ANNOUNCEMENT

Introducing

On 1 September, RAC became the new naming rights partner of RAC Arena. By supporting an iconic Western Australian venue, we are able to provide unique opportunities and benefits for our one million members. There are more than 80 events and one million people visiting the Arena each year. Our members will receive exclusive offers including discounted or pre-sale tickets and ‘money can’t buy’ experiences, half priced bottled water and early access to the RAC Local Lounge.

This partnership will help us in our ongoing efforts to highlight road safety issues to Western Australians, including complimentary hire of the main Arena for our annual RAC bstreetsmart road safety event which more than 8000 high school students attend every year. Our naming rights has been funded by a reallocation of existing funds across our Sponsorship, Marketing and Brand areas.

There will be no impact or increased costs on products, services and other member benefits from this partnership. We look forward to engaging with WA more closely on road safety and delivering more benefits, experiences and memories for our members visiting RAC Arena. President’s message RAC appoints new Group CEO RAC Group CEO Terry Agnew will step down from his role in late March 2019 and Rob Slocombe, RAC Chief Operating Officer since September 2014, will be appointed Group CEO from that time. On behalf of RAC Council, I would like to acknowledge and thank Terry Agnew for his leadership as Group CEO and his significant contribution to RAC and its members over the last two decades.

Highway®, and leading the world in autonomous vehicle technology through the trial of Australia’s first autonomous and electric shuttle bus, the RAC Intellibus®, operating in South Perth since 2016.

Terry Agnew completed 20 years as Group CEO in August this year. During the 20 years RAC has grown to over one million members and has diversified into a range of businesses including tourism parks, home services, Auto Services and the emergent Cleantech business.

Perth will also be the first city in Australia, and among the very first in the world, to test and experience new driverless and fully electric vehicles which have been designed as an on-demand shared mobility service.

Terry’s focus on innovation has also delivered a range of initiatives across the RAC Group and its diverse businesses over the last five years, including the world’s first Attention Powered Car, Australia’s first electric highway – the RAC Electric

With the support of members, RAC is also in a strong position with revenue of $600 million, being a top 100 private company in Australia with an iconic and leading brand, very strong staff engagement, and has been assessed at Platinum standard over the last five years for workplace safety.

I am pleased to inform RAC members that we are delighted to appoint a person of Rob Slocombe’s calibre to the Group CEO role and look forward to him leading RAC to further success into the future and on behalf our one million members in Western Australia. Rob Slocombe joined RAC in September 2014 as the Chief Operating Officer and has successfully overseen a range of major projects in the areas of business growth, technology, employee engagement and innovation in the motoring business. Terry and Rob are focused on working together over the coming months to deliver a seamless transition for the organisation and building RAC’s future with its members. RAC’s leadership has been in great hands during Terry’s tenure and this will continue with Rob’s appointment to the role of Group CEO.

The RAC Rescue helicopter celebrated 15 years of service  Fortunately I haven’t had the need of this particular service but I’m very grateful it’s there as are the people who have benefitted from it. Clay Green  Thank you RAC for the fantastic life-saving service over the years. Zig Ozolnieks

Winning Exchange  Congratulations RAC for keeping these Rescue Angels saving lives – special shout-out to Andy, Garth and Jason for saving our son’s life near New Norcia four and a half years ago. Simply amazing. Liz Payne

Thanks for the tradie Like many ‘older’ women it’s difficult to know who you can trust when it comes to home maintenance. I was delighted with the RAC tradie who replaced the front door mortise lock – not an easy task when it’s from the 1970s and the door doesn’t comply to size. He was brilliant and managed to track down a lock, and the beauty of it was knowing that he had been vetted by the RAC I knew he was qualified. News in brief from the RAC and beyond

More than 100,000 potentially deadly airbags still on WA roads Many motorists with vehicles affected by the Takata airbag recall are still driving with the potentially deadly airbags installed. The faulty airbags can propel metal fragments from the bag at great speed when deployed, with one death in Australia already being attributed to one of the Takata airbags. In WA, about 160,000 airbags are still to be replaced across a large number of vehicle makes and models.

12

The most dangerous airbags, known as alpha airbags, were fitted to about 115,000 cars in Australia, with approximately 19,500 still potentially on the roads. These airbags require urgent replacement and drivers should not drive cars with these airbags until they have been replaced.

The ACCC’s Deputy Chair Delia Rickard has warned motorists not to be complacent about having airbags replaced. “Make no mistake, these airbags can kill and our advice is for consumers to check our website to see if their car is affected by this recall. If your car contains an alpha airbag, it should not be driven. To check if your vehicle is affected, visit ismyairbagsafe.com.au

Nominate and celebrate our local sporting heroes Local sports clubs provide an important point of connection for so many people in our community. And Western Australian sports clubs have produced their fair share of sporting greats as well. To celebrate the many achievements of our local sports people, the 2018 RAC WA Sports Star Awards recognises excellence in a diverse range of sporting fields across the State. Previously only members of the WA Sports Federation could nominate, but this year for the first time RAC members will also be able to nominate an individual or sporting organisation for the following awards:

When an emergency vehicle needs to get past you What should drivers do when an emergency or police vehicle, with sirens sounding and lights flashing, approaches? Drivers must give way to, or make every reasonable effort to give a clear and uninterrupted passage to every police and emergency vehicle displaying a flashing red or blue light or sounding an alarm.

AC Insurance Community R Club Award RAC Insurance Beyond Sport Award Nominations open 8 October and close 9 November 2018. To nominate, visit rac.com.au/sportsstar The RAC WA Sports Star Awards will be held on 7 February 2019.

However you may not break any road rules while giving way to an emergency vehicle – it’s not legal to run a red light or break the speed limit in order to get out of the way. When you see or hear the lights and sirens you must give way. Always indicate first to alert the driver of the emergency vehicle and other drivers around you of your intentions. If you’re travelling on a multi-lane road, indicate and move to the left as soon as you safely can. Drivers already on the left should make room for other vehicles trying to move left. If you’re not able to move left, slow down, indicate left and let the emergency vehicle move around you. It’s important to stay calm and assess the situation to make sure it’s safe before you change lanes, pull over or stop. If clearly directed by emergency services personnel, always comply, but be aware of the movement of traffic around you.

Your chance to call out WA’s riskiest roads coming soon Nominations for RAC’s next Risky Roads survey will open later this year. Risky Roads is the largest infrastructure survey of its kind in the State and recognises the safety concerns of those who know WA roads best – you. Any road or intersection that poses a safety threat can be nominated, from local streets to major highways.

What are the rules for child car seats in taxis and rideshares? Under WA regulations, taxis have always been exempted from the requirement to use a child car restraint. However there is a new requirement for taxi drivers to ensure passengers aged one to seven are restrained as safely as possible. Where there is no suitable approved child seat available in a taxi, children aged one to seven must be restrained in adult seatbelts. They can also only travel in the back row of seats, not the front. Adult seatbelts used for children must be properly adjusted and securely fastened to the best extent possible given the height and weight of the child. The responsibility for ensuring the seatbelts are properly used and the child is properly restrained sits with the driver. In both taxis and rideshare services, children under the age of one can be held on a lap or restrained in a seat, according to the judgment of their caregiver. The best option is always a child car seat and it’s recommended you check whether one is available when the service is booked.

14

Those with the most nominations are shared with government agencies and used by RAC to advocate for more action on road safety. Previous Risky Roads campaigns have had significant impact. Of the

20 riskiest roads and intersections identified by the WA community in 2017, over half have works funded to improve their safety. Nominations are welcome from all corners of our State. Members from regional areas, where roads are often particularly dangerous, are encouraged to contribute.

Online nominations will open in November this year at rac.com.au/riskyroads. If you’re unable to make your nomination online, call us on 9436 4598 and we can post you a Risky Roads nomination form in the mail.

A tragic wrong turn On the morning of 3 April 2017, truck driver Norm Spillman was delivering a load when his GPS took him down the wrong road. It was a mistake that lead to tragic consequences. The road unexpectedly turned into a dirt track and when the truck struck a pothole it slid sideways into trees, swinging the cabin around on an angle and crushing it. The crash was heard by a local farming family who called emergency services. The truck’s cabin was so badly damaged Spillman needed to be cut from the wreckage using rescue equipment known as the Jaws of Life. With serious crush injuries and in need of urgent medical care the quickest way out was by air. An RAC Rescue helicopter was called and airlifted Spillman to emergency medical care at Royal Perth Hospital with an on-board paramedic stabilising him during the flight.

ABOVE: Norm Spillman and his family.

