President’s message Smarter holiday planning with RAC Travel Between 2007 and 2018, the number of Australians travelling overseas annually almost doubled. Closer to home there is a groundswell of interest in ‘holidayingat-home’ and experiencing the wonders of Western Australia. But while the travel options are plentiful, coming up with the right plan can be quite an ordeal. RAC has more than 100 years of experience in tourism and travel services to members and is also WA’s leading travel agency, offering members access to a range of holiday options including cruises, international and domestic holiday packages, rail journeys, car hire, travel insurance and much more. RAC Travel has wider access to booking options than consumer websites, meaning they can quickly compare and secure the best deal. As industry experts, our travel agents also get exclusive access to pre-sale deals and special airfare offers, which they can pass on to you. As an accredited agency within the Australian Travel Accreditation Scheme (ATAS), RAC Travel operates to the highest standards, placing the needs of RAC members above all else. I would encourage all RAC members with upcoming travel plans to make the most of this valuable service by allowing our experts to create a just-for-you, unforgettable trip that removes the guesswork from your next getaway.

If you are planning to drive overseas, it is essential to prepare for the challenges of navigating another country’s roads. Before leaving, familiarise yourself with local road rules and conditions, including which side of the road you will be driving on. There’s a good chance you’ll also need an International Driver’s Permit (IDP). When hiring a vehicle overseas, your Australian Driver’s Licence is not always enough to legally drive. For a small fee, an IDP allows you to drive overseas without further tests or applications and includes translations in nine different languages. RAC is the exclusive provider of IDPs in Western Australia. You can apply for an IDP at an RAC member service centre or online at rac.com.au/idp. RAC Travel has seven convenient locations in Applecross, Carousel, Joondalup, Mandurah, Midland, Morley and West Perth. RAC members can save between 10 and 30 per cent on a range of travel and leisure activities and attractions year-round. Call 1300 655 179 or visit rac.com.au/travel. As I finish my term as President, I would like to thank our members and my Council colleagues for their
support and the great honour to serve as RAC President for the past three years.
RAC President
I would also like to thank everyone at RAC for their dedication and commitment to the delivery of services to members.
RAC Council
During my term it has been wonderful to experience so many highlights. These include the organisation continuing to grow to one million members in WA, delivering innovation and great service, investing in new strategies including tourism parks, and speaking out on behalf of the community in areas of critical importance such as road safety, a better share of transport funding, and providing more options and choice to move around our State. I am pleased that my term also included a seamless transition of the Group CEO role from Terry Agnew to Rob Slocombe who will continue building RAC’s future for our members. While the future will be guided by an external environment of continual change, RAC is well placed to navigate its path.

Testing time on the roads I loved the letter from Lulu Langford (Horizons August/September). I have been a driving instructor for 20 years and what she describes as experiences with her learner drivers is what instructors see almost every minute of every day on the roads, whilst instructing and on our own also. People tell me that learners drive too slowly yet they are more often doing the speed limit, and most other drivers simply do not care about posted speed limits, or 50km/h built up areas. My personal opinion is that 98 per cent of licensed drivers would fail the current PDA if they had to re-sit their driving test. Rina Gem
I don’t think the average motorist is qualified enough to teach their children how to drive so why not make it compulsory for every learner to go to a driving school where they also teach them about good driving habits. Alan Jackson
Daytime headlights I often see cars, sometimes even trucks, in varying lighting conditions and at different times of the day, that are almost camouflaged. Factors reducing visibility include misted windows, time of day (dawn/dusk), sunlight flickering through trees and dark coloured cars camouflaged into the background. Sometimes
@racwa @racwa editor@rac.com.au Sign up to receive RAC’s For the Better enews rac.com.au/racenews
the combinations of these states compound the problem of visibility. Some studies have shown that after the introduction of mandatory daytime headlights for motor bikes there has been a reduction in accidents. I’m sure the same would apply with other forms of road transport. With lights on, that extra split second of time may be enough to save a life or injury. John Cox

RAC President & Group CEO
Combined report It is our pleasure to provide the 2018/19 financial year report. RAC Group revenue for the year ended 30 June 2019 was $819.1 million with an overall profit after tax of $23.2 million. The total net assets of the Group as at 30 June 2019 increased to $886 million. Importantly, and in line with the organisation’s values as a membership-focused organisation, RAC members received more than $55 million in direct member benefits - the largest savings ever. It is also pleasing to report over 50 per cent of members are now using the RAC Member Benefits program which has grown and expanded to become one of the most comprehensive initiatives of its kind in WA. The 2018/19 financial year has seen RAC focus strongly on maximising the services and support it provides to more than one million members in WA, while also shaping the organisation’s future to explore new and exciting opportunities. RAC continued its 16-year partnership with the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) and was appointed again as the exclusive naming rights sponsor for Western Australia’s fleet of emergency rescue helicopters. Based in Perth and Bunbury, the RAC Rescue helicopters1 perform over 700 lifesaving rescue and medical missions each year and provide a lifeline for our community in times of need, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. With the majority of missions being in response to road crashes, RAC’s partnership with this critical and life-saving service is a key part of the organisation’s commitment to road safety in WA.
Horizons / October-November 2019
Strategic initiatives have also been progressed and delivered. Through the Parks and Resorts strategy the new and improved RAC Monkey Mia Resort redevelopment was unveiled in late 2018. The $20 million redevelopment is the most significant upgrade in the venue’s 40-year history and has almost doubled the capacity of the world-class resort from 600 guests to approximately 1000. With accommodation now available at multiple price points, there is more opportunity for members and the community to now experience a world-class tourism destination. In addition, the acquisition of RAC Cable Beach Holiday Resort was also finalised, and the $5.7 million redevelopment of RAC Karri Valley Resort, the first in over two decades, has been a major focus since it was acquired over 18 months ago. Operating in a commercial and competitive environment has also seen RAC’s businesses invest in protecting and enhancing member services on the road, in the home, and along the member journey. RAC bstreetsmart, a free road safety re-enactment, was also held at RAC Arena this year and it was pleasing to see 9000 Year 10-12 students attend. This is the largest audience for RAC bstreestmart which has been held at this venue every year since 2013. In addition, road safety education was also provided to over 15,000 primary school students and almost 30,000 secondary school students. RAC’s world leading automated vehicle trial in South Perth continued this year with the vehicles now travelling more than 20,000 kilometres on public roads since August 2016. This year an exciting and new partnership with

the City of Busselton also delivered the first driverless experience on public roads in regional WA. We acknowledge the support of the WA Government, and the Australian Government through its national Smart Cities and Suburbs program. We would like to recognise RAC Councillors for their ongoing commitment and acknowledge over 1400 people working within RAC. Their workplaces are diverse, their skills continually on display, and their commitment to members unwavering. To all RAC members, thank you for your support. The support provided by members is captured in the very core of RAC’s existence, its social purpose. It is this purpose that has built a history and will drive the future. News in brief from the RAC and beyond
Six safer ways to work on your car:
Safety concerns with DIY car repairs Being crushed under vehicles that have been unsafely raised off the ground was the most common accident that resulted in fatalities during DIY car maintenance, according to a report from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. 12
Other risky DIY car maintenance activities involved fuel tanks or fuel lines and the use of power tools. If you carry out car maintenance and repair work at home, always ensure you follow correct safety procedures and use appropriate equipment. Home vehicle repairers should never get under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Support stands or ramps and wheel chocks that are fit for purpose should also be used. For more information along with safety videos, visit productsafety.gov.au/ diycarsafety
Always perform vehicle
maintenance on solid, flat ground. Never get under a car that is only supported by a jack. Use a trolley jack to lift the car and then lower it onto support stands. Always use support stands or ramps along with wheel chocks that are fit for purpose. Never exceed the weight capacity of the jack. Apply the handbrake and put the vehicle in gear or in park.

