WEAVING

PRINTING

WRAPPING

IDENTITY

Weaving has informed my building facade which helps amplify volume and create a lovely weaving texture that carefully wraps itself around the building.

Salisbury Tweed building is applicable to the concept of printing. The weave lends itself to a narrative reflecting its identity. I.e The tweed facade reflects the process of making tweed inside the building.

Salisbury Tweed will establish its own identity as a fashion farming design campus. Its skin is the bronze tweed wrapping around the build.

The building facade of tweed wraps around the building and blurs the visual distintions between the front back and sides.

VOLUME

The building has taken a 2D form out of the same flat bronze materials which has been woven in and out of each other in a twill structure creating volume and depth.

GEOMETRY

The tweed structure is based on a 30x30 grid pattern which makes it very geometrical.

SHELTER

The building aims to reiterate this concept and the synergies presented between fashion and architecture. The building skin is representative of clothing and the bones as the structure in architecture but also as a physical human structure.

Salisbury Tweed Fabulous British Fabric

SHELTER The primary function of both clothing and buildings has always been to provide the body

with shelter and protection.

Architects have taken the drapery folds of fashion and textiles into fluid building skins, often taking a hard material (metal) and distorting and manipulating it into gentle curtainlike folds.

The use of geometry to generate form is shared by both architects and fashion designers. Simple forms such as circles squares ellipses are used in both disciplines.

PRINTING Taking their inspriation directly from fashion (pattern and texture) architects have choosen to wrap buildings in exuberant printed motifs, often to lend a narrative element to the structure, reflecting its identity or the context of its use in some way.

IDENTITY Both fashion design and architecture have long been used to express ideas of personal, social and cultural identity.

VOLUME PLEATING

Advances in material technology have allowed architects to reinvent what the skin of a building can look like and how it behaves, blurring the distinction between front, back and side facades and

CANTILEVER Cantilevered forms have been borrowed by fashion designers to articulate the surface of garments, manipulate volumes.

roof.

Both fashion & architecture deal with creating space and volumes out of flat , 2D materials. Increasingly, with the aid of new technologies and materials, each has been able to develop shared techniques that provide texture, form and volume in new and

STRUCTURAL SKIN

WRAPPING WEAVING Weaving has been adaopted by architects to connect the spatial volumes of buildings, and craft unconventional surfaces. Fashion designers are responding by using weave in increasingly architectonic ways, lacing, knitting and plaiting warp and weft together in unorthodox combinations.

Pleating creates unusual surfaces and helps to amplify volume. The sculptural forms and surface manipulation of these pleated garments have provided inspriation to architects.

In both fashion and architecture designers have recently begun to develop structural skins that bring the surface and the sructure of a design or the “skin and bones” together so they become one and the same thing.

intriguing ways.

SUSPENSION

FOLDING

Fashion designers have also borrowed the principle of suspension from architecture. Suspension in tailoring can refers to the way the peices of fabric seem to hang in the final garment, held together by almost indiscernable layers of handstitching, or describe a system of cables that hoist the fabric in a way that recalls the engineering of suspension bridges.

Architects use folding as a device to create greater visual interest through dramatic effects of lighting and shadow on a building’s exterior surface. In fashion the fold is being used in increasingly complex ways to give both structure and form to the construction of garments.
