[Rachel’s] natural aptitude and passions allow her to excel more rapidly than most young graduates entering the profession. She is keen to pay attention to the practical constructibility side of projects while maintaining a careful eye on the aesthetic result each detail brings... She primarily worked under my direction during her internship and is very much considered a self-starter and independent thinker. She sees project needs before others and quickly pays forward direct efforts to take care of them as they arise. She is well-liked by the staff and shares willingly her technology/software savvy knowledge.

AIA VIRGINIA PRIZE -
TRAILS
TO RAILS
Overall First Place Winner for AIA in the State of Virginia
Spring 2022 | Christiansburg, VA
This competition, run by the AIA of Virginia, was a three day design charrette between all of the accredited schools of architecture in Virginia. We were given a prompt on a Friday and needed to complete a presentation board of our design and drawings by Monday morning. Each school selected 10 finalists to be sent to the state level jury. After being selected as a finalist from my school, I was selected as the overall first place winner of the entire competition at the state level.
My design embraces Christiansburg’s future Signature Park while also respecting the classic aesthetic of landmark buildings in the Downtown Historic District. The station integrates nature into its design through sustainable features, such as mass timber structure, vegetation, green roofs, and a rain garden. The buildings feature the historic red brick of the community architecture while allowing ample daylight within the spaces and clear visibility of both Huckleberry Trailhead and incoming trains through large glass panels. The design is completely accessible, provides plenty of seating, and allows waiting passengers to relax surrounded by nature.

FIRE-RESCUE STATION 11
Design-Build Competition, VIA design, Norfolk, VA
Fall 2020 - Summer 2021 | Norfolk, VA
As a design-build project, VIA partnered with Conrad Brothers, a construction firm in Chesapeake. The VIA team consisted of just two people: a principle/partner and me! My responsibilities were significant and included designing, modeling, rendering and diagramming. We were given a set of parameters, including square footage, adjacencies, specifications and precedents. There was a large amount of square footage that needed to be placed on a relatively small site. This project gave me the opportunity to create a clear and functional design and produce a large portion of the deliverables for both the technical and financial proposal. I took part in design team meetings with Conrad Brothers, stakeholder meetings, and the final presentation.
Some of the main influences included the required placement of the apparatus bay for clearance on the turning radius of the fire trucks and its central location so multiple spaces could have visual access into the bay for safety and security reasons. Privacy for the firefighters was also a major factor because various activities needed to be hidden from the public-eye, such as lounge spaces and sleeping quarters but also needed access to natural daylight. We had to take into account quick reaction time to calls and the need to decontaminate returning firefighters before entering the building.

Apparatus Support Spaces
The Apparatus Bay is the cornerstone of a fire-rescue station. It houses the vehicles that enable fire-rescue personnel to respond to emergencies safely and quickly. Yet there are many other spaces that contribute to the safe and successful function of a firerescue station. Proper location and flow through these ‘hot-zone’ spaces minimizes contaminants entering the cleaner ‘coldzone’ spaces of the building.
A number of support spaces require immediate adjacency to the apparatus bay, including turnout gear decontamination and turnout gear storage, the radio/watch room, medical supply room, workshop, and apparatus bay toilet/shower room. Each of these spaces provides a separate and unique function, but all are critical to the efficient and effective flow of personnel within the station.

TWO RIVERS - PREFAB EMBASSY
2022 AIA Blue Ridge Student Award “Citation” - VT Studio
Spring 2022 | Lagos, Nigeria
This project studied the benefits and techniques of prefabricated design. Prefabricated design saves money by reducing construction time and eliminating unnecessary waste. Moreover, when designing embassy housing, not every country will have the same resources or trained workers necessary to construct a design, so prefabricated designs eliminate that need. This project includes three and four bedroom units, each composed of eight prefabricated, stacked boxes, along with various amenities within a concrete podium below. I had three main priorities in my design process. First, to create simple, double height apartments with prefabricated volumetric boxes. Second, to embrace the environment. The buildings’ orientations optimize wind movement to mitigate the high temperatures and uses greenery to provide shade while resembling popular Nigerian conservation centers. Third, to create a community inspired by the history and culture of Nigeria. Two major rivers were important trade routes in Nigeria and resulted in the formation of three major cultures. This was applied through a water feature tying the site together, while also cooling and capturing water on the flood prone site.