Country versus city fuel prices Why do fuel prices vary across different locations in WA? Fuel pricing is a complex topic but there are some factors that can generate noticeable differences in fuel prices depending on where the fuel is being sold. The cost of transporting fuel over greater distances is one reason, but there are several others. Fuel pricing in regional areas is also heavily influenced by factors such as reduced competition from nearby retailers and lower turnover of fuel stocks. These can result in less downward pressure on regional fuel prices and less fuel volume to spread profit across.
The petrol price cycle is also not active in regional areas, meaning prices can be more stable outside Perth, but sometimes higher. More broadly, fuel pricing is also affected by changes in international benchmark prices, the value of the Australian dollar relative to the US dollar, and pricing decisions by wholesalers and retailers.
Sometimes there is enough competition in certain regional areas to drive average prices below those in some metro areas.
Making sense of car parts For most owners of modern cars, typically it’s their mechanic who sources and fits the parts for their car. The choice will vary with the type of parts needed, and the age and model of the car, but when your mechanic calls to explain what you need, it pays to have some knowledge of your options to make an informed choice. Genuine parts are made either by the vehicle manufacturer or by suppliers making parts to their exact specifications. These are called original equipment parts or OE. Non-genuine parts are made by other parts manufacturers and are close to the original part but not the exact specifications. There is a perception that genuine or OE parts are the best choice, but
this isn’t always the case. Aftermarket parts may be of the same or better quality and also cheaper. There are, however, some parts designed to look like OE parts which are counterfeit and of questionable quality. These are often marketed online directly to consumers and are potentially dangerous when in use. Reconditioned parts can be a good choice if there is no new part available, and they usually come with a warranty. Used parts can also get you out of trouble where there is no other option, but their warranties will not be comprehensive, if they have any at all. Still, a used OE part could do the job just fine and reputable vehicle workshop will be able to make a judgment about this.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF
PERTH’S TRAINS AND BUSES We take a look at how Perth commuters get around on our public transport network, when they travel and where they’re going, on a typical weekday. If you’re on Perth roads between 7.20am and 8.20am on a weekday, you’re in the thick of the city’s peak period traffic. During that single hour, our bus and train services are shuttling the equivalent of approximately 23 freeway lanes of traffic across the city – or around 50,000 cars.
of vehicles and people each day but being able to see beyond the numbers and understand the patterns of use, the trends and the quirks is essential in helping to create a better transport system.
Centre to undertake a project to ‘visualise’ a typical day in the life of Perth’s public transport system. Our animated visualisations show an average weekday of public transport use in motion, using anonymous data provided by the Public Transport Authority from the Transperth SmartRider ticketing system.
By the end of the day, those services would have seen around 360,000 boardings.
Increased investment in Perth’s public transport will be critical if we are to meet the demands of our growing population, which is expected to hit 3.5 million in Perth and the Peel region by 2050.
Understanding how Perth commuters get around is essential in helping those who plan and manage our roads and transport networks to improve the efficiency of the whole system, making our journeys easier and more reliable.
It’s difficult to visualise just how much is going on during the ebb and flow
In 2018, RAC commissioned the Planning and Transport Research

BAD CAR HABITS 10 habits you should break to help save your car
Horizons / October-November 2019

MOTORING
Most modern cars provide good reliability over tens of thousands of kilometres provided their servicing is kept up to date, they’re not driven abusively, and they get some basic checks in between. But there are some bad driving habits you should also break to save your car from an early retirement. Here are 10 habits to avoid to help get the most from your car. Shifting from drive to reverse while still moving forward (and vice versa) Doing this gives your car some very mixed messages. Given the forces involved in trying to make a car’s major mechanical parts turn in the opposite direction to which the car is travelling, it’s poor practice to do this with any vehicle. In older automatic vehicles, engaging reverse while the car is still going forward (at any speed) could damage the transmission and is potentially dangerous. In manual transmission cars, attempting to select reverse while the car’s moving forward will either cause a crunching sound or the gearbox will have a lock out mechanism which prevents reverse from being selected. Just use the brakes, come to a complete stop, then select the appropriate gear to change direction.
20
Coasting downhill in neutral Strictly speaking, this won’t damage your car, but what happens while coasting down a hill in neutral does have its pitfalls. In some modern cars you’ll use more fuel coasting in neutral than if coasting with a gear engaged. If no fuel is needed to keep the engine turning (such as when going downhill with a gear engaged), some cars can shut off the fuel supply. So, coasting in neutral usually uses slightly more fuel. Selecting neutral when descending a hill also means you can only control your car by braking, which means less control to adjust your speed or even to avoid a crash. Never turn off the ignition while the car is moving.
Running your car with a low amount of fuel in the tank Regularly running your car’s fuel tank to very low is not a good idea for several reasons. Firstly, the fuel pumps in some modern cars are inside the fuel tank and they’re designed to be cooled and lubricated by the fuel in the tank. Running your tank down to almost completely empty could damage your car’s fuel pump over time. In older cars with steel fuel tanks, regularly running them low may increase the potential for condensation to cause corrosion.
Clutch isn't a footrest Manual transmission cars are becoming less common as automatics take over, but if you still drive a manual it’s worth paying attention to what your feet are doing. Drivers prematurely wear out the clutch when they rest their foot on the clutch pedal while driving. This partially disengages the clutch and allows the flywheel on the end of the engine to rub against the clutch’s friction material without fully engaging with it. Excessively slipping the clutch, such as partially engaging it to keep the car stationary on a hill, will also get the clutch to the end of its life much earlier.

MOTORING
Too much hard braking
Incorrect tyre pressure
Unless you’re going down a very steep hill, regularly using the brakes hard is a sign you’re either accelerating too hard or not paying enough attention to traffic or both. While the brakes on modern cars perform incredibly well when properly maintained, they will wear more quickly when used heavily. Smooth acceleration and braking will not only make your brakes last longer, it will encourage you to save fuel and keep you and other road users safer. Also, braking and accelerating heavily and sharp steering movements are used by some high-tech cars to signify a driver is suffering fatigue.
Previous surveys conducted RAC found that more than one quarter of the cars on our roads could have tyre pressures that are incorrect by 10psi or more, while a UK survey has shown 62 per cent of cars had the wrong pressures by any margin. A car’s only contact with the road are the tyres. If they’re under-inflated or over-inflated they can’t do their job properly. Keeping your tyres at the right pressure will help you save fuel, make your car handle better and most importantly, keep you safer.
Missing car services In the long term, regularly servicing your vehicle according to the car manufacturer’s schedule is the best way to get the most out of it for minimal cost. Doing this will maximise the car’s durability and minimise the chances of an unexpected repair bill. Not having your car serviced at the right time can lead to the formation of oil sludge, which can eventually cause catastrophic engine damage due to the sludge blocking oil pathways. Servicing your car on time could save you money, while giving you peace of mind that the car’s servicing is up to date. Safety and other mechanical checks are also part of a service.
Horizons / October-November 2019
Revving your engine while it’s still cold Revving your car’s engine when it’s not properly warmed up will cause unnecessary engine wear and burn fuel needlessly. While modern cars are designed to be driven immediately after a cold start, they also shouldn’t be revved excessively when cold. Immediately after a cold start, your car’s engine oil is yet to reach its operating temperature, and the oil is also yet to reach its optimal circulation. Just start the engine, and let it settle to a fast idle before you drive away.
Driving too fast over speed humps Speed bumps are designed to slow you down. Driving too fast over them is dangerous and sends an uncomfortable shock through the car. Doing it regularly accelerates wear of the car’s suspension components such as shock absorbers, rubber bushings and ball joints. It also has the potential to throw the car’s wheel alignment out of adjustment. Speed bumps are there for a reason and going over them too fast raises the risks to you, your car and other road users.
Not driving your car at all Cars are designed to be driven regularly. Regular driving warms up the engine oil and coolant, the brakes and the exhaust system, which delays deterioration and helps water to evaporate from areas where it shouldn’t be. Regular driving also keeps your battery in good condition. Tyres can become misshapen if the car rests on them without moving for extended periods. Cars don’t like running on old fuel either, so keeping fresh fuel moving through your car will help avoid difficult starts and thick deposits clogging the fuel system, as well as reduce the chances of water getting into the fuel which can cause corrosion.

THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME How will we accommodate Perth’s growing population over the next two decades? By Ruth Callaghan
Horizons / October-November 2019
23
O U R S TAT E
By 2050, an estimated 3.5 million people will be living in the Perth and Peel regions. Keeping our city liveable into the future will mean striking the right balance between increased housing diversity and density, and protecting the things that make a place feel like home. It took 180 years from the development of the Swan River Colony for the population of the Perth and Peel regions to reach two million people. But in just 30 years from now, it is expected another 1.5 million will be added to that count. The widely cited estimate is that 3.5 million people will be living in Perth and Peel by 2050. How do we ensure Perth can grow to meet that demand without losing the things that make our local neighbourhoods great places to live? It comes down to working with the community on building a more compact, connected city that works for everyone in it.
Our sprawling city Greater Perth already stretches 120km from Mandurah to Yanchep and has a footprint comparable to Los Angeles with a fraction of its population.
Our newly-built homes remain the second biggest in the world, with the average home 30 per cent bigger than 30 years ago. Three out of five of those homes is being built on the urban fringe, threatening the remaining 29 per cent of vegetation on the Swan Coastal Plain. And this leads to unpleasant side effects, from the creation of an urban heat island that traps summer heat, to the loss of ground water and possible species extinction. Sprawl is also expensive in terms of infrastructure and inefficient for moving people and goods. The negative impacts of urban sprawl on people’s daily lives, such as traffic congestion and increased travel times, are becoming more apparent, says Sarah Macaulay, RAC senior manager public policy. “We know congestion and long commutes are having an impact
BELOW: Leederville’s mix of heritage homes and modern apartments is centred around the Oxford Street hub; RIGHT: RAC’s survey showed support for higher density developments around the CBD, such as in East Perth.
on people’s lives and lifestyles. To manage congestion, we need to look to high-impact strategies,” she says. “And that includes better urban planning. Because the way our cities and towns and communities are planned greatly influences where we live, work and socialise, and how we move around.”
Community attitudes A recent RAC survey asked those living in the Perth and Peel regions what they value in their local neighbourhoods and their views about urban planning issues. It found more than half think urban sprawl negatively impacts them and their community. A quarter believe sprawl increases congestion and commuting times. But views are mixed when it comes to limiting the expansion of the city through development of greenfield land around the fringes and concentrating growth in existing urban areas. The survey revealed 55 per cent of residents felt a greater amount of urban infill development should be built in existing areas to help manage congestion across Perth. But there was still strong support for single homes on single lots, reflecting WA’s ongoing preference for detached housing. However, there was also support for more housing diversity and choice, including medium density developments of between one and four storeys in appropriate areas, including around train stations, shopping centres and smaller suburban activity centres. Higher density apartment buildings were considered most suitable in and around the CBD and major activity centres. There was less enthusiasm for such developments in other locations. So while there was support for infill development of increased densities, residents wanted them limited to specific areas. There was also a generation gap.
24
October-November 2019 / Horizons
O U R S TAT E
Asked where they would like to live next, Generation Z respondents (born mid-1990s to mid- 2000s) were nearly four times as likely to say an apartment appealed to them as their next home — 43 per cent, compared to an average 14 per cent for older generations. Macaulay says the survey results echo the need to deliver the right kind of housing at the right scale in the right areas, and transport had to sit at the heart of such considerations.
The struggle is to find a way of increasing density without people feeling like they are losing what they love. “Most planning experts agree that higher density residential and mixeduse infill developments should be focused around activity centres, which are vibrant hubs where people work, shop and socialise, and should be supported by quality public transport,” she says. “We’re not talking about high-rise apartments, everywhere. We need more housing diversity and choice, to suit the needs of local communities, with access to essential services,
Horizons / October-November 2019
amenities and transport options nearby, so people don’t have to rely on their car for all journeys.”
Rethinking higher density living But can we have density, while preserving the things we love about our local areas? The RAC survey found people tend to associate the term ‘density’ with overcrowding and many have concerns about potential negative impacts, such as increased traffic on local streets and noise. Yet for some, higher density areas are attractive places to live because of access to transport options and local amenities, such as shops, cafes and restaurants. A good example is Leederville, with its distinctive small blocks on leafy streets and a mix of heritage homes and modern apartments, centred around the shopping and restaurant hub of Oxford Street. The suburb consistently makes the list of Perth’s most walkable, liveable and fast-selling areas. But keeping the character of Leederville alive amid high demand for dwellings is a challenge — one being tackled by the community and business group Leederville Connect.
Vice chair of Leederville Connect David Galloway says the group’s goal is to retain and enhance the character of Leederville as an ‘urban village’ and incorporate new development. “For 10,000 years, the high street was the place where human interactions happened. Then we had 100 years of cars and now 20 years of digital connection, so we don’t have to actually connect with real people any more. “Despite that, we see an increasing desire for human connection and interaction,” Galloway says. Leederville Connect works with developers and government to drive designs that encourage human connection, support local work, and provide public spaces to meet and connect. “We need more emphasis on what developments are creating at street level and how these buildings connect into the surrounding environment,” Galloway says. “You need to think about what a community needs in terms of social infrastructure, from things like libraries, to kindergartens, all the way through to where you put your park benches so that people can sit,” he says.
25
O U R S TAT E
Building to match the way we live Another challenge is how we get smarter about the way we increase density and match housing options to meet changing household compositions. Leederville, with its 2.1 people per household, is a good example of a suburb where the housing stock aligns with the demographics. More than 85 per cent of homes have three bedrooms or fewer, and 43 per cent have only one or two. Scoot down the freeway to Atwell in the City of Cockburn, though, and 75 per cent of homes have at least four bedrooms, making it one of the lowest density areas in Perth. The City of Fremantle is one area that has engaged the community to identify changes in household structure and options for more housing diversity, and then accommodated this through their planning process, including allowing more homes on a smaller footprint. “Household sizes are getting progressively smaller everywhere but at the same time the size of the houses
being built is getting bigger,” says Paul Garbett, director of strategic planning and projects at the City of Fremantle.
the change as an opportunity to build on a history of small home experimentation in Fremantle.
“We’ve got a lot of big, four-bed houses still being built on subdivided blocks, which uses the whole block up, resulting in a loss of all the greenery.”
“There’s a need for a real mix of housing types and no single housing type is going to suit everybody.”
The struggle, he says, is to find a way of increasing density without people feeling like they are losing what they love — a challenge the City has addressed with some special planning controls for housing lots bigger than 600sqm. “We will let you build three houses rather than two, but the deal is they must be small houses and we strictly control the maximum size of the house to 120 square metres, which is the typical size of the early post-war house.” Each dwelling must have a minimum of 30 square metres of outdoor space and 60 to 70 per cent of the entire development site must be retained as open space, with at least one mature tree kept or planted. The rules have only been in place since March, Garbett says, but he is heartened by the reaction of local architects who have used
Engaging the community Macaulay says the RAC’s survey has underscored how important it is to engage the community to understand their concerns and ensure density is done well. “More than half of our survey respondents said they would like to get involved in planning for their local area,” she says. “Planning and development decisions have a major impact on local communities and people need the opportunity to have a say and be involved in the process at appropriate stages. “If residents feel involved and they have a say in how their local area is being shaped, it can help create a sense of place and foster greater community spirit,” she says. “Then you start moving the conversation from not in my back yard to demanding quality in our backyard.”

s k n a h t s ’ Family x TO RAC RESCUE CREW By Wendy Caccetta
The Protzman family were on their way to dinner when an ordinary day came to a sudden and traumatic end. It was a Sunday afternoon in April when the Protzman family set off to have dinner at a local restaurant in Oldbury – just a short 15-minute drive from their home in semi-rural Byford, about 47km south-east of Perth. Rochelle Protzman, 38, a primary school teacher, and her husband Steve, 39, a painter, had spent the
day at a pony club with their three young daughters who were then aged between six and nine. Steve was driving their Nissan Patrol four-wheel drive along familiar Soldiers Road about 5pm when their dinner plans came to a frightening end. As they approached the Bishop Road intersection in Cardup, Rochelle, who
was in the front passenger seat, remembers seeing a tow truck coming towards them from the side road on their right and showing no signs of stopping. She says her husband veered to the left to avoid it, but the truck clipped the back of their car, sending it into a spin and putting it on a collision course with a tree on the opposite side of the road.