Tragically, he lost his right foot as a result of the crash but is grateful to those who kept him alive during the critical time immediately after it. Spillman and his family recently met the crew of the Bunbury-based RAC Rescue helicopter to thank them personally for their care. For more RAC Rescue helicopter stories visit rac.com.au/racrescue The two RAC Rescue helicopters, based in Bunbury and Jandakot, are funded by the State Government and managed by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

Notice of

Annual General Meeting The 113th Annual General Meeting of the Royal Automobile Club of W.A. (Incorporated) (RAC) will be held at: RAC Head Office 832 Wellington Street, West Perth, 7pm on Tuesday 20 November, 2018. Business

Explanatory Statement

1. To declare the 2018 Annual General Meeting open. 2. To table the Notice of Meeting. 3. To receive apologies. 4. To table and confirm the minutes of the 2017 Annual General Meeting. 5. To table the report of the President. 6. To present for consideration: (a) the financial report of the RAC for the year ended 30 June 2018; and (b) a copy of the auditor’s report on the financial report. 7. To disclose the nature and extent of any material personal interests of Councillors declared. 8. Declaration of election of President and Senior Vice President. 9. Declaration of election of four (4) members to the Council by the Returning Officer. 10. To note that the Rules of The Royal Automobile Club of W.A. (Incorporated) (the “Rules”) have been amended and approved by the Commissioner for Consumer Protection to be consistent with the Associations Incorporation Act 2015 (WA). 11. To consider, and if thought fit, to pass the following resolution as an ordinary resolution: Resolution 1 “That, for the purposes of Rule 16.4 of the Club’s Rules and for all other purposes, approval is given for a maximum aggregate amount payable by the Club to Councillors (as a whole) to be: a) fixed at $480,000 for the 2018/2019 Financial Year; and b) increased each subsequent Financial Year in accordance with the Consumer Price Index compiled by the Australian Bureau of Statistics for Perth (All Groups). 12. Questions. 13. Close of Meeting.

Agenda Item No. 10 During the year the Club’s Rules were amended to align with the provisions of the new Associations Incorporation Act 2015 (WA) (Act). The amendments to the Rules have been approved by Council and by the Commissioner for Consumer Protection, Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, in accordance with the requirements of the Act. The amended Rules took effect on 3 July 2018. The Club’s Rules and associated By-Laws are available on the Club’s website at rac.com.au/ about-rac/purpose/corporate-governance.

By order of the Council: TT Agnew, RAC Group Chief Executive.

16

Agenda Item No. 11 Explanation for Resolution 1 The Club’s Councillors are permitted to be remunerated for their services, in accordance with Rule 16.4 of the Club’s Rules. The total pool of remuneration available to be applied towards the Councillors’ remuneration is referred to as the “maximum aggregate amount”. In 2012, the members approved a maximum aggregate amount of $400,000. This amount was indexed annually in line with the Consumer Price Index and is currently at $432,501. The Club is seeking approval from its members to increase this amount to $480,000 for the 2018/2019 Financial Year, and for such amount to be indexed annually in accordance with the Consumer Price Index. Due to the operation of the Act, payments made to Councillors who are members of a committee of Council now need to be included in the maximum aggregate amount, which is approved by members. This is the primary reason why the Club is seeking approval from its members to increase the maximum aggregate amount. The Council considers that the maximum aggregate amount of $480,000 is reasonable, given the significant contribution of time and skills that the fifteen Councillors provide to the Club.

RAC’s 2017/18

Annual Report RAC Group revenue for the year ended 30 June 2018 was $737.3 million, with an overall profit after tax of $5.3 million. The total net assets of the Group as at 30 June 2018 increased to $853.9 million. During the year a number of new member benefits have been introduced, including a partnership with Kleenheat which provides savings of up to 38 per cent on natural gas charges as well as LPG discounts. There has also been a substantial number of members using our fuel discount and the offering was also strengthened, with Better Choice joining Puma, Gull and Peak in providing a discount of four cents per litre at service stations across WA. Through our two youth memberships — the RAC Little Legends Club® and the RAC Road Ready® program — we’ve continued to provide free road safety information while also preparing our next generation of drivers for the path ahead. We also maintained delivery of critical face-toface road safety education in classrooms across WA, with over 1000 lessons delivered to almost 50,000 primary and secondary students. In April 2018, 7900 secondary students from 90 schools visited RAC Arena to watch RAC bstreetsmart, a confronting re-enactment of a serious car crash which exposes students to the realities of road trauma. In February 2018, a new children’s storybook — My Family, The Elephant and Me — was produced as part of RAC’s Elephant in the Wheatbelt campaign, which highlights the ongoing impact of road trauma in regional WA. The book was delivered to primary school students across the Wheatbelt and coincided with the painting of six unique road safety murals in towns across the region.

Horizons / October-November 2018

RAC also continued its focus on leading innovation nationally and internationally with the announcement of our intention to test several driverless passenger “Autonom” vehicles which have been designed as an on-demand shared mobility service. This trial builds on the RAC Intellibus® which has seen more than 8500 people experience an autonomous vehicle journey at South Perth. RAC strongly called out the inequity of the billions of dollars that have been missing over the past decade for vital transport projects in WA with only 28 cents for every dollar of motoring taxation collected by successive Federal Governments being returned to WA. This resulted in the 2018 Federal Budget delivering $3.2 billion for critical infrastructure projects and now forms part of a $5.4 billion road and rail package with the WA State Government. This builds on the Federal and State Government agreeing to a $2.3 billion road and rail infrastructure package for Western Australia in 2017, following RAC’s continued advocacy at both the state and national levels In addition, the 2018 WA State Budget also confirmed funding for important initiatives including the Regional Enforcement Unit, dangerous roads such as Indian Ocean Drive and Denny Avenue, and confirmation of State Government funding for the South West Emergency Rescue Helicopter Service. Our long-term approach to ensuring the safety of RAC members also saw the State Government deliver on its

ABOVE: RAC Group CEO Terry Agnew and RAC President Tony Evans

election commitment to introduce Slow Down Move Over laws in WA. RAC’s focus on providing new services has seen our Parks and Resorts family grow to seven with the recent acquisitions of RAC Karri Valley Resort and RAC Margaret River Nature Park. Throughout the year we were proud to continue our sponsorship of both RAC Rescue helicopters, managed by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services. We would like to acknowledge RAC Councillors for their ongoing commitment, and to recognise the enormous efforts of the entire team at RAC. We also extend our deepest thanks to all RAC members, of which there are now over one million in WA. Your ongoing support makes it possible for us to give back — to you and to Western Australia. or a copy of the concise annual F report call 9436 4665 or visit rac.com.au/annualreport

BELOW: 2018 Australia’s Best Cars judges.

THE

15 BEST CARS ON AUSTRALIAN ROADS We’ve done some important homework for car buyers to find 15 of the best new cars.

Horizons / October-November 2018

21

MOTORING

As an Australian new car buyer, you have a choice of more than 60 brands. That's even more car brands than the United States. While choice is a good thing, having such a wide field of cars to select from can add complexity to what can be a difficult but important decision. To help car buyers make an informed choice, RAC, in conjunction with auto clubs from across the country, has created the 2018 Australia’s Best Cars list. We drove and evaluated more than 150 new cars available on the Australian market in 2018 across a range of criteria. A panel of eight judges whittled the list down to 45 finalists and crowned winners across 15 categories. Evaluation criteria included safety, affordability, driveability, build quality, depreciation, fuel consumption and insurance costs, plus their on-road abilities.

Some brands won across several vehicle categories, but all winners represent the best all-round offerings for consumers in each category. Kia was one of the brands to particularly impress the judges with wins across four of the 15 categories: Best Micro Car, Best Large Car under $70,000, Best Family Wagon and Best AWD SUV from $50,000-$65,000. Mazda was another, placing first in three categories: Best Light Car, Best Small Car under $35,000 and Best Small 2WD SUV under $35,000. Alex Forrest, RAC manager vehicles and sustainability and Australia’s Best Cars judge, said the awards program looked at the whole vehicle ownership package, including servicing and depreciation. “Not only is a car one of the biggest purchasing decisions people make, it is also the most technically complex item most people own, and one which might one day save their life,” Forrest says.

“The Australia's Best Cars program seeks to influence the new car market by challenging manufacturers to continually improve the safety, fuel efficiency and affordability of their vehicles,” he says. Tests were based on real world usage of the various vehicle types to ensure the results had the highest level of relevance to consumers. “Using a comprehensive scoring system, we spent 12 months assessing the cars. All models were tested as a consumer would typically use them, which makes the list of winning vehicles a great starting point to help guide new car buyers in making an informed decision," says Forrest. “The 2018 Australia’s Best Cars winners not only offer great value for money, but are also highly rated in terms of their safety, how they drive and their fuel efficiency.” To see the full reviews of winners, visit rac.com.au/bestcars

The surprisingly perky Picanto is a perfect city and suburbs runabout car. Even on the open road at 100km/h, it’s a competent performer. Fuel economy is outstanding, repair costs are low and it has the bonus of a seven-year/unlimited kilometre warranty. Despite a five-star ANCAP safety rating when it first launched, the newest model Picanto didn’t meet the revised ANCAP requirements necessary to attain the latest five-star safety rating.

