Hello and Welcome to the 9th edition of PaK MaG our Easter Eggstravaganza This month we get you ready for Easter with some great cooking tips from Teah, we give you all the good things about chocolate PLUS we have a fantastic colouring in competition this month where you can win Easter baskets from Mount Sheridan Plaza. Easter was always a fun time in the James house-my mum always made sure we left a carrot out for the Easter Bunny and sure enough an Easter egg hunt in the back yard always came to fruition. Strangely enough I loved the Easter egg hunt, but always had the majority of my eggs left the following Easter (oh how things have changed!) The most prominent Easter memory I have is when one of my primary school teachers gave us eggs to make into little Easter Egg babies-we received adoption certificates and where encouraged to make sure the Easter egg baby lasted at least the whole day- mine lasted five years before my mum was allowed to throw out little rose. Yes I had attachment issues to chocolate; thankfully as an adult I have overcome them. Enjoy the time with your family, stay safe and don’t forget to tell everyone-you read it in PaK MaG

During Easter, the Savannahlander travels during the four day holiday period, departing Cairns on Good Friday, and returning on the evening of Easter Monday. While the rest of Cairns is only just stirring into life, the train quietly slips out through the Northern Suburbs of Cairns, Freshwater and Redlynch, where it then begins its ascent of the famous Kuranda Range. Stops are made at Stoney Creek to view the falls, Barron Falls and Kuranda. From here we follow the Barron River around to Mareeba . After a short stop, we proceed to the small town of Mutchilba for a morning tea stop, then a quick visit to Dimbulah . From here cultivated fields and agriculture give way to the rugged bush, and we begin more ascents up the Featherbed and the Lappa ranges. At 1.00 pm we arrive at the first day's destination, Almaden where lunch is available and most passengers will transfer over to Chillagoe by coach for an afternoon of touring the caves and their overnight accommodation. Daddy Diary Entry # Nine Summer
I recently woke up to what I thought, in my dream like state of consciousness, was two cats making love but as my brain came into focus I realised it was Summer trying to sing. Well off key and not within coo-ee of a note, but still the sweetest song I've ever heard. Her little vocal chords Desperately reaching for a melody. Just like her old man, couldn't carry a tune if it had handles.
Albeit with a very limited vocabulary she's finding her voice, is our Summer. I love simply listening to her garble to herself. I'm sure it all makes perfect sense in her world, to me it's like listening to Keith Richards talk after a big night on the sauce with the Stones. Fascinating, without being able to clearly identify one word. She has three words in her vocab bag at the moment. 'Mummy' sounds cute when she says it. 'Baby' even cuter. And 'DADA' it's deep and low and sort of scary, she sounds like the drag queen Cara VanPark. When Summer drops her first F-word I'm going to do what most Dad's who swear like a trooper do. Blame Daycare. I look forward to her learning our language and listening to her excitedly recount the days stories with speed and purpose because I know as she gets older and becomes a teenager the vocab shrinks back to 'yep', 'nup', 'nothin', 'sort of', 'dunno' and 'I hate you'. Love, Dave xo

Restaurant Review By Natasha Reidel
This month we thought we would head into mums kitchen for dinner- I know mums cook most of the time- however this month we thought we would share a recipe from one of our readers. We all know eating out is GREAT but our mums are usually the best cooks and a home cooked meal is always the best! This is a great chicken dish perfect for Good Friday or any night really! Enjoy.
Simple Moroccan Chicken (low-fat) Ingredients (serves 4) * 500g chicken fillet, cut into 2cm dice * 3 tbs (1/4 cup) flour, seasoned with salt and pepper * 1/4 cup (60ml) olive oil * 2 onions, sliced * 2 tsp ground cinnamon * 1/4 tsp ground cloves * 2 tsp sumac* * 3 tbs (1/4 cup) sultanas * 1 cup (250ml) chicken stock * 50g toasted pine nuts* * 3 tbs (1/4 cup) chopped fresh coriander * Juice of 1 lemon, plus wedges to serve * Couscous, Greek yoghurt and Lebanese bread, to serve Method 1. 2.
Toss chicken in the flour. Heat 2 tablespoons oil in a large frypan over high heat until hot, then cook chicken in batches until golden and set aside. Heat remaining oil in pan. Add onions, reduce heat to medium and cook for 10 minutes, stirring, until golden and softened. Return chicken to pan with spices, sultanas and stock. Reduce heat to low and cook for 5 minutes until heated through and thickened slightly. Stir in pine nuts, coriander and lemon juice. Serve with couscous, yoghurt, bread and lemon.
Notes & tips * * Sumac is a purple, lemony spice used in North African and Middle Eastern cooking. From spice stores and selected delis. * * Ready-toasted pine nuts are available from supermarkets

TIME FOR A LAUGH “The Goony Bird”…
“Little Johnny & the Alligator”…
After many years of marriage, a husband has turned into a couch potato, became completely inattentive to his wife One day Grandma sent her grandson Johnny down to the water hole to get some water to cook dinner. As he was and sat guzzling beer and watching TV all day. The wife dipping the bucket in, he saw two big eyes looking back at was dismayed because no matter what she did to attract the husband's attention, he'd just shrug her off with some him. He dropped the bucket and hightailed it for Grandma's kitchen. "Well now, where's my bucket and where's my bored comment. This went on for many months and the water?" Grandma asked him. "I can't get any water from wife was going crazy with boredom. that water hole, Grandma" exclaimed Johnny. "There's a Then one day at a pet store, the wife saw this big, ugly, BIG ol' alligator down there!" "Now don't you mind that ol' snorting bird with a hairy chest, powerful hairy forearms, alligator, Johnny. He's been there for a few years now, and he's never hurt no one. Why, he's probably as scared of beady eyes and dribble running down the side of its mouth. The shopkeeper, observing her fascination with you as you are of him!" "Well, Grandma," replied Johnny, "if he's as scared as I am, then that water ain't fit to drink!” the bird, told her it was a special imported "Goony bird" and it had a very peculiar trait. To demonstrate, he exclaimed, "Goony bird! The table!" Immediately, the “Bad Driver”… Goony bird flew off its perch and with single-minded fury attacked the table and smashed it into a hundred little One day a policeman stopped a motorist who had just gone through a four way Stop Sign and was about to pieces with its powerful forearms and claws! give him a ticket when the motorist said, "Officer you To demonstrate some more, the shopkeeper said, "Goony can't give me a ticket for that!' "Why not?" said the bird! The shelf!" Again the Goony bird turned to the shelf and demolished it in seconds. "Wow!" said the wife, "If this officer. "Because although I did not stop I slowed right down and it's almost the same." "But you did not doesn't attract my husband's attention, nothing will!" So stop!" replied the officer, "And the sign says STOP." she bought the bird and took it home. When she entered "But the way was clear and it was safe," replied the the house, the husband was, as usual, sprawled on the motorist. The officer then pulls out his batton and sofa guzzling beer and watching the game. "Honey!" she starts hitting the motorist. "What are you doing??" exclaimed, "I've got a surprise for you! A Goony bird!" The husband, in his usual bored tone replied, "Goony Bird, my yells the motorist in surprise. "Do you want me to slow down or stop?" says the officer. foot!”