“It was like slow motion,” Rochelle says. “I remember seeing the car coming, saying ‘Watch out’ and looking at my husband and him focused, hands on the wheel, and the next thing I looked straight ahead and there was a tree in front of us. “My husband said he said a prayer and we looked at each other and that was what goes through your head. I looked at him, looked at the tree and thought we were gone.” The Nissan Patrol hit the tree head on and the Protzmans were later thankful for its sizeable bull bar. Rochelle was knocked unconscious and next remembers the air inside the vehicle thick with dust from the airbags. “Steve was shaking me,” she says. “He thought I was dead. The kids were screaming in the back seats. “Steve said there was crap everywhere and the engine had come into our lap. There were car parts and metal and airbags and chaos in the car. “When I came to I found it hard to breath, but Steve says he thought ‘Good, she’s alive’.” Steve carried his bleeding wife from the car and quickly retrieved the children. Another motorist stopped to help. Both sets of grandparents lived close by and
Horizons / October-November 2019
were soon at the scene as were some locals, the police, two ambulances, a fire engine and an RAC Rescue helicopter, which landed on the oval of nearby Court Grammar School.
Meanwhile, daughters Shaylah, then 9, Aaleyah, 7, and Savannah, 6, were transported to Perth Children’s Hospital (PCH) in ambulances, accompanied by their father and grandmother.
“I kept asking for my kids,” Rochelle says. “People kept telling me ‘Your kids are okay’, but I hadn’t seen them. And they thought mummy was dead because all they saw was me lying by the side of the road with a rug over me.”
At SCGH, Rochelle was treated for a broken sternum and ribs and luckily escaped internal injury.
“ Our story does have a happy ending.” The RAC Rescue helicopter’s crew of four that evening included St John critical care paramedics Chris Gleisinger and Chris Oakes, pilot Craig Bowman and aircrew Garth Fitzgerald. “Logistically it was quite a difficult scene because there were a number of children who all had injuries plus Rochelle herself who was injured,” Chris Gleisinger says. They decided to airlift the seriously injured Rochelle Protzman to Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) — a trip that took about 10 minutes by air but by road could have taken more than an hour.
She was released at her own request the next day to be with her daughters. Her husband was treated for a broken toe and released the same night, spending it at PCH where Shaylah was treated for whiplash and friction burns. Aaleyah had a broken wrist and a laceration and Savannah was treated for concussion and a fractured sacrum. Rochelle says she’ll always be thankful to the RAC Rescue helicopter crew and for the decisions they made that night. “We want to let them know how much we appreciate them and what they do,” she says. “Our story does have a happy ending.” For the crew the good outcome is the upside of a rewarding job. A number of the crew recently met up with the Protzmans — the first time they had seen the family since the crash. The two RAC Rescue helicopters, based in Bunbury and Perth, are sponsored by RAC, funded by the State Government and managed by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES).

POWER OF ONE THE RISE OF THE SOLO TRAVELLER By Wendy Caccetta
With holidays-for-one a growing trend, we look at how lone travellers are being catered for and meet some Aussies who are happy to be rolling solo. Janice Waugh and her husband had always travelled together, but when he passed away in 2006 and their children had left home, she became a solo traveller. Not finding the support she wanted online, she launched her own resource and has become an international expert in the art of holidaying alone. Today her Solo Traveler website has readers around the world and its Solo Travel Society Facebook page has nearly a quarter of a million followers.
Horizons / October-November 2019
She says travelling alone has well and truly thrown off any stigmas. “The continued growth of solo travel has surprised me somewhat,” says Toronto based Waugh. “It continues to be identified as a travel trend year after year.”
Who’s travelling solo? According to Tourism WA, just over two million overnight leisure visitors within and to WA last year travelled solo. Most were West Australians (72 per cent), 18 per cent were
international visitors and 10 per cent were from other states. And the authority says the number is on the rise. Since 2014, solo traveller numbers have grown an annual average of 2.6 per cent, with almost half of all international travellers, a quarter of interstate visitors, and 21 per cent of locals going it alone, a WA Tourism spokesperson says. The biggest percentage of solo travellers (41 per cent) are aged 15 to 34, followed by the over 55s (33 per cent) with those aged 35 to 54 accounting for 26 per cent. Women are also just as likely to travel alone as men, with Tourism WA figures showing the sexes evenly matched.

Catering to solo travellers
The sisterhood of the travelling vans
The Rollers travel in everything from luxury glamper vans to cars with tents.
As the number of solo travellers continues to grow, the industry has begun to respond.
One of the most visible solo traveller trends has been on our roads.
Each year the women set out from the far corners of Australia for the main event on their yearly calendar, Stuck in the Middle, a weeklong gathering held in different bucket-list destinations.
Specialist travel agencies and group tours have sprung up specially tailored for those planning a holiday for one. Some tours and cruises have begun to waive costly single supplements — the premiums charged for solo travellers when they take a room alone — or keep them to a minimum. Others have rooms or cabins which solo travellers can share with other lone travellers to keep costs down. Like other travellers, Waugh says those travelling alone are looking for a full range of experiences from adventure to culture to food and wine. Many simply like the freedom of travelling on their own. “The difference is whether people want to join a tour or go completely independently,” she says. “About half of solo travellers choose to travel in a group on some trips.”
Four years ago, Sydney mother and grandmother Michelle Lang, 45, started a Facebook page for women who share her love of camping and enjoy taking to the roads on their own. Today Rolling Solo Australia has 2000 members who keep in touch through their own app, providing camaraderie and support to each other. Lang has plans to take the network to New Zealand. “I don’t know if there are just more women on the road travelling, or more are coming out of their shell because they are seeing other women travelling,” she says. “I guess our group has a big flow on effect. Once they hear about it they say, ‘I can’t believe there are so many women into the same thing as me’. “I think camping has changed for a lot of people. It’s Australia’s holiday now and it’s something women aren’t scared to do on their own.”
“So long as you’ve got that fire in your belly to get out there and meet new people that’s probably the best way to get started.” This year about 320 Rollers will journey to Exmouth where they’ve booked out RAC Exmouth Cape Holiday Park in October for an itinerary that includes everything from fishing to jujitsu and even ‘bogan bowling’. The group includes lawyers, nurses, office workers and housewives. Some are single, others widowed, and some have partners and husbands. Most are aged 50 to 84.

“Enthusiasm is probably the biggest thing for a Roller,” Lang says. “Many people don’t have campervans or caravans. They just have a little tent and a little car. So long as you’ve got that fire in your belly to get out there and meet new people that’s probably the best way to get started.”
Sole mates Barbara Dyer, a 62-year-old journalist from the Gold Coast, became a Roller in July last year. She plans to be on the road for six months this year having rented out her home and left her partner behind. She sees a trend towards women choosing to travel alone, whether they are in relationships or not. “I think that women naturally bond — to friends, family, to their homes. I guess the freedom to now bond on the road when family is no longer a commitment is a relatively new and pretty exciting phenomenon.” Fellow Roller and recently retired nurse Alex Williams, 61, eventually hopes to hit the road full time. She has sold her Queensland home and has her eye on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter motorhome.
Horizons / October-November 2019
Williams says she’s always loved camping, but after this year being diagnosed with cancer is even more determined to live life to the full. The Coolangatta resident booked a flight to Perth and a campervan to drive north to Exmouth in a tagalong of eight vehicles. “I’m single, a lot of ladies aren’t single, but we travel solo,” she says. “The ladies are beautiful. They are supportive. We’re like sisters.”
From small beginnings Back in 1997 the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia recognised solo travellers when it started its Solos network. It now has chapters across Australia named after different birds which have 900 male and female members, including Perth grandmother Margaret Jordan. Jordan, 72, says friends “thought I was nuts” when she announced nine years ago that she wanted to buy a kombi van to travel in. Her main motivation was her then six-year-old grandson who she wanted to grow up with a feel for the country and camping. She bought a 2005
Volkswagen that had been fitted out and on one of their first trips to the Marrinup campsite near Dwellingup she met two other women who were on their own. Jordan joined their Western Willie Wagtails group — whose oldest member is 100 — and she’s never looked back. Her first trips to bush camps with her grandson have grown to include solo journeys across Australia and monthly trips within WA, where group members meet up and share food and company. “People are always a bit surprised,” she says. “I don’t understand why they are.”

