AND JUST LIKE THAT, A NEW YEAR HAS BEGUN. AS WE COLLECTIVELY – AND SOMETIMES BEGRUDGINGLY – CAME OUT OF THE HOLIDAY TIMEWARP, STEVEN AND I WERE EXCITED TO PUT THIS LATEST EDITION OF OFFICE MAG TOGETHER.

WITHIN THESE PAGES, YOU WILL FIND A SNAPSHOT OF R HUGHES AS IT EXISTS BEFORE WE OPEN THE DOORS TO OUR NEW YORK DESIGN CENTER SHOWROOM. TO SAY WE ARE PROUD OF WHAT WE’VE ACCOMPLISHED AND YET HUMBLED BY THE OPPORTUNITY THAT LIES BEFORE US IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. Sirak is a los angeles-based design studio helmed by adam sirak, specializing in exterior and landscape projects. with a mission to cultivate gardens – inside and out – the designer began by creating original outdoors spaces for living and entertaining, but now extends his approach by unveiling a collection of sculptural vessels for plant specimens.

“adding sirak to the list of represented designers at r hughes signals an expansion for the showroom as we begin to usher the beauty of the outdoors into our homes. adam’s approach seems simple: nature provides serenity, so why not include it in our interior plans? and yet, more often than not, we have not seen it executed with this level of refinement within most sophisticated spaces... sirak provides that elevated solution.”

ryan hughes: your two collections are inspired by greco-roman shapes… when did you become enthralled with these cultures? how do they continue to inspire you?

adam sirak: where do i begin? i think it goes back to that old adage that if you want to know the way forward look to the past. the ideas those civilizations produced are still reverberating through almost all aspects of modern culture. when i look at the level of beauty and sophistication in their architecture, art and philosophy it gives me a sense of wonder that could almost be described as divine.

rh: you’ve claimed “gardens are maps that guide us to connect with ourselves.” tell us more about that.

as: i think a garden is really about an invitation to remember our eternal bond with nature and to contemplate our place in the universe and, in that way, it’s a map to connect with our deeper selves. the world is a busy and confusing place and a garden - or even a perfectly potted plant - invites us to pause and be present, which we could all do more of.

In essence, the collection reflects the deep reverence that ancient civilizations held for nature, acknowledging its profound influence on artistic creation, and the deities thought to preside over the drama of the natural world. beyond serving as mere vessels, they invite a continuation of our own dialogue with nature and a tangible link to the timeless inspiration it provides.

SET UP IN 2007 BY DRAGA OBRADOVIC AND AUREL K. BASEDOW, DRAGA & AUREL IS A MULTIDISCIPLINARY STUDIO AND WORKSHOP FOR ART, COLLECTIBLE DESIGN, AND FURNISHING ITEMS.

DRAGA OBRADOVIC BEGAN HER CAREER IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY, FIRST WORKING IN LONDON AND MILAN AS A TEXTILE DESIGNER BEFORE EVENTUALLY SETTLING IN COMO. AUREL K. BASEDOW GRADUATED FROM MILAN’S ACCADEMIA DI BELLE ARTI WITH A DEGREE IN FINE ARTS, HAVING PREVIOUSLY TRAINED AS A CARPENTER AND WOODWORKER. ARMED WITH A DIVERSIFIED BACKGROUND IN ART, FASHION, AND CRAFTSMANSHIP, DRAGA & AUREL ARE WIDELY KNOWN FOR COMBINING ORIGINAL METHODS WITH AN ARTISTIC APPROACH TO MATERIALS AND COMPOSITION. PIONEERS IN UPCYCLING IN THE DESIGN SECTOR, DRAGA & AUREL BEGAN THEIR JOURNEY BY REINVENTING VINTAGE FURNITURE AND OBJECTS IN THEIR OWN STYLE.

R HUGHES: YOU BOTH HAVE EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE IN THE DESIGN INDUSTRY. IT BEGS THE QUESTION; HOW DID YOU GET YOUR START? WHAT DREW YOU TO THIS LIFE?

