RAC trial lights up solutions In the past year RAC has tackled many issues affecting our members and the state, using innovative strategies. We’ve applied better, smarter and more integrated solutions to keep our members safe and our road and public transport networks flowing. RAC funded a trial using technology to improve the performance of traffic signals and found peak-hour congestion could be considerably decreased across the network. Making the state’s existing infrastructure work harder and smarter is one way we can help relieve congestion pressures. The trial focused on the section of Orrong Road between Francisco Street and Oats Street, and was the second stage of a twoyear study initiated and funded by the RAC, with Main Roads WA as a key partner. The trial used technology to test shorter traffic-signal cycle times, which resulted in vehicles getting a green light more frequently, helping traffic clear faster and creating shorter queues. Vehicle queue lengths at the four intersections along the trial corridor were reduced by up to 34 per cent, while journey times were 20 per cent faster. For the trial, the traffic-light cycle times, or the total time allowed to receive a green light, was shortened by as much as 50 seconds. This, along with changes to the signal settings, made the traffic signals ‘react’ to congestion and reduced delays. These signal settings also resulted in up to a 10 per cent increase in the number of vehicles passing through the trial area in the peak direction of travel for typical trips. While signal timings will differ from location to location, this approach can be applied

more widely to help improve traffic conditions across the network. Efficiency improvements in our existing city-transport infrastructure means government will be better placed to deliver further investment across our regions, including the regional local government areas of the City of Albany, City of Bunbury and City of Greater Geraldton, where the population is expected to increase by up to 15 to 29 per cent between 2012 and 2026. As a first step, we will be advocating for the State Government to provide the funding required to ensure that Western Australia’s Traffic Operation Centre, operated by Main Roads WA, is in a position to take the further step of active traffic management to improve real-time road management. I would like to conclude by thanking you – our members – for your support during 2014. This is a wonderful time of year when our thoughts turn to family, friends and all that we value most in our lives. I encourage you to remind those around you to be mindful of their safety on the road and, as a gift for you this Christmas, to pledge always to wear their seatbelts throughout the coming year. This simple act could spare a life. Happy Christmas and a wonderful and safe New Year to you all. ●

Join the discussion about the RAC and the magazine would hit me when I slowed down for the 80km zone. The truck tailgated me (and my young son in the back seat) for a couple of kilometres on Tonkin Highway before I came to a set of lights where luckily I was able to turn right. Linda Henton, Canning Vale

Crossing the line When I got my driver’s licence 40 years ago, one of the road traffic rules was that you could not change lanes at traffic lights where there was a continuous white line between the two lanes. There must have been a change to the rule that I’m not aware of, because everybody who is stuck behind a right-turning vehicle at the lights just changes lanes regardless of the continuous white lines.

Our winning letter

Another white cross When driving through the country, cities and suburbs, I frequently see white crosses by the road. These monuments are placed in remembrance of loved ones lost to families and friends, usually as a result of motoring accidents. Yet these crosses also serve another purpose too – they help us to remember to drive safely. As time goes on, sadly, we can expect to see more of these white crosses. It is a sobering sight. When I see one or sometimes more than one together, I am reminded to pay attention to my speed and my driving technique. Let us endeavour to prevent the addition of more of these white crosses by being better drivers and keeping our vehicles in good order. Ruth Magnus

What’s the number? We strongly endorse David Gore’s letter complaining of street numbers not being displayed, especially by businesses on busy roads or highways (Horizons, August/ September 2014). As he says, this is a very dangerous distraction. We are almost certain that there is a bylaw making it obligatory for street numbers to be displayed, if only to assist postmen in delivering. Martin and Diana Mathew RAC response: According to the Local Government Act 1995, Local Government has the power to enforce appropriate house and building numbering.

The four ‘A’s Twenty-eight years ago, as a learner driver, the most valuable thing my driving instructor taught me were the three As: Attention, Anticipation and Action. To pay attention to your driving, to anticipate

other drivers’ movements, and to take the appropriate action. I would like to add another one – Attitude. Put your head into gear before you put your car into gear. Driving is not the time for multi-tasking. Aspire to drive competently, give your attention to the job and see the difference. If everyone did this there would be a better flow of traffic and fewer accidents. Rhonda Garcia

Caught in a truck sandwich In response to the letter Learn to Leave A Gap by Nic Wallis-Smith (Horizons, August/September), I have been tailgated by a truck for daring to do 102km/h in a 100km zone. I couldn’t change to the left-hand lane as another truck was alongside me and I would have had to go even faster to get in front. And I couldn’t slow down to get behind the ‘semi’ due to the truck tailgating me. It was terrifying. I was scared the truck

RAC response: The continuous line rule still applies. “Where a portion of a road is divided longitudinally by single, continuous lines, into two or more lanes, a person shall not drive a vehicle across any of those lines”. (Section 127, Road Traffic Code). There are exceptions, including turning long vehicles, drivers avoiding obstructions and entering a special lane.

 Child car-seat check To keep your kids safe in the car, make sure you use the correct child car-seat for their age and size and have it correctly fitted.

MOBILE PHONE USE IN THE CAR Mobile phone offences are now on the double demerit list for drivers in Western Australia. As mobiles continue to be integrated with other functions and services, drivers should know how they can and can’t use their mobile phones in a car. Here are core rules from WA’s Road Traffic Code about when and how to use a phone while you’re in the driver’s seat:

phone at a traffic light, in a traffic queue, emergency lanes, bus bays, no-parking zone, no-stopping zone and similar places is not allowed.

l Using

l Use

Using a phone includes holding, looking at, entering information, sending messages, turning the phone on and off, and operating the phone’s functions. Holding a phone includes being held by resting on the driver’s body but doesn’t include being held by a pocket.

of hand-held mobile phones is not allowed while driving or stationary, but not parked.

of hands-free mobile phones is permitted, where the phone is secured to a mounting in the vehicle or electronically linked (for example, by voice activation or Bluetooth) and does not require pressing or being held by the driver.

l If

l Using

l Use

a driver pulls over to use a hand-held mobile phone they must use a place where they can legitimately park, so using a mobile

text, video, email or similar functions is not allowed, even if secured by a mounting or operated without touching.

a mobile phone as a driver’s aid, such as a navigation device or dispatch system, is allowed only if its use doesn’t require touching the phone.

Keep these core rules in mind as guidance in most situations.

Even when your kids are being transported by relatives or friends they must be secured in an appropriate seat that’s properly anchored in the car. When correctly secured, a child is less likely to be injured or killed in a crash than one who isn’t. A child car-seat must be used until a child is seven years of age, however, older children may still need an approved booster seat if they’re too small for a seatbelt. For more information on your legal requirements and how to find the right seat, visit childcarseats.com.au. If you have any concerns about your current car seat and the way it’s fitted, RAC will be holding a free child carseat checking station on Saturday, 13 December, between 9am and 11am. Bring your car with the seat to RAC at 832 Wellington Street, West Perth.

Our green team A team of 47 RAC people joined more than 2000 volunteers armed with seedlings, trowels and fertiliser at Whiteman Park as part of a tree planting event on National Schools Tree Day. Organised by Men of the Trees, volunteers from schools, community groups and other organisations planted more than 100,000 WA native plant seedlings in just one hour. The event was also photographed, filmed and independently witnessed in order to be submitted to the Guinness Record administration. Volunteers covered an area of 34 hectares at Whiteman Park to plant the seedlings. The RAC team attended as part of RAC’s community volunteering program. Part of the organisation’s commitment to serving the WA community, the program offers opportunities to volunteer with a range of not-for-profit program partners including Jawun Indigenous Corporate Partnerships, Men of the Trees, Foodbank WA and The Volunteer Task Force.

