Premier Power - Welcome

By James Oldring

T

he Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale boasts a stunning track record of success, with 13 individual Group 1-winning graduates since 2018 – a tally only surpassed by the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in Australia. These graduates include Nature Strip, Santa Ana Lane and Hey Doc, and there are plenty of pedigrees on show in the 2020 catalogue to suggest this run of success is set to continue. The catalogue features representation from the leading sires in Australia and New Zealand, as well as offspring of

35 first season sires – many of whom have already proven hugely popular with buyers. The sale also features a colt by global powerhouse Galileo, the only yearling progeny of his catalogued for public auction in the southern hemisphere in 2020, as well as three youngsters by his champion son, Frankel. All of us at ANZ Bloodstock News wish buyers and vendors the very best of luck and look forward to following the successes of this year’s graduates once they hit the track.

Good Luck!

aniel Nevill believes you must listen closely first in order to get your own message heard. Nevill has paid particular attention to those he respects throughout his working life and now it’s his peers who are taking notice of the young stud manager as his actions speak louder than words. “I am so lucky to have some great people around me who are happy to share their knowledge with me,” the 32-year-old says. “They are there for me any time I need advice. “I’m always learning and trying to improve the quality of my horses as I get different ideas on pedigrees and types.” Nevill operates Hollylodge Thoroughbreds – a picturesque 131-acre property at Avenel in north-eastern Victoria. Topping his list of trusted advisers is Nevill’s partner of four years, Katie Willcox. “Katie is one of the best vets in Australia and she is outstanding with everything to do with horses,” Nevill says. “To have a vet by your side – especially one as knowledgeable as Katie – is a huge asset.” Inglis auctioneers and bloodstock consultants Simon Vivian and Brett Gilding along with Edinburgh Park Stud’s Ian Smith have also played mentoring roles for Nevill. “I know they are always up for a chat,” Nevill says. “There are a lot of different characters in the racing game and I love listening to what they have to say and seeing what I can pick up along the way.” Nevill was involved with the family business at Hollylodge for 15 years before taking over in 2016. “For a while we were a small farm who stood stallions, but they just weren’t commercial,” Nevill says. “We’ve changed direction and concentrated more on the broodmare side of things.

www.anzbloodstocknews.com

“We are constantly looking to upgrade our mares and make a name for ourselves that way.” The Hollylodge team’s skill set is complemented by loyal staff members Lauren Hosking and Finton Butler. “They deserve a lot of credit as they have as much to do with the farm as anyone,” Nevill says. Nevill is looking to build on his reputation with a quality draft at this year’s Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale. Hollylodge will offer five colts in the Premier Session as well as 11 yearlings in the Showcase Session of the sale. “We had a really strong draft last year and I’d rate this one even better,” Nevill says. “The best thing is we have something for everyone – from the big trainers to the small ones and the ready-to-runners and overseas traders.” Nevill has no doubt Lot 398 will grab the attention of buyers. The Zoustar (Northern Meteor) colt is from the Listed winner Rock The Moment (Rock Of Gibraltar) and is a half-brother to Want To Rock (Wanted), who has won in Melbourne. His second dam, Moment’s Pleasure (Archregent), claimed the Reisling Slipper Trial (Gr 2, 1200m) and was Group 1-placed in the STC Winfield Classic (Gr 1, 1500m). “The Zoustar is the real deal,” Nevill says. “He is the right shape, has a beautiful head and an outstanding walk.” Hollylodge will also offer sons of So You Think (High Chaparral), Sebring (More Than Ready), Denman (Lonhro) and Winning Rupert (Written Tycoon) in the Premier Session. “The So You Think colt is a lot like his old man,” Nevill says. “He has a great shoulder and looks like the type who will get out to a classic trip.” The bay is from The Ivy (Street Sense) and is closely related

|4|

to Newcastle Cameron Handicap (Gr 3, 1500m) winner New Tipperary (High Chaparral). Nevill is impressed with the colt by the ill-fated Sebring from Lumic (Haradasun), who is directly descended from champion two-year-old filly Midnight Fever (Luskin Star). “He is a dream colt who is super correct and strong,” Nevill says. “He’s very much in the mould of one of Sebring’s best in Dissident while he has the Super Vobis bonus attached as well. “And they are not making any more Sebrings so this is one of the last opportunities to get one.” Continued on page 5>> Daniel on the farm with a Brazen Beau foal

