TRAIL MATTERS

Craft a Year Full of Adventure and New Challenges PAUL LIETO
I believe I am meant to run through mountains, ride across desert dirt roads, immerse myself in the sea, explore less traveled paths, and actively engage in Nature. While on that journey maybe I can put a few sentences together that move others to pursue something similar, or better yet, to discover for themselves what they’re meant to be. I’m confident each of us is born with a desire to explore and be adventurous. It’s in our DNA. We may not all aspire to scale El Capitan, summit Everest, ride across America, or do something that’ll get us on the cover of a magazine, but this doesn’t mean our personal yearnings for exploration aren’t worthy pursuits. What is important is not to let the itch to do something pass without a scratch or two. We must do before the doing can no longer be done. “Someday. One of these years. When I have more time.” I’ve softly spoken these words in disdain many times over the accruing decades. Before this year comes to an end I’ll be 50. Fifty. Five
10
Event Guide 2019 racecenter.com
Zero. Five decades. Half a century. When I was in my teens 40 seemed over-the-hill. Now I’m still climbing to reach new peaks. I’m confident I have many good and active years ahead of me, but I must acknowledge that the years behind me now outnumber those ahead. Happily, I’ll continue to push my body, and mind, further. Gratefully, I’ll challenge my resolve and resilience. With awe and respect, I’ll step into the forests and submerge myself beneath salted seas. What I won’t do is wait. I challenge you, reader, to not wait. I challenge you to muster the courage and will to become the person you feel you’re meant to be. This may be a magazine for the endurance athlete. You may not find inspiration and clues to what you’re meant to be within these pages. However, you are reading these words so I’ll assume that a physical challenge moves you (literally) to be better. The growth a physical challenge offers extends into every facet of our lives. When you challenge yourself on the road

or trail you may find yourself better equipped to challenge yourself at work, within your relationships, and in your community. When planning the year, aside from organized events, be sure to schedule some of what I like to label “humble adventures.” For some, it’s important to have specific racing goals to keep us committed to our training, to test ourselves, and to engage in the community, but crafting yearly personal projects
is a good way to stay healthy and fresh, both physically and mentally. Humble adventures challenge us in ways that an organized race may not. They require more planning of routes, travel, sleep, food and hydration requirements, as well as challenge us to fine tune our gear selection. Choose projects that take you out of your comfort zone, but don’t jump right into stressful and anxiety inducing situations. If you’re a city road runner who hasn’t experienced trails in the forest or mountains, plan a few afternoon summer runs in some of the spectacular mountain ranges the Pacific Northwest has to offer. Then map out a whole weekend of adventure. This past year proved itself to be full of adventures and new challenges for myself. I raced less than I had intended, but I embarked on a number of humble adventures. It was a year of firsts because I made the decision to no longer wait. Someday became today. A girl and I spent a good portion of the year on the road. We spent the summer in the Eastern Sierra exploring its labyrinth of trails. We haphazardly cobbled together an attempt at bike packing. We put together an overnight
“Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be.” — George A. Sheehan fastpack trip traversing parts of the John Muir and the Pacific Crest Trail. We explored several miles of steep trails in Yosemite Valley. We drove to Colorado to support a friend’s attempt at the Leadville 100-mile trail run and afterward tackled our first lung-busting, thigh-burning 14K foot peak ascent. I share this not to get kudos from you on Strava, or likes on Instagram, but rather to demonstrate that we each have permission to craft our own humble adventures. How we define adventure is personal. The only requirements as I see it is to engage in Nature and to push yourself beyond your comforts in order to grow and learn.
