With each project and design, I’m always searching for new ways to bring happiness and well-being into an individual’s life and community. From the whimsy of color to the overall shape and form of a design, I want to bring freshness and inspiration to the inhabitants of the space. Through the constant exploration of green and sustainable practices, I hope to create designs that will enrich the lives of the occupants for generations to come.

KwaZulu Natal HIV/AIDS Clinic + Community Center KwaZulu Natal, South Africa Senior Thesis Project

South Africa has the highest number of citizens infected with HIV/AIDS in the world. With almost 14% of its population affected, South Africa is in critical need for help. Those living in rural areas are at the greatest need for care due to inadequate education, poor road conditions, insufficient transportation, and clinics few and far between. Together these issues contribute to a deficiency in testing and treatment throughout the country. KwaZulu Natal (KZN), a primarily rural province of South Africa, has the highest number of HIV+ citizens in the country. The KZN Clinic and Community Center serves as a model for the types of programs and care that are greatly needed in the rural areas across not only South Africa, but all of Sub-Saharan Africa. The KZN Center creates a more holistic approach to the treatment of HIV/AIDS. In addition to the medical care one can receive at the clinic, the KZN Center also provides a place to fight the various social issues of discrimination, and gender inequality, while also educating the community about the disease.

Elaborate textile designs are an integral part of Africa’s tribal tradition. These prints provide the inspiration for both the exterior paint design as well as the clinic’s interior color pallet. These colors and patterns energize the space, creating a sense of fun and joy in an otherwise serious and sterile atmosphere. Here they can feel at home and not anxious about the stress of their condition. The exterior space also includes iconic South African photographs as a part of a mural which emphasizes the community efforts of the clinic and counseling center.

Rural clinics can see anywhere from 20-200 patients a day. As such, it is critical for clinics to be efficient with their time. Yet they also need to be sure they are providing their patients with comprehensive care. The central cubicles are used to increase the amount of patients the clinic can see throughout the day by moving those patients that need additional consultation out of the treatment rooms. These cubicles can be used to disperse information on topics such as, pre-natal care or nutrition. Since these consultations are done in their own separate space, treatment rooms are open more frequently, allowing the clinic to treat and test more patients.

Shinjuku Grand Hotel

Shinjuku, Japan

The Shinjuku Grand Hotel tasked designers to create a five star hotel that would fit seamlessly into Japan’s largest business district. Designers were responsible for the creation of the first three floors, including the main lobby, several restaurants, space for retail and a conference center as well as the design of a spa, gym and five different room types. The designers’ inspiration came from the elegant forms of Japanese bento boxes, which have long been a staple for Japanese workers. As these boxes are often used to bring lunch to work, similar to the American lunch box, they served as the perfect inspiration for a hotel located in Japan’s business district. The asymmetrical components of these wooden boxes led to many of the forms found throughout the Grand Hotel. Many bento boxes are constructed using thin, delicate woods, like those seen throughout the main lobby and most prominently in the guest rooms. Succulents inspired the main color scheme. These plants not only provide a living element throughout the hotel, they also symbolize the longevity the Grand Hotel strives for in Shinjuku.

Optimum Spa

Optimum provides hotel guests with traditional Japanese spa treatments. From their famous shento baths, to the heated rock beds of the gangban yoku, guests are able to pick from a variety of spa packages that cater to all their needs. In keeping with the overall concept of the hotel, Optimum incorporates the pattern and designs found in bento boxes. Various angles guide guests through the space and create a sense of privacy as they walk to their treatments. These same angles also bring a contemporary look and feel that nicely juxtapose the ancient Japanese treatments of the spa.

The first level is made up of the hourly services provided by the spa. The amenities include the shento bath, indoor lap pool and spa, yoga gym, meditation room, and gangban yoku

The same delicate woods seen throughout the main lobby and reception are also seen in the various guest rooms. A woven wall is incorporated into the entrance of each of the guest rooms as a way to carry on the bento box concept. This element helps to unify each of the different grades of rooms so every guest can enjoy the same features and styles at any price range. The rooms are designed to be open and contemporary, so they can take advantage of the wonderful views provided from the floor to ceiling windows. The Executive Suite contains a separate living, dining, and sleeping space for guests to comfortably relax. While the Presidential Suite contains a full service kitchen and bar, a conference room, a large space for entertaining and two spacious bedrooms.