Mansions of the sea Worried about getting cabin fever on a cruise ship? Don’t be. On many of today’s mega-ships you can spread out in suites that have multiple rooms and even multiple levels. The range of cabin types available on cruise ships can be mind boggling, eye opening and sometimes confusing, so here’s a guide to some of the more common and some of the more surprising cabin types. An inside cabin with no window is usually the smallest and cheapest. Outside cabins can also be small but have a window or porthole, while obstructed view cabins have a window which is partially covered by a structure on the ship, like a lifeboat.

As the name suggests, balcony cabins have their own private balcony, and cabins referred to as suites are larger and often have separated sleeping and living areas.
So, they’re the basic cabin types. From here on, things get trickier and more interesting. On some cruise ships you can have a butler cabin with your own private butler to look after you. Some windowless inside cabins now come with a ‘virtual balcony’ – a screen which displays a moving view of the outside of the ship. Some suites are like miniature mansions at sea and can include dining rooms, games rooms and luxurious bathrooms with spas. On Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas, their Ultimate Family Suite even includes an in-suite slide for the kids to play on and table tennis on the balcony. Cruising has come a long way and with many cruises lines trying to outdo one another on the ‘wow factor’, now is a good time to look at jumping on board. SIX UNFORGETTABLE
station stays IN WA By Fleur Bainger
Western Australia’s vast outback stations offer a unique travel experience and the chance to spend time on a working property in some of the State’s most stunning and remote locations. For city dwellers it can be difficult to appreciate the scale of WA’s sprawling station and farming properties. The total size of some are equivalent to small countries.
Tourism Western Australia
Hidden within those boundaries are some incredible natural wonders, authentic outback experiences, trueblue country folk, peace and tranquillity. If you’re keen to get a look inside, many WA stations are now opening their doors to share those experiences.
An outback station stay can be an antidote to our overpacked lives, elevated by the characterful individuals who manage to juggle farming enterprises with tourism, happily sharing the places they treasure - places we’d never otherwise see. Here are six incredible station stays in WA to set your GPS for.
ABOVE: Wooleen Lake at Sunset, Wooleen Station

Home Valley Station and El Questro Close enough to stay on one property and daytrip to the other, these two Kimberley cattle stations each have oodles of rugged red outback at their fingertips, dotted with ancient rocky gorges and waterholes. Each station also has a friendly, communal vibe that extends to occasional live music at sundown in each of their station bars. Home Valley Station is the younger of the two and is owned by the Indigenous Land and Sea Corporation and partly staffed by Aboriginal people. It covers nearly 250,000 hectares and hosts an Indigenous training facility. Cattle are run separately to the tourism operations and guests may or may not get to see an annual muster.
40
El Questro, meanwhile, harbours a more dramatic landscape within its nearly 300,000 hectares and also keeps its cattle apart from visitor facilities. What to do: Fishing, walking trails, sunset tours, helicopter adventures, gorges, billabongs, bird watching and four-wheel drive trips. El Questro also has thermal springs and horse riding. When to go: April to October. Accommodation: Home Valley has hotel-style suites, guesthouse rooms, raised eco tents and camping. El Questro offers full-board homestead accommodation, cliff-side villas, bungalows, raised eco tents and camping. Getting there: Home Valley Station is 120km west of Kununurra along the Gibb River Road. hvstation.com.au or elquestro.com.au
Wooleen Station Restoring the Murchison’s fragile ecology is at the heart of this pastoral station. Sheep and cattle have been destocked so that today’s custodians can nurture the land that’s been grazed since 1886. The rehabilitation journey is readily shared with anyone staying on the 150,000-hectare property. It has been open to tourism since 1993 as a way of reducing the reliance on livestock. Guests come away inspired and informed on the delicate conservation methods being employed. Staying in the circa 1918 homestead, which is listed by the Australian National Trust, grants an insight into the daily lives of the couple who run the property, David and Frances Pollock.

In 2019, Wooleen Lake bed has water in it – a rare event, with adequate water only coming once every four years. May rains made the wetland a hotbed for migratory birds, frogs, turtles, fish and crustaceans, while spring wildflowers covered the land this season. What to do: Land regeneration education, wildflower walks, canoeing, wildlife watching, four-wheel drive adventures, mountain bike trails, walk trails, sunset tours, stargazing. When to go: April to October. Accommodation: Full-board homestead accommodation, selfcontained guesthouses, nature camping with fire pits. Getting there: Drive nearly 300km north-east of Geraldton. wooleen.com.au

Quobba Station The contrasts within this working pastoral station are as dramatic as the eroded rock platforms that fisher folk perch on, hoping to hook game fish for the night’s dinner. Inland, the landscape is parched, rough and ready, while on Quobba’s coast, the southern tip of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Ningaloo Reef Marine Park glints beneath the waterline. The property was established in 1898, with the Meecham family taking care of it for the past 40 years. Its 10,000 damara sheep roam over 35,000 hectares and farming continues around visitors, who can observe it if they’re staying on the homestead grounds. Those who want to recreate actor Chris Hemsworth’s holiday earlier this
42
year might lash out on a safari tent complete with wooden floor and real bed. These fancy abodes line a speck of Quobba’s 80km of rugged coastline at Red Bluff and lend themselves to a more aquatic getaway.
Mount Elizabeth Station
What to do: Surf, fish, swim, snorkel, relax, whale watch, go four-wheel driving, see the blowholes.
The outback gem came to life in 1945 and is one of the Kimberley’s longest-running cattle stations. It now stretches across more than 200,000 hectares, allowing visitors space to recharge and explore.
When to go: Good to visit all year round. Accommodation: Station cottages, shearer’s quarters, bush camping with powered and unpowered sites, and, on the property’s coastal stretch, unpowered fishing shacks, seascape bungalows, safari-tent style chalets and camping. BYO water and fuel. Getting there: One-hour drive north of Carnarvon. quobba.com.au
This working station is surrounded by two epic gorges, creeks harbouring freshwater crocodiles and grounds dotted with wallabies.
Tackle a challenging four-wheel drive journey in low range to Wunnamurra Gorge and be rewarded with seasonal waterfalls and ancient Aboriginal rock art paintings. Otherwise, take the easier 10km road to Warla swimming hole, where green water contrasts with the region’s characteristic sun-baked red rock and pale, sandy edges.

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: Quobba Station is a working pastoral station on the coast north of Carnarvon; The boab tree is a Kimberley icon and part of the landscape of the North West's big stations; Cheela Plains Station owner, Robin Pensini; Mt Elizabeth is one of the Kimberley’s longest-running cattle stations.
Throw in a line then return to chill out in the homestead garden and meet other travellers around the campfire. What to do: Splash in gorges, gaze at waterfalls, observe wildlife, go on four-wheel drive adventures, admire Aboriginal rock art, watch the operating cattle business. When to go: May to September, subject to weather and access. Accommodation: Basic dinner, bed and breakfast homestead accommodation (some ensuite, some shared facilities, all air conditioned), camping. Packed lunches available. Getting there: You’ll need a four-wheel drive. Find the station 30km off the Gibb River Road, with the turn off 340km east of Derby and 365km west of Kununurra. mtelizabethstationstay.com.au
Horizons / October-November 2019
Cheela Plains Station Cheela Plains is so big, you rarely see any evidence of the 3500 head of cattle that graze the 188,000-hectare property. While it’s very much a working station, keeping livestock numbers low to allow the rangelands to regenerate is a major focus at Cheela. One of the more unexpected inhabitants is Robin Pensini, a Texan woman who came to Cheela in search of work experience a few decades ago. She met her now-husband Evan, and despite her initial impressions, fell as much in love with the Pilbara as she did with him. “He had long hair, sleeveless shirt and bellbottom pants and I thought oh my gosh, who is this person?” she remembers.
Make sure you scale the hill by the station accommodation at sundown for endless views, and drive to The Wall, where you’ll find vertical slabs of rock that are jagged like a Game of Thrones altar. What to do: Four-wheel driving adventures, gorge walking, river swimming, bird watching, sunset lookouts, stargazing. When to go: April to October. Accommodation: Basic, air conditioned rooms with shared amenities, a 15-site station campground and nature campsites. Home-style dinners available. Getting there: Cheela Plains is 90km north-west of Paraburdoo and about a 550km drive north-east of Carnarvon. cheelaplains.com.au