My goal for 2019 is to again prioritize humble adventures, but as well, fill out my calendar with organized races that will push me physically and challenge me mentally. With that, it’s time to plan. It’s time to open our calendars and event guides and begin planning a challenging year of adventure and racing. We’ve put together several articles in this issue to help you with that. Max King writes about the task of scheduling the race calendar, Matt Lieto gives us some insights into gravel racing, and Susan Barrows puts together a list of Pacific Northwest marathons perfect for the newbie. Additionally, our event guide at the back of this issue is full of options from 5K walks to Ultramarathons to century rides. Get at it and keep moving, folks. You’re meant to enjoy this life regardless of age or ability. •

The Arduous Task of Creating Your Race Calendar MAX KING
I remember a time when I was a younger and doing a lot of road races, when you simply planned out your racing calendar on the fly as you went through the year. For better or worse, those days are over. Now we’re planning, developing, mulling over, and plopping down big bucks on those race calendars. I will confess that planning ahead is not my strong point and there have been many registration deadlines I’ve missed. Due to missing events in the past, I start thinking about the race calendar well in advance now - at least six and sometimes 12 months in advance. Here are some things to consider when planning your own race calendar and why it’s not always a bad idea to procrastinate on securing that race entry. First, I think it’s important to figure out your
18
Event Guide 2019 racecenter.com
goals and how they fit with the rest of your life. Yeah, I know, that’s the obvious play, but some of you have different priorities and your race calendar isn’t the first thing you think about in the morning. For many of you it is. Your goals need to be inline with your priorities. This will help determine how much training might be involved and if your goals are realistic given your priorities. If you’re trying to enter a race that feels very important to you and is difficult to get into, but you know you won’t have the time this year to adequately train, it’s neither fair to others nor to yourself to attempt that race. You won’t be happy with your performance. After prioritizing your goals, lay out all the races, events, adventures, non-running time-sucks (that won’t let you train), and other challenges that may affect your ability to complete these
goals. As you lay out races of interest you need to figure out what is involved in entering them. Is a qualifier needed, or entry points? Is there a registration lottery, possible wait list, or can you simply sign up the day before? Some events are easy to get into, some are not. Let’s assume, for the sake of laying out the calendar, that you have a big goal race such as the Boston Marathon. This is a race that may potentially take several years of planning to complete. Training is going to need to be on point, and you’ll need to finish a qualifier marathon. Go through each race on your list and figure out the entry process. Add the date registration opens as well as anything else pertinent on your calendar. If it’s a lottery entry, for example, you’ll probably want to have a back up plan just in case. Some races may never fill up and it’s not
ABOVE: No matter what your sport of choice, planning out the calendar is important to maximize the season. See gravel grinder feature on page 24. PHOTO: Adam Lapierre
important to sign up right away, but you may incur the cost of waiting when entry fees go up. However, early registration means you won’t be out as much money if you get injured or plans change. On races that I know will not fill up I like waiting until the last possible moment to register, but I’m also someone that likes options, and race directors really hate that. When thinking about what races to put when, how close together to place them, and how many to do, consider the following advice. I like to have, at most, two to three big goal races per year spaced somewhat evenly a few months apart. These are my “A” races and spacing them out allows for possible injury setbacks, proper training, and specialization for the distance, course, and conditions that you might encounter. These are also usually the races that become difficult to get into, so think about them far in advance.
For a person that doesn’t race much they may only have “A” races on the calendar. But me, I like to race, so interspersed between “A” races may be a few “B” races that I take a little less seriously. My training for “B” races isn’t quite as refined, and I understand that I may not do as well, but I’m still going to try as hard as I can. It’s a real race for me but training is still focused on my upcoming “A” race. These are also generally going to be shorter in distance than my “A” race. You can’t do an unlimited number of “B” events, but you can sprinkle in a few here and there. Try not to place them too close to a big “A” race, and leave plenty of time for recovery. If you just can’t stay away from your tribe and have a serial racing habit, there are “C” races. These are the ones that you can just jump into when they fit into your training plan and they will probably take the place of a hard, quality workout. The focus of a “C” event isn’t to race hard and do your best, but to be out there with your friends and still get in a quality workout. These are the races I generally wait to sign up for. “C” races are always going to be shorter in length than an “A” or “B” race unless you’re
doing it in place of a long run, in which case it should not be considered as a race at all, but as a fun, supported, long training run. Thoughtfully creating a race calendar puts yourself in a position to optimize your potential when you are focused on executing short and long term goals. Your body can only handle so much. When you attempt an “A” race it should be hard, it should take a lot out of you, and you should need a good amount of recovery. When you start planning for a goal race far in advance you will find a higher rate of success. When you put more thought, time, and sweat into that success, you will also find a greater sense of accomplishment. • Kelvin Trautman Photography

THE DIRT
Running Safely With Old Man Winter JEFF BROWNING
The temperature is below freezing and it’s still dark outside. The alarm goes off and you hit snooze, pulling those warm covers ever higher. Still, your training plan calls for a run. Winter running can be challenging. Cold temperatures, slick footing, and being forced off the quiet of the trails to the road are just a few of the obstacles we all face when training through the winter months. The good news is that there’s joy to be found even on the coldest days. It’s all a matter of perspective, the right gear, and some winter safety precautions.