Feng Shui for Children‌
when World peace starts at home! By Roseline Deleu and Susan O'Sullivan
There are days where we would try anything to have peace at home. Have you ever thought of applying some Feng Shui tips around your children's bedroom? It might be a good idea to have a closer look at simple and easy to apply suggestions to make your family life more peaceful and harmonious. Your surrounding vibrations are influenced in many different ways. Thoughts, colours, sounds, textures, environment, sites, building materials and much more, all impact onto 'harmony and well-being'. Your overall experience of a space, whether in- or outdoors, is a combination of the interpretation of all that your senses pick up light, heat, sound, temperature, smell, texture, shape etc‌ This combination of various forms of energy is called Chi (Chinese term symbolising energy) and every environment has its own special Chi.
An environment with good Chi feels, to most people, comfortable, supportive, pleasing and harmonious the kind of space that immediately makes you feel welcome and which you don't want to leave. Your objective is to make your homes like this. Of course there is no absolute quantification of Chi. The idea however is to create a home that satisfies most people, most of the time. Different parts of a home have different functions, so what represents harmony and good Chi for a bedroom, may differ from the harmony and good Chi appropriate for a living room or kitchen. When children are happy, the whole family is in harmony. You might consider implementing some of the following Feng Shui tips and advice for your children and teenagers bedrooms. Children bedroom Children's rooms should be simple and cosy, full of symbols representing possibility, imagination and space for allowing the development of a strong sense of self as well as enjoying the carefree joys of youth.
Display a picture of the parents or a family picture in your child's bedroom to create a sense of comfort and closeness.

Children grow and change fast. They might even seem to grow and change from month to month. They need their surroundings to reflect who they are at that time. Plan to re-arrange furniture and redecorate their walls at least every two years. As a general 'rule' of thumb, younger children will prefer their bed along the wall (security); teenagers will move their bed away from the wall keeping the bed head only on the wall (showing then their desire for independence). People have different values; various age groups have diverse tastes it is often a matter of simply accepting and respecting where our children are at the stage of their life! To help accepting the differences, only display recent pictures of your children rather than the baby shots that illustrate your unconscious wish to keep them at that stage. Roseline Deleu is an international Feng Shui Master & Author of three books; Susan O'Sullivan is a gifted psychic medium and Feng Shui consultant based in Cairns. Visit www.fengshuisteps.com where you can purchase Roseline's books and her latest Cartoon Guide 'Easy Steps to Feng Shui' and www.metaphysicallyspeaking.com for more details, bookings, free newsletters and more information on Feng Shui.
Tips ! Hang on the walls pictures that the children have chosen, avoiding aggressive photos that will only make them nervous and hyper active ! Provide organised storage ! In case of loft or bunk beds, top position is overpowering.Choose the shyest child to sleep on the top. Hang a picture of the parents in this room, above the height of the top bed ! If possible keep school or work items out of the bedroom. Place them in a separate study ! Never place the bed head onto the wall backing the meter box, hot water system, fridge, TV, computer or any other item emanating Electro Magnetic Fields (EMF) ! Separate children of different ages to let them develop more self-reliance. Allow them privacy to develop their independence and self-esteem ! Position inside the wardrobe door a full-length mirror. This will help a child to develop a sense of self ! Avoid overhanging (protruding) decoration and bookshelves above their beds.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT PAIN RELIEF FOR YOUR CHILD Children can experience pain from a variety of causes including earache, teething, symptoms of colds and flu, injury and headache. However, sometimes it can be difficult for a child to tell us whether they are in pain or how severe the pain is. Pain management can be easy if one follows the basics to find out the cause of the child's pain and treat it accordingly. For example, a child with a cold may have sinus congestion that can cause facial tenderness and headache, so by using decongestant medicines, we can partially relieve this pain. Unfortunately, there are some things that can't be prevented. Children who get immunizations will nearly always end up with a fever, so using simple paracetamol or ibuprofen may be necessary. Should a child exhibit pain, it should be promptly treated. Pain in no way should be viewed as character-building as it can psychologically and emotionally affect a child. When children aren't able to express that they are in pain, see if you can recognize some symptoms. These can include:
! ! ! !
Lethargy Wincing when an injured area is touched Changes to mood Irritability
Some of the over-the-counter pain relief available include: paracetamol, ibuprofen and codeine.
!
Paracetamol is always a suitable choice for pain relief in children older than one month of age. It is a liquid that can
159-161 Pease Street, Piccone's Shopping Village, Manoora Ph: 40532883 Fax: 40320446 www.discountdrugstores.com.au 2 12
relieve pain and fever associated with teething, earache, headache, immunizations and cold and flu.
!
Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory medicine that provides pain and fever relief. It works differently to paracetamol but provides the same relief as paracetamol and has the added benefit of relieving inflammation. It is only suitable in children older than three months of age and caution should be taken in children with asthma or any aspirintype allergies.
Both paracetamol and ibuprofen are useful in cases of mild to moderate pain. In situations where relief isn't provided with a single product alone and pain is severe, both paracetamol and ibuprofen can be used interchangeably. In cases of moderate to severe pain in children above 2 years of age where paracetamol or ibuprofen is simply not enough, codeine may be added to help alleviate pains, such as fractures or breakages. However codeine-combination mixtures should be reserved due to sedating properties and the possibility of causing constipation. Aspirin is an analgesic that shouldn't be used in children under 12 years due to the risk of Reye's Syndrome. For more information or help in choosing the right pain relief for your child, don't forget to come in and see the friendly staff at Pease St Discount Drug Stores or Terry White Chemist at Redlynch!

Here at cairns wildlife safari reserve we have two female lemurs named Lee and Mur, they are very cute and I like sitting with them to watch them take food out of my hands. Lemurs were in the movie “Madagascar but ours are so much cuter. Did you know ? ! ! ! ! ! !
They are only found on the island of Madagascar. In captivity they live to 26yrs old. Our lemurs love lychees. The ring tailed lemur is durinal which means they are more active during the day. The girls are the boss of the group. Grown lemurs can weigh 5.5kg.

