TOP PRIORITY FOR NOLAN By Scott Sanbrook
T
im Nolan is reluctant to measure his success by the numbers displayed on the price board as the hammer falls. Instead, it is the figures in the form guide which tell the true story for Nolan. “It’s much better to have a Group 1 winner than a sales topper,” Nolan says. “Seeing your sales graduates perform on the track is the most important part of all.” Nolan should know. His Murrulla Stud – located at Wingen, just north of Scone in New South Wales’ famed Hunter Valley – last year sold the highest-priced horse ever to pass through the ring at an Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. And six years earlier he was represented at the same sale by a brown colt by I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) who went on to race as Brazen Beau. Not only did Brazen Beau prove to be the Group 1 winner that Nolan aspires to breed, he achieved the feat twice. In winning $1.6 million in prize-money, Brazen Beau claimed the Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) and the time-honoured Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) – both down the Flemington straight. “We are all geniuses after the fact, but Brazen Beau was a lovely yearling,” Nolan says. Rather fittingly, it was a son of Brazen Beau who provided

Nolan with his biggest sales ring thrill. During the 50th edition of the Classic Sale last year, the colt was knocked down for the record-breaking price of $550,000 at Inglis’ Riverside complex at Warwick Farm. “The sale was amazing and by far and away the best result we have had,” Nolan says. “We never dreamt that something like that would happen.” Making the achievement even more significant is the fact Murrulla bought the colt’s dam, Pouter (Dubawi), for clients Warwick and Anne Doughty while in foal to Brazen Beau at the final Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale held at Newmarket in 2017. With customer satisfaction his top priority, Nolan has kept a close eye on the youngster’s progress. The Kris Lees-trained two-year-old races as Midland and displayed his share of ability in winning a barrier trial on the Beaumont track at Newcastle in late December. “He’s won a trial and the connections are happy with him,” Nolan says. “And that makes me happy.” Murrulla capped off a memorable 2019 Classic Sale when its Unencumbered (Testa Rossa) colt from Malbun (Commands) topped the Highway Session (Book 2) at a price of $85,000. Ten sales in Book 1 of the catalogue netted Murrulla an impressive average of $109,300. It’s far from an overnight success story for Nolan, who has been involved in selling racehorses from his childhood days at his family’s highly respected Raheen Stud, which is located near Warwick in Queensland’s Darling Downs. “I was working at the Easter Sales (in Sydney) from the age of 17 or 18,” Nolan recalls. “But I was going to the sales well before then. It was a big thing as a kid to be heading off to Sydney.” Nolan and his wife Celie made a life-changing move in June 2008 when they took over the magnificent Murrulla property. Celie, a former veterinary nurse at Vinery Stud, has worked hard with Tim to develop an esteemed thoroughbred nursery. “It’s very much a family affair,” says Nolan, whose sons
|4|
Mac (10), Jack (7) and Ned (5) are showing an interest in the stud operation. “Everybody does their bit.” Horses thrive at Murrulla, with its lush paddocks sourcing a plentiful water supply from Kingdon Ponds, which is a main tributary to the Hunter River. “All up, we have 520 acres and we are set up to give the horses the best start in life,” Nolan says. Murrulla branched out in 2016 when it teamed up with the Esplin family to stand its first stallion, Office Bearer (Officer), for his initial season at stud. Hot on his heels was the established Charge Forward (Red Ransom), whose Group 1 successes on the track have been matched in the breeding barn. Charge Forward was bred by the Esplins and was among the best of his generation, finishing the closest of seconds to Dance Hero (Danzero) in the 2004 Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) at Rosehill prior to winning The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) at Randwick the following season. At stud, Charge Forward has tallied 19 black-type winners, including 2009 Coolmore Stud Stakes victor Headway. Charge Forward is also forging a reputation as broodmare sire, with his daughters producing star performers She Will Reign (Manhattan Reign), Estijaab (Snitzel) and Sunlight (Zoustar). She Will Reign secured the Slipper in 2017 while Estijaab emulated the feat 12 months later. Continued on page 5>>

