hile nothing’s more exciting than sifting through paint and fabric swatches and furniture catalogs, it can also feel overwhelming. You may not know what your style is or the furnishings you like until you see them. If you’re feeling challenged trying to pull your home
décor together, color is a great place to start. Identify your inspiration, decide on a color palette or direction for your room, and watch your space take shape. Here are three color stories paint color expert Sherwin-Williams says are on-trend now: Sincerity, Affinity, and Connectivity.

Songthrush
Inspired by a data-driven world where we’re each moving to the beat of our own algorithm, this high-tech palette is pixelated in orange, violets, digital greens and high-def yellow. From choosing a dry cleaner to choosing a college,
SINCERITY
data powers nearly every decision we make. In Silicon Valley, Austin, Berlin and Beijing, techies are the new hippies, full of breakthrough ideas and utopian ideals—and it’s a shift that’s inspired its own cultural color story.

Rojo Dust
Capturing the idea that less is more, this palette features hushed tones that play out in sand, complex grays and hazy botanicals. It’s a look inspired by the idea that silence is no longer empty, but instead rare and rich with
possibility. It supports the notion of celebrating the unfiltered, and allowing ourselves to be captivated by the artfully processed. With this color direction, blending in is the new standing out and flaws are treasured.
Oceanside
In a world where nationalism and globalism are in flux and we’re remapping our sense of community, we crave security and adventure in equal measure. The bright folklore of this color story is told in memorable pops of peacock
color. Inspired by the optimism that persists in the form of boundary-breaking skyscrapers and commercial space travel, it’s a rich, bold color direction that celebrates technology and progress.
All color swatches are from Sherwin-Williams.

Trending Now: Tables Create your ultimate living space with these on-trend tables and media consoles
T
oday’s attractive table choices make it easy to personalize your room and create a distinctive design aesthetic. The fashion, style and material options are nearly limitless. From wood, stone and metal to glass and acrylic, if you can dream it, there’s a table to fit your vision. Tables are both fashionable and functional. Gone are the days when occasional tables were designed and sold as sets. Now it’s more fun, and visually appealing, to curate a variety of tables in a room without matching them exactly. A shared shape, finish or design element is all it takes to connect them. As you shop for tables for your home, consider your space and lifestyle needs. Begin your search by asking yourself: What size table or console will work best? Take careful note of the room’s
dimensions, the future location of the table, and the size of any nearby furnishings. If you’re shopping for a media console, be sure to record the size of your television. What’s my style? Consider the design style you have established in the room as well as your vision for the overall space. What are my lifestyle needs? Consider the durability and clean-ability of your table choices, particularly if you have children or pets. If you have small children, avoid furnishings with sharp corners and install an anti-tip kit for taller pieces. What are my functionality requirements? Are you looking for storage or just a decorative piece? Will this table be used to support a lamp, books and decorative items, or a remote control and beverages?
TOP TABLE CHOICES Image: Hooker Furniture
When selecting tables for your room, don’t forget your television. Today’s modern media equipment deserves to be displayed stylishly. If you have an oversized flat screen TV, a stylish media console is essential. Look for a style that offers sufficient space for your TV without overpowering it. And don’t compromise on style— choose a media console that complements the look of your living space while keeping cords, cables and components out of sight.

a room. An effective lighting plan utilizes all three types of lighting for maximum impact. So how best to situate your lamps and lighting to give your room the illumination it needs and deserves? Consider these tips:
DEFINE THE ROOM’S PURPOSE Consider the activities that most often take place in the space. How much light do you need for each task or function? What types of lighting (table lamps, overhead fixtures, floor lamps, chandeliers, wall sconces) will best provide this type and amount of light?
CONSIDER THE MOOD FOR EACH SPACE

Designer tips for choosing lamps and lighting to complement your design aesthetic
G Images: Uttermost
ood lighting is essential to any well-designed space. Used properly, lighting will enhance not only the functionality of a room, but also its ambience. Well-chosen lamps and light fixtures can set the mood of a space, providing comfort and emphasizing style.
There are three basic types of lighting: Ambient (also known as general) lighting, which provides overall illumination for a room; task lighting, which directs needed light for specific functions, such as reading or preparing food; and accent lighting, which creates mood and drama around
Let your lighting selections shape the way you want the room to feel. If your vision is for a dramatic space, add a bold chandelier or eye-catching wall sconces. To create a warm, welcoming space, opt for beautiful table lamps with low-wattage bulbs. For a fun, fresh kitchen, consider adding colorful pedant lights above the bar or sink.
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO ILLUMINATE? Identify the focal point of your room and use it to direct your lighting choices. Do you have artwork you’d like to shine a light on, or other design elements you’re particularly proud of? Lighting is perfect for highlighting architectural elements and the special features of a room.

