President’s message RAC members saving millions through benefits Over the past 114 years, RAC’s membership has grown from the emboldened first motoring enthusiasts in 1905, to more than one million Western Australians in 2019. As one of those million plus members, you have exclusive access to significant benefits across the State. You also help us make Western Australia a better place. Since it was first launched, RAC’s Member Benefits Program has grown to become one of the most comprehensive initiatives of its kind in WA. The program’s success is, in part, due to our focus on developing strong partnerships between local businesses and the community. We continue to look for new opportunities to help with every aspect of daily life, and this is why we’ve focused on introducing new benefits. This includes recently announced partnerships with Kleenheat, Wizard Pharmacy and Retravision.

Remembering Woop Woop I was reading your 10 Best in the April/May edition of Horizons and came across Woop Woop in the article. I can remember my grandfather telling me about Woop Woop. It was written about in the book, Timber Milling in Australia 1849-1984 by David Mack. Dave Meredith

Rock rescue A lesson in road safety In April, around 10,000 high school students attended the annual RAC bstreetsmart youth road safety event at RAC Arena. Students saw a simulated crash scene and heard from those impacted by road trauma, including emergency services personnel.

 On 24 March I had a major accident where I fell 10 metres onto rocks. If not for the fast response from, firstly my climbing partner (best friend ever), and three Kiwi guys walking the track at that time, I wouldn’t be alive today. Also, the quick response from emergency services that attended the remote location, and the RAC Rescue helicopter and their team for being there so fast and getting me safely off the rocks and flying me to Royal Perth Hospital. Thank you. I have had my first lot of surgery and have walked away from this with a badly broken arm, some cuts and bruises, but nothing much more than that. I’m lucky to be alive. Peter Jensen

 My daughter was there today and whilst she found it confronting, she says it was an amazing experience. It really made her think about what she does, especially being a new P-plate driver, so I say a big thank you to all involved. Anthea Ducrow  Everyone needs to see this. It was amazing but heartbreaking. Great work to everyone involved. Andrêa Petroski  Went to this a few years ago. It was excellent very confronting. Ang Redmond  My daughter has been to this and it is so well done. Really leaves an impact. Thank you RAC. Catherine Davey

News in brief from the RAC and beyond

Device keeps children safer during a rescue Transferring an adult safely into a rescue helicopter during an emergency can be a highly complex operation. Getting children, whose size and weight can vary substantially, safely on board a helicopter in an emergency involves an even greater level of complexity and quick thinking. During the recent Queensland floods, a baby was winched from a submerged vehicle using only a duffel bag. Following that, a special Child Rescue Capsule was developed to ensure infants and small children can be quickly and more safely secured and winched out of danger during a helicopter rescue. The capsule can hold children up to 50kg in weight and up to 99cm tall. It has a see-through window, a five-point safety harness system and can be used in rescues over land and water. The RAC Rescue helicopters are now equipped with the Child Rescue Capsule, ensuring young passengers can be transported more safely. The two RAC Rescue helicopters, based in Bunbury and Perth, are funded by the State Government, managed by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) and sponsored by RAC. The Child Rescue Capsule was developed by CHC Helicopters in consultation with the manufacturer.

Are your wipers spoiling the view?

Nominations for RAC Council

Windscreen wiper blades are a relatively inexpensive and small car part that plays a big part in your safety on the road.

Nominations for election to the Council of The Royal Automobile Club of W.A. (Incorporated) close at 12 noon on Wednesday 31 July 2019.

After sitting dormant in the heat for most of the summer, your wiper blades can be in poor condition for the start of winter rains. If your wipers are squeaking, shuddering or just not cleaning water effectively from your windscreen, it’s time to replace them. Extensively damaged blades can also damage your windscreen. The rubber on your wiper blades should be smooth and free of bumps and imperfections. If the wiper is dirty but otherwise in good shape, you can gently clean the rubber with a cloth and some liquid glass cleaner. The blades will need to be changed if they are perished and have lost their flexibility. On some vehicles, it’s possible to just replace the rubber, but on others you may need to replace the whole assembly. The assembly is the section that pivots when you lift the arm away from the windscreen. This section can be released and replaced with a new one.

Prospective nominees are referred to Rules 12.3(a) and (b) of the Club, which read: Check your owners’ manual to see which part can be replaced. If you get new wiper blades, don’t wipe them as they are likely to have a graphite coating which helps the blade glide over the windscreen, giving you better water clearing action. Whether just replacing the rubber or the whole assembly, check with your local auto accessories store for the right size wiper to suit your car make and model. Also make sure your windscreen washer bottle is full, and if you’re using a detergent in the water (which is recommended) only use a windscreen washer fluid, not household detergent.

If a driver loses consciousness Experiencing a sudden loss of consciousness for any reason is distressing no matter when or where it occurs. But when it happens to the driver of a moving vehicle, the consequences can be even more devastating. If you are a passenger in a car with a driver who has lost consciousness, it’s important to keep your seatbelt on. Also leave the driver’s seatbelt on and don’t try to move them out of your way. Grab the steering wheel and manoeuvre the car to the side of the

Horizons / June-July 2019

road and shift the car into neutral so it doesn’t increase speed if the driver still has a foot on the accelerator. Switch the hazard lights on. Do not reach over and switch the ignition off as this will shut off power steering and make the brakes ineffective. If possible, apply the handbrake - don’t do it suddenly as you may lose control of the car. Once the vehicle has come to a complete stop, it’s then safe to switch off the ignition and call emergency services.

“12.3(a) Except in the case of retiring Councillors who are eligible and offer themselves for election or re-election under rule 12.3(c) and subject to rule 14.1(b)(ii), a person must be nominated by at least 25 Members who are Voting Members as at the date of lodgement of the nomination form. 12.3(b) The procedures to be followed in conducting the nomination process must be set out in the By-Laws, including the requirements for the nomination form and the date by which the nomination form is required to be lodged.” Eligibility requirements for nominees are set out in Rule 7.2 and in the Associations Incorporation Act 2015 (WA). A copy of the Rules and ByLaws can be found on the website rac.com.au Nomination forms may be obtained on application to the Chief Executive, RAC, 832 Wellington Street, West Perth, from 1 July 2019. Nominations to fill five vacancies on the Council of the RAC will close at 12 noon on 31 July 2019. Subject to the Rules, retiring members of Council are eligible for re-election.

HOW TO STAY AHEAD OF

WEATHER Winter storms pose a real threat to lives and can cause millions of dollars in property damage. From May to October, it’s storm season in the southern half of WA, including Perth. Although storms can strike anywhere, their movement is often unpredictable. When they do strike, they may impact one area far more severely than others. Damage from heavy rain, lightning, hail, flash flooding and gale-force winds, can be devastating. You might not know exactly when a storm will hit or just how hard, but there are simple things you can do to prepare, to reduce the risk of storm damage to your home and protect those around you.

ď Ş Taking steps to prepare your home and family is the best way to stay safe during dangerous weather. For more tips on what to do, visit rac.com.au/storms

Getting ready for storm season 1

he first and most important T thing to do to prepare for heavy winter rains is clear your gutters. During summer, gutters can become heavily clogged with leaves and leaf litter so when the first heavy rains hit, gutters may overflow. That overflow can potentially flow into your eves and into the ceiling. Over time, water soaking into your home’s footings can also cause structural damage.

heck that water is flowing C through your downpipes – you can run a garden hose into the pipe to check for blockages. To clear elbow joints, use wire to push the debris through. Check your roof and gutters for damage or loose material and replace any damaged tiles. heck all trees and tall shrubs C around your home and trim branches to prevent them from falling onto your home and car. If you have trees close to power lines, hire a contractor to clear branches away from the line.

