Dallas
Dallas just put the finishing touches on three major submissions [Community Hospital East, Bryn Mawr Hospital and Walter Reed], one sizeable design competition and a series of design award submissions. We also started two studio initiatives focused on mentorship, education and application, and we are now using our monthly studio meeting to fold in our healthcare technology and OPEX resources by having each group discuss their part in the complex design of our healthcare facilities.
Seattle
The City of Seattle approved the CRTKL Masterplan for the Swedish Cherry Hill Campus this summer, allowing new projects to proceed on the campus. This campus is a neuroscience center of excellence for the Swedish Providence system. We are in the concept planning stage for two new clinical, research and education buildings on the campus for Sabey Corporation; total area is approximately 225,000-SF and has underground parking for 350 cars.
Washington DC
It’s autumn and the DC studio is gearing up once again to volunteer with the Architecture in the Schools (AIS) program. AIS matches volunteer architects with public school teachers to expand the learning experiences of children. This year we will be working with a 5th grade class to complement their semester-long study of inventions. Throughout the eight-week session, we will focus on urban planning, scale and sustainability to prepare students for their final project, which is to create an optimized city block.

Building, HT, Interiors and OPEX each took around three to five minutes to talk about WHY they love what they do. This approach was well received and allowed for more of a personal engagement and informative meeting, rather than jumping straight into our “what we do” pitch. Our goal for these meetings is to be invited in by one of these industry partners and to help them help their client solve a problem, or for the client to invite us in when they have a need for one of our services. Hoag and DPR are next on the meet and greet list.

On Wednesday, November 30th, John Jex retired or “assumed” a new position at J & S Vineyards in Walla Walla, Washington. We are sad to see him go, but are thankful for the 15+ years of guidance and friendship.
Picking up the WHY
Washington DC
The design for DC’s Kennedy Cherry Hill Patient Bed Tower project is in full swing, and the client is thrilled with the Samsung Gear Virtual Reality presentations. CRTKL is in the early schematic design phase showing the client exterior building and landscape options. Experiencing the model with the VR headset helps the client understand the patient/ staff/visitor experience and scale so much more than a twodimensional rendering. The team won the client over on the project’s below-grade courtyard, because the VR headset
217 217 showed the size and openness. Everyone is excited about moving forward using VR for the interior design.
HAPPY NEW YEAR
As the year came to an end and deadlines infultrated our studios, you might have noticed a “pause” on the WHY initiatives
