Urban Complex of Cultural and Creative Industry Personal Academic Work 2014
Urban complex is a collection of diverse buildings of different functions, which also serves different groups of users. To stimulate the vitality of the creative culture industry, I started from considering the circulation organization and aimed at making people converge at a junction. I divided the complex into several units of different directions and combined them through crossing and overlapping. These space can guide people in different directions and gather them in the atrium, which promotes interaction between people and improves commercial vitality as a result.

Between ‘inside’ and ‘outside’ Community Sports Center Personal Academic Work Instructor: Tao Lin 2015
Because of an unequal development , there is a urban village in the center of Hangzhou, which is desperately lacking in green space compared with bulidings around it. This design is to provide a sports center with green roof, to enhance the connection among park, green land and building. The building does not only provide people good inner place for sports, but also allow people play and relax in the outer space. People can walk from the green land to the roof. During walking on the roof, they can enjoy watching others playing sports in the room, creating an interaction between people in interior place and exterior place.

Interactive Interface Maker’s Lab
Personal Academic Work Instructor: AnnaLisa Meyboom 2017 LaSalle College of Vancouver is seeking to expand its school space for providing students with a maker lab, where there will be sharing classrooms, a robot room, wood workshop, a metal room and other space. Offering students sharing space, the maker lab should be designed with a goal of improving their collaboration and communication among students from different majors. The site for the new building is located at the parking lot besides the old building. In order to keep a close connection between the old part and new part, the project’s form is proposed to extend from the old part. As a result, students can reach to every room without walking at outdoor space. Recognizing the school’s need for green space that allows students to have fun and get close to nature, the project responded by designing a small hill besides the new building, which can also block the view of parking cars. The stacking wood structure is designed to create curved interfaces that allow students interact with walls.

2 Extension The new building is an extension of old building
3 Landscape A small hill is created on the site to block the view of parking cars as well as providing green space for students
4 Soil Balance To keep the soil balance on the site, the building is partly semi-underground
Connection between ‘Old’ and ‘New‘ The old building has a compact layout with a loop circulation. The coffee shop is the most active space, located at the southwest corner. Thus the coffee area becomes the bridging space connecting the old and new areas. The new part starts from the coffee area and extends along the main street, bringing the street new active interface.

Structure The concept of structure system is translating column to be ‘column space‘, where people have activities inside it. To interact with both the exterior and interior space, the ‘column space’ is twisted to be curved faces. Every ‘column space‘ is made from stacking wood units. For the whole building, the structure system consists of eight ‘column space’ and grid beam roof as well as several necessary ordinary columns.

Considering the need for green space, the project proposes multiple strategies which combines landscape with architecture. Firstly, a green roof is designed to provide insulation and absorb rainwater. Some plants will hang from the roof and form a green screen as a street facade. The green screen helps to filter sunlight from south and create a comfortable street corridor. Secondly, a slope courtyard is located at the west side of the building, becoming a natural entrance for the basement floor. Thirdly, the small hill behind the new building create a natural system with soil, grass and trees. Students can enjoy the beautiful natural scenery while sitting on the wood structure.

Schoolgirl
There is an interweaving relationship among fashion, personality and architecture. The clothing is a visual statement of people’s personalities, revealing their inner world. However, people do not always express their true personalities or wear what they are really into. Because human beings are social beings, ever yone acts as a certain social role to obey social rules and ‘hide’ his or her true personalities. Mead (1934) believed that self can be divided into two par ts: the “me“ and the “ I“. The “I” is the active component that allows human to active impulsively in an unorganized way while the “me” is tr ying to control the “I” in the social roles. The duality can be reflected in our clothing behaviors. Deep in our hear ts, we sometimes want to dress up in ‘strange’ and ‘different’ styles driven by the “I”. However, the “me” suppresses our impulses and controls the self to behave in an appropriate way to meet social requirements.

Although China is becoming more open and tolerant now, Chinese women are still limited by their social roles at different ages. For example, a schoolgirl is defined to be ‘sweet, innocent, pure’ in the society, and they are required to focus on academics. Thus, personalized clothes are not allowed for students in junior or high schools. Some schools are even strict with students’ hair length. They make a rule that schoolgirls can’t keep long hair or dye their hair. When women become mothers, the society limits them to be ‘mature’ rather than to be girlish or sexy. Women are also viewed as roles that should contribute themselves to their families. As for old ladies, they are defined as ‘grandmothers’ rather than modern or fashionable ladies. The fashion librar y is pro posed to provide a friendly, private and comfor table environment for women to borrow clothes and have special experience of dressing up in any style which expresses their true personalities inside this building. Like a librar y is invented for all humans to have free access to knowledge, this ‘fashion librar y’ is designed with a mission to allow all women ranging from the poor to the rich to own, share and express beauty. The librar y will work according to sharing economy principles, which weaken the ownership and emphasize the access.

