Introduction About Me

About ME: i am rachael gan rui xue, a graduate from temasek polytechnic studying diplomas in environment design.

Design Philosophy: Design is about being creative in our mind and it can be a form of art. a designer should bring in different ideas and create changes to the environment bringing in JOY and letting the world stay ECO-FRIENDLY. whenever I faced problems and challenges in my projects, i never give up easily and try ways to solve it. I am a person that needs to relax myself by listening to music or playing sports as those are my hobbies. Designing need to practise and try out more in order to get better ideas hence I will doodle whenever I have nothing to do so I am able to get more ideas for my projects.

Inspiration: I am inspired by surrounding things and tends to look into case studys of existing design done by various designers and architect, to come out with new ideas for my project. Currently, more hardscapes are replaced by softscapes, hence this motivates me to integrate more softscape onto the hardscape. I believe this will brighten the hardscape, attracts more attention and lastly, it will create environmental beneifts.

Garden with Memories

This is the overall plan for my project ‘Garden with memories’ It is a site that consist of north bridge road, crawford streer and rocher canal. the main focus will be jalan besar neighbourhood, an old estate. the site has been surrounded by different busy district such as bugis, kallang wave mall and the new national stadium. 7

Garden with Memories

Based on the demographic, there is a high percentage of elderly staying in the area.

There is low percentage of greenery on site, hence it is beneficial to bring in more softscapes.

Wind direction analysis was done to ensure that there will be wind ventilation to cool down the place.

Sun and temperature chart is an analysis to know at what point in time will a certain area be well shaded. this shaded areas can be a potential area to have activities.

8

Garden with Memories

Our site is divided into three phrases, First phrase will be area that is toward Lavendar MRT Station which is the Canal area and the block 465-468. second phrase will be block 1-9 and last phrase will be the Golden Mile Complex area.

A diagram shows to our site surrounding that are the CBD area or Area such as Bugis Street, Kallang Stadium, Kallang Wave Mall, Golden Mile Complex and ICA (Immigration Checked Point Authorities).

After analysing, I have choosen my plot of land which Is highlighted in the diagram (block 7 and 8 and some of the area at the back). it is a transition area where people travel from ICA building to Golden Mile Complex or the other way round.

Site issue:

- Pavilion space for people to gather mostly on weekends the spaces there are dirty due to user littering. - Peace Connect is a elderly centre to let them have activities such as singing. - Elderly gather there to chat with their friends or neighbours. - Many Paths are leading to the same area and most paths are too narrow that can only cater to 1 person to walk. - there is an existing PLayground area for children to gather with their neighbours or friends after school. - many Small pocket of spaces with seats are where elderly or foreigner will tends to gather to have meals or loither around. - those pocket spaces are only usable on sunny day as there is no shelter.

9

Garden with Memories

Design Process:

different design process has been done and all the activities that has been implemened into the space based on the issue of the existing site. the paths that i have created are will lead to a different space in that area and the paths are not too narrow for human and wheelchair bounded to access. 10

Garden with Memories

Finalised plan & programming:

11

Garden with Memories

physical model:It is about creating spaceS for the people there and bring in activities for the elderly. Importantly spaces created must be able to provide the user comfort. In the design, softscape is the key idea in order to soften the surrounding.

Section and elevation are done to show the spaces that will be use and how the tree can help provide sufficient shading to user. 12

Garden with Memories

Gardens with Memories is a design that brings in the past flavour through the material used and also the programs. the activities are sepak takraw,’chapteh’, five stones and chess. This design ensure thar there Will be sufficient shady area, user will be able to relax and enjoy themselve.

four different perspective of the different activities and also the entrance to the neighbourhood. 13

A overall plan view of my design with the existing Sports Activites. e A’quave is a project on water interaction, it is a place for elderly and families to come and have fun doing the water exercise, The reason why this project is more on water because based on research, doing exercise in water such as water yoga, pilates and pool biking are better compared to doing them on land and for elderly the best treatment for their body will be water therapy. many research have shown that water therapy can help people who walk more as it can help us relieve the aching on our leg. 27

e A’quave @KALLANG

Location Map of Kallang Wave Mall, it shows the surrounding building and routes of transport for the people to travel around the area.

THE CURRENT TRANSPORT AREA THAT IS ALLOCATED AT THE SITE. TRANSPORT SUCH AS BUSES, TAXI AND MASS RAPID TRANSIT (MRT).