THE LOWDOWN ON LAMPS Lamps offer a quick and easy way to add style to a space. Here are some basic lamp types and how they’re best used:
TABLE LAMPS Perfect for a side table, table lamps can provide both task lighting and ambient lighting. While matching your table lamps is perfectly acceptable, a more creative design choice is to choose lamps that are unique yet relate to each other in shape, color, material or shade.
FLOOR LAMPS When there isn’t sufficient space for a table lamp, or you want to make a bolder statement, a floor lamp is a great solution. Floor lamps add style and work beautifully in a corner or next to a reading chair.
BUFFET LAMPS Ideal for creating warm illumination in dining spaces, buffet lamps are typically taller and narrower and designed to sit atop a buffet cabinet.
OVERHEAD LIGHTING/ CHANDELIERS Available in a variety of styles, overhead lighting provides ambient light for an entire room. Chandeliers are the most decorative option for overhead lighting and are commonly found in the dining room—although today’s modern chandelier styles also look great in living spaces and bedrooms.
WALL SCONCES These light fixtures are permanently attached to the wall and typically installed by an electrician. They provide a touch of lighting while adding character and interest.

Six expert strategies for designing your home office your way
W
hether your home office is the place where you spend most of your day, or just a corner where you pay bills and file household papers, it should be designed with purpose. One of the most important aspects of an effective office space is storage. Consider a hutch to help contain clutter, or a bookcase—with baskets or fabric bins—as solution for hiding files and supplies. Get creative when it comes to storage, and always select items that will complement your existing décor. While style is important, function comes first. Start with your desk—depending on your needs, it can be as simple as a table and chair, or a complete workstation with file drawers, a storage hutch, and cord management for electronics. Design your workspace for the type of work you do, and keep your most frequently used supplies nearby. And don’t forget a supportive chair. Another consideration when creating a home office is your work style. Do you need a peaceful, quiet area, or do you prefer to be where the action is? A spare bedroom or basement room might provide solitude, while a corner in the living room will make you more available to family members.
Space-saving Ideas No room for a dedicated home office? Try these multifunctional options.
1 2 3
In a bedroom, a desk with a mirror above it can double as a vanity. Place a writing desk behind a sofa in the family room for a convenient space to work.
A small hutch or desk in the kitchen is a great workspace, and provides storage for linens and cookbooks.

4
Display photos and have a handy workspace in your living area with a secretary-style desk.
5 6
Consider a coffee table with a lift-top desk for working on the sofa with your laptop.
A console table in a foyer or hallway makes a handy workspace. Keep a chair nearby for when you need a place to sit and work.
Home Office Matters Stay on track when working from home by following these tips: Start with a good desk and comfortable chair—they’re worth the investment and will help you be more productive.
Decide on your work hours and stick to them.
Start the day on time, as you would in a regular office. End the day on time, too.
Avoid distractions if possible, focusing on your goals and staying motivated.
Take breaks—short lunch breaks or quick errands will help keep you refreshed.

TABLE MANNERS
Modern, New Traditional, Cottage, Contemporary— Does your dining room reflect your unique style?
H
as your dining room become an all-but-forgotten space, used only a couple times a year for holidays or special occasions? Here are some ways to put the “divine” back into dining, and make your dining room a place to be savored.
HAVE A SEAT
REFRESH YOUR STYLE
GO WITH THE FLOW
What style influences are found in your home? Bring your favorite looks into the dining room to create a space where you’ll want to spend time. If you have a modern living space, update your dining room with some contemporary furniture and accessories. For a more casual home, look for relaxed styles that fit your lifestyle.
LET THERE BE LIGHT Making a small change in lighting can make a big impact. Adding a stylish chandelier over your table can change the entire look of a space. Enhance the mood of your dining room and highlight your china collection with a lighted china cabinet. 22
Your dining chairs need not be uniform— try complementing your current seating by adding upholstered armchairs at the heads of the table. You can also replace side chairs with a settee, bench, or banquette.
When you’ve used your dining room most recently, did you have enough space for all the food? Did you need extra chairs? Does your current dining set meet your needs, or should you add a few pieces, such as a serving cart, additional chairs, or a buffet?
ACCESSORIZE! Give your dining room a personal touch with accessories such as lamps, artwork, and floor and window coverings. Choose items or collections (such as vintage teacups) that you love to make it one of your favorite rooms in your home.