DRAGA & AUREL: WE BOTH HAVE AN ARTISTIC BACKGROUND, GRADUATING FROM ARTS ACADEMIES IN MILAN AND FLORENCE. THEN LIFE BROUGHT US TO FOLLOW DIFFERENT PATHS, DRAGA IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY AS A TEXTILE DESIGNER AND AUREL IN MUSIC AND CRAFTS. THERE WAS A MOMENT, ABOUT 15 YEARS AGO, WHEN WE FELT THE NEED TO CHANGE COURSE AND STARTED AGAIN FROM A COMMON PASSION, VINTAGE, COMBINED WITH OUR ARTISTIC ORIGINS AND OUR PASSION FOR TRAVEL. THIS IS HOW, WHAT TODAY IS “DRAGA & AUREL” STARTED: BUYING ARMCHAIRS AND FURNITURE IN SECOND-HAND MARKETS ALL OVER THE WORLD, BRINGING THEM TO OUR “HOME ATELIER” (WHICH WAS MORE LIKE A GARAGE AT THAT TIME...), AND GIVING THEM A NEW LIFE USING FABRICS AND RESIN. WE HAD A LOT OF FUN AND A LOT OF PASSION FOR WHAT WE WERE DOING. NOW THAT THE SMALL GARAGE IS A COMPANY WITH A STUDIO, AN ATELIER, AND A FULL TEAM OF PROFESSIONALS, WE STILL HAVE THE SAME FUN AND PASSION: I GUESS THAT’S THE SECRET!

RH: HOW DID YOU TWO MEET AND BEGIN THIS JOURNEY IN CREATING TOGETHER?

...WITHOUT EVER MEETING. WE BOTH ARRIVED IN ITALY (FROM SERBIA AND GERMANY) TO STUDY PAINTING IN FLORENCE AT THE ACADEMY OF FINE ARTS. THEN, DRAGA MOVED TO COMO TO BE A TEXTILE DESIGNER AND AT THE SAME TIME AUREL CAME TO COMO TO FINISH HIS STUDIES AT THE ACADEMY OF BRERA IN MILAN. WE MET ONLY SOME YEARS LATER THANKS TO A MUTUAL FRIEND, BUT ALMOST BY CHANCE, AND WE OFTEN SMILE THINKING HOW MANY TIMES WE WERE SO CLOSE AND NEVER MET... JUST LIKE SLIDING DOORS.

RH: WHAT INSPIRED THE DEBUT COLLECTION?

DA: TRANSPARENCY MATTERS IS A SYNTHESIS OF OUR CREATIVE PROCESS: IT IS THE PERFECT MIX OF ART AND DESIGN, RESEARCH IN MATERIALS, INSPIRATION FROM THE PAST, AND OUR EYE TO THE FUTURE. WE ARE FASCINATED BY THE CREATIVE IMPETUS OF THE SEVENTIES, A PERIOD OF GREAT VITALITY, FERMENT, EXPERIMENTATION, AND CONTAMINATION, BUT ALSO THE PLAYFUL AND UNCONVENTIONAL APPROACH.

RH: HOW DOES HAVING A STUDIO IN LAKE COMO BENEFITED YOU ALL? DO YOU STILL FEEL INSPIRED BY THE LANDSCAPE?

DA: LAKE COMO HAS ALWAYS BEEN AN INCREDIBLE SOURCE OF INSPIRATION AND KNOWLEDGE. WE ARE LUCKY TO LIVE, DESIGN, AND CREATE IN SUCH A RICH LAND, HOME OF THE GREATEST ITALIAN MANUFACTURERS OF WOOD AND METALS. WE ARE CLOSE TO THE MOST IMPORTANT FURNITURE AND DESIGN COMPANIES BUT ALSO TO THE MOST INCREDIBLE ARTISANS. WE OWE A LOT TO THIS PLACE, AND WE ARE TRYING WITH OUR WORK TO GIVE BACK. WE LOVE TO EXPERIMENT WITH TECHNIQUE, FOR EXAMPLE, WE REINTRODUCED SOME TRADITIONAL PROCESSING METHODS THAT WE DISCOVERED HERE IN COMO AND THAT ARE NOT USED ANYMORE, SLOWER, SOMETIMES HARDER BUT PROVIDING BETTER AND MORE EMOTIONAL RESULTS.

RH: WHAT PIECE IN YOUR COLLECTION MAKES YOU MOST PROUD?