Right before a storm If you know a big storm is coming, follow this checklist before it hits to make sure your home, family and neighbours are as safe as possible.

C heck outside your home, including balconies and patios, for loose objects and rubbish. Remove or tie down anything that could be picked up and tossed around by strong winds.

I f possible, park your car under shelter.

E nsure your pets are safely under cover.

If there is lightning, unplug appliances in your home and avoid using landline phones.

 P repare an emergency kit with

torch, spare batteries, first-aid kit.

 K eep a list of emergency phone numbers, including the SES, in an easily accessible location.

I f particularly heavy rains are coming, have an emergency plan including a relocation plan in case your home is flooded.

If your home sustains storm damage that you can’t deal with yourself, call the SES for emergency assistance on 132 500. SES volunteers can make temporary emergency repairs to homes that are badly damaged, including damage caused by fallen trees and storm-damaged roofs.

How to Stay safe around fallen power lines Fallen power lines are incredibly dangerous. If you come across a fallen power line during a storm, always exercise extreme caution. Electricity can ‘arc’ or jump up to six metres, so even if you’re not close enough to be in contact with the lines, you may still be at risk of electrocution. Stand a minimum of eight metres away. Do not touch anything that may be in contact with a fallen power line, such as tree branches. If your car is in contact with a power line, remain inside if possible until the power is switched off. If you do need to evacuate because of another danger, make sure you’re not in contact with the car and the ground at the same time. You should jump clear of the car and land with both feet together. Once clear of the car, move a minimum of eight metres away. If you come across a fallen power line call Western Power’s 24-hour emergency number 13 13 51.

SPEEDING HIGH RISK, LITTLE REWARD By Rebecca Martin

and Lancelin, to lessen the trauma impact when crashes occurred.

Back in 2017, a six-year-old boy, his mother and an 83-year-old grandfather were killed in a head-on collision on the Indian Ocean Drive. They were just three of six people killed on that notorious coastal corridor that year, a pretty but fatal road, with sweeping ocean views, scrubby native bush and an indiscriminate nature. Mothers, fathers, grandparents, tourists, locals – the Indian Ocean Drive toll has been far reaching. By the time that six-year-old boy tragically lost his life in 2017, a wide-

reaching safety review of the Indian Ocean Drive was already underway, sadly too late to save him. Experts found several levers to improve the safety of the Drive, including widening lanes, improved road markings, more overtaking lanes and at least immediately, a reduction in the speed limit from 110km to 100km on the road between Breakwater Drive

Given the horrific road toll, the review, which included the Road Safety Commission, Main Roads WA and WA Police, was widely welcomed. But the speed limit reduction drew condemnation and many inches of heated online discussion, even though best estimates suggested only three minutes would be added to the journey. However, since that specific stretch of road was rezoned to 100km, there have been crashes, but no fatalities.

Speed resistance The example shows that, even in the face of an unacceptable road toll on a road widely recognised as dangerous, speed and speed limits remain highly contentious for West Australians. Even though speed is recognised as a leading cause of road fatalities and increases the chances of trauma in the event of a crash, most are against any targeted reductions to speed limits. “As a rule of thumb, a 10 per cent decrease in speed will result in a 40 per cent decrease in fatalities, regardless of the cause of the crash,” says Pat Walker, RAC executive general manager advocacy and members. “But getting the WA community to support speed reduction is difficult. It’s not a silver bullet. Safer cars, safer drivers and better roads – all of that is critical. “But the slower you are driving, the more chance you have of getting out alive from a crash, no matter the cause.”

Speed and the body On the Indian Ocean Drive, the safety review found that a significant number of the crashes occurred from increased traffic, “resulting in vehicles drifting to the right colliding with an oncoming vehicle.” RAC Rescue helicopter critical care paramedic Eric Beason says he has attended “maybe a dozen crash situations” on the Indian Ocean Drive. “People can’t judge distance very well when standing still, let alone at 110km an hour and with another object travelling at speed in the opposite direction. “Your depth perception is not made to translate what’s happening at that speed,” he says. “When two cars impact at speed on a road like that, you get what we call a triple collision. There is the car impact, then your body hits something inside the car. Then inside your body, when your organs hit the inside of the car that’s where the real damage is done.

20

“You can’t always see that immediately, but the surgeons can see the difference in damage to the organs of someone injured at 110km versus one at 50km. So, it’s not a piece of metal that kills you it’s the impact of your organs against your body. “The statistics don’t lie. Once you start bringing the speed down, the statistics go down. It doesn’t mean those roads aren’t safe, but it’s risk versus reward really. What kind of quality of life do you want and what risks are you willing to take to pay for that?”

What do our members say? A recent RAC survey found that unprompted, one in two members said speeding was one of the riskiest behaviours on our roads that leads to fatalities. But we found little support for a decrease in current speed limits, particularly on regional roads, where speed limits, and the fatality rates, are much higher. However, more than 25 per cent changed their minds after being presented with information about the impact of speed on survival rates. “We think perhaps there is a disconnect in people’s minds as to how big a difference lower speed can make to your survival outcomes,” Walker says. “More education around that could help.”

Although four in five people said they focused more on obeying the road rules than arriving at their destination quickly, nearly all admitted to speeding on at least one occasion in the previous 12 months.

94%

of respondents admitted to driving up to 5km/h above the speed limit

(58% consider this at least somewhat socially acceptable).

80%

admitted to driving 6-10km/h above the limit

(37% consider this at least somewhat socially acceptable).

50%

admitted to driving 11km/h or more above the limit

(20% consider this at least somewhat socially acceptable).

“It’s pretty concerning that so many people think it’s socially acceptable to drive over the speed limit, and do so regularly, yet also understand that in doing so, they’re increasing the risk for themselves and others on the road,” Walker says. “For the hundreds of families that have been affected by road trauma and speed, that must be hard to understand.”

Do it for the kids One area where at least some members said reductions in speed limits was suitable was in school zones. Six in 10 were either supportive or neutral towards speed limit reduction in school zones and 28 per cent supported further speed reductions in built-up areas. It’s a sentiment shared by the community in the City of Vincent. Following a community survey which showed nearly 60 per cent support, a two-year trial is now underway reducing speed limits in some City of Vincent residential streets from 50km/h to 40km/h. It’s hoped that the trial will reduce the severity of impact and injuries, if crashes occur, and create more liveable communities. For more information on the trial visit imagine.vincent.wa.gov.au

We call on the State and Federal governments to increase investment in safer roads for all of WA Indian Ocean Drive has been a repeat entry in RAC’s Risky Roads top 10 list. We welcome safety measures taken so far, including installation of edge and centre audible line markings and passing lanes. However, further investment is needed to improve the safety of our roads.

“ The slower you are driving, the more chance you have of getting out alive from a crash, no matter the cause.”

Speeding is the main cause of fatalities on WA roads. Setting and appropriately enforcing speed limits which reflect the road conditions and consider the tolerances of the human body will reduce speed-related fatalities and serious injuries. RAC is calling on the Federal and State governments to accelerate funding to deliver crucial and high impact regional road safety improvements.

MotorinG pioneers

By Alex Forrest

Imagine Perth in the late 1800s: a bustling city, but not one car to be seen.

