WA Your membership is helping for the better change In 1909, RAC put up the first road signs in WA. In 1970, we advocated for the compulsory wearing of seatbelts. In 2015, we opened the RAC Electric Highway®, helping you travel emission-free from Perth to Augusta. In 2016, the RAC Intellibus® became the first driverless vehicle trial on WA roads. As an RAC member, you’ve been part of driving WA forward. Your membership has helped change our State for the better, and together there is so much more we can do.
Our State, People+Future FOCUSING ON OUR PURPOSE TO BUILD A BETTER FUTURE
RAC’s membership during this time has continued to grow and we are proud to support more than 1.2 million members in 60 per cent of households across our State.
Our school and community education programs continued to see tens of thousands of students receive road safety lessons each year and we also launched Safe Travels to educate the community as they took local holidays across our beautiful State. We have remained a strong voice for road safety. In 2019 we started the call for a Regional Road Safety Program that will save more than 2,000 Western Australians from being killed or seriously injured on our roads. This program is almost fully funded, with nearly $900 million secured in Federal and State funding. Road safety upgrades are underway along our regional roads and once completed it will be one of the most significant road safety initiatives our State has ever seen.
In 2019, I had the great honour of being elected President of RAC. This coincided with the extraordinary event of a global pandemic and a time of challenging health, social and economic conditions for our members, the WA community, and our Club. There has also been a significant cultural shift in the way many of us now live and work.
With my term as President nearing its end, I extend my deepest thanks to RAC members. It has been an honour and a privilege to represent you over the past three years. To my fellow Councillors, and to all who work at RAC, thank you for your support and your unwavering dedication to our members and the WA community.

We continued to invest in spectacular tourism destinations. Acquiring and completing a major development of RAC Esperance Holiday Park, expanding RAC Exmouth Cape Holiday Park, and providing a new caravan park for RAC Karri Valley Resort.
During this time RAC has remained purpose-led and always strived to be at its best. The launch of our new Purpose, Vision, and Mission in 2020 was a pivotal moment. This has focused and strengthened our organisation’s resolve to achieve a safer, more sustainable, and better-connected WA by 2030.
We launched our Reconnect WA initiative and partnerships have been formed with local governments to reinvigorate local streets and public spaces across the State through a range of projects and initiatives. We also supported our emergency services through the pandemic and provided financial assistance to members directly impacted by COVID-19.
I find it difficult to comprehend the overall attitude of those who appear to show disinterest in and a lack of concern about the total (annual) road deaths. It is almost as though most of us believe high road toll numbers are par for the course, and therefore to be expected. Rob LIGHTS OUT I travel regularly at night, on the Tonkin and Reid highways and the Mitchell Freeway. Every time I do, I very quickly lose count of the number of vehicles with either defective lights, or the wrong lights on. Fog lights are not to be used for normal night driving, unless conditions dictate. Parking and fog lights only, are also not to be used for normal night driving. Peter

In response to the article regarding putting the wrong fuel in your car, I recently had the misfortune to do this, but was lucky that I realised before I drove away from the bowser. I was filling up my husband’s van, for the first time, and put unleaded instead of diesel. I was devastated. RAC were wonderful and things got sorted quickly - we were on the road again within three hours. The surprising thing was, the tow truck driver said he had picked up other vehicles from the same petrol station that week with the same problem. My main issue was that the bowser nozzles were not very clear. The unleaded were labelled but the black nozzle had no markings on it at all - so I assumed it was diesel. There is so much variety of fuels these days that good labelling is very important. Cathryn A

I must commend the RAC for long having been so active in support for actions towards reducing our emissions and supporting electric vehicles. The article on the potential for V2H and V2G (Horizons, makes for interesting reading. It appears the major hurdle is our governments and electricity providers who are still way behind and holding up developments which could help us get off fossil fuels and develop the renewable grid of the future faster. We can only hope there will be renewed interest to expedite these opportunities to all of our benefit. In the meantime, it appears that the public will have to continue agitating for action. Louis

Last week I stopped at a shopping centre where I witnessed a woman, after unloading her shopping, push the trolley into a disability parking bay and drive off. I went over to move the trolley and there were two disability parking bays both with shopping trolleys left in them. It amazes me how some people can be so lazy and thoughtless. John

Most members agreed that vehicle-generated data would help improve future planning of our transport networks and safety on our roads.
Two thirds of RAC members believe that data generated by a car’s onboard computer systems should belong to the vehicle owner, not the vehicle manufacturer or dealer, according to a member survey conducted in May.

A rigorous cost-benefit analysis of the social, economic and environmental impacts of any potential road user charge should be undertaken before such a charge is considered.
PAYING FOR THE ROADS YOU DRIVE ON
In busy locations where there is a high turnover of parked vehicles, and particularly where there is a cycle lane adjacent to parking bays, there is a greater risk of this type of crash Accordingoccurring.
13
To encourage drivers to open their car door safely, the Bicycle Network recommends opening it using what is known as the Dutch Insteadreach.ofusing your right hand to open the driver-side door, use your left hand. This twists your body slightly so that it is in a position where you can more easily look over your right shoulder to see whether a cyclist is coming. This method is designed for the safety of all road users, but specifically aims to reduce incidents where car doors open into the path of oncoming cyclists.
to the Road Traffic Code 2000 (WA), regulation 243: “A person must not open or leave open, a door of a vehicle; or alight from a vehicle onto a carriageway, so as to endanger other persons using the road or impede the passage of traffic.”
At the State Government level, vehicle registration, vehicle licence duty and drivers’ licence fees are other ways in which we pay to use our roads.
Our State, People+Future
Fuel excise now makes up approximately 36 per cent of all road user charges, including state-based charges, or 66 per cent of total federal road use revenue, according to Today,BITRE.fuel excise is just one of many ways drivers pay for the roads they use.
RAC has a long-standing position that road user charges should only be implemented as part of genuine reform of taxation on road users and should not be imposed on top of existing charges, including fuel excise and vehicle taxes and duties.
Fuel excise, the tax applied to retail fuel prices, has been in decline globally.
In WA, over the last 10 years, more than one in 10 ‘dooring’ crashes involving bicycle riders resulted in the cyclist being seriously injured.
In Australia, fuel excise has been declining both as a whole and as a proportion of overall road revenue since 1999, according to the Bureau of Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE).
Luxury car tax, road-related GST (for example, on vehicles, fees and charges and fuel), customs (import) duties and fringe benefits tax are all ways the Federal Government raises money to pay for roads.
‘Dooring’ a high risk to passing cyclists
Opening your car door as a cyclist is passing can result in serious injury to the rider, with the impact severe enough to sometimes be fatal.
REPORTING A FAULTY STREETLIGHT
If you do need to report faulty street lighting on any local roads, visit my.westernpower.com.au/streetlight-issues
Once an issue has been reported, it should be fixed within five business days in the metropolitan area and major regional centres, and within nine business days in other regional areas.
A driver entering a roundabout must give way to vehicles within the roundabout. On larger roundabouts, this typically means giving way to the right. Mini roundabouts, on the other hand, may require you to give way to the left if a vehicle approaching from a road to your left enters before you. When approaching a mini roundabout, be prepared to give way to vehicles using any of the other approaches, as all entries are in close proximity to each other. As at all roundabouts, use caution when entering, even if you have right of way, in case another driver has not seen you or falsely believes that they have right of way.
At a regular roundabout, if practicable, you must signal left when exiting. But on a mini roundabout, where the distance between one exit and the next is very short, this generally isn’t practicable. All other signalling rules do however apply. So if you’re leaving a mini roundabout at the first exit and it’s less than halfway around, indicate a left turn before you enter. If continuing straight ahead or reasonably straight ahead along the road on which you entered, you don’t need to indicate as you enter the roundabout.
14
If you’re turning right - so exiting after the halfway point - indicate a right turn before you enter the roundabout.
For faulty streetlighting on freeways and main arterial roads, the issue should be reported to Main Roads WA (mainroads.wa.gov.au/contact-us).
Good street lighting is essential for providing adequate visibility of the road environment during hours of darkness, to help keep all road users safe. Streetlights also provide additional security in public spaces.
Our State, People+Future
If you notice a streetlight has a fault or is not working, you can easily report it to Western Power through the Streetlight Issues form on their website. Simply enter the street address and click on the faulty light or lights on the map.
How to use a roundaboutmini
In the June/July edition of Horizons, we explained how roundabouts work to reduce intersection crashes. We also looked at a type of roundabout you may have noticed popping up around Perth known as a mini roundabout. While mini roundabouts are subject to the same regulations as other roundabouts, their small size means that some rules work a bit differently in practice.

