Belardo
CHITTY HOPING BELARDO CAN
By Scott Sanbrook
W
idely respected breeder Mark Chitty knows full well the sales ring extremes of jubilation and frustration. But this year it is a sense of anticipation that is overshadowing Chitty as New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Yearling Sales loom. Chitty’s world-renowned Haunui Farm is set to launch the first crop of exciting young shuttle stallion Belardo (Lope De Vega) at the Karaka auction. “Introducing a new stallion to the market is an exciting time and there is a buzz around with Belardo’s first crop going under the hammer,” Chitty says. “There is nervous anticipation to see the way the market reacts and how he competes with other first season sires.” Haunui Farm has celebrated the highest of highs at auctions, extending way back to 1986 when one of its Sir Tristram (Sir Ivor) colts topped the sale at Trentham, realising $750,000. The historic stud also sold the most expensive fillies, both
by Zabeel (Sir Tristram), for $600,000 in 2004 and $800,000 in 2013. And proudly penned on Haunui’s wall of fame graduates is the all-conquering mare Melody Belle (Commands), along with Fix (Iffraaj), Fayreform (Tights), Coogee Walk (Success Express), Surfer’s Paradise (Crested Wave) and The Gentry (McGinty) – all champions in their own right. Despite Haunui’s amazing achievements over a period spanning 60 years, Chitty never takes anything for granted. “When you are selling horses it’s really important not to get caught up in the sales hype,” he says. “Unfortunately, there is always going to be some level of disappointment ... it’s just the way things are. “I always believe that as long as everything balances out in the long run, you have to be happy. “Haunui also sells for a number of clients and from our point of view it’s significant to see them have success. “We want as many clients as possible getting a slice of the pie.” Chitty considers himself extremely lucky to have the opportunity to stand a stallion of the calibre of Belardo, who has been shuttling to Haunui since 2017 at a fee of $12,000.
“Stallions such as Belardo do not come along too often,” he says. “He was a champion two-year-old in Europe and a proper Group 1 horse. “He’s also a correct type with good bone and he puts that into his foals. “And his sireline has been massive and worked so well in Australia.” Belardo is a son of Lope De Vega (Shamardal), whose southern hemisphere progeny include five-time Group 1 winner Santa Ana Lane. Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway) needs no introduction, with 22 Group 1 winners featuring among more than 200 stakes performers in a stellar stud career. Belardo’s maternal side is just as impressive. His dam, Danskaya (Danehill), was Ireland’s champion two-year-old after multiple performances at the highest level. Belardo was a debut winner who went on to be crowned Europe’s champion two-year-old in 2014, courtesy of a breathtaking Continued on page 5>> win in the Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1, 7f).
Karaka Cracker - Chitty hoping Belardo can blossom
<< Continued from page 4 His three-year-old season was highlighted by an effort where his colours were lowered, albeit narrowly, in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Ascot. Belardo trained on at four and achieved arguably his greatest feat with a win in the Lockinge Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) when he overcame a star-studded line-up, including Limato (Tagula), Toormore (Arakan) and Euro Charline (Myboycharlie). Belardo has been given every opportunity to succeed at stud, with 70 per cent of his first two books of mares immediately related to black-type performers. Now it’s time for those youngsters to get the perfect chance to prove themselves on the racetrack, according to Chitty. “You want as many things going your way as possible and you head to the sales hoping to see your yearlings go to the best stables in Australasia,” he says. “They already have a head start if they are with the top trainers.” Belardo will be represented by six superbly bred yearlings in Book 1 at Karaka. Lot 144 is a bay colt from Ohio Girl (O’Reilly) and has Chitty’s tick of approval. Ohio Girl’s only starter, Ohio Showgirl (by Showcasing), won over 800 metres on debut at two this season and she already has a stakes-placing to her credit. “He’s an impressive type of colt and his half-sister is showing a lot of promise,” Chitty says. Another to catch Chitty’s attention is Belardo’s daughter from Push The Boat Out (Henrythenavigator), which will sell as Lot 203. Push The Boat

