Research
Formation conceptual bike helmet
This project asked to research, conceptualize, design, and develop a product that I am passionate about. This bike helmet enhances communication and safety for cyclists while encouraging you to wear it for its fashion and comfort. I started by looking at the entire cycling experience.
video recording
A face to face interview is a great way to understand a user’s story, problems, needs and to discover potential opportunities. Each interview lasted about 1 hour and was reviewed later for observations.
voice recording
Phone interviews are another approach to documenting the conversation with users who weren’t local. The recordings helped me review some conversation and pull out the most valuable information.
internet access The internet was another way to access and research articles and resources about biking experiences and bike helmets. It helped me reach broad and various aspects.
book reading
Reading books borrowed from the library gave me another solid resource for finding answers and backing up other information I collected.

After all of my research, I discovered that the majority of cyclists in America display the sporty image while riding. I want to ask, “Can we dress normally while riding a bike?” “Why is the majority of cycling gear and helmets designed for a sporty male aesthetic? The answer is to FOCUS ON the FEMALE while enhancing the communication and safety on the road.

STORY 02: I continued to work on the one
piece pattern; gradually adding the same thickness of the foam and plastic as on a real helmet. I then found that one layer of fabric seems too thin to protect the head.
STORY 01:
I transferred the form study into quick basic prototype models. It helped me to visualize the form in 3D and realize the lack of protection and focus on one direction.
STORY 03: I continued to work on the
one-piece pattern; gradually adding the same thickness of the foam and plastic as on a real helmet. I then found that one layer of fabric seems too thin to protect the head.
STORY 04: I started to add foam pads into
the fabric shell for protection purposes and create ventilation. This prototype became more durable but doesn’t adjust for various head sizes.
STORY 05:
I decided to stay with the one-piece pattern as the soft fabric shell. Then I experimented with various hard shell patterns on top of the fabric shell. The hard shell pattern is a substitution of foam and plastic.

STORY 06: I focused on the fitting and
comfort of this new helmet. Based on the problem from the last helmet model, I created a cut-out pattern from inside to enhance the the size adjustment around the head.
round 2
round 3
STORY 07: I made a another slightly bigger helmet. I sprayed the pattern in a black color to represent foam and silver color to represent plastic. I then sewed the pattern and LED program parts on the helmet.
STORY 08: This is the final model I was
going to finish. I asked various females to try it on and they all feel very comfortable. It needs more layers to build on to mimic the thinness of the foam and plastic.

Flavor Taste sensation
This project was focused on rebranding Tupperware (Jan-Apr, 2007). ‘Flavor’ is a dining table center piece that mimics shapes from buds and blossoming flowers. It provides an elegant appearance that one may mistake for a sculpture. The tall shakers bring the elements of a blossoming flower to your tabletop while providing taste and flavor to your meal.
final design
My design class started working on this project
as a group. Research was the first part of group activities and was divided into three sub-groups that separately focused on individual categories. Then we got together again and explored ideas and possibilities. From ideation we decided to divide into two main design directions: “home” and “away”. Each person choose one direction and individually finished their own final design. I chose “home” as my design direction.

taste sensation
Flavor is a dinning table center piece that mimics a garden scene that uses shapes from buds and blossoming flowers. The buds are the little vessels that hold condiments such as mustard and ketchup. The tall shakers bring the elements of a blossoming flower to your tabletop while providing taste and flavor to your meal. Each vessel in this garden sits on a lily pad-like coaster to maintain stability and enhance their beauty.
Garden Theme
Inspired by the elements of a growing flower, Flavor is designed to provide an elegant appearance on your table top. The combination of materials and form drive it to become an exclusive piece.
Three shakers each with their own color. Each contains either pepper, salt or your own choice.
The elegant vessels hold ketchup, mustard and a sauce of your choice. A spoon is used to serve and wood is used to seal.