Kids and hot cars In summer, the interior of your car can heat up to as much as double the outside temperature in a very short time. Even if you won’t be away for long you should never leave your kids in the car on a warm day. When the outside temperature is 30˚ celsius, the temperature inside your car can be as much as 60˚ and most of this heat increase will happen within the first few minutes of the doors being shut. Your pets are also very susceptible to heat stress so the same rule applies.

Walk of fame For more than 100 years the RAC has worked to improve the way Western Australians move around our state. During the RAC’s Centenary year in 2005 a Walk of Fame was created to recognise those who have made outstanding contributions to motoring in WA over the past 100 years. The names and contributions of those inducted are etched in the stone on the pavement outside the RAC office on Wellington Street, West Perth. In 2015, as part of RAC’s 110th anniversary celebrations, we will be adding more names to our Walk of Fame and extending the field of achievement to encompass any area of mobility, including motoring, road safety, sustainable transport and alternative forms of transport such as cycling. Nominations are being sought for individuals or groups that have made significant contributions to improving the mobility of Western Australians, either in recent years or as far back as the RAC’s foundation. To request a nomination pack, including further information on the criteria, email sponsorship@rac.com.au. Nominations must be submitted by 1 February 2015. December / January 2015 Horizons 13

New RAC driver app is Go Following a successful member trial in 2013, RAC has launched RAC Go – a smart phone app for drivers that connects with a vehicle’s computers and external services. The RAC Go app, exclusively for RAC members, can be used with a device that is plugged into a port near the car’s steering wheel. It can access diagnostic information – normally only accessible by a mechanic – to provide feedback about the car’s health, how well fuel is being used and the driver’s actions, such as if they are accelerating too quickly. RAC Go lets drivers identify mechanical issues before they become more serious. Drivers can also evaluate their own performance to become a safer driver and help cut fuel bills. Other information available via the app includes fuel prices, where to find parking and how to avoid congestion. The device

also shows members where they can access exclusive RAC member benefits and discounts. RAC emphasises that the app has been developed specifically for pre- and post-trip use and should not be viewed while driving. The RAC Go app is available for most models of Apple and Android phones and is free to members. The in-car device, which unlocks all RAC Go driving features, is available by upgrading your RAC Roadside Assistance to Classic, Ultimate or Ultimate Plus levels, or can be purchased for just $99. For more information and to download the app, visit rac.com.au/racgo.

Pedal Prix The inaugural RAC Pedal Prix at the scenic Busselton foreshore on Sunday, 17 August, 2014 saw 36 human-powered trikes take to a 900m track over six hours. The event included 17 school teams from Perth and the South West. To kick start the Pedal Prix program in WA, the RAC supported a program to give a trike frame to each participating school team. The Pedal Prix program is a practical, mental and physical challenge that requires teams to engage in a design and production project to construct a three-wheeled recumbent trike that meets a strict safety standard. The comprehensive program also educated students about safe trike handling and encouraged them to undergo endurance training to improve their physical condition for the day. The RAC Pedal Prix was proudly supported by the RAC Community Sponsorships Program. To view footage from the Pedal Prix in Busselton, visit blog.rac.com.au. 14 Horizons December / January 2015

M

any family holiday-makers heading south from Perth are drawn time and time again to the busy holiday hotspots of Busselton, Dunsborough and Margaret River. But if you’re willing to venture a little further, head south-east instead to Bremer Bay and Esperance, and you’ll find a tranquil coastal region that offers a delightful combination of pristine wilderness, unique flora, unspoilt beaches and hidden coves. Heading south from Perth on Albany Highway, take a sharp turn

east after Kojonup, then south again at Jerramungup, and east along the Borden-Bremer Road to beautiful Bremer Bay. If you’re lucky you’ll arrive to witness a glorious pink sunset over the Wellstead Estuary, next to Bremer Bay Caravan Park.

Fishing paradise The park manager doesn’t hesitate to nominate the main reasons visitors are drawn here: “Beaches and fishing,” he says laconically. There’s certainly no shortage of sandy beaches or turquoise water around this tiny town. John Cove, Short Beach, Back Beach and Fishery Beach are all popular with families, while surfers head to Native Dog Beach and Blossoms, where beginners can take lessons. Black bream, mullet and crabs draw fishing enthusiasts to the Bremer River and Wellstead Estuary, while Fisheries Beach Marina has a jetty plus boat-launching facilities for sea fishing. Tom Long’s Bremer Bay Quad Tours offer excursions through native bush to the 6kmlong crescent-shaped Dillon Beach, only accessible by fourwheel-drive. You’ll receive a safety and orientation course before setting off, and a driver’s licence is mandatory, although passengers of all ages are accepted. The town’s second caravan park, Bremer Bay Beaches Resort and Tourist Park, has a swimming pool as well as a playground but there are also options for those wanting to stay out of town a little closer to nature. Tozer’s Bush Camp, 16km away, is surrounded by 280ha of native bush and has 11km of walk trails. Quaalup Homestead Wilderness Retreat is 47km from Bremer Bay and includes a chalet, cabin and units as well as spots for caravans and camping, but space is limited and cabins and chalets are in high demand, particularly in the holiday season.

families to enjoy this natural haven. The 330,000ha park, the jewel in the region’s crown, contains an estimated 1800 plant species (more than in the whole of the UK) of which 75 species grow nowhere else in the world. It’s also home to 200 species of birds – more species of birds, mammals and frogs than in any other reserve in the region – and in spring the coastline resembles a highway for migrating southern right whales.

Whale-watching In the park, Point Ann, 65km east of Bremer Bay and 30km from Quaalup, is a famous whale nursery where whales and their calves can be observed from a viewing platform. If you have a tent you can stay the night at the nearby St Mary Campsite, managed by the

Department of Parks and Wildlife and one of four campsites in the park. Nature sometimes gets in the way of the best-laid plans. I had originally planned to drive from Bremer Bay to Esperance via the national park, a more picturesque drive than the South Coast Highway, the main road to the park’s north. But rain meant the park’s gravel roads were temporarily closed – not because they were impassable, but to combat the spread of Phytophthora dieback. Dieback is sometimes described as a “biological bulldozer” because of the devastation it wreaks on trees and plants. Once in the soil, the disease remains forever and there is no cure. Because it can be spread in mud on the

Fast facts closure I took the bitumen and, although the route was undoubtedly less scenic than through the national park, the scenery was still superb. Roughly halfway between Bremer Bay and Esperance, Ravensthorpe is a popular stop-off for visitors heading to Hyden and Wave Rock, 190km to the north. The town has a caravan and camping park for those who want to stop and explore. Local sightseeing includes the Ethel Daw Scenic Drive, while trips to Mount Madden and Mount Short (four-wheel drive recommended) offer panoramic views as well as the chance to explore mining relics.

Where is it? Bremer Bay and Esperance lie within WA’s Great Southern region.

Getting there Bremer Bay is approximately 500km south-east of Perth. Allow about six-and-a-half hours for the drive with fuelling stops and generous breaks. Perth to Esperance is approximately 730km. Allow nine hours driving time with breaks.

When to go The south coast has a Mediterranean climate characterised by warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. It’s busy throughout the summer months and in whale-watching season – July to October. Spring is the best time to see wildflowers and Ravensthorpe stages a wildflower show for 10 days every September.

Don’t miss The Fitzgerald River National Park is world famous for a good reason; dramatic coastlines, superb beaches, a huge variety of flora and fauna and relatively few people. For road conditions within the park, check with the park ranger on 9835 5043 or 9838 3060. The Wellstead Heritage Museum, once the homestead of John Wellstead who settled in the area in the 1850s, houses more than 3000 exhibits. The homestead museum is still being managed by the Wellstead family. There is also a café-restaurant on site. For more information visit wellsteadmuseum.com.au.

