President’s message New and improved parks and resorts for RAC members Over the past 12 months RAC has significantly expanded our tourism offerings and made it easier for members to plan their next getaway. In December 2018 we announced the acquisition of Palm Grove Holiday Resort, which has been renamed RAC Cable Beach Holiday Park to promote its unique location. Just a short five‐minute walk from iconic Cable Beach in Broome, the Park offers self‐contained family cabins, powered caravan sites and camping grounds. It promises an unforgettable beach holiday experience. With the addition of RAC Cable Beach Holiday Park, RAC now offers our members access to eight destinations across Western Australia.
RAC Parks and Resorts AC Busselton Holiday Park R RAC Cable Beach Holiday Park RAC Cervantes Holiday Park RAC Exmouth Cape Holiday Park RAC Karri Valley Resort RAC Margaret River Nature Park RAC Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort Ningaloo Reef Resort
As well as acquiring new locations, we have placed great focus on ensuring our existing parks and resorts offer RAC members the best experience possible. In November, the Premier of Western Australia, the Hon Mark McGowan MLA, joined RAC to officially unveil the new and improved RAC Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort, following a $20 million redevelopment which almost doubled

the capacity of the world-class venue. RAC also invested over $300,000 into the Shark Bay Airport, including widening and sealing of the runway. RAC’s investment is part of a $620,000 funding package in partnership with the State Government through the Regional Airports Development Scheme. We’ve also been working hard to improve the guest experience at RAC Karri Valley Resort while preserving the heritage of this unique WA destination. Our aim is to make it safe and enjoyable to move around the State and our parks and resorts are designed to encourage Western Australians to holiday in their own backyard. A big focus is ensuring we offer value for money experiences and options to make it easier for our members. We were incredibly proud to have these efforts highlighted last year, with RAC Cervantes Holiday Park winning a gold medal at the WA Tourism Awards for the second consecutive year. In 2019, RAC provides a wide array of products, services and benefits designed to meet the diverse needs of Western Australians. As a mutual organisation, we will continue to evolve to ensure we deliver the best possible outcomes for our one million members.

Towing the line The maximum speed for towing vehicles anywhere in Western Australia is limited to 100km/h (and lower for heavy vehicles). There are signs on major roads stating the speed limits for the various vehicle combinations. I am continually amazed at the number of cars towing trailers or small caravans, that are travelling well in excess of the prescribed limit, and even exceeding the 110km/h limit. Some drivers are also not aware of the towing capacity and ball weight limitations of their vehicle when towing, and I am sure that some of the combinations that I have seen would be well over the limit for that vehicle. Bruce Zilm See our guide to reversing a caravan on page 18.

Remembering stormy days Your article “High pressure staying ahead of WA’s weather” (Horizons February/March) reminded us down here in WA’s deep dark south of a mini tornado which passed through the Cranbrook and Plantagenet shires in August 2018. While we didn’t see the tornado, we did see where it had been. Large trees were uprooted, and others stripped of branches and leaves. Roads were left impassable and fences destroyed. Bill Mengler

Crash map We shared our map of fatal road crashes in WA on Facebook. Knowing people [who have been] affected by fatal crashes, I know some of what they go through. It’s not surprising given the care factor I see every day and the many people that can make cars move but can’t actually drive. Not all crashes are a result of speeding, complacency or inattention but they are amongst the most avoidable if people are sensible drivers. Claas Scholz It’s one of those things you try not to think about. But you know a certain amount of people are going to die on our roads. Most times through no fault of their own. Maxine Merrifield
Dog rescue Due to a malfunction in my new Hyundai Tucson, the car door locked itself after I buckled my dog in the back seat. My keys, phone and wallet were all locked inside. While my husband was hosing the car down, I rang RAC and the lady on the phone was so professional and quick at making a decision to dispatch and reroute Jeremy (from RAC). My poor Samoyed would have died of heatstroke if not for RAC. Jeremy arrived and unlocked my car and saved my pup all in just under 16 mins - including the phone call. Mitthi Harshal
From Hooves to Highways We’ve partnered with the Museum of Perth for the exhibition, ‘From Hooves to Highways’ which takes you back to when cars were a novelty in WA. Awesome photo. It’s really hard to believe how rapidly the world has evolved with technology and the standard of living in really such a short period of time. The people in this photo could have never imagined what has been achieved now. Nicole King To find out more about the exhibition, see page 60.

News in brief from the RAC and beyond
What’s one of the most recyclable products? Although we hear a lot about paper, aluminium cans and glass recycling, surprisingly, one of the world’s most recyclable consumer products is the lead-acid battery in your car – 100 per cent of it can be recycled. In Australia, the recycling rate for automotive batteries is around 95 per cent. Approximately 85 per cent of the lead in a used lead-acid battery can be extracted for use in new leadacid batteries. The remainder is used in products such as radiation shields for medical facilities and roofing products for the construction industry. Even the battery’s plastic casings can be recycled.
12
RAC currently recycles more than 60,000 batteries each year, with batteries that are replaced by RAC’s mobile battery service or by RAC Auto Services passed on to a licenced recycling facility in WA. If you have old lead-acid batteries around your home, you can drop them into any RAC Auto Services Centre to be passed on for recycling.
Four things you should never do with lead-acid batteries void touching a lead-acid A battery with your bare hands – always wear gloves atteries contain toxic B compounds, so never dismantle any part of a battery yourself ever put your lead-acid N car battery into your waste bin or recycling bin at home eep all lead-acid batteries K away from flames, sparks and any ignition sources

Our cars are becoming too complicated
Not all spare tyres are equal Car manufacturers often equip new cars with alternatives to a full-size spare tyre which are generally only designed to travel short distances. If you do a lot of long distance trips, it’s important to be aware of the kind of spare you have, should you get a flat in the middle of a road trip. When you buy your car ask, as not all alternatives to full-size tyres can deal with long trips. Many modern vehicles now come with a space-saver tyre as the spare, which is smaller than the standard tyres fitted to the vehicle. Some vehicles have four ‘run-flat’ tyres and no spare at all. Run-flat tyres have a stiff rubber sidewall that allows them to be driven limited distances while the tyre is deflated. Other vehicles may only be equipped with a tyre inflator kit that can temporarily repair small punctures. Generally, inflator
kits can’t be used with larger punctures or where there is more significant tyre damage. None of these alternatives to full-size spare tyres can travel long distances and are only a temporary fix to get you to a location where the damaged tyre can be repaired or replaced. A space-saver tyre, a deflated run-flat tyre and repairs made with inflator kits will also limit the speed at which a car can travel. If you’re planning an Easter road trip and you’ve never checked your spare, take a look before you leave so you know what you are up for in the event of a flat. It’s also a good idea to check that your spare tyre is in serviceable condition and inflated to the correct pressure.
The increasing complexity of car technology prevents drivers from understanding their vehicles, according to 90 per cent of RAC Roadside Assistance Patrols. Our Patrols were surveyed about what they see on WA roads and on callouts. One of the most common observations made was that cars were becoming more technically complicated so many motorists were reluctant to care for the vehicle themselves. As a result, there was a high volume of Patrol call-outs for basic maintenance. Almost 70 per cent of Patrols surveyed increasingly attended call-outs to find the motorist had misinterpreted a warning light and assumed their vehicle was unsafe to drive. More than half of the Patrols surveyed had noticed an increase in the number of call-outs for a remote locking system which had locked the driver out of their own car. In addition, 85 per cent said they had experienced a near miss on the road while helping a stranded motorist.