RESTON ROW RESIDENTIAL
Mixed-Use Apartment, HKS, Washington, D.C.
Summer 2022 | Reston, VA
This project is a mixed-use residential core and shell building located in Reston, VA and is part of a larger complex consisting of office buildings and a hotel all connected below by an underground parking garage. I joined the team at the documentation phase of the project and was able to contribute significantly to a documentation set deadline at the end of the summer. I produced section and plan details, documented floor plans with dimensions and annotations, developed edge of slab plans, participated in design meetings with consultants, attended site visits, and more.
This project consisted of two main challenges. The first was the difficulty of coordination between architecture firms when working on a core and shell project. The dynamic was unique due to the special chain of authority in this particular project as the firm responsible for the interior design was hired directly by the owner and not the core and shell architecture firm (HKS). This meant that the interior architecture firm reported directly to the owner, while the engineering consultants reported to us, which resulted in a large number of coordination and design meetings. The second challenge was that the facade was made of a pattern of precast concrete panels. These panels aimed to give the building a unique pattern while also meshing with the other buildings on the complex. As the structure of the building and the mechanical needs were determined, the facade had to shift to best hide those elements. Multiple design options were used in Revit to iterate the best solution. The outsourced rendering to the left shows the most recent panel design layout in context with the other buildings.

PRESERVING PRIDE
Studio at University of Maryland
Fall 2019 | College Park, MD
This project focuses on creating a connection from the entrance of campus to Memorial Chapel and celebrating the signature appearance of the traditional UMD campus while integrating sustainable features. University of Maryland has a strong architectural style of Georgian red bricks and white columns. I wanted to embrace the campus design while showing the potential to modernize these traditional buildings into sustainable examples. The building blends into the context through its symmetrical layout and materiality. The structure and materiality of the building takes advantage of the brick’s thermal capacity to heat and cool the building. The glazing optimizes daylight by providing a larger expanse of glass on the northern facade, which compliments the public program in that portion of the building. The site embraces the current topography by optimizing the sunken portion of the site to collect stormwater from the site and rainwater from the butterfly angled roof, which is then reused within the building itself. The site becomes a gateway into campus that visually and physically connects the edge to the iconic monument that the Memorial Chapel has become.

OLD BEACH VILLAGE
Apartment Complex, VIA design, Norfolk, VA
Fall 2020 - Summer 2021 | Virginia Beach, VA
This project is an apartment complex located in Virginia Beach and was in the documentation phase when I joined the team. I quickly had to learn the design of the project and materials used so that I could help produce the required detail drawings for an upcoming submission deadline. At the direction of my supervisor I developed details of various wall sections, joints, roofs, headers, sills, balconies and more. The initial drawings I created were based on sketches from my supervisor but as I became more familiar with the components I was able to create a large amount of details myself and then have them checked by my supervisor instead. I was able to learn quickly and help contribute to the team in a major way. These are just a few of the many details I contributed toward the project with Revit and I was also able to pick up redlines on the elevations, floor plans, and life safety plans as well.

PUBLIC SAFETY HEADQUARTERS
Joint Police and Fire Facility, HOK, Washington, D.C.
Summer 2019 | Outside Washington, D.C.
This project integrates police administration, fire administration and the community. The design allows for open staff work spaces while providing protection and organization for necessary procedures. At the time of my involvement, the project was mainly in documentation development with some key pieces still in the design phase. I designed iterations of the lobby and entrance facade, which falls under the design phase. At the same time, I created life safety plans, reflected ceiling plans, interior and exterior elevations, millwork and furniture details, stair details and more in Revit, which falls under the documentation phase. Also, this project provided a unique experience in the role of an architect as a mediator between the two competing clients within the project: the police and fire administrations. Many of the design meetings with the clients required the architecture team to facilitate discussions and compromises in the design.