You’ll find a tranquil coastal region that offers a delightful combination of pristine wilderness, unique flora, unspoilt beaches and hidden coves. undercarriages of vehicles, rangers close the park’s unsealed roads following significant rain. But in dry weather, visitors to Quaalup Homestead and Point Ann can travel through the park to the South Coast Highway, and then either west or east to Bremer Bay or Esperance. Some sections of the road are winding and travel may be slow, but the scenery is superb. As a result of the temporary park

Walkers should head for the hiking trail based on the old Hopetoun-toRavensthorpe railway line. Three stages are open, varying in length from 9km to 16km, which take from three to six hours for average walkers. Camping is available at two spots and there’s also a 14km trail loop at Hopetoun, 50km to the south on the coast. Hopetoun is also the eastern gateway to the Fitzgerald River National Park, and east of the town are several small national parks and reserves, as well as back-tonature camping sites. Some are only accessible by four-wheel drive, although the Southern Ocean East Road goes to Starvation Boat Harbour. Another point of interest is the Number 1 Rabbit Proof Fence, which ends nearby. Hopetoun also has a caravan and camping park, a good base for the Hopetoun Summer Festival in midJanuary or the Hopetoun Fishing Competition at Easter weekend. At Easter, a camp draft is held

at Munglinup, halfway between Ravensthorpe and Esperance.

Australia’s best beaches Drivers on the South Coast Highway entering the Shire of Esperance are greeted with a “Welcome to Australia’s Best Beaches” sign and you don’t have to drive far to find them. Continue down The Esplanade, the main road through town, and find yourself on the Great Ocean Drive — a 40km circular loop that takes in superb coastal scenery as well as many beautiful swimming and surf beaches. Walkers will also enjoy the Kepwari Trails in the Lake Warden Wetland system, with 1.5km of timber boardwalks and 2km of surfaced trail. Canoeists can take a selfguided canoe trail from Woody Lake to Wheatfield Lake. Offshore, the Bay of Isles Wildlife Cruise is a half-day trip to local islands where

wildlife including New Zealand seals, sea lions, dolphins and whales can be spotted. Esperance also has fun activities for kids, including a bird and animal park, a miniature railway and Acacia Gardens and Games, for crazy golf and other games. Fifteen kilometres east of Esperance is a unique WA attraction: a full-size replica of Stonehenge takes pride of place on the property of Kim and Jillian Beale. The semi-retired Beales say they have become full-time “accidental tourist operators” since deciding to erect their very own stone monument. The original Stonehenge is thought to have been built somewhere between 3000BC and 2000BC, but Esperance’s Stonehenge birth is more exact: the final stone was lowered into place on 26 October, 2011, at 3.15pm. Since then, more than 30,000 people have visited. “We’ve had people come from all over

Australia especially to see it,” says Kim. “One family drove all the way from South Australia, spent half an hour here and then drove back home!” The pink granite stones come from a local quarry and at 2500 tonnes are much heavier than the stones used to build the original Stonehenge. But like the original, they’re also aligned exactly with the summer solstice sunrise. About a 40-minute drive from Stonehenge is another of the area’s major attractions - Lucky Bay Beach in the Cape Le Grand National Park. Its sand has been voted the whitest in Australia and it’s also the beach where kangaroos come to sunbathe. If you’re in luck, you’ll get a photo to prove that all Australians love the beach, even the ‘roos. l Mark Irving was hosted by Bremer Bay Caravan and Camping Park, Hopetoun Caravan Park and Esperance Seafront Caravan Park.

f all the places I thought I’d never find myself, waist-deep in water at the top of the world’s mightiest waterfall, would have to be high on the list. Yet here I am. Just one metre behind me, the Zambezi River tumbles over a cliff, crashing down a 100m deep gorge. Its ominous, continuous rumble can be heard a long way away, but is not quite loud enough to still the voice in my head that’s asking, “What on earth do you think you’re doing?” Back on dry land, it sounded reasonable enough. We would take a boat to one of the many small islets that dot the Zambezi: in this case, Livingstone Island, from which explorer David Livingstone first spied the falls. From the island, it’s just a short swim to the Devil’s Pool, a flat patch of water right at the edge of the cliff, where we are told it’s safe to bathe – in the dry season, anyway.

Into the Devil’s Pool

The locals got it right when they named this place Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “smoke that thunders”.

The first part of the plan goes smoothly. It is when we come to the swim that our nerves kick in. The stretch of water we have to cross to reach the Devil’s Pool looks fastflowing and treacherous and the rope strung up as a safety line seems totally inadequate. Once we take the plunge, however, we reach the calmer waters with just a few strokes, and are happy to discover a narrow underwater rock ledge to perch on. Sitting comfortably as the river rushes past, we giggle at the sheer absurdity of it all. Our guide explains that during the wet season, with the Zambezi in full flood sweeping everything before it, this would be an unthinkable thing to try. I ask him to name the largest thing he ever saw swept away by the river. “Elephants,” he answers. Suddenly I’m not laughing any more. For power and presence, there’s no beating Victoria Falls. Even in the dry season, the water pours over the cliff at a rate of a thousand tonnes a second. It hits the ground with such December / January 2015 Horizons 23

force that much of the water sprays back up, creating a permanent cloud over the falls. In the dry season, the spray can reach a height of 400m. Double that figure for the wet season. The locals got it right when they named this place Mosi-oa-Tunya, or “smoke that thunders”. If you’re not up for a swim, there are several other ways to explore the falls. The most popular option is to follow the path on the clifftop opposite, which follows most of the falls’ 2km width. With the amount of spray in the air, it’s impossible to stay dry. I’m told that in the wet season, the cloud of spray can be so thick that it even obscures the falls. Another popular choice is a scenic helicopter flight. This gives you the best views of the falls, as well as of the upper Zambezi slowly curving through the landscape. The chopper does several slow circuits along the river and over the falls, ensuring that everyone gets plenty of photo opportunities. The closest town to the falls, Livingstone, exists largely to cater for tourists, and there is not a whole lot to see, apart from stalls selling wood carvings and local fabrics. However, it’s worth staying on for a day or two to experience some of the area’s other signature activities. A Zambezi River cruise is a

Even in the dry season, the water pours over the cliff at a rate of a thousand tonnes a second. popular choice, with options to suit every type of traveller. For those with an appetite for adventure, a whitewater rafting trip through the Batoka Gorge, below the falls, will appeal. Surrounded by the canyon’s high black basalt walls, you experience grade-five rapids interspersed with calmer sections punctuated by white-sand beaches. Having used up all my adrenaline

at the Devil’s Pool, however, I opt for a tamer type of boat trip: a sunset cruise on a paddlewheeler. As we sit back in our comfortable chairs and sip cocktails, we see hippos wallowing in the river and crocodiles basking on the shore. The sight makes me glad I chose a larger vessel. Having already notched up a helicopter ride as well as a boat trip, I round out my trio of transport experiences with a ride on the Royal Livingstone Express. This magnificently restored steam train offers a shot of old-school colonial elegance, its interiors fitted out in polished teak and leather, its waistcoat-clad staff ever ready with refreshements.

The five-hour dinner journey starts in the late afternoon, while the sun is still high enough for us to enjoy the view. We chuff through the suburb of Dambwe, where children line the tracks to wave cheerfully at the train. Beyond them, we catch glimpses of life as most Africans experience it. The sight of dilapidated lean-tos lining rutted dirt paths can be confronting for those who have never travelled in poorer nations.