Our driver distraction survey We asked West Australian drivers to share their thoughts and observations about mobile phone use behind the wheel. More than 9 in 10 said they considered holding and using a phone while driving extremely or very risky. Yet, eight in ten said they continued to use their mobile phone while driving, with 37 per cent doing so regularly. Our 2018 survey results suggest that drivers are well aware of the risks of using a mobile phone while driving and now need to make the choice to ditch the distraction and put away the phone when they’re on the road.
The survey revealed:

31% said they were heavily reliant on their mobile phones, saying they considered their phone to be essential to their daily lives.
14
said they had tried strategies to prevent mobile phone use while driving, including leaving their phone in their bag or switching it off.
7 in 10 said they were less likely to use their phone while driving with their parents or friends in the car.
34% had illegally touched their phone while driving in the previous month.
40% admitted to texting (reading or typing a text message) while driving.
77% believed they were likely to be caught and penalised if they were to hold and use a mobile phone while driving.

Federal priorities for WA In 2018, WA had the worst road fatality rate of any mainland state in Australia — 33 per cent higher than the national average and 84 per cent higher than Victoria. Perth is also on its way to becoming the most congested capital city in the country, with Infrastructure Australia predicting that in less than 12 years, seven of the 10 most congested roads in the country will be in Perth, including the top four. To manage these challenges, we need investment in safer and more efficient roads and an effective and integrated public transport system.
Missing out on billions Over the past 13 years, for every dollar of motoring taxation collected by successive Federal Governments, WA has received an average of just 34 cents toward road and transport projects. By 2021-22, this number is forecast to drop to a low of just 17 cents in the dollar. Billions are being paid by WA motorists through taxes like fuel excise, yet our State continues to not receive its fair share of federal transport funding.
Federal priorities for WA RAC’s Federal Priorities for WA include strategically important road safety and transport projects critical to our State’s future. Here’s a snapshot For the full report, visit rac.com.au/advocacy
Horizons / April-May 2019
Rating and improving the safety of roads Urgent funding for improvements to WA roads is needed, including through the Federal Black Spot Program, the Regional Road Safety Program and the Safer Roads Investment Plan for the WA National Highway Network. A rolling program to rate the safety of high volume regional roads is also essential. Albany Ring Road Completion of the Albany Ring Road will deliver important safety and efficiency benefits by reducing the number of heavy vehicles mixing with local and tourist traffic along Albany Highway, South Coast Highway, South Western Highway, and through the city. Grade separations A rolling program of grade separations on WA’s major highways as well as level crossing removals across Perth’s passenger rail network is critical to addressing ongoing safety and congestion issues. Automated and connected vehicles WA must prepare for a future of automated and connected vehicles to capitalise on advancements in technology and future-proof new infrastructure. Smart transport solutions The development and implementation of Intelligent Transport System solutions will enhance the efficiency and safety of the State’s transport system. Rail for Perth’s northern corridor With funding already committed for heavy rail connections to Ellenbrook and the north east suburbs, now is the time to ensure greatly enhanced connectivity between Perth CBD and Morley. Perth Light Rail Investment in light rail will be transformational for Perth, complementing our existing transport modes to increase access to and through the central area and to strategically important centres. Cycling infrastructure projects Investment in Perth’s Principal Shared Path network and green bridges will deliver safety, health and productivity benefits for the community of Western Australia.

HOW TO REVERSE A CARAVAN It takes quite a bit of practice to get this tricky manoeuvre right.
Right-hand turns with a caravan are generally easier to manage than left-hand turns as you have a wider field of vision.
When reversing a caravan or any trailer, the first rule of thumb is to remember that opposites rule.
If you oversteer in one direction, or the caravan begins to turn in a circle, stop and move forward in a straight line until the caravan has straightened up completely behind your car.
To move the caravan to the right you need to turn the steering wheel gradually to the left. To turn the caravan left, do the opposite - turn the steering wheel to the right.
It can help to identify or mark particular points on the caravan, so you know when it’s aligned with your vehicle.
Here are four steps to help you smoothly reverse into a caravan park bay:
BAY
Step 1 From the right top corner of the bay, take two steps forward and four steps to the right. This is the point where you need to start reversing.
BAY
Step 2 Holding from the bottom, turn the steering wheel all the way to the left (anti-clockwise). Then bring it back half a turn. Now begin reversing. Aim for the right-hand corner of the bay.

PEOPLE PEDALS & PATHS Cycling means many things to many people in Perth, and lycra has little to do with it. As the city’s cycling networks significantly expand, we speak to those who ride for fun, family, transport and adventure. By Fleur Bainger

My bike is bright yellow and made from a mishmash of parts my husband acquired from the side of the road, including the padded white seat and the painted wooden box at the back. But it is a step up from my old bike: this one has gears. I love it to bits. It’s been my key mode of transport for seven years now, and some days I wonder why I didn’t start riding sooner. You see, I’ve done my own little calculations and experiments, and guess what? It takes the same time for me to ride into the city as it does to drive, if you include time spent parking the car. Removing that expensive frustration from the equation is wonderfully satisfying. Biking is also my answer to limited exercise time as I juggle a busy working life with two little kids. I’m not the only one enjoying life on two wheels. Some 42 per cent of West Australians cycle, compared to the national average of 34 per cent. The Narrows Bridge along Kwinana Freeway is one of Perth’s busiest cycling routes, with 2100 daily rides in the past financial year. The Riverside Drive Recreational Shared Path, South Perth Esplanade, Mounts Bay Road and the Perth-Midland Railway Line path also see their fair share of twowheeled traffic.
“There’s a huge cycling culture in Perth. On a Saturday I could see at least 100 cyclists on the road. It’s the new golf.”

“It’s pretty special,” she says. Woolmer was recently recognised by the Department of Transport for championing cycling and encouraging more women to get involved. “I love the quieter routes but, like many women, don’t feel comfortable riding them by myself,” she says. “Riding with others is more pleasant - you don’t feel as vulnerable and you end up riding much further than you would by yourself.” In Leederville, Stewart Watkins has been riding with his boys, Chris, aged 12 and Ben, 14 years, for the past six years. While the X-Box is now starting to compete with their biking trips, he says it’s been a brilliant family activity since the kids first started learning with trainer wheels. “It’s how we relax and spend time together,” he says. “Things happen at a slower pace.” Watkins and his partner, Nanette Hattingh – who own seven bikes between them – flank the boys when they’re on the roads, with one of them

carrying a picnic basket and the other towing their pet beagle, Bob, in a trailer at the back. They’ve spent years teaching the boys how to be road-smart. “It can be a bit nerve wracking at times,” says Watkins. “One time, when the bike path ran out and we were riding on Curtin Avenue, there were yobbos yelling at us to get on the footpath. The kids learned all sorts of words. But they’ve learned to ride properly with cars and understand that you need to be on the ball.” For Hillarys cyclist Ayman Haydar, fitness, distance and speed are the drawcards. Having taken up cycling seven years ago, he’s now fully kitted out with a wardrobe of lycra and last year, he clocked up more than 14,000km on his high-performance bicycle. “I used to volunteer to help with the lunches for the Ride for Sick Kids WA, which fundraises for Ronald McDonald House,” he says. “Then one year I did the 500km charity ride and I loved it, so I took up cycling.” For the 50-year-old, riding is a sweet addiction. “It’s that freedom, the wind in your face, you’re pushing yourself, you want to improve your speeds,” he says. “When I started, I was lucky to average 26km/h. My fitness has improved greatly since then.”