The Maxx offers competitive value for money. The interior is functional, the seats are comfortable and most drivers will appreciate the easy-to-use layout of the instrumentation and controls. Direct steering and a small turning circle make city driving a real breeze. The Mazda2 delivers one of the best driving experiences in the class and Mazda’s G-Vectoring Control assists in this competent handling.

This is as close to premium as you’ll get without paying premium small car prices. The Mazda3 uses quality materials with an emphasis on the functionality of its interior and its controls, and the ease with which people can interact with them. The Mazda3 excels with minimal fuel consumption and still only requires 91 RON fuel, unlike some of its competitors that require the significantly more expensive 95 RON premium fuel.

There is a touch of sporting elegance and refinement about the 125i M-Sport five-door hatch, both in the way it looks and drives. The distinctive body styling and interior presentation are smart. It has a cockpit-style cabin layout, though it’s a touch tighter on space than some of its peers. Overall the 125i M-Sport provides the prestige small car buyer with an enjoyably dynamic, high-quality, well-rounded package for everyday use.

The Camry Ascent Hybrid’s new 2.5-litre four-cylinder Dynamic Force Engine provides 11 per cent more power and four per cent more torque. Connectivity and creature comforts include an upgraded multimedia system and 7.0-inch display audio with Toyota Link connected mobility. Extensive engineering and design revisions make it class-leading for smoothness and quietness. It was also awarded top scores for fuel consumption.

In key areas like seat comfort and build quality, the 330i has few peers. Its marriage of ride quality and handling is impressive with its sharp handling in no way compromising the 330i’s ability to soak up bumps. Acceleration is brisk but not at the expense of fuel consumption. The downside to the 330i is its pricing but that’s countered to some degree by a reasonable list of standard features.

PRICE (indicative drive-away) $44,100 ANCAP SAFETY RATING Not rated BODY TYPE Five-door hatch FUEL ECONOMY/FUEL TYPE 8.0L/100km, PULP ENGINE/TRANSMISSION 2.0-litre four-cylinder, six-speed manual

The Kia Stinger offers almost SUV-like practicality but with the handling of a low-slung sports sedan. The interior fit and finish is excellent and far better than most people would expect. The entertainment system in the 200S includes a six-speaker sound system, a 7.0-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and, of course, Bluetooth compatibility. The Stinger scored particularly well for its seven-year/unlimited kilometre warranty.

The Carnival will carry eight average-sized adults so if you’re hauling kids then they’re going to have plenty of their own space. The Carnival also offers four child restraint anchor points. A recent mid-life upgrade for the third generation Kia Carnival has delivered increased safety, suspension refinement, an electric park brake and a new eight-speed automatic transmission, not to mention some styling and packaging upgrades to take the Carnival to the next level.

Visually, the i30 N remains understated, but in rev-matching mode it’ll produce a mechanical cacophony from the exhausts that’s music to the ears of enthusiasts. Rather than neck-snapping surges of power when the turbo gets boosted, the engine delivers a strong, seamless surge. On price, there are few in the category that can match the i30 N especially with such a good level of standard features and high build quality.

The Merc’s body and interior styling shout the performance car message. Driving enthusiasts will be impressed by its on-road talents. There’s a ballistic 2.0-litre turbo engine. Mated to a seven-speed DCT gearbox, performance is nothing short of exhilarating. But for a small hatchback, it’s not cheap and you can expect depreciation to bite harder. It’s reasonably fuel efficient by class standards but uses the dearer 98 RON fuel.

Handling has been a hallmark of the Mazda in recent years, and the CX-3 lives up to expectations in this area. Inside, the command control for the infotainment system is first rate and easy to use. Interior finishes are to a higher standard than you might expect. In the safety stakes, the CX-3 range is fitted with forward and reverse Smart City Brake Support. Additionally, Maxx grade and above get blind-spot monitoring and rear cross safety alert.

The 2.5i Premium model is competitively priced, generously equipped, and a standout in design and function. The Outback blends the space and practicality of a conventional station wagon with the appeal and functionality of a higher-riding SUV. Its off-road ability on rutted tracks, steep inclines, or loose or muddy surfaces is better than most would expect. It’s not the fastest or most powerful in its class, but has good performance where it’s needed.

The GT-Line’s interior is well appointed with leather trim and impressive build quality creating a genuinely luxurious look and feel. The Sorento is a practical and classy family wagon. Seven seats are standard and space and comfort are both considered amongst the best in class. Highly desirable autonomous emergency braking with a forward collision warning system is now standard across the range, together with a host of other safety features.

Both the internal and external styling of the XC60 are elegant. The cabin has a very upmarket feel, with a mix of woodgrain panels, leather and brushed metal accents. The new XC60 has a collision avoidance assistant to help the driver in making evasive manoeuvres, and oncoming lane mitigation, which steers the vehicle away from a potential head-on crash. The all-wheel drive system is fitted across the range and driving is surprisingly smooth.

Performance from the Ranger’s 147kW, 3.2litre, five-cylinder turbo-diesel is impressive whether on-road or lugging its way through the bush. Overall the big Ford’s road manners are far more car-like and sophisticated than might be expected in a vehicle built primarily to work for a living. Towing ability and practical design are important in a ute, and the Ranger isn’t found wanting. For safety, the XLT’s standard fit-out has a full suite of airbags.

Why farmers (and other men) struggle to hear their wives “My wife says I never listen, at least I think that’s what she said”. If, like many male farmers, your wife complains of you not listening, there may be a justifiable reason. And this reason isn’t just applicable to farmers; it can affect anyone who has been subjected to noise without hearing protection. Long term exposure to noisy machinery typically results in a particular type of hearing loss that causes a reduction in high frequency hearing. It’s this component of hearing that’s necessary for clearly understanding the higher pitched voices often displayed by women. So, while it may well be the case that you’re not a particularly good listener, it’s also possible that your brain is tuning out because it’s not receiving a clear signal when your wife speaks. We often joke that a male farmer’s hearing becomes incompatible with his wife’s voice. And, at risk of becoming very unpopular with all those patient wives out there, it’s highly likely that you’re not even aware that you’re tuning out. Hearing typically depletes gradually and it’s usually not until there’s enough of an annoyance to both you and those around you that someone seeks professional advice.

To determine if you’re a likely candidate for noise related high frequency hearing loss, here are some questions to ask yourself: • Do you have particular difficulty listening in noisy situations such as social settings? • Do you feel like people mumble and have trouble understanding speech clearly? • Do you struggle to listen when you’re in a different room from the person speaking? Do you struggle to understand your young children or grandchildren? • And of course…does your wife complain of having to frequently repeat herself? If you answered yes to any of the above questions, it might be time to consider a hearing test. BEHIND THE SCENES at

Designed as a giant puzzle and inspired by Fremantle’s historic Round House, the award-winning RAC Arena is a local landmark. More than four million people have gone through its doors to see some of the world’s biggest and best artists.

RAC Arena has played host to a stellar list of world-class acts and events from the Rolling Stones to the Dalai Lama, the Hopman Cup to Disney on Ice. Behind the glitz and glamour is a well-oiled machine with more than 1500 fulltime, part-time and casual staff. The Arena puts on around 85 shows a year – one third of those sporting related – and its staff are tasked with the responsibility of making sure events run smoothly, the audience has an unforgettable experience, and celebrity guests feel at home.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Perth Wildcats 2017 final; Walking with Dinosaurs was a massive production; Arena’s backstage crew set up for the next show.

Getting busy backstage From the moment the lights go down on one production, up to 200 people can be swarming over the venue floor, packing down and working non-stop until just minutes before doors open for the next event. “The closest we have come with a tight turnaround was after Katy Perry’s 2014 show, which had the most rigging we’ve ever had in the roof,” says the Arena’s general manager Michael Scott. “She finished her show at 11pm and we had a Wildcats game the following day. We were ready just in time for a midday door opening.” Putting down the wooden basketball court is a precision operation with

that travelled above the audience carrying Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee as he performed an impressive solo in 2015.

Any shows requiring ice present unique challenges. Huge interlocking aluminium panels are laid on top of the floor and glycol tubes are used to chill the panels to create ice using massive condensers in the loading dock. The ice is built up in layers over days.