This was the internal combustion engine, and it would change humanity forever.

Instead, there are only the sounds of horses, the whistles and calls of those driving them and the sights and smells of a city which was becoming the gateway to the goldrush unfolding 600km to the east.

In WA, this change began in March 1898, when WA’s first car hit the road. It was a Leon-Bollée Tricar, driven down Hay Street by French engineer Armand Bargigli.

Soon that quietness would be broken, because a new and exciting way to get around was emerging. Finally, humans had found a way to harness the tremendous energy contained in distilled crude oil (petrol or diesel) by igniting it inside a cylinder and using the explosion to drive a piston down.

By the early 1900s, cars were still in the minority in WA, but there were enough to prompt calls for new regulations to manage them, to advocate for their drivers and to keep all road users safe. By 1904, cars had their dedicated pioneers and advocates. What they needed was a club.

“Our city’s business leaders and its high society fully embraced this new trend,” says WA historian Shannon Lovelady. “They called it ‘automobilism’.” “The motor car truly revolutionised Perth, but the journey wasn’t easy,” she says. “It was the extraordinary founding members of the Automobile Club of Western Australia, formed on 28 January 1905, who were instrumental in smoothing the way.” Here are three people who had an impact on motoring in Western Australia and whose efforts also contributed to the work of WA’s most enduring and influential mobility club, which we know today as the RAC.

MOTORING BELOW: Hay Street Perth, 1916.

Jack Winterbottom Wentworth John ‘Jack’ Winterbottom played a major role in establishing the Western Australian motor industry – not just in selling cars but in the industry supporting their assembly and finishing. This included car body building, painting and upholstery, which was performed on vehicles imported in bare chassis form or partially disassembled, ahead of them being offered for sale. At its peak, the Winterbottom Motor Company was one of the largest car and truck sales networks in WA, with more than 700 staff. After moving from South Australia to Perth in 1905, Winterbottom opened a business in Hay Street in the city, called Perth Motor House.

Cecil Dent Two major firsts for Western Australian motoring are directly connected to the widely travelled real estate agent, Cecil Dent. Dent was among the founding members of the RAC and was involved in erecting many of WA’s first road signs. According to RAC records, Dent is also credited with producing the first roadmap for motorists in WA. As well as helping early WA motorists find their way around the State, in 1903 Dent became the first person to purchase a car from a car dealer in WA. That dealer was Claude Dean, who like Dent, was also part of the group of motoring enthusiasts behind the formation of the RAC.

24

The car Dent bought was a Curved Dash Oldsmobile, which according to WA motoring historian John Parker, cost £180. Dent used the car to cover great distances in WA, putting up signs as he went. He was aided by the Oldsmobile’s reliability which was unusual for cars of this era. RAC records say that in the early days of motoring, the State Government did not regard road signage as among their responsibilities. In the following decades, dedicated RAC road sign service crews worked to install thousands of signs throughout the State. Some of these signs are now in the RAC archive and private collections. All of it started with Cecil Dent.

Winterbottom and his business partner George Harris initially sold Ford and Rover cars, the French brand Delaunay-Belleville and the British-built Armstrong-Whitworth cars, according to historian John Parker’s book Cars, Characters and Crankhandles. Parker also says Winterbottom is credited with being the first person to offer a licensed vehicle for hire, a 10hp Darraq, in 1905. In 1915, Jack Winterbottom founded the Winterbottom Motor Company, which was initially based at 9 St George’s Terrace in Perth and would become widely known as the agent for Dodge cars. Over the years, Winterbottoms also had the agency for Austin and Singer cars, Chrysler, Plymouth and DeSoto cars, DeSoto and Fargo trucks and Lambretta scooters. While Winterbottom had no shortage of competition from the likes of local dealers Sydney Atkinson and Mortlock brothers, he remains one of WA’s motoring pioneers.

Marion Bell In 1925, embarking on a trip around Australia by car was not to be taken lightly. With dirt roads almost all the way, patchy communications, unreliable water supplies and 1920s car technology, risk was all around. But in October 1925, Marion Bell headed north from Perth with her 11-year-old daughter to drive around Australia in an Oldsmobile Six car. When they arrived back in Perth to a warm welcome in April 1926, Bell became the first woman to drive around Australia in a car. The trip had only been done twice before her. Such was the significance of Bell’s achievement, she was greeted on the final leg of her trip back to Perth by the RAC president of the time, LR Butt. Bell was also an astute businesswoman and in the two years before her epic trip, established a bus service between Perth and Fremantle. Bell’s bus service utilised six buses, which she later sold. She then moved into the taxi business, which was based in Fremantle. Bell and her husband also ran a service station, as well as providing an ambulance service for the Fremantle area on behalf of St John Ambulance. As Marion Bell become increasingly renowned for her driving experience and mechanical knowledge, she became an advocate for female drivers. In Perth’s Daily News newspaper in July 1935, she was reported as saying that “the caution and care which distinguishes the average woman motorist might well be followed by male drivers.”

Taking the leap The cover of this edition of Horizons shows an Overland Light Four car jumping from one side of a ramp to the other at the Royal Agricultural Society Show (now Perth Royal Show) in 1920. The stunt was re-enacted at the Olympia Show in London the following year.

HOME BURGLARY REDUCING YOUR RISK

While it’s no surprise that most victims of home burglary step up their household security following a break-in, what is surprising is that one in two householders with a home alarm don’t always activate it when they leave the house.

A recent RAC Security survey, which asked members about their attitudes to home security, found that 20 per cent of householders rarely or only sometimes turned on their alarm when away from home for shorter periods, while 16 per cent never did. It can take a burglar as little as five minutes to enter a home, according to a 2014 Australian Institute of Criminology report, indicating that short absences from the home may not present less of a risk. The survey also found that giving the ‘appearance’ of being at home was a popular security strategy employed by many people when they were out during the evening, with 44 per cent saying they leave lights on, and a radio

or TV. But it may not be much of a deterrent, with four in 10 saying they were at home when they were burgled. Having items stolen from backyards was the most common type of theft reported in the survey and almost 90 per cent of those who had been burgled said they implemented additional security measures following the event. The survey findings show that householders may often become complacent about how secure their homes are. The good news is that simple security measures employed consistently can keep a home from being targeted.

Going through a break-in How does it feel to experience a theft or break-in at your home? We asked two RAC members. Backyard break-in As an ex-Police officer, Scott Drage has never taken home security for granted. But despite having a locked backyard, Scott and his wife are one of many RAC members who have had property stolen from their yard this year.

“ I rang a neighbour who raced over to see if my wife was okay.” “My wife and I had been out. I dropped her off in the driveway and then left again. I suspect someone was watching from over the park and maybe didn’t see my wife go inside.

“She saw what she described as a ‘kid’ about 16 years old. He was riding one bike and wheeling another one. She yelled out to him and he fell off would you believe! But then he proceeded to get back on the bike, how cheeky is this, and rode away with the bikes. “He stole my road bike and our mountain bike. He’d jumped the fence and just thrown the bikes over the fence.” The family don’t currently have a home security system and Scott says their dog, who was outside, appeared to sleep through the whole incident. The Drage’s have since replaced their old picket fence with one that is higher and less easy to scale.

“About 20 minutes later she rang and said, ‘Someone’s just stolen our bikes.’ I said, ‘Call the police and make sure you’re safe.’ I rang a neighbour who raced over to see if my wife was okay.”