Lighting up Perth’s cycle network Cycling doesn’t just happen when the sun’s up. Our shared paths need to be well lit to ensure we feel safe and comfortable to use them, day or night. A recent review commissioned by RAC showed that nearly 60 per cent of lighting along 67km of Perth’s most popular shared paths doesn’t meet minimum lighting standards. The study measured lighting quality along four popular routes, including principal shared paths along the Kwinana and Mitchell freeways and the Recreational Shared Paths along Mounts Bay Road and the Swan River. The lighting levels varied along each of the paths, but the Kwinana Freeway topped the list with 77 per cent of the 25km surveyed being noncompliant. The Mounts Bay Road path showed the best results with only 12 per cent non-compliance. The study identified opportunities to improve safety along Perth’s shared paths. Simple changes include cleaning or replacing globes and trimming trees, along with trialling new technologies such as dynamic lighting. Importantly, the study highlights the need for increased funding to enable ongoing maintenance and upgrades of existing infrastructure, to complement investment in expanding the network.

The Perth households trading energy with each other By Cristy Burne For 40 residents in Fremantle, that’s exactly what they’ve been doing as part of a peer-to-peer energy trading trial that is being lauded as a world first. The $8.2 million RENeW Nexus project aims to test the feasibility of allowing consumers to become active players in the energy market, letting the householder control their own power supply, including who they buy it from and sell it to.
The RENeW Nexus project, which is also looking at water treatment options and community battery storage, has an impressive list of partners including Curtin University, the City of Fremantle, Synergy, Western Power, energyOS, and WA software company Power Ledger – who provide the technology to exchange the power and manage the transactions.

What if you could sell the extra energy produced by your rooftop solar panels to someone down the road? Or buy your neighbour’s excess solar energy instead of relying solely on the grid?
26
April-May 2019 / Horizons
O U R S TAT E
Melina Mellino and her partner Vince Radford, who have a 6.5 kW solar array on their rooftop, are taking part. Describing themselves as passionate about sustainability, Mellino says that as well as selling around 20kWh of solar power to the grid each day, using a smart meter to track and graph their power use means they now understand how they use power. “People warned us our induction cooktop was going to consume a lot of power,” she says, “but after having monitored it, we were able to see it doesn’t actually draw that much power.” The couple also noticed an unpleasant peak in power use from showering. They tracked the problem to a malfunctioning water pump, fixed the pump, and cut their power bill in the process. BELOW: Melina Mellino.
“I really believe [peer-to-peer trading] is the way forward,” says Mellino. “It’s empowering to be able to pass our excess power to people who don’t produce their own.”
If you need more than you make, you buy it direct from Synergy.
How it works
If you don’t have solar, you can buy your neighbour’s excess energy for a price below what you would otherwise pay Synergy.
The 40 trial participants use Western Power’s existing grid, with Synergy as the retailer, to buy and sell solar energy directly with each other via Power Ledger’s blockchain energy trading software.
It’s a future energy model that Power Ledger managing director David Martin has been working towards for some time now, with this trial one of several peer-to-peer trading projects they are currently involved in.
Participants set their own energy prices by simply logging on to a portal. If you’re producing excess solar energy, you can sell it to your neighbour for a higher rate than Synergy would pay you. Any power that isn’t sold direct to others in the trial is imported by Synergy for the feed-in tariff rate.
“It’s empowering to be able to pass our excess power to people who don’t produce their own.” “We’re creating a real-time transaction between people with excess solar energy, and people who are consuming energy at the same time and don’t have any solar,” says Martin. “If we can encourage people to stay connected to the grid, we can give them an opportunity to monetise their investment in PV [solar panels], and that value is retained in their community because their neighbours are getting access to low cost and zero carbon energy,” says Martin. “We start from an economic perspective, but when you talk to consumers, they’re really excited that their solar energy is being used in their community.”
No solar panels? No worries Phil Morellini doesn’t have solar on his rooftop.
Stewart Allen
He joined the trial for the chance to access solar power and to save money. Using the trial’s online portal, Morellini enters the price he’s willing to pay to import a unit of solar energy. The software does the rest.
Horizons / April-May 2019
“I could change what I’m willing to pay at any time, but I’m more of a set-andforget person,” he says. “As long as I’m making savings and it’s a fair price, then I’m happy. At the moment I’m buying peak power at 6.5 cents

How does the power trading system work? Managing the many thousands of micro-transactions involved in peer-topeer energy trading is no mean feat. Power Ledger’s software can analyse how much excess power is available at any instant, account for the price each participant is willing to buy or sell for at that time, then determine the most efficient way to trade the power available. It also tracks the trades as they happen using blockchain technology. Unlike a centralised record-keeping system, blockchain-enabled ledgers are decentralised. This means market transactions are recorded across multiple locations at the same time, creating multiple copies and offering protection from targeted cyber-attacks. To streamline the non-stop back-andforth trading of fractional energy units and the cash value they represent, Power Ledger also invented an artificial unit called Sparkz.

per unit, and from Synergy it’s about 9.9 cents per unit.”
a say in how much he pays for electricity.
Morellini hopes these savings will offset the costs of being part of the trial. “We had to pay $3.30 per day to be on the project. That does bump the costs up, but providing I’m making a good enough saving on what I pay for my electricity, my bills will be less than before.”
“It gives you better control over what kind of bill you’re going to get at the end of the day.
Smart-meter thinking Morellini also found the smart meter useful in cost cutting. “You can consider when you’re going to wash your clothes, when you’re going to put your dishwasher on. It gives you a sense of empowerment over how you use your electricity.” He also likes being able to have
28
“Ultimately, if a project like this gets off the ground, it’s a viable option for everyone to use green energy and not solely rely on the big electricity companies to have their energy needs met.” So when will a peer-to-peer trading trial come to your home? When you let people know you want it, says Martin. “The more people talk about peer-to-peer trading, the more our policymakers will realise that there is another lens through which to look at this energy issue.”
“In Australia, a Spark is worth one cent,” explains Martin. “If you and I agree that I’m going to buy 15 cents of your excess energy, then when that energy is traded, 15 Sparkz go from my wallet to yours.” “Sometimes your solar panels will be pumping out a lot of energy and Sparkz are coming into your wallet,” says Martin. “Then all your kids will come home and all of a sudden you’re buying someone else’s energy, and Sparkz are coming out of your wallet.” In a larger peer-to-peer trading environment, you could choose to cash in your Sparkz at any time, or to prepurchase Sparkz in bulk, all in a single financial transaction. For the purposes of the RENeW Nexus trial, all billing has been integrated into the households’ regular Synergy bills.