Running on the Roads Since many trails are under snow in the winter, you’ll most likely be confined to running roads. I use these times as an opportunity to explore a combination of different loops and circuits in surrounding neighborhoods where traffic is generally confined to local residents. I like to avoid the main roads where traffic is heavier. Although the snow isn’t cleared quite as quickly in the quiet neighborhoods, local
20
Event Guide 2019 racecenter.com
traffic tends to pack the snow down enough to make it runnable with traction. If you do find yourself on a busier street, always run against traffic. That way you’ll be able to see what’s coming your way, and assess if individual drivers are paying attention to you.
Other Places to Explore If you’re fortunate enough to live near a university, run a circuit on campus. Universities have their own maintenance crews and don’t rely on local city maintenance to clear roads and sidewalks after snowstorms. Since universities are pedestrian-friendly, the campus crews are quick to clear walkways and paths for students and faculty. Cemeteries are another locale to check out in the winter for a potential run circuit.
Wear Bright Clothing Visibility is paramount when running in winter. Since you end up running on roads more, drivers need to be able to see you. Remember that drivers are facing their own set of
complications behind the wheel. Icy windows and slick conditions don’t leave room for additional challenges; don’t be one. If you are running before dawn or after dusk, invest in a good headlamp with a red blinking rear light for safety. Reflective vests are a good idea if you find your routes include a fair number of busy streets.
Layer It Up Layering is everything when it comes to winter running comfort. Above the waist, start with a base layer long sleeve and add an insulation layer over the base layer. Then, don a windproof layer depending on temperature. Mild days may only call for a vest (i.e., wind protection for your torso only). However, a windy, cold day will require a full windproof jacket. Wear a beanie that covers your ears and a buff around your neck on cold days. The buff can double as a facemask on those extra cold excursions. On your lower half a lightly insulated tight is my favorite. Hand protection is
OPPOSITE PAGE: Make sure to layer up during the colder months, nothing kills the motivation to run outdoors quicker than the bite of winter on bare skin. The author on a brisk morning run. PHOTO: Ryan Norman
Shoes and Traction I prefer trail running shoes with good tread for my winter outings, even if I’m running on roads. If you live in a location where temperatures stay below freezing, then snow
conditions may not require more than decent tread. However, if you get freeze/thaw cycles, traction is essential. There are removable traction devices like YakTraxs (yaktrax.com) and Kahtoola MICROspikes (kahtoola.com). You can also easily stud your shoes with a power drill and some sheet metal screws from your local hardware store (Check out my site for a how-to post: GoBroncoBilly.com/Studs). I currently opt for waterproof shoes with small micro-gators to keep the snow out when running though deeper snow sections. However, for years I simply bought my non-waterproof trail shoes a half size bigger, studded them, and wore a wicking layer sock in tandem with a wool sock over it to keep my feet warm. It doesn’t have to be fancy.
The key to winter running really is preparation. If approached using the aforementioned tips, the cold months can be a winter wonderland full of memorable adventure. Just remember to slow down, be safe, and enjoy the season. Giddyup! •

a must. I hate cold hands and opt for a mitten instead of gloves. On a particularly cold outing, especially long run days, I use hand warmer packets inside my mittens. Lastly, use eye protection. Wearing glasses in the winter can help protect your corneas from freezing (rare, but a possibility). It’s also helpful to avoid the glare of the sun reflecting off snow on a clear day. Tip: Wear your glasses on the outside of the beanie to keep your ears warmer and cut down on fogging.