<< Continued from page 4 Sunlight won the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) in 2018 before finishing third to Estijaab in the world’s richest juvenile race. “To stand a stallion of Charge Forward’s calibre – even in the twilight of his career – was a wonderful opportunity for a stud such as Murrulla,” Nolan says. Four of Charge Forward’s progeny will appear in Murrulla’s draft at the Classic Sale. “These are the first of the Charge Forwards that we have bred since standing the stallion and we are very keen to see how they go,” Nolan says. Lot 22 is a bay filly from Born Lucky (Lucky Owners), a three-quarter sister to Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Masquerader (Lucky Owners). The Highway Session will feature two other daughters of Charge Forward as well as a colt from the winning mare Amarie (Red Ransom). Lot 715 creates considerable interest being from the stakes-winning two-year-old Miss Helga (Alzao). Miss Helga has produced five foals to race for as many winners, including the 2011-12 Hong Kong champion stayer Liberator (Encosta De Lago). Murrulla’s outstanding draft comprises 14 yearlings in Book 1 and another nine lots in the Highway Session. Proven stallions Written Tycoon (Iglesia), Pierro (Lonhro) and Zoustar (Northern Meteor) – alongside newcomer Maurice (Screen Hero) – are among the sires of youngsters that the stud will parade from Barn H. “We have a very similar draft in strength and size to last year,” Nolan says. “It’s an even bunch of really nice horses.” A Written Tycoon colt from Dwindle (Commands) will go through the ring as Lot 110. Dwindle is a winning half-sister to Tarquin (Hard Spun), a winner of the Pago Pago Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and placegetter in the Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m). Nolan has been impressed by the Written Tycoon colt from Cosmic Debris (Northern Meteor), who is Lot 78.

The sale-topping Brazen Beau - Pouter colt at the 2019 Classic Sale, offered by Murrulla Stud “He is a November, foal but still a precocious type,” Nolan says. Zoustar was Australia’s leading first season sire in 2017-18 and Nolan is delighted to be selling his daughter from Emerald Knight (Fastnet Rock). She is catalogued as Lot 120. Emerald Knight has already been represented on the racetrack by three winners and has the champion two-yearold filly She Will Reign on her pedigree page. Buyers could be rewarded for waiting until Lot 361 for the Maurice colt from Our Miss Bossy (Street Boss). Maurice was hailed as Japan’s Horse of the Year in 2015, while he was also crowned champion sprinter and miler in the same season following six Group 1 successes. His Murrulla yearling from his first crop in the southern hemisphere is the second foal of a five-time winner, predominantly over sprint trips. “I think the Maurice colt will run early and being by such

a well-performed, imported first season sire he should make a lot of appeal to buyers,” Nolan says. Also set to turn heads is a Pierro filly from Tiersamo (Stratum), who is selling as Lot 522. Pierro continues to go from strength to strength at stud and now has 20 stakes winners to his name. Tiersamo is a three-quarter sister to Streama (Stratum), who was a four-time Group 1 winner. The Classic Sale has proven a happy hunting ground for Murrulla since 2009, the year in which the stud was awarded the best presented draft of the sale. “We have had a lot of success there over the years and it’s a sale we target with our horses,” Nolan says. While the quality is there again, Nolan is hesitant to predict a repeat of his 2019 results. “You don’t go thinking that you will top the sale,” he adds. “We have horses who will make nice money and you never know where it will end up - just look at last year.”

