Nike has probably been the most influential brand towards promoting women in fashion through sportswear and now into streetwear. Their consitent attention to detail and forever going one step further to uphold there brand ethos of ‘Just Do It’ has enabled the brand to reach new heights in promoting a gender equality through its fashion. Nike has been true to its roots and stuck with producing solid shoe silhouettes for years that also transcend through to the current need. Re-releases and forever bringing out different colour packs to everyones favourite shoe model is what makes this brand. Let alone do they keep this ethos going they also bring out new innovative technology that pushes the boundaries in many ways. Its new VapourMax is probably the most innovative soled shoe ever and its latest colourway tht touches the hearts of many promoting the gender equality of LGBT is just another way in which Nike are ahead of the game.

007 Nike has always gained popularity from its fans but bootlegger @Miniswoosh takesthis to another level. For a brand to have an impact on such an individual says a lot. Let alone does her work of creating DIY Nike pieces show her dedication to a brand that now endorses her. This cult like following is what shows that anything is possible within fashion and that everybody within the culture stays humble.

Alexandra Hackett also competed in Nikes latest competition: #VoteForward where several designers and creatives where asked to create a shoe silhouette that they would think people would want. Sadly Alex didn’t win, however her entry was something of pure brilliance and I for one would have purchased if it went into production.

ng Ape. bape - Tomoaki Nagao was the Japanese founding owner of the streetwear brand A Bathing Ape. Nigo began his career studying Fashion Editing at college whilst working as an editor and stylist at the magazine ‘Popeye’. He then borrowed four million yen from a friend and opened his first t-shirt store in 1993 in Tokyo along with Jun Takahashi (Founder of Undercover). Later in 1993, Nigo created the brand ‘A Bathing Ape’ with the name coming from the 1968 film Planet of the Apes. The name also relates to the famous Japanese saying “A bathing ape in luke warm water” relating to the laziness of the younger generation. To begin, Nigo created 30 to 50 shirts a week, half being sold and half given to friends and family. As time passed, the brand became more popular due to the likes of Pharrell, Kanye West and many other rap artists promoting the brand.

As stated, Nigo’s logo and designs all come from the basis of Planet of the Apes. The limited production runs boost demand for the popular streetwear brand especially when it comes to collaborations. Bape are known for collaborating with some of the most popular brands in the world. From Pepsi, Comme Des Garcons and MAC to Disney, Hello Kitty and even the band Linkin Park. AAPE is more of the loungewear, this means it is quite a bit cheaper. Personally I feel the designs are a lot more in your face and printed than BAPE, but I feel this is what attracts women most. AApe also use a lot more colours such as baby pink and very light blues and greens so I feel the colour also attracts a different audience.

Adidas Originals is at the forefront of clean subtle design work within its branding and advertising all the way down to the products that they create. Collaborating with several creatives and constantly bringing out crisp on trend fashion for females is something to be heard. Many sports brands dont cater for women in a way that Adidas do, as they are always make sure that even the slightest detail within there products fits the needs of its customers. Addressing many trends and fashion statements allows Adidas to be transcended across many social stereoptypes that want to portray themself with a little unique touch of class. Its collaborations with Kanye West has allowed sales to sky rocket and now with its reoccuring collaboration with Alexandra Wang is bringing in more and more.

Kylie Jenner - For those who may not know, Kylie Jenner is the youngest sister of Kim Kardashian who was made famous around 10 years ago after a sex tape of her and her ex-partner Ray J was leaked online. Late 2007, all of the Kardashians including Kylie featured in the hit reality TV show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians which documented the families crazy lives. Kylie has featured in over 150 episodes between 2007 and now as well as having appearances in the spin off shows, Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami. In 2013, Kylie and her sister Kendall announced they would release several clothing collections with Pacsun named Kendall & Kylie as well as their own nail vanish with OPI and a jewellery line. This is where here career really began. In 2016, Kylie released her own lipstick and liner duo named ‘The Kylie Lip Kit’. The kit was a huge global success which lead to her creating her brand, Kylie Cosmetics. Kylie’s main platform for promoting herself and her business is Instagram. With over 93 million followers, kylie uploads videos and pictures of her daily make up routines, high profile events and details of her upcoming releases. With Kylie becoming such a beauty idol to women all around the world, it was not long before she was noticed in the streetwear community. Kylie had always had connections within the fashion industry due to her modelling career with brands such as Puma and Topshop but it is only recently we have seen a new, more laid back Kylie. With her brother-in-law being Kanye West, we should’ve really expected at least one of the Kardashians to represent his brand Yeezy, but surely it would have been Kim, right? Wrong. Kylie has been spotted on many occasions walking around in various styles of his Yeezy V2’s. But this was not the only streetwear brand Kylie has been seen wearing. She has also been spotted wearing the Russian brand Gosha and a Supreme box logo. It seems somewhat unusual to see a Kardashian NOT glammed up in heels and a dress everywhere she goes and personally I feel that Kylie is giving a positive approach to girls wearing streetwear, showing that you don’t have to be dolled up to look nice. Kylie is opening more people’s eyes to the underground streetwear brands which is therefore showing girls that you don’t have to follow the typical stereotype of females wearing only high end fashion brands to be stylish.

