ITC Benguiat was designed by Edward Benguiat (1927-present) in 1977. This typeface was published by Elsner + Flake as part of the ITC Benguiat Super Family. It consists of 12 font variations. Edward Benguiat helped to establish ITC (International Typeface Corporation) as the first independent company for type designers. Benguiat became partners with Herb Lubalin in development of U&Ic, ITC’s magazine. Shortly after, Edward quickly created new ITC typefaces such as Bauhaus, Tiffany, Benguiat, Benguiat Gothic, Korinna, Panache, Modern No. 216, Caslon No. 225, Barcelona, Avant Garde Condensed and many more.

PERSONAL CRITIQUE My personal opinion of ITC Benguiat is that I quite enjoy the unique letterforms. They have a leaning attribute that reminds me of German design. It differs from other typefaces in that it has a playful combination of edges and curves which contribute to its personality. This typeface can be recognized as the type used in the popular sci-fi TV show, “Stranger Things.”

PERSONAL CRITIQUE My personal opinion of Rian Hughes’ typeface, Urbane is that it is overall a great typeface. I appreciate the amount of fonts included in this family, and the range from thin to heavy is a nice gradient. Having this variety can allow designers a nice way to use multiple fonts, yet retaining a cohesive design. Urbane is similar to Avenir, being very clean and easy to read, with no flourishes or serifs. This typeface could be used for anything from comic strips to brand identity and much more thanks to the wide range of weights and styles.

ABOUT Ohno Blazeface was designed by James T. Edmondson of the OhNo Type Company. It was designed in 2015 out of Edmondson’s deep appreciation for lively typefaces and simultaneously dissatisfaction and amazement at the current type design landscape. James wanted to highlight under-appreciated gems, while also respecting history without reinventing it. Other typefaces created by OhNo Type Company include: Beastly, Chee, Coniferous, Conk, Digestive, Hobeaux, Rococeaux, Obviously, Ohno Fatface, Viktor Script, and many more. Ohno Blazeface is best suited for bold, headline text rather than body text, as the bulkiness can make it more difficult to read at a smaller scale.

PERSONAL PERSONAL CRITIQUE My personal critique of Ohno Blazeface is that I really quite enjoy the playfulness and character possessed by the letterforms. This font could be used for editorial headers, or large headlines with the intent to grab attention. This typeface is very unique because it is not your everyday fatface. It has very short descenders which make the letterformsfit tightly into a space, as well as minimized leading, as well as fancy ornaments.