STARTING BABY ON SOLIDS Following on from last months topic of feeding a newborn, this month we will be sharing some info on introducing solids to your baby, this is also known as commencing to wean.
digestive system to be overloaded from too many foods being introduced at once. It also means if your baby does has an allergic reaction, finding the food they are allergic to will be very simple.
Health experts recommend that it is best to wait until your child is 6mths old until you begin to introduce solid foods. By 6 months of age your babies stores of iron and zinc are beginning to deplete and their energy needs are increasing, so more nutrition other then breast milk or formula is needed.
A great idea is to puree some fruit or cooked vegetables and then freeze them into ice cube trays, this provides a suitable portion of food for your baby, but also makes preparing food easier as you will only have to thaw a portion at a time, and it prevents a great deal of wastage of food. A bar mix or hand held mixer is the easiest way to puree up food with minimal fuss, and it is easy to clean and store.
The reason it is suggested that you wait until your child is 6mths old is that it is thought that introducing solids to your baby any younger can cause your baby to be prone to more food allergies and their gut is not yet mature enough at an earlier age to handle solids, this is especially true for premature babies. If you feel that your child is ready to go onto solids earlier, it is best to consult your GP or child health nurse first, as they can know your child's individual needs and can advise you as to what is best for your child's personal situation.
Some foods to avoid are: egg white, honey or cow's milk as the main milk source before the age of 1, undercooked or raw fruit or veggies before the child can chew, as they may choke, and whole nuts before the age of 5. Most importantly, just relax and enjoy this next milestone in your babies life, and try not to worry too much about the smeared food which has been splashed all over your walls, after all, it adds character to your house!
Signs of readiness for solids are the baby showing interest in watching other family members eat at meal times, baby making chewing motion, the baby commencing to make a swallowing motion rather then just a sucking motion, as this will make choking less of a hazard. Another sign is the baby wanting more feeds then normal, and the feeling of not being able to fill your baby up. It is important to remember that your baby only has a very small tummy compared to an adult, so only the tiniest amount of food is needed to begin with. Most people start baby on some rice cereal, which is mixed with cooled boiled water or with a bit of breast milk or formula to make a paste, baby may only want a teaspoon to start with or just a few spoons full. Just try one food at a time; this makes it less likely for your little bubs

Choc full of CHOCOLATE!!! By Natasha Reidel
What's the very, very, very best thing about Easter? Chocolate, of course! What a great excuse to gobble up chocs of every flavour, shape and kind. Milk Chocolate, dark chocolate, white chocolate…..ahhhhhhh, I'm drooling like Homer Simpson! The history of chocolate: The 40-60 foot tall chocolate tree Theobroma cacao has grown wild in tropical Central America since prehistoric times. The latin name Theobroma actually means “food of the gods”. Nobody knows when humans joined the gods and started to consume chocolate, but archeologists believe that the “Olmec” were the first ones to pick and use the beans. The Olmec is the oldest known civilization of the Americas (1500-400 BC). During the late 19th and early 20th century, Spain (who had been considered the number one chocolate country), falls far behind. Switzerland becomes the leading manufacturer of chocolate products and is widely renowned for its outstanding quality and innovative methods. When it comes to chocolate eating, Germany surprisingly takes the lead with the highest consumption, followed by the USA, France and the UK . Chocolate lovers worldwide together consume more than a million tons of processed chocolate each year. This chocolate boom shows no signs of cooling off and is fuelled by new scientific research showing chocolate to have a beneficial impact on our health and overall wellbeing. A gift from the gods indeed!
Chocolate is also a good source of copper and magnesium, which helps to regulate heartbeat and blood pressure. Of course eating large amounts of chocolate is still bad for you and could cause weight gain. But, taken in smaller quantities, it could prove to be beneficial to your health. It all depends on the quantity and the type of chocolate that you're eating. Fabulous Facts about Chocolate: 1. “Chocopologie by Knipschildt”, founded in 1999 by Fritz Knipschildt, sells the world's most expensive chocolate. A hand made chocolate with 70 percent Valrhona cocoa powder rolled over French Black truffle sells for a whopping $250 each. 2. At 27-feet tall, the incredible “Chocolate Fountain” created by Jean-Philippe Maury is the world's largest and is located inside the Bellagio Casino Hotel, Las Vegas. Not just eye candy, this fully-functional chocolate fountain circulates a whopping 954.5 kilos of melted chocolate, at the rate of 136.38 litres per minute.
The benefits of chocolate: Recent studies have shown that eating chocolate may actually be good for you. Researchers have found that raw and/or minimally processed cocoa contains flavonoids similar to those found in green tea. According to preliminary studies, these antioxidants have been linked to help accomplish the following: ! ! ! ! !

Decrease blood pressure Improve circulation Lower death rate from heart disease Defend against destructive molecules called free radicals, which trigger cancer, heart disease and stroke Improve Digestion and stimulate kidneys
So….. let's hit the kitchen and make our own melted chocolate sensation…..Chocolate Fondue! It's amazing how many families have a Fondue Pot hidden away at the back of the cupboard. My Mum taught me how to make this simple Chocolate Fondue when I was 6 years old and my sister and I absolutely loved melting and mixing the ingredients and then dipping chilled wedges of fruit into the pot. Yummy!
www.pakmag.com.au
You'll need: ! Apples, pears, bananas, strawberries and orange wedges for dipping ! 16 ounces dark, sweet chocolate ! 1 1/2 cups light/low fat cream ! 1 tsp. Vanilla extract Instructions: 1. Break chocolate squares into smaller pieces and drop them into the fondue pot. 2. Add cream (which will prevent the chocolate from going lumpy) and stir gently but constantly until the chocolate is melted and smooth. 3. Add vanilla extract, and stir it in. 4. Use a fondue fork to spear the fruit & dip it in the chocolate. Enjoy!
Chocolate Alternatives I know we've been singing the praises of chocolate, but with childhood obesity at such high levels, there are a lot of parents out there who watch their children's diets carefully, and are probably looking for ways to limit their intake of chocolate and chocolate eggs during the Easter break. Here's a couple of nifty suggestions to try: 1.
Buy the kids an alternative to a chocolate egg. e.g. a toy or game, possibly with an egg, rabbit, easter theme. (We're sure they'd love any toy or game you buy them though!)
2.
Don't be afraid to share your "chocolate concerns" with close relatives who may be about to buy an Easter Egg for the children. Give them some alternative suggestions (as above). Or ask them to join in with the fun activities (below) - this will probably give them as much fun as the children!
3.
Alternatively, let the grandparents buy the children an Easter Egg, but you stick to a nonchocolate gift.
4.
Hard boil some eggs, and get the children to decorate them (with paints, crayons etc) to resemble another member of the family, then present them with the completed egg! If the finished result is too awful, at least you can enjoy eating it! (See page ? for instructions)
5.
To make the eggs that the children do receive a real treat - try one of these ideas:
(A) What about an Easter Egg hunt - around the garden, or around the house. Get friends or relatives to join in. Get the small Easter Eggs in foil, and maybe choose a different colour for each person. Let them loose it'll get them active, and make the chocolate more of a treat, rather than just being given it. (See our tips on Pg?) (B) What about a family Spring Cleaning event? Sounds dull? Well, not if everyone (yes everyone) takes part. Write all the "chores" on pieces of paper (from emptying the bins to cleaning the lounge window) - put them in a container, then each person takes a slip and rushes off to complete the task. Put a time limit on the whole exercise. When a chore is complete, they can take a mini-egg from the jar. Have some fun "chores" too, e.g. "choose the music to put on the CD while we work"!

