PROJECT BRIEF: The brief was to design a small and affordable piece of furniture that is lightweight enough to be carried away. SCP aesthetic style must be retained whilst the manufacturing details must be kept in mind throughout the design process.

5 Degree Side Table
The design is a minimalistic side table that allows the consumer to work on its larger surface when needed and then move this work to the lower shelf which can hold items up to a 15 laptop - whilst keeping this discreet as to deter the idea of mess. The 5 degree angle on the legs not only adds stability and a utlitarian aspect to the design but creates a minimalistic embellishment also.
As shown the materials on the actual product are oak or walnut depending on the customers personal preference. I chose to do this as most of the products in the SCP boxed collection also provide this option.
The manufacture of the 460mm x 430mm table top is from 15mm oak or walnut with a 7mm chamfer to make it appear to be 8mm thick. The smaller 353mm x 330mm table top is manufactured from 6mm oak or walnut with no chamfer on this. Both are cut using a CNC router.
The space between the two surfaces is 86mm - measured according to anthropometric data. This allows ideal space for a laptop and for the average hand when placing and removing items from the space.

Morgan Modular Seating PROJECT BRIEF: The brief was to design seating solutions for reception areas and to respond to this brief in a creative and professional manner, through focused research and analysis, and meticulous design development.
Following research the design specification of the sofa included providing a seating solution for reception areas whilst retaining Morgan style aesthetics and qualities in all aspects of the design. The product was designed with consideration of high quality materials, manufacture and assembly, and takes into account anthropometric data. The main aim of this was to provide a calming distraction for an office waiting room / reception area. This was done through reducing the usual boxy designed office chairs and incorporating a discreet distraction ino the design.
The materials used include a metal frame with walnut legs bolted on, this is then upholstered with padding and a woven fabric acting as part of the distraction of the piece.
The walnut legs are angled to balance the angle of the back and arms to reduce the possibility of the modular sofa from tilting when leant upon. This angle is mimicked in all of the legs to create an even distrubution of pressure.
The angle between the sofa and the arm is 108 degrees and allows the sofa to be more open and reduce the anxiety of the user as they are not ‘boxed in’ as they would be in a standard office chair.
The distraction technique on the sofa was debated between graphics printed on the fabric to labels in the seams, but the final idea incorporates a subtle wobbly seam into the fabric. This will be repeated multiple times on the products to make it clear it is not a production fault but instead intentional. The contrast in the wobbly seam will mean it will stand out against the woven fabric covering the product, as shown above as a red seam on a grey fabric.

Valet Donkey PROJECT BRIEF: The brief was to re-design the Isokon Donkey. The Donkey must be portable, free-standing and provide storage for an area of my choice. Development through sketches and cardboard mock ups were essential.
Choosing to focus on making the Donkey function as both a valet stand and clothes horse meant the design incorporated shoe storage for three pairs of shoes, a curved piece of aeroply for the ‘clothes horse’, a hollow space for rolled up clothing, plus flat surfaces to allow small objects to be placed upon.
The curved aeroply acts as the clothes horse part of the donkey, and allows clothes to be thrown over but will not touch the floor due to the height of the donkey.
The hollow cupboard in the end of the donkey is a space for t-shirts or trousers to be rolled up and placed inside. This space is discreet whilst being spacious meaning it utilises the optimum space available.
The three compartments for shoes are angled to allow the shoes to be displayed but will not fall out.
1:1 Carboard Scale Model This full scale model allowed the dimensions and ergonomics of the donkey to be confirmed to check it was in proportion and that the items the donkey was designed for did fit in effectively with no issues.

Concrete Boading Ball Set PROJECT BRIEF: The brief was to design a set of artifacts that is solitary and tailored to my personal preferences. All objects created must be eminently appropriate to their function within my chosen ritual. The set of objects will be linked conceptually.
My chosen narrative or ritual was as a child when waking in the morning, me and my brother would go to my mother’s room and play with the various trinkets and objects. The one object we would play with in particular was a set of Chinese boading balls as there was one for each of us and they contained a bell that rang when shaken or moved. Therefore for this project I chose to design a set of two pairs of boading balls in a wooden case, that whilst retaining the traditional features would bring a more modern approach to the design.
The materials used include a mahogany box with a velvet covered foam lining, upon which the four concrete balls sit in grooves ensuring they do not move out of position.
The concrete balls themselves are made by moulding concrete mix in vacuum formed plastic balls. By using the same aggregate but changing the amount and therefore pressure inside each ball, the textures are all completely different between each boading ball. This in turn allows the user to choose which boading balls to use depending on the mood they are in.
The mahogany box itself is constructed of 5 pieces that are joined using a domino joint to create a clean finish. Despite this case not being like the traditional Chinese boading ball cases you see, it is a more modern take on this and almost acts as a plinth for the boading balls.
These concrete boading balls were manufactured using vacuum form moulds and filled at different pressures to produce four boading balls with completely different textures. The idea of these is to reduce anxiety and induce calmness through hitting pressure points in the hand, as boading balls were originally designed for. The choice of concrete over other materials was due to its ability to vary in texture and also its cool temperature which contributes to the calming effect.

Memory Snuff Box PROJECT BRIEF: Design a product that acts as an emotional arousal and provides calmness and comfort during a period of memory loss. The product could but is not required to ease physical ability, but should emotionally through easing the symptoms of memory loss.
For this personal design project I chose to create a product for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Disease Sufferers, focusing primarily on a key symptom within both of these of memory loss. Therefore I decided the design must reduce stress of user and make them feel comfortable, but must be a portable, pocket sized object as primary research showed the sufferers felt most uncomfortable or experienced more memory loss when not in a familiar space. By incorporating a familiar smell this would reduce memory loss of user and make them feel safer. These requirements resulted in the memory snuff box.
The lid of the box sits flush with the main body of the box. So that it is easy to use by Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Sufferers who often suffer with reduced movement, the lid can be simply lifted off, instead of struggling with a sliding mechanism etc.
The box contains a foam pad that is absorbent of oils/liquids and can be replaced when needed. The idea is that the user suffering with memory loss then smells this foam pad when they feel lost and the familiar scent should remind them of who they are and where they are from.
The scented oils are kept in corked glass bottles that allow the user to easily pour in the oil when required. The scents could range from smells in their home to scents they experienced in a certain job or calming location.