Among Hollylodge’s << Continued from page 4 representatives in the Showcase Session is a filly by emerging sire Headwater (Exceed And Excel). The chestnut’s dam, Cha Cha Chestnut (Elusive Quality), has produced three winners from four to race and hails from the family of champion European filly Balanchine (Storm Bird). “We have a sneaky Headwater who I think will be a standout in the Showcase Session,” Nevill says. Colts by Star Witness (Starcraft), Dissident, Al Maher (Danehill) and Reward For Effort (Exceed And Excel) and fillies by Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock), Nicconi (Bianconi) and Winning Rupert are included in the Hollylodge offering. “The best part is a number of those lots will suit the breeze-ups,” Nevill says. Hollylodge has compiled its draft with the support of Spendthrift Australia. “I sent a lot of mares to Spendthrift early on as I like the way they go about their business,” Nevill says. “They are returning the favour by sending horses to us to sell and we have enjoyed some success together.” Something special will be required at Oaklands Junction for Nevill to overshadow his experience at the corresponding sale last year. Nevill looks back with great satisfaction at the sale of Lot 313 for his clients Matthew and Trudi Christie. The colt was by Poet’s Voice (Dubawi) and the first foal of the placegetter Millsee (Street Sense). “The Christies had inherited the mare and paid under $10,000 for the service fee to Poet’s Voice,” Nevill says. “We foaled down the mare at Hollylodge and then the colt was sent to me as a weanling.” Nevill can hardly put into words what he felt when his well-presented youngster was knocked down for $170,000. “It was the first horse the Christies have ever sold through the sales ring,” Nevill says. “To see him bring that sort of money was incredible...the best moment I have ever had at the sales.

|5|

“It’s what you do this job for.” Hollylodge has six of its own broodmares as well as 20 permanent agisters, up to 80 mares during the breeding season and carry out more than 50 foalings. Nevill will follow the Premier sale with a draft of 16 for the Inglis Melbourne Gold Yearling Sale on April 19 as well as ten weanlings for the Inglis Great Southern Sale in June. “It’s busy all-year round,” Nevill says. “We’ve had a lot of success with horses at the cheaper end of the scale and we now have access to the better quality. “It certainly makes a difference as we strive to improve.” Nevill will judge Hollylodge’s efforts at the Premier sale in relation to the total sale figures.

ANZ Bloodstock News 2020 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale Supplement

“If our average for the main session is better than the sale average, I will be happy,” he says. Nevill has been working his way to the top ever since winning the Racing Victoria/Tabcorp Thoroughbred employee of the year award back in 2011 but is the first to admit there are still more mountains to climb. “The dream is to sell horses who win Group 1 races,” he says. “I would like it to happen tomorrow but it’s hard to do it fast. “I’ve seen a lot of people come in and go out whereas I plan to be here for the long haul. “I just have to keep my head down, put in the effort and get there one day.”

