Here we are again, another year over and a new one just begun! We have seen the New Year in and set plans in place for 2015. This issue looks at New Year, New Starts around career and family chores! NEWS Little Cake Corner for Lees A collection of cakes and cake decorating equipment is the latest addition to the High Street in Lees, Saddleworth. Brand new Little Cake Corner is the place to go for all you need to decorate any cake, as well as selling its own Wedding and celebration cakes, cupcakes and brownies. And owner Philippa Reddish has transformed the upper floor into a bright, sparkly party room where children can spend their birthday making their own special cupcakes. Philippa decided to make her hobby her new career following an increasing demand for her highly imaginative celebration cakes. All the cakes are baked fresh on the premises, and she is able to take orders for individually designed cakes decorated for any occasion. Philippa provides a full range of sugarcraft equipment including famous brands like Karen Davies, PME and Claire Bowman Cake Lace. For parties, children can dress up as mini cake decorators to create their own cupcakes. Children will create six fun cakes as well as enjoying cake themed party games, fantastic hot and cold food and a giant cupcake birthday cake for the birthday boy or girl. Dial-a-Health-Visitor after dark Kirklees health visitors have launched a telephone help line offering parents advice between 5pm and 8pm. Set up by Locala Community Partnerships, which provides the Kirklees NHS health visiting service, the line gives families the chance to speak to a qualified health visitor after hours. The new service, for parents of children under five, is available Monday to Friday. Health visitors are there to support and advise families on issues including crying, feeding, teething and can arrange for their own health visitor to contact them the next day.

Yorkshire Ice Cream Company triumphant at two awards ceremonies Artisan ice cream company Yummy Yorkshire finished 2014 by gaining recognition for its dairy ice cream and business at two awards ceremonies held on the same night. The Denby Dale based business was awarded ‘Best Frozen Product’ in The Food Awards England and Wales 2014, as well as being highly commended in the ‘Taste of Yorkshire’ category of the White Rose Awards held by Welcome to Yorkshire.

NEWS Free childcare to double

Is it cow’s milk allergy? Is your baby crying excessively in its first few months? Are you concerned that something might be wrong? New research shows that persistent and unexplained crying can be a sign of cow’s milk allergy, an intolerance that is notoriously difficult to diagnose. A new campaign called ‘Is it Cow’s Milk Allergy?’ provides expert advice to help parents spot and understand the symptoms of CMA, which occurs when the immune system identifies a protein within the cow’s milk as harmful, and triggers an allergic reaction. Cow’s milk allergy can affect up to 7.5% of children under the age of one, and is the most common type of food allergy in young infants, yet it can be very difficult to diagnose as symptoms are often mistaken for other common conditions such as colic and eczema. Symptoms will also vary from baby to baby, and can be immediate or delayed, so it is important to know the signs and symptoms to look out for. EDUCATION Hipperholme Grammar holding free choral workshop for primary schools Following the tremendous success of Hipperholme Grammar School’s first Choral Workshop for Primary Schools in February 2014, the event will be held again this coming February. In collaboration with the Director of Music at Bradford Cathedral, the Choral Workshop for Primary Schools will be held at Hipperholme Grammar School (HGS) on Saturday, 7 February starting at 2pm. The Workshop is aimed at children in Years 3 – 5 who demonstrate a love of singing, and school children throughout the area have been invited to attend.

Heathfield Parents’ Week Last term Heathfield’s classes included some slightly more mature students than usual as family members visited to experience lessons themselves, taking on specific tasks with the class and subject teachers. The response to this new initiative has been extremely positive, even if it has brought back some scary memories for a few parents (and grandparents). One highlight was the Year 4 Science experiment, shooting cola and chewy mints 5 metres into the air. The family members were heard to say:

The children will spend the afternoon at HGS with warm-ups, singing in rounds and in different languages, practising some choral pieces and learning techniques and what it is like to sing in a Cathedral Choir. The children will then have tea in the School Dining Room before travelling in coaches provided by HGS to Bradford Cathedral to perform for their parents, where they will be collected to return home.

BRINGING UP BABY

ON A BUDGET By Joanna Parry

Having a baby is a costly business, and it’s not unusual for parents to spend thousands of pounds on kit before their baby even arrives. But the truth is, babies need very little stuff and what they do need you can almost always borrow from friends or buy second-hand.

Some DOs (and a DON’T) for buying on a budget DO invest in some necessities before your baby arrives, but you DON’T need everything yet. Tell the world you’re pregnant you’ll be amazed at what hand-me-downs come your way. DO prepare a gift list, or (diplomatically) exchange unwanted gifts for something useful.