CLUB NORTHWEST NOTES
And That’s a 2018 XC Wrap JULIA READE, NICK WELCH, AND MARK BLOUDEK
The start of a cross country race has never been more aptly described than by Drea Garveu, a long-time Club Northwest athlete. As she explains, it plays out like the beginning of any battle scene from the 1995 movie Braveheart: those going into battle line the crest of a grassy knoll, blanketed in a stoic yet electrifying silence. Piercing, determined glances are cast down the open field, plotting a path certain to guarantee advantage over the opponent. A loud clap shatters the icy stillness, and the warriors, their vision fixed on victory, charge forth with the fervor of a stampede. At the first XC battle of the season on Club’s home turf, runners donning the hallmark electric-orange singlets swarm en masse to the infamous hills and slippery turns of Lower Woodland for the Emerald City Open. Both the men’s and women’s CNW teams ran strong on a tough course to take first in their respective divisions. Next up: the 45th Western Washington University Cross Country Classic. Riding the Emerald City Open momentum, 65 athletes in orange singlets laced up their spikes and sailed through the sand of Hidden Valley Golf Course. Club athletes responded to the
22
Event Guide 2019 racecenter.com
stiff, collegiate competition with a first-place finish in the Open Women’s 6K and a fifthplace finish in the Open Men’s 10K. With the next race in Club’s backyard, the formidable sea of orange singlets at PNTF was nothing less than dominating. Bill Roe, Club founder and event organizer, helped launch PNTF in 1973, which has had steady participation of over 150 registrants since 2008. This year, PNTF anticipated a record number of over 200 runners toeing the line of the notoriously tough Lower Woodland course. Yet, no one could have anticipated the epic showdown in the Open Men’s 10K between Club athlete Joe Gray and Brooks Beast Michael Eaton. “PNTF is always a race I look forward to as it really does represent a true XC course,” remarked Gray. Although he entered the race with a bad groin injury, Gray still proved to be stiff competition for the Brooks Beast. “Joe Gray really set me up for success in some of my later races,” states Eaton, and adds, “Definitely one of the hardest XC races I’ve ever run and one of the most challenging head-to-head races I’ve run.” While Eaton ultimately finished ahead of Gray at PNTF with a crowd-pleasing sprint to the
finish, both athletes saw this experience as impetus for future competition. PNTF prepared Gray to defend his title at the Xterra World Trail Running Championships a month later, and Eaton for a seventh-place finish at USATF National Club Cross Country Championships. One more race lay between Club athletes and the highly-anticipated National Championships: USATF Northwest Regional Championships. For this year’s event, Seattle-area runners did not have to travel far and were met with a Magnuson Park terrain that required surefooting around increasingly slick turns, a hallmark of a cross course. CNW women finished five, six, seven, eight, nine to secure another first-place finish in the Open Women’s 6K. The men came in a close second to the Jacuzzi Boys in the Open Men’s 10K. Club’s Masters runners podiumed in both men’s and women’s divisions, proving that they would be a formidable force come National Championships. The 2018 season culminated at USATF National Club Cross Country Championships in Spokane, WA, on a cold and dry morning at Plante’s Ferry Park. With nationals just a short drive, a record number of Club Northwest

athletes competed — the most of any club at the meet. The open men finished 10th in an extremely deep field for their best performance in many years. Leading the team was Jono Lafler in 37th place. The open women finished 8th led by newcomer Erin Wagner with a 28th place finish. Club Northwest’s reputation as perennial contenders in the Master’s races only solidified in 2018. Cross Country season came to a fantastic end in Spokane at the Club XC National Championships. It was a record setting year in terms of participation. CNW had great individual and team performances in Spokane. The 40’s Women’s team finished 11th. The 40’s Men’s team placed fifth in a tough 40’s/50’s race, with Lance Thompson leading the way in 24th place. The 50’s Men’s team returned to the podium this year and finished in third, led by Carl Combs scoring one team point and finishing 40th overall in the 40’s/50’s race. The 50’s Women’s team podiumed as well with a third-place finish led
by Susan Pappalardo and a close supporting cast of Kristen Mossman and Regina Joyce. To top it off in dominating fashion, the 60’s Men’s team won the national title, with Joe Sheeran winning the individual crown, followed by Rick Becker in second place, and Michael Smith in fourth place. With the final XC battlefield projected to be blanketed in snow, the 2018 cross season