Analysis of the wind direction in order to have the accurate and better wind flow to the site.

The current sport and water activities going on site which tourist and athletes are using it.

28

e A’quave @KALLANG

This is the existing site that was remain in my design, but I have redesign it into a small commercial area where there are small shops (sports related) and cafes for people to visit and chill.

Another view from the dragon boaters area but this view is more towards the left hand side which is near to Golden Mile Complex which is an old building in Singapore.

A view of what people can see while walking towards the site, it is basically road and plantation, it is kind dangerous to cross over to the other side as there is no traffic light or zebra crossing.

The current dragon boat association on site, it only caters to people that book the place and also student from polytechnics will usually travel there for training.

A view of the dragon boat area and the jetty that is no longer bring used, large area of spaces are wasted.

A view from the dragon boat area looking pass the reservoir with condominium and greenery. This view let us have a cooling and relaxing feel.

29

e A’quave @KALLANG DESIGN PROCESS 1.

2.

3.

Potential zoning area for more activites to be held there due to the wastage of spaces at the current site.

Segregation between the sport activities area.

4.

Bring in the residents to the site for some water activites/ exercise which are good for health.

5.

6.

Segregation between the sport activities area.

Benefits: Larege existing water body on site so that people can make use of the reservoir to have interaction with water.

7.

Different toning used to differentiate the different level of spaces. Darker tone is where the walk through area will be, and the lightest tone is the private area. In between will be places where people enjoy the water activities.

Pathways for people to enter to the site.Arrow different in size to differentiate major and minor path.

8.

A sketch to indicate people movement around, creating a beach feel closer to the river before it enters the water, so people are able to picnic there with families and friends.

30

e A’quave @KALLANG

9.

Exploration of the arrangement of the greenery to provide shelter to the site.

11.

Additional of colours to the plan to creates a joyful and adventure feel by differentiating every activities from each other.

13.

Trying to create different layer and decide on the entrance pathway for people, different leveling for water and land activities.

10.

A activities plan to show what kinds of proposed activites will be going on the site.

12.

Bringing in a second level of viewing deck so the people can have a different range of views and it also leads to the lower deck which is the beach area followed by the water exercise.

14.

Finalizing the activities and create pathways on the water level so that people are able to walk and they will be able to interact with the water.

31

e A’quave @KALLANG

This is a view of the entrance where most of the people will enter from this path to the dragon boat association and the water exercise area.

This is a the upper level where people can sit on the turf to rest and look down to the lower level which the water activites are going on. at the lower deck it’s the place where people can snack in the pool while they are wet, hence they do not have to leave the pool in order to filled up their stomach.

This is a perspective view of the underpass linking to the private area where the walls of the underpass linkage are textured so that when they walk through the can hear the water flowing downward. The water that will be used are from the pool biking area and the snacking area.

32

RACHAEL GAN RUI XUE e A’quave @KALLANG

Relaxation area where people can sit on the steps and bond with their friends at the same time play with the water, under this private area this is where the most shelter area from the sun. People are also able to swim nearby with their children.

A view from the dragon boat association where they can see the children or adults playing zorbing, it is usually played on land down slope, but it is being done in water in the proposed design. It is actually a transparent plastic ball where the people get inside and when they run, the ball will roll and start to move about.

This is a view where people can sit down on the turf and rest their leg into the water with steeping rock. this rocks enable and creates paths for the people traveling from one pool to the other. People are also able to sit under the shelter area to get some rest before doing other water exercise.

33

e A’quave @KALLANG

SECTIONS

A section cut is done to show the view of the pool with the shelter to show how people can rest and at the same time in the same pool people are allowed to continue swimming around as and when they like.

A section cut is done to show people interacting with the water in the river .

MATERIAL AND PLANT PALETTE

A section cut is done to show underpass linkage to the private area with the texture wall so people can hear the flow of the water. The reason for doing so is to bring in the sense of hearing.

Racgon’s Bridge @ Chinatown

HISTORY OF CHINATOWN: Chinatown is called in Chinese which literally means ‘ox-cart water’. It is called ‘ox-cart water as during the 19th century, Chinatown’s water supply was principally transported by animal-driven carts. During the olden days, Chinatown’s population was mostly Chinese residence. In Chinatown, we also have famous streets with meaning like Pagoda Street, Temple street, Mosque street, Smith Street, Trengganu street, sago lane and sago street. Pagoda Street - takes its name from the Sri Mariamman Temple. During the 1850s and 1880s, the street was one of the centres of slave traffic. It also had its share of coolie quarters and opium smoking dens. One of the traders was Kwong Hup Yuen who, it is thought, occupied No. 37, and after whom Pagoda Street is often referred to today.