DA: IT IS SOOO DIFFICULT TO CHOOSE. MAYBE IF WE HAVE TO PICK JUST ONE, I WOULD SAY OUR JOY LAMPS, WHICH WE BELIEVE PERFECTLY EMBODY THE BLEND OF OUR TWO SOULS, ART AND DESIGN. THESE LAMPS WERE FIRST LAUNCHED IN 2019 WHEN WE PRESENTED THE FIRST PIECES OF TRANSPARENCY MATTERS, IN THE “PILL” VERSION AND THEY WERE IMMEDIATELY RECEIVED WITH ENTHUSIASM, BECOMING OUR MOST DISTINCTIVE PIECE. LAST YEAR, WE WORKED AGAIN ON THIS RESIN LAMP, PROPOSING A CIRCULAR VERSION THAT IS PERHAPS EVEN MORE ARTISTIC AND SPECTACULAR, VERY SEVENTY BUT AT THE SAME TIME EXTREMELY CONTEMPORARY.

RH: WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST TECHNICALLY CHALLENGING PIECE YOU’VE WORKED ON?

DA: ALL OUR TRANSPARENCY MATTERS PIECES REQUIRE A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TESTING AND

EXPERIMENTATION. BUT WE LOVE A LITTLE CHALLENGE AND THIS AS WELL, COULD BE OUR FAVORITE PART OF THE PROCESS. FOR EXAMPLE, WE HAD A CLEAR VISION OF HOW OUR JOY LAMPS SHOULD TURN OUT, THOUGH IT TOOK US A MOMENT TO FIGURE ALL A SPECIAL RESINCASTING TECHNIQUE BEFORE COMPLETING IT.

RH: WHY DID YOU START WORKING WITH NEON? HOW DO YOU TAKE A MATERIAL THAT HAS SUCH A VAST COMMERCIAL USAGE & BRING IT INTO THE HOME?

DA: WE HAVE BEEN PLAYING WITH NEON A LOT AT THE BEGINNING, WE WERE FASCINATED BY ITS INDUSTRIAL YET CHARMING GLOW. IT WAS ALSO INTERESTING FOR US TO TRY AND BRING IT “INSIDE”, BACK IN THE 60’S IT WAS MAINLY USED OUTDOORS IN BUSY CITIES. DAN FLAVIN WAS A MAJOR INFLUENCE ON US, THUS, WE FELT LIKE REVIVING NEON AND RESTORING ITS ARTISTIC QUALITY.

RH: HOW DO YOU FEEL LIKE THE AMERICAN INTERIOR DESIGN MARKETS DIFFER FROM THE EUROPEAN MARKETS?

DA: WE ADORE OUR AMERICAN PARTNERS AND FRIENDS. THEY ARE THE MOST ENTHUSIASTIC PEOPLE EVER AND LOVE EVERYTHING WE DO! (LAUGHING). THIS ENTHUSIASM IS INFECTIOUS AND IT’S WONDERFUL TO KNOW THAT OUR WORK RESONATES SO POSITIVELY. WE ARE INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL CONNECTION AND LOOK FORWARD TO NURTURING IT.

RH: IS THERE A PARTICULAR MATERIAL THAT YOU FAVOR AND THAT REPRESENTS YOU MOST?

DA: WE CERTAINLY FIND MAXIMUM EXPRESSION THROUGH THE USE OF RESIN, AN INDOMITABLE AND UNPREDICTABLE MATERIAL THAT OFFERS US INCREDIBLE CREATIVE OPPORTUNITIES THROUGH PLAYS OF TRANSPARENCY AND COLOR NUANCES. IN ADDITION TO ITS ‘AESTHETIC’ IMPORTANCE, THE RESIN ALSO HAS A SYMBOLIC VALUE FOR US. WE LIKE TO COMBINE IT WITH OTHER CONTRASTING MATERIALS, SUCH AS CONCRETE, BOTH IN DESIGN OBJECTS AND IN WORKS OF ART.

RH: WHAT EMOTION DO YOU WANT PEOPLE TO EXPERIENCE WHEN THEY SEE THESE PIECES?

DA: WE HOPE TO EXPRESS AND COMMUNICATE POSITIVE EMOTIONS: FUN, CAREFREENESS, AND LIGHTNESS. WE ALL NEED A LOT OF IT.