nter Prince of Sussex into any search engine and prepare to be bombarded with excruciating daily updates on Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, and his wife, Meghan Markle, whose decision in January to relinquish their duties to the British royal family in favour of financial independence and less intrusive media scrutiny has, both paradoxically and painfully, become the most newsworthy story of 2020. However, reach beyond the bizarre features proclaiming genuine uncertainty as to how the high-profile couple – one a multi-millionaire heir and the other a multimillionaire US TV star – will plot a path to financial stability in their new life and it is possible to unearth coverage of the equine Prince Of Sussex (Toronado), whose regal moniker is far more befitting, and interesting, given his racecourse achievements as a juvenile last season. While Prince Of Sussex need not encounter the wrath of the Queen or face criticism for his continued use of private aircraft in light of a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ attitude towards climate preservation, he is a lucrative financial beacon in and of himself. An excellent advert for the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, having realised $145,000 when knocked down to Carringbush Park from the draft of Swettenham Stud in 2018, Prince Of Sussex subsequently won the inaugural renewal of the The Showdown (1200m) at Caulfield last April before being sold to Hong Kong-based owner Larry Yung Chi Kin for $1.75 million. Originally trained by Matt Laurie for a syndicate headed by majority shareholder Paul Dugan, one that also included his breeder Chris Jackson, Prince Of Sussex left behind an inauspicious debut at Pakenham in January – running fourth when clearly in need of the experience – to land the VOBIS Gold Rush (1000m) at Bendigo in March prior to his explosive success in The Showdown – a $1 million contest restricted to the progeny of VOBIS Sires-nominated stallions who are also nominated to both Super VOBIS and VOBIS Gold. A lucrative example of Victorian breeding who was showcased to the market at Victoria’s premier sale, Prince Of Sussex boasts an endearing backstory, with Jackson having raced his grand-dam, Diamond Cove (Octagonal). “I had an interest in Diamond Cove, who was a very good mare, winning seven races,” says Jackson via WhatsApp from Antarctica in the middle of February, proving his thrill-seeking desires extend far beyond just the breeding of racehorses. Premier Power - Prince Proves Premier Poster Boy

“After she was sold, I was << Continued from page 6 on the lookout for her offspring and subsequently bought and raced Il Diamante (Prince Of Sussex’s dam) with a group of mates. She was in training with Peter Moody and we knew she was smart, but she only raced four times due to injury. “At the end of her racing career, I asked Adam Sangster (stud principal) if we could leave her at Swettenham and breed from her. His staff have been great in looking after her and first foal, Algadon Miss, gave us a great start by winning five from ten.” A former stable companion of Prince Of Sussex at Matt Laurie’s Mornington base, Algadon Miss (Equiano) has recorded four city successes, three at Moonee Valley and one at Caulfield. Meanwhile, Il Diamante formed part of dual Group 1-winning miler Toronado’s first southern hemisphere book, which numbered 175 mares at a fee of $22,000 (inc GST) in 2015. Foaled, reared and prepared for sale at Swettenham, the young Prince Of Sussex was a delight to work with in the early days, according to the stud’s sales and nominations manager, Sam Matthews. “He probably didn’t come into his own until he went into a prep,” Matthews says. “He thrived on the work and he liked it – he was an intelligent horse and he took it all his stride. He was ready to go each morning and happy to go out. He continued to work for you and always wanted to please – he really blossomed. “When you find them like that, you know they are going to be a real racehorse. We actually thought he would bring a bit more money, but Chris wanted to get him to the right home. “At that stage, Toronado was a first season sire and they can have a limit because people want to see what they do. If he went through the ring now, given what Toronado has done, I think he would be closer to the $300,000 mark.” Toronado’s ability in the covering shed has been well advertised in both hemispheres since, with his first Australian crop also including progressive Tasmanian filly Still A Star, who completed a hat-trick of black-type wins in the Strutt Stakes (Listed, 2100m) on February 9. A former resident of the National Stud in Newmarket, Toronado now stands the northern hemisphere breeding season at Haras de Bouquetot in France, the farm run by his racing owner, Sheikh Joaan Al Thani. His record in Europe is gradually gathering pace, while the son of High Chaparral (Sadler’s Wells) proved the most popular sire in Victoria last year, covering 197 mares at a fee of $27,500 (inc GST), and Matthews believes his mating versatility has curried favour among a range of breeders. “From a race-record perspective, he was a champion miler with a real turn of foot, and he gets a lot of those speed and middle-distance mares,” Matthews says. “But he can also go up and cover those 2000-metre mares and get a real nice Derby or Oaks-type of horse, so he can get the full range of it. “He doesn’t produce just one type of horse and his progeny have sold well every year, so people are happy from a commercial point of view, knowing they can sell the yearlings. But people also know he can produce a nice racehorse, so he ticks those two main boxes.” Reflecting on the decision to offer Prince Of Sussex at the Premier sale, Matthews adds: “Being a Victorian farm, Premier is our main sale and we try to support the auction with our best horses. “He had the right sort of profile for a trainer to buy – the whole family has got a lot of Victorian blood in it – and plenty of Victorian trainers had been to see him on the farm. “We probably could have looked at a few other sales, but with his profile and the VOBIS scheme, we wanted to support Victoria as much as we could.” Retrospect is always telling with thoroughbreds, but if the $145,000 shelled out for Prince Of Sussex as a youngster looked light at the time, the price tag was simply paltry when he took his career earnings to $682,750 with victory in The Showdown. While such lucrative riches are difficult to envisage, Jackson says Prince Of Sussex showed plenty of ability from an early stage, rewarding his faith to buy back into the horse. “I think Swettenham thought he might have realised a bit more than he did, but we were happy to sell,” he says. “After