comes to is climatic end. However, the buzz around it continues. Some Club athletes rest, others jump into local road races, such as Club’s Resolution Run on New Year’s Day, while others begin to set their sights on preparing for the Boston Marathon. Regardless of what lies ahead, charging onto the fields next fall is never far out of the minds of the XC warriors in orange. •

Training and Gearing Up for Gravel Racing and Gran Fondos MATT LIETO
Over the last few years it’s become increasingly obvious that the bikes we ride on the road, the types of road that we ride them on, and the types of events we participate in are changing dramatically. No longer are road races leading the way. In fact, road racing is consistently decreasing in numbers for many reasons. It seems cyclists are no longer defining themselves as either racers or recreationalists. And you know what? I love it. Cycling isn’t solely about racing. Yes, I personally LOVE to race bikes of whatever form, but even more I value long solo days in the woods, fun group rides with new and old friends, and the places a bike takes me. For this reason, I, and many others, have switched our event participation over to gravel rides or gran fondos. Gravel rides and fondos are much more about a day (or days) on the bike in a cool place with lots of other fun folks that prioritize the experience of cycling over straight out competition. How do you best train for these types of events? Easy. Look at the courses and focus on your ability to complete the distance and cover the type of terrain you’ll be encountering along the way. Since these events are generally
24
Event Guide 2019 racecenter.com
more about completion and less about racing you’ll need to prioritize preparation for your surroundings and the course profile versus staying with the fast folks. #1. Make sure you are putting yourself in a position to complete the distance. Does this mean you have to and should complete the distance prior to the event? In my opinion, no. Would it be helpful if you had the ability to do so? Sure. Priority should be making certain you get your body as ready as you are able to while not tiring yourself out for the sake of miles. That looks different for everyone depending on available time and one’s cycling experience. Focusing on good base type rides with endurance as the priority is a great idea. Make sure to incorporate the adventure aspect into your training as well. Pack lots of snacks, a water filter and just point the rig somewhere new and go. #2. Make sure you have the technical ability to complete the course you are attempting. Most of the gravel events are pretty tame when it comes to the road quality, but not all races are created equal. Some races will be butter smooth pavement, dirt, or gravel, while others will be more similar to a mountain bike race with very rough roads or singletrack
with hazards along the way. Know the course and then put in some time on similar terrain to make sure you are ready for what the day brings. Gravel racing often includes some steep sections we are not often used to riding in everyday road rides. Doing a bit of overgear work (low rpm efforts) would be a great idea to make sure you are ready for the muscular type of riding needed for these steep pitches. #3 Make sure your gear is up to the task. For a fondo you’ll likely be able to ride your current road bike set up as it sits in the garage, but for gravel racing a little more thought on the gear will go a long way. Frame: Do you need a gravel bike? Probably not for most courses, but it depends. Your road bike would be suitable for some races like The Gorge Roubaix, but would leave you in the dust in tougher races like Dirty Kanza or Lost and Found. Your cross bike is definitely capable and likely the best bike for the job but there are lots of great new gravel specific bikes too. Besides, who doesn’t want an excuse to buy a new bike? Mostly, just make sure you’ve got a frame that is capable of integrating with the components suggested below. Tires: A lot of the gravel roads raced on could