Targeted at Christmas

After hearing a noise coming from the yard, Scott’s wife Michelle had gone outside to investigate.

When she returned just 20 minutes later there were police officers in her driveway.

28

Julie Catherall had left her home late one afternoon to make a quick trip to her sister’s house.

In the short time she was away, Julie’s home had been broken into. It was just two days before Christmas and many gifts, along with jewellery, had been stolen. “There were two of them. They’d trashed the bedroom, took all the drawers out, they also spotted the house alarm and cut the cord which actually set it off. They also trashed one of my daughter’s rooms. “My neighbour heard some banging which he knew wasn’t normal. He saw a girl run out the front door with a bag of things and chased her.” Julie’s neighbour alerted police and then rang her. “It was just heartbreaking. They’d taken wrapped Christmas presents. I was absolutely gutted. I felt so violated that someone had been in my house. “I didn’t turn the alarm on because I was only going out for 20 minutes. Now I always turn it on whenever I leave the house. “We also now have a security camera, and a digital doorbell that records video. It alerts me on my phone when someone’s at the door, so I can answer it even if I’m not home.”

It was settled more than 170 years ago by Spanish Benedictine monks. Eleven monks still live a traditional life there of prayer, study and work. The monk-owned town also produces bread in a 140-yearold wood-fired oven. Signature New Norcia produce includes nut cake, biscotti and pan chocolatti, wines under the Abbey label, and gold medal winning olive oil. For more information, visit newnorcia.wa.edu.au

Guilderton Moore River

94km north

The meeting point of Moore River and the Indian Ocean, just over an hour’s drive north of Perth, has been an idyllic place for family getaways for generations and used as a camping and picnic spot since the early 1900s. “The thing that makes it special is having the estuary,” says Linda Johnson, a local and the visitor centre co-ordinator. “It’s very swimmable.” Water activities are at the heart of Moore River life, from swimming, kayaking and fishing to beach picnics and barbecues. For more information, visit guildertonwa.com.au

THE BEST

r oad Tr ips IN AUSTRALIA

From the rainforests of northern Queensland, to the wild Southern Ocean, we’ve taken a look at the best five road trips state by state, outside of WA. What’s the best bit of travel advice that never gets old? When you don’t know, ask a local. So, when looking for the best road trips east of the WA border, we asked our motoring club friends at RACQ, NRMA, RACV, RACT and RAA where they’d tell a friend to go on a driving holiday in their state. Here’s what they came back with.

Queensland 1. Pacific Coast Way

Brisbane to Cairns approx. 1810km This epic drive passes almost every beach along the east coast of Queensland. From Brisbane to Bundaberg stop at the Sunshine Coast, then from Yeppoon explore the Capricorn Coast, Southern Great Barrier Reef and Great Keppel Islands. Eungella National Park is a must-see where you can snorkel with platypus in the Broken River. Airlie Beach has plenty of opportunities for snorkelling

and scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef. Midway between Townsville and Cairns is the beautiful town of Mission Beach with World Heritage-listed rainforest on one side and the Great Barrier Reef on the other. From Cairns enjoy more of the Reef, visit a crocodile farm, and explore stunning Mossman Gorge.

2. Sunshine Coast Hinterland Brisbane to Montville approx. 140km

Escape to the lush rainforest of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. For history,

a chilled environment and nature, Woodford is a good place to stop. Travel the scenic route past Bellthorpe State Forest towards Maleny, a charming town known for its dairy produce and wineries. Take scenic walks through the Kondalilla National Park rainforest, where you’ll see rock pools and a 90-metre waterfall.

3. Savannah Way

Cairns to Adels Grove approx. 1495km This adventure takes you across the top of Australia. Wind west from Cairns through the rainforest and

over the Kuranda Range. A cruise though the magnificent Cobbold Gorge is a highlight. Drop a line in Burketown, the self-proclaimed Barramundi Fishing Capital of the World, and spend at least a couple of days at Adels Grove, soaking in the swimming holes.

Notable mentions 4. Big Red Brisbane to Birdsville approx. 1890km 5. Matilda Way Cunnamulla to Karumba approx. 1695km

South Australia 1. Flinders Ranges Parachilna to Hawker approx. 130km

This drive through the Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park is one of SA’s best. Brachina Gorge is flanked by escarpments torn open by erosion to reveal 650 million years of geological history. There are rocks patterned with ripples from a prehistoric inland beach. Adding to the scene are gnarled river redgums and native pines. Continue south towards Bunyeroo Valley, a pretty drive that leads to lookouts with spectacular views. Beyond that is the worldfamous Wilpena Pound

Horizons / June-July 2019

– a natural amphitheatre of mountains that should be on every Australian’s bucket list.

3. Marree to Marla

Although this route is unsealed in parts, there’s no need for a four-wheel drive if the weather’s fine. However, decent ground clearance is important.

This route has been used over centuries by Aboriginal people. The Oodnadatta station is now a fascinating museum relating the extensive history of the region.

2. Fleurieu Peninsula

Experienced four-wheel drivers can tackle the rattly track out to the Peake Telegraph Station ruins, and the extremely remote track from William Creek to Lake Eyre. To fully appreciate the enormity of the Lake, book a scenic flight.

Port Noarlunga to Cape Jervis - approx. 80km Port Noarlunga Reef is an aquatic reserve teeming with fish. From Moana, head south to a gorgeous stretch of beach at the base of the cliffs, then further south to Normanville - a popular seaside holiday town. Rapid Bay is the last coastal town before the descent from the ranges towards Cape Jervis reveals panoramic views of Kangaroo Island.

On the Oodnadatta Track - approx. 650km

Notable mentions 4. Gawler to Melrose via the Clare Valley and lower Flinders Ranges - approx. 230km 5. Port Lincoln to Ceduna via the Flinders Hwy approx. 405km

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Tasmania’s east coast, near Coles Bay; Table Cape lighthouse through tulips, Wynyard; Snug Falls is located in the pristine wilderness of southern Tasmania.

Tasmania 1. Sorell to Bicheno East Coast approx. 220km

As you wind your way along Tasmania’s eastern coastline, the rolling hills and farmland give way to white sandy beaches and turquoise waters. There are many places to stop and take in the views, wander along neardeserted shores, sample some of the State’s finest cool-climate wines and taste the freshest produce.

40

Take your time in this region as the roads can be tricky for those unfamiliar with their twists and turns. A visit to Freycinet National Park is a must – the pink granite of The Hazards Mountains is quite surreal and makes for some spectacular photos.

2. Wynyard to Marrawah

Via Boat Harbour and Stanley - approx. 140km Table Cape at Wynyard is a fascinating geological feature. Drive right to the top for views from the lookout. The beautiful beaches of

Boat Harbour and Sisters Beach are must-sees along this route, and you can stretch your legs through Rocky Cape National Park. The final leg through to Marrawah rewards you with stunning windswept coastline and surf breaks.

3. Margate to Huon Valley

With a side trip to Bruny Island via ferry approx. 150km The loop from Margate through the Channel to the Huon Valley is one of Tasmania’s prettiest coastal drives. Stop at Snug Falls

and Verona Sands and coming back up the western side of the peninsula, drop into Cygnet for a bite to eat or throw a line in the Huon River. And if you’re headed that way, jump on the ferry to Bruny Island.