My name is Wayne Davis and I am retired now after a history of Army service followed by 39 years in the mining industry as a training o cer, exposed to a lot of machinery noise. I needed to hear better to really have a chance of enjoying my retirement. A few years ago I was tted with hearing aids but they did me no good at all. I think a lot of people don’t like hearing aids because of this sort of poor experience. My partner Shelley is softly spoken, and our conversations continued as before with me asking her to repeat herself, which we both found pretty irritating. Also, I’d paid a lot of money for top-notch hearing aids, and I therefore assumed that they were giving me the best outcome I could expect with my hearing loss, but put simply, they really weren’t improving anything much at all. With my old aids it was still very di cult to have a owing conversation because of my constant need for repeats of what was said. At times I still got the message wrong as anyone with a hearing loss will know that dialogue can be tough to understand if you aren’t in a perfect listening environment. Eventually Shelley got tired of being asked what she’d just said, which led her to cut out Brad’s ad from the paper and hand it to me. Since my rst appointment at Brad’s clinic, I haven’t looked back. This new hearing aid tting has changed both our lives. The aids are what I call “100%”. Now we can happily and con dently talk to each other without the need for repeats, and I am absolutely rapt. And I want to say to anyone who has had a bad experience in the past with hearing aids to come to these people because they are de nitely di erent. I don’t think you’ll be sorry. Wayne Davis

RAC Safe Travels continued, with hundreds of free car safety checks and caravan training sessions provided across the year. We were proud to also continue our support for the life-saving RAC Rescue Helicopters which have now flown 9,000 missions since 2003*. Almost $900 million in Federal and State Government funding has now been secured for the Regional Road Safety Program, one of the most important road safety initiatives in WA’s history. To help deliver a more sustainable WA, we continued our focus on the impact of vehicle emissions, more options for active and public transport, expanding the RAC Electric Highway®, and providing discounts for members who drive low-emissions vehicles.

On Friday 8 July, an RAC Rescue helicopter was called to a quad bike incident in Lancelin, transporting an injured rider to hospital. That rescue marked the 9000th mission completed by the RAC Rescue service since it began in 2003. Is a hybrid car right for you?
By Byron Mathioudakis

The next most common is the plug-in hybrid (PHEV), which has a larger battery that can be recharged using electricity from an external source like a household socket. Both have an engine paired with an electric motor, battery pack and generator, to send drive separately or concurrently to the wheels. Third is a mild hybrid, which, as the name suggests utilises only a small amount of electric assistance. While mild hybrid vehicles have their internal combustion engine running all the time while driving, they do derive some fuel economy benefits from electric assistance. There are also range extender hybrids, which are rare in Australia.
The very nature of the HEV – an electric motor and engine combo – means the battery pack never 21
The available performance comes on strongly because electric motors produce their maximum torque from zero revs, boosting acceleration and providing immediate throttle responses. This in turn means a smaller-capacity and lighter petrol engine is sufficient, further improving efficiency.
The most common type of hybrid is the non-plug-in hybrid vehicle like a Toyota Camry Hybrid.
Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)
All hybrid cars use a clever combination of an internal combustion engine (usually petrol) and one or more electric motors to drive the wheels.
All HEVs feature a stop-start function that cuts the engine when coasting at lower speeds, when braking and when stationary in traffic. This further saves fuel, lowers emissions and cuts noise pollution.
The benefits of HEVs HEVs are the cheapest entry into vehicle electrification, with prices for the Toyota Corolla and Yaris Cross hybrids starting from under $30,000.
The HEV’s battery pack is charged by the engine when driving, either when idling or on the move, and/or via kinetic energy gathered from the action of braking. This is known as regenerative braking. No external charging of the battery pack is possible.
The PHEV, meanwhile, has a much larger battery pack, offering up to about 50km of pure EV range, before the engine takes over. However, while the PHEV’s battery pack is also charged as per the HEV’s, plugging into mains power is necessary due to its extra size and capacity.
In a series-parallel HEV, the battery pack is relatively small. It provides enough charge to get the car moving to speeds and distances of around 40km/h and 2km respectively, before the engine fires up to assist with directly driving the wheels.
Car+Motoring LIKE IT OR ELECTRIFICATIONNOT, OF OUR CARS IS HERE TO STAY, AND HYBRID CARS ARE LEADING THE CHARGE. Hybrids are often considered the stepping stone between cars with conventional internal combustion engines and pure electric vehicles (EV). Hybrids essentially combine the two. But there are a few different types of hybrids, so to help you understand the options and the pros and cons of each, we’ve looked at some of the reasons you might consider a hybrid.
The first thing to note about HEVs is that they have a closed loop charging system as opposed to plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) that you ‘plug in’ to charge.
How do hybrid cars work?
HEVs produce fewer carbon and nitrogen oxide emissions than petrol or diesel cars, resulting in more economical and cleaner vehicles –especially in city areas where stop/ start traffic means the electric motor is more efficient and much better suited to the task than a petrol engine.