Wildlife spotting Past Dambwe, the railway travels through one of Zambia’s national parks, a surprisingly scrubby landscape where we keep an eye out for wildlife. Spotting wildlife takes a bit of practice. You wouldn’t think a creature as big as a giraffe or an elephant could simply blend into the background, but Africa’s animals excel at the art of camouflage. As darkness falls, the staff starts serving a delicious five-course dinner, which includes some superbly cooked beef. By the time coffee is served, we’re almost back at our starting point. We have based ourselves at the Royal Livingstone Hotel, the only accommodation within the Mosioa-Tunya National Park; from here, you can actually walk to the falls. We love the hotel’s colonial-inspired

glamour and the sun deck right by the river, a relaxing place for a spot of hippo watching. What we love most about the Royal Livingstone, however, is the occasional wildlife encounters that are part of the national park experience. As we pull out to go sightseeing one morning, we pass some giraffes grazing in the driveway. Another night, as we dine on the immaculately tended lawn, a small group of zebra trot past. The animals are, of course, what bring most visitors to Africa, and a safari experience is not to be missed. Zambia’s safari scene is less developed than that of some other countries, making it a great place for truly wild encounters. In some of Africa’s most popular national parks, jeeploads of tourists queue to get close to the animals. In Zambia, meeting up with other vehicles is the exception rather than the rule.

Zambezi safari The Lower Zambezi National Park has a range of different landscapes, from grassy floodplains to rolling hills, which provide habitats for a variety of animals. Lion, zebra, antelope, leopard and elephants are all common sights. One of the best places to stay is Kasaka River Lodge, an intimate 20-bed property nestled on the banks of the Zambezi. The safari tents have ensuite bathrooms, and guests can choose between a garden setting or a wilder bush setting. If you opt for the bush setting, be aware that animals frequently pass through during the night – don’t be surprised if you’re woken by the sound of a hippo chewing on grass. In addition to regular game drives, the lodge offers activities including fishing, canoe and walking safaris. Finish the day with sundowners and a three-course dinner, and you’ll understand why people fall in love with Africa. l

Fast facts The deck of the colonial-inspired Royal Livingstone Hotel is the perfect place for a spot of hippo watching.

Where is it? Zambia is a landlocked country in southern Africa. Neighbouring countries include Tanzania, Malawi, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

When to go The cool dry season from May to August offers the best wildlifeviewing opportunities along with pleasant mid-20s temperatures. Victoria Falls is at its peak at the end of the wet season (March to May), but visibility is poor. You will see more between August and December, when it is also possible to swim at the Devil’s Pool.

How to get there South African Airways has daily flights from Perth to Livingstone, via Johannesburg.

Bring home Brightly printed chitenges, or sarongs, are available at local markets for just a few US dollars.

Story Jane Hammond

DAYS OF SUMMER As urban sprawl continues The way we to creep along the Perth were coast and holiday spots have long made way for suburban homes, Jane Hammond recalls the summer holidays we used to enjoy, just a short drive from the city.

S

ixty years ago a holiday for many Perth families meant packing the Kingswood and heading to the coast to stay at one of the many coastal holiday spots from Mandurah to Quinns Rocks. At the time, these small towns seemed far enough away from the city to qualify as a summer holiday destination. There were many holiday spots close to the beach where families would gather for the summer break. Diane Tonkin grew up in the 1950s and ‘60s and fondly remembers many summers at Miami on the Mandurah estuary. The family of six would spend weeks fishing, swimming and exploring during

the day and playing cards or talking around a campfire at night. “They were carefree summer holidays. We used to spend every day at the beach and go into Mandurah for fresh hot bread from the bakery,” Mrs Tonkin says. “We didn’t have TV. They were real family holidays and they were cheap holidays. We also used to stay in the Postal Institute units as Mum worked for the Post Office and families of the workers could stay in them. There was one at Safety Bay near Penguin Island and we would walk out to the island. “All of our holidays were exactly the same: fishing, swimming and doing family stuff together.” Retired banker John Gray remembers

holidaying close to Perth as a young boy and later as a teenager when his family would travel to Mandurah to get away from it all. Mr Gray says Perth was a very different place more than half a century ago and summer holidays were a mix of salt and sunsets, all within a relatively short distance from home. “In the early 1950s we used to go spearfishing for crays at Mullaloo, Burns Beach and Quinns Rocks, and they were just sand tracks in from Wanneroo Road,” Mr Gray says. “Mullaloo had a caravan park but it was as if it was in the middle of nowhere.” “There was an old plank road, made out of old railway sleepers, that went out

It was replaced in about 1951.” Retired teacher Ros Hammond remembers holidaying with family friends at North Beach. “It used to be a big trip, but now you can go there for lunch,” she says. “The site we used to go to was still there up until a few years ago but was surrounded by new houses.” As Perth’s population increased, so too did our preference for house and land packages, and many beachside holiday destinations became popular suburbs.

The same features that made places like Rockingham and North Beach favourite holiday destinations also made them very attractive places to live. Suburbs swallowed up holiday spots close to the city and beach holidays close to Perth became a thing of the past. Perth stretches a massive 150km along our coast and has spread east more than 50km. Our city is one of the lowest-density cities in the world and its sprawl continues. Perth had just 10 dwellings per hectare between 2001 and 2009 and was clearing the equivalent of 10 WACA grounds of bushland every week.

Social sharing As we continue to sprawl north and south, Perth residents are keen to remember the simpler times and have taken to social media to share their experiences and recollections. Facebook page Lost Perth has nearly 95,000 likes, a book and a reputation for reminiscing. Shelly Tonkin, a designer who works on

the page, says Perth residents are happy to share their holiday stories, with many writing about their time on local getaways. “People seem to be longing for something more simple these days and yearn for the days when a camping trip to the coast with a couple of cans of food was what you did,” she says. “The old-fashioned family holiday has a lot of nostalgia to it. People are particularly keen to share their stories about holidaying in Mandurah, and crabbing and prawning.” These days, Perth residents tend to holiday in Bali but driving holidays and affordable family fun are still possible without the need to board a plane. Good holiday deals can still be found in Mandurah and access to Bunbury, Margaret River and

PERTH’S COASTAL SPRAWL

P Suburbs swallowed up holiday spots close to the city and beach holidays close to Perth became a thing of the past. Dunsborough is much quicker thanks to the Forrest Highway. Head north and you can make use of the new Indian Ocean Drive to cut travelling time from Perth to Geraldton. Places like Moore River, Lancelin, Cervantes, Dongara and Greenough are still attractive and may be just as accessible as previous sites closer in distance to Perth were 40 to 60 years ago, due to our better roads and better cars. ●

erth’s footprint covers more than 6000sqkm, more than three times Los Angeles’ city boundaries and more than twice that of Tokyo’s. Senior Manager Policy and Research for the RAC Anne Still says a desire to take advantage of Perth’s exceptional stretch of coastline has resulted in a long, narrow footprint and Perth needs to introduce a broad range of housing types to prevent the sprawl proceeding even further. “Our preference for housing has been large blocks, while the most liveable cities tend to go for denser and more compact housing styles, building up rather than out,” she says.

Land-use planning “In 2012, the RAC forecast that by the end of the decade there will be an extra one million cars on WA roads and we also know congestion will be costing the state about $2.1 billion a year by the same year. “If you are going to solve the problem of congestion you have got to get the land use right. You must have good land-use planning policy that complements equally good transport planning policy, otherwise you end up with sprawling suburbs and a situation where transport infrastructure has to be continually

built just to catch-up to where the people are. “We need to manage the expansion of the city north and southwards and to do that we need to work toward a mix of housing types that includes family homes as well as more compact units or apartments in new developments. Part of the challenge is also to ensure affordable housing options are available in inner and middle suburbs and reducing the size of dwellings will help with that.

Managing growth “Perth’s population is close to two million but is forecast to grow to become the nation’s third biggest city by 2050, eclipsing Brisbane and eventually accommodating up to 5.9 million people. Obviously that means the city will need to expand and the critical thing is to manage how that happens.” Ms Still says the CBD is far and away Perth’s largest employment centre. But with urban sprawl so big, creating local employment beyond the CBD is vital to reducing the distances many people need to travel to work. The evolution of a more compact city will ultimately help keep travel times in check and ensure that, when we do want to get away from it all, escaping the metropolitan area is a simpler prospect. ●

A bad bet

Most people bet a few dollars at the races, but on Perth Cup Day, 1989, I upped the ante and gambled with my life. Did I win? I’m still here, but the odds were stacked against me.