Driving Europe Your guide to renting a car in Europe, plus five great European drives. Always wanted to get behind the wheel to explore some of Europe’s great drives? With no end of iconic driving routes, a self-drive European adventure can give you a more authentic travel experience, with the freedom to discover some hidden gems along the way. It also means you can travel at your own pace without being limited to bus and train tables. To get you on the way, we’ve got five classic drives and some important tips on car rental to make sure you get the best out of your European road trip.
By Susan Gough Henly

Five classic European drives These drives are easy to navigate and offer spectacular landscapes and cultural experiences. 1. Estoril Ocean Drive (National Road 6), Portugal 70km Highlights: Rugged coastline with phenomenal beaches and dense forests; the architectural splendour of UNESCO-heritage listed Sintra; the fishing port of Cascais; Praia de Rainha and Guincho beaches. Best direction to drive: Start in Lisbon and drive along the spectacular coast before heading to Sintra. Accommodation: After the drive, stay at one of Sintra’s atmospheric hotels. Best time to go: Lots of sunshine yearround so you can do this drive any time of the year. Summer is always busier.
2. L es Corniches (The Cliff Roads), France Roughly 30km on each road Highlights: There are not one but three Corniches, which run parallel to each other and the Mediterranean Sea: The Grande Corniche was built by Napoleon I along the ancient Roman Via Julia Augusta 150 metres above the Mediterranean, the Corniche Inferieure hugs the coast, and the Moyenne Corniche between the two is one of the world’s most scenic roads. Each offers a remarkable journey along the Cote d’Azur. The best direction to drive: Drive from Nice to Menton on each of these roads so you are closest to the view on the right-hand-side of the road.

Accommodation: Several hotels in the hilltop village of Eze are worth the splurge. ABOVE: Villefranche-sur-Mer bay, Cote d’Azur, France.

Best time to go: Spring, summer and autumn are the best times, but the route is feasible year-round.

The ins and outs of car rental in Europe Renting a car when you’re travelling in Europe gives you the freedom of going where you want when you want, but there are some things you need to be aware of to make the journey smoother. International Driving Permit: An International Driving Permit is essential. Many car rental companies won’t let you hire a vehicle without one and your insurance may be invalid in the event that you have an incident while driving. For WA drivers, IDPs are only available through RAC. You can organise one easily online at rac.com.au/idp Prepay: Book and pay before you leave to lock in your rate in Australian dollars and avoid overseas transaction fees on your credit card. Don’t just turn up at a car rental desk and expect either to get a good rate or in fact any car at all, especially during July/August high season.
they are not up to date and often don’t show recent construction and traffic problems. Here WeGo (wego.here.com) is an excellent free App. Pick up: It is easier to pick up cars at airports, which are removed from the heavy traffic of large cities. They are also open longer hours (major airports offer 24-hour collection), generally cost the same and have the widest car selection. Many city/town rental agencies close on Saturday afternoons, Sundays, and at lunch time. A grace period for drop-off is approximately 1 hour. One-way rentals: These can be expensive. Consider doing a loop trip to avoid covering the same ground twice. Chat with a local car rental specialist before booking as the charges vary with countries and companies. One-way rental between countries is possible but the fees, which may differ between suppliers, tend to be very expensive. The greater the distance between start and end points, the higher the fee, generally.
Insurance: Most fully prepaid car rentals cover the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Third Party Insurance. You can get rates exclusive of insurance but you’ll pay a lot more at the counter upon pick-up. Check your credit card coverage and personal travel insurance to ascertain whether either covers the excess charges and thus the full cost of any claim. If they don’t, pay to reduce the excess, even though it will be expensive. Personal Accident Insurance covering accidental death and medical coverage of renter and passengers and Personal Effects Coverage (PEC) are generally covered by your personal travel insurance but it’s always a good idea to check your travel insurance company’s Product Disclosure Statement.
To get your European driving holiday on the road, contact RAC Travel on 1300 655 179 or visit rac.com.au/travel
Car models: Don’t waste time choosing specific cars as you will only be guaranteed a similar model. In Europe, the cars are smaller and moreoften-than-not manual transmission. If you need automatic transmission, you’ll pay a premium and must book early as supplies are limited. Use soft luggage to fit more bags into a smaller boot. You’ll be glad of a smaller car in the generally narrower streets across Europe. Rental rates: In Europe, each company and country has its own price breaks but the daily rates go down the longer you rent the car. GPS: Some rental cars come with satellite navigation built-in, which is great since the maps are right in front of you as you drive, however, sometimes ABOVE: Santa Marta Lighthouse and Museum in Cascais, Portugal.

The latest news from the motoring world
Wrangler warning The current model Jeep Wrangler has received a dismal 1-star safety rating from the independent vehicle safety agency ANCAP. This was the first time a vehicle had been awarded 1 star since the Malaysianbuilt Proton Jumbuck ute back in 2010. According to ANCAP, in the crash test, the Wrangler’s passenger compartment did not retain its structural integrity and structures in the dashboard were a potential source of injury for both the driver and passenger. Protection of the upper legs was rated marginal. We’d recommend consumers steer well clear of it. Around the same time, the new Toyota Hiace van received a 5-star rating, as did the new Nissan Leaf.
Beetle squashed
Fuel sipper surge It’s been a busy year in Australia for the launches of new electric cars, hybrids and plug-in hybrids. Toyota launched a hybrid version of their ever-popular RAV4 mid-sized SUV, Subaru is intending to launch a hybrid Forester in late 2019, and Mazda will be launching its ultraeconomical Skyactive-X compression/ ignition petrol engine around the same time. Hyundai also launched its Kona Electric small SUV back in March, and Land Rover even launched a plug-in hybrid version of its Range Rover Sport. This means more motorists are more likely to find a low emissions car that suits their needs while also generating some competition between car makers.
Horizons / October-November 2019
There was much fanfare when the Volkswagen Beetle went out of production back in July. But for many true enthusiasts, the Beetle party was over well before July, because that final model was based on the running gear of a Golf Mk 6. This meant it had its engine in the front, was front-wheel drive and liquid-cooled. It was the close of production of the original air-cooled, rear-engine Beetle in 2003 that really tugged at the heartstrings of many, given that basic design had been in existence since 1938.
Your car service rights When you buy a new car, there’s a good chance you’ll be encouraged to bring it back to the dealer for its scheduled servicing. Many motorists do that because they believe they must to retain their vehicle’s factory warranty, and some do it to optimise its resale value. In fact, you don’t have to have your car serviced at the dealer to maintain its factory warranty and it’s against Australian Consumer Law to make dealer servicing a condition of full factory warranty coverage. Providing your car is serviced on time by qualified staff, according to the manufacturer’s specification and using appropriate quality parts where required, the warranty will remain valid.