As the name suggests, a PHEV is a hybrid but with a charging socket like an EV, so it can be charged from an external source, such as from a home, office or charging station. In normal driving, some electricity is fed back into the battery pack from the engine and regenerative braking systems within the car, however the plug-in capability provides the option to charge the PHEV’s larger battery from an external power source, allowing for longer electric-only range. With an externally chargeable battery, a PHEV is closer to the ownership and driving experience of an EV. In plug-in hybrids, in EV mode the use of the electric motor is prioritised until the battery is depleted, after which the car works more like a regular hybrid, with petrol engine and electric motor working together more frequently for propulsion and to keep a minimum charge in the battery. It’s the solution to range anxiety while still enjoying many of the EV advantages. You’ll just need to charge a PHEV more often than a fully electric car in order to keep running on electricity. As with all EVs, a PHEV comes with its own charging hardware, namely a cable to a standard household socket. Additionally, a wall box can be purchased, installed by an outside supplier from around $3000.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)
Car+Motoring needs to be plugged into an external power source for recharging. Instead, the petrol engine is used to generate energy for the battery, or electricity is converted from otherwise wasted kinetic energy using regenerative braking technology.
While there are cheap HEVs, they are usually more expensive than their equivalently-sized and equipped petrol-engined counterparts because of the added cost and complexity of electrification, from the battery pack and electric motor and the unique transmission and electrical cabling.
Batteries are heavy and usually located in the lower rear half of a vehicle, at the cost of some luggage capacity, and usually with a temporary spare tyre instead of a full-sized spare. Some only have a tyre-inflator kit. Having two propulsion systems in the one car adds cost and complexity to servicing and repairs, though most have proven reliable and durable as electric motors comprise fewer moving parts and fluids than a petrol Althoughengine.battery packs are usually guaranteed for eight years, over time their ability to hold charge does decline. In hybrids, this means the petrol engine will run slightly more often than when the car was new. However, even with the battery beyond its best, the hybrid system will still have benefits over a petrolonly vehicle. Unless there is a major fault with the battery in its first three years, usually it becomes uneconomic to replace the battery in an aging hybrid.
HEVs are at their best in terms of driving performance and efficiency around town, because they can take advantage of the low-speed torque of the electric motor in stop/start traffic. But out on the open road at speed, they generally lose their economy advantages over petrol-only cars as petrol engines become more economical at cruising speeds but still have to carry the weight of the battery and electric motor.
The disadvantages of HEVs
Using a regular household outlet requires around six to eight hours depending on the PHEV, while obviously a HEV requires no plugging-in hassles.
The disadvantages of a plug-in hybrid
US studies have shown that using household electricity to charge a PHEV costs substantially less than the petrol required by a HEV, however the savings here will usually take some time to offset the amount that PHEVs usually cost in the first place.
LEFT: The Kia Niro PHEV; BELOW: PHEVs come with their own charging hardware but can also be charged from a standard household socket. 23
EV charging infrastructure is growing rapidly across Australia, meaning PHEV owners are increasingly able to use their vehicles without needing to call on the engine if they so desire.
The advantages of a plug-in hybrid
The added complexity of a larger and heavier battery pack, combined with extra electrical engineering for the plug-in technology, means more to service and repair over the longer term, on top of the engine and motor combination.
As with EVs, PHEV owners report that they habitually plug their cars in to charge overnight except they don’t worry about being left stranded if they occasionally forget to recharge their cars.
PHEVs allow the driver to control when the electric motor operates, to preserve charge for when it is most beneficial running in EV mode, such as in built-up areas or during traffic jams.
Though a warranty for up to eight years is the norm, if you do choose to replace a PHEV’s battery pack, it’ll be more expensive than a HEV’s smaller equivalent. For example, a Prius battery pack is about $4000 while a PHEV’s can cost upwards of $15,000 (before labour) for some models, so you’ll need to consider whether this sort of expenditure makes good economic sense in an older vehicle.
Owners who forget or don’t bother to plug their cars in and drive their PHEVs purely on petrol will suffer higher fuel consumption compared to regular cars and especially HEVs. Mild hybrids Mild hybrids commonly have a starter motor for the engine that can also function as an electricity generator (known as a startergenerator), so after starting the engine, the same unit can also send energy back into the car’s battery, which is usually a 48-volt unit rather than 12 volts. This removes the need for a separate starter motor, saving weight and bringing the ability to give the petrol engine a boost under acceleration. Mild hybrids with starter-generators also commonly include engine stop-start technology, which operates far more smoothly than stop-start systems in cars with conventional starter motors. Mild hybrid cars currently for sale in Australia include the Mazda3 Skyactiv-X and MX-30, as well as the Mercedes-Benz C 200.
Car+Motoring
Currently, PHEVs cost substantially more than their petrol and HEV counterparts – around $8000 was the additional premium payable to get the old Hyundai Ioniq PHEV over the regular Ioniq Hybrid. As with most HEVs, PHEVs powertrain electrification often results in reduced cargo capacity, though it’s worse in the PHEV because the battery pack is larger again, often necessitating the removal of a spare wheel.