By day, a steady trickle of cars and buses pull into the quiet but functional East Street jetty carpark in East Fremantle, the departure point for Rotto ferries, party boats and river cruises. But on Monday nights in summer, the carpark fills up with chairs and tables, food trucks and hungry locals, who come to eat, talk, listen to music and take in the riverside serenity. Come morning, as the ferry goers arrive for their pick-up, there’s no sign the nocturnal diners were ever there.
The emphasis is on creating a usable public space where people want to linger and congregate. Similar events are happening all over Perth in areas that may otherwise be vacant or underused. Car parks, road verges and even intersections are being re-thought and re-engineered to become temporary or even permanent vibrant community hubs. It’s a lot more than just food trucks. There are pop-up bike lanes and “parklets”, public artworks and murals, community veggie patches and popup car-free zones, outdoor movies and
reading areas. Sometimes the spaces created are temporary while at other locations the change is permanent. This organic urban renaissance that is rethinking the way we use communal space is part of a world-wide trend called tactical urbanism that’s been gathering steam for a decade. “The way we design space is often antipeople. It is often designed to minimise maintenance and minimise the amount of people who use that space,” says Dean Cracknell, CEO of non-profit Town Team Movement based in Mt Hawthorn, that promotes community place-making in Australia and NZ. “Tactical urbanism is about getting people connecting with each other and connecting with the spaces around them. “It’s not so much a project or a program, it’s more a way of doing things,” Cracknell says. The emphasis is on creating a usable public space where people want to linger and congregate. Creating that space could be as simple as rolling out some green carpet and adding some planter boxes and chairs to

create a lovely place to sit, he says. Although projects might get micro funding, tactical urbanism is more about creative thinking and ingenuity than large cash flows. “It can be cheap and simple. It’s about doing simple things to improve a space rather than waiting years for massive projects that may or may not ever get built,” Cracknell says. “Even putting a pot plant outside your shop or a funny sign to brighten someone’s day are examples of tactical urbanism.”
Perth’s liveability on the up Cracknell believes Perth is leading the nation in the adoption of tactical urbanism techniques. It’s been driven by active residents and community groups, from locals who love where they live, through to enthusiasts like guerrilla gardeners who quietly grow edible plants in parks and on verges, or yarn bombers, who a few years back began dressing up trees and landmarks with colourful crocheted or knitted ‘outfits’. Perth’s councils are embracing the tactical urbanism concept, and making it easier. They’re cutting the red tape and providing micro funding to community groups to make projects happen and turn neglected spaces into places where people want to hang out. In Victoria Park, more than 400 locals are part of the Vic Park Collective which creates interesting spaces and events for its local community to connect, like its Car Free Day event which turned a section of Kent Street into a ‘play zone’ for locals. (See the box for more details). In an area already well known for its beautiful gardens and lawns and with an active community of guerrilla gardeners, Bayswater Council tore up its rule book on verge plantings and actively encouraged residents to set up verge gardens and street tree swings. In the more densely populated South Perth, the community organised a pop-up cinema last year by hiring a mobile screen and encouraging people to bring their own beanbags.

In the east-end of Perth, the Historic Heart of Perth project has added depth and colour to the experience of walking from the city to the new stadium. Local artists designed new artwork for planter boxes throughout the streets, revitalising the cityscape with a burst of colour.

On Monday nights in Inglewood, Beaufort Street is filled with food vendors, tables, chairs and buskers, as the locals take the night off from cooking and head out to the Inglewood Night Markets. permits one Sunday afternoon each month, when the local kids are encouraged to safely play on the car-free streets.
Love where we live As well as fostering community as people come together to work on local projects, tactical urbanism is about shifting us away from our car-centric view of planning.
For Cracknell, it’s the perfect example of tactical urbanism, changing the feel and use of public spaces to something that enriches both the community and those using the space.
Pop-up bike lanes and temporary street closures encourage cycling and walking, making our streets more people-centred.
“It’s come from the local people, it’s been made by local people and it’s been cared for by local people rather than the council doing it,” he says.
New York’s Times Square is a great example, says Cracknell, of where tactical urbanism has been institutionalised with walking and activity areas, in part to address
“As cities change and get denser we need to think about each space and how it could be used for multiple purposes or benefits rather than everything being segregated.”
When Dave Lindner from the Vic Park Collective told Kent Street residents part of their street would be blocked to cars for a day, the response was overwhelming. “They were 100 per cent supportive,” Linder says. The first of Vic Park’s Car Free Days was in September 2016 and drew around 500 locals to a closed section of Kent street to enjoy entertainment, to share some food and to just lounge around and get to know each other. “It was a personal interest of mine in wanting to reclaim the streets, Horizons / April-May 2019
To give the colourful project further longevity, the community brought in a social enterprise that employs longterm unemployed people to look after the planter boxes and the plants.

Over in the sprawling City of Melville, the council has funded communitydriven projects, including the nature playground Webber Park in Willagee devised and developed by a close-knit local community group.
The community then designed an app to provide the history of the area and details about the artworks for those strolling the streets.

to demonstrate to people that the streets are public spaces and that you don’t have to own a vehicle to use them,” Linder says. With support and funding from the Council to manage the road closure, the rest was taken care of with
donations from local residents and businesses. And the community is keen to keep the momentum going. “We did surveys both on the car free days and afterwards via doorknocking as well. Everyone would like to see it again.”

So often the focus of a road trip is on the land. But imagine if you could do the Coral Coast trip under the water? Western Australia’s Coral Coast stretches from Cervantes to Exmouth and includes the World Heritage listed Shark Bay Marine Park and Ningaloo Marine Park with its crystal blue waters. Underwater is a veritable fantasy land of seagrass beds and coral reefs, home to mysterious whale sharks, friendly dolphins, humpback whales, dugongs and graceful manta rays. It’s not surprising these watery paradises attract holidaymakers and scientists alike. Visiting is like living a David Attenborough nature documentary with something on offer all year round.
In the swim with whale sharks Last year a record 32,054 people travelled to Ningaloo to swim with whale sharks – the ocean’s gentle giants, in the only place in Australia
where it is possible for such an encounter. Whale sharks begin arriving in March and take up residence until about August when they again disappear to the ocean’s deep and a little understood other life. “Whale sharks are quite mysterious, but they are also quite beautiful,” says WA scientist Brad Norman who has been studying them at Ningaloo for 24 years and is the lead scientist with conservation group Ecocean. “They’re a shark and have a classic shark shape, but they’re a gentle shark. You’re in awe when you swim alongside the biggest fish in the sea. I catch my breath every time I jump in the water and I’ve jumped in thousands of times with whale sharks.” Whale sharks can grow up to 18 metres long, can live for up to 80 years and
are good at keeping to themselves. Until the mid-1980s there had only been about 320 confirmed sightings of the animals globally. Norman developed a photo identification system that is now used internationally, alongside satellite tracking and whale shark ‘fitbits’ to track the animals in the hope of unravelling their secrets. “Whale sharks can dive down to thousands of metres and stay deep for months at a time,” says Norman. “They can travel thousands of kilometres, so they aren’t the easiest animal to study, but along the WA coast is certainly one of the best places in the world to study and swim with them.” Licensed tour operators take small groups swimming with the whale sharks out of Coral Bay from March to late June and from Exmouth, March to August, with the season dependent on the comings and goings of the whale sharks. Tours range from $280 to $550 per adult a day. Check for season dates with australiascoralcoast.com