meeting Paul Dugan, who purchased him, he kindly offered us the chance to buy back into him, so the four of us at the sale on the day took 25 per cent. “Matt was quickly excited by him and in a very short time we had some great experiences, topped by The Showdown. We genuinely thought he was the best horse in the race, and he showed us that on the day – it was very exciting.” Ridden by Michael Dee and sent off the $3.60 secondfavourite, Prince Of Sussex quickened a length and threequarters clear of his 15 rivals in The Showdown and here Charmein Bukovec, executive officer of Thoroughbred Breeders Victoria, fondly recalls the immediate celebrations. “It was such an interesting race-day buzz last year. There were so many excited owners with the connections of Prince Of Sussex,” she says. “I remember standing in the mounting yard behind them and they went absolutely nuts when he hit the line – they were so excited. For them to win a $1 million race, I can’t imagine what was going through their minds.” Prince Of Sussex proved the perfect poster boy for The Showdown, the flagship contest on Victorian Owners and Breeders Raceday at Caulfield. An expanding concept, the valuable fixture will this year include the inaugural running of the Vobis Sires Guineas – a $500,000 three-year-old race run over 1600 metres in April. Reflecting on the gravitas of the VOBIS scheme in general, Bukovec continues: “Matt targeted Prince Of Sussex at The Showdown and he obviously saw it as a great carrot for the horse. It’s a great incentive scheme for mare owners to breed back to VOBIS sires and for owners to compete in the twopart series. “As a programme, VOBIS has long had an effect on sales prices and we know that trainers will go to the sales and seek out of a VOBIS horse. “Prince Of Sussex also highlights the success Victorian-bred horses are able to achieve. It’s got

people talking and it’s great to hear trainers and syndicators saying they’re targeting these contests.” Unfortunately for Victorian racing fans, Prince Of Sussex will not have the opportunity to record an elusive VOBIS double given he is now stabled with leading Hong Kong trainer John Size under the name of Lucky Express. While he has not run since leaving Australia, he has trialled four times – winning at Sha Tin in November – and is officially rated 82. He is set to start in three-year-old company at some stage in March, with the early indications suggesting he will cut the ice in good company. The only son of Toronado to be officially registered on the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s website at the time of writing, Prince Of Sussex is not the only progeny of the Swettenham shuttler set to race in the jurisdiction. Indeed, a number of Toronado colts purchased at last year’s Premier sale were destined for Hong Kong – including a $130,000 youngster knocked down to this season’s leading trainer in Hong Kong, Ricky Yiu – while the Arrowfield Stud-owned Powertrain, who became a four-time winner at Newcastle in December, will continue his career in the Far East. Commenting on the suitability of Toronado’s progeny to race in Hong Kong, Matthews adds: “They have got a fair rap on Toronado given they know he can do it in both hemispheres. “The fact they’ve been bought by good judges to go to Hong Kong gives them an extra boost and there are probably six of them up there now.” Toronado is set to be represented by nine lots at this year’s Premier sale and while unearthing a future Prince Of Sussex will be a competitive undertaking given the performance of both horse and sire in recent times, not to mention the riches dangled by VOBIS incentives, there is something rather satisfying about a regally-named animal performing so well at a time whereby the fortunes of the royal family are occupying an entirely contradictory trajectory. That said, it remains unwise to consider Duke Of York as an appropriate title for a yearling anytime soon.