Sales of traditional bicycles, electric bikes and e-scooters have all seen significant and sustained rises as people see the benefits of avoiding traffic jams, saving money and often time, lowering their carbon footprint, and still keeping a distance from other commuters.
, People+Future
Known as micromobility, and covering a range of lightweight one-person transport options, it is a trend some urban planners believe could help reshape the way cities operate.
Personal electric transport devices, such as e-bikes, are starting to reshape the way we move around our cities and local neighbourhoods. However you measure it, our love affair with the car comes at a cost.
But there is a glimmer of hope — and it comes on two wheels (or even one).
RIGHT:Quay,ElizabethABOVE:Perth;Sharede-scootersinCopenhagen,Denmark.
Tiny transport takes over The term micromobility is still relatively new — it was coined in 2017 — but its potential has caught on around the world.
The transportpersonalrevolution
And while the pandemic briefly gave Perth road users a reprieve from gridlock, roads are now busier than in 2019.
AustraliaWesternTourism
In many locations that MetroCount monitors, there’s been a clear increase in people riding, walking, scooting and cycling since the pandemic began.
“We saw more people out riding and walking, which was positive. But we also saw many regular public transport users becoming regular drivers, and if these habits are locked in, then bouncing back to or exceeding pre-COVID public transport demand will be even more difficult.
RAC acting general manager Social Impact, Sarah Macaulay, says that with good weather and relatively flat terrain, Perth has the right conditions for micromobility — but there’s more that needs to be done to enable it to become mainstream, as a safe, convenient, and affordable alternative for many trips.
“We need to look at how we can support increased public transport patronage when it’s safe to do so, and enable more walking, cycling and micromobility more broadly to complement this, replacing unnecessary car trips.”
Our State, People+Future cafes, restaurants, your child’s school, your gym – can be accessed within a quarter of an hour by public transport, foot or two wheels from where you live.
New York has seen bike trips jump 50 per cent in the past year, while California is now subsidising the purchase of e-bikes.
“With an electric boost, people can comfortably travel further than by walking and cycling a regular bike, which increases the attractiveness of micromobility options for a wider demographic of people.
In Perth, that wasn’t the case, but commuter hotspots such as the South Perth foreshore saw a 40 per cent jump above average cycling numbers before the pandemic, and a 70 per cent jump in the number of e-scooters.
“People often only make a step change in their travel behaviour when external conditions encourage it, and the pandemic did that,” she says.
“During lockdowns, people weren’t going to their workplaces, so they were getting out for recreational cycling or walking,” he “Sincesays.then, there are people who have a few days a week working from home, so our commuting and patterns of movement have changed.”
“We need to consider the full range of potential users and make sure we’re catering for their needs, as well as ensuring the safety of other vulnerable road users interacting with them.” 30
In Australia, where a lot of trips are shorter than 5km, there are also calls for governments to get behind the trend.
Cities hope to harness the new micromobility movement Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Munich are often cited as stand-out examples of micromobility in action, with between a third and half of all trips undertaken by bike, but other parts of the world are also rapidly turning to micromobility to combat RAC’scongestion.Sarah Macaulay says designing infrastructure and our streets to enhance safety for all users, especially the most vulnerable such as pedestrians, cyclists and riders, will be crucial in encouraging and supporting uptake.
In Sydney and Melbourne, the pandemic saw some road lanes given over to riders rather than cars, increasing safer route options for cyclists and riders.
Public transport struggles with health concerns Public transport is designed to move huge amounts of people efficiently and can be the heartbeat of a thriving city. Despite steady population growth, bus trips peaked in Perth in 2014-15 and train trips two years before that. Since then, it’s been stagnating and even showing a steady Pandemicdecline.health concerns changed our travel behaviour, first limiting movement, then dissuading some from sharing their journeys, and creating opportunities to work more often from home. At the same time, the number of people turning to bikes, e-bikes and eRideable devices such as electric scooters, has Mauricesoared.Berger is a business development manager at MetroCount, a WA business that measures traffic, bike and pedestrian movements across the globe.
One driver for the widespread use of micromobility devices is the rise of share schemes, with e-scooter hire outpacing shared bikes or e-bike schemes across the US and Europe.
Germany, for example, is thought to have about 120,000 shared e-scooters, about a third of all the scooters in Europe, while 110 US cities now have shared e-scooters available.
CLOCKWISE FROM FAR LEFT: Germany has approximately 120,000 shared e-scooters; A cyclist commuting along a Melbourne CBD bike lane; Pandemic health concerns have impacted public transport usage; Amsterdam is a stand-out example of micromobility in action.
The rules for transporting eRideables and bicycles around Perth tend to limit travel to off-peak times.
“It is so important that we take care of ourselves and one another out there –whether we’re using a road, footpath or shared path. “An expanded network of off-road paths and on-road protected lanes, as well as the creation of slower speed streets, will be important in supporting micromobility.”
“We also need to see more education on how to use eRideable devices, such as e-scooters, safely and legally, and a greater level of enforcement.” Making micromobility work in conjunction with public transport is also important.
In WA, shared e-scooter trials are underway in Rockingham, Esperance and Bunbury through Beam, the biggest micromobility operator in the Asia Pacific, while the City of Stirling is running a 12-month beachfront trial of 250 e-scooters with operator Neuron Mobility.
The number of people turning to bikes, e-bikes and eRideable devices such as electric scooters, has soared. 31
E-scooters and bikes can only be taken on buses if folded and in a fit-for-purpose carry bag or unfolded on off-peak trains.
But as the micromobility movement grows, there’s hope some of these teething problems will be resolved, as better models develop and technology limits misuse to enhance safety.
In other Australian cities, the popularity of share schemes has led to complaints about abandoned or trashed e-scooters, unsafe riders, and risky behaviour.
Sadly, as personal use of e-scooters in WA has grown, there have been collisions causing injury and even death.

Trials explore short-term hire services
In many locations, though, share schemes have had mixed success.
“eRideables can be a great solution to get from your home to a train station for instance, but it’s important to enable riders to securely park and ride at stations and to complete trips more seamlessly using multiple transport modes.”
With prices for new and used cars still high and waiting lists stretching into months if not years for some popular makes, many vehicle owners may be putting off an upgrade and sticking with what they have for now.

There are also mobile headlight cleaners who charge around $200 for a full headlight restoration. These are best for long-term results.
ENGINE DEGREASE
CUT AND POLISH Here’s a good rule of thumb to remember: if your fingernail can get caught in a scratch, it’s too deep for a DIY cut and polish at home and will require professional paint restoration. That said, a good cut and polish can actually remove many unsightly scratches quite well or at least reduce their visibilty. In case you’re not clear on the difference between a wax and a cut and polish – a wax is applied after the cutting compound to protect the finish. Before you apply a cutting compound, wash and dry your vehicle. Then apply it in sections using a cloth. Allow time for it to dry (when it’s chalky you’ll know), and then polish off the white residue very lightly using a soft, dry cloth in a circular motion – avoid using harsher fabrics. Don’t polish too harshly as you don’t want to remove too much of the existing clear coat that protects your paint.
INTERIOR CARPET STAIN REMOVER
REMOVE CAKED-ON DIRT FROM CARPETS AND FLOOR MATS
For these you’ll need to hit up a professional carpet cleaner, who should have the required attachments for automotive applications. Depending on severity and size, this may run into several hundred dollars, but the finished result should please even the most fastidious owners.
33
Pro tip: Never polish a car in full, strong or direct sunlight. It will give a poor result. It’s best to do it in a shady spot or garage. Note that the lighter the duco, the longer lasting the polish will appear to be. Apply a cut and polish at least every six months but apply a wax (after a wash) more regularly.
Cloudy headlight lenses can make your whole car look much older than it is. They also hamper illumination and impair night-time visibility of the road ahead. This issue is particularly prevalent in vehicles from the mid-‘90s onwards, as plastic replaced glass. Exposure to the elements and UV rays cause oxidisation of the plastic, breaking it down and creating the cloudy appearance. To help with this, there are many off-the-shelf cleaners that will require a bit of preparation and some muscle (or a sander/drill bit attachment), as well as polish and anti-UV agent application. The harder you’re prepared to scrub, clean and wash, the better the results will be. Note that a light buff will only clear the headlight temporarily.