Sustainable Design Baobei babystroller
This project is focused on exploring sustainable design issues, principles, and processes (Jan-Apr, 2007). BaoBei is a baby stroller with simplified parts and functions that benefit both the baby and the mother. The consideration for a growing baby is seen through the folding structure to adapt from a laying to a sitting position. Instead of the stroller finding its way into the garbage, removal of the fabric parts transforms the frame into a shopping cart for use at the grocery store.

baby sleeping research Sleep on their backs
On April 14, 1992 the American Academy of Pediatrics announced it’s recommendation that healthy infants should sleep on their backs rather than prone. It’s safer for babies to sleep on their back, rather than the stomach.
Sleeping in a safe environment
Cot, mattresses, and baby hammocks are probably safe for babies, but: ---always make sure the hammock is set up according to the instructions and fittings are secure ---always settle your baby on his back
Sleeping in an unsafe environment
Infant should not sleep in the adult bed. • Water beds, sofas, soft mattress or other soft surfaces are not safe • No loose bedding in an infant sleep environment
Sitting less than 6 months
Newborns younger than 6 months can’t sit up without support, they can’t ride in a standard stroller, that is, one that doesn’t fully recline.
Sleep more at day time than night time
Normal babies sleep during the day and are up at night, at least for the first (6-8) weeks. Older infants get up at night, but less often, and it is normal for a one year old to not be sleeping through the night. Interesting tidbit: about 80% of parents of one year old identify their children as having “sleep problems.”

When the baby is a young infant, this stroller gives the 180 degree, fully reclined sleeping space. The upper tent could be adjustable in two directions.
As the baby grows, this stroller provides an adjustable space for sitting and sleeping.
When the baby becomes a toddler, this stroller can still provide enough space and support for them to sit and sleep comfortably.

furniture design
This project was focused on designing and making a functional piece of furniture with an understanding of the user, its purpose, ergonomics, materials, aesthetics, and fabrication. The key for success is creating a design that can be made within the defined project schedule.
problem and needs problem
Most residents in New York City live in high-rise apartments or condos where every square foot is valuable. Nothing makes a small apartment feel smaller than disorganization. Limited space is a big concern when someone purchases any furniture for an apartment. ---Do I really need it? ---Do I have enough space for it? ---How easy I can carry it when I move or travel? ---How often am I going to use it? ---Can I use it for something else? such as: table, computer, writing, eating sitting, sleeping, closet, display, storage or laundry basket, etc.
needs
Because she lives in New York, the furniture should: ---be able to help her organize all her belongings. ---easy to carry and save space ---have more than one function ---eco-friendly materials, recycled fabric, minimal plastics ---social feature ---simplicity

issue paper furniture
My inspiration comes from sitting on the toilet. I took a break and sat on the toilet in the bathroom when I worked at a restaurant as a waitress. It was quite comfortable. From that inspiration I used the tissue paper roll form as a concept for a sitting device. This furniture allows people to sit on a hollow space which can also be used as storage. A fabric blanket attaches to the cylinder form that can be wrapped around your body to keep warm. Also it can used as a blanket on the floor. The cylinder form gives back support while laying down.

People always throw clothes on the chair and lose space to sit. This helps people to divide the space and keep organized.

gesture When students go to school, it is
not stable to put their bag on the back of the chair. This chair locks the straps of the bag on itself.
saychairhi to you This inspiration comes from a conference meeting. People always have trouble to find a place to put their purse or bag. They don’t want to put it on the floor and get it dirty; but also want put in a safe place near by. This chair gives two accesses for hanging purse on the chair. One is on the back, one is near your leg. This way people can keep their eye on their belongings. The form of chair looks like waving hand, so I named it “SAY HI TO YOU.
vase glove It is inspired by a vase form. It
is made of a hard base and a fabric glove. Besides sitting, it can be used as a laundry bag after taking it off from the hard base.
she & he When friends come over the house, they can pick the spot by their own gender. It gives a playful feature to this furniture.
hide it A public sitting device for
people to rest. The form gives the ability to let people put their belongings or books into the gap.
shadow The shadow structure
underneath the chair attaches with fabric. It adds the storage space beside the sitting.
paper folding experiment
I had paper folding class when I was little in China. I started with my memory and had experiment with various forms.
hands on
I choose to use different type of pater from soft to rigid, even collaborated with thread. It was very interesting to figure out each pattern and all the joints.
FROG
This is inspired by the paper folding mock-up experiments. There is no glue used to hold this stool together. The wood pieces create four joints which become the main strength to support a persons weight. It can be used as a sitting device in a small apartment in order to save space.