Out is a half-sister to New Zealand 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Rollout The Carpet (Holy Roman Emperor). “She is a nice, scopey filly with plenty going for her,” Chitty says. “All of his yearlings are running types so they should appeal to buyers.” Belardo stands alongside sleeping giant Iffraaj (Zafonic), who is sure to command his share of the spotlight at Karaka. Iffraaj has sired almost 800 winners worldwide, including 70 individual stakes scorers. Wyndspelle chalked up Iffraaj’s 10th Group 1 success when he claimed the Captain Cook Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham in December. Iffraaj will climb to new heights in 2020 with a staggering 41 lots catalogued in Book 1. It’s been a remarkable revival by Iffraaj considering he had only two yearlings in the elite session in 2017. Iffraaj’s popularity was evident at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale earlier this month when he sired the highest-priced lot of $370,000 in the Book 2 session. “The stallion game is not an easy one - a sire can be forgotten so easily,” Chitty says. “That could have been the case with Iffraaj at one stage. “But he has put his hand up to be recognised by continuing to produce Group 1 performers. “This will be his strongest sale ever on both pedigree and type. “It’s also a sign of breeder recognition...that they have identified the best types of mares to send to him.” Lot 337 will be among the standouts for Iffraaj as the filly’s stakes-winning dam, Talaria (O’Reilly), is a sister to Brutal (O’Reilly), who claimed the Doncaster Handicap (G 1, 1600m) at Randwick last year. Iffraaj has added another string to his bow with the broodmare success of his daughters, with the most notable being Melody Belle’s dam, Meleka Belle. Chitty is understandably excited to be offering a halfbrother to Melody Belle at Karaka. The son of Tavistock (Montjeu) will walk into the ring as Lot 86. “Anyone looking for a Derby style of colt needs to look no further than this one,” Chitty says. Haunui has the luxury of shuttling Belardo and Iffraaj through its strong association with breeding powerhouse Darley. The relationship has blossomed since their first foray together with Marju (Last Tycoon) in the early part of this century. “Being associated STALLIONS SUCH AS BELARDO with Darley enables us to stand truly international DO NOT COME ALONG TOO OFTEN, stallions, giving us a fair HE WAS A CHAMPION TWO-YEAR-OLD IN crack of the whip with EUROPE AND A PROPER GROUP 1 HORSE. horses we could not afford to buy,” Chitty says. HE’S ALSO A CORRECT TYPE WITH GOOD “Breeders continuing BONE AND HE PUTS THAT INTO HIS FOALS to support these stallions AND HIS SIRELINE HAS BEEN MASSIVE is what keeps the success going. AND WORKED SO WELL IN “We find it’s a model AUSTRALIA which works for us.” Haunui was founded
at Whitford, on the eastern side of Auckland, in 1955 by Chitty’s grandparents Geoff and Peg and has gone from strength to strength since relocating to the Karaka district in 2010. “We have a very practical set-up and it’s the right type of country to raise good stock,” Chitty said. “The main farm is 230 acres while we also lease 300 acres to run the operation. “Another bonus is we are only a 10-minute drive from the sales complex.” Now 53 years of age, Chitty has further entrenched himself in the industry by becoming chairman of the Counties Race Club. “I was a little reluctant to get into the racing side of things when I had a young family, but the time has come to put my hand up and become more involved,” he says. “Racing is certainly facing challenges and some things need to change, so we will help that along if we can. “The gambling side has changed immeasurably ... you can even see that in Australia with the corporate bookmakers. “We need to be able to capitalise in that area. “And being an entertainment industry, we must make the most of what we can from non-racing revenue. “A club might race 20 times a year, but what does it do on the other 340-plus days on the calendar? “Racecourses are big assets and they should be utilised to their full potential.” Chitty’s progressive thinking has extended to an investment in a colts syndicate with Cambridge trainer Tony Pike. The syndicate hit the ground running with Not An Option (Not A Single Doubt) winning his first two starts before finishing runner-up in a $100,000 race at Ellerslie on January 1. “We are not hell bent on buying colts with the purpose to stand them at stud,” Chitty adds. “But if we do end up with a good stallion it will be a major bonus.” Chitty’s Midas touch is expected to be felt when Haunui offers 26 lots in Book 1 at Karaka.

S
canning the results of successful weanling-toyearling pinhooks reveals some occasional excellent returns, but if anyone thinks the process is easy, think again because it takes experience, specialised knowledge and superb foresight to achieve such results. Away from the spotlight, two consignors in particular have turned this practice into a science and have built quite a following due to their knowhow, reputation and, ultimately, results. In an attempt to discover their formula, ANZ Bloodstock News recently visited Denny and Mark Baker of Hallmark Stud and Dave Duley of Lansdowne Park. One farm is well established, the other is newer, yet they have much in common. It’s not magic, or even good luck, behind why both enjoy such success. The difference between the two operations is that the former has a wealth of knowledge and experience whereas the latter is acquiring both very rapidly and is making major inroads in their niche market.