hat are your first thoughts when you enter someone’s home? Do you feel warm and welcomed? Or does the entryway seem cold and impersonal?
With only one chance to make a first impression, your foyer holds a great responsibility. It’s important to ensure your guests’ first steps through your door are met with comfort and beauty, and to lay the foundation for your home’s decor. Try these tips to turn your foyer or entryway into one of the most important “rooms” of your home. You might be surprised how much attention this often-overlooked space can garner. n Keep
it clutter-free. Make an effort to keep the foyer neat, with clear surfaces and no obstructions. Open, uncluttered spaces will allow your guests room to move and give your home a bigger feel.
n Make
it memorable. Bright, bold paint colors, large artwork, wallpaper in oversized patterns, and decorative mirrors will make your entryway unique and give it character.
n Be
space-smart. If you have a small foyer, keep an open feel with a simple pedestal table. Need to manage clutter with some extra storage? Try a bench or hall tree with storage underneath, or a chest or cabinet. Have a large entry? Go for the traditional round table in the center.

n A
welcome mat does just that— welcomes your guests, and keeps debris from the foyer. Choose one that’s nicely sized and lays securely in front of your door to avoid falls.

n Make
it personal. Your entryway is a reflection of the design and style of your home, so keep it as unique and personalized as the other spaces you love. Give visitors a taste of your personal design aesthetic.
n Ensure
your guests find your home easily by keeping your house or street numbers large enough to see and stylish enough to be noticed, yet easily read.
n Spice
it up. Since your foyer is not a space you spend a lot of time in every day, go for bolder patterns, colors, and textures—you won’t grow as tired of them in small doses. You can even splurge on a few nicer furnishings since they won’t show the wear and tear of everyday use.
n A
handsome door knocker will add elegance to your front door. If you have a doorbell, make sure it’s lighted so evening guests can let you know they’ve arrived.
n Floor decor. Be practical when choosing your entryway
flooring. Choose something that matches not only your style, but your lifestyle. Stone floors may be too hard if you have small children, and carpet may not work well if you have pets.

Good Storage = Better Sleep
REST
Clutter happens. But keeping it out of your bedroom is important to a good night’s rest—it keeps you from thinking about everything you should be sorting through and organizing. Keep anything that’s not essential out of sight. That goes for clothing, too.
If you have a desk in your bedroom, keep it neat and cleared of bills and correspondence.
Choose chests, dressers, and nightstands that offer generous storage space.
If the treadmill or elliptical machine lives in your room but is being used as a clothes rack, move it to the basement or garage.

THE OPTIMUM ENVIRONMENT
It’s what makes the bedroom a bedroom —your bed. Think about your favorite style, then create the bed of your dreams. Will it have an upholstered, metal or wooden headboard? Something vintage-inspired, or modern and eclectic? Your bedroom is your private space and doesn’t have to match the style in the rest of your home.
What colors are most soothing to you? Muted, soft tones inspired by sky, sea, and sand are often the best, and work well for wall colors, window treatments, and bedding. Begin with colors that make you feel calm and restful, and use them as a basis for your new décor scheme.
Artwork goes a long way to creating a cohesive décor scheme. Select canvases, prints or photos that are meaningful and coordinate with your new color palette. Consider one large piece or a grouping of smaller ones over your bed. You can make great artwork inexpensively by displaying your own favorite photos in black and white, or by framing textiles, book illustrations, and old maps.
While giving your bedroom a makeover, don’t forget the mattress. Is it more than eight years old? If so, it may be time to consider a new one. The first step in a better night’s sleep is having a supportive sleep set. New bed linens and a coordinated accent pillows will help complete the look.
Your bedroom setting is just as important as your mattress when it comes to good rest. A cool, quiet, dark room is most conducive to sleep. Consider window treatments that block out the light, a ceiling fan, and a sound machine to get your best rest. Bedside lamps can provide ambient lighting when needed.