OPPOSITE PAGE: The Oregon Trail Gravel Grinder event will be challenging but the course promises spectacular views and terrain. PHOTO: Adam Lapierre TOP LEFT: Prepare yourself for the often longer and rougher gravel races by putting in miles on terrain similar to your chosen event. easily be done with 25c road tires (I’ve ridden most of the gravel in the Bend area on a TT bike with 23c’s). Some races, however, will require bigger tires for comfort, traction, and durability. If it’s a mixed surface ride with lots of pavement I’ll ride the Schwalbe G-One Speed in a 35c. For races like Kanza or Rebecca’s Private Idaho I’ll use 40c+ with more knobs like a Schwalbe GOne Bite. And yes, tubeless in a no brainer. Wheels: Tubeless compatibility is a must as it allows you to run lower pressure and will keep you from fixing flats all day. I suggest a wheel on the strong and sturdy side over one that is either aero or uber light. A wide internal rim width is also great as long as it is compatible with everything else above. Gearing: Make sure you’ve got the gears to be able to pedal on both steep uphills and steep downhills, or fast road sections. I like a double front Di2 set up for more roadie centric courses and a 1X setup for more mountain bike-esque courses that have steep climbing. Being able to have a 1 to 1 ratio is a good rule for more rugged courses. Brakes: Disc brakes are not 100% necessary, but they are very very helpful. They are obviously far better at stopping quickly, which you’ll need more often on the technical courses you’ll find in gravel racing. More importantly,
without disc brakes you won’t be able to run the bigger tires and wider rim diameters needed for a lot of the courses. Now that you’ve got yourself and your gear ready for the race let’s talk about some events. Gorge Roubaix: This one is a classic Central Oregon event that has morphed in the last few years from a road race with gravel sections to an all out gravel race. Be ready for some loose sections and some very windy bits. The course has a fair mix of road thrown in to break up the gravel and give your hands a break from some white knuckle descents. It’s a fun early season race that’s sure to bring athletes from all over the country to Central Oregon this year. (4.7.2019 / www.oregongravelgrinder.com) Oregon Trail Gravel Grinder: This is a new race that is destined to be a classic. Think BC Bike race for gravel cyclists. The multi-day course is one massive loop around Central Oregon over five stages. It follows roads rarely used but perfect for a gravel adventure. Chad Sperry and the Breakaway Promotions crew will transport your gear and camping equipment to the next stage while you toil away with new and old friends to get to the next camp. Gourmet food, live music, good beer and a summer camp vibe at each stop will make this a race to remember. (6.19.2019 - 6.23.2019 / www.oregontrailgravelgrinder.com) Ochoco Roubaix: Starting at the fairgrounds in Prineville, riders head into some of the best gravel riding Central Oregon has to offer. There are some very steep pitches thrown in to keep you honest, but also lots of pavement sections to keep the speed up along the way. You’ll keep
that laid back feel of gravel racing as you are forced to stop at traffic lights on the final run to the finish where a looooooooong pavement sprint will test your inner roadie. There’s great music and food to finish the day and optional camping at the race venue. (08.24.2019 / www. ochocogravelroubaix.com) Rebecca’s Private Idaho: This is one of my all time favorites and one I simply try not to miss each year. Rebecca Rusch is an absolute legend in cycling and she puts on an event that brings all levels of riders to Ketchum over Labor Day Weekend. A unique part of Rebecca’s race is she offers both a stage race that includes three stages with singletrack, a gravel climb time trial, and the signature race on Sunday that also acts as a stand alone event. So many great people in one place always yields new friendships and new, fun experiences on a bike. Always looking to do more than her peers, Rebecca focuses on female inclusion and last year had 35% female participation which is unheard of in these types of events. This year she’s hoping for a 50/50 split and I think she’ll do it. Our sport will be better for it. (8.29.2019 - 9.1.2019 / www.rebeccasprivateidaho.com). •

The Best PNW Marathons for Newbies SUSAN BARROWS
It’s a new year and many of us have our eyes on big goals to go farther or faster, start a strength routine or try some new cross training activities. If a marathon is on your list for 2019 there is certainly lots to consider before choosing one of the hundreds of events around the Pacific Northwest. Most importantly, pick a marathon that fits realistically into your calendar. After considering work and family commitments throughout the year, decide how long of a training block you need to prepare. Talking this over with a coach or an experienced friend might give you a good outside perspective of what kind of a plan you will need, but usually eighteen weeks is pretty standard, assuming you are healthy and have a decent running base. When you’ve got a general time frame you can start looking at events based on location, weather, size, course difficulty, or even whether it’s a Boston qualifier if you’re inspired to challenge yourself! Do you want to wake up in your own home that morning or would it be