Notable mentions 4. Burnie to Strahan including Waratah and Corinna approx. 300km 5. New Norfolk to Queenstown via Mt Field approx. 250km

As you negotiate its hairpin turns, the majesty of the mountain ash forest you’re enveloped in needs to be absorbed slowly. But go further and explore the other sites of Victoria’s highest road. Omeo is a well-preserved gold town. The descent to the Ovens Valley is short but steep and winding. Take a side trip up Mount Buffalo, with its array of wondrous rock formations, trails and panoramic views.

On this unique stretch of Victorian coast, you’ll have spectacular views of the Southern Ocean on one side and on the other, you’re against sheer cliffs. Round a promontory and you’ll dip into holiday havens such as Lorne and Apollo Bay. This region has the best waterfalls in Victoria. 2. The Darling River Run Lightning Ridge to Mildura approx. 1275km Kicking off in the quirky mining town of Lightning Ridge, this road trip follows the Barwon River out to historic Bourke where it meets the Darling, then follows its squiggly south-eastern journey down to Wentworth and its confluence with the mighty Murray. Wanaka

If you like your scenery big and your mountains bigger, then the Otago region on New Zealand’s South Island won’t disappoint. By Sharon Stephenson Located in the deep south of New Zealand’s South Island, Queenstown and its nearby siblings, Arrowtown and Wanaka, are pure Instagram bait. With the three towns all within a relatively short drive of one another, hiring a car or campervan will give you easy access to the region’s many wonders and also provide a good taste of the incredible array of New Zealand experiences, from spectacular lakes and mountains, to adventure activities, snow skiing, wineries and great local cuisine. The distances aren’t huge, so take your time on this drive and

Horizons / June-July 2019

experience the breathtaking natural beauty. Eat a famous Fergburger on the shores of Lake Wakatipu, discover why everyone falls in love with Arrowtown’s cute colonial cottages and take a million photos of the aptly-named Remarkables, the dramatic mountain range that dips and rises across the Queenstown skyline like a roller-coaster. There’s never a bad time to visit, with ski resorts open from late autumn through to early spring. But if snow sports aren’t your thing, there are plenty of summer-time activities,

including visits to wineries and stunning walking trails. Accommodation ranges from backpacker lodges to five-star resorts, and there’s a lot of it around, but given the popularity of this area, it’s useful to book at peak times. It doesn’t really matter whether you drive from Queenstown to Wanaka or vice versa - you’ll get the same spectacular views either way. But let’s assume you’ve just flown into Queenstown Airport and picked up your rental vehicle to start your trip with a few days in beautiful Queenstown.

45

T R AV E L

Queenstown You could plan an entire visit around this photogenic town on the banks of Lake Wakatipu. But in three or four days you can cover most of the major attractions. It’s not for nothing Queenstown has earned a reputation as the adventure capital of the world – it’s where bungy jumping was invented by AJ Hackett. But as well as throwing yourself off into the open space tethered by nothing but a rope, in Queenstown you can also go skydiving, zip-lining and even canyon swinging. If you’re feeling particularly energetic and have a day to spare, then hike to the top of Ben Lomond, one of Queenstown’s highest peaks. The seven hours of hiking will be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views.

By now, you’re probably feeling a little peckish, which is handy since Queenstown punches well above its weight when it comes to restaurants, cafes and bars. Try Yonder or Franks Eatery for tasty, healthy kai (food) or, if you prefer your meals with a side of scenery, then the Atlas Beer Cafe, on the edges of Lake Wakatipu, will deliver. A pleasant half-hour drive from Queenstown are the Gibbston vineyards. Sandwiched between rugged schist mountains and the rocky Kawarau River gorge, it might seem an unlikely place to produce award-

winning pinot noir wines (apparently, it’s got something to do with cold winters and hot, dry summers), but dozens of wineries are doing just that. While you’re there, check out the delicious washed rind and sheep milk cheeses the area is known for, and then drive to the Kawarau Bridge where you can watch bungy jumpers leap into space. Queenstown has long been popular with Australian skiers, drawn by its proximity to two ski-fields within a 45-minute drive – Coronet Peak and The Remarkables. Regular shuttle buses operate from the town centre, so leave the hire car at your accommodation and let someone else do the driving. And you can’t leave Queenstown without driving to Glenorchy. There’s

Edwardian vintage steamer has been ferrying tourists across Lake Wakatipu for years and is a quintessential Queenstown experience. The return journey takes an hour and a bit and, if you’re lucky, you can join in on an oldtime sing-along on board.

For those who fancy something a little easier, you can walk up Queenstown Hill and back again in two or three hours. Alternatively, follow the 45-minute trail to the top of Bob’s Peak and fill your camera’s memory card with photos of the snow-topped Remarkables and Lake Wakatipu, spread beneath you like a watery quilt. There are, of course, lots of less strenuous ways to spend your time in Queenstown. Tee off at the Queenstown Golf Course (though you might spend more time looking at the surrounding scenery than the fairway), or stroll around the sun-kissed hills or shores of Lake Wakatipu. Then get on the lake with a cruise on the TSS Earnslaw. This 107-year-old TOP: Vintage steamship TSS Earnslaw on Lake Wakatipu; BOTTOM: Gold miners hut in the Chinese Settlement, Arrowtown.

T R AV E L a reason this 45-minute journey, which takes in emerald lakes and bush-smothered hills, set against a backdrop of snowy mountains, has been called one of the most scenic in the world. Tip: allow more than 45 minutes, because you’ll want to pull over frequently to take photos.

Arrowtown From Queenstown, take the scenic route north-east, which passes through ridiculously picturesque valleys and farmland, under Coronet Peak and past the swanky Millbrook Resort. Twenty-five minutes later, pull into the historic village of Arrowtown. This small-but-perfectly-formed settlement has a fascinating history, dating back to the 1800s when it was a hub for gold mining. The Lakes District Museum turns the spotlight on this period, when the streets ran with gold. Check out the historic miner’s cottages, now repurposed as private residences, and visit the Chinese Village, where the huts of the Chinese miners drafted in to help with the gold rush, remain. If you’re so inspired, you can try your hand at gold panning. They take the ‘local food movement’ thing seriously in Arrowtown, and there’s no shortage of cafes and eateries where you can try the local produce and wine. One of the best is the Asian-fusion restaurant, Fan-Tan, named after the board game Chinese miners brought to the Otago goldfields. The menu ranges across Asia, with a Kiwi twist: pork and puha gyoza, rabbit and karengo wontons and a Buddha Bowl that will blow the cobwebs from your tastebuds.

Wanaka From Arrowtown, it’s a 50-minute drive over the magnificent Crown Range to the lakeside town of Wanaka. With the alpine backdrop of Mount Aspiring National Park, this town of 8000 is a little like Mary Poppins’ bag – more fits into its small dimensions than seems possible.

Horizons / June-July 2019

ABOVE: Wild lupin field along Rees River, Glenorchy.

In winter, Wanaka is a snow-lover’s paradise, with skiers and snowboarders enjoying two world-class ski resorts within 40 minutes’ drive – Treble Cone Ski Area and the Cardrona Alpine Resort. Those seeking a more relaxed mountain pace can head to New Zealand’s only crosscountry ski area, Snow Farm. The long, hot Central Otago summers are like catnip for lakeside campers and windsurfers, with boating of every form, including the jetboating that NZ is so well known for, taking place on Lake Wanaka and surrounding rivers. In both winter and summer, Wanaka is popular with hikers, mountaineers and those who simply want to take a stroll around the surrounding countryside. If you can, time your visit for the biennial Warbirds over Wanaka air show, which attracts numerous war aircraft from around the world. This three-day spectacular is a must for anyone with even a passing interest in aviation or history. As with Queenstown and Arrowtown, the dining is first class here, with a big emphasis on local produce. Wanaka

boasts award winning restaurants, wineries and breweries. Its artisan fare, alpine attractions and adventures, all wrapped up in one beautiful package, make it a perfect last stop on your deep south adventure.