HEADLIGHT POLISHING KIT
Note that spilling dairy products like milk or yoghurt is at the very least a professional clean-up job. Such incidents need to be dealt with immediately and swiftly.
This one is easy and cheap and gets great results. Just ensure your tyres are clean and dry first. The tyre foam will bring some of the deep black colour back, while the wheel cleaner will help remove the dirt and grime from the rims. If you’re preparing your car for sale, do this just before you photograph it or before buyers start coming to see it.
Regular carpet stain remover items from the supermarket or auto stores have limited effect and may struggle to get rid of really bad stains like heavy shoe scuffing, mud, grease or oil.
WHEEL CLEANER AND TYRE FOAM
This can be a real challenge. No matter how much you vacuum or scrub, the grime just won’t budge. The solution? Grab a dry, hard brush and scrub away. Once it’s all loose, run a high-suction vacuum cleaner over it to remove the grit, and repeat if necessary, until all the caked-on dirt disappears.
Available in aerosol can form from any auto store, engine degreaser should be sprayed liberally on your engine and left on for a few minutes - but don’t let it dry. Just allow it to soak, then apply a high-pressure water hose. Take some precautions. Allow the engine to cool down before turning on the waterworks. Use an old paint brush to loosen more stubborn dirt and grease, then cover vulnerable electrical engine items like the alternator, fuse boxes and distributor (where fitted), to stop water ingress. Sheets of plastic and a rubber band should work fine.
Car+Motoring
Regular household window cleaners will do the job easily and effectively, unless your car glass has an aftermarket tint; in this case, the chemicals may harm or break down the tint, resulting in that unsightly purple discolouration over time. An alternative is to buy a can or bottle of automotive glass cleaner - some professional detailers believe it works better than household window cleaners.
The only caveat here is price: it’s worthwhile paying for quality so stick to the well-known brands. Cheap tyres, generally speaking, will wear more quickly and not perform as well, so they can be a false economy.
NEW TYRES
If you want a really cheap alternative, vinegar and newspaper work remarkably well in getting your car glass clean and streak-free.
REMOVE STAINS FROM CLOTH SEATS
Any auto store upholstery cleaner in a can will do the job. Spray on, agitate with a stiff brush and vacuum. It’s super easy. But for really stubborn or nasty stains, you may need a proper steam cleaning service, which can cost upwards of $200-plus if you want your interior to look, feel and smell close to new again. It can be worth protecting your investment with a high-quality cleaning job once a year.
Remember, the minimum legal tyre tread depth is 1.5mm, though it’s highly recommended you change your tyres when the tread gets to 3mm. If the tread is okay but the tyres are more than five years old, it’s time to consider replacing them or at least paying closer attention to their condition.
AUTOMOTIVE GLASS CLEANER
While it’s not exactly a car detailing tip, one of the best things you can do to get that new car feeling back is to fit new tyres. The transformation is profound. Along with noticeably better wet-road grip, new tyres will make your car quieter and softer-riding, while improving steering precision, reducing braking distances and increasing dynamic control, especially during emergency braking.

Dwellingup A getaway for all seasons and reasons
The joys of camping are many in Dwellingup, with sites dotted throughout Lane Poole Reserve’s 55,000 hectares of jarrah trees and waterways, making rigging up a tent an inviting prospect. But awareness is growing that guy ropes and roll out mattresses aren’t the only Dwellingupoption.provides nurture, as well as nature, in the form of chalets, retreats and bed and breakfasts. There’s Noble River Estate, a collection of comfortable, selfcontained timber cottages in the forest; Lewis Park Chalets, which has modern, light-flooded houses overlooking paddocks, and Jarrah Forest Lodge, a more basic option tailored to hikers. An increasing number of travellers are choosing to combine outdoor fun with indoor comforts. It takes about 90 minutes to drive from Perth to Dwellingup. As the highway veers into horse country, with grassy fields and orchards straddling the road, you feel further away than you are.

DWELLINGUP IS MORE THAN JUST A CAMPER’S PARADISE. IT OFFERS THE CHANCE OF A PEACEFUL NATURE RETREAT WITH A BIT OF LUXURY OR AN ADRENALINE BOOSTING ESCAPE, AND ALL JUST OVER AN HOUR’S DRIVE FROM PERTH.

The town itself – population 400 – has cafes, a traditional old pub, quirky emu murals and the shrill toot of the Hotham Valley tourist train puffing out of the station. Minutes away from the main street, tall, slender trees sprout from every surface, parting only for the Bibbulmun (walking) Track and the Munda Bidi (off-road cycling) Trail; each of the 1000km wilderness routes meet in this easy-access nature Deeperdestination.inthe forest, you’ll find a treetop adventure playground of ropes, suspended planks and zip lines amongst the canopy, while back in town, an art and history trail winds between trees. There’s both energetic adventure and tranquil activities in Dwellingup, making for an outdoorsy getaway where everyone can hit the reset button.

Café culture Perhaps the last thing you might expect to find in a tiny forestry town is a horse float serving espresso coffee in the centre of an open-air café. The float, transformed into a food van, is the heart of Garden Eats, a lofty space that opened in 2020, adjoining a modern art gallery called Lost Eden Creative.

The woman behind it, Ebony Tippett, is a trained vegan and celiac chef and her signature scrambled tofu breakfast bagel with rice paper, bacon and vegan cheese is as surprisingly satisfying as her space is “Herendearing.foodlooks too pretty to eat,” says Kellie Rubenstein, who owns Rubie’s Place, directly across the road. Rubie’s is a milk bar with a modern twist: along with a sideboard of nostalgic lollies (think Wizz Fizz, Fads and Nerds) there are frankfurters in buns served on red gingham paper, tubs of gluten-free gelato, locally baked brownies and freshly squeezed juices.

