Bombero Station

In This Issue:

Caldera

BOQUETE C. CALENDAR –

by Phyllis McNaughton The Bomberos of Boquete have a new reason to celebrate. In a presentation given by the architect Rodrigo De Las Casas on August 7th at the Bombero station, they saw the plans for a new sub-station that will be constructed in the town of Caldera. Among other dignitaries at the meeting were: Sr. Manolo Ruiz (Alcalde), Capitán Jorge E. Gonzalez (Jefe de Bomberos de Boquete), Mayor Dr. Manuel de la Cruz (Tercer Jefe), H.R. Elis Ríos (Representante de Caldera), and H.R. Guadalupe Mock (representante Alto Boquete) The district of Boquete has been steadily growing. Currently, it takes 35 to 40 minutes for the Bomberos to respond to emergencies in Caldera, during which time the fire damage will have already been done. Bombero and city officials decided that fire substations were needed in Alto Boquete and Caldera. The Municipio of Caldera and the city of Alto Boquete donated the necessary land for the sites. Rodrigo De Las Casas, a structural architect, donated the plans for the new fire station in Caldera through his non-profit organization, Academia Bioclimatica de Arquitectura y Tecnologia that was created to promote the study and development of sustained bioclimatic issues. “It seemed to be a good jumping off point to let people know about the new ideas used by Bio-climate Architecture,” says Rodrigo De Las Casas. He goes on to say that global warming is damaging the earth we live on, and that we need to think differently about how we design and construct buildings, whether they be personal homes or institutional facilities like the Bomberos station. The Caldera fire station will be the first institutional facility in Chiriqui using the principles of bioclimatic architecture. Bioclimatic design uses natural resources and passive energy such—sun, vegetation, wind, and rain—as tools to improve construction and to obtain the best thermal comfort in a building. With the climate of Caldera in mind, the new station will be illuminated and ventilated using alternate sources of passive energy. This means that the buildings will be located in such a way as to make the best use of cooling winds to ventilate the building. The North facade will have more windows, because there is less solar radiation, while the South and West facades will have fewer openings, and will be covered with vegetation, which acts as a natural cooling element. The roof is designed to provide good protection from the hot sun of Caldera, while providing good evacuation of rainwater. An underground storage unit will save the rain so that it can be recycled to wash the large fire trucks. Rodrigo De Las Casas has a master’s degree in bioclimatic architecture from the Isthmus University in Panama and the University of Mexico. His family company has more than 30 years of international expertise in residential and commercial architecture design and building.