EV’s other smart charging When we road tested the Hyundai Ioniq Electric earlier this year, we noticed a very clever but simple piece of design. Situated between the two front seats is the Ioniq’s wireless phone charging pad, which means you no longer have to fiddle with cables if you want to charge your phone. Big tick right there. Additionally, to use the charging pad, you must place your phone in a position such that you can’t see its screen while driving, because it’s facing forward. It means drivers aren’t tempted to gaze at the screen when a notification comes in. Smart work, Hyundai.

Volvo limits speed All Volvo cars will be limited to top speeds of 180km/h from 2020, with the car maker seeking to send a strong message about the dangers of speeding. Although 180km/h is well above any Australian speed limit, it will affect the faster motorways of Europe and has also started the conversation about manufacturer responsibilities in producing cars capable of very

high speeds. The move is part of Volvo’s Vision 2020 for no one to be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by 2020. As well as speeding, the company is focusing on other driver behaviour including intoxication and distraction. “The problem with speeding is that above certain speeds, in-car safety technology and smart infrastructure design are no longer enough to avoid severe injuries and fatalities in the event of an accident,” said Volvo.

Jimny’s star fades Suzuki’s baby four-wheel drive, the Jimny, has received a 3-star ANCAP safety rating, placing it well below the optimal 5-star rating which is carried by more than 90 per cent of all new cars sold in Australia. The Jimny does have appeal for its cute dimensions and fuel economy, but we’d recommend putting your safety first and looking elsewhere until its safety credentials are upgraded.

Horizons / June-July 2019

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Perth motor racing circuit now known as Barbagallo Raceway. Originally opened in 1969 as Wanneroo Park, this was a purpose-built facility as opposed to the old Caversham circuit in West Swan, which was originally an airfield built during the closing stages of the Second World War. Motor racing events were held there between 1946 and 1968. In March 1969, Wanneroo Park hosted its first race meeting. In 1997, it became the place where the late racing great Peter Brock won his last ever touring car race. More recently, it’s where WA-bred racing greats including Supercar racer Garth Tander, sports sedan driver Tony Ricciardello and Formula One ace Daniel Ricciardo have honed their skills.

Engine Features Safety Price

Specifications Engine: 2.0-litre petrol Power: 115kW @ 6000rpm Torque: 196Nm @ 4000rpm Claimed fuel economy: 6.6L/100km Price: fr $25,290 drive away ANCAP safety rating: 

Subaru Impreza The Subaru Impreza is not your typical small hatchback. For starters, it has all-wheel drive, and every variant in the Impreza range has it. No other small car offers that. Plus, unlike the all-wheel drive systems in some SUVs, all-wheel drive in the Impreza is engaged whenever the car is driven, and not just when the system senses extra traction is needed. Which is sometimes too late. The Impreza’s engine is also in the ‘flat four’ configuration, which is good for keeping the car’s centre of gravity low.

Horizons / June-July 2019

No other small car offers that either. The Impreza’s build quality is verging on premium. From the interior, road noise attenuation is good, and the materials used are high quality. If you can stretch beyond the base model, there’s an impressive list of standard safety features too. Subaru’s EyeSight system, which incorporates autonomous emergency braking, is not available on the base model 2.0i. For that, you’ll need to spend another $2100 to get the 2.0i-L. For that extra spend, you get other safety-related extras

including Subaru’s excellent active cruise control system, lane departure warning and brake light recognition, which alerts the driver when the car in front has moved away. It is good to see the Impreza only requires annual servicing, unlike other models in the Subaru range which require six monthly services. The Impreza also only requires 91 RON petrol, not 95 like some of its rivals, though it’s also slightly thirstier than some rivals. All Imprezas get a space saver spare tyre too. Impreza hatchbacks will cost $200 more than the sedan and even though its servicing is annual, it is still

more expensive to service than some of its competitors such as the Mazda3, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai i30. However, it’s great news Subaru has finally increased its warranty coverage for all its vehicles to five years. Its handling is safe and confidence-inspiring, though the engine could be more responsive to throttle inputs from standstill. Still, the Impreza is a unique proposition thanks to its all-wheel drive system, which offers class-leading levels of grip on wet and loose surfaces from a very affordable price.

Specifications Engine: 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol Power: 185kW @ 5000rpm Torque: 350Nm @ 1250rpm Claimed fuel economy: 6.2L/100km Price: fr $121,930 drive away ANCAP safety rating: not rated

BMW 530i This is the seventh generation BMW 5 Series, a model range which was once one of BMW’s most popular. Nowadays, SUVs are by far BMW’s most popular vehicle type. In fact, of the 21 different model lines offered by BMW, only seven of those are SUVs, and yet SUVs made up well over half of the total BMW sales volume in Australia in 2018. However, a large, refined and good-handling sedan or wagon can be a convincing antithesis to the SUV

52

onslaught. Take the BMW 530i for example. It corners neatly and accurately because its dynamics aren’t affected by the weight of four-wheel drive running gear and its centre of gravity isn’t affected by raised suspension and tall bodywork. The 530i sedan, which we tested, competes with the Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and to a lesser extent the Jaguar XF and Lexus GS. It’s also available in Touring guise, or to use the unfashionable generic term, a station wagon. As a more voluminous version of the sedan, the Touring is an

even more viable alternative to an SUV, especially as it’s $4000 cheaper than a BMW X5 30d. Under the 530i’s bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbocharged engine which makes 185kW and 350Nm. It’s very efficient and smooth, while its performance is more than adequate for the vehicle. The interior finish and design are what you’d expect of a car in this price range, and fine polished wood and metal trim finishes abound. It’s roomy inside too, and much brighter than the dour BMW interiors of years ago. Technology in the 530i

includes a system of four cameras around the vehicle which work together to construct a bird’s-eye view of the vehicle and its surroundings. It also has Intelligent Emergency Call, which activates when the vehicle’s airbags are deployed. The system uses an independent telephone unit in the car to automatically convey the car’s location and contact a dedicated Australian call centre for help. Then there’s the option of gesture control, which enables front seat passengers to turn up the audio volume by twirling their fingers in the air. Just be careful doing that in traffic.

Specifications Engine: 2.4-litre petrol Power: 129kW @ 6200rpm Torque: 225Nm @ 4000rpm Claimed fuel economy: 7.8L/100km (VTi-L) Price: fr $42,355 drive away ANCAP safety rating: 

Honda Odyssey Like a can opener or a 14mm spanner, people movers are very good at doing one job very well. Take the Honda Odyssey, for example. It doesn’t pretend to be an off-road-oriented SUV, and nor is it trying to be sporty, like many other SUVs. It’s just a big, ridiculously roomy and largely luxurious people mover which does that job very well indeed. The front seats are more like armchairs, with adjustable armrests and excellent comfort for longdistance cruising. Go for the range-topping

Horizons / June-July 2019

VTi-L, and you’ll get two captains’ chairs in the second row with built-in foot rests. The entry-level VTi gets three seats across the second row, but they’re regular seats. With three seating positions in the third row of seats, the VTi is an eight-seater. If you need more cargo room and less seats, the third row folds neatly into the floor. At normal driving speeds, the Odyssey is refined and quiet. It is a front-wheel drive, so the floors are flat with there being no need to run a propshaft under the floor to the rear wheels.