Premier Power - Two Bays Build On 2019 Successes

BUILD ON

Andrew Hawkins

F

resh off a 2019 that can only be described as stellar, boutique stud Two Bays Farm will be sending its largest draft ever to the 2020 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale with hopes high that the property can produce further stakes winners in the years to come. In just six years, the Ross Ferris-owned operation, based at Flinders down on the Mornington Peninsula, has quickly established a reputation for quality and excellence from its small group of yearlings sent through the sales each autumn. It was 2019 though that saw the best results for Two Bays graduates, both for those bred on the farm and those that were prepared by the team for auction. “For sure, 2019 was a good year, no doubt,” says Rob

Carlile, manager of Two Bays Farm. “That’s what it’s all about for us, at every point; we want to produce and prepare horses to achieve the best that they can on the racetrack. For us, it’s not really about what they can sell for. From the time they are out on the hills here, beginning their preparation, we just want to produce horses that can go out there and compete, that can be honest and perform to the best of their ability. Our results in 2019 are the best bit of marketing to demonstrate what we are all about.” By its nature, breeding is a long-term game. This will be the first sale in which Two Bays Farm can benefit from decisions taken almost five years ago, before the 2015 spring, when they set their mating plans for their small cohort of mares. The following spring, 2016, was a particularly prosperous one for the farm, although it may not have been immediately

apparent at the time. Just seven horses were born on the farm that year; six were sold at either the 2018 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale or that year’s Melbourne Premier event. Among those to emerge from that small group were Kubrick (Shooting To Win), the inaugural winner of the

<< Continued from page 8 $1m Bondi Stakes (1600m) for three-year-olds, and I Am Eloquent (I Am Invincible), victorious in the Jim Moloney Stakes (1400m, Listed). While both were beaten in their respective Guineas at Caulfield in October, the fact that both had earned the right to tackle the best of their generation is a source of pride for Carlile. “That year, we had seven foals born on the farm and we sold six,” Carlile said. “From such a small crop, to get two into Group 1 fields, into the best 16 or so horses for your age group, that’s no easy feat and it’s something we’re very happy about. It’s hard enough getting them to the sales in one piece, let alone seeing them progress to the level that they did. “In the end, it’s a massive team effort and you’re only as good as those who work with you. You’re as strong or as weak as your team and it’s obviously over a number of years too, so to see the horses go on to achieve what they have, it’s great.” Others to have been prepared by the farm include Military Zone (Epaulette), winner of both the Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m, Group 3) and the Fred Best Classic (1400m, Group 3) for Triple Crown Syndications last year, and Easy Eddie

(Super Easy), who reached his career peak with a placing in The Galaxy (1100m, Group 1) behind Nature Strip (Nicconi) and Pierata (Pierro). This year, among a draft of 19 horses (following the withdrawal of Lot 273, a Manhattan Rain half-sister to Military Zone), there are only three homebreds set to go through the ring. “Lot 378 is a Sebring filly out of Queen Of Eight, she’s very much a jump and run filly,” Carlile said. “I’m sure she’ll attract some interest. There’s also the Hinchinbrook filly out of Sweven, Lot 475, while we’ve got a colt going through as well, the first foal of Fifty Ways, by Written Tycoon. He’s Lot 163. That’s it for us in terms of horses we bred. “Most of ours are for other clients,” he continued. “We have some great clients, both locally and interstate, who have continued to support us year after year and we are very grateful for that. Bob Tayton, who sent Easy Eddie to us, he’ll usually send us one. Makybe have supported us the last three years. They could go anywhere but they haven’t changed, we’ve got an Astern colt and a Shalaa colt for them this year. “The Butlers up in Seymour have sent us a Brazen Beau colt out of Sheeza Commander, Lot 422, that’s sure to have plenty of interest. Down the road, Gary Hutchins from Catalina Pastoral Company has sent us a Deep Field colt. And from Queensland, we have a well-bred Vancouver colt for River Junction, a half-brother to their Group 1-placed filly Traveston Girl, so we do have great support from all over. “Two of our colts, a Brazen Beau and a Written Tycoon, I haven’t met yet as they are currently across at Ohukia Lodge in Cambridge. They do a great job preparing them and I trust them with their yearling preparations.” Carlile will also be sending two fillies to the 2020 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, the first time that Two Bays Farm has offered yearlings at the Sydney sale under his watch. “We’ve got the half-sister to Kubrick heading up

