the back of the book he covered last year. He covered some of the best mares in Australia and we’ve liked him from day dot. His stats are good and he’s been producing horses that have not only been competitive in Queensland, but have come down to Sydney and done the same there. “I dare say if Outback Barbie had drawn a gate she would have gone close to winning those Group 1s and everyone would have been talking about him. It’s a bit of a no-brainer for us to send some of our better mares to him. “I also like Press Statement. He was an unbelievable two-year-old and his father was very, very good considering he didn’t cover big books. His stats are unbelievable and he’s produced a lot of quality horses and it looks like he’s going to go on with it. “And I’m also keen on Rubick. If you compare him and Northern Meteor, who are both by the same sire, Rubick’s stats are very much ahead at the same stage and nobody was talking about Northern Meteor at this time in his career. Come the spring, everyone was talking about Northern Meteor so who knows what Rubick will be able to do later in the year.” The four months until spring are a long time in an industry as fast-changing and complex as breeding racehorses, not to mention the often thankless task of trying to predict market trends in three years’ time. However, contemplating the future and

CUDDY reason to strike for
GOLD ON THE COAST
and the overriding outcome is usually far removed from the one envisaged by the creator of said list in the first instance. However, the shopping list afforded to Garry Cuddy – general manager of Spendthrift Australia – is far more straightforward than a complicated mix of tolerance-friendly groceries and absurd bathroom products that were, for good reason, hitherto unknown. His brief is a simple one, but a clear statement of intent nonetheless: buy mares to support exciting new shuttle recruit Bolt d’Oro (Medaglia d’Oro) and use tried and trusted breeding philosophies through which to acquire the most suitable stock. In this scenario, the conjecture of outcrosses – so often a bone of contention for breeders standing descendants hailing from the iconic father and son duo of Danzig (Northern Dancer) and Danehill – is not so much of a problem, but an opportunity. For instance, Cuddy speaks candidly about the southern hemisphere success of Bolt d’Oro’s sire – former Darley shuttler Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado) – highlighting the 20-year-old’s extensive roll of honour when crossed over Danehill-line mares, including Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Vancouver and Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) victor Astern. And while those two names ring loudly across the course of the Australian breeding industry – the former being a Coolmore shuttler who will cover his fourth southern hemisphere book this year, while the latter, a Darley shuttler, will serve his third crop of mares – Bolt d’Oro’s racecourse exploits as a two-year-old eclipsed the achievements realised by either in terms of number of victories at elite level. Trained by Mick Ruis to win a Del Mar maiden special weight first time out, Bolt d’Oro subsequently landed the Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at the same track prior to capturing the Frontrunner Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f) at Santa Anita as part of a four-start two-yearold campaign which culminated in a placed effort in the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile (Gr 1, 8.5f). He ran three times at three, posting his best performance when finishing runner-up to subsequent Triple Crown hero Justify (Scat Daddy) in the Santa Anita Derby (Gr 1, 9f), but Cuddy points to his juvenile prowess coupled with the success of Medaglia d’Oro in Australia as a potent combination for the horse, who is currently standing his first northern hemisphere season for a fee of US$25,000, to establish himself as a true flagbearer for Spendthrift. “Bolt d’Oro is Medaglia d’Oro’s most accomplished twoyear-old son – his only multiple Group 1-winning juvenile colt – and that’s no mean feat given the other horses in that category, namely Vancouver, who have done a job in Australia,” Cuddy says. “He was a fast two-year-old by a shuttle influence who has been an obvious success. He’s also

Danzig blood and we feel that is a great opportunity for breeders to utilise that Medaglia blood over Danehill and Danzig-line mares, breeding on the cross that gave us horses like Vancouver and Astern. A lot of the success Medaglia d’Oro has enjoyed in Australia has been with that broodmare sire-line. “Obviously the horse is unproven, but by breeding to a proven cross we’re giving him every chance of being a success in both hemispheres.” The saturation of Danzig-line blood within the Australian industry naturally creates a broad pool of mates for stallions free of this influence and Cuddy will have no shortage of potential ammunition when he looks to add to Spendthrift’s broodmare band at the upcoming Magic Millions Gold Coast National Broodmare Sale. Among the comprehensive catalogue of 1,071 lots, there are - for example - 41 offerings catalogued by Darley’s illustrious shuttling stalwart Exceed And Excel (Danehill). In addition, Arrowfield Stud’s former flagbearer and perhaps the strongest exponent of Danehill in Australia, the late Redoute’s Choice, has 25 lots catalogued, not to mention multiple offerings by his sireson and current champion Snitzel as well as his rising barnmate and fellow Redoute’s Choice offspring Not A Single Doubt. “We’ve had a great response to the announcement from breeders and really positive feedback from both sales companies, Gold Standard
which is a big plus because they hold the key to the future,” Cuddy continues. “We’re now active in the market shopping for those Danehillline mares to utilise that cross that has been so successful. “The aim for us is to purchase mares to be specifically bred to him and he’ll obviously cover some of the mares that we already have on the farm. I’d be pretty confident to say that 90 per cent of the mares that we purchase at auction this year are going to be bred to him.” Providing further insight into the type of broodmare he will be seeking to purchase, Cuddy says: “I don’t think it will really matter what type of mare you send to Bolt d’Oro because he’s a very well put together horse. We’re obviously going to aim for what most Australians do and look for early two-year-old speed in the mare and throughout the female family as well as pedigrees that have worked with the sire line before. “For example, we recently bought a mare whose half-

Both mares have since produced colt foals, whom Spendthrift will retain to race, while they were subsequently exported to Spendthrift’s Kentucky base as Hughes sought the introduction of Australian blood into his American broodmare band. Here, the fertile link between Australian and American bloodlines is worth referencing, particular as this transnational mingling is becoming increasingly prevalent through the acquisition and transfer of mares in both jurisdictions. Moreover, Spendthrift in a fine example of the opportunities created when Australian and American influences combine, of which Cuddy has extensive experience. “I was a part of the Vin Cox bloodstock team when the American mares really started to take-off in Australia with their progeny and I’ve been actively sourcing mares out of there for the best part of 12 to 14 years,” he says. “It’s something I definitely believe in because you can see the statistics of these horses when crossed over an Americanbred mare – Fastnet Rock being the obvious standout. We’ve done things in reverse and taken a few Fastnet Rock mares out of Australia to breed to our American stallions, namely Malibu Moon and Into Mischief.” In this guise, Bolt d’Oro is perhaps the perfect microcosm of Hughes’ project as a whole: bred in America but expanding into Australia by using a well-founded formula as a platform for future success, one that will no doubt be built on the enduring legacy of Danzig and Danehill felt so comprehensively throughout the Bolt D’Oro
Australian broodmare population.