26
Event Guide 2019 racecenter.com
fun to make a vacation with friends or family out of the event? Do you want crowds and hoopla along the way, with a traditional expo filled with vendors before the event? Or, do you prefer something more low key but that still boasts great volunteers and aid station support along the course? Here are five great options that cover a whole spectrum of what you might want for a fantastic first marathon experience. If you can train through the winter consistently and have the base for an early season event, the Yakima River Canyon Marathon held on March 30 in Selah, WA, offers “exceptionally scenic” views as it winds downstream along the Yakima river. Yes, downstream means the course has an overall elevation loss of 371 feet, although there appear to be a couple of rollers. With just under 200 runners last year, it is a low key event but comments from participants describe it as warm and welcoming to all levels. One of the host hotels runs shuttles to the start and finish lines, removing some concerns about logistics. Plus, the start isn’t until 8:00 am - a plus in my book! (www.aasportsltd.com)
The Eugene Marathon on April 28 might be one of the more well known events in the area, but certainly deserves to be included in this roundup. I had a personal best on the course a few years back, and can attest to the pancake flat course and awesome support all along the 26.2 miles. They provide plenty of pace groups you can tag along with to try to hit a time goal, but with all the participants you’ll also have no trouble making a friend to help push you through the distance. If you’ve never experienced a race with first-rate entertainment, miles of spectators lining the street and lots of finish line fanfare, Eugene will deliver. Because of the history of our sport in the town, there seems to be an added enthusiasm amongst the crowds, similar to Boston. Unfortunately, historic Hayward Field is under construction this year, but I’m sure the finish line at Autzen Stadium is just as exciting. Eugene also offers a half marathon, 5K and Kid’s Duck Dash which makes a great weekend for your whole family to participate in, if they want to be part of your inaugural marathon experience. There’s plenty of lodging near the start/finish and of course, no lack of great

places to eat and drink before and after the race. (www.eugenemarathon.com) For another more intimate event, which might be less intimidating for some, Boise’s Famous Idaho Potato Marathon on May 18 is a fun looking pick! It’s flat, fast and a Boston Qualifier for you speedsters. Put on by the local YMCA, the race entries hover around 200, which means you likely won’t get swallowed up in crowds of competitors or have trouble settling into your own pace. There are half marathon, 10K and 5K options as well, so bring family and friends who want to run something shorter. You can also register under their team option at a discounted rate if you can gather ten friends, coworkers or family members that will commit to training and running the event with you. Unique finish line treats include what else but a Famous Idaho Potato Bar to refuel. Yum! (www.ymcatvidaho.org) Starting 5,630 feet above sea level at Timberline Lodge on June 29, the REVEL Mt. Hood Marathon takes runners down (and down and down) to below 1,000 feet at the finish line in
Sandy, OR. Fair warning: while all that downhill does make for a fast and less intimidating course be sure to train for the quad pounding! Still, with 4,758 net elevation loss, the event boasts one of the fastest average finish times - 4:05:06 - of any road marathon in the United States. Views of Mt. Hood never fail to impress and they offer free downloadable race photos to commemorate your run. I would expect pretty spectacular weather this time of year at Mt. Hood and in Portland if you want to make a weekend vacation out of it. Of course, you can’t find a much better collection of eateries to pre-fuel and refuel in the Portland area. (www.runrevel.com) The Pacific Northwest Marathon, held on September 21, gives you a little more time to get some training in and won’t conflict with summer vacation plans. This course starts in Coburg, OR, about as close to sea level as you can get, and winds through the Willamette Valley’s farmland before finishing downriver in the town of Harrisburg. The organizers “focus on celebrating the small and big achievements

