Diploma 2021 was developed from Firminy, an icon of the modern movement’s conceptual approach to architecture and the city. Firminy-Vert was designed in the mid-fifties in a still industrial city, during post-war reconstruction, followed by Le Corbusier’s work, now a Unesco world heritage site. This urban situation combines the ordinary, as well as exceptional pieces and generous landscape features, a medium-scale urban system with a strong relationship with its countryside and peri-urban hinterland. From this, we proposed an experiment, an architectural fiction, an updated counter-vision of the modernist “dream” nurtured by the feedback that the last five decades and the contemporary challenges suggest. The Unité d’Habitation at Firminy concludes a series of five prototypes built by Le Corbusier between 1948 and 1968: Marseille, Nantes, Berlin, Briey-en-Forêt and Firminy-Vert. What will the Unité of 2021 be like? Each student was asked to develop a project starting from the following themes: rooftop, connection, duplicate, ground floor, facilities, furnishings, surroundings.

Diploma Unité Vert 2021

The theme chosen from those proposed was “rooftop”, that is why the project was born from the idea of reusing the spaces of the kindergarten school that was on the roof of the unité, which are now abandoned. A botanical school is then placed on the roof, in order to reuse the existing spaces without making changes to the existing structure. In addition to the renewal of the roof, the project develops in a central vertical column, that extends over all floors of the building, replacing the smaller apartments with seven greenhouses with different climates, which take advantage of the existing double and triple heights, going to completely change the atmosphere of the existing section; in addition, the environment of the corridors is also modified, from dark and repetitive become bright and full of new life. Common areas are also developed for residents, which are now not very present in this building, creating areas dedicated to the inhabitants of the unité that overlook the new greenhouses, allowing them to enjoy the view from above. The project aims to give new life to the entire building by bringing green to all floors of the unité.

MSc 1 Atelier Tropeano Woba Basilea 1930-2020

Professor Ruggero Tropeano Assistants Debora Marci Elisabetta Mainardi

16

The atelier over the years has focused on the context of cooperative colonies and this time in particular on the colony Woba Basel, created as an exhibition example to experiment with innovative construction methods. The Basel City Construction Commission has asked for academic proposals to transform existing buildings to modernise them. For the project I choose the buildings IM SURINAM 91-99, by architects H. Von Der Mühll & P. Oberrauch, E.F. Burckhardt and Steger & Egender. As a topic I decided to focus on the modification of the existing apartments to make them more compliant with current demands, thus creating different types of housing that could accommodate various types of inhabitants. The strategy was to keep the envelope unchanged and to modify only the interior trying to keep as much as possible the existing walls creating a few new walls and rather eliminating the existing ones where it was necessary to expand the spaces. Finally, to improve the atmosphere of the apartments I decided to use colors depending on their psychological appearance. To choose which shades to use and how to combine them I used the color tables developed by Le Corbusier in 1931 and 1959.

BSc3 Atelier Collomb La misura del tempo “Pièces urbaines” a La Chaux-de-Fonds

Professor Marc Henri Collomb Assistants Gaëlle Verrier Antoine de Perrot

26

The project site is located towards the North end of the town of La Chaux-de-fonds. Analyzing the peripheral parts of the area, there are two different activities but for the same type of target: two associations that offer supervision professional and socio-educational support for people with disabilities. And finally, the presence of a football field, overlooking an elementary school. The project is an Health Residence for Disabled, offering them housing and family climate, care and rehabilitation, with projects for capacity development, autonomy, training, work placement and free time management. The aim of the project is to offer living spaces to people with motor disabilities, to support them during training that lead to a positive development of their dysfunctions, to accompany them towards their independence. Then there is also a desire to integrate them with people of good health, not to make them feel different or isolated, for this reason the basketball court is also accessible to external people, especially children of primary school.

BSc2 Atelier Collomb - Molteni Water - Hybrid

Professors Marc Henri Collomb Enrcio Molteni Assistants Carlotta Fantoni Stefano Larotonda Andreanne Pochon

34

The theme of the first semester was Water, part of a cycle on the four elements. We worked in Santiago de Compostela, the most rainy place in Europe. We had to study the water combined with the concepts of roof and bathroom. The place of the project is the Bonaval garden, a hill at the suburb of the historical centre of the city, characterized by the Domenican’s monastery and the museum of Alvaro Siza. The theme of the second semester was Hybrid. We worked in Antwerp and had to project a tower. The place of the project is overlooking a canal and we also had to project a masterplan for ten towers.

35

Water

The project consisted in a bath house for some pilgrims that after the Santiago’s walk need to rest and have a bath. My project was located in a free space near the museum of Alvaro Siza and so I used the same material for the facade. On the first floor there are the rooms where the pilgrims can sleep, the second floor is characterized by the shape of the roof that collects the rain and reuse it; on this floor I try to revive a Japanese onsen with a pool and some space where pilgrim can wash before and after entering in the water.

Hybrid

For this project we had to create an hybrid tower with different typologies of apartments for different kind of people. The hybrid had also to be seen in the facade and not only in the plan of the apartments. My project was characterized by four supporting towers which grow throughout the height of the building and are present in every plan, in one tower there are the stairs and the lifts, the other three are used in different ways as needed, which define the most private zone of the apartments and the other part of the apartment are all open and bright thanks to the big windows. I designed three diferent floors ,with different size and uses, that combined create the hybrid on the facade. The ground floor consist only in the four towers and is very permeable to create a transit space between public to private.