The Arena’s acoustics are lauded. Violin superstar André Rieu believed the Arena had the best sound in the world. In 2014, Canadian crooner Michael Bublé tested the acoustics by putting down his microphone and successfully singing unamplified to a stunned full house.

To date, the show with the most trucks to unload was Walking with Dinosaurs – a production that was quite the spectacle backstage as each dinosaur came in its own truck.

“We treat the venue a little bit like a Grand Piano,” says Scott. “We keep fine tuning the building. Our technicians monitor the sound at every single music show and take readings from every part of the building.”

Among the craziest things the Arena has seen, says Scott, was a specially-built 360 degree rollercoaster

Looking after the stars Backstage, the philosophy is to make the artists feel as comfortable as possible by creating a homely atmosphere. “We have a bit of a saying: make normal people feel like stars and make the stars feel like normal people,” Scott says. The simple British staple shepherd’s pie is a favourite of the Rolling Stones and they eat it before each gig. The band sends the recipe ahead to the venue to make sure it is cooked to specification. Pink brings her children on tour with her, and at her most recent visit to Perth, the Arena’s backstage staff created a slime station to entertain them. Sometimes the venue is even asked to buy clothes, as rock stars don’t 28

have time to shop when on the road for long periods. Scott says that when artists ask for an unusual item in their contract like single colour M&Ms, they are often just testing the venue. “They’ll do it as a litmus test to see if we’re paying attention and that we have read their requirements. If they can see we have, then they know they can relax and are in good hands. We take their requests very seriously.” And they will be catered for. During the 2015 Hopman Cup at the Arena, a jet-lagged Serena Williams famously asked for – and received – an espresso mid-game, which turned the tide in her favour. With a capacity of 15,000 and crowds from WA, interstate and even overseas, the Arena regularly sells out.

“It’s often in the top five venues for its size in the world for sales,” says Scott. “So that means that Perth really just can’t get enough good live entertainment.”

DRIVERLESS VEHICLE SURVEY We asked how West Australians feel about driverless vehicles on our roads Driverless vehicles are no longer the stuff of science-fiction. Rapidly advancing technology means the biggest disruption to transport and mobility since the invention of the car itself is now in sight. Many vehicles already have built-in automated vehicle (AV) technology and these features are becoming increasingly common, including autonomous emergency braking, lane keeping and supervised autonomous mode, where drivers rely on technology to steer, brake and/or accelerate. Knowing they are coming gives us time to prepare and to work out what we want a future with automated vehicles to look like.

NEW WAYS WE’RE BUYING CARS The days of buying a car from a dealership are not over, but they are changing, and it’s now more convenient than ever. By Glenn Butler

Buying a car used to be so simple. Dad would see our neighbours drive up in a sleek new Mazdabishi Falcadore and hear how they outwitted the wisecracking salesman to secure a razor sharp deal that cost little more than the tradein on their old jalopy. Horizons / October-November 2018

Envious, we’d head down to the same lot — just to have a look, mind — and somehow end up with a shiny new machine we hadn’t researched, had paid for with a loan we could barely afford, wondering how the heck it all happened.

Our trust in the internet goes further than that. In a 2017 Roy Morgan survey, nearly half (42 per cent) of Australian men said they would be comfortable buying their next car completely online, skipping the dealership altogether.

Buy cars direct

It wasn’t just younger generations who felt this way – the survey found all age groups under 65 voiced a similar willingness to purchase sight unseen.

Today, new car buyers have more information about the vehicles they are interested in than ever before. Twothirds of car buyers research potential options before they go shopping via the internet, with newspapers (11%) and television (5%) a long way behind.

And we’re getting pretty close to doing just that, with Subaru and Tesla leading the way in online car buying.

33

MOTORING

Like most car manufacturer websites, at Subaru.com.au you can build your ideal new car, right down to the alloy wheels and floor mats. But where others then funnel your enquiry to a bricks-n-mortar car dealer for a test drive, Subaru shoppers can skip the test drive, place an order, sign the contract and place a holding deposit – all online. Subaru stops short of delivering the car to your door, with buyers asked to choose which dealer they’d like to collect the car from.

Tesla, however, will deliver your online purchase to your home or office or place of choice. Australians had the opportunity earlier this year to buy Holden’s all-new imported Commodore online weeks before cars arrived in dealerships as part of Holden’s first foray into ‘endto-end’ online retailing. The pilot program has been extended to all Holden models for Melbourne customers and offers delivery to your door.

Pick up milk, bread and a new car Displaying cars in shopping centres has also become a popular selling tactic. When Tesla arrived in Australia in 2014 it opened a couple of traditional dealerships in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, but more notably it placed display cars in high traffic shopping centres like Chadstone in Melbourne and Westfield Marion in Adelaide. The success of the Tesla shopping centre showrooms caught the attention of other car brands and what started as a trickle has become a tsunami. Subaru entered shopping centres in 2016 and recently launched three more pop-up shops across Victoria, NSW and QLD, taking the total to six, offering vehicles for test drives and the complete sales process. “The response to our innovative shopping centre stores is very positive,” says Subaru Australia’s managing director Colin Christie.

Peter Clarke

“Convenience is a key driver for our customers, especially as the traditional vehicle purchase process continues to rapidly transform,” says Christie. Mitsubishi, Renault, Holden and Audi are all opening or announcing plans for branded stores in shopping centres. Mercedes-Benz has chosen a different path, partnering with premium coffee purveyor St Ali to launch a Mercedesbranded cafe and restaurant in Melbourne’s CBD. There is no ‘car sell’ at all. Instead patrons can soak up the brand experience in peace as they sip a latte or bite into a G-wagen burger.

No haggling, no buyer’s remorse Negotiating a price has long been a bugbear for car buyers and they now have options for cutting to the chase. Toyota’s Drive Happy Project is taking the hard sell out of car buying. Under the project, salespeople no longer earn a commission on each car they sell but are instead paid a set salary and a bonus based on customer satisfaction. Additionally, initial car pricing is more transparent and includes all drive away costs so there are no hidden extras. Potential customers can also take overnight test drives before buying and have seven days after buying to return the vehicle for a full refund if they change their mind.

The Drive Happy Project, launched in New Zealand in April, saw an immediate drop in retail prices on popular Highlander and Hilux models by almost $10,000, according to NZ news site Stuff.co.nz. The new prices are much closer to what previous customers paid after haggling for discounts, says Stuff.co.nz, often called the “transaction price”. While Toyota has no plans to introduce Drive Happy in Australia, the premise has been proven.

Car brand memberships Why buy one car when you can buy several? In January this year, Ford Australia introduced a new-car loan pilot program called Ford 2nd Car. Under the program, buyers of Ford’s Ranger and Escape SUVs can, for a fee, borrow a Mustang sports coupe for two weeks during their first two years of membership. The program is Ford’s way of “exploring new mobility solutions” for a future where, instead of buying a car, we buy a car brand membership and have access to their entire range. For example, a small hatchback or people mover for workdays, an SUV or sports car for weekends.

In Europe, BMW’s DriveNow program has been running since 2011, giving members access to a 6000-strong fleet of BMW and Mini vehicles across Europe, which they rent by the minute. The program has logged more than one million customers and is so successful that earlier this year BMW bought out DriveNow founding partner Sixt. In April, BMW and Mercedes-Benz formed a joint venture with their respective car sharing schemes (DriveNow and Car2Go) in a bid to increase reach and reduce overheads. Many other car brands also have nascent car sharing programs, though none have yet reached our shores. However there are independent companies offering car sharing services in Australia, mainly on the eastern seaboard. Operating now for many years, companies like GoGet, Car Next Door and Flexicar offer innercity dwellers the use of a vehicle when needed, without the full costs of car ownership. In WA, the City of Fremantle is currently working on plans to get a similar car sharing scheme established here. So whether you want to buy, borrow or share a car, the future is all about choice, from visiting a showroom to just placing your order from anywhere you happen to be.

Crikey Campers

BELOW: Camping at Cape Leveque.

Camping is the old-fashioned family holiday that’s not only incredibly good value for money, it’s also one of the best tonics for escaping the stresses of everyday life. Kerry Faulkner explores the options and pleasures of camping in Western Australia. By Kerry Faulkner

For camping aficionados, there’s nothing better than pitching a tent and putting the kettle on. Spending time de-stressing in nature’s glorious expanse transcends everyday existence and can pull a family closer, tightening bonds between adults and children through shared experiences. Pitching a tent may appear simple and sometimes fraught on the surface but on a deeper level takes teamwork and cooperation, perseverance and endurance. For Perth mother Nikki Tremain and her adventurous family, of husband Dean and three daughters Scarlett (8), Layla (6) and Maddison (4), camping is also about having loads of fun, wrapped up in having the kind of freedom many young kids growing up in the big city don’t have in their everyday lives.