HALLMARK STUD
H
istory leads to experience, experience leads to knowledge and Denny and Mark Baker can call on plenty of all three, which is the basis for their very successful operation at Te Kauwhata, about 40 kilometres south of Karaka. Their Hallmark Stud was originally Kinross Stud, established during the 1950s by a grand master of stud operations, John Malcolm, who, along with his brother Jim, also established Te Rapa Stud. Kinross’ first stallion was the great Summertime (Precipitation), three-time New Zealand champion sire and four times Dewar Stallion Trophy winner (Australian and New Zealand figures combined). Denny was first employed at Kinross towards the end of Summertime’s reign and would be the first to acknowledge how fortunate he was to have been given the opportunity to learn under John Malcom’s tutelage. He learned very well, became Malcolm’s right hand man and these days is enormously respected in the industry. Prominent bloodstock agent Robert Dawe can attest to that respect. Robert has an uncanny record of finding good horses and is the first to admit that Denny Baker is one of his mentors and mostly responsible for his own fund of developed knowledge, especially regarding conformation. “While scouting stud farms for stallion advertising (prior to becoming a bloodstock agent) I was a good listening apprentice, learning from Denny as well as Norm Hawthorne, Peter Keating, Nelson Schick and Fred Archer,” Dawe says. “Denny’s advice was a version of an old Abraham Lincoln adage – ‘‘Tis better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt’.” A second major influence in Denny’s thoroughbred life was V F (Fred) Dawson, who bred and leased out the great mare, Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) Continued on page 8>> winner Light Fingers (Le Filou).

<< Continued from page 7 “Fred was the best horseman I ever knew. His knowledge of conformation was second to none and he knew his pedigrees inside out,” says Denny. “One thing he shared with me is that a good horseman has no problem with any horse. A good horseman will figure it out, one way or another.” That knowledge and experience has been passed to son Mark, who not only had the benefit of Denny’s hand but also spent time with the legendary Vincent O’Brien during his overseas experience. Another major influence and mentor is renowned bloodstock agent and longtime friend, Sydney based Merrick Staunton. Together, Denny and Mark have forged a very successful operation without making a lot of noise, yet they have achieved some outstanding results. A case in point is a thoroughbred family nurtured by Hallmark from the mare Estella Dawn, a Hasty Cloud (Preciptic) sister to Whyte Handicap (Listed, 1600m) winner Rising Damp. Her family had gone quiet, performance wise, yet Denny knew the family well as her grandam Iceo (Orelio) was a half-sister to the grandam of the champion Sir Dane (Summertime), whose 15 wins (and 12 Group placings) included the 1964 Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040), making it back-toback wins for Summertime as Summer Regent took out the weight-for-age contest the previous year. Mated with his then resident sire Bletchencore (Bletchingly), Estella Dawn produced Miss Distinction who, although only a maiden winner, had plenty of ability, according to Denny. This is where the experience is evident. Denny rides (as does Mark) and knew that Miss Distinction could run and was well worth persevering with. Despite the introduction of somewhat non-commercial sires to her broodmare career, Denny and Mark bred the brilliant sprinter and dual Group 1 winner Gee I Jane (Jahafil). Prior to Gee I Jane, Miss Distinction produced Group 3 winner Miss Jessie Jay (Spectacularphantom), who in turn foaled two Group 1 winners. In partnership with Trevor Hurley, they bred dual Classicwinning filly Katie Lee (Pins) plus Diamond Stakes (Gr 1,

1200m) winner Banchee (Oratorio). Consequently, Miss Jessie Jay locked up the New Zealand broodmare of the year title in 2009-10. Denny adds: “With older horses, if we get the chance to put a saddle on them, we will do that. You can learn so much from riding them. That sort of information and feedback is key.” As to any possible formula regarding pinhooking, both Mark and Denny agree that if one of them likes an individual there is every likelihood that the other will too. Mark takes up the story by saying: “In New Zealand we do consult with each other, of course. When I go to Australia all the decisions are on me, but our aim is to choose weanlings that are less likely to fail. “You can’t always get it right and we don’t profess to know all the answers, but we are happy to back our judgement.” Hallmark’s Book 1 draft at Karaka includes 24 yearlings, 16 of which were sired in Australia. They feature proven stallions Teofilo (Galileo), Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock), Dundeel (High Chaparral), Choisir (Danehill Dancer), Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s Choice) and Artie Schiller (El Prado). Lot 606, a filly by Teofilo, is the subject of a serious pedigree update being a half-sister to emerging star Scorpz (Charm Spirit), recent winner of back-to-back stakes and current favourite for next month’s New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m). Of the younger brigade of sires, they will also offer a colt and a filly by the exciting Rubick (Encosta De Lago), whose first crop are just three-year-olds, including this season’s Everest (1200m) winner Yes Yes Yes. Choisir is the sire of Lot 505, a colt out of Choux Diva (Thorn Park), a Melbourne-winning sister to the tough Jimmy Choux, whose 12 wins included five at Group 1 level. Choux Diva is also a half-sister to New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Miss Wilson (Stratum).