ake sure to keep a close eye out at the 2020 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, for you may ‘Witness’ a ‘Prawn’, a ‘Legend’, a ‘Hero’ or even find ‘Contentment’. That’s sure been the case for Hong Kong buyers in recent years, with a slew of eventual top gallopers bought at the summer sale. If anything, the popularity of the Classic sale has only continued to grow with Hongkongers over the last couple of seasons as more horses from the sale find their way from Warwick Farm to the Sha Tin training grounds. Between the start of 2018 and the end of 2019, the Inglis Classic sale produced 51 individual winners in Hong Kong – no mean feat when Classic graduates only make up around three to four per cent of the city’s 1300-odd horse population at any one time. Among that victorious cohort are Group 2 winner Hot King Prawn (Denman), narrowly defeated at his most recent two outings at Group 1 level, and Nothingilikemore (Husson), winner of the Hong Kong Classic Mile for four-year-olds in 2018. Both horses were sold to Hong Kong by bloodstock agent David Price, who – under his Price Bloodstock banner – has had unrivalled success at the Inglis Classic sale. “We are active at every sale, looking for horses that may one day head to Hong Kong,” Price said from his Happy Valley base. “We have a large team on the ground at each of the Australian and New Zealand sales and we will always be bidding. It’s rare that we will leave empty-handed. “In that sense, Classic is just another sale. However, for some reason, we have performed well at this sale – I guess we’ve been just a little bit lucky. We’ve found some genuine top-liners and others who have more than paid their way in Hong Kong. Usually, we are looking for horses that will develop nicely over time – I think Hot King Prawn is the only horse I’ve had in Hong Kong that’s raced as a two-year-old, he’s an exception – and you can find them at the Classic sale.” The Inglis Classic Yearling Sale dates back to 1997 and it was early on in the auction’s history – 2001, to be precise – that Price, in conjunction with Queensland bloodstock agent John Foote, signed on the dotted line for a strong bay son of El Moxie (Conquistador Cielo). Knocked down for $55,000, the gelding – given the name Silent Witness – became the most beloved thoroughbred to grace Hong Kong’s racetracks as he won his first 17 races in a row, including the Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 1, 1200m) twice. In the two decades since, Price and his team have made a number of shrewd purchases at the sale: eventual two-time Group 1 winner Contentment (Hussonet) was purchased for $65,000 in 2012, Nothingilikemore was snapped up for just $40,000 in 2015 while, a year later, Hot King Prawn brought the hammer down at $90,000. Each of these success stories demonstrates one of the oftstated benefits of the Classic sale – that the value for money at the sale is unmatched. However, it is also notable that the four did not boast eye-popping pedigrees either; rather, it was Price and his team’s work on the ground that identified them as potential prospects. “If there is a sale that does offer a lower entry point, I think it might be this one,” he said. “It is Continued on page 8>>

<< Continued from page 7 becoming tougher, but there are some great opportunities under our model. I think it’s fair to say that Classic is a sale which features more of the bread and butter stallions and perhaps some of the pedigrees that don’t instantly stand out. “It’s not all about pedigree here,” Price continued. “For us, it’s about seeing the horses, having that team at the complex and doing the ground work. That’s the case at every sale but I think it’s even more important here. It’s where you might pick up something that can slip through the cracks.” Price and his team will be active again this year, as will other Hong Kong buyers – and not just those who are looking for horses to take to Asia, either. In fact, the Inglis Classic sale has a strong track record in recent seasons with Hong Kong owners who are looking to expand their racing portfolios down under. In 2017, Carmel Size stretched to $400,000 to purchase a grey Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) colt for her then-client, prominent Hong Kong owner Boniface Ho. Out of Pinnochio (Encosta De Lago), a sister to five-time Group 1 winner Racing To Win, the colt was named Classique Legend.

It didn’t take long for the Les Bridge-trained galloper to hit his stride, winning the Arrowfield Sprint (Gr 2, 1200m) for three-year-olds in his first preparation and stamping himself as a potential contender for the world’s richest race on turf, the Everest, in the process. It remains to be seen whether Classique Legend will race in Australia again, with the now-gelding slated to join the Caspar Fownes yard in Hong Kong. Potentially, he may face off against his younger sibling, with his Sebring (More Than Ready) half-brother Aethero also taking Hong Kong by storm in recent months. While Ho has been buying in Australia for years, he has been joined of late by new kids on the block David Lui and Karl Chan of Sweetbriar Equine. Two years ago, at the first sale held at Inglis’ new Warwick Farm complex, Lui