REFORESTED ART CAMPUS
Sustainable Design - Virginia Tech Studio
Fall 2021 | Blacksburg, VA
This project is a sustainable art campus at Virginia Tech. Before the town of Blacksburg was developed, the campus area was forested. This proposal calls for a reforestation of the area which will relink biodiversity, absorb carbon, protect against erosion and more. Three existing buildings are reused and retrofitted with new program. All buildings are connected by a network of sidewalks and bridges. The new library and cafe building defines the southwest edge of campus. The building uses heavy timber structure with rainbow polycarbonate panels on the south facade to help diffuse the sun and glass on the north to allow the sun in with a green roof to retain heat while promoting creativity within the space. Greenhouses are integrated throughout with pink WSPV glass optimizing sun for plant growth. The project was modeled in Revit and rendered in Lumion.

GEORGETOWN HERITAGE CANAL
Urban National Park Intern Project - HOK, Washington, D.C
Summer 2019 | Washington, D.C.
As a group of five interns, we worked for Georgetown Heritage through HOK to enhance a canal section as an urban national park to offer memorable and enriching experiences. It will rehabilitate the canal edge, create a sense of place, provide recreation and reflection programs while establishing community connections. We were given a general concept to develop further and used design presentation technologies to render stills, panoramas and videos to help Georgetown Heritage gain funding. The design makes the Mile Marker “0” an important moment, while creating three main views and providing programs to entice the community. We used Revit and Rhino to model, Lumion to render, Photoshop and Illustrator to edit and QR codes to share. The project was presented to the entire HOK office at Washington, D.C. and the leaders at Georgetown Heritage.

Ian McKellen - Colored Pencil Drawing
I decided to draw him because I am a huge fan of The Lord of the Rings. McKellen is the actor who played Gandalf in the films.
Elephant - Sharpie Drawing
I love nature and animals, so they are often inspiration for my artwork. I love the ability cross hatching has to produce an incredibly realistic drawing despite the seemingly random and quick pen marks.
PERSONAL ARTWORK
Hand Drawings in a Variety of Mediums
Work Ranging from 2016 - 2022
I discovered my passion for drawing during my sophomore year of high school and have continued to draw in my free time with a range of mediums, including pencil, colored pencil, pen, sharpie, markers, pastels and watercolor markers. Art has always been a way to express my thoughts, feelings and passions, while providing a source of relaxation. I started my own Etsy Shop during the pandemic and have made over 90 sales. Running an Etsy Shop has been very educational regarding the demands for maintaining a business, such as marketing, expenses verses profit, stock, inventory, shipping, security and branding.

Hands, Princeton University Ornamentation, and Bicycle - Pencil Drawings
To be accepted into the University of Maryland’s Bachelor of Science in Architecture program, I needed to provide drawings of these subjects.
Flamingo - Colored Pencil and Pastel Drawing
This drawing was a challenge to show the layers and dimensionality of feathers in varieties of pink.
Rainstorm - Colored Pencil Drawing
My favorite weather is rain. The sounds and smells of a rainstorm combine into a beautiful dance.
Eye - Colored Pencil Drawing
This is my old roommate’s eye from University of Maryland. Convenience by proximity can also be a muse.
The Deathly Hallows - Sharpie and Watercolor Markers
Along with being a big fan of The Lord of the Rings, I am also a big fan of Harry Potter. This is my compilation of the Deathly Hallows, featuring imagery inspired by the animated storytelling of Hermione Granger in the films.
Hogwarts - Sharpie and Photoshopped Text
Hogwarts is the home of all the magical experiences from the book. The architecture of the castle in the movies also matched the magical story. The text behind describes Hogwarts for the first time in the books.