Humpback heaven Scientists estimate at least 30,000 humpback whales — the highest density in the Southern Hemisphere — visit the Ningaloo Coast each year as they migrate between Antarctica and their feeding and breeding grounds along the WA coast up to the Kimberley.
Underwater is a veritable fantasy land of seagrass beds and coral reefs. Now you can get in the water and take a closer look at these majestic creatures yourself through licensed Ningaloo tours, with snorkelers allowed within 30 metres. WA is one of only a handful of places around the country and the world where you can do this. The humpbacks also put on a spectacular show in Shark Bay, particularly around August to October as they head south. “You won’t see them so much from Monkey Mia or Denham because

the water is too shallow,” says Steve Nicholson, the Shark Bay district manager from the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions (DBCA). “You have to get further out in a boat around Dirk Hartog Island where the water is a bit deeper. “They don’t seem to be in a rush. There’s lots of leaping out of the water. They’re not just swimming, they’re actively jumping out of the water and expending lots of energy.” Licensed tours to swim with the whales run from July to September from Coral Bay and August to October from Exmouth, starting from $325 per adult, or watch from the boat for about $225.
Take a bath with a manta The ocean is full of surprises and watching a manta ray take a bath is right up there. How? They rub up against the coral and use it like a loofah, says Suzanne Fisher from Australia’s Coral Coast (ACC). “The manta rays are really extraordi-
nary,” says Fisher. “The unique thing about them is although fish usually swim in a line, manta rays don’t. They often swim in circles so you’ll have them barrel roll and dance around you.” At Ningaloo you can take a tour to swim alongside the mantas. “The operators generally take you to the manta ray cleaning stations, so you’ll see them slowly cleaning themselves. Watching them feed, clean or dance around is really beautiful,” says Fisher. Also look out for manta rays in the Shark Bay Marine Park. “There are often big congregations of them,” says DBCA’s Nicholson. “At Herald Bight up on the eastern side of the Peron Peninsula you quite often see massive congregations of them or eagle rays - hundreds in one group. It’s spectacular.” Tours run out of Coral Bay all year round and cost from $170 per adult for about six hours, half days for less, according to ACC.

Famous dolphins, elusive dugongs

About 100,000 people a year visit Shark Bay Marine Park where bottlenose dolphins come into Monkey Mia each morning to be fed.
“Some of the provisioned dolphins will chase fish up and down the bay all day,” says Mann. “It’s fantastic for people to watch because they can literally stand on the beach and see dolphins chasing fish.
The tradition of feeding them, now called provisioning, began in the 1960s when fishermen began sharing their catch. Steve Nicholson says the dolphins are handfed 10 per cent of their daily diet so they still must hunt. He says although only five of the Park’s thousands of dolphins are given fish, more visit daily. “Sometimes you might get 10 or 15 dolphins,” says Nicholson. “Even the ones who aren’t fed still come in and I think it’s because they seem to like that interaction with human beings.” Professor Janet Mann, of Georgetown University in Washington, is part of the Shark Bay Dolphin Project which has tracked nearly 1800 dolphins in the area from birth to death and contributed much of what is known about the social structure of bottlenose society. Mann says the area’s dolphins are unique in the way they drive out fish from the sea floor and use sponges
42
“But if you are in the water, stay still. People want to swim with them and they don’t realise these dolphins don’t really swim with you. If they are swimming along it’s because they are chasing something.” Entry to Monkey Mia Marine Reserve is $15 per adult a day, $5 for children and there are family, concession rates and extended holiday rates available. Shark Bay’s shyer residents, its population of 11,000 dugongs, or sea cows, like to graze along the ocean bottom in the seagrass beds that are special to the Shark Bay World Heritage area. Nicholson says you may come across one by chance. “I go paddling out the front of Denham into the marine park and quite often see a dugong,” he says. “I’ve paddled off Monkey Mia, and the same thing there.”
the daily tours out to the where the dugongs loll about, diving down to eat and resurfacing to show their thick hides in the sun. Tours out of Monkey Mia and Denham also look for dolphins, turtles and rays. They vary in price but cost about $100 for three hours for adults. Prime dugong time is August to October.

We were gobsmacked by our hearing aid experiences
Susy and Roger are former wheat and sheep farmers from Narembeen. Roger was subjected to a lot of noise working on the farm but he didn’t notice he had hearing loss. He felt it was Susy who was always saying “Pardon”, never hearing anything. “When Susy decided to have a hearing appointment, I booked in for a test too and that’s when I found out about my terrible hearing,” said Roger. According to Susy, the catalyst for having the test was her Sister telling her how often she needed to repeat herself. “It was difficult for me to understand what was being said and I was always a few seconds behind the conversation. My brain was stressed just paying attention, trying to work out what was said and processing the information before I could respond. It’s very tiring. “My hearing loss is likely familial because I have had hearing problems for at least ten years. And of course I went dancing in Perth where the music was absolutely booming. “In my last job working with educationally disengaged teenagers, (kids who don’t tend to face you when they are speaking and who don’t articulate clearly), I thought it was
just their mode of communication that was responsible for my inability to hear them. In the classroom setting too, I found it quite difficult to cope with what was being said,” said Susy. “My hearing aids have been a big hit at home, with lots of jokes about how nobody can talk behind my back now. And where I used to have trouble hearing in cafes, my son was delighted when I had my back to him in a café and I turned around and responded to him. This was a real milestone,” Susy said. I no longer feel like a doddery old person, and I’m really participating fully in life. “With our hearing aid fittings, Roger and I were utterly gobsmacked with our immediate positive experiences. We hear clearer now. I wish I had done this while I was working. My experience with my Father-In-Law’s hearing aids wasn’t good but coming to Brad Hutchinson Hearing has changed our lives because of the professionalism that’s clearly on show. Our advice to anyone with hearing loss is - don’t put it off any longer as life can be completely different for you too. It’s really great,” said Susy. Susy and Roger Padfield

