Welcome to the first issue of Reach. Reach is a magazine in which all art forms are explored and equally valued. You will find photographs, poetry, art, short stories, and essays throughout the pages of the magazine. Something that makes Reach unique is that it is a one-man (or rather a onewoman) production in which I, Rachel Krause, edit, design, write, and illustrate all works. I hope in the future other writers and artists will get involved and make Reach as great as it can possibly be. Now that we’ve got the basics covered I would like to go into this month’s issue. This month’s theme is surrounded by the idea of statues and their role in our society and world. After recently visiting Washington D.C. and seeing the national monuments first hand, I was blown away. I began to ask myself why they had such an impact because weren’t they just carved away pieces of stone? Somehow though, these statues manage to ignite strong feelings upon people at first sight. Statues seem to touch us in a way that other art forms do not. They become mirror images of who we are or who we would like to become. They inspire us and make us wonder if we are living our lives to full potential. Perhaps it is even simpler than that. Statues do not talk back or argue. Instead, they are supportive and kind. They are always there to provide a shoulder to lean on. Statues also live a zen-like life in which they stress the importance of silence. Take a note from the statues: forget about doing, just be.