Kids in the Kitchen with Teah
HOME STUFFED EASTER EGGS Ingredients: 1 large hollow easter egg 1 small hollow easter egg 1 bag of coloured marshmellows 1 bag of coloured jelly babies 1 1/2 block of milk chocolate 1 block of white chocolate (note: instead of marshmellows and jelly babies you can use any of your favourite chocolates or lollies) Instructions: Firstly get an adult to help you cut your easter eggs in half. Make a little nest for them out of tin foil to keep them balanced. Next melt the chocolate in a pot inside another bot of boiling water. Cut up all the lollies into small sized pieces and put in a bowl. Once the chocolate is nicely melted pour it in with the chopped lollies and mix around. While it is still nice and mushy fill up the easter egg halves so they are nice and full. Once that is done put them in the fridge while you melt the white chocolate. Put the melted chocolate in an icing bag and decorate the tops of the easter eggs. Put them back in the fridge and then when its easter time wrap them up in some nice cellophane and a bow and you have a lovely home made easter egg to give. You can personalise them to each persons favourite flavours. ENJOY!

April Fool ! ! ! By Natasha Reidel
April the 1st is just around the corner, so it's time to start thinking up those cheeky April Fools tricks and pranks. It's also time to start thinking about which friends and family members are the most gullible and most likely to make a good April Fools Day target.
is called "Poisson d'Avril." French children fool their friends by taping a paper fish to their friends' backs. When the "young fool" discovers this trick, the Prankster yells "Poisson d'Avril!" (April Fish!)
…But before you start scheming and tricking do you even know where the tradition of April Fools Day comes from, or why it's celebrated with pranks and jokes? …..
One common trick on April Fool's Day, or All Fool's Day, is pointing up in the air and saying to a friend “Look, it's a dead bird!” School children might tell a classmate that school has been cancelled or set the classroom clock forward to try and trick the teacher into finishing class early. Whatever the trick, if the innocent victim falls for the joke the prankster yells, "April Fool !"
Well….way, way back in sixteenth-century in France, the start of the new year was observed on April 1st. It was celebrated in much the same way as it is today, with parties and dancing into the late hours of the night. Then in 1562, Pope Gregory introduced a new calendar for the Christian world, and the New Year changed to January 1st. There were some people, however, who hadn't heard or didn't believe the change in the date, so they continued to celebrate New Year's Day on April 1st. Others played tricks on them and called them "April fools." They sent them on a "fool's errand" or tried to make them believe that something false was true. In France today, April 1st
Some practical jokes are kept up the whole day before the victim realises what day it is. Most April Fool jokes are in good fun and not meant to harm anyone. The cleverest April Fool joke is the one where everyone laughs, especially the person upon whom the joke is played. "The first of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year. "- American humorist Mark Twain
Top 3 World Famous APRIL FOOL jokes… 1: THE SWISS SPAGHETTI HARVEST 2: INSTANT COLOR TV In 1957 the respected british BBC news show Panorama announced that, thanks to a very mild winter and the virtual elimination of the dreaded spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop. It accompanied this announcement with footage of Swiss peasants pulling strands of spaghetti down from trees. Huge numbers of viewers were taken in, and many called up wanting to know how they could grow their own spaghetti trees. To this question, the BBC diplomatically replied that they should "place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best."
In 1962 there was only one TV channel in Sweden, and it broadcast in black and white. The station's technical expert, Kjell Stensson, appeared on the news to announce that thanks to a newly developed technology, all viewers could now quickly and easily convert their existing sets to display color reception. All they had to do was pull a nylon stocking over their TV screen, and they would begin to see their favorite shows in color. Stensson then proceeded to demonstrate the process. Reportedly, hundreds of thousands of people, out of the population of seven million, were taken in. Funnily enough, actual color TV transmission commenced in Sweden on April 1, 1970.

3: THE LEFT-HANDED WHOPPER In 1998 Burger King published a full page advertisement in USA Today announcing the introduction of a new item to their menu: a "Left-Handed Whopper" specially designed for the 32 million left-handed Americans. According to the advertisement, the new whopper included the same ingredients as the original Whopper (lettuce, tomato, hamburger patty, etc.), but all the condiments were rotated 180 degrees for the benefit of their left-handed customers. The following day Burger King issued a follow-up release revealing that although the Left-Handed Whopper was a hoax, thousands of customers had gone into restaurants to request the new sandwich. Simultaneously, according to the press release, "many others requested their own 'right handed' version.”

