unBOUNDARY In contemporary political discourse, boundary conditions have become charged as mechanisms of spatial and cultural isolation. Indeed, architecture has historically set the stage for such narratives of exclusion. The history of exclusion in the Bay Area runs deep. Angel Island is isolating by the nature of its geography. The island’s historic Immigration Station has direct ties to anti-Chinese and anti-immigrant legislation enacted in the early 1900s. More recently, the tech boom of Silicon Valley has had wide-reaching implications for the bay area, displacing longtime residents and natives due to rampant property costs. Perhaps rapid-fire displacement has been the only constant since the arrival of the Spanish imperialists.

BART STATION (BELOW)
A parallel chronology can be traced in the development of the BART train in the early 60s. Though a second transbay tube was planned to traverse the west side of the bay and connect Marin to the city, the legislation to support this line was never passed.
This project proposes that access is the most important factor in creating a space to simultaneously celebrate and reflect upon the past, present, and future of the American naturalization process. Sanctuary and accessibility are not mutually exclusive. existing bart line proposed bart line (‘61)
In proposing that this Marin line be reconsidered, an intermediate
proposed marin line
Angel Island stop would provide much greater access to the new

Sanctuary and to the larger natural resource of the State Park.