A

perfect summer day turned ugly when alcoholfuelled violence erupted in the car park of Ascot Racecourse. Approaching sirens spooked the crowd and bodies melted away, leaving a trail of debris in their wake. My friends were involved in the mêlée and staggered towards me with ripped shirts and bruised egos. Aggression still oozed from their pores as they all piled into the car, Joel in the driver’s seat. After much swerving and swearing he pulled over, declaring himself too drunk to drive, and several friends hopped out, deciding it was safer to call a taxi. I wasn’t one of them. Ignoring their pleas, I remained ensconced behind the driver’s seat, the lure of food at Fast Eddy’s too strong to resist. Joel jumped in beside me leaving Sam to drive, with Murray in the passenger seat up front. We were winding our way through the quiet back streets of Joondanna when Sam dramatically increased speed. I asked him to slow down but he just laughed and accelerated harder. The car surged to 100km/h

and I gripped the door handle as butterflies dive-bombed my gut. Sam wrenched the steering wheel to turn a corner and I slammed hard against the door. The back tyres screeched in protest, lost traction, and the car began drifting right. Sam oversteered, but instead of stabilising, the car began fishtailing wildly down the street. I could see the fear in Joel’s eyes and my stomach clenched. I felt sick, realising with growing horror that the car was speeding dangerously out of control with no way of stopping. I prayed we wouldn’t strike another vehicle as I was certain we wouldn’t survive a headon collision at our current speed. I now deeply regretted agreeing to the lift home.

Life forever changed Sam’s attempts to wrest back control proved futile. Without slowing, the car left the road, mounted a kerb, and headed in the direction of a light pole on the verge. I screamed as Sam tugged the wheel sharply left again. The pole loomed and I braced for impact. The rear of the vehicle whipped around in a cloud of

sand and grass and smashed into the pole. I blinked in shock, dazed from hitting my head on the post. The entire rear-passenger seat had been crushed like a softdrink can and I was perched at an awkward angle in the middle of the car, sandwiched between Joel’s six-foot frame and seven metres of solid timber. From the time Sam pressed his foot on the accelerator to hitting the lamp post was probably less than a minute. My dress and bare legs were covered in glass from the smashed window. Larger shards had embedded themselves in my right arm, causing it to bleed, but I left them in, too scared to dislodge them. Sam and Murray appeared unhurt and jumped out of the vehicle to assess the damage. Joel moaned about his sore back and stumbled out. Impossible to open what was left of my door, especially with a light pole wedged against it, I tried to slide over to the other door, but when I attempted to swing my legs, they wouldn’t budge. I placed my hands either side

RAC member Tania Connolly at the crash site.

of my torso to help with leverage but my legs remained immobile. I focused all my attention on moving my lower limbs, but still nothing happened. My heart thundered in my chest and blood roared in my ears. I struggled to breathe and I felt as if I was suffocating. I cried out for someone to help me. The boys returned to the car and Sam coaxed the engine into life and drove off. I pleaded

with them to call an ambulance because I suspected there was something seriously wrong with me. They decided instead to swap the wrecked car at Sam’s house and drive to the hospital. Once we arrived at the house I refused to be driven anywhere else. I pushed my bloodstained arms through the smashed window and sobbed. A pair of strong hands hoisted me up while my legs

dragged limply behind me. It never occurred to me to remain still in case of a spinal injury, I just wanted to escape the claustrophobic confines of the car. Murray laid me down gently on the front lawn on my back then went into the house to phone an ambulance. It felt like I was lying on molten lava – white-hot pain erupted in my belly and agonising spasms ripped through my stomach. December / January 2015 Horizons 37

It’s been 25 years since my accident and while the physical scars have healed. The emotional scarring is harder to deal with. above: The car after the crash. right: Tania Connolly at her sister’s wedding a few months after the accident.

Was I paralysed? Haemorrhaging internally? Was I already dying? I didn’t want to die. There was so much I hadn’t done. Then a door slammed and Murray ran out of the house, knelt beside me and squeezed my icy hand, offering comfort. I clasped it like it was a lifeboat. A paramedic wrapped me in a silver blanket to combat my shivering, applied an oxygen mask and checked all my vital signs. I was scared. What would the doctor’s diagnosis be? I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair, I didn’t want them to open me up and shake their heads in despair at the mess. I closed my eyes tightly, trying to erase all the negative thoughts. At the hospital a CT scan followed numerous X-rays and ultrasounds.

Orderlies wheeled me in and out of lifts, doctors poked and prodded me, removed the glass from my arm and stitched me up. Five hours later, I was delivered to the ward where I received both good and bad news. I wasn’t paralysed, but I wasn’t able to walk either. The crash had fractured my pelvis in six places and ruptured my bladder, resulting in a water bag being attached to my right leg. This provided traction to enable my bones to heal in alignment. Pethidine was injected into my thighs every three hours to relieve the intense pain. I spent a total of seven weeks in hospital, dependent on the nurses to wash my hair, shower me and scratch the itches I couldn’t reach. I didn’t eat for 10 days. I cried a lot. Eventually I began physiotherapy, then hydrotherapy, and when I was

sent home I relied on crutches for a month followed by a walking stick for a further four weeks. At 23, I was reluctant to use a walking aid that would make me look like a cripple. Joel had chipped a bone in his spine that could have severed his spinal cord at any moment. He had to have an operation to have staples inserted into his spine. It’s been 25 years since my accident and while the physical scars have healed. The emotional scarring is harder to deal with. We were lucky to survive and walk away, and when things get me down that thought motivates me to be positive. Gambling with my life is not a risk I’d take again. These memories were stirred while my 16-year-old son was studying for his learner’s permit. Soon he and his friends will have their licences and in 12 months’ time, they’ll be legally allowed to drink. The combination of alcohol and driving can be catastrophic and I stress to him that the consequences of one split-second decision or one foolish act could change his life forever. My stomach knots when I hear brakes screeching and I hold my breath, waiting for the crash. I read one story very similar to mine – where a young girl died. That could easily have been me. Drivers need to be aware they hold their passengers’ lives in their hands and there are consequences, sometimes tragic, to their actions. l

Rules explained

Revisiting the road rules

Remember the Keep Left rule On roads without marked lanes, keep as far to the left of the road as practicable, especially when you are turning left or going up a hill. If you’re driving on a road with two or more lanes, and the speed limit is 90km/h or more or there are ‘KEEP LEFT UNLESS OVERTAKING’ signs installed, you may not drive in the right lane of these roads unless:

● you are turning right or making a ‘U’ turn and giving a right-turn signal; ● you are overtaking another vehicle; ● the adjacent left lane is a special purpose lane such as a bus lane or bicycle lane; ● the left lane is a left-turning lane and you are travelling straight ahead or; ● the other lanes are congested with traffic.

Emergency vehicles: what you should do What should drivers do when an emergency or police vehicle, complete with sirens blaring and lights flashing, approaches? Drivers must give way to, or make every reasonable effort to give a clear and uninterrupted passage to, every police and emergency vehicle displaying a flashing red or blue light or sounding an alarm Even when an emergency vehicle would normally have to give way to you – lights and sirens take precedence and you must give way. The simplest approach is to keep left, but if you’re travelling on a multi-lane road, move to the left as soon as you safely can. Drivers already on the left should make room for vehicles trying to move left. If you’re driving on a single-lane road, pull over on the road shoulder if you can. If not, stop and let the emergency vehicle move around you. Whatever you do, don’t panic. Assess the situation and always make sure it’s safe before you change lanes, pull over or stop. And don’t break any road rules while giving way to an emergency vehicle – it’s not OK to run a red light or break the speed limit in order to get out of the way. However, if clearly directed by emergency services personnel, you should comply, but be aware of the movement of traffic around you. ●

Slow down, move over The RAC believes the key to increasing roadside safety is the introduction of ‘slow down, move over’ regulations and laws. The roadside, particularly on high-speed roads, is a dangerous place for stranded motorists. For road workers, emergency-service personnel, police officers, tow-truck drivers, roadside assistance patrols and all those who call the roadside their place of work, this danger is constantly present. ‘Slow down, move over’ laws have been introduced in most states in the US and most provinces in Canada and require motorists to slow down when they see the flashing lights of emergency-service vehicles, tow-trucks or roadside assistance patrol vehicles. Or they should move over to another lane if possible as they pass the scene. In South Australia drivers are required to slow to 25km/h near emergency-services vehicles. ●

Report Stephen Williams

Better safe than sorry Stephen Williams investigates the best strategies for making sure your next used-car purchase is a safe one.

