MISS FINLAND (ex Forest Pearl by Woodman) Sale: 2005 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale Price: $450,000 Purchaser: Badgers Bloodstock Vendor: Arrowfield Stud The darling of Arrowfield Stud principal John Messara, Miss Finland claimed five Group 1 wins through her career, from the Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) at two, through to the Arrowfield Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at three, with a Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m), VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) and Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) sandwiched between, all representing the famed yellow and black Arrowfield silks, as she was named champion two- and three-year-old. A $450,000 purchase, she was part of the 2005 crop of Redoute’s Choice yearlings that sold at an average of over $600,000 at the Inglis Easter Sale that year, siring six yearlings that sold for $1 million or more. Preparing a Champion

Vinery Stud will offer one its biggest drafts ever at this year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. The high-level success of their graduates in recent times will draw plenty of attention to their offering at Riverside. Jo Mckinnon caught up with Vinery’s long-time bloodstock manager Adam White to discuss some of the philosophies that sit behind their ability to rear such good horses year after year.

that our focus is not just generated towards juveniles. There are certainly other horses like Champion mare Atlantic Jewel and Rubick that also indicate there is a lot of diversity within our drafts. 3) It’s obviously a tried and true method

as a group together and certain horses may need things changed a little from time-totime to help them benefit as much as possible, things like time on the walker, paddock time and feeding. 4) How different or unique is what you do with sales horses compared to other farms, would you say? I wouldn’t say a lot different. Each farm would have a very similar preparation program for their own drafts. I would say our biggest asset would be the property itself. It is just an outstanding property to rear young horses. From a selling point of view that is a great advantage for us, people can buy off us with a lot of confidence because of the farm’s tremendous record of producing good horses. 5) How much emphasis do you place on the handling of these young horses and how much do you believe it translates ultimately to their racing performance?

6) How much does the actual environment

period of time as well. But the good ones seem to handle it so well. Horses like Atlantic Jewel, Samaready, Exhilarates, Russian Revolution etc, they all took it in their stride. 7) What are some of the fundamental skills and values that you instil in your yearling preparation staff? Mainly to be patient with them. They are young horses and need to be treated that way. Those staff that remain calm and patient with the horses during those busy days are a great asset to have. 8) Conditioning a yearling is key and can make a huge difference on their price when the hammer falls. What are your thoughts about how a young horse should ideally present to a buyer at this stage of its life? At the end of the day they need to look like an athlete. You can’t have them too big and heavy and you can’t have them too light.

bigger on movement than others, so to have the horses parading well and moving well is something that can make a big difference when the hammer falls. 9) How would you describe your management processes at the actual yearling sales? You want both the horses and staff happy. It translates to the buyers when they are inspecting the draft. We use the ThoroughWorks program to keep all owners aware of who is inspecting and vetting their horses. This is a great advantage as a lot of the time with a draft of 25-odd horses a lot of owners have an involvement. As part of the management team we have a system to keep each other up to speed with who has strong interest in each horse. We keep each other advised of who might be asking about X-rays or price range etc. As certain sale days approach I will use all