Both Nikki and Dean’s families camped when they were kids and they are determined their girls will enjoy those same precious experiences. “We grew up camping and we loved it,” Nikki explains. “We wanted the girls to experience the same things we did – just being free, being able to run around, meet friends in the caravan park and being outside and in nature.

“As kids we’d spend all our time at the beach or bushwalking. It was fantastic and our children have been camping from a very young age and they love it too. They come back when they’re hungry and sleep really, really well.” Every January, the family spends two weeks camping in Busselton, just like Dean did as a child. While the Tremains started out camping in a tent, as the family has grown they’ve progressed to a fold-out camper trailer which has taken them all over the State.

T R AV E L

In October, the Tremain’s next camping adventure will be in Dwellingup, which has a smattering of campsites in State Forest that are perfect for a few days respite just an hour and twenty minutes from Perth. The only facilities will be a toilet (the long-drop kind) and a fire pit – the perfect place to get some practice for the family’s planned five-week trek along the famous Gibb River Road in the Kimberley in 2020.

Pre-trip planning From El Questro in the very north of the State to Waychinicup National Park in the south you can find and book your campsite online from the many resources available. Try the West Australian Government’s caravan and camping services to look for everything from true bush camps through to caravanning sites. Use the interactive map to pick a destination and filter your search for inclusions and other details, such as whether there is water and power and if camp fires, generators and dogs are allowed. However, to find out what a destination is really like, there’s nothing like talking to the people who’ve been there. BELOW: Fonty’s Pool in Manjimup.

Horizons / October-November 2018

The Facebook page Camping in WA has more than 17,000 followers who love to share their experiences and camping knowhow. The website Western Australia Now and Then is also a handy stopping point for campers with its list of campsites, caravan parks and rest stops, along with product reviews on camping gear.

And don’t forget the camper’s motto – take what you bring and leave only footprints. The site is based on lived research by founder Marc Glasby who’s been camping and travelling for nearly 40 years. Over time, Glasby says there’s been a very welcome trend for country shires to be a lot more accommodating of campers. “One of the best we’ve come across is the Shire of Irwin which includes Dongara and Port Denison up in the Mid West. They have some excellent campsites along the coast like Cliff Head North and Cliff Head South which have wonderful facilities like toilets and barbeques and are free,” he says.

Camper’s kit for beginners omfy chairs that don’t C cut off your circulation Good inflatable mattresses (that stay inflated) Portable stove Cooking utensils Matches (with spares) Head lamps Plastic basin for washing up Rubbish bags A clothesline Insect repellent A multi tool An esky and ice will do for small trips and an Engel fridge with a freezer section is essential for longer stays. And don’t forget the camper’s motto – take what you bring and leave only footprints. Clear all your rubbish before you leave.

‘Glamp’ your camping Plenty of people turn their tents into virtual homes away from home. Here are a few tips to glamp your camp: oleman’s Hot Water on C Demand unit delivers hot water up to 30 degrees Celsius in seconds for washing up or bathing, or put a solar shower in a shower tent and create your own ensuite. An enclosed gazebo gives fly-free dining. A rechargeable fan ads extra comfort. Gear manufacturers make bringing creature comforts to your campsite easy with collapsible items, from laundry hampers to wine coolers. Many glam campers’ tent of choice is the distinctive canvas Bell Tent which stands out from your common varieties because of its groovy shape.

Gearing up Derek Pallister started working in his father’s camping store Go Camping WA at age 15 and more than 25 years later still works there. He says camping, by its very nature, is a back to basics pursuit, and over all the years he’s been selling camping gear, not a lot has changed, although new technologies have resulted in some improvements with brighter lights, longer-lasting batteries and more efficient gas stoves. Plus, many fourwheel drives now have second batteries to power gadgets like car fridges. Another newish development, particularly enticing to first-time campers is the inflatable tent, which is pumped up via a small 12 volt pump – a much easier tent to wrangle than those with traditional fiberglass poles or the lightweight aluminium frames on pop-up tents. The blow-up tent packs small, is easy to erect and has nothing to break. But it’s also more expensive and, even with stability straps, will move around more, especially in high wind. Pallister says regardless of your budget, there is a tent for you. As little as $350 will get a good size nylon tent that’s compact when packed. Canvas is stronger and breathes, which minimises condensation inside but is also more expensive.

ABOVE: D’Entrecasteaux National Park.

Favourite camping spots Western Australia has a huge range of camping destinations. There are former sheep stations like Yeo Lake Homestead (free camping) 200km north-east of Laverton, to Mitchell Falls Campground (just $11 a night per adult) in the north where the Punamii-unpuu/Mitchell Falls walk trail winds past smaller waterfalls to the stunning Mitchell Falls at the end. The Parks and Wildlife Service says some people make the two-and-a-half hour trek one way and get a helicopter flight back. The Tremain family’s most loved camps are Fonty’s Pool near Manjimup with its big campsites, immaculate grounds and a pond for swimming, and Yardie Homestead Caravan Park (26km from Exmouth) on the edge of Cape Range National Park and close to stunning beaches like Turquoise Bay. Other spots recommended by RAC members include: Lake Indoon, Shire of Carnamah

Barn Hill Beach Station,

Tania Busch

Leschenault Estuary (north of Bunbury) Gina Dent Banksia Camp, D’Entrecasteaux

National Park, Pemberton region Johnese Gee

Helena and Aurora Range, 100km

north-east of Southern Cross Kiran Patel To search for campsites in WA’s National Parks visit parks.dpaw.wa.gov.au

For both affordability and quality, Pallister says the Flex-Bow tent is canvas and simple to put up. “There’s also a trend toward the oldschool touring tents that have been around since Noah was a boy – four pegs and a pole in the middle,” says Pallister. “But a lot of people don’t like the pole, so it’s a limited market.” Camping guru Marc Glasby says the most extravagant thing he’s ever seen while camping is a tent with an air conditioner wedged in the window. Nikki Tremain says her indulgent camping kit inclusion is her Thermomix, which she takes for long stays and

42

which stacks perfectly under one of the kids’ seats in the back of the car. Whichever way you choose to tackle it, camping remains a simple, reallife adventure that anyone can enjoy and its many benefits are today being actively promoted by community groups such as Nature Play and even by schools holding camping nights on their ovals. Once you buy the essentials, it really is the ideal low-budget getaway: as little as $10 a night can get you a tent site in a

pristine State Forest with entertainment such as swimming, bushwalking, time-out with family and other likeminded campers, absolutely free.

News and info for travellers

Karri Valley never looked better

RAC members save up to 20% off accommodation* After a wonderfully positive response to our acquisition of RAC Karri Valley Resort from our members and the WA community, we are now pleased to reveal this favourite WA spot is looking better than ever.

Restaurant, reception and Forest and Lakeview Chalets.

Since we purchased Karri Valley Resort in Pemberton, we’ve been busy undertaking an extensive refurbishment to the main guest areas including The Lakeside

The Lakeside Restaurant has been fully refurbished and extended to include a sit-down lounge area for guests to enjoy whilst looking at the gorgeous views of Lake Beedelup.

All of the chalets and rooms are undergoing a fresh make-over, with new and modern furnishings.

What’s the advantage of booking my holiday through a travel agent? Booking with an accredited travel agent means you’re leaving the job to an expert who has access to complex booking systems that have more information than consumerbased online booking platforms. An agent can see all booking options at once and quickly contrast and compare which best fits your intended itinerary. They can get you better flight connections, the best airfares and first-to-market offers. They are

Horizons / October-November 2018

also good at handling complicated itineraries – a much slower process that can be prone to easy errors when you do it yourself. Very importantly a travel agent is someone to fall back on in the event that you run into problems such as cancelled or delayed flights that may affect other connections. Australian travel agents with official ATAS accreditation must meet strict standards, so you can be sure you’re dealing with a trusted agency.

More improvements to rooms and chalets will continue this year providing guests with a better holiday experience. In the meantime, why not visit Karri Valley now? As a member you’ll save up to 20 per cent at any of the seven RAC Parks & Resorts. To find out more visit racparksandresorts.com.au

THE WORLD’S MOST

AMAZING CRUISE SHIPS Cruise ships are getting bigger and more innovative, but which have the biggest ‘wow factor’? Self-confessed cruise geek Helen Foster took a look for us. By Helen Foster

Ovation of the Seas is currently the largest ship sailing in Australian waters and there is little it lacks. At 348m long, the 18-deck-high megaship from Royal Caribbean is next level. On its top deck is something that looks like a fairground ride – a capsule named the North Star rises 90m in the air offering passengers inside a 360-degree view of their surroundings. Inside the ship is just as stimulating – you’ll find bumper cars, simulated sky diving and the Bionic Bar, where your drink is made by robot bartenders. It’s surprising anyone ever wants to get off.