S

am is a 17-year-old with a modest $5000 budget to spend on his first car. With a mechanic friend, he has a good look around at the used-car market and settles on a sound, clean-looking 2005 Hyundai Accent. The deal is sealed when the car also gets the tick of approval from mum and dad. It looks like a textbook case of a smart teenager getting into a sensible first car, doesn’t it? But

what Sam doesn’t know is that the choice of the Accent may greatly increase the likelihood of his suffering serious injury or death in the event of a crash. Sam’s situation is a common scenario – our most inexperienced drivers at the wheel of the least‑safe cars. When considering buying a new or near-new car, the ANCAP crash-safety star ratings, which are supported by the RAC, provide excellent guidance. The scoring –

from one to five stars – is based on laboratory crash testing, although the vehicle’s safety equipment and pedestrian safety are also considered. But what about older cars, including the cheaper cars many young drivers such as Sam are drawn to? The 2014 Used Car Safety Ratings (UCSR), also supported by the RAC, is a great resource for drivers in the market for a second-hand car. RAC Manager Vehicles and Fuels Alex Forrest says there are often December / January 2015 Horizons 43

Motoring

similarities in the star ratings for vehicles across the two ratings systems, but the calculations for the UCSR are done in a different way to ANCAP. So, although both ratings systems use up to five stars, they can’t legitimately be compared. “To obtain this year’s Used Car Safety Ratings results, the Monash University Accident Research Centre analysed data from more than seven million reallife Australian and New Zealand crashes between 1987 and 2012 that had been reported to the police,” he says. “For each incident the researchers studied the year and model of the car, the nature of the accident, and the type and degree of injuries sustained.” The latest UCSR guide includes 227 of the most popular passenger and light-commercial vehicles up to about 20 years old, the average

lifetime of a used vehicle. The categories are light, small, medium and large cars, people movers, three sizes of SUVs, utes and vans. The good news for buyers is that 52 per cent of the rated vehicles scored at least a four-star rating. And if you do your homework, those safer-rated used cars may not cost any more to buy than the one, two or three-star alternatives.

An invaluable guide Mr Forrest says the wide variety of safety ratings show how important the UCSR guide can be when searching for a safe second-hand vehicle. “This information is invaluable for mums and dads who want to buy a vehicle for their child, or for people looking to upgrade or buy a second car,” Mr Forrest says. “This year’s results also show us that a large number of top-rating

vehicles are available on the second-hand market for under $10,000, so safety doesn’t have to be compromised by price.” The RAC recommends buyers use the UCSR guide to help them compile a shopping list of safer second-hand cars. Most buyers should be able to do even better than a four-star car, given that 68 cars of the 227 cars gained five stars and, of those 68, 34 were awarded the pinnacle rating – a Safe Pick. Safe Pick cars need to meet several criteria: achieve a five-star UCSR; be fitted with electronic

stability control, which seeks to automatically correct and slow a car that would otherwise be in danger of skidding out of control; and perform well in minimising injury to other road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists in the event of a crash. Back to Sam and that $5000 car. It turns out that the 2000-06 Hyundai Accent is one of 55 cars that achieved a lamentable onestar score in the 2014 UCSR. But if Sam had consulted the UCSR, the Accent could have been eliminated along with other one-star small cars including the 2000-05 Kia Rio, the 1995-2002 Suzuki Baleno and the 1997-2003 Daewoo Lanos. In fact, Sam would have discovered a five-star Safe Pick small car – the Peugeot 307 from 2001-03 – was within budget. A five-star option for him would have been a 2001 Volvo S40, while fourstar choices include early-2000s models of the Ford Focus, Honda Civic and Subaru Impreza. Had Sam’s budget been as much as $10,000, there would have been a choice of six affordable small-cars in the Safe Picks category. Viable options for Sam’s shopping list would have included

up to six-year-old versions of the Holden Cruze, Honda Civic, Subaru Impreza, Peugeot 307, Volkswagen Golf and Toyota Prius. Of great concern is that no light cars – which are especially popular with young people – do better than a three-star rating. In fact, of the 26 light cars rated, 20 were rated as just one-star.

Size does matter Some of these one-star light cars are not dinosaurs from the 1990s, either. Popular recent-model examples include the 2002-11 Hyundai Getz, 2003-05 Daihatsu Charade and 1999-2005 Toyota Echo. “In a crash, where a large car impacts with a light one, size matters and the law of physics does apply,” Mr Forrest says. “This is clear from the percentage of vehicles awarded five stars in the various UCSR segments. “It’s zero per cent for light cars, 15 for small cars, 32 for mid-sizers and 43 for large cars. “There’s a similar pattern with SUVs – just 11 per cent of compact models get five stars but it’s 52 for mediums and 57 for large versions.” “This emphasises the importance of checking independent safety ratings,” Mr Forrest said. l

Is it really yours? Don’t let the excitement of buying a second-hand car end in tears. Your pride and joy could be repossessed if money is owing on it to a financier from a previous owner. When buying from a private seller always check that the vehicle is free from encumbrances. It’s a simple task – online, quick and inexpensive. Go to the Personal Properties Security Register at ppsr.gov.au and enter one of the following vehicle identifiers: vehicle identification number, chassis number or manufacturers number. It’s safer to do this check yourself and not to rely on a certificate provided by the seller. Registered dealers should always perform a PPSR check on the buyer’s behalf, but always check with the dealer to make sure it has been done.

This year’s results show that a large number of top-rating vehicles are available on the secondhand market for under $10,000, so safety doesn’t have to be compromised by price. December / January 2015 Horizons 45

Proton Suprima S

O

ver the past two years, Proton has taken important steps towards improving their reputation for vehicle safety. The Suprima S hatchback has a five-star ANCAP rating, thanks in part to its front, side and curtain airbags plus ESC and seat‑belt reminders for the front seats. Pricing for the Suprima S starts at $21,790 drive away for the entry level GX, moving up to $26,590 for the GXR. The latter comes with extras such as leather seats, front parking sensors, cruise control and GPS. But there are several areas where the Suprima S could still improve if it is to become more competitive against the mainstream models in

the small car class. Some of those issues stem from the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine and the continuously variable transmission (CVT) attached to it. The engine makes 103kW, but even at low-speed city driving, a considerable amount of engine noise and vibration comes into the cabin and is felt in the steering wheel. This is accentuated by the CVT, which backs up the reputation these gearboxes have for making the engine drone on excessively. The engine also uses more fuel than average, drinking 8.8 litres/100km for the combined cycle in the official test. By comparison, a Toyota Corolla Levin SX auto has the same power but uses only 6.6L/100km. The Suprima S’ CO2 emissions

are also considerably higher than average, at 202g/km. The aforementioned Corolla emits only 152g/km. Keen observers will notice there’s a large badge on the tailgate, which says ‘Turbo’, with another badge right under it carrying the words, ‘Handling by Lotus’. Indeed Lotus has had input into the car’s suspension tuning, and its handling and grip is reasonable but not class leading.