THE NORFOLK PINES
Spectacular Norfolk Island may possibly be the friendliest – and quirkiest – island in the world, despite being built on the ruins of one of history’s most brutal prison colonies. By Suzanne Monks
Horizons / April-May 2019
45
T R AV E L
In the 1800s, Norfolk Island was one of the most infamous and feared prisons in the British Empire, a place where the ‘worst of the worst’ convicts were sent. It is also to this day inhabited by descendants of the original mutineers from Captain Bligh’s ill-fated journey on the Bounty. But what strikes you most when you arrive is the sheer natural beauty of the island, and the warmth, friendliness and slight quirkiness of the islanders. Norfolk Island rests in splendid isolation in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, 1610km from Sydney and 1063km from Auckland. Although it’s only a twoand-a-half-hour flight from Sydney, you begin to appreciate Norfolk’s isolation as you scan the ocean below for the pinprick that is the island.
Given Norfolk covers just 8x5 kilometres it’s surprising how much there is to see and do in such a small place. When you finally spot land, it looks barely larger than its airport runway. Given Norfolk covers just 8x5 kilometres it’s surprising how much there is to see and do in such a small place. Car hire is recommended to access as much of the island as possible. It’s easy-going on the roads, with little traffic and it’s hard to get lost as there simply aren’t many roads. Norfolk is a volcanic outcrop and three quarters of it are covered by national parks and reserves. Walking tracks criss-cross the northern part, taking you through towering pine forests and along the tops of plunging cliffs with the surging waves of the Pacific Ocean pounding below. But if you really want to get to know Norfolk Island, the best way to see it
46
is on one of the many guided tours on offer. Your escort is likely to be one of the original mutineers’ descendants. If you ask, they might be happy to talk a bit of “Norf’k” – a mixture of Tahitian and 18th century seafaring English. It’s the language that originated from the original Bounty mutineers who hid on the even more remote Pitcairn Island with Tahitian wives and it is still used by many locals. If you’re lucky, you’ll see the unloading of the cargo ship that once a month brings in the island’s supplies. Goods are transported from the ship in ‘lighters’, small boats built of wood from the iconic Norfolk Island pines. It’s a hazardous job for the island men, but an exciting spectacle for visitors. Sometimes the whole island will line the foreshore to watch the amazing sight of food, equipment and even horses, cars and buses coming ashore in the very small wooden vessels. While the attractions and activities are many, it’s the history of Norfolk that is never far away, including the extraordinary ruins still standing sentry at Kingston on Slaughter Bay. Discovered in 1774 by James Cook, Norfolk was settled just two months after Sydney and, along with Sydney and Parramatta, is known as one of the three 1788 towns in Australia. It was twice used as a penal colony by the British and became renowned for the brutality and inhumane treatment of its prisoners. In the original township of Kingston, now a World Heritage site, you can wander through the ruins of buildings built by the convicts. Some of the Georgian buildings have been restored and are used by the local community as homes, museums and government
facilities. Others are just roofless ruins, exposed to the wind and salt spray, and it’s here, where the most wretched of convicts lived, that the sadness of this island can hit you. Yet somehow, despite constant visual reminders of a brutal history, the modern inhabitants of Norfolk have learned to live with the ghosts of the past. In 1774, when Captain Cook became the first white man to land on the island, he observed a single Norfolk Island pine on a bleak corner of Emily Bay. That same tree, now known as Lone Pine, is stilling standing and along with it, Cook’s description of Norfolk Island as “Paradise” has also stood the test of time.
Getting there From Perth, travel to Brisbane or Sydney where Air New Zealand flies to Norfolk Island. An overnight stop in Brisbane may be necessary depending on the flight schedule. RAC Travel can organise your complete travel package, including airfares and accommodation or ask us about our Norfolk Island group tour. Call RAC Travel on 1300 655 179.

Don’t miss Fletcher’s Mutiny Cyclorama
This Cyclorama is a 360-degree giant panoramic painting conceived by Norfolk Islander Marie Bailey, a descendant of Fletcher Christian. With sound effects and music, the Cyclorama follows the story of the Bounty and its crew, from 1780s Portsmouth to Tahiti, and from there to Pitcairn where the ship was burned, culminating with the journey of the mutineers’ descendants to Norfolk Island.
Breakfast Bushwalk
TOP: View from Captain Cook lookout; MIDDLE: Kingston from Queen Elizabeth lookout; BOTTOM: In World Heritage listed Kingston you can explore the ruins of old buildings.
This is a truly spectacular but still leisurely 3.5km walk from the pine forests of the national park, across the cliff tops, to the Captain Cook Monument. Once you’ve taken in the views and identified the place where Captain Cook came ashore, you’re more than ready for the barbecue breakfast with even more beautiful ocean views.
St Barnabas
At the end of Headstone Road, you will find St Barnabas Chapel. Built in 1880, the soaring roof is designed like the keel of a ship and the large beams are made out of Norfolk pine treated with whale oil. The ornate stained-glass Rose Window was made by the famous William Morris firm in England.
Norfolk Island Museum
There are four museums located in World Heritage Kingston – No.10 Quality Row, a beautifully restored Georgian house; the Pier Store, with artefacts from the Bounty, Pitcairn Island and around Norfolk Island; the Sirius Museum which holds artefacts from HMS Sirius, the flagship of the First Fleet which ran aground on the nearby reef; and the Commissariat Store with a fascinating collection of archaeological remains from the Kingston area.

Taxi drone lands The decades-old dream of flying cars is being kept alive by a joint venture between Audi, aeronautical company Airbus and the design and engineering firm Italdesign. At a drone convention in Amsterdam, the trio demonstrated a quarter-scale prototype for a flying taxi that combines a self-driving electric car with a passenger drone. Well, it’s more a dronemounted pod which gets plonked onto a vehicle chassis. Once on its wheels, the car-mounted capsule could then drive from the test area autonomously. Audi spokesman Dr Bernd Martens said flying taxis would appeal to a wide range of city dwellers in the future. Expect to wait at least another decade before they’re available.
More five-year warranties Subaru and Toyota are among the last remaining mainstream car makers to have moved to permanently offer new car warranties of five years or more. Outside of special offers, the two manufacturers previously offered three-year warranties. At the time of writing, Nissan was the only remaining mainstream manufacturer still offering warranties of only three years, while Kia continued to lead the pack with a seven-year warranty. Toyota said the warranty on hybrid car batteries could be extended to 10 years with an annual inspection from the fifth year.
Car sick no more Remember when the cure for car sickness was simply the gruff advice to roll down a window? Well, now there’s a more scientific approach. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has created a system that detects when occupants are likely to feel car sick and can make changes to the vehicle to help prevent or minimise it. JLR says the system uses biometric sensors that record physiological signals and combines this with the car’s motion and dynamics data. It then applies both these data sets to an algorithm to calculate a ‘wellness score’, which in testing has been shown to be a predictor of car sickness. Changes to the vehicle’s ride settings and cabin temperature are then made to reduce or even avoid the nausea.

Still hot at 50 The renowned toy car brand Hot Wheels has turned 50, and it’s celebrating by re-releasing some of the original Hot Wheels cars first sold. The very first Hot Wheels model sold was the Custom Camaro, pictured below. This car, together with another 15 models released soon after, are part of the first group of Hot Wheels cars now known as the “Sweet 16”. The well-known orange track sold alongside the cars dates back to the brand’s inception. Its colour was chosen because, just like the cars Hot Wheels created, kids were attracted to bright colours. Since 1968, Hot Wheels has made more than six billion cars.

Kia Sportage diesel One may view mid-life updates to cars as a way for manufacturers to get a second bite of the media cherry without releasing a new model. Fair point. But when there’s an all-new gearbox with two extra gears, and some critical new safety gear and fully revised suspension added, some of that cynicism falls away. Especially when those additions also say to other manufacturers: “Look, this is now what you have to do to compete.” The resulting rivalry between manufacturers is good for
Horizons / April-May 2019
consumers, especially in this market segment. This latest iteration of the five-seater Kia Sportage brings with it autonomous emergency braking (AEB) as standard, along with lane keep assist. Kia’s move to make AEB standard kit across the Sportage range follows Mazda’s move to standardise it in the CX-5, and Subaru putting AEB in all their Foresters. The Sportage also gets blind-spot detection, and even intelligent parking assist. Less than 10 years ago, cars that could steer into a parking spot were as futuristic as self-tying sneakers.
Now you can get it on a Korean SUV that starts at $33,700. Mind you, that’s $1,000 more than it was previously. We tested the Sportage diesel, because it now comes with that new eightspeed auto, which Kia also makes in-house, rather than buying it from a third party. All petrol versions of the Sportage come with a sixspeed auto. The 2.0-litre turbo diesel engine is the same as it was prior to the update, making 136kW and 400Nm. However, now that there are the eight different ratios to help keep the diesel operating within its relatively
narrow peak torque range of 1750-2750rpm, progress is smoother and more efficient. The suspension and steering systems have been further revised, with changes to make the ride more compliant and to provide more feedback through the steering wheel. There have been some minor tweaks to the Sportage’s body styling at the front and rear, and the range-topping Sportage GT-Line gets LED headlights. With its industry-leading seven-year warranty and all that standard safety gear in the new Sportage, your small SUV test drive list would be incomplete without it.