Nike Growth
Concept Running Footwear This concept project was created during my Nike internship in 2007. I had no shoe design experience before I started this internship and this project truly helped me to understand the entire shoe design process, from a little idea in my head to real three dimensional sample shoes.

support waste of outsole shoe lace
To encourage running, let teenagers track and show off how much they’ve run.
It is not affordable to own three types of running shoes based on varied running styles. You never know when a shoes will start to wear out, and outsole is always the first to do so.
A loose lace can cause a runner to trip and injure themselves. A traditional lace may take some time to secure.
technology inspiration Space bag---shrink the size of the puffy winter clothes. The cloth and the bag are secured together after the air gets sucked out by the vacuum cleaner hose. The clothing is very secure in the space bag after the air is sucked out. This technology reminds me of the relationship between outsole and rest of the running shoes. “ Zip-lock” seam is another way to enclose opening. It helps the air keep away from the bag and is very quick to open and close.
Ideation
Upper exploration In order to bring flexibility, light weight, and encouragement to the new running shoes, many concepts reflects them in different forms.
outsole exploration Each sketch has its own story behind it and the final one I chose is inspired by the finger print pattern and represent the movement of blood through running.
modeling tec-pack drawing+ maya 3d modeling It is very challenging as first time to create a tec-pack drawing for me, and building a model in Maya. This stage pushed me to refine all the details to communicate with engineers and modelers.

I started with a tape drawing to refine the front toe that can blend with the rest of the design on the prototype. I learned a new approach to refine the design through a three dimensional form. It helped me to understand the deeper relationship between form, color, material and function. Even a single stitching line is important.

Then by sucking the air out, press the upper and lower seam together, the new outsole is securely attached with the rest of the shoe. Instead of purchasing many types of running shoes or new shoes, people can customize or replace the outsole without wasting material and glue.

growing movement The sensor ball on the heel of the shoe changes the color on the fabric as the runners distance progresses. This feature informs them of their running progress and in turn encourages them to express their athletic achievement. The athlete is informed to replace a new outsole when the pattern is completely filled with color.
School reward program The growing feature can be associated with school to reward the students for their athletic achievement.
sensor ball
This sensor ball reads the miles and controls the color changing on the running shoes.
GROWTH Those are two types of modles for the conceptial running shoe. The hard model is made from 3D CNC printing machine and soft upper model is made in sample room at Nike campus.
Chrysler Concept minivan in multimedia
A sponsored project by Chrysler. The assignment was to design a concept vehicle for the year 2015. The assigned vehicle was required to be represented with tape drawing and a finished 1/5 scale multimedia model within a certain period of time.
creative media Walking through home depot, I was able to find many of the materials needed for the construction of my 1/5 scale model. It was mainly made of acrylic sheet, wire, rod; nuts, caps, and plumbing. It was a really fun to explore new materials and reuse found objects for this multi-media model.
Ceramic design projects
I enrolled in ceramics as an elective class. The assignment was to relate to a book, then create a piece that is a literal reiteration or an abstract recreation. This series is the result of vast time and exploration in the form and function that can be found with clay.
beauty of book page As people read through books their interactions result in unique patterns from the pages layering up on another. These patterns change from the amount of pages, weight of the paper and content of the book.

