PERSONAL PROJECT

A commuter backpack for the SF biker

MODERN SAN FRANCISCO

The technology and innovation boom in San Francisco has created a new community of urban business bikers. After 15 interviews it became apparent that this community is in need of a backpack that is not only weatherproof but aesthetically professional for their bike commute between work and leisure.

UPAQ CHALLENGE My work on the UPAQ started in a class focused on user research where we learned to conduct interviews and turn feedback into raw data that could be translated into design improvements.

PROBLEM Riding a bike in the city is highly convenient, but carrying your life in a backpack has a lot of problems that haven’t been solved yet.

“My backpack does not have enough back support.” - Malachai Trent “Theres no convenient way to carry a bike U-lock” - Lenny Behnisch

“I nearly get hit by cars every day” - Benjamin Coney

SMART

Sinches for compressing the backpack when less storage is needed.

EASY ACCESS

Base of bag contains a pouch for your keys, U-lock, yoga mat, shoes, or a variety of tools needed while biking

SAFE

Double handholds to reduce slippage.

USER FRIENDLY

Top pouch of the backpack has enough storage for a computer charger, and miscilaneous tools

VISIBILITY

Magnets attach the top flap to the front of the bag and provide a surface for the bike lights to attach too. Bike lights are attached to the backpack for easy access and magnetize to the front flap of the bag. Manufactured by Lucetta lights.

“Bikers face many problems when carrying their lives in a backpack. Along with the every-day essentials, they need easy access to their helmet, lock, key, and lights - all while riding their bike. The Upaq has a solution for that.

FASHION FUSION Modern Fashion has become a fusion of patterns and colors from the 80’s and 90’s. A lot of clothing has gone back into circulation for this reason. Despite the high quality fabric, many ties have fallen out of fashion as business attire but haven’t had an outlet for recycle.

FOOD PACKAGING CHALLENGE This project focused on packaging food from our culture. Being of Cornish descent, I decided to design around their traditional breakfast scone with jam and clotted cream. I did extensive research on origami in the packaging industry and focused my design around using recycled materials creating a clean user experience, and environmentallyfriendly, recyclable packaging.

HALF A SEMESTER - A fully integrated audio system for your kitchen.

PARADOX AUDIO

PARADOX AUDIO SYSTEMS CHALLENGE Bathrooms and kitchens are two of the most shared spaces in the home, as well as the most complained about for their clutter. Paradox Audio Systems provides a clean way to incorperate music into the tiles of your kitchen or bathroom without adding any clutter.

STORYBOARD

HOW PARADOX TILES WORK Given the simplicity of the tile shape, I wanted to translate that simplicity into the user experience. In that way I designed Paradox Tiles to be Bluetooth connected to your device and directly wired seamlessly into your home electricity.

MOCK-UPS Many speakers in the industry are made of ceramic and produce an impressive, high-quality sound. I decided to make my final model out of ceramic to capture this sound quality and match the adjacent tiles in the kitchen. My mock-ups explored a variety of materials such as metal, wood, foam, plastic, and fabric.

PRODUCTION The challenge with building Paradox Audio Systems was to make it easy and convenient for a homeowner to purchase the product with no visible technology other than the electrical wires to ensure a successful installation. Using the remodeling electrical box to make it easier for a technician to install it.

THE COMPANY Paradox Audio Systems was mainly inspired by the clean aesthetics of Braun, Muji, and the Legrand Adorne Series although a lot of the fine details were inspired by Deiter Rams’s Radios. When homeowners are looking to add tiles to their kitchen or bathroom they are given the choice of purchasing all their tiles through Paradox and are given the choice of seamlessly integrating Paradox Audio Systems speaker into that remodel.

SEMESTER HALF TIME

A customizable night light for all ages.

TESSALIGHT CHALLENGE My focus for this project was to design a toy of the future that could grow with you over time. The definition of a toy was not limited by age for this project but I decided to focus my project on the sentimental value people attribute to toys from their childhood.

“There is just as much entertainment in traditional toys but they’re not being enjoyed as much because creativity is being lost.” - Matt 25 - Interview 11/20

THEME Reoccurring themes started to develop even after our third interview. For example people had incredibly creative childhoods that faded over time. Because of that many of our interviewees were reminiscent of the their childlike minds. This may have something to say about the short lived creativity of the childish mind.

MINI PROJECTS

EPO CYCLES

SOLIDWORKS RENDERING The Epo Bicycle was designed by Dutch designer Bob Schiller as his senior project and is now on the market as an affordable and contemporary Dutch bike made entirely in the Netherlands. This is my reverse Engineering of the Epo Bicycle.

RHINO RENDERING The first official project from my first computer rendering class was to design a toy. I was highly interested in the organic shapes of airplanes and wanted to push my understanding of Rhino.