Pagoda Street

Temple Street - refers to the Sri Mariamman Temple [South Bridge road] It was formerly known as Almeida Street after Joaquim d’Almeida, son of José D’Almeida, who owned some land at the junction of Temple Street and Trengganu Street. In 1908, the Municipal Commissioners changed its name to Temple Street to avoid confusion with other streets in Singapore which were also named after D’Almeida. Mosque street – named after a mosque located at the south bridge called, Jamae Mosque which was completed in 1930. In the early years, this street was a site of ten stables

37

Racgon’s Bridge @ Chinatown

Trengganu Street Smith Street - probably named after Sir Cecil Clementi Smith [Governor of the Straits Settlements between 1887 and 1893]. Trengganu Street - described as “the Piccadilly of Chinese Singapore” in the past, now forms the heart of the tourist belt in Chinatown. In Chinese, it is called gu chia chui wah koi, or “the cross street of Kreta Ayer”. The crossing of streets refers to Smith Street and Sago streets. The street name is derived from Terengganu, a state in present day Peninsular Malaysia. Sago Street and Sago Lane - got their name because in the 1840s there were a number of sago factories located there. Sago is taken from the pithof the rumbia palm and made into flour that is used for making cakes both sweet and savoury.

38

Current This is the place where people will always have their lunch or chat with their friends. It is also a place where most tourist will take photo with the background scenery.

Level 2 linkway to the bridge. This is the path where people use to cross from People’s Park Complex to Pagoda Street.

The long stairs that is the only way to get down to the Pagoda Street. Handicapped only excess to Pagoda Street is by Lucky Chinatown lift.

SWOT Analysis STRENGHTS

Shelters from the sun. Slopes and lift accessibility for wheelchair. Path guiding the blind to the lift. Plenty of people making use of the bridge.

WEAKNESSES

No accessibility of wheelchair bounded person to take MRT from Pagoda Street. Lack in guiding path for the blind on the bridge. Lack of shelter. Seats hidden at certain areas which could not be seen. Shapes does not blend well

OPPORTUNITIES

Having a lift at the end of the bridge of Pagoda Street. Having to grow evenly for plants around the sides.

THREATS

Limited areas of shade. Noise pollution from the traffic and shoppers. Maintenance of plants, water clogging the drainage system.

Case Study AN EGG-SHAPED TREEHOUSE IN CANADA The HemLoft is a self-funded secret creation that Joel Allen built on crown land in Whistler, Canada. After a social media startup he worked for shut down and subsequent efforts to retire at 26 failed, Joel began to take long walk through the woods; eventually this led to the decision to build a really amazing treehouse. when he started building it, he was just a fledgling carpenter, living out of his cae; Joel didn’t have money or land, so he used mostly free materials from Craigslist and built the structure on property that didn’t belong to him. After building a model to test its strength, Joel and his architect friends made the egg-shape mini-home a little broader in order to increase the interior space.

Cafe Shaped Like Toast This inspired building can be found in Little Hampton not of the UK’s most popular seaside resorts. As such, naturally it has become known as The Toast of Sussex. The East Beach Cafe was designed by Thomas Heather wick to look like slices of burnt toast in a rack.

Ena de Silva, House -Architect: Geoffrey Bawa -Colombo, Sri Lanka1960-1962 -The house was arrange in a checker. -There is very less plantation done. -There is a center point in the house. -Elements used are limited. -Plain, spacious and organized.

1ST MODEL AFTER 1ST SITE VISIT.

THE

A SIMPLE MODEL TO SHOW THAT THERE IS A SEGREGATION BETWEEN THE BUILDING AND TEBING LANE ITSELF AND THE GREENERY ARE JUST BESIDE IT. THE KAPALINE BOARD IS THE BUILDING AND THE ARTCARD IS THE TEBING LANE, THEY SEEMS TO LINK TO ONE ANOTHER DUE TO THE LRT (LIGHT RAIL TRANSIT) BUT IT IS KIND OF HARD FOR PEOPLE THAT STAY AT PUNGGOL TO GO OVER TO TEBING UNLESS THEY DRIVE THERE.