Audi RS 4 Avant You don’t need a car that can carry 10 bags of garden fertiliser and still accelerate to 100km/h in less than five seconds. No one does. But no one requires expensive wine, Italian shoes and labradoodles either. Yet people buy them anyway. The Audi RS 4 is like that. It’s a luxury which, like most luxuries, is both desirable and faintly absurd. The mere fact that today’s automotive engineers can now give you a luxurious station wagon with 331kW and 600Nm that can also
52
calmly sit in traffic on a boiling WA day, while the seats massage your back in air-conditioned comfort, is simply incredible. The RS 4 is not just a handy load-lugger and a stupendous sports car at the same time, it’s also very good at being a luxury car. It has an exquisitely crafted interior crammed with leather, aluminium and gloss black finishes. There’s a thick, leather-bound flat-bottomed steering wheel, while that seat massage function offers you three different styles: Wave, Stretch and Knead. Luxury also implies a level
of exclusivity, which the RS 4 delivers thanks to its drive away price of $168,535. The test car also had 20-inch alloy wheels plus the Technik package, which includes a head-up display and LED headlights. The biggest news ushered in with the current RS 4 when it arrived in 2018 was its 2.9-litre, twin-turbocharged V6 engine, which replaced the 4.2-litre, naturally aspirated V8 in its predecessor. Now, the V6 doesn’t sound as good as the V8, but the V6 does make the same power (331kW) and a lot more torque (600Nm compared
to the old V8’s 430Nm). Critically though, the V6’s peak torque output arrives early in the rev range – from as low as 1900rpm. The old V8 needed to rev to 4000rpm before its maximum torque arrived. This makes the engine’s best performance outputs far more accessible than they were in the V8, and this RS 4 does out-perform its V8 predecessor. The price of the RS 4 has come down compared to the previous model too (by $18,000), but $168,560 is still a lot of after-tax dollars for most people.

Specifications Engine: 2.5-litre petrol Power: 136kW @ 5800rpm Torque: 239Nm @ 4400rpm Claimed fuel economy: 7.4L/100km Price: fr $37,865 drive away ANCAP safety rating: N/A at publication date
Subaru Forester Aside from being one of the most capable medium-sized SUVs for off road driving and a good handling thing on the bitumen, the Subaru Forester continues to also take the lead on the safety front. You see, Subaru has used the Forester to introduce its new driver recognition technology, something we previewed briefly in the February/March edition of Horizons. Subaru calls it a Driver Monitoring System (DMS), and it uses an infrared camera in the dash to recognise when the driver is tired by seeing
Horizons / April-May 2019
when they are doing long blinks, which then triggers audible and visual warnings. If the driver is distracted, such as when they are looking outside of a given range, the warning will also be triggered. However, the system will be hampered if you’re wearing dark sunglasses, a hat or some other face covering. That’s the safety part. After recognising the driver, the car can also automatically adjust the door mirror angles, air conditioning and infotainment screen display to the driver’s preferences. Among the few negatives with this new Forester is the fact it looks an awful lot like the
previous one, even though there has in fact been a major revamp under its skin. There’s more room inside this five-seater than there ever has been in a Forester, the autonomous emergency braking now also works when reversing and they’ve even made the powered tailgate close faster. The 2.5-litre petrol engine is almost all-new, and thanks to several changes it now produces 136kW (up from 126kW) and 239Nm (up from 235Nm). The engine gets a much higher compression ratio (up from 10:1 to 12:1) and yet it still runs fine on 91 RON
unleaded fuel. With engines more susceptible to knocking as compression ratios and heat increase, Subaru has added sodium-filled exhaust valves which assist with cooling, as well as revised top piston rings and upgraded engine coolant flow control. These incremental improvements to the engine, plus many more, have helped the new Forester become more efficient (7.4L/100km compared to the old model’s 8.1L/100km) and yet produce more power and torque while still only requiring the cheapest fuel. That’s what we call a win.

Specifications Engine: Electric permanent magnet synchronous motor Power: 88kW Torque: 295Nm Electric driving efficiency: 115Wh/100km Claimed battery range: 230km Price: fr $50,000 drive away ANCAP safety rating: Not rated
Hyundai Ioniq Electric
On top of that though, there are two other models in the Ioniq range.
At $50,000 drive away, this is Australia’s cheapest fully electric car. For a small car, that’s still quite expensive. With the same amount you could buy an Audi A3 with enough change for two years of yacht club membership.
These comprise the Ioniq plug-in hybrid ($46,030), which has an 8.9kWh battery you can charge and then drive short distances of up to 60km on electricity only. Then there is the Ioniq Hybrid, recharged by the engine only, which has the smallest battery (1.56kWh) and provides electric assistance to the petrol engine. It’s also more budget friendly, starting at $37,700 drive away.
But the new Hyundai Ioniq Electric is a big step in the right direction, not only for its price, but for the range offered by its 28kWh battery, which Hyundai claims is 230km.
54
The upside of these electrified drivetrains in three different grades is exactly that: choice.
If you’re zapping about in the Ioniq Electric and do happen to run out of ions, it can also take on a lot of charge in a short time, providing the right charging stations are available. Outside of the RAC Electric Highway®, fast charging stations are currently thin on the ground in Western Australia, but if you can plug into one, it’ll charge your EV very quickly. The Ioniq Electric can be charged to 80 per cent capacity in 23 minutes. Where the Ioniq Electric obviously uses no liquid fuel at all, the plug-in Ioniq’s
consumption will vary depending on how often you charge it and in turn, how often the petrol engine is called upon to step in and take charge, so to speak. In the ADR test, the regular hybrid uses 3.4L/100km. As the cheapest new electric vehicle in the market so far, and one with range that’s actually practical, the Ioniq Electric is placing competitive pressure on the rest of the industry to make low emission cars cheaper. On the electric vehicle stage in Australia, that’s its most important role of all.