sleep. Obvious signs of sleep deprivation include excessive sleepiness, yawning, irritability and daytime fatigue. When you’re ready to take your sleep seriously, start by evaluating your current sleep set. If it’s more than eight years old, sags or shows signs of wear—it’s time to begin shopping for a new sleep set.
The top 10 side effects of sleep deprivation are:
getting less than five hours of quality sleep each night.
1. Trouble with thinking and concentration. Focus, creativity, and problem-solving skills suffer when you don’t get enough rest.
6. Increased risk of heart disease. Sleep deprivation may lead to increased blood pressure and higher levels of inflammation, both of which play a role in heart disease.
2. Accidents. Daytime drowsiness can increase your risk of car accidents and other types of injuries. 3. Mood changes. Lack of sleep can make you moody, emotional and quicktempered. Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to anxiety and depression.
7. Weight gain. When you’re sleep deprived, the chemical balance that signals your brain when you feel hungry or full is off—making it more likely you’ll overindulge. 8. Increased risk of diabetes. Poor sleep can affect your body’s release of insulin, increasing your risk for Type 2 diabetes.
4. Weakened immunity. Getting too little sleep weakens your immune system and leaves you more susceptible to viruses like the common cold and flu.
9. Low sex drive. People who aren’t getting enough sleep often have a lower libido.

Shop Smart Mattress shopping doesn’t have to be nerve-racking. Make it fun by bringing your sleep partner and owning the process. Wear loose clothing, take your time, and try each mattress long enough to get a feel for the firmness of the model. Relax and recline just like you would at home, you can even bring your own pillow if you like.
Power Down
According to the National Sleep Foundation, the presence of electronic devices such as laptops and cell phones can make it harder to fall asleep. The glowing blue light from device screens suppresses your body’s production of melatonin, an important hormone that promotes sleep. To calm your mind and make it easier to drift off, avoid using your computer or checking your phone in bed.

Eight smart and clever decorating strategies
When it comes to interior decorating, small changes can make a big impact. Here are some of our favorite tips, tricks and strategies for creating a stylish home. Use one or use them all!
1. GET HYGGE
A Danish concept used to encompass a feeling of cozy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life, hygge is both a way of life and a trending design influence. Create your own interpretation of the hygge environment with elements such as candles, fireplaces, throw blankets, hand-knit sweaters and fuzzy socks.
2. TALK TEXTURES Image: Bradington-Young
From furry pillows to chunky, oversized throws, layering texture in a design plan adds dimension and visual interest.
The foyer is the perfect spot for a quirky or dramatic piece of furniture. It’s the first thing you and your guests see when you walk in and the last view upon leaving. Look for an accent chest or table that speaks to you and then pair it with an oversized painting or mirror.
5. WALL-TOWALL WOW Image: Universal
3. Embrace the Finish Look for metallic, mirrored and reflective finishes to add drama to a space. Anything shiny can liven up a room and reflective surfaces can make a space feel larger.
6. Hands-On Character
Installing new doorknobs throughout your house can give your home a fresh update for a minimal investment. Remember, a matte finish means you won’t see fingerprints.
8. FRONT & CENTER
Create an amazing first impression by painting your front door a bold new hue. It will immediately enhance your curb appeal.
If you’ll soon be painting a room, do it in this order: 1. Ceiling 2. Molding, trim, and baseboards 3. Cut in around trim 4. Walls 5. Second coat on walls 6. Relax and order pizza!

STYLE
Leather Lexicon Leather has its own terminology used to describe its origins, how it’s finished, and the factors influencing its look and feel. Here are some key terms to know: TOP GRAIN: Cowhides are split into two or three layers, and the outer layer is called “top grain.” The layers below are referred to as “splits.” Top grain is the most valuable and durable layer of leather.
FULL GRAIN: This term refers to the full display of the leather’s natural markings. It is a very supple type of leather. CORRECTED GRAIN: This type of leather has had its natural markings buffed out, giving the leather a uniform look. An artificial grain is applied after buffing.
All models and styles shown may not be available.
SEMI-ANILINE: The slight addition of pigment gives the leather a consistent color, while allowing the leather’s natural grain to come through. A finish is applied after coloring for additional durability. FULL ANILINE: Leather that has been dyed all the way through, with no added pigment, is considered “full” (or “pure”) aniline. This
process is used on the finest top-grain hides and produces a soft, rich finish. It also offers the least stain resistance. BONDED LEATHER: This process combines polyester/ cotton with polyurethane and leather bonded to the back of fabric to create an affordable, durable option that gives the look and feel of all-leather furniture.
