HELLO
Mag:net:work is a design proposal of interconnecting architecture covering 4 hectares of land. The proposal looks to transform Dundee’s Seabraes Yard into an innovative public redevelopment space. In association with Dundee Waterfront, Mag:net:work embodies the methods of creative placemaking. This suggesting a ‘work live play’ concept between suburban and interurban city space. The site will attract creative industries and visitors to experience Dundee’s Unesco City of Design ethos. Once an old shipping yard this connection with the Tay creates a sense of place through a wave of creativity. Mag:net:work sits on the magnetic North line, facing South onto Dundee’s River Tay.
INTRODUCTION
Mag:net: is the sites meeting point. There is a reception for micro house guests to check-in. The hub also provides a place to eat, drink, socialise and engage in live performance and exhibitions. This is with the hub’s coffee/food bar, gallery space and external amphitheatre. The main hub also provides 3 in-house business offices for rent. These offices provide an internship opportunity. The hub additionally provides rooms for events and workshops. This feature means that people will take an experience away with them. Secondly, the site has two micro house clusters, ‘233 collective’ and ’67 collective’ which both sit on this degree from the main hub. These micro houses provide an opportunity for locals or tourists to visit and experience the site as well as provide residency for artists or interns working within the main hub. Finally, the site is home to an existing building called District 10, designed by ‘aim design’ architects with the ambition to multiply and a provide a place for creative industries.

The Site SITE VISIT
SITE VISIT
Seabraes Yard is currently under construction. Although this is the case, the site has a creative buzz. First entering the site you are greeted with an energetic graffiti path . This part of the site currently hosts graffiti artist competitions and events. This part of the site also invites the public in.
Another interesting factor I liked about the site is the connectivity of paths. The site connects suburban space and interurban space within the city. This is done through the sites sucessful foot and cycle path.
Dundee Architects, Nicoll Russell have designed a footbridge within the site. This addition has connected the public directly to the water front. This is a sucessful addition as Dundee Waterfront is becoming a desired destination point. With the bridges circular aesthetic, this inspired my designs.
In the Distance, the site is home to creative industry office ‘District 10’ designed by Aim Design Architects Dundee. This building is one of many planned to stimulate the site. With Dundee being a Unesco City of Design, This building is a perfect addition to the creative ethos the city has.

The Site SITE ANALYSIS
SITE ANALYSIS SUBURBAN | INTERURBAN | CITY CENTRE
Studying the sites orientation, Seabraes is located between suburban and interurban space . With the City centre being a close neighbour
it was important to think about how to draw people to the site. People are drawn to a busy city centre, this vibe is what seabraes could have.
| Site Analysis|
Looking into the break down of the site, I discovered how accessable the site was from each part of the city. This factor
made me think the site could be a new destination point within the city, drawing a diverse community.

The Site LIVE PROJECT COMPETITION ENTRY
LIVE PROJECT The sketch design competition is one of more than 400 events taking place across Scotland . This is during 2016 as part of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS). The competition is organised by the Festival of Architecture, and a key part of the Scottish Government’s 2016 Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design celebrations.
The space and/or building can be open or closed to the elements. It could be a park, sport, activity or user group space. The proposal should celebrate, support and enhance our young people’s health & wellbeing, imagination, and learning with fun and play, providing the core for your idea.
During the summer of 2016, we were asked to create a summer project,. From research I found there was alot of active dialogue surrounding the site. I came across an architecture competition, a great opportunty. This competition set the bar for my degree show
Site Analysis: How do we ATTRACT people to the site. Research: Transport routes, seabraes solar patterns, connecting the site with the tay. Design Themes and Patterns: Magnetism, the buidling acts as a MAGNET for creative talent. Kirigami paper cutting, the building creates CONNECTIONS between people and space. Indigeninity patterns, Dundee law. The building SUBMERGES with the sites landscape. Dundee Unesco City of Designs: Interviews with two local innovators. Gillian Easson, Creative Dundee and Hazel White, Open Change.

Site LIVE PROJECT COMPETITION ENTRY
Pitch: ‘MAGNETWORK’ attracting and encouraging the creative youth of Dundee to gather and engage in | creative thinking | dialogue | networking | The building is proposed as a social enterprise space. There will be workshop space, event space, a community gathering point and will be funded 50% by grant and 50% trade.
The design of the space was influenced by the notion of peeking out of the landscape, creating flow, drawing people together. This design looked to be sympathetic to the location, south facing onto the tay. The main feature of the design is the roof top ampitheatre. This design feature aims to trigger dialogue between people, stop you in your tracks to take a break, meet someone new and feel inspred.

The design of the buidling came from the playful process of cutting paper and sketching out architectural solutions..

Research and Investigation INTERVIEWS
INTERVIEWS As part of my dissertation research I was looking into the phenomenon of a creative city and how creative placemaking could benefit a city. For each interview I asked questions relating to Dunee’s Unesco City of design title and their professional opinion on what they think the Seabraes Yard site could become. These interviews helped back up my design thinking and rationale for choosing Seabraes Yard to design.
“The Creative City Phenomenon: What are the benefits of creative placemaking and how can this be explored within a UNESCO city of design?

Research and Investigation INTERVIEWS
Gillian Easson, Creative Dundee
Hazel White, Open Change
“Talent retention and attraction, this means making a city sticky... creating a magnet for talent”
“Outreach workshops and service jams” where “service design could be taught… like a city lab with non-traditional backgrounds”
Stewart Murdoch, Director of Dundee Leisure and Culture
Graham Steel, Nicoll Russell Architect
“The demand is there for a new creative platform, especially at the seabraes site”
“Interesting landscape flow and motion between spaces would be good… connecting all three sites … also the bridge we designed could connect into the site”
002.
Research and Investigation DESIGN THEMES
From interviewing local creatives, I was able to draw inspiration from some of the things that were said. I turned these inspirations into design themes. This exploration encouraged me to start designing for the the site and mix business thinking with aesthetic.

DISTRICT 10 | BIKE HUB The site is home to an existing building called District 10, designed by Aim Design Architects with the ambition to multiply and a provide a place for creative industries to set up. Currently there is only one office. I have decided to multiply this by three and add a connective bridge. This bridge provides shelter for a bike hub underneath . The cantileaver design also mimics the aesthetic of the Seabraes footbridge, designed by Nicoll Russell Architects.
