Ideal for 1-3 days Perth

440km return trip from Perth Ideal for an easy weekender or even an overnight trip, this coastal getaway north of Perth is full of interesting side trips, natural wonders and seaside activities.

Once you hit Cervantes, tuck into some of the fresh crayfish the area is known for at the Lobster Shack or dine at Cervantes Bar and Bistro.

RAC members save up to our entire range. For swimming, head to either Thirsty Point or Hangover Bay which is just out of town and also has barbecue facilities.

Just 20km further north is the, township Call RAC Travel on 1300 655 179 go to ofrac.com.au/holidayguides Jurien Bay. This is a fishing hotspot, so even or pop into your local Travel Centre if you’re a rankRAC amateur with a fishing rod

Leaving from Perth, Guilderton, a popular holiday town on the mouth of the Moore River, is your first option for a stop. Explore the upper reaches of the river and its wildlife on a river cruise. From there it’s on to Lancelin, famous for windsurfing, surfing and sandboarding. Hit the massive sand dunes for some sandboarding fun and four-wheel beach driving. Sandboards can be hired in the town. Afterwards relax and enjoy lunch with a beach view at the Endeavour Tavern or the Lancelin Beach Hotel. North of Lancelin, the region’s star attraction is the fascinating Pinnacles Desert in the Nambung National Park. The dramatic limestone structures, measuring up to four metres, have created an almost alien landscape. Photo enthusiasts should stay for a stunning desert sunset. The Desert Discovery Centre located in the park will teach you more about these mystical formations from the audio-visual displays. Half an hour north at Cervantes you’ll find more significant natural formations at Lake Thetis. The lake contains rock-like structures called thrombolites that are actually made up of micro-organisms similar to some of the Earth’s earliest life forms.

you should try your luck casting a line from the jetty. Jurien Bay also offers a unique interpretive snorkelling trail and the chance to meet sea lions on an interactive ocean cruise. Another 30km north of Jurien are the sheltered waters of Dynamite Bay at Green Head, great for swimming and snorkelling and not far to get back to Cervantes for an overnight stay.

Getting there Take the Indian Ocean Drive (continues north from Wanneroo Road) or take the inland route via Brand Highway.

Stay

at RAC Cervantes Holiday Park The newly renovated park offers direct beach access and accommodation choices such as villas and powered and unpowered sites. There is also a large swimming pool, recreation room with table tennis and a pool table, a playground, Seashells café, BBQs, campers’ kitchen, laundry and bathroom facilities.

1700km return trip from Perth Pastoral land and white sandy beaches slowly transform into open red dirt country as you travel from Perth to the Shark Bay region. This 10-hour drive can be done in a day but an overnight stop is recommended and Geraldton is the ideal halfway point. Along with its beautiful beaches, Geraldton has a revitalised waterfront and a flourishing café scene. Halfway between Geraldton and Kalbarri is Horrocks Beach, home to 2018’s best mainland beach in Australia. It will mean turning off from the highway but is an optional stop. The small township has a caravan park. From Geraldton, it’s 380km along the North West Coastal Highway to WA's first World Heritage Listed area – Shark Bay. Start your sightseeing at the Hamelin Pool stromatolites, the world’s oldest living fossils, and then Shell Beach where trillions of tiny shells in layers up to 10m deep fill a 70km stretch of dazzling white beach. The shells were once quarried and used to build walls in local buildings. Denham is your gateway to the region. Visit the Shark Bay World Heritage Discovery Centre there for a detailed and visual insight into the history and geology of this special region. Not far from Denham is Francois Peron National Park with its spectacular coastal scenery.

Once a working sheep station, you can visit the park’s Peron Homestead Precinct to learn more about the area’s Aboriginal and European history. You can also take a dip in the hot tub filled with warm artesian waters.

Just 26km east of Denham is the region’s most popular attraction – the world famous Monkey Mia dolphins. For decades, dolphin pods have visited the beach and interacted with humans. Visitors can take part in daily feeding sessions, strictly supervised by Rangers and learn more about the dolphins’ remarkable social behaviours.

This is the only accommodation at the famous dolphin beach. A major redevelopment will be completed by June 2018, transforming the resort with added camping facilities and powered sites, new family villas a second pool and more.

Access to the homestead is via a compacted dirt road suitable for two-wheel drives. The rest of the park requires a four-wheel drive. West of Denham on Dirk Hartog Island, visit the 1616 landing site of Captain Dirk Hartog and explore fascinating natural attractions, including the island’s blow holes. Day trips are available.

Cervantes

The resort offers camping and caravan sites, family cabins and deluxe beach-front rooms, plus a restaurant, bar and mini mart on site. Note: Caravan and camp sites will be closed for upgrades until June 2018.

Stay three nights in a powered site from $89*, non-members from $99*.

2500km return trip from Perth You’ll need a week to 10 days, but if you have the time, a Perth to Exmouth drive is definitely one for your WA bucket list. The 13-hour road trip will deliver you to breathtaking canyons and gorges and WA’s most unique aquatic adventures, where the star of the show is Ningaloo Reef. One or two overnight stays are recommended to break up the trip. You could stop at Geraldton and spend a day enjoying the sites there and then head on to Coral Bay and Exmouth. Another great option is to do a quick overnighter in Geraldton and then head to Kalbarri and spend a second night there.