Around town, the Odyssey performs adequately, although when loaded with a family and their gear for a road trip, the 2.4-litre petrol engine’s power and torque limitations become apparent, such as when climbing a long hill or when overtaking. But for rolling around the suburbs, it’s fine. With the engine having to work hard on the open road, its thirst is about 9.2L/100km. Combined with the relatively small fuel tank (55 litres), this affects the Odyssey’s overall range. Though not usually a problem, on longer journeys it needs to be considered.

What should not be discounted is that kids absolutely love people movers because they’re easy to enter and exit, and when seated, there’s usually good space and ventilation around each kid. Feedback from the test kids (aged 12, 10 and 6) who tried out the Odyssey was that they liked the adjustability of the second row seats, the effortless electric sliding doors, and the easy access to the third row seats. The only addition we’d ask for is a sound-proof partition immediately behind the two front seats.

Specifications Engine: 2.0-litre petrol Power: 135kW @ 7000rpm Torque: 205Nm @ 4000rpm Claimed fuel economy: 6.8L/100km (manual 2.0*) Price: fr $48,110 drive away* ANCAP safety rating: 

Mazda MX-5 Although it looks largely the same as the 2015 Mazda MX-5, this 2019 iteration introduces the most changes the model has ever seen. The updated 2019 model brings with it the additions of autonomous emergency braking (AEB), a reversing camera, reach adjustment for the steering wheel and most significantly for enthusiasts, increases in power and torque. The MX-5’s previous lack of AEB had also become an increasingly glaring omission given the rest of the Mazda

54

range has it as standard, apart from the BT-50. Its rear camera is a goodto-have, especially given visibility can be limited when the roof is up, and sometimes with drivers sitting low in the car.

is 600rpm lower in the rev range and makes it easier to access. Mazda has always been cautious about giving too much power to the MX-5 for fear of ruining the purity of its driving experience.

But it’s the significant increase in engine outputs of the MX-5’s 2.0-litre engine that generated the most chatter among enthusiasts. The new 2.0-litre MX-5 now has 135kW, up from 118kW, while it also now has 205Nm of torque, up from 200Nm.

However, with its light and precise steering, and a suspension setup that actually allows the car to lean into corners to accentuate driving thrills, the addition of this new 2.0-litre engine magnifies the driver’s involvement.

While a torque increase of 5Nm isn’t much, it’s now also available at 4000rpm, which

Also, with that little extra flexibility, the revised engine makes the manual MX-5

slightly more manageable to drive in traffic because you’re not having to change gears as often. Ever keen on the details, Mazda has also made the seat adjustment levers more solid-feeling, taken some of the wobble out of the cupholders and made the mechanism which holds the doors open more userfriendly. By modern sports car standards, 135kW is still a modest output, but in the 1035kg MX5, it’s right on the sweet spot for driving fun. Along with the added safety gear, the MX-5 has grown up without affecting its fun factor one bit.

We have a manual 2008 Honda CR-V petrol in good condition. We are thinking of travelling in WA and not sure whether to tow a caravan or get a motor home. Would it be a waste to attach a tow bar on the four-cylinder car? To tour with a caravan, what size would suit the power of the car? Or, is it best to acquire a motor home to tour? Ralf, Viveash Unless you have a reason to tow other, much lighter loads than an average sized caravan, or have plans to get a larger vehicle, we recommend not going to the expense of having a tow bar added to your Honda CR-V. Your CR-V’s towing capacity for a trailer without brakes is 600kg, and 1500kg for a trailer with brakes. Its kerb weight is 1600kg. This, combined with all the equipment for your trip and the weight of a caravan on the open road, would be a lot of work for a small petrol

engine. With these factors in mind, as well as the cost of a caravan, we would recommend considering the alternative of hiring a campervan. Our car manual advises the correct air pressures for the tyres when cold and the load condition. Given the temperatures we experience here, by the time we get to a garage the tyres can be very hot. What allowance, if any, should we make when checking tyre pressure? Richard, Carine If you’re driving at a moderate speed over a minimal distance (up to 2km) to a service station to check tyre pressures, then pressure on the vehicle’s tyre placard (usually found in the driver’s door jamb, but also inside the fuel flap or on the glovebox door) should be followed. If you are concerned about heat in the tyres distorting pressure readings, for extra peace of mind, a good quality tyre pressure gauge can be purchased from any auto parts store. This will allow you to check your tyre pressures at home before driving and compare this to the readings you get at the

service station. Remember to check tyre pressures at least once a month, and preferably fortnightly. This will help you achieve the best compromise of grip, ride comfort, fuel economy and service life out of your tyres. RAC members are also eligible for discounts at Repco stores. In my son’s Toyota Yaris, when the air conditioning is turned on, water leaks from the passenger side where your feet are. Why is this happening? Deb, Lakelands While it is normal for a car’s air conditioning system to emit water onto the ground outside the vehicle, it’s not normal for water to be entering the cabin. It’s possible the drain which normally carries the water outside the vehicle is blocked, causing it to overflow in the ventilation system and into the passenger compartment. While it may be possible to locate and unclog the drain pipe inside the engine bay yourself, mentioning it to the technician next time the car is serviced may be a better option.

Squeeze more out of your car battery A flat car battery is an inconvenience all car owners face from time to time, but a good battery charger can help save the day. It’s a worthwhile investment.

Young driver workshops Keys for Life: A workshop for parents and young people is a program that was developed to help parents and their children learn to work together as a team during the process of learning to drive. Included in the program is a free workshop which covers the graduated driver training and licensing system, how to organise practice sessions and what to expect in the practical driving assessment. Each family receives a free pack providing essential information, checklists and a free set of L-plates. Bookings are essential. To register, visit rac.com.au/learntodrive or call RAC Community Education on 9436 4471.

Not all battery chargers are the same. Some chargers only offer simple charging with a constant charge that you need to manually monitor. Others offer trickle charging where a low current is supplied over a longer period, or timer-based charging where the unit recharges over a set time. The best type is a smart charger which detects how much charge is needed and stops when the battery has reached capacity. A good quality smart charger, like RAC’s battery charger, can help keep your battery in good condition and extend its life. If you find your battery keeps losing its spark even with regular charging, and assuming there’s nothing else wrong with the vehicle, it’s probably time to replace the battery. Older batteries at the end of their serviceable life are more likely to fail in very hot or cold conditions. To find out more about RAC battery chargers, visit rac.com.au/ batterychargers

To stay safe when charging:

 Battery gases are highly flammable and very toxic. Ensure you have plenty of ventilation and no open flames around you.

 Follow the specific charging instructions on the battery.

 Before you start, check the battery case for cracks. Don’t charge it if you find damage.

 If the battery has vents, check these are clear of fragments or other blockages.

 Always connect the charger to the battery before switching the charger on.

 Switch the battery charger off before disconnecting it from the battery.

 If the battery gets too hot stop charging immediately.

 Always use certified equipment like an RAC battery charger. This is essential due to advanced electrics in modern vehicles.

