skinnydoublehouse The double row house block is located in Tuscon, Arizona facing the south. Each side houses two separate clients, a couple of writers and a real estate developer. The was program developed with a single wall on each floor that separates each house and creates poche for private spaces. The parti of a single wall to dictate a space continues through all three floors to divide the house.

01

The writers are a 70 year old man and a 65 year old woman. He is a prominent writer of thrillers; she is a food critic. He requires and library and a quiet place to write. She requires a bright kitchen. They are quiet people who entertain their children and grandchildren.

The real estate developer also resides in the house, a 30 year old single man who develops property downtown. He often entertains clients and investors and is a patron of the arts. He has a large collection of modern art, mainly painting, which he likes to display in his house.

portvellmarket Port Vell in Barcelona, Spain is a site that is underused as a public space. With collaboration of a partner, it was concluded that the circulation was unclear. Urban corners of the site proved to be important in discovery of this potential marketplace. Three types of continuity needed to be established; path for foot traffic, vision, and discovery.

Operative mapping led to four vital corners of buildings that orient vision towards a central area of reference on the site. Four main paths approaching the site allowed for data collection about views towards the market and pedestrian traffic.

06

The market was developed through following the paths shown in the operative map. The site is approached through the ramps derived from the pedestrian paths discovered. Entrances to the buildings are only through the market level in order to create engagement with the underground market space.

07

The texture and pattern of the facade of the buildings is continued through the public space and the market to accentuate the paths. In order to preserve an urban environment of continuity, the market occupies the -1 level to take advantage of new usable space.

08

The building forms were unfolded to reveal new properties related to the facades of each building. Trapezoidal shapes prominent in the diagram were used as detailing to develop a pattern to create the surface texture of the market. Ceramic tiles create a double facade of trapezoids.

bryanchildrenstheater The Bryan Childrens Theater is located in downtown Bryan, Texas. This area has a historical culture that is important to the community. The theater site consists of a park and a 100 by 200 square foot area separated by a pedestrian road. The theater program contains a black box theater, administration, costume and prop shops, as well as instructional spaces. The total square footage of the project is around 35,000 square feet.

In collaboration with a partner, a site analysis was carried out in order to better understand the surrounding landmarks. The operative map shown highlights the buildings that have a similar function to a children’s theater. These buildings were related back to the site and became a source of inspiration for the volumes that will separate the program.

The four story design including the underground floor was established through volume heirarchy. The entrance to the building begins in the park to an underground ramp to accentuate the procession into the grand lobby space and incorporate the park space.

1. DESIRED ENTRY PROGRESSION AND PEDESTRIAN CIRCULATION TO UNDERGROUND ENTRANCE

The underground grand lobby opens up to the entrance to the black box theater in the main corten steel volume. The black acrylic glass volume provides a double facade of black glass to allow diffused light in. The white volume also has a double facade of a glass fiber screen to provide daylighting.

The HVAC systems were selected based on the importance of zoning the theater separately from the rest of the spaces. This space must be conditioned separately and without vibrations from the other systems as to not alter the acoustics within the theater.

GRAD CHARETTE_DSGN3100

sextoncottagecharette The sexton cottage is a brief two week charette exhibiting design conecpts of a small cottage to house the cemetery keeper in the Lafayette No. 1 Cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana. The cottage is clad in a granite custom designed screen to showcase the textures and qualities of the surrounding tomb context.

29

The study of the material detail of the surrounding tombs such as the masonry joints, the sexton cottage derived these qualities. The two large CMU walls house the single staircase which leads up to the conference room and office. The ground floor contains public restrooms, meeting space, and storage.

STUDIO_DSGN3100

buildingartsinstitute The Building Arts Institute project was designed for a 36,000 square foot building exhibiting craft and education of the building arts including the study of materials ranging from brick, plaster, wood, stone, and metal work. The context of the site was situated next to Lafayette Cemetery No. 2 in New Orleans, Louisiana. The site maintains a visual connection to downtown New Orleans which allows for the students of the school to relate to the built environment from all scales.

33

The site analysis led to the discovery of the cemetery scale, residential scale, and the downtown scale related to the urban fabric within immediate proximity of the project. The resulting grid system set up a means of order for the program and circulation layout of the institute.