Essential Tips for
International Travel with Kids By Barbara Randle
Taking your family on an overseas holiday can be both one of the most exciting things you will ever do as well as one of the most involved holidays you will ever have to organise. Firstly you are going to need to get passports. All the relevant forms are at the local post office and once completed with necessary photos and birth certificates etc you book yourselves a passport interview and then in roughly about 2 weeks you have your passport back in the mail. They cost a little under $200 for an adult passport and less for children. Also visit SmartTraveller.gov.au on the internet and find out what the requirements are for the country you are going to visit. Do you need visas etc. The next step would have to be picking a destination. There are so many great places to go with plenty of direct flights out of Cairns to heaps of countries. This is probably when you decide what would be the best place to take a family. I guess for your first overseas flight you might not want to take too long a flight as jetlag would have to be taken into consideration. We have decided to go to Japan. Jetstar has some wonderful deals on for direct flights to Osaka and Nagoya in Japan and when the specials are on they are hard to pass up. We bought two adult and one child return flights for $1,800 which I think is a complete bargain. The flight is also only 6-7 hours long and once there only 1 hour time difference to ours.
The next step is accommodation and transport once you reach your destination. The one thing I have noticed whilst looking for accommodation is that family rooms can be a little hard to find so shop around and they are there. We are mixing up our accommodation by staying at a Mercure, a Sofitel, a Ski lodge, staying in a family run inn and in a Japanese house. This should give us a broad feel for Japan and its people. Our daughter will also be able to meet kids and play with them on our visit. Transport in Japan is probably the best you will find. I purchased a 21 day rail passes for our trip which you exchange at the railway station in Japan and then are able to travel on all JR Trains, subways, buses, ferries as much as you like during that time. Considering the speed of the trains in Japan they are a great way to see heaps of the countryside as economically and quickly as possible.
You definitely need travel insurance and should shop around for it as they all seem to offer something a little bit different so get one that suits your needs specifically. You can also get discounts if you use your current insurance company or your private health care provider. Speaking of health, it is best that you visit your local GP prior to departure and get a few antibiotics for your trip. There may be difficulty getting a doctor to see you in a foreign country as well as language difficulties so best get someone you trust to prescribe something. We have a general script for antibiotics for adults and another one for children (which you get unmixed) and if required your can add water to make it up. We are also throwing in some cold and flu tablets as well as other general bits and pieces that we may need like headache tables (kids and adults). There are also some rules on what medications you can take into the country so check that out as well. Since we are away for a while we are getting our house babysat. It is always good to have your house lived in and things done whilst you are away. If you don't have a friend who can “move in whilst you area away you can always go through a reputable house sitting group. If you can't arrange this and you have animals that need looking after then have them kennelled somewhere good like Sanlay Kennels at Gordonvale. Make sure that at least one family member and friend have your full itinerary along with contact details for all the places you are staying. If you are taking your mobile phone make sure it works in the country you are going to and get international roaming put on it so it works in another country. If you are going away for a decent length of time you might also want to pay some of your regular bills in advance and advise others of your absence. Make sure you do some shopping around for currency exchange as well. It is surprising how much difference you can find between the banks and currency exchange shops around Cairns. Last but not least make sure you have good comfortable clothing for travel and take games, colour in etc for the long flight. Keeping kids occupied for 6 plus hours in one spot can be a challenge. Make sure everyone drinks heaps of water and moves around every now and then.
The really good thing about international travel with kids is that they can learn so much about how differently people only a short distance from Australia live. The different cultures, language and foods are such an educational boost for your children and how they view the world. International travel has never been so inexpensive or so easy and taking your family is such an adventure. We will keep you up to date next issue of PaK MaG on our travels and adventures from Japan.

Real Easter Eggs that Last Forever ! By Nicole George
We make these eggs every year. I still have eggs that the kids made when they were just two years old and they look as though they were made yesterday. Materials Needed: ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
A Raw Egg per person Pin, Needle, Nail or Tack Craft Paints Paint Brushes Sponges, Stamps, Toothbrushes and Strings Newspaper (to cover work surface) Candle sticks or Soda bottles Clear Polyurethane Spray -OR- Clear Nail Polish Small Bowl
Instructions: !
Cover the work area with newspaper to protect surfaces. Press the nail, pin or tack into both ends of the egg (round end and pointy end). Make a small hole at each end. Use the pin to enlarge the hole, by chipping away at the shell.
!
Stick the pin into the hole and stir up the egg. Holding the egg over the bowl, blow as hard as you can into one of the holes. The egg will come out of the other hole. If you did not stir up the egg, the yolk will not be broken and it will be very hard to blow out.
!
Save the egg, for scrambled eggs tomorrow morning. Thoroughly wash the inside and outside of the egg with warm soapy water.
!
Allow to drain and dry completely. Let the kids paint the eggs with the craft paints. Use sponges, toothbrushes, stamps or anything you like to help decorate the egg.
!
Place the egg onto a candle stick or soda bottle to dry. When egg is totally dry, spray with clear polyurethane, or paint with clear nail polish.
!
Apply a second coat of clear finish.
!
Allow to dry as noted above.
!
Place these beautiful eggs in a basket and display them on the kitchen counter!
Note- If you have trouble blowing out the egg, make the holes bigger and stir the egg again, or shake it

NTURES OF BOPSTAR, BREE AN E THE TOTLLY AMAZING, IN V D A D THE BOPPERS!! CREDIBLE, FANTASTIC The sing! They Dance! They Entertain us everywhere around Cairns; And in their spare time, they use their Special Super Powers and have Amazing, Incredible Adventures! BOPSTARS FOVEVER! UNITE! Bulletin: Part III Last edition: The Boppers were chasing the Chihuahua-sized fluffy, creature which seemed to be heading towards the shell stage at Fogarty Park. But now it seemed the creature was not alone, as the whole park was ablaze with lights and smoke. Flashing lights filled the grounds and could be seen from some distance with residents of Cairns becoming quite nervous and worried as to what was going on. As Bree and the Boppers neared the area, Eleese piped up, “I’m going to use my magical infra-vision to see what is through the fog. Hopefully it will help us find out what we are up against.” “Great idea!” agreed the Boppers. Bree, Rhea and Trent all waited eagerly until Eleese had returned from her extra special hiding spot with an update. She had been gone several minutes and being almost dinner time, Trent decided to have a quick snack. Out of his Bopstars lunch box, he pulled his usual drumstick and muesli bar treat and began happily chowing down on both items simultaneously.
44
“Bree, Bree, Bree!” shouted Eleese, as she returned to the crew. “The smoke is too thick and my special infra-vision is being interrupted by the flashing lights. We need Trents Whirly Wind Powers to blow away the fog!” With that Trent stood to attention and gave an almighty burst of wind……nothing happened. Annoyed that nothing had happened, Trent let out an even stronger gust of air…….still nothing. “What is going on? My Powers aren’t working!” said Trent. Both Eleese and Bree encouraged, “Keep on trying Trent, your our only hope!” So determined not to give up, he let out an ex t r a s t r e n g t h W h i r l y W i n d W i p e o u t burst………which finally cleared the entire park of all smoke and fog leaving an unbelievable site that none of the Boppers could explain. All that remained in the middle of the park was a single, shiny, egg shaped spacecraft, glowing bright green. Next to this Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) was the small ball of fluff which had started this whole dilemma. “What is happening here?” gasped Trent, as he hid behind Bree. Replying to Trent, Bree stated “I’m going find out!” Bree, with Eleese and Trent close behind, approached the Chihuahua-typed creature with caution. With each step, Trent became more uneasy with Eleese reassuring him that everything was going to be ok. The creature was only metres away when it suddenly began to make a noise………..”Stop!” it said. “I don’t mean you any harm.” The Boppers all halted as if been instantaneously frozen by Eleese’s Freeze Pose Powers. “I mean you no harm. I need your help!” To be continued……

