Located in Downtown Champaign, the Institute for Advanced Glass Study provides programs with distinct public and private functions in a site with very particular circulation patterns. After analyzing these patterns and programs the design of the building is intersected by a circulation axis at its core. This allows for a separation of public and private spaces when necessary but also linked when needed. The building utilizes the structure and landscaping to emphasize this idea of a bridging space. The building itself is designed to be modern industrial through its use of open plan spaces and semi exposed building systems. The building systems are also a large part of the building, by utilizing a double skin faรงade, which also incorporates and supports the HVAC system.

house on a hill: I N C L I N E edward c. earl design award nominee

Positioned on a steep slope, the form of Incline house builds off the slope of the earth’s surface as opposed to going against it. This modern take on the saltbox house uses structure as beauty, integrated views from different levels, and a clear distinction between private and public spaces. It’s shape and use of vertical siding gives the essence of an old barn on the exterior while the interior embraces a modern design. Plans and Sections are ink on mylar.

Figure constructive was a bilingual collaborative worshop with five french students of the École Nationale Superieure d’Architecture de Versailles that called for projects addressing specific architectural concepts. For our given concept of suspension, we designed a suspended community garden in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. The program allows for members of the community to have their own small garden on one square module off one of the main walkways. The freed space below becomes a marketsplace for gardeners to exchange what they have grown or sell their products to the community.

bibliotheque de Q U A R T I E R in collaboration with christine robillard Located in the 13th Arrondissement of Paris, the Bibliotheque de Quartier functions as a small local library that engages with the community. Separation of public and private areas is crucial in order for the library to still alow secure events after library hours. The form of the building is based on two concepts. In plan the building is created through a series of overlapping grids and in form it consists of three shifted elements connected by a thick ribbon expressed on the facade.

pantin P E D E S T R I A N B R I D G E in collaboration with aaron chan, brittany johnson, and jacob mcfadden The city of Pantin at the northeastern border of Paris is looking to rapidly revitalize a previously industrial area along the Canal de l’Ourcq. The two sides of the canal are to be redeveloped with housing complexes as well as institutional and service buildings. This pedestrian bridge serves as a link between these new river front developments, ensuring that the two sides remain connected. After visiting the site there were very defined circulation patterns from the pedestrian traffic. The bridge’s design uses these existing paths of the sites circulation to create it’s shape.

ateliers de G A S T R O N O M I E Situated between a park and a residentail street in the 13th Arrondissement of Paris, Ateliers de Gastronomie is a cooking school equiped for both short term and long term classes. The program calls for a multiple fully equiped kitchens for both cooking and baking, an auditorium equipped with kitchen for teaching, residence halls, and a cafe and restaurant where students can sell and demonstrate the skills they learn from the visiting chefs. The building itself becomes begins to focus a persons view. Whether it be looking in on a kitchen as the students learn their skills, being drawn in by the views of the food in the cafe as pedestrians walk to the park, or students enjoying the exterior courtyards or roof top terrace.