Peel region. She says the ‘support local’ focus is reflected by the visitors coming to her little town. “The last few years, tourism has revved up and especially during COVID, people are discovering their own backyards,” she says. “People come here for the trees, the fresh air and fires in winter; there’s bike riding, horse riding and canoeing, plus lots of artistic elements around town.”
Mountain biking fun
Munda Bidi, which means ‘path through the forest’ in the Noongar language, also forms the spine of the 32km, purposebuilt Murray Valley trail network within Lane Poole Reserve, south of town.
There are green (easy), blue (moderate) and black (challenging) trails of 900m to 3km-long. An $8.5M program to enhance and expand the trail network is currently underway, with an additional 20km of mountain bike trails - and a suspension bridge - soon to open. In town, there will be new ‘white’ trails suitable for all abilities. Many new and existing trails can be cycled to from the town, but there are also shuttle bus options to whisk downhill riders to the trail head, with Loose Riders and WA Riders both offering the service (bookings essential).
One street back from the main drag is the Dwellingup Trails and Visitor Centre.
It overlooks Dwellingup’s popular skate and “pump” bike park and a big new Builtplayground.onlytwo years ago, the yawning timber building is an activity centre in itself. Large, interactive touch-screen tables answer questions and spawn ideas on what to see and do, while a fully restored, 1939 model Mack truck captivates the kids. If you time your visit right, you’ll be startled, and then enchanted by the toot of the Hotham Valley train as it chugs away from behind the Visitor Centre.
The traditional Steam Ranger departs Dwellingup at 10:30am and 2pm on Sundays, from May to October, with extra services during the school holidays.
It leads to the soon-to-be-upgraded Marrinup Trail, an 8km MTB beginner loop north of town that’s ideal for families. The Turner Hill trail, 11km north of Dwellingup, is a worthy option for more energetic riders keen on tackling fast descents, rocky sections and cross-country conditions.
Exploring Lane Poole Reserve
Whether driving, hiking or pushing pedals, the mirror-like reflections in Lane Poole Reserve’s waterway will stop you in your tracks. Edged by slender jarrah thickets and pine forests, the Murray River snakes through the valley’s key conservation area, with pretty vantage points at Dwaarlindjirraap, Bob’s Crossing and the Chuditch picnic area. The walking trails are as popular as the MTB tracks, ranging in duration from one hour to six-hour journeys. The Nanga Brook Walk Trail weaves through the historic Nanga timber mill and townsite, while the Island Pool Walk Trail loop sees you climb a steep forest rise to reach expansive valley views. The biggie, the 18km King Jarrah Walk Trail, follows former timber industry transport routes. There are more than 150 camp sites spread across the reserve’s eight riverside locations, and the majority are bookable online. Picnic tables, in-season fire pits (April-November), toilets and barbeques enhance the camping experience. If you’re desperate for a hot shower or want to recharge your devices, facilities are available at the Trails and Visitor Centre in TheDwellingup.mightyBibbulmun Track, which crosses through town, passes to the east of Lane Poole Reserve. If you’re hiking and want to visit town or the surrounding area, Dwellingup Transfers takes hikers - and visitors without wheels - around. Meanwhile, if canoeing or fast river
The diesel Forest Train runs Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, November to April. Jump onboard for a two-hour journey through the countryside. Waypoints Cafe is housed under the same roof (it does great chips), as is the Dwellingup Adventures shop. From the latter, you can hire mountain bikes (MTB) for all ages and set off on the dualdirection Munda Bidi Trail, with a trail entry point only 150m away.
Getting in touch with nature isn’t only about breathing deeply and gazing at the horizon. The zip lines and ropes courses at Treetops Adventure Dwellingup prove it can be pulse-quickening, too. The courses are suspended high between the trees within Lane Poole Reserve.
For those who aren’t hiking or biking, it’s worth finishing your Dwellingup nature escape at Vergone’s Fruit Stall, where you can grab a box of just-picked apples or a collection of heritage pumpkins. Fill the boot, glance up one last time at the forest and commit Dwellingup to memory as your go-to place for adventure, whether it’s a hard or soft one.

Thrill-seekers arrive for a timed slot and are fitted with a harness, helmet and gloves before being shown how to use the clever cleat lock-and-release system. It keeps you safe while balancing on lofty platforms and hanging precariously from ropes as you navigate aerial obstacles.

Adventurers are sent on the easy courses before testing their coordination and courage on harder runs. Some find the heights challenging – you can climb up to 25m – but rest assured the jitters are short-lived, quickly replaced by glee and laughter. In fact, when your 2.5hr session is up, there’s a fair chance you won’t want to leave.
This leaf-shaped building hidden in the forest is one of Dwellingup’s best kept secrets. Drop a gold coin into the hungry emu donation container and wander in to see ceramics, fine woodwork, leather goods and paintings and, at certain times, the artists-in-residence who create them.
“People can send through packages ahead of their arrival, and we will hold for them,” says Cara. “We’ll also provide whatever they need, including linen.”
The community-run not-for-profit organisation also has an environment interpretive centre that engages kids with preserved specimens in jars and a creativity table. Outside, on a wheelchair accessible walking trail there are wooden art installations representing the six seasons of the Noongar calendar and an 11m high treetop walk. It leads to a timber cutter’s hut showing what life was like for the early settlers.
Forest Discovery Centre
Centre manager Cara Samski fell in love with Dwellingup a decade ago, leaving her native California behind. “There’s nothing like it in WA, as a lifestyle place and for being in nature. It’s a culturally rich place with both forestry and the conservation of the forest,” she says, noting that all timber milling will end in 2024.

Speed offences have been around since the dawn of motoring, but fences for your speed are newer. Geofencing uses a mobile phone or a car’s GPS system to detect a boundary, and the technology is currently being trialled to see whether it can be used to reduce vehicle speeds in particularly speed sensitive areas. In the German-based trial of Ford vans, as vehicles enter a lower speed zone, the new limit flashes on the dashboard and the van automatically reduces speed. The driver can override the system and deactivate the speed limit control at any time. In its current form, the geofencing speed limit control system allows drivers to set their own geofencing zones at speeds as low as 20km/h.

A hydrogen fuel cell-powered vehicle and an all-electric car are being trialled by the WA Police Force to assess their suitability for potential future frontline policing. The two cars, a hydrogen fuel cell Toyota Mirai and a Hyundai Ioniq 5 – both rare on WA roads – will be used as genuine police vehicles and have been fitted with WA Police Force corporate branding, police radio, lights and sirens. The WA Police said the Hyundai Ioniq 5 would be trialled at Midland, Rockingham, Geraldton and Bunbury Police Stations, while the Toyota Mirai would be used in the Fremantle area.