The project is proposed to be a fashion library which provide a friendly, private and comfortable environment for women to borrow clothes and have special experience of dressing up in any style which expresses their true personalities inside of this building. Like a library is invented for all humans to have free access to knowledge, this ‘fashion library’ is designed with a mission to allow all women ranging from the poor to the rich to own, share and express beauty. In the building, women will have a sequence experience. The bath comes at first, which indicates that women are saying goodbye their limited social roles and redefining themselves according to their true desire and personalities. Then they step into an area full of clothes closet arranged like on old classic library where they can pick up clothes freely. After that, they go through change room, bags’ room, shoes’ room, accessories’ room, hair salon with wigs and make up room to totally dress up and change their style into a special one. The room of mirrors provide them space to appreciate themselves and the photography room allow them to record their beauty. At the end, which is also the star point of the building, the front desk help people to borrow clothes out or return them to the library. The cleaning and maintenance service will be provided as backup.
In this project,Women are expected to experience a progression process both on appearance and their mind. They change from a limited social sole to a true self who can wear what they like and express themselves to others. Thus the design concept is using sequent spatial experience to strengthen this progression process. It consists 2 strategies: 1 multiple repetitive thick walls clearly define the order of spaces of different programs. 2 To correspond to and strengthen the progression process, the Landscape works as the medium space between different programs to reinforce the ritual sense of shifting from one type of space to another.

Landscape Courtyard
The thick wall idea was developed based on Louis Kahn’s architecture language: service space. Louis Kahn was known for his interest in Scottish Castles, by which he elaborated the distinction between ‘served’ and ‘servant spaces’. So the thick wall in my building can be service space, such as staircases, washroom, change room, corridor. The Landscape design refers to the traditional Beijing courtyard house. The courtyard can build important space order. Based on two strategies, I got the space prototype.

The bathhouse consists of 3 grand hot tubs between concrete walls. Between them, the bamboo cur tain is hanged from the wood roof, filtering the sunlight. The clerestories allow the concrete walls be softly lighten up. Many women are enjoying their time in the hot tub.
May feels a little bit shy, and she goes to the individual private baths, which are located behind the concrete wall. 49
After dr ying her hair, she walks to a lounge where there is a big round window on the wood wall. Looking through the window, she looks at the outdoor water pool. The calm water surface reflects the sunlight.
50
Now she comes into the librar y, which consists of 3 types: the color librar y, the style librar y, the material librar y. The color librar y is 10 meter by 10 meter wide and with 3-floorheight. A circular ramp goes inside. All clothes are hang to display to women and they can choose their loved ones by phone.
Then the clothes will be delivered to the change rooms automatically by a mechanical system. The material librar y includes multiple areas displaying clothes in different types of materials. May is standing at the central one, where a number of clothes are made from newest materials, some clothes are even made by the 3d printer.
51
May dresses herself in a bright pink color. Before reaching to another type of space, she passes by a cour tyard. Some women have fun in the cour tyard, dressing in the way they like.
52
May gets into the beauty salon. The first floor is for women to make-up while the second floor is designed for the nail beauty.
A cour tyard lays between the make-up room and wigs area. Attracted by a big old brown water vat, May walks into the cour tyard. She finds that a rain chain drops from the roof to the water vat, so that the water on roof can be transpor ted downward and collected in the vat.

The selfie studio is a cube room with double-height. She walks from the stair and stops there as she finds a man is looking at her. Her hear t beat speeds up because she wears in a different way and feels ner vous to be looked at for a long time. But after a hesitation time, she eventually finds that the box is single mirrored.
She can look though the box and see people outside. However, the man is only looking at himself. So may can take selfies in a private space, but she feels she’s taking photos in front of others. It’s a risky game, but it’s fun and placable to challenge women’s braveness and it encourages them to be more confident about themselves.
55
After taking many selfies, she walks towards a reading room and once again passes by a courtyard. She feels happy to be close to the tree leaves in an arm’s distance outside the window.
56
She stays at the corridor of second floor for half an hour reading her favorite novel. Now, she’s watching people on the first floor. The first floor allows the public in and she finds those woman wearing dresses they like and feel free to meet with the public.
She feels encouraged by them. Thus She phones her friends to come to this interesting place for an afternoon tea. Now, she feels confident in her new look and isn’t afraid to show herself to others.
57
After finishing the tea, May goes back to take her kid and take back her clothes in the locker’s room. She walks through a courtyard. She also decides to borrow those colorful clothes into her real life.