Best Bunny M vies By Nicole George
With the weather we’ve had in the last month nothing could be better than hiring some movies and stuffing your face full of chocolate Easter eggs- ears first of course. So after lots of research PaK MaG brings you the best movies to watch over the Easter long weekend.
Easter Parade (DVD) (1948) Don Hewes (Fred Astaire) is devastated when his longtime dancing partner, Nadine Hale (Ann Miller), breaks up the team to set out on her own. Determined to prove that he can succeed without her, Astaire vows that he can pick any random chorus girl and make her a star. He picks Hannah Brown (Judy Garland), and the two make the perfect pair. NR
It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown (DVD) (1974) No holiday is complete without the Peanuts. Charles Schultz' Peanuts gang go on a fun-filled Easter egg hunt, and this year they even get a glimpse of the Easter Bunny who looks suspiciously like a certain beagle.
Winnie the Pooh - Springtime with Roo (DVD) (2004) In this springtime adventure, Roo gets excited about all the season has to offer -- warm weather, flowers, and Easter fun! However, Rabbit only cares about spring cleaning! Luckily, Roo teaches Rabbit that friendship is more important than being in control of things. The entire gang has a magical time as they learn all about the importance of friends.
Here Comes Peter Cottontail: The Movie (DVD) (2006) HERE COMES PETER COTTONTAIL: THE MOVIE fashions a full-length sequel to the classic 1971 television special by legendary animators Jules Rankin and Arthur Bass. Updating the original's stop-motion puppetry with eye-popping CGI animation, the musical adventure takes place in the magical land of April Valley, where adorable bunny rabbit Peter Cottontail is preparing for Easter while his nemesis, the Evil Iron tail, and the queen of winter, Jackie Frost, conspire to foil the holiday.
The Great Easter Egg Hunt (DVD) Whiskers, a confused stuffed bunny rabbit in this animated adventure, must lead Peter's other toys in a quest for a cure for their owner's illness, so the little boy will be up and around by Easter. As the relentlessly upbeat rabbit canvasses the town for help after recruiting Peter's Spanish-accented parrot, Carmen, he eventually encounters the actual Easter Bunny.
Easter in Bunnyland (DVD) Flip Rabbit, Buck, and Bitsy Bunny can't wait for Easter. When they discover that the Easter Bunny has been kidnapped, they must pull together to save their friend from the evil Beau Rat and his partner.
Dora the Explorer - Egg Hunt (DVD) (2004) This Dora DVD volume includes two special holiday-themed episodes: in "Egg Hunt," Dora and Boots look for prize-filled eggs while dodging Swiper the fox; and in "El Dia de la Madres," Dora prepares for a Mother's Day party.
The Littlest Angel's Easter (DVD) (1998) The Littlest Angel and a boy named Ryan are both having a tough time. As they celebrate Easter together, they learn that hope and faith in others goes a long way. While not specifically religious, the DVD does convey a moral story for children.
Yogi the Easter Bear (DVD) (1993) It's Easter, and Yogi Bear is up to his old tricks stealing picnic baskets with his friend Boo Boo. When they find out that the Easter Bunny has been kidnapped, they must do everything they can to save him.
An Easter Bunny Adventure (DVD) (2000) Celebrate Easter with this fun-filled, colorful animated video! Join the Easter Bunny on his exciting adventures.

They are powerful diggers. They have exceptional sense of smell & hearing, many times greater than dogs but their vision is limited. They can reach up to 50km per hour in small bursts. An adult male can weigh between 135kgs to 390kgs, an adult female can weigh 95ks to 205kgs. Syrian Brown Bears usually hibernate in winter but because of the tropical climate our bears do not hibernate. The mother brown bear gives birth while in hibernation, when born the cubs are the same size as a guinea pig. They are classified as vulnerable..

Bridging the gap with your children when the family breaks up by Suzie Hall - Relationships Australia Queensland Ongoing contact with mum and dad is so important for children especially when parents have separated. We know this needs to feel safe and comfortable for parents and children. It is really important that the kids can go from dad's house to mum's house, and vice versa, without any stress. But lets face it, keeping anger and resentment at bay for the children's sake can seem like an impossible task, especially in the beginning. Sadly arguments between mum and dad can traumatise the children caught in the middle. This can then cause many problems for kids, including emotional issues and difficulties at school. Sometimes there needs to be a neutral space for children so that they can continue seeing parents, especially while things are getting sorted out. Fortunately there is a service available to help families during this painful time. The Children's Contact Service at Relationships Australia offers a changeover service on Fridays and Saturdays (and Sundays by negotiation). The changeover and changeback may happen on the same day, a week apart or over any time period that has been agreed upon by both parties and the service.
The child/ren spend one week with Party B Week Two, The Changeback Parent B drops the children off at the service on Saturday 4:00pm The child/ren play at the service for 30 minutes Parent A picks the child/ren up at 4:30pm the same day By minimising the need for parents (or other significant family members) to deal directly with each other, children can be protected from conflict. The Children's Contact Service also provides supervised visits. This gives parents the time and space to visit with their children where they may not otherwise be able to. For example, in cases where there has been allegations and/or convictions of domestic violence, sexual abuse, alcohol or drug dependence, or where a parent needs help in re-establishing a relationship with the children.
Following is an example of how a changeover and changeback may work. Week One, The Changeover Person A drops the child/ren off at the service on Saturday 9:00am The child/ren play at the service for 30 minutes Person B picks the child/ren up at 9:30am the same day