DO hit eBay with a vengeance. Baby clothes and equipment often come in bundles, which are far cheaper than bidding for individual items. DO buy new if there is a safety issue involved. You can buy almost everything second-hand and as most baby gear is used for such a short period of time, things will be in surprisingly good nick. Look out for NCT and baby table top sales, and if you live in a baby-centric area your local charity shop will be packed with prams, cots and highchairs. DO organise your own swapping event with your friends who have children. DO join recycling forum Freecycle or other swapping-buying-selling websites such as Nappy Valley or Gumtree. DO go budget if you must buy new. Budget brands have to pass the same safety tests as the expensive ones and are often made by the same companies. Look out for great value local retailers who know their clients and will offer the whole range. Many supermarkets sell stylish baby clothes at a great price, and Ikea has brilliant value nursery furniture. If you can’t live without the expensive brands pick one or two key items carefully – and check out the sale rail.

The gear you need SLEEPING Think about a cot-bed from the start or decorate a basic cot with baby friendly stencils to make it look like a designer one. While cots can be bought second-hand, current guidelines on preventing S.I.D.S. suggest that babies should sleep on new clean mattresses. Baby sleeping bags are great but pricey so buy them second-hand or from the supermarket. Many mums think baby monitors are unnecessary but if you do want one the £20 basic model is just as good as the all-singing, all-dancing variety.

OUT-AND-ABOUT Easily the most expensive piece of kit is a buggy, so look for decent models on a recycling site. Or go for a cheap one that folds up and is light-weight and some buggies will recline to allow a newborn to lie flat.

CARRYING Invest in a second-hand sling for as little as £10, or borrow one – an unbelievable number of mums buy slings brand new and never use them. Across the UK

DRIVING Car seats CAN be bought second-hand but make sure you are confident that the seat has not been in an accident. Go for a convertible model that lasts from birth to 4 years (check for instructions for safe use if you are borrowing/purchasing second hand).

FEEDING AND CHANGING Apart from a pram, cot and car seat, babies need very little – nappies, a few babygrows (in neutral colours), a blanket, cardigan and

hat. Don’t buy any other baby clothes – you’ll receive enough gifts when they’re born. Save money by breastfeeding – bottlefeeding costs over £500 a year and that’s just the formula! Bottles can be sterilised without a machine and they can be warmed in a jug of hot water or consider getting your baby used to room-temperature feeds. You don’t need a highchair yet, and hopefully someone will lend you one by the time you do. Whichever side you’re on in the debate about green washable nappies, there’s no doubt they work out cheaper – as long as you don’t wash them at 90 degrees or tumble-dry. It can cost up to £1000 to keep a baby in disposable nappies until they

are potty-trained, whereas using reusable nappies costs only a few hundred pounds for baby number one and even less when siblings come along. ‘Shop local’ Baby and Toddler • Gently sweep the inkless wipe provided over the hand, making sure you cover the fingers and thumb well, and roll the hand onto the paper from wrist to fingers, holding the fingers flat.

KES SILVER JEWELLERY – TOP TIPS FOR TAKING BABY PRINTS Getting a good hand print from a baby is not easy. Babies tend to curl their hand up and keep them moving at all times. So we asked Huddersfield silver print jewellery craftswoman Kirsty Flerin of KES Silver Jewellery for her top tips for taking baby prints for making into her lovely silver jewellery: • It’s easiest to get a print when your baby is asleep, and when you have someone else to help! • Get the reactive paper (supplied in KES kits) ready, on a flat surface that you can move under the hand (e.g. supported on a magazine or book).

• Press the fingers and thumb gently to make sure there is contact with the paper then lift off as cleanly as you can after a second or two.

• Foot prints are much easier and less wriggly. Again, sweep the wipe over the whole surface of the foot and press cleanly onto the paper for around a second or two. (Don’t worry about smudges as I tidy the images up using computer software.) • Cleaning the hand or foot with an ordinary wet wipe afterwards to make sure there is no staining to other surfaces. (I have heard one instance of the wipe reacting with paintwork, but they are non-toxic so are no risk to your baby.) CHORES FOR KIDS? Have a family plan for everyday household tasks and you will teach your kids a great life lesson, and there’s no better time to start a New Year Family Resolution. Here are some ideas from Families contributors. Chores help kids learn responsibility, and sharing chores gives you help around the house. Not sure your kids will go for it? Turn it into a game when they are young, a way to earn stars and later credits when they are older. (And since you ask, no, we don’t think children should get paid to help you around the house!)

TODDLER (AGES 2-3) • pick up/put away toys • unload the dishwasher, especially plastic cutlery, plastic cups and Tupperware • dust (little ones love a feather duster!) • collect dirty clothes and put them in the hamper • help move clothes from washer to dryer • put clothes away • make their bed • wipe down cupboards, cabinets and skirting boards with soapy water. This one can get messy but it’s lots of fun! At this age, it is more about ‘helping mum’ and having fun than chores!

PRESCHOOLER (AGES 4-5) All the above plus: • load the dishwasher • take out the recycling • lay the table • clear the table