Back to School Team Competition Work Team Member: Kaiyue Liao Instructor: Bill Pechet 2017 This project is focused on the issue that schools in East Vancouver are going to be closed. Due to demographic shifts, high housing prices and sub-standard education, families are driven to move and/ or seek other schools to educate their children. As a result, these schools are faced with closure problem as a serious lack of students. These schools provide the most extremely important public space for surrounding communities. Their closure not only results in the loss of educational resources, but also means a lost community hub. This project proposes to preserve schools and their green space by re-purposing them as all-age community labs. Part of traditional education space in every school is maintained and they are also adding unique and specialized programs. The design slightly transforms those schools for multiple uses and adds a structure at every site to display the new program in the school. As new community landmarks, these towering structures can form a community network through visual connection both to the local communities and between each other. New community labs not only preserve and activate community public space they also would enhance the educational atmosphere. When the education quality improves and becomes better than that of other areas, parents will bring their kids back to the East Vancouver and these community labs can return to be schools forming several cycles of reconstitution of community space in the city.
61
As the diagram shows, the education quality of east Vancouver is lower than other areas. Schools in this area is faced with closure problem. The project is proposed to transform these schools into community labs for people of all ages. When the education quality improves, parents will bring their kids back to the East Vancouver and these community labs can return to be schools forming several cycles of reconstitution of community space in the city. The transformation of all 12 schools will be a long process. This project envisions 6 schools’ transformation designs. East Vancouver is a gathering place for immigrants of working class and aboriginal people. Many artists and professionals also now dwell in this area. Based on its local culture and industry as well as those unique school programs, the design selects 6 additional programs: (1)Music & Instruments, (2)Aboriginal Culture & Art, (3)Woodworking, (4)Recycling waste electronic into small invention, (5)Robotics, and (6)Ceramic Art.

For the additional program that is focused on “Music and Instruments”, the Landmark is made of multiple pipes which can make a sound. Between the building and the playground, a new outdoor semi-circular stage is shaped by those pipes. While walking through them, people can drag the metal ball in the pipe to produce music.
64
For the additional program that is focused on “Recycling waste electronic into small inventions”, (including DIY racing toy cars), the landmark is inspired by the fourwheel drive track. The environment is designed as a new children play’s area with large racing toy car tracks and spiral slides, located at the old children’s bunker.
For the additional program that is focused on “Aboriginal Culture and Art”, the landmark is inspired by their traditional tree carving art. In the park where the school is located, a series of stumps stand around the tree from lowest to highest, with a security rope net in the center for climbing children. The landmark thus become a park center for walking, relaxing, viewing and entertaining.
For the additional program that is focused on “Woodworking”, the landmark is inspired from the stacking of timbers. In a same stacking way, a viewing structure is designed in the center of the new platform (also works as the main stand). It also connects the exterior space vertically as well as the roof.
For the additional program that is focused on “Robotics”, the landmark is inspired from student assembling robots. Besides the building and basketball court, a robot-arm-like structure is designed to enable people to manipulate the location of the lamp. It can illuminate the basketball court as well as attracting people to walk up to the roof.
For the additional program that is focused on “Ceramic Art”, the landmark is inspired by a traditional brick wall. In the entrance of new coffee shop, a consistent piece of wall is made from stacking bricks, which can display ceramic art crafts as well as guiding people walk along the wall and view the scenery. 65

The transformation is aimed at making space open, flexible, public, through two approaches:1 “Opening up” interior space; 2 “Enriching” exterior space. Some partitions in classrooms of are selectively removed, leaving those space turning into wood workshop classrooms and public open space (coffee shop, kids’ area, reading area). Meanwhile, the original auditorium is transformed into wood processing workshop. The adding structure is added between the building and the playground, activating the interior and exterior space from three aspects: firstly, it works as the stand beside the playground, providing more comfortable gray space for watching community sports games; secondly, it acts as exhibition units for displaying the wood art crafts; lastly, as the platform, it connects the interior space and exterior space on the second floor. The landmark is located in the center, connecting the exterior space vertically as well as the roof.

Folding 2.0 Design Build-Vessel Container Personal Academic Work 2017
Located at seaside of Gambier Island, Folding 2.0 is a wood structure designed for storing kayaks and life jackets for kids coming here in summer. Considered that they come from the sea side with salty sea water and other dirts, the project also provide them with stopwacks for cleaning their feet and hands.

Folding 1.0
Folding 2.0
This project is called Folding 2.0 as it is developed from the first sculpture design idea. The concept is to use straight elements shape a curved space. A series of triangles are arranged in a liner sequence, with bottom vertexes following four straight lines and top vertexes following two space curves. Because the whole model is produced by grasshopper, every part can be controlled in the software, including its length, width and every piece’s width.

Joint 1
Fabrication The whole project is made of repeated units. Every unit consists of two members and a joint. Since the longest piece is more than six meters, which is longer than ordinary wood materials, we considered to stack short pieces to assemble a long one. Every member need four short pieces while every joint need six short pieces. And the section would be like a zigzag. The joint is not only supporting two members, but also connecting another unit by ‘biting’ its members with screw spikes.
Every piece is different in shape and some of them have slope faces. It would be difficult and complexed to cut them manually. Thus they are designed to be cut with a robot. People just need to assemble those pieces and then a building is quickly constructed.
