For those of us who knew Mr. Lionel (as he was affectionately called by many), no words are really necessary to describe this caring man; and for those who didn’t know him as well, no words would be sufficient to tell his life story. We certainly will try.
Mr. Lionel was preceded in death by his parents Ephraim and Shirley Barnes, 2 bothers Glennis Earl (Nick) Barnes and Charles Barnes, and sisters Eloise Barnes, Geraldine Barnes, Vera Mae Maxine Barnes-McLaughlin, and nephew Charles Barnes.
Dr. Lionel Barnes was born January 29, 1936 in Mt Olive Mississippi, to the late Ephraim and Shirley Barnes. Mr. Lionel graduated from Pascagoula Negro High School (PNHS). He was also a Veteran as he proudly served in the United States Army in Viet Nam, and the Korean War.
Mr. Lionel is survived by his sisters Lenora Reed, Jackson MS, Shirley Laird, Prentiss MS, Carolyn Sue (Bobby) McCain, Houston TX, Diane Barnes, MO, Wanda (Larry) Hanshaw, and Lauretta Barnes his beloved sisterIn-Law; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Mr. Lionel was a highly educated man, graduating with a BS in Chemistry from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, and earned both a master and a doctorate degree from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois. As an academician, Loyola University was Mr. Lionel’s pride and joy. He cherished his work at the university, so much so that he worked at the Loyola Stritch School of Medicine as a Research Scientist and Adjunct Professor for the duration of his illustrious career. Throughout his tenure as an academician, educator and scientist, Mr. Lionel published several articles in science publications pertaining to the Effects of Anesthesia in pre-mature infants; as well as other important research that helped to uncover valuable information for the betterment of mankind. He was a proud member of his beloved Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity.
Mr. Lionel is also survived by his wife Gloria, his kids, Keith Norvel, the oldest, Jason Barnes and Faith Barnes. His step- daughters Gigi Gayle, and Crystal (Eric) Pandy. His ex-wife and friend Dorii Barnes-Palmer, and his grandkids, Kristen (Jeremy) Norvel-Muldavin, Maya Norvel, Austin Norvel, Sophia Norvel, Caleb Whitley, Jaylon Barnes, Leo Barnes, Joshua Pandy, Savannah Petway, Khalil Petway. His great-grandchildren are, Alejandro Otero Norvel, Quinton Norvel, Isabella Norvel, Carter Norvel and Audrey Norvel.
Mr. Lionel’s favorite passion was golfing. If you mentioned golfing, he was ready to play at any time. He and his brother would sit on the phone for hours trading tall stories and golfing stats. His biggest passion, however, was his children. He was so proud of each one of his kids. He would often say, “They are all my kids and grandkids.” It was nothing for him to jump in and take care of one of his grandchildren. Whether it be caring for them, running around playing Santa’s Reindeer while wearing antlers, or sneaking them pieces of candy before dinner. He loved people and was a very charming and kind man. He also loved animals, and always had a cat and dog around the house.