When you do need a new battery, call RAC 24/7 on 13 11 11 and we’ll deliver a new one within the hour* and safely dispose of the old one. *Within the hour service for Perth metro only

The next workshop 31 July 2019 6.15pm to 7.15pm RAC Head Office, West Perth Free parking will be available. Workshops are conducted in partnership with the Department of Education (Road Safety and Drug Education Branch) and are funded by the Road Trauma Trust Account. Crashing into history It was the evening of 6 June 1947 and Mr and Mrs Johnstone of Nedlands were travelling along Stirling Highway in their 1939 Singer 9 Tourer. There was heavy rain that night and in the difficult conditions, Mr Johnstone failed to see a car parked ahead of him and crashed into the back of it.

The car was insured for a total of £100 pounds and RAC Insurance paid out £29 on the claim – almost one third of the vehicle’s value.

His wife sustained some injuries and there was damage to the Johnstone’s car and the parked car, otherwise there was nothing unusual about this incident - but it was significant.

That was claim number one, lodged on paper forms with claim details handwritten.

The Johnstone’s crash that night was the first vehicle insurance claim ever made to RAC. RAC Insurance had just come into operation one week before the claim was lodged.

Over 72 years we’ve managed many more thousands of claims, getting West Aussies back on the road as soon as possible. One thing that hasn’t changed over those 72 years is that you’re still dealing with a local claims team. o find out how RAC Insurance’s T trusted motor cover can help you today and to view the PDS, visit rac.com.au/motor

Debugging your home security system False alarms from your home security system can be annoying to neighbours. Too many, and they’re less likely to react to a real break in when you’re not there. Did you know that false alarms can be caused by something as simple as a cobweb? Cobwebs and insects can be picked up when they move across the face of the sensor which could activate a false alarm. Periodically spraying the area around the sensors with an insect spray can prevent false alarms being caused by tiny intruders. Use a surface spray and ensure you don’t get any spray on the sensor as this can cause damage. Also keep the area around the sensor free of spider webs and the sensors free of dust by wiping them with a slightly damp, clean cloth. To find out more about how you can improve your home security call RAC Security on 1300 132 735 or visit rac.com.au/security We asked about community attitudes towards home security and householder’s experiences of burglary. I’m absolutely rapt with my new hearing aids

C CLINI LAZA P A L N O EL DIAN ENING SO OP

My name is Wayne Davis and I am retired now after a history of Army service followed by 39 years in the mining industry as a training

conversation because of my constant need for repeats of what was said. At times I still got the message wrong as anyone with a hearing loss will know that dialogue can be tough to understand if you aren’t in a perfect listening environment. Eventually Shelley got tired of being asked what she’d just said, which led her to cut out Brad’s ad from the paper and hand it to me.

machinery noise. I needed to hear better to really have a chance of enjoying my retirement. A few years ago I was they did me no good at all. I think a lot of people don’t like hearing aids because of this sort of poor experience. My partner Shelley is softly spoken, and our conversations continued as before with me asking her to repeat herself, which we both found pretty irritating. Also, I’d paid a lot of money for top-notch hearing aids, and I therefore assumed that they were giving me the best outcome I could expect with my hearing loss, but put simply, they really weren’t improving anything much at all.

Brad’s clinic, I haven’t looked back. both our lives. The aids are what I call “100%”. without the need for repeats, and I am absolutely rapt. And I want to say to anyone who has had a bad experience in the past with hearing aids to come to these people because think you’ll be sorry. Wayne Davis

Honouring those who were only 19

Veterans Remembered Watch 50th Anniversary Edition

“We would do anything for a mate… anything except leave him on the battlefield” They were the forgotten diggers. A generation of young men who fought for Australia like their fathers before them. But they returned as outcasts, casualties of a war nobody understood. Yet time heals the injustices of the past. Now they are heroes, as revered as the warriors of Gallipoli, Tobruk, Kokoda and Korea. The Bradford Exchange is proud to honour these brave diggers with a quality timepiece imbued with the spirit of the Anzacs that flows in their veins. Commissioned to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan, the “Veterans Remembered Watch” honours those who were only 19…

A Moving Achievement in Craftsmanship and Design As a bold salute to our heroes, this handsome chronograph is handcrafted from rugged stainless steel and intricately engraved with a wealth of icons associated with the war. Against the dramatic black and green face, the famous Iroquois ‘Huey’ chopper looms large and proud in a gleaming silver tone. The side is engraved with the words Sacrifice • Mateship • Pride and serve as a reminder that the courage of these men will always be appreciated. The reverse of the case is etched with a touching quote from veteran Gary McMahon, 6th Battalion RAA, recalling the mateship and courage which defined a generation of veterans.

Exceptional Value with Money-Back Guarantee The perfect way to show your pride, this magnificent watch can be yours for just 5 instalments of $55.99 or $279.95, plus $19.99 postage and handling, and backed by our 120-day guarantee. Strong demand is expected, so respond today. Send no money now. Just return the coupon or go online today at www.bradford.com.au/veterans

Animal adventures for the school holidays

Do you have an idea for The 10 Best? Send your suggestions to editor@rac.com.au

Caversham Wildlife Park

Caversham Wildlife Park has more than 2000 animals, birds and reptiles, and offers interactive animal encounters. You’ll see everything from echidnas, sugar gliders and Tasmanian devils to water buffalo. The park is located within Whiteman Park, in the Swan Valley.

Cohunu Koala Park

Koalas are the star attraction here but there are many other animals to see. You can even hand-feed some animals that roam freely around the park. Get a photo with a cuddly koala and jump on the miniature railway for a trip through the park, located in Byford.

Greenough Wildlife and Bird Park

For 30 years, Greenough Wildlife Park near Geraldton, has been rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing local wildlife. It also has many animals that now call the park home. You can visit the dingoes, cuddle an orphan kangaroo joey or even handle a snake.

Bunbury Wildlife Park

Home to more than 200 friendly, furry, feathered and scaled animals, including Merrick and Kaal the dingoes, Sherman the Wombat, and Psy the South West Carpet Python. Hand feed the kangaroos and wander through two large walkthrough aviaries feeding the birds.

Peel Zoo, Pinjarra

Peel Zoo has more than 100 species of birds and animals including koalas, wombats, quolls, dingoes, bettongs and the endangered Tasmanian devil. Spend the day and use the free barbeques in the picnic area.

82

Sleeping koala at Caversham Wildlife Park

Eagles Heritage, Margaret River Eagles Heritage is a wildlife and rehabilitation centre for eagles, hawks, falcons and owls. See flying displays twice a day and have a bird of prey sit on your arm. Most of the birds have permanent injuries and are unable to return to the wild but can be used for breeding and education.

Discover Deadly, Margaret River At this fascinating park you’ll learn more about some of WA’s most feared and mysterious animals and insects. Learn interesting facts about a variety of snakes, lizards and spiders, and how to stay safe in the bush.

Perth Zoo Open at the same site in South Perth since 1898, Perth Zoo has become a vital player in wildlife conservation in WA. Today, there are a huge

number of species and special visitor experiences, including animal close encounters and many special children’s activities and programs.

Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre

Kanyana is a dedicated rehabilitation centre for native wildlife where you can meet the animals and tour the hospital. As part of your visit you can also pick an animal to ‘meet and greet’ where you’ll get to touch or hold it. There are also night tours to meet the nocturnal animals.

AQWA

Have an underwater adventure at the Aquarium of Western Australia. See marine life from right along WA’s vast coast, from the cold south to the tropical north. As well as Australia’s largest walk-through aquarium tunnel, there are plenty of activities for children, including turtle feeding and the touch pool. RAC members receive discounts at AQWA.
