t’s mid afternoon on a chilly Sunday in February. Taylor has been in the studio all day watching the other 2 models as they completed their hair and makeup and shooting. She is then called to the makeup chair and waits patiently as her hair and makeup are done to perfection. She again waits for the photographer to adjust the lighting and background. It’s time to shoot. Taylor lights up the room once she steps in front of the camera. She moves elegantly, and shows off her gymnastic skills. After a quick snap, snap, snap of the camera; we got the shot and Taylor totally rocked the shoot. This was her first time doing a professional shoot and we think she did amazing! Check out her whole spread on page 40!

BEHIND THE COVER

So much fun! We laughed all day... Taylor is wearing a cute floral crop top and high waisted jeans from Winners. Her funky shoes are also from Winners Her fun necklace has a bug on it! It can be found at H&M.

We made Taylor’s dreams come true by having her star in our photoshoot! Are you our next star? Anyone can be our cover model, just scan here!

WHO SKIS.

Was there ever something that you wanted to try so badly, but you were too afraid of what people would think? Were you ever worried about what your parents would say? What your friends would say? Some girls avoid doing activities because they may feel scared or like they don’t belong. Leah Evans is the founder of a ski program just for girls, called Girls Do Ski in Revelstoke British Columbia.

MIRROR

INTERVIEW Leah and her ski partner on the mountains of Kyrgyzstan

Why do Girls hesitate to join skiing programs and clubs?

I’m not sure why, but I do think it’s about your friends and what their interested in. If there is a direct relationship with a ski club or organization, I think that increases the probability that she will join up.

What inspired you to start this program? I was

competing on the Freeride World tour and wanted to see more females in the competition circuit and also more local females to be connected. I wanted to be a part of the creation of a safe non judgmental space for girls.

“Believe in yourself and have fun!” Photo by: Grant Gunderson

W

hat is Girls Do Ski and Girls Day Out?

Girls Do Ski is Canada’s leading Freeski camp provider for women, specializing in both resort and back-country camps. Some of the many benefits include empowerment, confidence building, and instruction from certified coaches. Girls Day Out: Base activities at each camp include coaching and instructing from professional and certified CSIA, CSCF, CASI female freeskiers, sport psychology exercises, workshops, lunches, equipment demos, prize giveaways and documentation by a professional photographer.

What message do you hope to get across to girls who participate in the program? Believe in yourself and have fun! Explore your personal potential on and off the skis.

What individual has inspired you to be a leader? I don’t think it’s been one person, it’s been my community including my parents and family, friends, people in Revelstoke, other female skiers and sponsors. I’ve had the support to lead this movement and some great teachers and mentors along the way (including athlete and business mentors).

What is one thing that you would want girls reading this to know about skiing and being active? I think being active allows you to explore your personal power: pushing boundaries, creating community, trumph, failure, teamwork. This skill set will help you in every sector of your life and improve your self confidence. Being involved in skiing is such a special way to experience winter in Canada.

How Can girls get involved?

www.girlsdoski.com and you can sign up for a resort, backcountry Girls Day Out camp or if your under 20 for our 20 under 20 program. Smiling participants of GDO.

What is your favourite memory from past outings? I love seeing attendees accomplish something they never thought they could. I recall one attendee shouting, “Get this on camera, I need to show my kids!”

chool was tough for me. I struggled with subjects like science, math and english. I just found school uninspiring and I felt like I would never find my way. All of my friends knew what they wanted to do after high school. My best friend Tia wanted to be a graphic designer, my friend Jason was going to school to be an electrician. It seemed like everyone else had their lives together, and they were headed in the right direction. I couldn’t find anything that interested me, especially something that I was going to do for the rest of my life! I was really feeling the pressure from my parents, my teachers and my friends to make a decision that was going to effect the rest of my life. How am I supposed to choose my life’s path when I’m only 17 years old!? I felt totally helpless, and I was about to make the decision to go back to Grade 12 for a victory lap when I saw a posting about a Co-Op placement 012 MIRROR MAGAZINE

with a local fashion magazine. I had always had an interest in fashion and magazines and this seemed like a really fun opportunity. It was a way to explore my interests and get some school credit! The posting said they needed a student one day a week to help with styling. I applied, and got the job! I started as soon as the new semester began at school. The magazine was called WORN Fashion Journal. It was an independent, small publication that focused on the culture and intelligent side of fashion rather than trends. During my time there I made some amazing, life long friends and made discoveries about myself that I wouldn’t have made at any other Co-Op. I learned that I loved vintage clothing, and that I could tell elaborate stories just by how I styled an outfit. I learned that fashion is much more than following trends, and copying what others are doing. It’s about finding and creating your own personal style and having fun with the clothes you wear. I now know what I want to do for the rest of my life! Fashion is a great field to build a career and find out who you are. I have truely found my calling.

35 Pair s of SHOES? !

INSIDE MY CLOSET

’m Tiffany, and welcome to my closet! Looking at it now, I realize that it’s a little over the top. Not many 16 year olds have a closet like mine. I’m super lucky! But, when you’re an online fashion blogger with 70,000 followers you need to have a large closet. It all started about 5 years ago when I came back from a big shopping trip with my mom. We had had a great day at the mall and I was super excited about my new purchases! I went straight to my room and rummaged through my stuff and put together a few outfits. I then asked my mom to take a few pictures and help me put them on the internet. The rest is history. I have been online ever since, trying my best to inspire my followers and readers with my style. Since I need to produce new content every week, I need to shop...a lot! In order to finance my new online fashion career I got a part time job at the local mall. I work there evenings and weekends, its tough to give up my free time, but in order to keep doing what I love I have to work really hard!

ed

After years of working and blogging and shopping, my closet has grew into what it is now! I think my personal style is a mix of brights, and fun patterns. I try to stay current, but I like to keep a slight vintage feel to my outfits. That’s why my closet is a total mix of new and trendy pieces, with awesome vintage finds. I counted them up, and I have over 35 pairs of shoes! I don’t mean to brag, but I worked hard for those, my pride and joy. They range from comfy warm winter boots, for the harsh Canadian winters to chic and sleek heels for fun nights out! I don’t wear heels every day though, I definitely prefer my classic sneakers that are perfectly worn in. I know that this closet is really intense, but I love what I do on the blog, and in order to continue I have to work really hard at my job and shop smart. (Most of these items were on sale, score!) If you love fashion, and shopping you can start your own blog, work hard, and maybe have a closet just like mine! 013 MIRROR MAGAZINE