HOUSE

SHOPPING WASN’T WHAT I WANTED TO DO THAT DAY, BUT I RELENTED. OUR REALTOR DROVE US AROUND THE 100-YEAROLD NEIGHBORHOOD OF MORNINGSIDE “JUST TO SEE,” AND AS FATE WOULD HAVE IT, THE VERY LAST HOUSE CAUGHT MY EYE. THE ORIGINAL FLOOR PLAN WAS SIMPLE: FOUR ROOMS DOWN, THREE ROOMS UP, A SUN PORCH ON THE SIDE, AND A SAD CINDER BLOCK ADDITION OFF THE BACK. THE SIMPLICITY MADE SENSE TO ME. WAS THIS THE ONE? WALKING THE PERIMETER OF THE HOUSE, I STUDIED THE FOUNDATION LOOKING FOR ANY DISRUPTIONS IN THE BRICK. I WALKED IT TWICE DESPERATE FOR ANY EXCUSE TO ABORT. NO DROPS IN THE LINE. NO CRACKS IN THE MORTAR. THE FOUNDATION WAS STRONG AND SO, WITH TREPIDATION AND A VISION FOR WHAT COULD BE, WE MADE AN OFFER.

IT TURNED OUT THE HOUSE RESTED ON A BETTER FOUNDATION THAN MY RELATIONSHIP. IN JANUARY OF 2020, A MONTH BEFORE CLOSING, WE DECIDED IT WOULD BE BEST FOR ME TO PURCHASE THE HOUSE THAN BE UPSIDE DOWN ON THE “DESIGNER” UPGRADES I INSISTED ON. THE FIRST FEW NIGHTS OF MARCH WERE RESTLESS. RESENTFUL OF A MORTGAGE I ANTICIPATED TO SPLIT WITH A PARTNER AND ROOM AFTER ROOM OF EMPTY HOUSE WEIGHED HEAVY ON ME. HOWEVER, NONE OF IT COMPARED TO WHAT WAS COMING AS A MYSTERY VIRUS GRIPPED US ALL. SCHOOL CLOSURES FOLLOWED. THEN WORK CLOSURES. AND FINALLY, MANDATORY LOCKDOWNS.

RESTLESS NIGHTS QUICKLY TURNED TO SLEEPLESS NIGHTS...

THE FIRST FEW MONTHS OF THE PANDEMIC WERE SCARY, BUT I WAS LUCKY. THE INTERIORS WERE FAR FROM COMFORTABLE, BUT THOSE YELLOW BRICK WALLS NOW PAINTED WHITE PROTECTED ME DURING THOSE MONTHS. THIS NEWLY RENOVATED 1920’S HOUSE QUICKLY BECAME MY OFFICE, MY GYM, MY BAR, MY THEATER, AND MOST FORTUNATELY OF ALL, AN INCUBATOR FOR A NEW AND GREAT LOVE.

MY LUCK CONTINUED AS OUR INDUSTRY THRIVED DURING THE PANDEMIC. OVER THE NEXT TWO YEARS AND WITH THE SUPPORT OF SO MANY VENDORS, I PIECED TOGETHER A SLICE OF HEAVEN FOR MYSELF. ROOMS STITCHED TOGETHER IN DEEP AUTUMNAL HUES OF BURNT CINNAMON AND RUST. WALLS COVERED IN CHERISHED PIECES OF ART EACH ONE WORTHY YET MOST WORTHLESS. AND WINDOWS DRAPED IN YARDS AND YARDS OF FABRIC. SLOWLY WE WENT BACK TO WORK, BACK TO THE GYM, BACK TO THE BARS. BIT BY BIT, MY TINY LITTLE HOUSE IN MORNINGSIDE BECAME WHAT IT WAS ALWAYS MEANT TO BE – A HOME.

IT’S BEEN FIVE YEARS SINCE I FIRST LAID EYES ON THIS HOUSE. PERSONALLY, THESE PICTURES HAVE CAPTURED THE SADDEST, STRANGEST, SCARIEST, YET MOST FULFILLING PARTS OF MY LIFE UNTIL NOW. PROFESSIONALLY, THEY WILL FOREVER MEMORIALIZE THE SUCCESSES OF OUR SMALL BUSINESS. I WILL FOREVER BE GRATEFUL TO OUR WONDERFUL CLIENTS WHO HAVE SUPPORTED US AND TO EVERY ONE OF OUR VENDORS WHO CONTINUE TO BELIEVE IN OUR VISION OF WHAT A MULTILINE SHOWROOM COULD AND SHOULD BE. AND ABOVE ALL, I AM GRATEFUL TO MY BUSINESS PARTNER AND BEST FRIEND, RYAN HUGHES.