Pet Tips & Hints By Nicole George
DON’T SHARE YOUR CHOCOLATE! We at PaK MaG are all about sharing and caring- except when it comes to sharing chocolate with your furry friend!
How is chocolate toxicity treated? If you suspect that your pet has eaten chocolate (more than the stray chocolate chip that fell on the floor), call your veterinarian for advice. The toxicity of Theobromine is dose dependent. This means that the size of your pet, the type of chocolate, and quantity of chocolate determine if or how toxic it is for your pet.
The importance of chocolate... Valentine's Day and Easter are big "chocolate holidays". I require chocolate year round, and always have some stashed somewhere! Care must be taken when animals are around, though. Chocolate can be toxic, and sometimes even fatal, for animals. Dogs are most commonly affected, due to their ability to find it and the common 'sweet tooth' they seem to have. It is important to remember that cats and other pets are susceptible to the toxic effects of chocolate, too.
There is no specific antidote for Theobromine toxicity. Medical treatments supportive, and may include all or some of the following:
What makes chocolate toxic, anyway? Theobromine, a component of chocolate, is the toxic compound in chocolate. (Caffeine is also present in chocolate, but in much smaller amounts than Theobromine.) Theobromine's effect on the body: ! Central Nervous System (CNS) stimulant ! Cardiovascular stimulant ! Increase blood pressure (mild) ! Nausea and vomiting What are the signs of animal toxicity? Signs are most commonly seen within 12 hours (or less) of chocolate ingestion. ! ! ! ! ! ! !
50
Excitement / nervousness / trembling Vomiting / diarrhea Excessive thirst / sometimes excessive urination (at higher levels of Theobromine toxicity) Muscle spasms Seizures Coma (rare) Death (rare) -- likely due to heart rhythm abnormalities.
!
IV fluids - to prevent dehydration from vomiting, diarrhea, and /or increased urination, and to "flush" the Theobromine out of the system.
!
Emetics - medications that induce vomiting. Used when the ingestion of chocolate is within 4 hours. Up to 6-8 hours post chocolate ingestion may be effective.
!
Activated charcoal - for ingestion greater than 4 hours prior to treatment, or for patients that show continued signs of toxicity.
!
Anti-seizure medications - for patients having seizures and/or muscle tremors.
!
Cardiac medications - for patients exhibiting irregular heart rates or rhythms.
Why isn't chocolate toxic to humans? Humans can break down and excrete Theobromine much more efficiently than dogs. The half life of Theobromine in the dog is long; approximately 17.5 hours.
Keep your pet's best interests at heart...chocolate wasn't meant to be shared anyway!! See your Vet or local pet shop for pet chocolate alternatives they will love.

Easter Egg Hunts Fun For The Whole Family ! By Nicole George
If you want to have a ball this year then consider throwing an Easter egg hunt. There is no better way to get the whole family together and enjoying the holidays like they should. This type of fun will ensure that all of the kids will have more fun than they have ever had before.
kids. (see page 27 for tips on how to do these!)This makes for a wonderful holiday craft that everyone can enjoy. These eggs can them be placed all around the yard or park, depending on where you choose to have the Easter egg hunt.
If you want to plan the best possible Easter egg hunt you should consider getting everyone that you know involved. Talk to your family members, especially the ones who have kids, along with all of your friends. Try to arrange it so that you can all get your kids to participate in the Easter egg hunt. This will make it a thousand times more fun. For generations children have been playing and having fun in Easter egg hunts and there is no reason why your family cannot do the same thing. This is one of the finest of all family Easter traditions. Your Easter egg hunt can have real eggs or chocolate eggs; it does not matter.
Many people choose to spend the night before Easter dying and decorating all kind of Easter eggs with the
2 52
What we do in my family is hide real eggs outside for the kids to hunt for and at the end of the Easter egg hunt these eggs get traded for chocolate ones- perfect for the hot humid days up here in the North! Also this way no chocolate gets dirty or wasted and if some eggs get left behind it is not a big deal-not like leaving chocolate would be! The best part though is coloring the eggs together the night before. This is a fantastic family time together that you just would not have if you used chocolate eggs for the Easter egg hunt. After the Easter egg hunt you can arrange for a wonderful brunch for all of the participants - kids and adults alike. Everyone can then discuss what a great time they had during the hunt and how to make it even better the next year. Easter egg hunts are something that everyone can enjoy and no one will ever regret having. It is a fun and easy idea that will be remembered for years. Just remember to take your camera!

DIY By Natasha Reidel
PaK Projects
Easter Gift Basket Here are the basic steps for making an Easter basket: 1. Purchase an empty brightly coloured basket (usually found at Crazy Clarks/Overflow/The Warehouse) and add coordinating shredded-paper 'grass' to the bottom. 2. Fill with your children's favorite Easter treats and little toys. Small books, crayons, stickers and bubbles also make great 'basket fillers', as do home-made (or shop bought) biscuits or marshmallows. 3. Top it off with a stuffed bunny, duckling, or baby chick. Hand puppets are nice alternatives to stuffed animals. 4. Wrapping the completed basket in cellophane is very decorative and will keep it free from dust and inquisitive little fingers. 5. Decorate your completed basket with curly ribbon cascading down the front and add a home made gift tag.
Easter Baskets are wonderful gifts to give to family or friends rather than giving individual Easter eggs.