The Ariya being used in the pole-to-pole trip will have special modifications and will be accompanied by a support vehicle. We compare the Haval H6 with the Mitsubishi Outlander
Car+Motoring Test drive
52
By Alex Forrest With the Mitsubishi Outlander having been on sale in Australia for nearly 20 years, and the Haval H6 dating back only six years, these two midsized SUVs are almost at the extremes when it comes to brand familiarity in Australia.
BACK-TO-BACKSUVSMID-SIZEDGO
TOP: The Mitsubishi Outlander is a smoothrunning, good handling family SUV with a well-designed interior; LEFT: There are some big differences between the ways the Mitsubishi and the Haval drive; ABOVE: The entry level Outlander ES gets a 9-inch infotainment screen.
RATING Mitsubishi OutlanderHavalH6*2wd
The Haval is also (at the time of writing) available only as a five-seater, whereas the Mitsubishi can be had as a seven-seater. Albeit those third-row seats in the Outlander are really only for small people.
CLAIMED
The base model Haval’s 2.0-litre turbo makes 150kW and 320Nm and uses less fuel at 7.4L/100km, but its drivetrain (including a seven-speed dual clutch transmission) is less refined than the Mitsubishi’s.
On the road With a 2.0-litre turbo powering the Haval and a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated engine in the Mitsubishi, there are some big differences between the ways these two SUVs drive. The Mitsubishi’s 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine produces 135kW and 245Nm, and uses a CVT transmission. Whereas a CVT would have caused some eye-rolling 10 years ago due to the engine-droning these transmissions used to produce, it’s a different story these days. It’s well-tuned for urban driving with good torque for stop-start driving and in return, isn’t too thirsty, at 7.7L/100km for the combined cycle test.
PRICE
ENGINE
The cheapest versions of the Outlander and H6 cost $40,520 and $33,990 respectively, drive away. Both the Haval H6 and the Mitsubishi Outlander offer hybrid models, however the Outlander hybrid is a plug-in (with a larger battery) and the H6 is a non-plug-in hybrid in the manner of a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. In the Outlander, the entry level ES gets a 9-inch infotainment screen, whereas the base model Haval H6 has a 10.25-inch screen. Apple Carplay is wireless in the Outlander – a big plus – but it needs a cable in the H6, although we did find the wireless Carplay connection in the Outlander wasn’t as solid as it could be. Android Auto needs a cable in both. Both have well-finished and neatly designed interiors for the prices paid.
Safety and Practicality
ENGINE
Both the Outlander and H6 carry 5-star ANCAP safety ratings, and both ratings are date stamped 2022. Also in both these vehicles, the basic driver assistance safety equipment is available as standard, such as autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, as well as junction assist. The Mitsubishi offers adaptive cruise control as standard across the range, but in the Haval H6 the base model doesn’t have it. That said, the Haval starts off much cheaper.
Verdict
The Haval H6 does offer some excellent inclusions for the price, especially in the range-topping H6 Ultra Hybrid. It does have some infotainment system quirks though and its handling isn’t as sharp as it could be. Dollar for dollar, you get fewer features in the Mitsubishi Outlander, but with this newly revised model, the extra spend will get you a smooth-running, good handling family SUV with a well-designed interior and a car that will always have strong appeal in the used market. 53

Whereas Australians are still getting familiar with Chinese brands such as Haval, Mitsubishi has been transporting Australians for decades. Australians also know good value when they see it, so to survive, any newcomer needs to be an even more convincing proposition than the current competition. Haval is continuing to grow its presence, and it’s aiming to steal the attention of SUV buyers away from established alternatives like the Outlander – a favourite in the mid-sized SUV segment. But the Outlander has recently had a major update which has made it a more premium-feeling vehicle, with improved tech and a contemporary design while still offering seven seats. Let’s see how they compare.
Value for money
The GTI’s engine is the same as in the previous model, and makes 188kW and 370Nm. The seven-speed dual clutch transmission is still a great match for the engine, though some enthusiast drivers might prefer a less muted exhaust.
The arrival of the new Golf Mark 8 GTI in late 2021 brought with it some controversy. It also continued the long tradition of sporty driving characteristics packaged in a highly practical hatchback bearing those three letters which together, now describe an icon: GTI.
Somewhat controversially, VW has eliminated most of the interior buttons, having instead gone for a cleaner design by integrating more of the car’s functionality into a 10-inch touchscreen.
Among the Golf GTI’s best-of-class features is its ride quality, which provides an astounding level of compliance at low speed given the car also remains so stable and planted when cornering. The fit and finish of the interior is premium but understated.
Car+Motoring
The interface may be more complicated than physical buttons and dials, but it’s somewhat offset by the new voice activation system. For example, it can even recognise whether the driver or front passenger is talking and adjust the air conditioning specifically for who’s asking to change it.
VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTI
Those controversial elements of the new Mark 8 GTI will be important for potential buyers to get fully across, but those wanting the things that define a Golf GTI won’t be disappointed.

The most noteworthy change brought by the new GTI is the hike in its retail price by $6110 to $53,300 when launched. Since then, the asking price has gone up again to $54,490. Add on-road costs, and you’re looking at more than However,$62,000.that does get you VW’s new generation safety gear that includes oncoming vehicle braking when turning, driver fatigue detection and manoeuvre braking, front and rear (like AEB at parking speeds).
MAZDA CX-5
After the Toyota RAV4, the CX-5 was the next best-selling mid-sized SUV in Australia in 2021 and the seventh-biggest selling vehicle overall. Globally, the CX-5 is Mazda’s best-selling model. Buyers would also compare this to the Subaru Forester, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage and Mitsubishi Outlander. With such strong competition, the CX-5 needed to be updated carefully to stay current while also keeping the elements that have made the model so Threesuccessful.notablechanges
Mazda’s hugely popular mid-sized SUV, the CX-5, has been on sale in Australia for 10 years, and for 2022, it has had some important updates.
Under the skin though, there have also been changes to the suspension dampers to reduce the amount of dive at the front when braking. Mazda engineers also said they have been working to further reduce noise and vibration.
The new Touring Active is primarily a cosmetically changed Touring, with the Active version getting some small splashes of green added to the interior and on the outside, some extra silver finishes to the bodywork.
The whole CX-5 range has also had a styling refresh, with a new, more coarse front grille mesh and above that, a more prominent leading edge of the bonnet.
to come with the updated CX-5 are that a head-up display is now standard across the range, there’s a new variant called the Touring Active and, unsurprisingly – there have also been some price increases. Depending on the variant, those price increases range from $1000 (such as with the entry level Maxx) through to $1300 for the range-topping Akera, when current pricing is compared with 2021 pricing.
Car+Motoring
The CX-5’s interior retains its excellent ergonomics, which include subtle safety features such as an infotainment screen that works only as a touch screen when the vehicle is stationary. On the move, the rotary dial can be used.

