Rooted Healthcare is a multidisciplinary medical group that provides holistic team based care to its patients. My design promotes emotional wellness for both staff and patients. In depth research on ambulatory care, biophilia, collaboration, and mental wellness suggested positive distractions, collaboration areas, and high quality materiality would enhance the perceived quality of care provided. The overall layout and centralized atrium waiting area were derived from elements of biophilia and aids in the natural healing process. The exam room layout is designed in a way to allow direct access to the sink upon entering the room. Also, within the room each user is given their own zone in which they do not need to intrude on other zones to complete tasks. In overview, this healthcare facility provides a place for holistic communitycentered healthcare by focusing on biophilia, collaboration, and mental wellbeing.

The hobbyist retreat is located in between two existing buildings in a city infill situation. My hobbyist is a Non-Buddhist Zen meditator coming to my week long retreat to refocus their mind and escape everyday distractions and stress. Through research, I learned that ‘New Age’ Zen Meditators meditate through many different activities, including yoga, journaling, and creative expression. My retreat embodies a sense of serenity and peacefulness, encompasses a space suitable for a week long retreat, and allows spaces suitable for various meditation types. I achieved this through the use of different materials, an upper level living space, and raised meditation room along with a multi-functional area in the back of the retreat facing the garden. Since the retreat is located in the city, but my hobbyist needs serenity, no apertures show the street or surrounding buildings. The only views are out into the enclosed garden area and the large skylight flooding the relatively small space with natural light.

TheCo is a co-working office environment for entrepreneurs, coders, and prototypers / makers with a large attached “blank space” where numerous events are held. The new office space is located on the fifth and sixth floors of a building in the Old Market area of downtown Omaha, Nebraska. I focused my design on further developing theCo’s brand by showcasing the process of making with a bold and structured design. I achieved this by incorporating a structured post and beam enclosure throughout the maker’s space, a continuous “shell” enclosure throughout the personal work areas and conference spaces, and showcasing a finished product within the event space. Neutral colors with bold accents were used to achieve my intent of further developing theCo’s brand. I believe my design establishes an intriguing and collaborative workspace theCo desires for its members, while incorporating a very practical and functional floor plan.

The International Quilt Study Center & Museum asked us to redesign their entry, reception, and gift shop area to make it function better for their needs and have more a aesthetic appeal for visitors. My design intention was to showcase the characteristics of quilts through materiality, focal points, and eye movement to increase the merchandise appeal. I achieved this through a neutral gray color pallet complimented with a muted green accent color to help guide a visitors path throughout the space. I also incorporated various types of transparencies to establish hierarchy and focal points. With detailed intent behind each type of fixture, I believe this design would successfully function for the International Quilt Study Center & Museum’s needs and increase the overall experience and appeal for each visitor.

This short term AirBnB residence is located in the center of downtown Lincoln, NE in the previous Typewriter Company building. It is the only living condition in downtown Lincoln situated on the street level. My design intention was to encourage curiosity and exploration for a couple during their visit to Lincoln, NE. I utilized the unconventional spaces, such as the existing maze-like hallway, trap door leading to a wine cellar, low height mezzanine, and back library, as focal points through volume and elevation. Light and materiality were used as secondary elements further emphasizing the desired user experience by providing points of circulation, suspension, and threshold. Compression areas are the focal points and main programmatic uses with smaller volumes, raised elevations, and a warmer color palette, whereas release areas provide contrast with large expansive volumes, main level elevations, and a light, bright color palette.