Horizons / October-November 2018

The Ovation is not alone in its quirky, wonderful and futuristic offerings. “Every ship wants the biggest and best things to offer their customers and it means there have never been more options of things to do on board,” says RAC travel consultant Adam Steward. “Cruising now is as much about what’s on the ship you choose as the ports it sails to.”

Action and adventure on board Many ships wow their passengers with a range of jaw-dropping activities and facilities. The biggest ship around, Royal Caribbean’s newest ship the Miami-based Symphony of the Seas, includes among its novel touches a submarine-themed Escape Room. Although slightly smaller than the Ovation or the Symphony, at a mere 330m but with an impressive 19 decks, the Majestic Princess, which is coming to Australia for the first time this year, includes highlights like the SeaWalk,

47

T R AV E L a transparent pathway that lets you walk high above the ocean, and an incredible stage show which includes flying drones. If you prefer driving to walking, book onto Norwegian Cruise Line’s new Bliss. It features the largest go-kart race track on the seas where up to 10 passengers can race against each other. It also has a water slide with transparent sections that shoots you out over the edge of the ship before twisting back inwards. But when it comes to water slides, the one on the Carnival Legend is the king of them all. Green Thunder™ is the fastest, steepest slide at sea, sending riders hurtling along at up to 65km/h.

Mega-luxury Many mega ships also offer opulent touches like private concierge rooms with exclusive bars or dining areas and upgraded fine-dining restaurants from some of the world’s best chefs for a luxurious boost to your trip. Total luxury, however, has often been the preserve of the smaller ships – that is until this December when the new 306m long Celebrity Edge ship arrives at her home port in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. With cabins by renowned interior designer Kelly Hoppen MBE it offers more suites than other Celebrity ships. One unique drawcard is the ship’s new staterooms that feature

an Infinite Veranda – patio doors that open fully so your cabin and balcony flow seamlessly from one to the other. There are also its Edge Villas which are virtually a two-storey house at sea. Another stand out feature is the Magic Carpet, a bar and dining space suspended from the side of the ship that actually moves deck as the day progresses.

“ Every ship wants the biggest and best things to offer their customers and it means there have never been more options of things to do on board.” Possibly the most exclusive ship afloat, however, is The World. This is a residential ship consisting of 165 private ‘homes’ that literally sail the world 365 days a year – the cheapest starting at US$2 million. You also need to be endorsed by two current residents and have US$10 million in assets to be eligible. If the idea of a life at sea sounds appealing, but your bank balance doesn’t quite meet that criteria, next year will see Viking Cruises launch a 245-day itinerary from London starting at a mere AU$117,995!

Where to next? Given how fast things are being added to ships, what’s coming next? Expect even bigger capacity cruise ships carrying more than 6000 people – the Costa Smeralda which is currently being built, will carry 6600. Another big trend is the launch of entire cruise lines for specific markets, like European river cruises U by Uniworld, or the new line aimed at millennials from Virgin Group, Virgin Voyages. Next year Blue World Voyages will be targeting people interested in fitness and health. As well as big ships and themed ships, the on-board innovations and wow factors are also likely to continue, as ships of all sizes and destinations compete to impress their guests. What RAC Travel’s Adam Steward is most excited about, though, comes from French cruise line Ponant. “They’re designing a ship that has an underwater bar with a window so you can see the marine life outside the ship.” But it doesn’t end there: “They’ll also pump in sounds from outside, so if there are whales and dolphins nearby you’ll hear them which is just incredible.”

Spoil yourself at sea While the bigger ships are offering more and more attractions, the smaller ships are focusing on luxury, with touches like butler service and premier bed linen. Here’s what you’ll find on some of the lines that pride themselves on exclusivity and the personal touch. Regent Seven Seas: The big difference on the all-suite ships of Regent Seven Seas is that everything is included – meals, drinks, specialty dining and unlimited shore excursions in every port. Watch for the arrival of their newest ship Seven Seas Splendor in 2020 which they claim will be the most luxurious afloat. Crystal Cruises: Crystal has one of the biggest space-per-guest ratios in the industry. November sees the launch of the newly refurbished Crystal Serenity, including more of their butler-served penthouses and a new restaurant by sushi master Nobu Matsuhisa. Azamara Club Cruises: The luxury line for adventurers, Azamara is renowned for visiting lesser known ports and for innovative shore excursions, some of which even see you staying overnight. Their newest ship Azamara Pursuit has given them the chance to add another 60 destinations to the company’s portfolio including the Falkland Islands.

Horizons / October-November 2018

Seabourn: The five ships in the Seabourn line describe themselves as akin to being aboard a private yacht, with their smaller ships carrying only 458 people (compared to more than 5000 on some of the mega ships). Cunard: Home to the famous Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mary 2, Cunard offers a throwback to the golden age of sea travel – dressing for dinner is still very much the done thing. In 2022 it will launch the fourth ship in the line, as yet unnamed. It is the first new Cunard ship in 12 years. Silversea: Their fleet of small ships are highly tailored to the destinations they serve, allowing you to get close up in difficult to navigate areas like Antarctica. With a staffto-passenger ratio of one-to-one they offer impeccable service, and refurbishment has even seen ships like the Silver Cloud being altered to carry as few as just 200 passengers on some sailings.

New Jimny coming You might remember Suzuki’s smallest four-wheel drive as the Sierra. It was sold in Australia with that name for almost 20 years from 1981. Nowadays, it’s called the Jimny, which is the name it had used in overseas markets since 1975, when it sported a 539cc two-stroke engine. These engines were designed to burn oil and earned the phrase, “If it ain’t smokin’, it’s broken.” Now, there’s an all-new Jimny on the way. The outgoing model had been around since 1998, making it one of the longest-running models on the market. The new Jimny’s engine will be a 1.5-litre, 75kW unit, which sounds paltry until you consider the outgoing one is a 1.3 with 60kW. It’s expected to arrive in Australia in early 2019.

Goodwood goes driverless

Skoda returns to maker Perth man Ray Petty has sold a rare 1960s Skoda Trekka utility vehicle back to the company after he spent 10 years restoring it to perfect, original condition. One of only 3000 built, the vehicle was based on the chassis of the 1950s Skoda Octavia, with the body designed and constructed in New Zealand. Petty found the vehicle in Kalgoorlie in 2006 and soon after began the decade-long restoration process. He sold it to the Skoda factory museum in 2017 and it was shipped from WA in February 2018. “They purchased mine because I rebuilt it to original specs,” Petty said. “I never thought I would sell a car to a factory museum.”

An electric driverless racing car has made it to the top of the iconic hill-climb course at Goodwood in southern England. The vehicle, called Robocar, became the first ever fully driverless racing car to successfully complete the hill-climb, which is the centrepiece of a world-renowned event for classic cars and cutting edge modern cars. Robocar was designed by automotive futurist Daniel Simon to contest a proposed autonomous racing series called Roborace. At the same Goodwood event, a 1965 Ford Mustang which had been endowed with autonomous abilities also attempted the hill-climb but it ran into some hay bales along the way.

WA most improved Western Australian new car sales were well on the road to recovery at the half way mark of 2018, with our slowly improving economy contributing to WA being the most improved State or Territory. Sales were up 4.1 per cent in January to June 2018, compared to the same period in 2017. The most popular vehicle overall was the Toyota Hilux 4x4, which includes fleet and private purchasers. The biggest selling passenger car was the Hyundai i30, while the Toyota Prado was the most popular SUV and the Hilux was top of the light commercials. Nine Ferraris were also sold in the first half of 2018.

Nissan Navara Nissan has given its Navara ute its third update in four years and you could look at that in two ways. The glass-half-full view would be Nissan is very keen to ensure it has a viable product to compete against the big players in this market, being the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger. The biggest changes have been to the steering and the coil spring rear suspension. When this generation Navara was first launched in 2015, its rear coil spring suspension was a first for the mainstream

52

twin cab ute sector. When not carrying a load, it rode well, but with some weight in the back the handling became somewhat less controlled. As a result it was revised in 2016 with some new dampers, which improved it but not completely. This latest Navara was launched in February 2018 with far more extensive changes to the rear underpinnings. In particular, this Navara gets dual rate rear springs, meaning the springs allow for a smoother ride when the ute is unladen, and get stiffer as the spring is compressed, such as when carrying cargo and cornering.

