. April 21 Quinnipiac University hosted its 29th annual Senior Awards Ceremony on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the Recreation Center on Mount Carmel Avenue, a banquet that recognizes academic, athletic and extracurricular achievements by selected students. Senior Brett Uttley (Jamestown, R.I.) of the men’s soccer and senior Nicole Lewis (East Amherst, N.Y.) of the field hockey team were honored as the two recipients of the prestigious award. Senior pitcher Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) led the Quinnipiac University softball team in its Northeast Conference split with Robert Morris University on Saturday afternoon at the QU Softball Field. Schwartzburg pitched two complete games as the Bobcats fell to the Colonials, 1-0, in the first contest and won, 3-1, in the second outing of the afternoon. Quinnipiac now stands at 24-15 on the year and 10-6 in NEC play, while Robert Morris becomes 29-19 overall and 13-5 in the league. The Quinnipiac University women’s tennis team put forth a dominating performance in the Northeast Conference Semifinals on Saturday afternoon, as the #2 seeded Bobcats topped #3 Sacred Heart, 4-0, to advance to the championship match tomorrow. The Bobcats will take on the winner of the top bracket between #4 LIU Brooklyn and #1 Fairleigh Dickinson.
Quinnipiac sophomores Connor and Kellen Jones (Montrose, British Columbia) were named as Quinnipiac Men’s Ice Hockey’s Most Valuable Players at the program’s annual awards banquet at the University Club at the TD Bank Sports Center on Saturday, April 21. Freshman stand-out Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario) was named the program’s Rookie of the Year, while assistant captain Mike Glaica (Kamloops, British Columbia) was honored with the Coaches Award. Junior Zack Currie (Victoria, British Columbia), who was announced as the team’s captain for 2012-13, was given the 7th Player Award while Yuri Bouharevich (Montreal, Quebec) earned the Academic Award after posting the team’s highest grade-point average. Quinnipiac men’s soccer head coach Eric Da Costa has announced the five members of the Class of 2016 that will join the Bobcats for the 2012 campaign. Defenders Stevenson Hawkey (Pennington, N.J.), Nick Lasweicz (South-
bury, Conn.), Justin Kody (Northborough, Mass.) and Erik Panzer (Nelson, New Zealand), as well as goalkeeper Marc Meny (Philipsburg, N.J.) will be set to compete next year for the Quinnipiac squad.
April 25 The Quinnipiac University softball team swept the University of Hartford in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the Hartford Softball Field. After picking up a 4-3 win in eight innings, the Bobcats went on to defeat the Hawks, 5-1, in the second contest of the two-game set. With the victories, Quinnipiac improves to 26-15 on the year, while Hartford drops to 8-36 overall. April 26 Graduate student Erin Trotman (Bristol, Conn.) and junior Christina Lasto (Oxford, Conn.) were each named to the National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA) All-American Team, as announced at the end of year banquet on Wednesday, April 25. Senior Morgan Roche (Clifton Park, N.Y.) and junior Becca White (Natick, Mass.) of the Quinnipiac University women’s outdoor track team competed in the first day of the 118th Annual Penn Relays, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania, on Thursday night at Franklin Field.
The Quinnipiac women’s lacrosse team was awarded three of the four major awards at the Northeast Conference’s end-of-year banquet, held on Thursday, April 26 by tournament host Sacred Heart at the Trumbull Marriot. Senior midfielder Marissa Caroleo (North Babylon, N.Y.) took home her second consecutive NEC Player of the Year award, while senior midfielder Devon Gibney (Hopkinton, Mass.) was named the NEC’s Defensive Player of the Year and freshman attacker Kyra Ochwat (Farmingdale, N.Y) earned NEC Rookie of the Year honors. Joining Caroleo and Gibney as NEC First-Team members is fellow senior defender Kim Davis (Darien, Conn.), as well as junior attacker Sarah Allen (Glastonbury, Conn.). April 27 The immensely popular “Bobcats Unleashed in HD, Episode V”, produced by Quinnipiac University, has been nominated for its second straight Boston/ New England Emmy Award in the category of “Outstanding Sports One Time Special”. The 35th Boston/New England Emmy Awards will be presented on June 2, 2012 at Marriot Boston Copley hotel. This year’s first episode, the fifth in the series, showcased Quinnipiac’s “Bobcat Madness”, Parents, Family and Alumni Weekend and Quinnipiac’s Women’s Rugby team’s inaugural season April 28 Graduate student Kyla Miles (Newtown, Conn.) was named the Quinnipiac University Women’s Soccer Player of the Year at the Quinnipiac men’s and women’s soccer program’s annual banquet on Friday, April 27. Miles also received the Players’ Player of the Year accolade, while freshman Jess Lavoie (Berlin, Conn.) was honored as the Young Player of the Year. Additionally, senior Chelsea Smith (Terryville, Conn.) was selected as the Academic Player of the Year and senior Jill Kelley (Simsbury, Conn.) earned Team Player of the Year.
Junior Philip Suprise (Milwaukee, Wisc.) was named men’s soccer Player of the Year at the Quinnipiac men’s and women’s annual banquet on Friday, April 27. Sophomore Brandon Strain-Goode (Toronto, Ontario) earned Player’s Player of the Year accolades, while Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain) was named Newcomer of the Year and Zachary Friedenreich (Edison, N.J.) earned Academic Player of the Year honors. April 29 The Quinnipiac University softball team swept Bryant University in a Northeast Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the QU Softball Field. After the Bobcats earned a 10-2 victory in six innings, Quinnipiac outlasted Bryant, 2-1, in game two. With the league wins, the Bobcats improve to 28-15 overall and 12-6 in NEC action, while the Bulldogs drop to 18-23 on the year and 9-7 in the conference. QU honored its four seniors prior to the start of game one, including Christy Cabrera (West Sacramento, Calif.), Mina Duffy (Piedmont, Calif.), Ashley Heiberger (Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Heather Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.). The Quinnipiac University women’s outdoor track and field team competed at the Yale Springtime Invitational on Sunday, April 29 at Coxe Cage. The Bobcats honored four graduating seniors prior to the start of Sunday’s meet, including Amanda Duggan (Waldwick, N.J.), Julie Lanning (Victor, N.Y.), Kaitie Kelly (Weymouth, Mass.), and Katie Beam (South Windsor, Conn.).
The Quinnipiac baseball team exploded for five runs in the top of the ninth inning, and held-off a late comeback bid by Sacred Heart, to hang on for a 9-8 Northeast Conference win at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn. The Bobcats improve to 6-22 in the NEC and 7-36 overall while Sacred Heart drops to 14-10 in league play and 17-27 overall. Vin Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) was 4-for-5 with a RBI triple that gave Quinnipiac the lead in the ninth while Matthew Siciliano (Ardmore, Pa.) picked up the win in relief. The Quinnipiac women’s golf team finished in 9th place out of 11 teams, ahead of Mount St. Mary’s and St. Francis (N.Y.) at the Northeast Conference Championship at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Bobcats shot a combined 347 for the day and 1039 (344-348-347) for the three-day event, finishing ahead of Mount St. Mary’s and St. Francis (N.Y.).
