The unobtrusive vernacular architecture merges and submerges back into the ground where the terroir brings the unique nuances from the soil of the place to the wine. Visitors move through the winery in the same circulation as the grape; they become a part of the process as they follow the flow of the grape on its path of transformation. The winery uses a gravity flow system to have as little negative impact on the wine as possible, allowing the terrior to shine through in each bottle of wine.

This design won an honorable mention in the Austin, TX competition. Traffic cones form the faรงades of the gallery space. These cones are precycled, and donated to the city after use. The structure is also precycled by using a Kee Klamp system that is readily available and can be easily assembled and disassembled. The Kee Klamp system can be reused in a variety of ways upon completion of the instillation. The flooring is made of durable recycled rubber. Connections are provided by custom plates formed from a single sheet of metal. The top plate is cut from the middle of the base plate reflecting the negative space between the cones. Each cone rotation is at a 30 degree angle creating only a single bent modification.

Kennedy, the oldest building on campus, is soon facing rennovation. This studio project was a collaborative effort to create an innovative and interactive space within the shell of this historic building. We were seeking to create a nexus of social interaction connecting students, faculty, and the city of Charlotte as a whole. We envisioned a flexible space that would be able to accomodate multiple scales of use, and encourage collaboration across different disciplines and colleges. We focused on using multiple modes of technology to blend with the architecture and create a dynamic space. The project will also bring life back into the quad as the front facade will become an interactive digital canvas. A low-powered digital radio station would also be broadcast from the space, connecting to the city and the multitude of commuters. The final review of the studio was an exhibition in the building featuring several installations.

UNCC is largely a commuter campus, often considered a weakness of the University, we, however, viewed this as a strenghth in the ability of the school to have an influence on the city as well as be enriched by the cultural diversity of the city at large. As a commentary on this idea an installation of a Charlotte map was painted on the floor of one side of the building. We interviewded students about their commute to campus, which we then looped on screens placed within the headrests of carseats located on the map.

Fort Tilden was a military base that has recently been given back to the public in NewYork City. This project was seeking to turn the space into a sports complex and park for the public.

Each groin features a tower, which will serve as a watch tower during nesting to prevent disturbance of the eggs. Pathways extend from these groins to become elevated walkways overlooking rehabilitation ponds for injured or displaced sea turtles and leading visitors to the various facilites.

Encorporating an ecological agent was a goal of this studio project. Our agent, the sea turtle, is an endangered species, mainly due to the worldwide problem of beach errosion. We used a series of groins to mitigate the beach errosion at fort tilden, as well as to act as an organizing structure for the entire site.

FLASH URBANISM
sketches + photos
Each festival begins with a journey. It is a venture outside the normal parameters of everyday life, which liberates participants from his their everyday self, allowing for a personal and social transformation. The temporary environment creates a heightened sense of awareness that the moment is fleeting. There is an emphasis on living in the present and being fully engaged with the environment and community. The ephemeral architecture of these instances of flash Urbanism may exist only for a short period of time, yet they impact the lives of thousands of people, who often report being transformed by their experience. These places live on forever in the memories of those who experienced them.

Festivals date back to the rituals of our earliest ancestors, Hunter and gather tribes held festivals after a successful hunt as a celebration of life and an honoring of the dead. These were great celebratory events with music, dancing and often elaborate costumes, creating traditions that continue today. Festivals are ubiquitous in contemporary society, creating instances of flash urbanism across the globe. Festivals vary in scale, scope, and type, yet each is about an experience that is fostered by the environment, both natural and built. Gathers create entire cities in a mater of days or weeks that quickly fade away, often without a trace.

Rome is perhaps one of the most amazing places to study architecture. I was fortunate to study and live in the beautiful city for a summer session. We had a studio space in the heart of the city and lived in the Trastevere neighborhood. The studio explored digital methods in photography and collage, paired with daily sketches and a collaborative group drawing exploring the Piazza de la Rotunda. Another course delved into the multi-layered history of Rome with a particular interest in the development of the aquaducts and how they facilitated the growth of the city including the plethora of fountains and public baths.