The previous Navara’s ‘dynamic rebound damper’ bump stops were retained for this revision. On most vehicles bump stops are small, solid rubber items designed to absorb energy when the suspension nears the end of its travel. On the Navara, they are larger and play more of a role in controlling the suspension travel, which Nissan says also helps reduce lateral body movements and improve the Navara’s handling and stability. We tried the Navara with a number of different rear tray loads and a couple of trailers. It was definitely better

controlled than previous iterations and more so than some leaf-sprung rivals. There are also fewer turns of the steering wheel from full left to full right and vice versa. Where the previous Navara required 4.1 turns lock-tolock, the new one only needs 3.4 turns. This has made the vehicle feel more responsive to steering inputs and easier to manoeuvre. With safety tech upgrades including a 360-degree camera system on the ST-X models, this new Navara is not just better at being a serious workhorse, it’s also a safer family hauler.

Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce When Alfa Romeo launched the high performance Giulia Quadrifoglio nearly two years ago, most enthusiasts were completely blindsided. You see, while Alfa Romeo is renowned for building some of the most gorgeous and soulful cars the world has ever known, it had never built a car to directly challenge the likes of the BMW M3 and Mercedes-AMG C 63. So the launch of the Giulia Quadrifoglio was preceded with cautious anticipation.

Horizons / October-November 2018

As it turned out, the Quadrifoglio not only challenged the German and English competition, it blew them away. However, at $143,900 the price of that car could also blow you away. Far more affordable is the Giulia Veloce, which has a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine in place of the Quadrifoglio’s ferocious twinturbo V6. Priced at $71,895 plus onroads, the Veloce looks just as beautiful as its high-priced sibling, but is half the price. Of course, the Veloce doesn’t have the same supercar-like performance of the Quadrifoglio but it’s no slug either.

The 2.0-litre engine in the Veloce makes 206kW of power and 400Nm of torque, and is more than enough for a spirited drive where conditions allow. For context, the Veloce weighs about the same as a Mazda6 GT, but has an extra 36kW. With a rear-drive platform which includes an eight-speed auto, a limitedslip differential and light but positive steering, the Veloce is an impressive sports saloon in its own right. Alfa’s DNA system manages three driving modes (Dynamic mode, Natural mode and All Weather mode) which can be selected depending on driving

conditions and the intent of the driver. The Giulia Veloce’s rivals in the premium medium sized car segment include the BMW 330i Sport Line, the Audi A4 2.0 Quattro and the Mercedes-Benz C 300. The Veloce comes well stacked with safety gear, including autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, eight airbags and two sets of ISOFIX anchor points in the back. While its interior fit and finish is still a notch behind its competitors, the Giulia range as a whole is an exciting and welcome addition to the premium mid-sized car segment.

Hyundai Santa Fe

monitoring and several other safety features which could one day save a life.

had been around since 2012, the new one is longer, wider and taller.

Late in the model life cycle of the previous Santa Fe, Hyundai joined the expanding throng of new vehicles that no longer make features an optional extra.

Among the Santa Fe’s new safety features is one that monitors the rear seats and alerts the driver if there are still rear passengers in the vehicle after the driver has parked the car.

The new Santa Fe range, launched in July 2018, has followed suit so critical active safety gear such as autonomous emergency braking is also not an option. Instead, it’s a standard feature.

The system is called Rear Occupant Alert and uses an ultrasonic sensor in the vehicle’s roof lining to detect movement in the rear seats. It’s a brilliant innovation that could reduce the tragedies resulting from children and pets being left in cars.

While the new Santa Fe’s styling isn’t as dramatic as its predecessor’s, what it gains is a far more premium appearance which makes it a lot easier to justify the range-topping Highlander’s $60,500 asking price.

So now, all new Santa Fe’s come with AEB, rear cross traffic alert, fatigue

54

Compared to the previous generation Santa Fe, which

Both the quality and the practicality of the interior are vastly improved over the previous model - enough to make the Santa Fe’s competitors nervous. There are soft, patterned inserts in the door trims and the second row seat occupants can adjust the

front seats. The second row seats can also be folded forward with no effort to allow almost “walk-in” access to the now roomier third row. Apple Carplay or Android Auto phone integration capability is another feature that not all of the Santa Fe’s competitors provide as standard. Prices are up across the range compared to the previous Santa Fe, though this is offset significantly by additions such as the safety gear plus wireless phone charging, LED headlights and Hyundai’s Auto Link system, which allows you to control certain functions of the car with your smart phone.

Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross An unexpected but welcome surprise is how we’d describe the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross small SUV. In fact, given the other offerings in the Mitsubishi SUV range, the Eclipse Cross is a total and muchneeded breath of fresh air. In the Mitsubishi SUV range, the five seat Eclipse Cross sits between the smaller ASX and the larger Outlander. This means its rivals would include the Kia Sportage, Nissan Qashqai and Hyundai Tucson. It has a small, but economical direct fuel injected 1.5-litre

Horizons / October-November 2018

turbo petrol engine, carries a five-star ANCAP safety rating and is stacked with other technology such as digital radio capability and Apple and Android smart phone integration. There are three variants in the Eclipse Cross range, comprising the LS two-wheel drive, the Exceed two-wheel drive and the Exceed all-wheel drive. The LS gets a range of active safety features as standard, including autonomous emergency braking and lane departure warning. Step up to the Exceed and you get active cruise control, blind spot warning and one of the most underrated safety features, rear cross traffic alert.

The Exceed also gets dualzone climate control, leather interior, power and heated front seats, LED headlamps and a sunroof. Apart from its drivetrain, the Exceed all-wheel drive has the same specification as the Exceed two-wheel drive. The Eclipse Cross’s styling is distinctive, but it’s befitting of the category – just look at the Toyota CH-R and Hyundai Kona. The interior has some gimmickry as well, particularly the touchpad which controls the infotainment system. We’d prefer a rotary dial. On the road, the Eclipse Cross drove well for an SUV, to the point where you

may even say it is sporty. Its handling is taut and responsive – exactly what buyers of a city-based SUV would expect. However, among our favourite aspects of the Eclipse Cross is the sprightly yet quiet and economical 1.5-litre turbocharged engine. It makes plenty of torque right where you need it in the rev range, and that makes a big difference in a small petrol vehicle, where buzzy engine noise can often prevail. Yes, the Eclipse Cross has a silly name. But it’s also clever, safe, fun to drive and a welcome young gun in the Mitsubishi SUV range.

I am told my Hyundai Santa Fe AWD SUV must have the same brand tyres on at all times because different makes of tyres even with the same rating may impart excess stress on the AWD system possibly resulting in premature wear of the differential and adjoining parts ultimately requiring replacement of the differential. How likely is this problem with other AWD SUVs? Where does a FWD fit into this tyre scenario? Zeke Pervan, Joondalup Provided the tyres are the correct specification for the vehicle, you do not need to have the same brand front and rear, though we recommend having the same brand and age of tyres across each axle. Using wheels and tyres which are different in diameter and width from those originally supplied with the vehicle may cause speedometer inaccuracies and some suspension issues over time. This also applies to front-wheel drive vehicles in a general sense. Get at least three different quotes for new tyres.

I have noticed at some fuel stations, particularly in WA country areas, there is ‘truck diesel’ as well as the normal diesel pumps. This applies to most of the major brands, BP, Caltex, Shell etc. It is sometimes easier to access the truck pumps, particularly towing and filling up with diesel. Is truck diesel exactly the same as the other diesel pumps or what are the differences? Richard, Duncraig Truck diesel is the same as regular diesel, however there is a very good reason for you to not use these pumps. Most pumps labelled as being for trucks are high-flow, meaning the nozzle is likely to be too wide to fit in your vehicle’s fuel filler neck. Secondly, as it has been designed to fill highcapacity truck tanks, the diesel will come out of the pump much more quickly than a pump designed for light vehicles. For both reasons we would recommend sticking to the regular pumps for light vehicles.

If your question is chosen for publication, please allow up to eight weeks for delivery. See page 81 for terms and conditions of entry.

While driving my car on cruise control, I monitored instantaneous fuel consumption. The engine was steady at 2000rpm. But the car fuel consumption varied from 3.6 litres per 100km to 7.8 litres per 100km. How reliable is instantaneous fuel consumption and average fuel consumption displayed by the car? Vishnu Kadekodi, Canning Vale While the information provided by your vehicle’s trip computer is always indicative, generally this information is reasonably reliable. However, the vehicle’s instantaneous fuel consumption will vary as the loads on the engine change. Even in cruise control, as the vehicle seeks to maintain speed as the road conditions change, it is likely you will see changes in instantaneous fuel consumption.