North West is the child of famous rapper, designer and all round creative Kanye West and his wife Kim Kardashian. It has to be said that North is probably the best dressed child that is on earth right now. Many adults who are into fashion would quite happily take anything that she walks around in and say they own it. Her parents do have a lot to do with the way in which she is styled however her little characteristics and flair make her outfits that much better. Always being on trend North West is definately a prodigy in the making and one to watch out for no matter what she takes her hand to. The way she works her style and doesn’t allow it to break her childish fun is beautiful. Wearing many brands that are nearly double, even tripple her age is what projects North West onto a cosmic scale within fashion. North is one to watch out for in future fashion trends whether it will be fitting into one or setting a new one you can see that this female child prodigy is going to turn heads and create some stir within the industry.

The Basement has come a long way since it was created in 2015 with just a few members to over 65,000. The group began on Facebook as a place to share and discuss streetwear brands such as Supreme, Palace, Gosha and tons of other brands that people have an interest in. It was created as some sort of safe space to make sure that buyers were buying legit items off resellers and to ensure sellers were getting the correct price for their items. As the group has grown larger, it has become more of a community. Although the group is aimed at streetwear, the posts come under a variety of topics. With people from all over the world requesting to join, people are now able to network and find answers to many questions and needs they may have. This could be anything from photography to helping a family member raise money for charity.

The Baesment is very similar to The Basement but it is solely for girls. The main reason behind the group being created was because girls who were just getting into the clothing felt very on edge and as if they were being judged if they commented on a post in The Basement. Although I am confident posting within both groups, I do feel that The Baesment has many advantages. Due to the number of members being a lot smaller (just over 2000), it allows girls to communicate with each other more and it makes it a lot easier to find something you are looking for. For example, I posted in the group looking for girls to participate with my college work, as the target audience for the group is women in the UK, it made my search a lot quicker and more efficient. I also feel that this The Baesment is playing a huge part in the growth of women into streetwear as it is allowing people to network their own brands which may be specifically for girls or even just from word of mouth.

Name: Olivia Murphy Age: 20 Olivia has said she has never really classed herself as into streetwear until she began modeling. Olivia is a girl that likes to plan her outfits for the occasion. Liv went with a bright pink velour dress which sparkles within the lights of the Sex shop on the left. On the top right, Olivia has gone with a cheetah print top on a zebra sofa. I feel this works really well as some may think this would clash but they really compliment each other.

Name: Chloe Dreher Age: 20 Chloe’s style changes depending on her moods and the occasion. One day she could be going on a night out to a bar in which she goes for the more classic indie style. With flared trousers and denim jacket, she adds a bit of glam to her choice with a classic Alexander Mcqueen scarf for her special occiasion. To the right, we can see Chloe’s other style. Clacssic Streetwear. The bold Supreme print written across the hoodie with the stripes at the bottom works well with the white checks on her trousers and the white of her Old Skool Vans.

Name: Scarlett Carney Age: 17 Scarlett has always had a love for Streetwear and became interested in it when she first discovered Supreme. As she has grown older, she has become more interested in smaller brands such as Gosha and Places + Faces. The less branded outfit Scarlett was wearing combined a classic turtle neck t-shirt with a bold printed shirt over the top. This was then complimented with the blue of the denim jeans and the bold silver look of the classic Nike Air Max 97.

Manchester without any doubt is one of THE best cities in the world. With acts as big as Oasis, The Smiths and Joy Division all originating from here and having two of the worlds BIGGEST football teams, we must be doing something right. I am beyond grateful for being born into such an amazing city with incredible culture. From walking down the curry mile to be greeted with the warm smell of freshly made curries and shisa to the newly opened bars in the Northern Quarter. Sure, we have great food and drink places and some awesome museums but to me the best part is the shopping! Stores such as Carhartt, Oi Polloi and the world known Afflecks Palace all have a huge impact within the Manchester fashion scene. We also have TWO large department stores; Selfridges and Harvey Nichols which add to all the high end brands. The Manchester Northern Quarter is somewhat the equivilant to Londons Soho. Chiq independent bars and tons of independent clothing shops with styles varying from workwear to styles right back to the 20’s. Undoubtedly, NQ is used for various photoshoots due to the graffiti and bright lights so no wonder NQ is a key part for Manchester Fashion.