There were quality issues with our test car, such as the interior clock, which reset every time the car was turned off, and the touchscreen, which was lacking in contrast and resolution and was occasionally glitchy. Clearly, the Suprima S represents a big leap forward in safety and features for a brand that really needed it, though opportunities for further refinements remain. l

Audi S3 sedan

A

fter driving the Audi A3 1.8 TFSI quattro sedan at its launch, in January 2014, no one stepped out of it and said, “Gee, what this thing really needs is even bigger wheels and another 64kW.” It was already a tonne of fun. The tautly drawn, sharphandling small sedan boasted a healthy 132kW, all-wheel drive and the best interior in the business. Apart from a smoother ride, it was difficult to imagine how this whippy little sedan could be further improved. We all knew what was coming though, and it had the 206kW engine from the Volkswagen Golf R, a lower stance and a shorter wheelbase. It’s called

the S3 sedan and it is indeed a proper sports sedan. Alhough this is the first S3 sedan, it trades on the S3 nameplate that was so well established in sportback (Audi-speak for hatchback) form. Exquisitely wrought metals adorn the interior, such as the aluminium surrounds on the air vents, which don’t just look good. Like a garden hose nozzle, they can be adjusted to give a strong, narrow squirt of air or a wider, more gentle breeze. Even the foot pedals are so beautifully designed and polished, it seemed a shame to put my dirty hoof on them. Steering feel is excellent and the car points so responsively into corners that you’re

constantly yearning for winding roads. One of the S3’s best assets is its magnetically adjustable suspension, which is available as an option as part of the ($4990) S performance package and gives drivers a choice of damper rates to suit their mood. As well as that suspension, the S performance package includes a Bang & Olufsen sound system, 19-inch wheels, sports seats with diamond-

pattern stitching and LED headlights. Safety cred is good, with the expected electronic assistants and a rear camera as standard. On face value, it seems like a lot of money for a small sedan. Factor in the sweet balance between handling and everyday liveability, plus Audi’s standard-issue brilliant interior and a lengthy equipment list, and you begin to see where the dollars go. l December / January 2015 Horizons 47

Test drive The 3.0-litre diesel V6 makes perfect sense, especially given its silky smoothness and strong torque.

Land Rover Discovery SCV6 SE

F

or years, a torque-y turbo diesel engine has been the default powerplant for the majority of Land Rover Discoveries on the road. Given its off-roading intent and sheer size, the 3.0-litre diesel V6 makes perfect sense, especially given its silky smoothness and strong torque. Then we saw the introduction of the SCV6, a supercharged V6 petrol engine that took the place of the thirsty and slow-selling 5.0-litre V8 petrol Discovery in June 2014. The SCV6 brings with it some of the technology from the V8, such as direct fuel injection and all-aluminium construction. It also introduces forced induction, which helps it push out 250kW at 6500rpm and 450Nm

between 3500 and 5000rpm. As you’d expect, those outputs are less than the V8’s 276kW and 510Nm, but not by much, which is impressive given the V6 is a considerably smaller engine. The other significant advantage brought by the supercharged V6 is its fuel efficiency and emissions, which compared to the V8 are down 18 per cent and 15 per cent respectively. Further, the V6’s four-valve cylinder heads are made of recycled aluminium. Still, when compared to the diesel, the petrol V6 uses more fuel and produces more CO2 emissions. The petrol Discovery is completely different to drive compared with the diesel. Instead of the diesel’s muted deep rumble and huge torque

that’s available from virtually standstill, the V6 brings a supercharger whine, though it’s far from intrusive. Power and torque delivery from the petrol powerplant is much more linear, rather than coming in the one big helping at low revs as it does in the diesel. The other features that make the Discovery the success it has been for so long are also present in the petrol V6 incarnation. Like its diesel

siblings, the petrol V6 sends its power through an eight-speed gearbox – controlled manually by paddle shifters – and then through a two-speed transfer case. Land Rover’s proven and much-imitated Terrain Select off-road drive mode functionality remains in the petrol version, and is among its best assets, along with its brilliant visibility from all seats and good overall build quality. l

Skoda Octavia RS

Y

ou know those sleepy holiday spots that remained undiscovered and affordable for decades, then suddenly became trendy when people realised how great they were? The Skoda Octavia RS is a little like that, and it’s already started its transition to the latter. Launched in March 2014, the Octavia RS is the sporty version of the already excellent Octavia. The Octavia RS has a starting price of $40,290 drive away, which gets you a Volkswagen Golf GTI engine in a bigger vehicle for $5500 less than the cost of the iconic VW hot hatch. It’s 336mm longer and 73kg heavier than a Golf GTI (where both are petrol manuals), so its

agility isn’t quite up to that of the GTI’s benchmark abilities. It’s not far off though, and its excellent practicality, particularly in wagon form, will be a welcome trade-off for many. The Octavia is based on the same Volkswagen MQB platform as the Golf, albeit stretched to fit the Octavia’s dimensions. Still, the inherent handling goodness of this excellent chassis shines through. Compared with the previous Octavia RS petrol engine, fuel consumption for the Octavia RS is down by 17 per cent to 6.4L/100km. CO2 emissions are down by 16 per cent to 147g/km. Impressively, these decreases were possible despite increases in the outputs of the petrol engine, which is at 162 kW (up

15kW) and 350Nm (up 70Nm). In terms of cost, the petrol Octavia’s efficiency is slightly offset by its requirement for 98 octane. Nine airbags and a highly advanced electronic stability control (ESC) system help the Octavia reach a five-star ANCAP safety rating. The ESC system in the Octavia RS includes Volkswagen Group’s multi-collision brake feature, which automatically applies

the brakes following an impact to avoid further crashes if the vehicle is still moving. As well as the 2.0-litre turbo petrol, the Octavia RS is also available with a diesel powerplant, which makes 135kW and 380Nm. The Skoda Octavia RS is a highly practical and affordable sporty sedan (or wagon) that also happens to be efficient and great to drive. Just wait until the trendies discover it. l

What’s new

The latest news from the motoring world Evoque eco-coach

Lightweight latecomer After a gap in production of more than 50 years, Jaguar has started making a limited number of the rarest E-Type, the Lightweight. The Lightweight E-Type was a more powerful and lighter racing version of Jaguar’s legendary 1960s sports car. Although only 12 Lightweight E-Types were originally built in 1963, there were 18 chassis numbers allocated for the project at the time. Each of the “new” Lightweights will be assigned one of those remaining chassis numbers from 1963. The car pictured here is a prototype, with another six of the numbered Lightweights to follow. Juke far from boxy There’s no doubt the Nissan Juke’s looks are striking, but with subcompact SUVs still one of the most hotly competitive market segments, those looks are a clever point of difference. The Juke shares engines with the Nissan Pulsar, which means turbo and non-turbo versions of Nissan’s 1.6-litre petrol engine. Despite its high-riding looks, it’s more a city cruiser than off-road bruiser – at least in the mid-spec ST-S 2WD manual form we drove. It’s an easy and forgiving drive though, and at $24,965, that’s a lot of standout styling per dollar.

The latest iteration of Range Rover’s fashionable baby SUV, the Evoque, has got its green on. The Evoque has a feature that shows you how much extra fuel you use when you turn on or adjust the air conditioning. So, when you turn on the A/C, or turn it up, the extra fuel consumption is indicated on the touchscreen on the dash. It’s not unique, but it’s clever. The new Evoque also comes with a nine-speed gearbox, built by the German transmission specialist ZF. The same ‘box is in the new Jeep Cherokee, but it’s more willing to kick down in the Evoque. In reality, you’ll only use eight of those speeds, but for some, one-upmanship means a lot.