Seen your dipstick lately? Even if you’re someone with no idea about what’s going on under your car’s bonnet, there is one habit you should get into – pulling out the dipstick and checking your oil. Oil levels can run low in between services and because you run the risk of engine seizure if you run out, it’s recommended you check your oil at least once a month.

Horizons / October-November 2018

To check your oil:

 Make sure the car is on level ground and has been turned off for a few minutes so the oil has settled.

 Find the oil dipstick handle (it’s often a bright colour).

 Remove the dipstick and wipe it with a cloth or paper towel, then reinsert it fully again and remove it to check the level.

 The oil level should be somewhere between the two marks on the dipstick, preferably closer to the high mark. If your oil is low, you’ll need to top it up. Check your car’s manual for the correct grade of oil.

Remove the oil filler cap on the top of the engine and slowly add more oil, checking the level with the dipstick as you go. Having your oil changed during regular servicing will prolong the life of your engine. Premature engine wear due to lack of servicing and oil changes is one of the most common preventable repairs that RAC Auto Services technicians come across.

Which dog suits you best? Dogs are great companions, but they need to fit into your household. Before you choose a dog, think about your lifestyle and consider which breed would suit you best.

Tourism Western Australia

For fulltime workers who aren’t active, breeds such as Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Chihuahuas are a good fit. Family-friendly options include Golden Retrievers, Labradors or Cavoodles. If you’re an active type and have a good sized yard, working dogs such as Border Collies and Kelpies are great fun, love to be busy and are highly intelligent.

What to do after a burglary The shock of finding your home has been broken into can be difficult, both in the short and long term. Your first consideration is personal safety. If you arrive home to a find a break-in has occurred do not go inside or confront any intruders. Go to a neighbour’s property and call police. Reporting your break-in straight away increases the chances of the intruder being caught. Do not touch anything in your home until police have attended. They may be able to gather evidence including DNA or fingerprints.

60

Check your home and make a list of everything stolen or damaged. If credit or debit cards have been stolen contact your bank immediately. You should then contact your insurance company and have your police incident report number ready. They can take you through the claims process. It is important to let neighbours around you know that you’ve experienced a break-in.

Maltese/Shih Tzus and Poodles – either toy, miniature or standard Poodles – are a good choice for retirees or people at home fulltime. If you prefer a bigger dog, greyhounds are clean and, surprisingly, don’t require much exercise. Because your dog will become a special part of your family consider protecting them with pet cover. Even the hardiest of breeds aren’t immune from illness or injury. To find out more visit rac.com.au/petinsurance

If you experience any on-going emotional trauma following the event consider speaking with a professional. Finally, review your home security and take precautions to ensure it doesn’t happen again. Do this as soon as possible as repeat break-ins at the same property are not uncommon – often a burglar will return when they believe stolen items may have been replaced. CAN YOU HEAR BUT NOT

UNDERSTAND?

Virtually Undetectable

Are you ready to IMPROVE your hearing? You can have life changing results with your hearing loss if you have the correct hearing aid technology, the correct size and power of hearing aid for your individual hearing loss and it’s fitted and programmed correctly by our hearing aid Specialist with over 30 years clinical experience. Now starting at only Latest Technology Despite its miniature size, the computer inside the “Completely-In-Canal” hearing aid is so powerful it supports the most sophisticated advances in digital hearing aid technology to date. The microprocessor is so fast, that it samples the listening environment 20,000 times per second and makes automatic adjustments to the sound it delivers to your ear. Some models in the range are designed to identify non-speech noise and the steady hum of background noise then reduces those sounds while amplifying the speech directly in front of you, making conversations much clearer.

Are You Missing Too Much? Don’t let your hearing loss deprive you

of the things you enjoy most in life: the relationships with your friends, family and work colleagues. You can get help now without suffering the stigma of yesterday’s large unsightly hearing aids.

Hearing Loss Specialists Hearing Clinics Are offering complimentary hearing consultations to determine whether you are a candidate to wear this new hearing aid. We invite you to call today for an appointment. Your visit will include a hearing test (with a otoscopic examination), a personalised consultation to determine the correct level of technology and size of hearing aid that is required for your individual hearing loss.

We are a totally independent Hearing Aid Clinic, we are not owned by a hearing aid manufacturer. This allows us to prescribe the most advanced FREE type of technology and style of LIFETIME hearing aid for your individual Hearing Aid hearing loss; not just one brand. Adjustments, Trust the hearing aid specialist with 30+ years of clinical experience prescribing hearing aids in Western Australia.

hen Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree, he’s a truly wondrous sight. But when the King of the Bush joins forces with Peter Carl Fabergé, the King of Jewelled Treasures, the magic really begins! Now, you can enjoy both in the “King of the Bush Music Box”, an enchanting new Peter Carl Fabergé-inspired musical premiere, available only from The Bradford Exchange.

Centuries-old hand-crafting creates a modern masterpiece Skilled in the traditions of the great porcelain houses of Europe, our Master Artisans craft each edition by hand using only the finest Heirloom Porcelain®. The base showcases a charming pair of ‘kookas’ created by Joy Scherger, one of Australia’s most celebrated wildlife artists. Lavished all over with hand-applied 22-carat gold, the music box features more than 80 faux gems, each one set by hand in the Fabergé tradition. The egg opens to reveal a kookaburra sculpture, so realistic you can almost hear his laughter echo through the bush! The sculpt is painted entirely by hand, creating a treasure as rare and beautiful as one of Fabergé’s own masterpieces! Plays the melody of “Beautiful Dreamer” as a lovely finishing touch.

Exceptional Value. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Attractively priced at just two easy, interest-free instalments of $49.99, a total of $99.98, plus $9.99 postage and handling, the “King of the Bush Music Box” is also risk-free thanks to our world-famous 365-day money-back guarantee. Ghost towns Big Bell, Mid West This abandoned town had its heyday when the Big Bell gold mine was in operation. The impressive ruins of the Big Bell Hotel are unmissable – it was said to have the longest bar in Australia in its day. The town was established in 1936 alongside the mine, which closed just 20 years later. The ghost town site is a 15 minute drive from Cue. Tourism Western Australia

Broad Arrow, Goldfields Gold was first discovered here in 1893 and soon after it became yet another busy Goldfields town. As gold production fell, so too did the town’s population – it went from 2400 in 1900 to just 280 in 1911. Broad Arrow’s only surviving hotel, which is still operating, was made famous as the location for the 1971 film The Nickel Queen.

Central Greenough, Mid West See just how hard life could be for our early agricultural settlers at Central Greenough. During the 1860s the area was thriving but droughts, flood and diseased crops saw farming decline and the population drop dramatically through the early 1900s. The remaining historic buildings are now managed by the National Trust.

Cossack, Pilbara You’ll find some of the oldest buildings in WA among the carefully maintained remnants of this early settlement. Once the North West’s main shipping port it was originally named Tien Tsin after the boat that carried the first settlers to the area. The Cossack Heritage Trail takes you past key historical sites.

Goongarrie, Goldfields After Coolgardie, Goongarrie was the second most important gold find in this region at the time. Gold was found

82

Gwalia, Goldfields

there in 1893, but as with many gold towns, Goongarrie faded into obscurity after the mine failed. Today you can visit three historic railway cottages that remain in the old town site.

Gwalia, Goldfields The Sons of Gwalia gold mine lease was registered in 1896 and its first manager was engineer Herbert Hoover who went on to be the 31st President of the United States. The mine closed in 1963 causing a mass exodus of workers from the town. Today the abandoned homes and businesses provide a window into a bygone era.

Israelite Bay, Esperance region Located in a scenic coastal region about 200km east of Esperance, this heritage site contains the ruins of the National Trust-classified post office and telegraph station as well as graves, an old cottage and a fishing shack. For a time, the telegraph station was a vital part of the national communications infrastructure. The original structure was made of wood and built in 1876.

Kookynie, Goldfields In the early 1900s Kookynie was a busy and prosperous mining centre, boasting banks, hotels, train services and the region’s first public swimming pool. Today it is a living ghost town with a handful of residents still there and one original hotel – the Grand Hotel – still trading.

Kunanalling, Goldfields Every town needs a pub, even a ghost town. Today, the ruins of the Premier Hotel are one of the few visible reminders of the old gold mining town of Kunanalling. Located about 30km north west of Coolgardie, Kunanalling was established in the late 1800s following a gold claim in the area.

Shay Gap, Pilbara Built by Mount Goldsworthy Mining, Shay Gap is nestled between rugged ranges 188km east of Port Hedland. Once home to almost 1000 people, this iron ore mining town was established in the early 1970s and disassembled in the 1990s. The town has completely disappeared, leaving only traces behind.