Q I have a five-year-old Hyundai Tucson and after driving it for a few minutes the warning chimes go on for five minutes then turn off. A Google search says the removal of a fuse should solve it. This is also a known problem and Hyundai’s solution was that I see a mechanic. Edward, Kelmscott A Removing the fuse which protects the functionality of the warning chimes will only disable the warning chimes, and not fix the problem. If the warning buzzers are linked to safety-related items such as seat belts, or a door open warning, then removing the fuse will also take away the ability for any warnings or alarms to be sounded, which will affect the vehicle’s safety credentials. A qualified auto electrician will be able to provide further guidance.

Q With the price of everything rising, are car services essential at the set times or something that could be left a bit longer. If left, would it affect the value of the car when you come to resell? Katie, Yanchep A Yes, it is important to have your vehicle serviced within the specified timeframe. If the vehicle is still under warranty, not following the manufacturer’s servicing requirements could void your warranty and yes, it could affect the car’s resale value. Some manufacturers do allow some time after the service date to provide some flexibility. You don’t have to have the car serviced at a dealer to maintain the warranty, and shopping around should help you keep costs down. 57

Q Is there a lifespan of the refrigerant in car air conditioning? Does it degrade over time? And if it needs changing, are there any ecofriendly replacement options and ways of disposing the old refrigerant? Wade, Yokine A Air conditioning refrigerant can continue to be used in a well-sealed system for long periods but leaks due to damage or deterioration are more often the reasons for systems needing new refrigerant. Technicians working on vehicle air conditioning systems are required to reclaim and then safely dispose of used refrigerant. This is typically done by a specialist business using a process which turns the gas into salty water. RAC members can take advantage of our Motoring Advice Line. This is especially important if you’ve purchased a used car with no logbook or where the logbook has not been filled out.
Keeping up with logbook services while your car is under warranty is important for maintaining the manufacturer warranty. Regular servicing thereafter will ensure it is kept in optimum condition as the car ages.
Keeping your servicing receipts will provide proof that your car has been well looked after and will give any subsequent buyers confidence when you come to on-sell the car.
Pet Immune Dual Technology Motion sensors are more complex and use two different detection sensors. The unit is more tolerant of alarms being triggered due to animals, even larger animals or small animals in a group, as both sensors need to be active for the alarm to trigger.
If you are thinking of selling your car and you’re an RAC Auto Services customer, in the event that you haven’t kept service receipts, we can provide these for you on request.
Fortunately, security systems can include pet immune motion sensors which can tell the difference between humans and animals, making pet-triggered alarms less common.

Pet Immune Passive Infrared Motion sensors are less sensitive to movement lower to the ground so your dog or cat can literally go under the radar. They need to be positioned accurately to work best.
In the two years to 2021, national pet ownership rose from 61 per cent to 69 per cent, according to research by Animal Medicines Australia, including more than a million additional dogs that became part of Australian Ashouseholds.anewpet
A car that’s been well-maintained both inside and out will no doubt have better resale value, especially where you have a record of its service history. This means making sure that your logbook is filled in by your service centre after each logbook service and also keeping hold of all servicing receipts which detail the work that has been done.
owner there are often adjustments that need to be made around your home to accommodate your new family member. One of those adjustments may be to the way you use your home alarm.
The COVID-19 pandemic has seen a boom in pet ownership across Australia.

100 Town Teams milestone
MEMBERS SAVE ON INTERNATIONAL CAR RENTAL
LEFT: Inglenooks - The Inglewood on Beaufort Town Team turned two underutilised areas along Beaufort Street into much-loved and well-used community spaces. 59
In addition to an exclusive 15 per cent discount across Australia and New Zealand, RAC members can now receive up to 10 per cent off car rental at any international destination.
Western Australia’s Town Team Movement unofficially began in 2009 with a citizen-led group, the Beaufort Street Network, who first held the Beaufort Street Festival in 2010. The group wanted to bring more vibrancy to their neighbourhood, and this one-day festival is now attended by more than 150,000 people each year. By the time the Town Team Movement was officially launched in 2018 there were 20 Town Teams across WA. In June this year, the Town Team Movement celebrated a significant milestone, reaching 100 Town Teams across Australia and New Zealand. This not-for-profit organisation brings together residents, businesses and landowners to work collaboratively to improve a place in their local area, often a town centre or main street.
LEFT: Mural on Melrose - Thanks to the Leederville Connect Town Team, a vibrant mural is now brightening up an otherwise dull noise wall near the freeway.
Home+Life
RAC has been the Principal Partner of the Town Team Movement since 2018 and has helped empower Town Teams across WA to make their neighbourhoods a better place to live, work and connect. Inglewood's Inglenooks, the Horrocks Beach Lookout and the Mural on Melrose are just some of the ways we’ve helped to make that happen.
ABOVE: Horrocks Beach Lookout - To help the community recover after Cyclone Seroja, the Horrocks Town Team created a beachfront lookout, with planter boxes, seating and a new path, and launched the new lookout with a community event.

The best months to walk are from April to early November, with September and October peak season. Hit the mountain bike trails Dwellingup is a mountain biking hotspot with trails suited to all experience levels. There are more than 56km of purpose-built, single-track trails that wind their way through some spectacular countryside. The Dwellingup Trails and Visitor Centre has all the details you’ll need. Follow the falls After the winter rains, Marrinup Falls is one of the most picturesque reasons to visit beautiful Dwellingup. A gentle 1.4km looped walking trail takes you along a bush track, blooming with wildflowers in spring, to the top of the falls which flow down into the valley. Take a picnic and enjoy the scenery. Whether you’re camping under the stars or watching from the comfort of a forest chalet, you’ll experience the kind of spectacular light show that you just don’t get in the city.
Get out on the water Hire a kayak or bring your own and explore Dwellingup’s stunning waterways. The upper Murray, between the Yarragil campground to Nanga Bridge, is a calm spot for a paddle from late spring. Care should be taken during the winter months when heavy rainfall causes the river to flow faster.
Surrounded by forest, Lane Poole Reserve has eight campgrounds, including Baden Powel which has three sheltered camp kitchens and caters for tents, campervans and caravans. Tony’s Bend has sites close to the river, while Nanga Brook is a well-appointed site suitable for large campervans and caravans.
Dwellingup is renowned for its orchards, with crisp apples, lush berries and juicy plums. Some orchards offer seasonal fruit picking throughout the year so you can bag your own fresh produce or keep an eye out for farmgate sales as you travel around. Get on board the Hotham Valley tourist railway Enjoy a glimpse back in time on board the Hotham Valley Steam Ranger travelling past the Darling Ranges and through the Dwellingup Forest (May to October).