WITH OLDER HORSES, IF WE GET THE CHANCE TO PUT A SADDLE ON THEM, WE WILL DO THAT. YOU CAN LEARN SO MUCH FROM RIDING THEM. THAT SORT OF INFORMATION AND FEEDBACK IS KEY - DENNY BAKER Their final lot of Book 1 is a colt by first season sire Capitalist (Written Tycoon), winner of the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m), from a half-sister to dual-Group 1 winner Atomic Force (Danehill Dancer). Mark is very enthusiastic about Lot 40 by Tivaci (High Chaparral). He says: “I have seen a number of Tivacis and he has really stamped them. Great girths and great bone, all of them. Our colt is the first living foal out of Lady Royale (Captain Rio) and is a cracking colt. His dam won the Matamata Breeders’ Stakes.” ‘Learn from the past’ is a well-tested saying and in Mark and Denny Baker they have been able to capitalise on well-founded principles. Hallmark started from humble beginnings, but with the benefit of proven, sound practices and methods, has become a highly respected farm. The activity around their Barn D at Karaka is proof.

LANDSDOWNE PARK
I
n another life he is famous for having run down the Fijian Flyer (also known as the Bua Bullet), Rupeni Caucaunibuca, one of the then fastest men in rugby which, for a lock versus a winger, was no mean feat. These days he is chasing and catching thoroughbreds at his Ohaupo (near Cambridge) facility named, appropriately enough, Lansdowne Park, after the rugby stadium in Dublin, Ireland. We visited a very modest Dave Duley recently, attempting to discover how and why he has quietly and efficiently developed such a successful business, prepping for sales and racehorse spelling. His clients read like a ‘who’s who’ of racing, but his modesty is such that he prefers not to name drop. “Let’s just say that some very well-known racing people are very supportive,” Duley says. His is the definition of a quiet operation. “It’s a never-ending learning process and if there is a formula it is more to do with keeping your eyes and ears open and surrounding yourself with people who know what they are doing,” he continues. “The best example is my partner, Jude. Being a vet, having her eyes and ears to add to our buying decisions is a bonus. Stable head Kirstie Brodie is another. Kirstie has 30 years’ experience and is key to the operation.” Dave concedes that timing can also play a big part. His purchase of a Zoustar (Northern Meteor) filly before his first crop hit the track, which the farm sold at the Book 1 session of this sale for $650,000 in 2018, was certainly well timed. The spring and early summer of the 2017-18 racing season saw Zoustar’s fortunes explode when the flying Sunlight scored the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) just days prior to the Karaka Yearling Sale. “I simply pay attention to what the good judges do, and we weren’t the only Kiwis in Melbourne for the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale keen to buy the filly,” Duley continues.
“Right after the docket signing there were numerous approaches to buy in. We were pretty determined to buy her, though. “She was number one on our shortlist and from the moment we got her home she really developed and built muscle leading up to Karaka. She absolutely blossomed in our great horse growing conditions.” “We’d had some decent pinhooking successes, but this result was definitely out of proportion. At the same time, it underlined that our way of doing things is on track. “As good as that result was, we get just as much satisfaction from helping our clients reach their goals and that our buyers get value, too.” That investment was by far the largest in his facility’s history. The filly herself has excellent residual value being by one of Australia’s boom sires, out of a Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mare who is, in turn, a daughter of Success Express (Hold Your Peace). Dual Group 1 winner Savabeel (Zabeel) is bred on the same Zabeel-Success Express cross. “She won her maiden very well and has earned black-type, so the buyer now has a beautifully-bred future broodmare,” Duley says. “For 2020, we have 12 in Book 1 and eight in Book 2. That’s a comfortable number for us. I don’t like to cut corners and each yearling deserves individual attention. “I am fortunate to have excellent and experienced staff too.” Lansdowne Park will offer a sister to New Zealand filly of the year Dijon Bleu (Burgundy) and Duley says of her: “She is a clone of Dijon Bleu. “We also found another very nice filly, by Hinchinbrook (Fastnet Rock), at the Inglis Great Southern Weanling Sale. We like to do a couple of pinhooks each year.