and Chan were searching for new additions to their fledgling venture, with yearlings by Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Pierro (Lonhro) holding particular appeal. “When I went to the sale, I looked at all of the Pierros,” Lui recalled. “One stood out immediately. He was one of the more relaxed types, he had a very good attitude and I remember thinking that he had plenty of scope. We looked at him three or four times and he was high on our list. We knew that his dam, Sookie, was a very good horse – and now we can say that Shadow Hero is a very good horse too.” If anything, that may be an understatement. Purchased for $260,000, Shadow Hero stamped himself as a stayer of the future with dominant wins in the Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and the Gloaming Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) and looks one to watch heading towards the Sydney autumn. Generally, the 2021 Hong Kong Derby (RL, 2000m) would be a logical target for a horse with Shadow Hero’s profile, but Lui said he was bought to race in Australia and he was likely to remain in the country after his autumn three-year-old campaign. “We bought him thinking he’d fit Australia very well,” Lui
I ALWAYS LIKE TO GO TO THE INGLIS CLASSIC, THOUGH, AND I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING BACK THERE AGAIN THIS YEAR. HOPEFULLY WE CAN FIND ANOTHER SHADOW HERO! - DAVID LUI said. “Actually, when we bought him, we didn’t think that he’d get 2000m and beyond being by a Golden Slipper winner. We’ve since seen that Pierro can get some good stayers like Levendi and Pinot – and Shadow Hero too! We haven’t really thought about taking him to Hong Kong.” So what is it about the Inglis Classic sale that appeals to Hong Kong buyers? Like Price, Lui believes that there is value for money for those willing to look away from the fanciest pedigrees. “At the Inglis Classic, the prices are reasonable,” he said. “There are many different types there and you can buy horses that may not have the best pedigree but they are horses that will train on. In Hong Kong, many horses don’t really race until they are four. If they race before that, we know that they won’t be hitting their straps until much later. There does seem to be more types suitable for Hong Kong here.” “I always like to go to the Inglis Classic, though, and I’m looking forward to getting back there again this year. Hopefully we can find another Shadow Hero!”

Classic Combination: Quality & Value - The Classic Story Of Castelvecchio
By Lewis Lesbirel
J
apanese racehorses broke many a heart on the international stage in 2019, though few can claim to have felt the sting quite as much as the connections of Castelvecchio (Dundeel). Cast your minds back to October 26 when Moonee Valley played host to the 99th running of the time-honoured W.S. Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m). The race produced an all too familiar outcome, going the way of a superstar mare, but this time she did not go by the name of Winx (Street Cry). It was Lys Gracieux (Heart’s Cry) who landed the spoils in taking fashion, with the Ottavio and Wendy Galletta-raced Castelvecchio faring best of the home contingent, crossing the line a clear second ahead of a host of elite-level winners. “We were just delighted to get a start in the race,” says Wendy Galletta, before going on to recall the events that led to her husband’s purchase of Castelvecchio for $150,000 at the 2018 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. “It’s a funny story really,” she says. “Ottavio picked a couple of horses out of the catalogue before we went to the Classic Sale. We had a look at them and liked them both, and we said to Paul Perry ‘come and have a look at these couple of horses’. “We’ve known Paul for a long time and he said, ‘yeah I have those two marked down as well so let’s get them out’, so we had a look at them. It turns out the two were Castelvecchio and Pandano, who are both by Dundeel. “We said we’d get one each - we bought the one out of St. Therese (Castelvecchio) and Paul bought the one out of Milanesa (Pandano).” In a weird coincidence, the early careers of both horses followed a strikingly similar path. Castelvecchio was first to grace the racecourse, coming from the clouds with a barnstorming finish to win a Canterbury Maiden in eye-catching style. Tony McEvoy, who trained the
runner-up Just Zerene (Zoustar), was quick to congratulate the Gallettas and told them they had a Group 1 horse on their hands. The offers flooded in from Hong Kong, but the Gallettas sat tight. Eight days later Pandano took out a Newcastle Maiden in decisive fashion, setting up a clash with Castelvecchio in the inaugural running of the $2 million Inglis Millennium (RL, 1200m). Castelvecchio once again came with the wettest of sails to win in impressive fashion, while Pandano crossed the line in 11th. Much to the Gallettas’ delight, Castelvecchio continued on an upward trajectory thereafter, winning the Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Randwick before returning as a three-yearold to finish a gallant runner-up in both the Spring Champion Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and the Cox Plate. Those performances were