ANZ Bloodstock News 2020 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale Supplement

there, she’s by Written Tycoon out of Alcatraz. We’ve also got a Pride Of Dubai filly out of Count Your Fingers, the half-sister to Irish Vega. It’s an exciting new phase for the farm,” he said. For Carlile and the team at Two Bays, it’s all about sticking to tried and tested methods when it comes to preparing their yearlings for their big moment in the sales ring, whether it’s at Oaklands or at Warwick Farm. “We rely on a lot of hand walking, while our horses will see a paddock nearly every day as well,” he said. “It’s old school in a sense, but we try to keep it as natural as possible in that environment. We’ve found it works in keeping horses happy and healthy and allowing us to send them through at the top of their game. In the end, we’re just trying to extract the best from them in order to produce a proper product for buyers. “Ross is great, he understands if a horse isn’t ready to go through or if there is a setback. He’s realistic, he won’t rush them through just to get them there. It’s all part of ensuring that Two Bays sends horses through the ring who are ready on the day and ready for their careers on the track.”

Premier Power - Pedigrees To Look Out For

PEDIGREES TO LOOK OUT FOR

S

ix of the top ten offerings sold at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale were by Yarraman Park’s I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit) and Darley’s Exceed And Excel (Danehill), with the leading stallions responsible for three offerings apiece. They also notched the top two spots on the averages. Redoute’s Choice’s (Danehill) sons, Not A Single Doubt and Snitzel, were third and fifth respectively, that duo being split by Coolmore’s leading first season sire American Pharoah (Pioneer Of The Nile). In New Zealand, these same five sires (albeit with very small numbers) were also prominent, being responsible for three of the top seven youngsters to pass through the NZB National Yearling Sale at Karaka. For the Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale to buck that trend would be most unusual and this year’s catalogue includes all the top sires from many of the great distaff families. Day two appears to be particularly strong, with four lots catalogued by I Am Invincible and three by Snitzel. Quickly out of the blocks with Lot 1 is a Not a Single Doubt colt from a winning Zabeel (Sir Tristram) daughter of Honor Bound (Honor Grades), who scored at both Group 1 and Group 2 level, including the Easter Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) at Ellerslie. American Pharoah is represented by Lot 28, a filly from a winning Exceed And Excel half-sister to the Group 3 scorers Sweynesse (Lonhro) and Rimraam (Commands). Three offerings by Frankel (Galileo) include Lot 39, a half-sister to Villiers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) winner All Legal (Al Maher). Her dam is a half-sister to Hong Kong Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) hero Glorious Days (Hussonet).

According to the auctioneers, Lot 79 is the only Galileo (Sadler’s Wells) yearling to be offered anywhere in the southern hemisphere this year. That alone will make this colt popular, while his grand-dam was the champion three-year-old filly of her year in Italy. Three-time champion sire Snitzel is represented by Lot 80, a filly from the Ellerslie Group 2 winner Capella (Rip Van Winkle), herself a daughter of Group 3 and Listed winner Limerick (Grosvenor). Lot 96 is a colt by Australia’s dual champion sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill). His dam, Chocolicious (Kahal), was a South African Grade 1 winner and her sole foal to race is the Group 3-placed, five-time winner Notation (Fastnet Rock). The half-brother to triple Group 1 winner Moment Of Change (Barely A Moment) is Lot 152. The colt is by international siresensation Exceed And Excel, who has produced more than 160 stakes winners worldwide. The sire of brilliant sprinter Sunlight, Zoustar (Northern Meteor) has Lot 189, a filly from a winning half-sister to the ten-time Group winner Gold Edition (Lion Hunter), who landed both the Ascot Vale Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).