Monkey Mia

Kalbarri, about seven hours from Perth, is a must-do if you have time. Home to the Kalbarri National Park, you can easily spend a day exploring the magnificent Murchison River and in-land gorges or walking the coastal cliff trails. Kalbarri is also one of WA’s premier fishing destinations and keen anglers shouldn’t miss the opportunity to take a fishing charter. Abseiling, canoeing, sandboarding or touring on quad bikes are also options, while a sunset cruise is a spectacular way to end the day and enjoy Kalbarri’s magnificent gorges and fiery red sunsets. On from Kalbarri, it’s another 540km along the North West Coastal Highway to Coral Bay, located in the middle of the

Ningaloo Marine Park. Ningaloo Reef is Australia’s largest fringing coral reef spanning about 300km from Carnarvon to Exmouth.

Being so close to shore is partly what makes Ningaloo so special. You don’t need to swim out far to be right over the reef exploring its colourful underwater wonders, including more than 500 different tropical fish species and more Northampton than 200 species of coral. Geraldton

The protected, calm waters also make Coral Bay a great place for kids to swim. Along with the small wonders along the reef, you can also get in the water with some giants of the deep, including manta rays and whale sharks. Whale shark tours, which leave from both Coral Bay and Exmouth, run from March to June and tours that take you to swim with manta rays run year round. Along with manta ray and whale shark tours, visitors to Exmouth can also take a tour beyond the reef to swim with humpback whales. Ningaloo Reef is one of the few places in the world where you can swim with humpback whales and following two successful trial periods in 2016 and 2017, a third trial will commence in August 2018. Also at Exmouth, you can head around the point to the stunning Cape Range National Park, where red gorges meet the bright blue of the ocean. Within the park, Turquoise Bay is a great place for swimming and also a spot where you can experience a drift snorkel, letting the current carry you over the reef. Head inland to explore Cape Range National Park. The park’s rugged landscape boasts breathtaking gorges, deep canyons and limestone ranges, with Yardie Creek snaking through the sheer red cliffs. Drive trails through the park are accessible by two-wheel drive and include routes to Mandu Mandu Gorge. Using a four-wheel drive you can also visit Shothole Canyon and Charles Knife Gorge or join a guided tour. Another way to experience the park’s striking surrounds is on a guided cruise along Yardie Creek.

For a fitting finale to your Exmouth adventure, watch the sunset from the hill where the 106-year-old Vlaming Head Lighthouse is located. There are panoramic views of the coast and you may even see a humpback whale passing during the migration season. The lighthouse is 17km north of the Exmouth township on the northern tip of Cape Range.

Getting there It is possible to do the 13-hour drive to Exmouth along the North West Coastal Highway in a day but an overnight stop is highly recommended. Ideally take two days, stopping overnight in Geraldton and Kalbarri. Alternatively, fly from Perth with Qantas to Learmonth Airport. An airport transfer bus operates from Coral Bay (must be booked in advance). Car hire is available with Europcar (RAC Travel can book these domestic services). RAC members save 10% on campervan hire through Apollo.

For decades now, West Australians have been heading to ‘Busso’ for a beachside break which, at a short two-and-a-half hours from Perth, is the perfect gateway to the South West. There’s a lot to enjoy around Busselton and along its extensive beachfront, with plenty of accommodation just a short stroll from the water’s edge.

660km return trip from Perth

To get there from Perth, take the South Western Highway and consider stopping for lunch at one of the quaint towns in the Blackwood River Valley along the way. The Blackwood River area, which takes in towns including Nannup and Boyup Brook, is particularly beautiful in springtime when the wildflowers put on a dazzling show of colour. The area is also highly regarded for its gourmet produce, ranging from fruit and vegetables to meat and dairy, along with wineries and breweries. Balingup, just two and a half hours from Perth, is surrounded by rolling green hills, lush forest and orchards. The town has a well-established community of artisans selling their wares through local galleries and markets. Less than 30km further south is Bridgetown – home to the renowned Blues at Bridgetown music festival. As with Balingup, the town is nestled among rolling hills and tall forest and has a lively arts and crafts scene. Another 38km along the South Western Highway you reach the town of Manjimup and the start of Southern Forests region. Manjimup has assumed a lead role in building the region to be the State's

The Southern Forests and Valleys region is filled with scenic walk trails the most famous of which is the 1000km Bibbulmun Track. Starting in the Perth Hills and ending in Albany it winds through lush karri forest between Pemberton and Northcliffe. If you’d like to hitch a ride through the forest, hop on the Pemberton Tram, a tourist railway service. The train leaves from the Pemberton Railway Station and on-board commentary will give you an insight into the region’s history. Twenty kilometres south-west of Pemberton in the Warren National Park are the Yeagarup Dunes – the largest land-locked mobile dune system in the southern hemisphere. They’re called mobile dunes due to the rate at which the mountains of sand are shifted by the winds. The massive dunes rise high above the surrounding landscape and stretch for several kilometres. Four-wheel drive tours through the dunes are available. Experienced four-wheel drivers can also tackle them on a self-drive tour. If you have time, head further south towards the small town of Northcliffe.

Surrounded by towering forests and rich coastal plains, Northcliffe is the gateway to the D’Entrecasteaux National Park which stretches along the coast between Augusta and Walpole. The park runs along a spectacular area of southern coastline. Be sure to visit the cliff tops of Point D’Entrecasteaux.

Getting there From Perth take the South Western Highway passing through the Blackwood River Valley then take the Vasse Highway towards Pemberton. Alternatively, drive east from Margaret River taking Mowen Road to Nannup and then along the Vasse Highway towards Pemberton.