warm up A cup for holding hot beverages year round. In the summer the fabric protects your hands from the hot cup with your hands outside the dual layers of insulation. In colder weather your hands are inserted in the fabric where the beverage warms your hands and the outer cloth protects your hands from the wind. The form of the cups mimic the aesthetic and form of the human hand.
vase This ceramic vase is made by coil technique and it looks like an extruded form.
Fashion Design projects
In my jewelry elective I wanted to blend my passion for metal and fabric to create a hybrid garment. All of the garments shown are prototypes. Final versions are still in progress to address form and materials choices.
GEO The use of geometric shapes in the coat makes it feel more like a product than a regular garment. The pattern applied to the fabric leads to a rigid shell with an organic contour. The whole sleeve on the right arm is made from one piece. It involved cutting, folding, and lots of mathematical calculation. The form of the sleeve enlarges the strength of the arm and has nice contrast with the body of the coat.
ARMOR The jacket is inspired by a book I read called ‘The History of Armor’. This blazer expresses the opposite of how soft a female is. By adding metal the blazer becomes a weapon if necessary while maintaining a fashionable accord. Triangular shapes consistently repeat in the pattern of the blazer, and has been translated to a protruding 3D format on the sleeves. The metal piece is designed to mimic a regular cuff but could be separated and worn as a bracelet. Divots are used to mimic buttons used on a traditional blazer.
DRIP Those two arm pieces are inspired by the dripping patterns from oil painting. It captures the beauty of the natural drips on the human body.
muscle The form of this dress is intended to enhance females strength by exaggerating the hips and gesture of the body. The dress becomes a shell forming the body and being a protective garment.
MUSCLE prototype
The form of this dress is intended to enhance females strength by exaggerating the hips and gesture of the body. The dress becomes a shell forming the body and being a protective garment. The pattern of this dress is inspired by insects in nature. I created this abstract image and combined the technique of puffing to mimic the muscle of the human body in a interesting manner.
BRAID prototype
Hand-sewn prototypes made of basic muslin. Developed without sketching, just pure material experimentation. As the wearers body moves the dress reacts and changes form to adapt. Braids are made of multiple strips of fabric. The end of the braids wrap around the neck and accentuate the form of the female body. For the final piece I will add metal elements at the end of the braids to mimic a necklace.

Adidas TMAC
ADIDAS Performance Culture testing project
This is a 7 day testing project for footwear design in Performance Culture category. Using the Adidas TMAC 1 as inspiration, I was assigned to create two separate designs: one lifestyle version and one performance version.
ADIDAS
lifestyle version of TMAC Lifestyle version: “This means you would play with construction, materials, top line, shape, simplifying the pattern, etc... but the final product will still look somewhat similar to the original on court shoe. Show inspiration images that led you to your design. My design is inspired by the purity, simplicity and masculine character of the TMAC shoes. I took the three strips of Adidas as a main brand identity and applied the function of straps to them. By maintaining a similar industrial like cut line, I was able to blend the perforations for breathability. On the back of the shoes, the opening cut allows more comfort and ventilation.

lifestyle running inspired version of TMAC
“This means you would play with construction, materials, top line, shape, simplifying the pattern, etc...but the final product will have a running shoe silhouette. You could choose a running shoe from Adidas past to use as the inspiration for your running influence. My design for this running shoe focused on brand identity. The multiple stripes around the tongue area are made of mesh with 3D perforation technology allowing a lightweight, breathable, and protective layer. I remixed the TMAC logo and wrapped it around the heel from medial to lateral side of the shoe. The logo gives necessary protection for the heel and sides.

ULIKO Branding project
As the studio designer at Uliko, I was asked to re-brand the company to add a fresh and exciting feel. I created a style guide that was applied to company documents including business cards, signage, and letterheads. The design of the business card adds clarity to the employees position and contact information, while using a portrait to add personality and humor.
