AS THE MASTER PLAN FOR DISCOVERY GREEN AND THE GEORGE R. BROWN CONVENTION CENTER MOVES FORWARD, MUCH OF THE AREA IS BEING DEFINED BY AN INCREASE IN RESIDENTIAL AND HOSPITALITY FABRIC, WHICH IN TURN IS ERODING THE SURFACE PARKING THAT BLOTTED THE DOWNTOWN LANDSCAPE IN RECENT MEMORY.
THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS PROJECT IS THE RESPONSIVENESS TO THE SHIFTING URBAN NARRATIVE OF DOWNTOWN, BUT FURTHERMORE THE ABILITY TO MAINTAIN THE INTIMACY OF INCARNATE WORD AND ANNUNCIATION CATHOLIC CHURCH. THE GARAGE IS A SHELTERING DEVICE CARVING OUT AN IMPORTANT SPACE FOR THE PRESERVATION AND LIVELIHOOD OF THE CHURCH AND SCHOOL.

ORGANIZING TRANSIT DEVICE There is a plethora of mass transit systems that frequent the village and people are constantly loading/unloading along the University boundary of the Village. Carving into the parking system along University, and clarifying where transit occurs will help to alleviate congestion and confusion
PORCH AND LAWN. The Village Arcade acts as the front door to the village, yet urban actuality does not measure up to such standards. In reorganizing the parking in thinner pockets and in boundary conditions, the Arcade is allowed to breath, and the space can expand and contract based on need, use or whim.
PRIMARY COLORS HOUSTON. TEXAS
TACTILE URBAN SLIPS The nature and character of the neighborhood overall is showcased most clearly in the Live Oak canopy that surrounds the residential fabric. As the village matures, playing off of the material pallette of West U and Rice Village will endear new development within the fabric of the place
PEDESTRIAN/TRANSIT SPINE Kelvin’s proximity at the center of the site allows for it to act as an organizing device as the Village grows. Circulating a steet car/trolley through the corridor adds a level of clarity and visual identity for visitors
KIRBY RESIDENTIAL CURTAIN Adding density and an influx of residents to the site in a way that compliments the texture of the neighborhood.
MAJOR SITE PARKING Elevated above existing fabric. Garage acts as wayfinding element, instantly allowing visitors clarity in moving through the site

Along my right, a stately church stares down the Avenue, its brazen pair of steeples lighting a path toward the water, stretched out into the open, peering down, relating through it’s steadfast buttresses, “Go on now, it’ll be fine.” From its bosom, I squint into the leering sun, its rays stern enough to sheild the way down the street, yet directly across the way, a red faced building turns toward me its side, revealing a patched wall of grey mortar hiding a very hideous set of scars. It takes a bit of manuevering to get up closer, dodging three or four more lanes of traffic across some widened and drab corridor. The building’s edge hides in the shadow of the northern light, unwilling to reveal the cleaved nature of its wall, but it appears looking East to West, as though some grand axe has dropped from Heaven to evict its neighbor and expose its sad wall, only sheltered by an array of plastered ads which have been nailed and pinned in the greiving brick. The poster’s shout as guilty foster parents: “Checks Cashed; Gambiling is all fun and games; BeaScout.org, Attorney-At-Law.” Moving south, away, it’s street front face sits bravely with its remaining neighbors, siblings. Each appear sadder and sqautier than this thin long building, its proportions able enough to be brave for the lot of them; salvaging, sheltering them from the derelict fate which befell their northern brace. There are similar stories down the street, odd hacked away faces, and similarly missing buildings, and loose ends, but if I turn back North, I can still see the steeples, piercing the brow of the hill as the landscape climbs amongst the horizon. “Go on, now.” I feel just as compelled to walk amongst this seam, with hope, with knowledge the water will be there soon. Across a small alley two oppositions stare awkwardly at each other. The first, the northern statue, riddled with strange iron contraptions dancing and darting along its face, wires and signs piercing through rotting holes, patched with some silocone glob that has quickly taken on the complexion of dust. The second, the southern neighbor, is pierced as well, yet it seems considered, direct. A series of tiered railings house a few residents willing to dot their heads over the balconies to smirk at me as I maneuver my way past. It’s brick are rectillinear and smooth. It’s windows are filled with glass, not smattered by molded plywood and mangled iron gates. Among those windows, little sold signs are visible amongst the glare, as though they were picked puppies yelping at the pet store. The newcomer seems to have instigated a kind of game. Across the street, a wide broad building is hushed behind a series of scaffolds, muzzled and drowned for a moment as it’s skin is pulled away. Like some kind of burn victim, Tyveck plasters itself up the exposed muscle, and slowly a new yellowed brick quiets the disheartened structure.

The remaining buildings seem to have themselves done up just as well, perhaps already enraptured by the demonizing replacements, or simply pampered a bit so as not to appear too sad and out of place. They dot themselves down the line, denser and denser, happier and happier, and I begin to sense the rhythm. That’s all fine, but well, wait, there’s another one of these wide avenues, this one cloaked in more garb and finery, but underneath, another cleaved wall. Out in front of me, uncaring Buicks blow smog up my nostrils, and I turn back North, searching for my steeples between coughs. The blank wall blocks my view. Along it’s balding edge in distorted perspective, a tall well dressed man leans over and tips his hat to me, offering a wink. I thought I was supposed to find water. Squinting, I find only another snide wink.

This Thesis is specifically interested in the de-urbanization of innner city neighborhoods, ones whose past and building stock hold a vast series of industrial narratives, demarcated through cultural and historical threads which have continued to persist through time. Utilizing those characteristics as an initial framework, the project looks to deepen it’s knowledge of the placeless moments in the city, actively catalouging the abandoned remnants within these zones, and questioning what role those zones continue to play within the makeup of the city. After establishing that as a discourse, the resulting attitudes will begin to make projections as to how architectural insertions can restitch the latent readings of place, and develop strategies which are capable of traversing and crossing these physical and psychological bounderies, which exist to continually deteriorate and separate portions of the urban core. The architectural insertions will look to introduce a sympathetic tectonic language able to reestablish the role of the historical fabric, and furthermore, able to occupy the residual spaces in a manner capable of repositioning and repairing the demoralized streetscape.