A date with ANCAP The Australasian New Car Assessment Program, better known as ANCAP, has added a date stamp to its vehicle safety ratings so consumers will know which safety requirements each car has been tested against. Each year, ANCAP raises the bar for its safety ratings to encourage continuous improvement in vehicle-safety design. For example, it will be more difficult for a vehicle to achieve a five-star rating in 2015 than in 2014. The date stamp component of the ANCAP rating will inform consumers which year’s rating requirements the vehicle was tested against. ANCAP has said date stamps will not be applied to ratings retrospectively.

Our experts answer your questions

You can be a winner

On cruise control

Q

I purchased a new Honda CRV in 2010 and it is the first vehicle I have owned that has cruise control. Whilst Perth’s often congested roads don’t make it feasible to use it regularly, it sometimes appears that cruise control marginally improves fuel consumption on a non-disruptive trip compared to not using the facility. Is there any evidence to support this?

Adrian Reading, Yokine

A: Naturally, fuel

consumption can be affected by changing the position of the throttle regularly. On a long trip, where the vehicle’s speed can be kept constant, cruise control is useful in reducing fuel consumption because it helps keep the throttle at a constant opening. When there is a need for a change in throttle, this typically takes place more gradually than would be the case without cruise control engaged. On flat roads, this generally results in better fuel

consumption. In hilly areas, intervention by the driver is often required to maximise fuel economy because drivers can usually make better use of the vehicle’s momentum.

Brake shuddering

Q

I drive a 2009 Toyota Camry and recently there has been some shuddering in the ABS brakes. I don’t remember noticing this when the car was newer except under severe braking. Is it cause for concern? The car has been regularly serviced, but I only do about 11,000km annually. I am a bit heavy on the brakes at times.

Mel Leach, Lesmurdie

A: If your vehicle is utilising

the ABS with increasing frequency and your driving style is unchanged, it may be cause for concern. Checking your tyre condition for wear is important as low tread or old and hard tyres do have less grip. Alternatively, poor brake fluid condition can cause such issues. We recommend you have your vehicle checked.

RAC members are entitled to a 30-minute fault diagnosis at one of our nine auto services centres.

Risky jump starts

Q

Does jump starting another car cause damage to my vehicle’s computer system? And should my engine be running while the other car is drawing from my battery?

Kevin Walsh, Mindarie

A: There is always a risk

of electronic damage when performing a jump start but there are ways to minimise it. We recommend using spikeprotected jumper leads. Once you have correctly connected the jumper leads, do not start the car with the good battery. The engine of the vehicle with the good battery should not be running during the procedure. This helps reduce the voltage differential between the two batteries, which reduces the risk of a spike. After a car battery has been depleted it will need a full recharge using a battery charger.

Remembering a world record In December 1964, Britain’s Donald Campbell became the fastest man on earth after he broke a water speed record on Dumbleyung Lake in WA’s Wheatbelt region, shortly after breaking the land speed record on South Australia’s Lake Eyre. To mark the 50th anniversary of Campbell’s remarkable world record, several events will be held in Dumbleyung in December 2014, including a special New Year’s Eve celebration.

The lake is the largest open lake in WA’s southwest and at 13km in length was an ideal runway for Campbell’s record attempt. Campbell reached a top speed of 444.66km/h in his jetpowered hydroplane boat Bluebird K7. If you’d like to be part of the 50th anniversary events you can find out more about what’s planned and where to stay at dumbleyungbluebird.com.au. Dumbleyung is 267km south-east of Perth.

Rescue in Coral Bay An RAC member’s recent Coral Bay holiday was saved by special attention from RAC Roadside Assistance. RAC member Mr Green was due to drive back to Perth from Coral Bay when he was faced with a flat battery. A jump start got the car going but Mr Green was worried about making the long drive home. He called an RAC Roadside Assistance emergency number he’d seen on a sign at the caravan park. The RAC Roadside Assistance operator, John, organised someone to go to the Caravan Park and recharge the battery overnight. Mr Green then planned to try to drive to Exmouth to get the car properly checked. The next day John contacted Mr Green to say he had information that the other

problems with the car were related to the battery and had also made inquiries and found there was a battery to suit Mr Green’s car available in Carnarvon. John then organised to have the battery couriered to Mr Green at the caravan park and have someone install it, all in time for Mr Green to return to Perth as scheduled a few days later. If you’re planning a driving holiday this summer, no matter which way you’re heading, make sure you have the right level of RAC Roadside Assistance to cover you.

GET READY FOR BUSHFIRES The risk of bushfire in parts of Western Australia has been declared above-normal for this fire season by the Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Centre. Residents should be aware that fire risk isn’t contained to areas of dense trees and forest; bushfires can also start in scrub and grassland. In metropolitan Perth. Areas most at risk lie in the Perth Hills and bushland along the Darling Scarp. Even if your home is some distance from a fire, embers can travel with the wind and enter your home through gaps in the roof, windows and doors and also through evaporative air conditioners. Bushfire season runs from November to April in the southern half of WA so if your home is in or near an at-risk area, you need to be prepared.

To find out more visit rac.com.au/upgrade.

Give your car a background check A survey of RAC members found that about half of those surveyed purchased a used vehicle without a mechanical inspection. Hidden defects in used vehicles offered for sale are often difficult to find.

RAC Auto Services mechanics often come across clever coverups, and some that are also obvious, when carrying out prepurchase vehicle inspections. To make sure you know exactly what you’re buying, take the car for a professional vehiclecondition appraisal before you sign anything. For full confidence in your used-car purchase, also consider a complete history check. RAC Auto Services offers car history reports that can uncover if the vehicle has ever been written off, stolen, damaged or has money owing on it. Buying a car with finance still owing on it from a previous owner could see you left without a car and out of pocket. Members can purchase a car history report at $10 off the recommended retail price (normally $36.95) through the RAC online member shop. Visit rac.com.au/carhistory.

THE DEPARTMENT OF FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES RECOMMENDS: l Clearing gutters and keeping your roof

clear of dried leaves l Closing in the eaves and other gaps that lead

into the roof or under the floors l Installing metal fly screens on your windows

and vents, and stainless steel open-weave mesh over your evaporative air conditioner l Creating and maintaining a minimum two-metre gap between trees and your home l Storing any kind of fuel and flammable material away from your home in a cleared area. Home alarms and the NBN The National Broadband Network (NBN) connects your home to internet and landline services, but if your security alarm is monitored it will also need to be moved to a phone or internet service over the NBN.

Keep your car battery healthy while you’re away Returning from a holiday to a dead car battery is an inconvenience you don’t need after a relaxing break.

In areas where the NBN ‘fibre-to-the-home’ network is being rolled out, most landline phone services, including the one your security alarm connects to, will need to be moved to the NBN. When your home is connected, new equipment will need to be installed to enable your phone and internet services to use the NBN. Because your security alarm monitoring uses your telephone landline or internet to call out in case of an emergency, you will need to make sure a technician connects the socket used by your alarm to the NBN.

To check when your home is due to get the NBN visit nbnco.com.au/rollout or call 1800 687 626. Once the NBN is available in your area, call your phone/internet service provider to let them know you have an alarm that needs to connect to a monitoring service. After your home is connected, confirm your alarm is working properly by calling your security monitoring provider. For more information about your RAC Security monitored home alarm and its connection to the NBN call us on 1300 360 504.

To keep your car battery fully charged while you’re away, simply connect it to a suitable battery charger and place it on maintenance charge. This will keep a battery that’s otherwise in good health from losing power while the car is not being used and ensure it’s fully charged upon your return. For more information on battery chargers visit rac.com.au/batterychargers.

Shoalwater Islands Marine Park The Shoalwater Islands Marine Park includes the waters of Shoalwater Bay, Warnbro Sound and a small part of Cockburn Sound encompassing several islands including Penguin Island. Look out for wildlife including Australian sea lions, bottlenose dolphins and the little penguin.

 Abrolhos Islands The 122 islands making up the Houtman Abrolhos Island group can be reached by boat or a scenic flight from Geraldton.