enough to prompt Arrowfield Stud to secure a controlling interest in the colt, a move which will see him stand alongside his sire Dundeel (High Chaparral) at the culmination of his racing career. “I was in the room with John Messara when he won the Queen Elizabeth and I loved that horse,” Ottavio says of emerging sire Dundeel. “He was magnificent, and Castelvecchio is the spitting image of his old man. I used to have a mare by Dehere (Castelvecchio’s dam sire) who was very speedy, so I thought Castelvecchio’s pedigree was terrific. “He was also a lovely yearling colt, very athletic and intelligent. I used to call him up at the sale and he’d come to us straight away. Now he’s the best three-year-old in Australia.” Castelvecchio will be given the chance to justify that lofty moniker this autumn, with a number of Group 1 targets on the agenda. “He’ll have two trials and then hopefully onto the Hobartville (Hobartville Stakes, February 22),” Wendy reveals. “That’ll be a bit short for him (1400m), but you have to start somewhere. “He does look amazing. We had a great spring and I think we’re going to have a fabulous autumn.” This is where Ottavio interjects, the excitement building in his voice. “He’s very well - he’s made nice progress and we have big plans for him,” he says. “We’re going to win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, we hope, and we’re going to run in the Rosehill and Randwick Guineas. Hopefully we win them all.” There is something infectious about Ottavio’s optimism and, as well as his commendable ambition, it is a trait he has instilled in those who work closest with him. Castelvecchio’s young trainer, Richard
| 11 |
ANZ Bloodstock News 2020 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale Supplement
Litt, has shown both qualities in abundance and it is clear he remains somebody whom the Gallettas have immense faith in. “Richard is a very, very nice fella,” Ottavio says. “He rings up every morning and we discuss our horses with him. He listens to us and we listen to him. “I wouldn’t swap him for any trainer because he looks after the horses magnificently. He’s one of the nicest blokes I know and deserves a lot of praise. “We bought Victory Lodge Stables and he’s going to move in there in April. He’ll have some of the dearest yearlings in Australia, so he’ll have to produce.” The latter comment was made in jest, and now it’s Wendy’s turn to sing Litt’s praises. “He has a lot of knowledge too for such a young trainer and he’s learning all the time,” she says. “It wouldn’t matter when you went and visited the stables because it all runs like clockwork. “He lives and breathes the horses and that really suits us. It’s really important to us that our horses are well looked after.” It becomes evident there is merit to the Gallettas’ emphasis on horse welfare when we talk about why they chose Litt to train their horses. Ottavio tells of how he previously owned a horse by the name of Malavio (Snitzel), who encountered a nasty foot injury. Litt picked him up and looked after him for a month following an operation to save his life, but despite his best efforts Malavio was eventually humanely euthanised. “Nobody could have done a better job with the horse than Richard,” Wendy recalls. “We’ve had horses in bigger stables before, but I like the smaller stable with a more hands-on approach. It just suits us better. “If you do the right thing by people and you do your very best, then everyone gets results. It is a business thing, but it’s working out very successfully, and I think that’s primarily because Richard comes from a very nice family. Ottavio had Richard’s father, Jim, training for him before Richard and that’s when Malavio came on the scene. “To go with someone so young with what has
WE’RE GOING TO WIN THE QUEEN ELIZABETH STAKES, WE HOPE, AND WE’RE GOING TO RUN IN THE ROSEHILL AND RANDWICK GUINEAS. HOPEFULLY WE WIN THEM ALL - OTTAVIO GALLETTA turned out to be a very valuable horse, it’s a leap of faith, but Ottavio is like that. If he sees somebody doing the right thing then he’ll take that leap of faith with them.” Another leap of faith, at least in financial terms, was taken by the Gallettas when parting with $1.9 million for a son of the late Japanese sire sensation Deep Impact (Sunday Silence) at last month’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Ottavio quips that his spending is “done for this season until the next Group 1 win”, but the prospect of adding further ammunition to Litt’s burgeoning string at the Classic Sale remains a very realistic one, at least according to Wendy. “We’ve got the book open and we’re looking at it every day,” she says. “It’s a very big interest of ours and at this point in our lives it’s nice to settle back and have this. “We love the Classic Sale and we’ll be out there with bells on. We’ll be out at Warwick Farm for the Easter Sale, too. “We have a nice Harbinger colt that we bought off Arrowfield at Easter last year who we haven’t raced yet. He’s just getting ready to maybe have a trial, but he’s a lovely horse out of a Japanese mare. We’ll see what happens with him.” A Japanese mare. The very breed that came between Castelvecchio and Cox Plate glory. It’s a funny old game sometimes.