We’ve fallen on our feet coming here
From the time I was a young child, my hearing wasn’t perfect. I recall when the district nurse came to our school, she used a stop watch at arm’s length to assess our hearing, and I didn’t pass that test. Nevertheless, I wasn’t aware that I had an actual hearing loss. My wife Norma is a priest and has a soft voice, and I counselled her that if she wanted to present sermons, she’d have to speak up. (Incidentally, Norma wears hearing aids as she needs to hear what parishioners are talking about.) But I kidded myself that I just had selective hearing. I had to admit though that I did have difficulty hearing one of my daughters on the phone, as well as the granddaughters. As Shire Council President between 2007-2017, I couldn’t hear what the women councillors were saying. In general I couldn’t hear women’s voices and I became aware that at times people thought I was arrogant because I didn’t respond. Norma would let me know that someone had been talking to me yet I hadn’t acknowledged what they were saying: that was because I didn’t know they were speaking to me. I have been wearing hearing aids for 13 years and still wasn’t
hearing well! I guess what really pushed me was that I’d been on the Dowerin Field Day’s Board for a number of years and there are generally quite a few women involved with that. It was challenging when we had meetings. With the airconditioner going, I struggled to hear what was said, and this made it very difficult for me to participate. The enthusiasm with which friends spoke about their new hearing aids, prompted us to pursue a change. With these new aids I can definitely keep up with and be involved in the discussion, whereas previously I was guessing a lot of what people were saying. I didn’t realise how much I had been missing, with the previous hearing aids. The new background noise suppression programme is amazing! It makes a big difference to acknowledge you have a hearing problem so you can do something about it. It’s been marvellous finding Melanie, and both Norma and I feel that we’ve fallen on our feet coming here. So if you think you have a hearing problem, don’t leave it too long because you could lose the ability to sort out the noise from the discussion. Don’t wait. Dale & Norma Metcalf

Suzuki Jimny Clearly, the Suzuki Jimny is an over-achiever when it comes to appeal. Just look at it. But with a 3-star ANCAP safety rating, it’s an under-achiever on the safety front. The Jimny lost marks in the crash test because, among other things, insufficient pressure in the airbag caused the test dummy’s head to hit the steering wheel, and the passenger compartment lost structural integrity. The Jimny’s ANCAP rating came at a time when more than 90 per cent of new cars sold in Australia have five-star
Horizons / October-November 2019
ANCAP ratings. That’s a pity, because apart from its dismal safety rating, the Jimny is fun to drive, affordable, excellent off-road and has plenty of cool, retro style. In the rough stuff, the Jimny’s short front and rear body overhangs give it wide approach and departure angles (meaning you’re less likely to scrape the front or rear of the car when traversing lumpy ground). Meanwhile, its short wheelbase (meaning the front wheels and rear wheels are relatively close together) helps reduce the likelihood of scraping its underbelly.
Rigid axles and low gearing help it climb over obstacles at low speed. However, on the highway its little 1.5-litre, 75kW petrol engine is revving at over 3000rpm at 100km/h, so cruising isn’t a strong point. Around town, frequent gear changing is recommended for keeping up with traffic but the Jimny somehow makes that fun. Though its short wheelbase and bouncy tyres mean its handling resembles that of a bobcat. But all these features make the Jimny a wantonly jaunty, raucous and rugged lowcost bundle of fun. Take it virtually anywhere off road, and hilarity will ensue.
That’s further enhanced by the Jimny’s boxy, toy-like styling, chunky dashboard design and the delightfully long-throw manual gear lever. As a vehicle type, the Jimny is also rare. With a separate transfer case, a ladder frame and excellent wheel articulation, it’s a true fourwheel drive, in miniature. Almost all the other small SUVs the Jimny competes with have on-demand allwheel drive systems, if they have all-wheel drive at all, and suspension designed for sealed roads. If only the Jimny also had the added appeal of an acceptable safety rating.

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid
pect of the new Toyota RAV4 Hybrid that makes it stand apart from these: its price.
Given how much Australians love their SUVs, you might be surprised to learn that until this year, there were no affordable hybrid SUVs available in Australia.
The new RAV4 Hybrid starts from $39,390, making it more than $10,000 cheaper than the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. The RAV4 is also $21,000 cheaper than the similar-sized Lexus NX300h, although this competes in the luxury SUV segment.
Now though, there are and this one wears the badge that took hybrids from oddity to normality – Toyota. Hybrid SUVs are nothing new – the Lexus NX and RX ranges, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and those of some other luxury brands have been around for several years. But there’s one very important as-
52
There are other luxury examples, but as an affordable hybrid SUV, the RAV4 has the segment almost completely to itself. You can get the RAV4 in front-wheel drive and twowheel drive. Within these two divisions are front-wheel drive
hybrids and all-wheel drive hybrids spread across three main model grades: GX, GXL and Cruiser. There’s also a 2.5-litre petrolonly all-wheel drive model called the Edge. This runs through a conventional eightspeed gearbox instead of the CVT transmission that’s on most other variants (there’s a six-speed manual available on the base model). The new RAV4 has a roomier boot than the previous model (it’s 65mm longer) and it’s now the biggest in the class, while rear legroom is up by 40mm. Families will have no trouble getting a folding pram in there with room to spare, while
youngsters will be easier to install into child restraints. The front-wheel RAV4 GX Hybrid two-wheel drive is an appealing mix of space, affordability and fuel efficiency. But it is noticeably less sure-footed on slippery road surfaces than the allwheel drive versions and as a GX, it does miss out on roof rails, dual zone climate control and wireless phone charging. After driving the front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive hybrids, plus the Edge variant, our pick for safety, affordability and equipment is the GXL all-wheel drive hybrid, which costs $46,019 drive away.

Specifications Electric motor: Permanent magnet synchronous motor Battery type: Lithium-ion Polymer Battery capacity: 64kWh Power: 150kW Torque: 395Nm Electric driving efficiency: 131Wh/km Price: fr $64,700 drive away ANCAP safety rating
Hyundai Kona Electric When the Hyundai Kona Electric arrived in Australia in March 2019, it became the cheapest way to get an electric car with a driving range of more than 400km – it’s claimed range is 449km to be exact. The Kona costs $64,700 drive away, which is ridiculous for a small SUV and simultaneously quite reasonable for an electric car that can travel so far without needing to be recharged. Go for the range-topping Kona Electric Highlander
Horizons / October-November 2019
variant, and you’ll need to shell out $71,000, which will bring a sunroof, electric front seats, a wireless phone charging pad, a head-up display, ventilated seats and other frippery that’s nice but not essential. Given the Kona Electric’s significantly reduced need for cooling, most of the front grille has been replaced by a flat, patterned panel – another big hint that this car hails from Electric Avenue rather than Gasoline Alley. The rear of the Kona has an “electric” badge in case there’s any doubt. As the only fully electric small SUV in the market currently,
one of the Kona Electric’s closest competitors in terms of price and driving range would be the Tesla Model 3. The cheapest Tesla Model 3 (the ‘Standard Range Plus’ variant) retails at $66,000 in Australia, making it $6000 more than the entry level Kona ($59,990 before onroads) and yet the Tesla has a 34km shorter range. Sure, these are different vehicles in many ways, but in terms of range-for-dollar, the Kona Electric makes a very strong case. One of the best developments in electric cars in recent years has been in the use of paddles behind the
steering wheel to adjust the rate of braking regeneration, which affects how quickly you slow down before the brakes are applied. There is no need to change gears in an EV, so using the steering wheel paddles for this in place of their roles as gear shifters is a clever way of involving the driver and harvesting some of the car’s kinetic energy and returning it to the battery. The Hyundai Kona Electric isn’t cheap, but its 449km range is huge for this price point and that makes it one of the most important EVs currently in the Australian market.
53
Specifications Engine: 5.7-litre petrol Power: 270kW @ 5600rpm Torque: 530Nm @ 3200rpm Claimed fuel economy 14.4L/100km Price: fr $158,050 drive away ANCAP safety rating not rated
Lexus LX570 If a Lexus LX570 passes you on the road and you don’t notice it, you really should pay more attention. It’s longer and heavier than a Toyota Landcruiser 200 Series and it has a front grill that looks ready to suck up anything in its path. The LX570 is also based on the current Toyota Landcruiser. Apart from the cosmetics, the main difference is Lexus gets a 5.7-litre petrol V8 instead of the 4.6-litre V8 petrol that’s available in the Landcruiser.
54
As of March this year, the Lexus LX can now also be had with the Landcruiser’s excellent 4.5-litre V8 diesel, which is far more economical than the petrol V8. That one’s called the LX450d. Regardless of whether you’re in the LX570 or the LX450d, both engines have a lot of weight to shift given the vehicle weighs about 2.7 tonnes. We tested the petrol V8, which while smooth, needs to spool up to 3200rpm to reach its maximum torque of 530Nm. By comparison, the diesel only needs to rev to 1600rpm to pump out more torque (650Nm).
Inside, switches and handles have soft and grippy surfaces, while non-moving touch points are cool, luxuriously smooth surfaces. Switches and buttons move positively, and the interior is a serene, high-riding cocoon. The interior’s only drawback is the joystick-like controller for the infotainment system which lacks precision and is fiddly, distracting and downright annoying to use. We reckon Lexus is capable of a better solution. With its significant mass and height, the LX570 isn’t at its best on sealed urban roads. We only road tested the petrol, but we’d recommend
prospective buyers also try the diesel for a different and potentially better driving experience. The diesel’s cheaper too. The LX570 really does shine off road. Ironically, it shines in environments that will probably take some of the paint shine off it, and given its price, many owners may be deterred from taking roads less travelled. While the LX570’s capabilities may not be fully explored by many owners, there’s no doubting the sheer presence on the road of this huge luxury fourwheel drive and for many, that will be enough.