Origins Origin’s ever present gumball machines are an iconic trademark for the brand. For their newest store at The Pearl District Market, these gumballs provided the main inspiration for the store’s overall design. The shape of the storefront mimics the glass sphere of a gumball dispenser. The hanging light fixture, made of fiber optics cables, leads you through the store, like a gum ball spiraling down through the machine. It takes you by the main product displays, through the make-up station, and to the final point of sale. The circular cabinetry continues the main shapes established at the entrance. The POS station uses an astro turf covering to playfully evoke nature. The silk fabrics on the two main walls, bring in another level of texture and color to layer the environment by way of natural materials. The flooring is both barn plank bamboo flooring and a wood finished ceramic. By using one of Origin’s most playful trademarks, their boutique at The Pearl District Market is sure to provide a fun and refreshing shopping experience for customers, just like one of their mint gumballs.

Cedar Grille Fine Dining The Cedar Grille focuses on fresh, locally produced cuisine, artfully crafted, to provide guests with a unique fine dining experience. Wooden planks, like those used in grilling, provided the main inspiration for the overall design. Charred cedar planks are the primary material featured throughout the restaurant. The planks guide the guest through the space and connect all the separate dining rooms. The metallic appearance of the charred wood brings a unique color palette to the space. The shades of gray are paired with bright, fresh colors to not only accent the space, but also enhance the artful creations of the chef.

Dunning and Dunning Law Offices Athens, GA

Collaborative Law is a growing field within Divorce Law, in which the parties involved agree to end their marriage without engaging in court proceedings. During this time attorneys and counselors help mediate and negotiate the terms of the divorce, while also maintaining positive relations between the clients. The Dunning and Dunning Law Office required a space that would provide nurturing and productivity for their clients as well as their employees. Ample space was designated for counseling to help clients transition into this new phase of their life. The circular space, originally inspired by broken wedding bands, creates movement throughout the space that enhances the collaborative efforts of the lawyers. The circular forms were also used to make the space feel lofty and light in order to provide a stressfree environment for their clients.

Home With a Soul Jefferson, GA

John and Martha Henderson purchased an undeveloped piece of property in Jefferson County, Georgia. John, a pastor, wanted a space he could use for counseling and working. His wife, Martha, needed a kitchen for the cooking classes she teaches out of their home. Every year, they travel the world on mission trips and are constantly inspired by the places they go and the people they meet. They wanted a home to reflect their travels as well as act as a daily retreat. The overall shape and material choices of the structure were inspired by the prefabricated homes they built while abroad. The downstairs remains open for the various types of entertainment they host to flow throughout. However, since so much of their working day operates downstairs, their upstairs bedroom is secluded so they are able to rest and relax in their own private getaway.

Weekend Boathouse Wisconsin

A young couple recently inherited a home on a private lake in Wisconsin. The property also contained a boathouse that was in need of a renovation. The couple wanted to use the boathouse as a weekend retreat for themselves and their guests. They wanted a place for light meal preparations, space to sleep, and an area for the wife, an author, and the husband, a lawyer, to work. The movement of the winds coming off the lake inspired the sharp angles of windows. The wrap around deck, and angled windows coming off the house, allow the couple to enjoy the exceptional views offered all year round regardless of weather. The views provided by the angled windows also help bring in both natural light, and nature into the home for warmth and inspiration.

Furniture Beach Lounger for Two The beach lounger was a conceptual project using material from champagne bottles. The silhouette of the chair was inspired by the waves of the ocean and allows for two people to sit back to back. To highlight the colorful packaging of the champagne bottle, the labels were woven into a whimsical pattern. The seat of the chair sits directly on the ground for the occupant to enjoy both the sand and water.

55

Bow-case The bow-case takes the fluid form of a ribbon and transforms it into a structured element fit for a variety of uses. Two units together evokes the iconic form of a bow and can serve as a room divider, while a separate unit is able to sit flush against a wall. The bow-case comes in bright pops of color recalling its original inspiration

Frame Table Designed for the lounge of the UGA Interior Design Studio, the Frame Table and Woven Lounge Chair fit the multiple uses of the space. The table and chair provide students an opportunity to congregate and either discuss work or to take a break. The table is large enough to lay out a 36 x 24 print out either on the wooden pull out or on top. Both pieces highlight their materiality and structure as a metaphor for what the students are learning inside the studio.