Movie Review - Movie Review - Movie Review HORTON HEARS A WHO tells the story of two worlds -- one large and one very, very, very small. It all begins with a little speck of dust. When a cataclysmic event causes this tiny speck of dust to become displaced, it is sent floating through the air. Horton the elephant is enjoying life in the Jungle of Nool when he notices the speck and hears what sounds like a tiny voice coming from it. Could the voice possibly be calling for help? Horton tries to show his neighbours... but no one else can hear it, and they don't believe him. He tries to explain, “If you were way out in space, and you looked down at where we live, WE would look like a speck.” Horton is convinced that there's an infinitesimal world living on that piece of dust, and it needs his help. If left floating through the jungle, it would surely be destroyed. Horton vows to find a place where the speck will be safe. He will have to fight against his entire community who believes he's gone mad and are determined to stop him. We quickly learn that Horton was absolutely right. Living on the speck is an imaginative population of “Whos” who are about to learn that their entire world is vulnerable to destruction, and Horton is their only hope. When disaster is about to strike they must listen to Horton and band together to save their world and Horton's credibility in the jungle. Release Date: 20 March 2008 Cast: Jim Carrey. Focus on a Fundraiser Every month Pak Mag would like to help our Not For Profit Organisations by promoting to our readers what they do, who they help and how you can help them. Often these organisations have very limited government funding and rely heavily on volunteers and donations to keep their service going.
This month Nicole George tells us about the Worlds Greatest Shave
WORLDS GREATEST SHAVE BE BRAVE AND SHAVE World's Greatest Shave 13-15 March 2008 If you've always been meaning to join in the fun, but just never took the big step, why not register to be part of the special 10 year celebration of WGS and help those living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders. World's Greatest Shave is being held from 13-15 March 2008 with the Leukaemia Foundation aiming to raise $3 million in Queensland to assist the Foundation to continue to offer practical care and support for patients and their families, as well as invest funds into vital medical research. Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Peter Johnstone, said since WGS began in 1999, the event has raised over $14 million in total, and has grown into one of the most successful and well recognised fundraising events. “Queenslanders have embraced WGS in the most amazing way, and every year more and more people put up their hands to shave or colour their hair because not only is it a great cause, but it's also loads of fun,” Mr Johnstone said. “I want every person who has ever coloured or shaved their hair to know what a valuable contribution they have made to the lives of patients and their families. The Foundation would never have been able to achieve the level of patient care and
support, and fund the fantastic research projects had it not been for their bravery.” “Even in the 10 years since WGS began, we have seen incredible improvements in treatments and patient survival rates due to cutting edge medical research, some of which the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland has been privileged to fund.” “The Foundation has a mission to care and a vision to cure, and we won't stop until there is a cure available for every single patient,” Mr Johnstone said. The Leukaemia Foundation receives no ongoing government funding and relies on the generosity of the Queensland community and the private sector to deliver their Vision to Cure and Mission to Care. Will you be brave and shave? For further information or to register please go to www.worldsgreatestshave.com or call 1800 500 088. So where did the Easter Bunny come from and what does he really have to do with Easter? By Nicole George
Over time, the Easter Hare delivered coloured eggs to good children. So What is Easter? Easter is the oldest and most important Christian festival, marking the end of the fasting season of Lent and the death, on Good (derived from God's) Friday and resurrection of Jesus Christ, on Easter Sunday. It has deeper and more complex associations than Christmas, particularly in the Orthodox Christian world. There are many customs and traditions associated with Easter which, like most other holiday and feast days, are derived from a combination of both Jewish lore and pre-Christian and pagan practices. It is named after Eostre, meaning 'spring' was the goddess of fertility and she was represented symbolically by the form of the hare or rabbit being an extremely fertile animal the goddess of fertility and birth. Worshipped by firstcentury pagans at the vernal equinox, who believed she would bless both their families and their crops. Christian missionaries saw this celebration took place around the time of the resurrection of Christ, so they adopted Easter as a Christian holiday to increase conversion. Why does the date move around so much? Discussion of the dating of Easter could fill an entire edition of PaK MaG and has been the subject of intense debate among the Christian churches since the second century AD. However, for many years it has been agreed that Easter falls on the first Sunday after the Full Moon that occurs on or after the Vernal (spring) Equinox (21 March). If the Full Moon falls on a Sunday then Easter is the next Sunday. This means that Easter can fall as early as 22 March or as late as 25 April. This year it falls on the 23rd of March, the second earliest date possible. Easter last fell on the latest possible date, 25 April in 1943, and will next fall on that date in 2038. However, it will fall on 24 April, just 58
one day before this latest possible date, in 2011. It is the origin of the phrase "moveable feast". So what is the Paschal Lamb? Lamb has become associated with Easter for two reasons: one is that Christ became known as the Lamb of God in Christian theology, atoning for the sins of man by his sacrifice on the cross. But the idea of the "sacrificial lamb" is older. Pesach means "skipping" or "passing over" and, according to Jewish lore, the Israelites marked their doors with the blood of a lamb to prevent the Angel of Death killing their first born; their doors were therefore literally "passed over". Jewish temples began to sacrifice lambs ritually to mark the Passover. But the fact that newborn lambs mature into something that can be eaten around Easter must also be taken into account. Why have rabbits and eggs become linked with Easter? Eggs, of course, are ancient symbols of fertility, for very obvious reasons, while the Seder meal incorporates a hard boiled egg as a symbol of new life. The ancient Persians also painted eggs for Nowrooz, their New Year celebration falling on the spring equinox. An egg has also been seen to be associated with the rebirth or resurrection of Christ. The custom of eating them also derives from the fact that they were forbidden during Lent. There are a great many rituals associated with eggs, mainly dating from mediaeval times in Europe, usually involving decorating, throwing, rolling or hiding eggs for children to find them.
www.pakmag.com.au
The Easter bunny or rabbit comes from the hare, another ancient, pre-Christian symbol of fertility associated with spring. But it gets even more complicated than that. AngloSaxon mythology says Eostara changed her pet bird into a rabbit to entertain a group of children, and the rabbit laid brightly coloured eggs for them.
And other Easter customs? Where do you start? Many stem from ancient folklore and are specific to certain areas, usually reflecting the desire among people to get out and about on the first holiday of spring and the end of a fasting period. That's why we get Easter Parades, Easter Bonnets, egg-rolling festivals, etc.
The chocolate bunny, like the chocolate Easter egg, is a much more recent idea, stemming from 18th and 19thcentury middle European confectionery traditions, many of which were adopted in Britain.
What other foods are associated with Easter? A great many. The Finns and Swedish eat mammi or memma, a baked malt porridge, while in Naples they eat pastiera, a cake made from ricotta cheese and in the province of Salamanca, a meat pie called hornazo, made from pork loin, chorizo sausage and hard boiled eggs. The Greeks eat a soup made from lambs' innards, magritsa, on Easter Sunday. Ham tends to be more popular in the United States, where the custom was brought by Scandinavians and Eastern Europeans. There are many Easter baking traditions which range from simnel cake, a light fruit cake made in Britain, to kulich, a traditional bread in Russia and the Ukraine while Poland's mazurki are sweet cakes made with honey and filled with nuts and fruit. Hot cross buns, made around Europe, are the most well known - spiced buns, made with currants and leavened with yeast, carrying the symbol of the cross and containing no ingredients that contravened the Lenten tradition. The idea of eating fish on Good Friday (and all Fridays) comes from the early Christians who decreed that Friday would be a fast day on which no meat was eaten because that was the day Christ was crucified.
But surely the oddest custom used to take place in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia, where there was a tradition of spanking or whipping of woman on Easter Monday. In the morning, males throw water at females and spank them with a special handmade whip, consisting of eight, 12 or even 24 withies (willow rods), which is usually from half a metre to two metres long and decorated with coloured ribbons at the end. The spanking is symbolic and normally not painful or intended to cause suffering. A legend says females should be spanked in order to keep their health and beauty during the next year. So there you go some interesting facts I bet you didn’t know about Easter-and you thought it was all about chocolate!!!

Hope puts our feet on the path when our eyes cannot see it. Hope moves us to act when our souls are confused of the direction.