While driving my Hyundai i30 along Tonkin Highway, my windscreen suddenly became obscured by some kind of fluid. My dashboard instruments showed normal so I believed the fluid had come from another vehicle or the [road] surface. Some days later I lifted the bonnet and found the engine bay coated in the same fluid. Where could it have come from? Richard Hopkins It sounds like there’s been a leak from under your car’s bonnet, so we recommend having your vehicle checked. There are several possible sources of the fluid and importantly, it could be leaking from systems directly related to your vehicle’s safety, such as the hydraulic fluid in your car’s braking system or the power steering system. Checking fluid levels while the car is hot may be dangerous and may not provide a clear indication of the true levels of some fluids. Sometimes damage is done before signs of a problem show up on the dashboard - another reason to ensure your vehicle is thoroughly checked.
We have a 2008 Kia Magentis and the problem is the airbag warning keeps lighting up. Every time we have it serviced, we have it fixed. There is a switch under the driver’s seat and each time we move the seat we disconnect the switch which results in the light being on all the time. We cannot afford to keep paying to have this rectified. I have been quoted a minimum of $300 to have the seat taken out, then it would be extra to find the fault and then more to fix it. Any ideas how to get it resolved? Gail Wright Going by the information from your mechanic, it sounds like the problem has been isolated to the seat. This has been a common issue with some Korean-built cars of this age. If that is the case, this can be repaired so the airbag light doesn’t continue to create these false alarms. It would be reasonable to expect a good auto electrician to have previous experience with this sort of problem. Rather than a general mechanic, get the advice of an experienced auto electrician and explain
you’re on a tight budget but are concerned about the safety issue this fault presents. I am being quoted $585 by a Hyundai dealer to replace front brake pads and rotors on our Hyundai i40. The car is six years old with 63,000km on the clock, driven mainly around Busselton. I do five trips to Perth each year, with no hard driving. Why have the rotors not lasted? Is this usual and does the quote seem excessive? Roger Marriott It’s not unreasonable for brake rotors to require work or replacement after this distance. However, for peace of mind, we recommend getting at least two other quotes from a vehicle workshop other than the dealer. This will provide alternative pricing and may also provide a second opinion about the urgency of the work. You can then decide on where and when you have the work done.

Road tripping with your dog If you can find the right accommodation in WA that’s pet-friendly, taking your dog with you on holiday can often be easier than finding a pet sitter or sending it to a boarding kennel. If you are considering taking your dog road tripping with you these school holidays, make sure they travel safely. In a crash or even when braking heavily, a dog that’s unrestrained and gets thrown in a car can become a dangerous projectile risking serious injury to the animal and other occupants. Just as you need a seatbelt to stay safe on the road a dog should also be safely restrained.
58
Letting your dog roam freely while you drive is a dangerous distraction and driving with a dog in your lap is against the law. There are three ways to keep your dog safer while in the car: lace it in a pet crate that is P anchored in the car. Make sure it’s big enough for your dog to stand up, lie down and turn around in.
se a harness that’s attached U to an existing seatbelt. I n an SUV or four-wheel drive, keep your dog behind the cargo barrier. In a large cargo area, a secured harness is also a good idea to keep the dog safe. And remember to make plenty of stops along the way to give everyone a break from the road.

Storing your car before holidays If you’re heading off on holiday and leaving your car behind, make sure it’s stored correctly so it’s in great shape when you get back. Ideally don’t store it at all – get someone to drive it. Once a week for about 30 minutes should be enough, but if that’s not possible and you’re away for two or more weeks, here are some things to keep in mind before you leave your car idle: ark on a flat surface, use suitable P wheel chocks under all four tyres and release the handbrake. This is to prevent the brake friction material from fusing to the rotor (or drum) after a sustained contact period. onsider connecting a smart battery C charger, such as RAC’s Smart Charger, to deliver just the right amount of charge to the battery to prevent it from going flat. he ideal storage environment is a T covered and enclosed carport with good ventilation. If your carport is not enclosed, consider protecting the car with a good quality car cover.
WIN
car which can be seen from the A street to be in storage may bring unwanted attention to the car and the property, so keep it out of sight, if possible. For periods longer than four weeks, raise the car so the tyres are not touching the ground and use axle stands for support. The weight of the vehicle on tyres left in the same position for a prolonged period can damage them. If you’re away for more than a month, leave a minimal level of fuel in the tank so when you fill up, the older fuel will be diluted with fresh fuel. Whether you’re storing your car or taking it with you, make sure the servicing is up to date before you go. Long gone Perth cinemas
Do you have an idea for The 10 Best? Send your suggestions to editor@rac.com.au
Shaftesbury Picture Gardens Open air cinemas were popular during the early 1900s in Perth. The Shaftesbury was a semi-open-air theatre at 49 Stirling Street and opened in 1911 with around 2000 seats. Though initially a dedicated cinema venue, some years after it opened it began staging live vaudeville shows complemented by films. It was demolished during the 1950s.
King’s Picture Gardens Located on William Street near the Perth Esplanade, Kings Picture Gardens opened in 1908 and was one of the first Perth venues purposebuilt to show moving pictures. Kings Pictures also conducted screenings at venues in Midland, Fremantle and some regional towns. It became Spencer’s Esplanade Gardens in 1911.
Pavilion Theatre The 1000-seat Pavilion Theatre opened in 1914 at 709 Hay Street, Perth. At the time it was one of the city’s growing number of enclosed hardtop cinemas (many were openair). It closed as a cinema in 1930 and the site was converted to Perth’s first miniature golf course.
Ambassadors Theatre Opened in 1928 as Perth’s ‘atmospheric picture palace’, the ornate detail in the Ambassadors Theatre was inspired by the architecture of ancient Greece. A notable feature was the ceiling which was painted to look like the sky. The 1993-seat cinema was located at 629 Hay Street in the city. It was taken over by the Hoyts Theatre in 1938 then closed in 1972 before being demolished.

Cinema City
Plaza Theatre
Regent Theatre
The Art Deco-style Plaza Theatre opened 1937 in what is now known as Plaza Arcade, linking Hay and Murray Streets. With a seating capacity of 1313, it was considered a plush and modern cinema in its time. The Plaza was renamed Paris Cinema in 1965 and closed in 1984. The facade of the theatre has been preserved.
Originally the church hall for the nearby Wesley Church on Williams Street, where films were screened, the site was converted to a dedicated cinema and named the Regent after the First World War. The name was changed to the Metro during the 1930s, and it was closed in 1973.
Academy Cinemas Located at the Perth Entertainment Centre, the two Academy Cinemas opened in 1975 – one year after the Entertainment Centre. During the 1990s the name was changed to Lumiere Cinema which screened arthouse films. The two cinemas were closed in 1996 then demolished along with the Entertainment Centre in 2011.
Port Cinema This small cinema opened in Adelaide Street Fremantle in 1976 just opposite the Film and Television Institute which also housed small cinemas. Port Cinema closed in 2001 and the complex was demolished in 2014.
Cinecentre Cinecentre was the first multi-cinema complex in Perth. The three-cinema complex opened in 1971 on the corner of Barrack and Murray Streets. It closed in 2006 and the luxury QT hotel now occupies the site.
Cinema City This was another of the city’s multicinema complexes before the big megaplexes started popping up in the suburbs. Opened in the 1980s at 580 Hay Street, Cinema City featured four screens, comfy seats and a clear view over the rows in front. It closed in 2007 and the complex was demolished shortly after.
