happy homeware Spring/Summer 2015
When I began thinking about my new collection in Spring 2014, I had been toying with the idea of a creating a capsule collection for a while, little bits of all of my favourite things tied together in a bundle, and which would enable me to introduce my products into the homes of a wider audience without compromising my playful style. So within these pages are new products featuring my best selling prints. From ceramics to wallpaper, all made in the UK, from top to bottom. I knew that this capsule collection would need a hook, you know, like that catchy part of your favourite song, or the eggs that hold the cake mix together, that kind of thing. Who knew that the secret ingredient could be something as simple as one single colour. When I was little I use to ask people regularly (and actually still do!) “What is your favourite colour?“ When people answered “Black.” I use to shout “Black isn’t a colour...Pick another one!” And so when I began sampling in my studio armed with a big tub of gooey black ink, quite honestly, I thought I had lost my marbles. My concern was that it was boring, predictable even, and that it would zap the soul out of my prints. After all, it is not the happy sunny yellow that we all know and love. But what awaited me when I lifted the screen off of the first print was a feeling of utter respect that I had for a colour that I use to ‘not count’ as a colour. What I saw before me was an element of stylish retro that other colours simply could not compete with. And I am sure that you will agree, it has added something quite special. Fear not, because you will of course, find the usual splash of yellows, blues and oranges shouting loudly and having a great time, whilst welcoming their new found friend. So... here’s to eating doughnuts off of plates with big smiley faces on, and walls that make you stop and stare. And the colour Black. Enjoy!
