manifesto This is my design manifesto, theses are certain guidlines I try to follow when designing something. Learn from you design, it may not work first time round but use the negatives to make the positives. You have to work hard to achieve well, but this needs to be balanced. You need to think outside the box, Don’t limit yourself and stay inside it because if you do you limit how far you’ll go. Set targets and stick to them, procrastination is only helpful when you get results. Most of all, fight to create something new.

We did a workshop in type design. We looked at various examples to get us thinking. We had to then choose three images to create some type based on the characteristics of that image. I tried to create a consistent house style that replicated the style of each image.

This is some drawings and rough sketches of my type.

cartography

Cartography is the making of maps, joining art with accuracy. The object of a map is to copy the characteristics of the earth and are ushually used for navigation. But can a map represent something else? Everywhere we go could be said to shape who we are. I personaly spend alot of time traveling from Newhey to huddersfiel to where I go to University in Huddersfield, does this make me who I am?

does where you go shape who you are? Are we the maps of our lives?

harry beck Harry Beck created possibly one of my favourite pieces of work, the London Underground map. It was created on the idea of replicating the electircal cuircuit drawings he used as an electrition to make the map simple and easy to use. How can something so complicated be so simplified and work so well? I decided to do a piece on the repetition of my journey from Huddersfield and Newhey.

3-D piece I created a docimentation of my journeys for one week to see where I went. I did this by sticking a map to some wood and using small panel pins and coloured cotton to plot where I went. I wanted to see if any patterns where made. I like this piece of work beacuse its different from all the other 2-D pieces I have done.

I them began to look at the patterens I created with the lines of my journey and decided to look at what it would look like without the mape behind it, just the bare lines.

I created this piece based on my trip to University that I do frequently. I showed the distance between home and University widening the more I get into my course the further away home becomes.

flip book

I ceated a flip book to shw the overlapping of my journeys and repetition

This is a flip book I created, I really like the outcome of this piece. The book is binded and made from sheets of acetate which where drawn on with a marker. The idea was to show the overlapping of journeys throughout a week of my life. I also added some type to help show the meaning flip book but no tso it was too obvious.

The image above is a computerised version of one of my pieces. I like this design as is simple yet effective.

These are some of the images that I created from my 3-D map with various effects on them. Obviously as always some worked better than others as every trial is hit and miss. The bottom image is one of my favourite edited ones and one of my final pieces. I like how the map have faided into the background and the routes take the center stage in a way. It shows what really matters. The graphics of the street is what makes us who we are. Everyone who looks at the street graphics sees them in a different way, its a personal interpretation. And this is how I see it, its where we go thats important.

idea 1 My fisrt idea was to create a box that contains everything we need in it that a person in povery has. As in todays world on of the big issues we have is poverty. This would show whoever found it what in a sense what makes our world. However is how would I put the elements in that arent physical? For example air? Things that people in poverty haveThis is one way of representing the unsanitary conditions, putting rubish in. This makes sense but how would whatever finds it know what it means?

Dirty water Unsanitary conditions Bad health care No education low standard of living

idea 2

Capitalism is a big part of our society. We live in a consumer society where the upper classes own the economy. They exploit the lower classes and reap in the profits. Is this us as a society?

This idea was to create a captialism tree to represent out society. Starting with all the upperclasses at the top and then the working and under class at the bottom. I do believe that this is a key point in our society. How is it fair that people work as hard as each other yet earn a percentage of what others earn?

final idea

One of the key thinks that makes us who we are is emotion and happiness. We do nearly everything in life to make us happy. We work to buy nice things, we go out for days out to make us happy, we tell jokes to make us laugh. I feel this sums us up as a species. I took a series of images and video clips that represent happiness and made them into a slid show with a backing track.

cabinet of curiosity I did some research into artist that have created cabinet of curiositys. One that stood out was Dianne Levesque. I like her work as it was a painting and oposed to the norm of a box with things in it, I also like the stlye of the painting.

i picked an idea close to my heart I decided to do my cabinate of curiosity on the war as it is a topic close to my heart. I went on a trip to Huddersfield market to collect some artifacts and began to think about my box.

collection of artifacts

This was my initail idea for my cabinate, a box with mulitipal drawers with maages in. On complition of my images I decided to keep the images in there own.