If I use a registered mechanic to service my car and he puts a part into my car that hasn’t got the makers name on it, will I lose my warranty if something goes wrong? For example, an oil or fuel filter that is identical to the manufacturer’s filter but without the vehicle manufacturer’s name on it. Colin Baker, Kalbarri Your vehicle warranty will be retained under the provisions of Australian Consumer Law (ACL), providing the servicing to the vehicle is carried out by qualified staff, according to the manufacturer’s specifications, and using acceptable quality parts. Under the provisions of ACL, “acceptable quality” means safe, durable and acceptable in appearance and finish. This doesn’t require the parts to be made by the vehicle manufacturer, just that they are of acceptable quality.
Also, if the manufacturer’s warranty requires a vehicle to be serviced by a dealer, this may constitute anticompetitive conduct under the Competition and Consumer Act 2010. For more on vehicle servicing and warranties, see accc.gov.au I have a 2007 Nissan X-Trail. The car has developed an issue where the revs are going up and down by themselves when idling. I have taken it to two mechanics already who can’t seem to determine what the issue is even after performing diagnostic tests. Gregor Gilchrist, Tuart Hill This issue could have several causes. There could be a problem with the valve controlling the intake air flow, or a vacuum leak where too much air is allowed to enter the air intake system of the engine. It could also be a problem with an electronic sensor, or a combination of all these. Bring your vehicle in to an RAC Auto
Services centre and we’ll be happy to look at it. As a member, you receive one free 30-minute fault diagnosis each year, and 10 per cent off any labour costs performed by RAC. After having a tyre puncture repaired recently, I was told the tyre pressures were incorrect. I have been given different figures from the car manual, the car servicer and the puncture repairer. Which value should I use? Craig Reynolds, Kardinya Providing your tyres are of the same specification as those fitted to the vehicle when it was new, the best guide is the tyre placard on your vehicle. This can usually be found inside the driver’s door jamb, in the glove box or inside the fuel filler door. Remember to check your tyre pressures once a month. Having the wrong pressures can affect your vehicle’s safety performance, its fuel efficiency and tyre life.

Caravanning incidents on the rise With increasing numbers of WA caravanners having their dream road trip end in misfortune, RAC is urging caravan owners to remain vigilant and make safety a priority. In recent years, RAC Insurance data revealed a 33 per cent surge in claims related to caravanning incidents. In 2017/18 there were 1100 caravanrelated claims received for incidents including theft and collision, compared with 824 claims in 2015/16.
58
“Regional driving conditions vary greatly to those in metropolitan areas with dangers such as loose road surfaces, high speeds and wandering wildlife,” RAC claims manager Glen Walker said. “Towing a caravan amplifies these risks as it increases the amount of space you take up on the road, making seemingly simple tasks, like reversing or turning a corner, more dangerous. “A caravan also adds substantial weight to your vehicle, increasing the time it takes to come to a complete stop.” In serious caravan crashes, 67 per cent involve no other vehicles, and single vehicle crashes which end in the vehicle overturning account for 51 per cent of all serious crashes involving a caravan in WA.
“Our advice is to practice towing your caravan at low speeds for short periods and take formal training with an accredited instructor. “It’s also important to secure your caravan and valuables, even during a quick stop off. Be conscious of where you park, immobilise your vehicle and ensure all windows and doors are locked.” For tips on how to reverse a caravan, see page 18.
RAC Insurance offers caravan insurance to protect your caravan from unexpected events such as accidents, fire, theft and storm. To find out more and to view the PDS, visit rac.com.au/caravan

Pack your car the right way for Easter driving Packing the car for an Easter road trip is one of those jobs that just needs to be done. But if you’re carrying a lot of gear, there is a right and wrong way to get it all in there. The heaviest items should go in the boot and be placed as far forward and low as possible. In an SUV or four-wheel drive, make sure heavy objects are tied down so they don’t move if you brake suddenly. If you have tie-down points in the cargo area, use them. When stacking gear on roof racks, don’t overdo it. Making your car top heavy can increase the chance of a rollover in a crash. Large objects also affect the car’s fuel economy due to aerodynamic drag, and there are legal limits to how high and wide you can stack loads that project outside the width, length and height of your car. When your car is under a heavier load than normal, it’s handling will change. The extra weight will change the acceleration, how long it takes to stop, and how you steer around corners. All of this will increase the loading on your brakes, tyres, suspension and engine, so be extra cautious once you hit higher speed roads.
To make your car safe and ready for the extra stresses of Easter road tripping, get it serviced before you go. At RAC Auto Services our vehicle services include safety checks. From hooves to highways During the early 1900s when horse and cart ruled the streets of WA, the motor car was seen as both a novelty and a nuisance. Few could have guessed back then that those noisy, horseless carts would transform our lives, influencing where and how we lived and giving a new sense of freedom and connection to many people who had previously been isolated. To celebrate those early days of motoring in WA, RAC has partnered with the Museum of
Perth for the exhibition From hooves to highways: The history of the motor car in Western Australia. The exhibition tells the stories of Perth’s pioneering motorists, the first cars on our roads, and the journey which began with a small group of visionary car owners who formed the Automobile Club of WA - now RAC - more than 114 years ago.
A significant book titled The Motor Car in Western Australia published by the Club in 1908, forms the basis of the exhibition, with photographs, stories and motoring memorabilia providing a rich insight into our State’s fascinating motoring history. The exhibition will be open until 21 June at the Atlas Building, 8-10 The Esplanade, Perth. For more details visit museumofperth.com.au

Quirky place names in WA Point Torment Located north of Derby, Point Torment was a landing point for ships during the 1800s. It was named after the crew of the HMS Beagle was ‘attacked’ by swarms of mosquitos in 1838. Having been so terrorised by a small, biting insect, we can only wonder how the ship and crew felt about Shark Bay.
Disaster Bay Disaster Bay was named by Captain Phillip Parker King of the HMS Bathurst. In 1822 while in the bay, the ship’s anchor was lost. With the crew unable to control the ship due to a lack of wind, it drifted close to dangerous reefs, though it never hit them. It was more of a ‘near-disaster’, which is not quite as interesting as a name.
Cyanide Swamp This area of swamp near Kalgoorlie was originally named by the lessees of a station there. The reasons for the name are unclear, though it was likely related to a cyanide treatment plant in the area which was used in gold mining.
Crooked Brook Forest This jarrah and marri forest is 25km south east of Bunbury in the Shire of Dardanup. It has several walk trails and a nature playground and, yes, there are quite a few twists and turns in the brook that winds through the area. Despite its contortions, Crooked Brook can be easily accessed by car, wheelchair, bus or on foot.
Siberia Originally named Waverley in 1898, this now abandoned Goldfields townsite had its name changed in 1914 after concerns were raised that some WA towns had identical names to those in
82
Useless Loop, Shark Bay
other Australian states. It was renamed Siberia Tank after the water supply in the area, which was likely just a local joke as the area is so hot – unlike the original Siberia.
Useless Loop Located in the now World Heritage area of Shark Bay, Useless Loop has actually proven to be quite useful as a salt mine. It was first named by French mariner Louis-Henri de Saulces de Freycinet who attempted to sail into the area but mistakenly believed a sandbar was blocking the way.
Woop Woop If you’ve ever driven so far it felt like you were ‘out woop woop’, it may have actually been Woop Woop. The small timber settlement of Woop Woop was established around a saw mill in 1925. It was located north of Boyup Brook so not quite in the middle of nowhere.
Damboring Damboring was the name of a station
in the Wongan Hills area. You’ll still find East Damboring on the NorthamPithara Road, north of Wongan Hills in the Wheatbelt. For some extra excitement, head to the Damboring Nature Reserve. In fairness, the name is pronounced with more emphasis on the dam and less on the boring.
Youanmi Located south west of Sandstone, Youanmi is an abandoned Goldfields town. The origin of the name is uncertain but may have been a corruption of a local Aboriginal word. It was originally given to a spring in the area and later the townsite.
North Pole As with ‘Siberia’ in the Goldfields, the East Pilbara mining centre called the North Pole was most likely named ironically as the area was so hot. WA’s North Pole is about 50km from Marble Bar. The area holds some of the earth’s oldest fossils.
