Exec Officers – Job Description

1.

The General Secretary is the lead representative of the Students’ Union and has lead responsibility for Union strategy and development. The role involves:

• Directing the Union’s representative work. • Acting as the primary liaison between the University and the Union. • Supporting the activities of the Executive Committee. • Being a Trustee of the Students’ Union. • Attending NUS National Conference. • Having lead responsibility for long term strategic issues affecting the organisation. • Ensuring the dissemination of information regarding all aspects of Union activities to all of our students. • Consulting with students on issues and decisions – including going out and talking to students, and communication via social media. • Making the Students’ Union accessible and welcoming for our diverse range of students. • Upholding and promoting the values of the Students’ Union: Striving for excellence; open and inclusive; ethics and integrity; student led; creative and fun. • Running and supporting student led campaigns on key issues and decisions for students. • Working to achieve policy set by students at Students’ Union Senate. • Working in partnership with the University and holding them to account for students. • Developing and fostering good working relationships with key University Managers and Directors. • Be a proactive political representative of students. • When appropriate to working with the Students’ Union communications team to be a spokesperson for students and on student issues with the press and media.

The Activities and Development Officer gets more students involved in societies, developing skills and having fun. The role works with the rest of the Exec Team in:

• Overseeing and directing strategies for the development of Union societies. • Directing the Union’s student activities work including volunteering, media and student led events. • Instigating and developing new extra-curricular activities to broaden the range of activities. • Leading projects that enhance the personal development and employability of students. • Chairing the Activities Forum. • Being a Trustee of the Students’ Union. • Ensuring the dissemination of information regarding all aspects of Union activities to all of our students. • Consulting with students on issues and decisions – including going out and talking to students, and communication via social media. • Making the Students’ Union accessible and welcoming for our diverse range of students. • Upholding and promoting the values of the Students’ Union: Striving for excellence; open and inclusive; ethics and integrity; student led; creative and fun. • Running and supporting student led campaigns on key issues and decisions for students. • Working to achieve policy set by students at Students’ Union Senate. • Working in partnership with the University and holding them to account for students. • Developing and fostering good working relationships with key University Managers and Directors. • Be a proactive political representative of students. • When appropriate to working with the Students’ Union communications team to be a spokesperson for students and on student issues with the press and media.

The Campaigns and Citizenship Officer gets more students campaigning and leading on the Union’s citizenship work and works as part of the Exec Team in:

The Women's Officer works as part of the Executive Team in:

• Ensuring women’s representation on the Executive Committee and facilitating campaigns on women’s issues. • Directing the Union’s work on women’s inclusion, representation and welfare. • Acting as the convener for the women’s campaign. • Working with the University and other organisations to promote women’s liberation. • Being a Trustee of the Students’ Union. • Ensuring the dissemination of information regarding all aspects of Union activities to all of our students. • Consulting with students on issues and decisions – including going out and talking to students, and communication via social media. • Making the Students’ Union accessible and welcoming for our diverse range of students • Upholding and promoting the values of the Students’ Union: Striving for excellence; open & inclusive; ethics & integrity; student led; creative & fun. • Running and supporting student led campaigns on key issues and decisions for students. • Working to achieve policy set by students at Students’ Union Senate. • Working in partnership with the University and holding them to account for students. • Developing and fostering good working relationships with key University Managers and Directors. • Being a proactive political representative of students. • When appropriate working with the Students’ Union communications team to be a spokesperson for students and on student issues with the press and media.

The Education Officer works as part of the executive team and responsibilities will include: • Getting more students involved in genuine academic representation and representing the views of students on academic issues. • Directing the Union’s work on educational and academic issues. • Directing the Union’s work on academic representation to improve the experience of students. • Increasing the number of students involved in genuine academic representation. • Representing the views of students on academic issues. • Supporting the work of the Faculty Representatives.

The Community Officer works as part of the Executive Team in:

• Developing a stronger sense of identity and social responsibility across and between the student and wider community. • Directing the Union’s work on matters concerning student accommodation, crime, safety and as student residents. • Working within Halls to ensure their input and influence on Union activities and strengthen the experience of students in halls. • Representing students within the local community to Councils, Residents Groups and other community organisations. • Being a Trustee of the Students’ Union. • Ensuring the dissemination of information regarding all aspects of Union activities to all of our students. • Consulting with students on issues and decisions – including going out and talking to students, and communication via social media. • Making the Students’ Union accessible and welcoming for our diverse range of students. • Upholding and promoting the values of the Students’ Union: Striving for excellence; open and inclusive; ethics and integrity; student led; creative and fun. • Running and supporting student led campaigns on key issues and decisions for students. • Working to achieve policy set by students at the Students’ Union Senate. • Working in partnership with the University and holding them to account for students. • Developing and fostering good working relationships with key University Managers and Directors. • Be a proactive political representative of students. • When appropriate to working with the Students’ Union communications team to be a spokesperson for students and on student issues with the press and media.

The Diversity Officer works as part of the Exec Team in:

• Getting the Union and University to have a diverse and welcoming student body. • Directing the Union’s strategy and activities in making the Union and University more representative of International, Mature and Postgraduate students. • Liaising with and supporting Union conveners of liberation campaigns. • Monitoring and updating Union policy on equality and diversity matters. • Promoting and campaigning for equal opportunities within the university, Union and wider community. • Campaigning to increase the diversity of the student body. • Being a Trustee of the Students’ Union.

The Wellbeing Officer directs the Students’ Union’s work on welfare, happiness and health, and works as part of the Executive team in:

• Representing and promoting students to be happy and healthy at University. • Directing the union’s work on the welfare of students. • Directing the union’s work on developing good campus relations (e.g. between groups of students). • Working with local and regional external bodies on matters affecting student health. • Being a trustee of the Students’ Union. • Ensuring the dissemination of information regarding all aspects of union activities to all of our students. • Consulting with students on issues and decisions – including going out and talking to students, and communication via social media. • Making the Students’ Union accessible and welcoming for our diverse range of students. • Upholding and promoting the values of the Students’ Union: Striving for excellence; open and inclusive; ethics and integrity; student led; creative and fun. • Running and supporting student led campaigns on key issues and decisions for students. • Working to achieve policy set by students at the Students’ Union Senate. • Working in partnership with the university and holding them to account for students. • Developing and fostering good working relationships with key university Managers and Directors. • Being a proactive political representative of students. • When appropriate working with the Students’ Union communications team to be a spokesperson for students and on student issues with the press and media.