of everyday folks” with free online and remote one-on-one training plans, inspiring speakers at the pre-race expo, and fun contests designed to motivate new runners to set goals, make plans and follow through. Race morning shuttles will pick you up from a couple of the host hotels and pace groups are available to keep you honest along the course. (www.pacificnorthwestmarathon.com) Other great options to consider include: Avenue of the Giants (Ukiah, CA - May 9); Seattle Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon (Seattle, WA - June 9); Timberline Trail Marathon (Timothy Lake, OR June 15); Jack & Jill’s Downhill Marathon (North Bend, WA - July 27). •

Disneyland may be the happiest place on earth, but Whistler, British Columbia, may not be far behind if you are an outdoor enthusiast. Year-round outdoor activities, a pedestrian-only village with shops, restaurants and abundant options for lodging make Whistler a Disney-like destination for everyone. “Located in the spectacular Coast Mountains of British Columbia just two hours north of Vancouver, Whistler is Canada’s favorite year-round destination,” said Bree Eagles, Coordinator, Travel Media for Whistler Tourism. “There are two majestic mountains with a vibrant base village, and every season has a range of possibilities for outdoor enthusiasts,

All of the courses start and end in Olympic Plaza so
finishers of all abilities can feel like Olympians as they complete their event. The World’s Trail Running Film Festival also takes place in conjunction with the weekend of running and features a collection of international running films. Later in the summer, Ironman Canada and Ironman Canada 70.3 (Half Ironman) comes to Whistler. On Saturday, September 7, 2019, cyclists will start in the lush forest of Stanley Park in Vancouver, cross the Lions Gate Bridge and ride 76 miles from the shores of the Pacific Ocean to rugged inland mountains where they cross the finish at Whistler Village. Participants can also choose a more ambitious route, The Forte, a 97 mile ride that includes a climb up Cypress Mountain before heading out the Sea To Sky Highway to Whistler. For those with less saddle experience, the Medio is a great 34 mile loop option that starts and finishes in Whistler Village. “The cycling culture is very prominent in the area, making it a motivating and fun environment to ride in,” said Tennessee Mayer, of Liv Vancouver, an independently owned store in Vancouver dedicated to increasing female participation in sports. “As for Whistler, for one, it’s easy to get to by bike along the Sea To Sky
highway (although a big ride) and provides stunning views of the local mountain ranges. It’s a challenging ride with the elevation gain, but well worth it.” The Sea-To-Sky Trail from Squamish in the south to D’Arcy in the north, links the Pacific Ocean to the snow capped Coast Mountains. It runs through Whistler and is a multi-use trail for year-round activities. “You could ride it with a mountain bike but it’s a little more interesting on a cross bike, especially when taking into account the few paved sections,” Tennessee said. “It has wonderful views all along and allows one to link up two beautiful towns, truly a great challenge on the way to Whistler with some significant elevation gain.” In Whistler itself, the mountain biking options are endless. Once the snow melts, skis are traded for knobby tires and the ski runs become a mountain biker’s dream. The Whistler Mountain Bike Park is a lift-accessed downhill adrenaline zone complete with 70 trails over four areas. Much like winter ski options, there are trails for all ability levels on the bike. Additionally, easily accessed gravel trails and paved paths throughout Whistler Valley offer family fun on two wheels (or three!) and epic scenery. Whistler has continued to expand its offerings with the 2019 opening of their 10-person Blackcomb Gondola for a more efficient and
weather-protected ride for skiers, snowboarders and sightseers. The addition of the gondola creates a three-gondola connection between the Village, Peak 2 Peak and the Upper Village on Blackcomb. During the summer of 2018, Whistler Mountain also debuted the 130 meter Cloudraker Sky Bridge, offering a “thrilling experience and 360-degree sightline of the surrounding Coast Mountains,” said Eagles. When visitors get tired of running, biking, skiing, racing, hiking or golfing, Whistler Village has dining options across the culinary spectrum and plenty of watering holes for beverages. Whistler and neighboring peak and resort, Blackcomb, are located approximately two hours north of Vancouver. There are regular shuttles from Vancouver International Airport to Whistler. “Regardless of whether you prefer to chase the snow, sun, or the seasons in between, Whistler is an outdoor enthusiast’s playground at any time of year,” said Eagles. •