ANZ Bloodstock News 2020 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale Supplement
Dave Duley
“Another in our draft is a Vancouver filly who was bred by our good clients Tom and Jenny Hobson - they bought the filly’s dam in foal. The filly was foaled in New Zealand. She looks a strong, early type with plenty of scope.” Duley continues: “I really like the look of the Tivaci stock. I have three of them and they are all strong types with great bone. I will be surprised if they don’t sell very well. “I thrive at the sales. It is very exciting and we can’t wait to get there and take in the atmosphere. It truly is a buzz.” Get a good partner (a vet works well), then watch and listen to what the good judges do. Put all those pieces together then back your own judgement. It’s a formula that Dave Duley and his quiet operation have found to be rather successful. Two quite different operations, one well established with an excellent track record and the other making strides towards becoming a major player. Both operations go about their business somewhat under the radar yet share a common link of proven practices, knowledge and experience.
IT’S A NEVER ENDING LEARNING PROCESS AND IF THERE IS A FORMULA IT IS MORE TO DO WITH KEEPING YOUR EYES AND EARS OPEN AND SURROUNDING YOURSELF WITH PEOPLE WHO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING - DAVE DULEY

He was retired by Weir and his owners almost 12 months ago after finishing well back in last year’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m). An emotional Rawiller, the long-time rider of Black Heart Bart, was delighted to see the gelding return to Group 1 winning form. It also capped Rawiller’s own comeback from a broken neck which almost ended his career, having been kept on the sidelines for nearly six months after being seriously injured last October. "I've won a Golden Slipper and a Caulfield Cup and I never looked like getting teary, and I'm nearly in tears," he said.

Karaka Cracker - Ellis backing Karaka to deliver value once again
By Chris Humpleby
L
ies, damn lies, and statistics’ is the maxim used to beat the numbercrunchers, and even a cursory racing fan can appreciate the pitfalls of trying to reduce such a complicated sport into a purely quantitative means of understanding. However, the figures often tell an important tale and in the case of Te Akau Racing principal David Ellis and his association with the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale, the numbers simply do not lie. Ellis has been a permanent fixture at this auction for 37 years, both at Trentham – the sale’s former home – and now at Karaka, where he has purchased yearlings every January since 1988. Time is the test of any long-term relationship and this one continues to blossom almost four decades down the line as Ellis shows an insatiable appetite for sourcing top-class racing prospects. Indeed, he left the corresponding sale in 2019 as comfortably the top buyer, securing 42 lots at an aggregate of $7,955,000 and an average of $189,405. “Karaka is my favourite sale because we’ve had so much success and luck buying out of there,” Ellis tells me during a brief pitstop at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. If Ellis’ affinity with Karaka is unsurprising, how does the auction compare now to those very early days? “I don’t think it’s changed a lot, although it certainly had a big impact when Sir Peter Vela’s family bought New Zealand Bloodstock – they’ve really taken the company to another level. “It’s easily the best-run sales company that I’ve been to in the world. The facilities are fantastic, there is plenty of room to look at the horses and both New Zealand Bloodstock and the breeders provide unbelievable hospitality. “Buyers all around the world like going to Karaka because they’re made to feel so welcome.” Hospitality is a trait Ellis espouses well himself and he’s generous with both his time and his thoughts during a hectic yearling sale whereby the interruption of a journalist must be as highly desirable as returning underbidder on your prized lot. Ellis is also focussed and precise – he chooses his words carefully, while there is something wonderfully reassuring about being asked to call an interviewee at exactly 8.05am. Don’t be overawed by the figures, though. Ellis isn’t deliberately seeking yearon-year growth or a chest-beating ego trip each time he sets foot in the ring. “The competition is about who buys the best horses, not the most, and we like to do our homework and try to get the good ones,” he says. “We don’t even think about past years – it has absolutely no bearing on what we do. Last year, we wanted to buy a few more than normal to make sure Jamie Richards had a really good start to his career. “We won’t buy as many this year, but we’ll certainly be buying, mainly because we’ve seen so many nice yearlings. We just

try to go and buy some good horses that can win at Group 1 level for our owners.” Top-tier successes have been a regular feature for Te Akau members in recent times as Richards, who began operating with a sole license in July 2018 having formerly trained in partnership with Stephen Autridge from May 2015, has shown a deftness and expertise far beyond his fledgling status. Indeed, both his career trajectory and Te Akau’s status as a leading global syndicator have been headlined by the extraordinary exploits of Melody Belle (Commands). Purchased by Ellis at this sale in 2016, realising $57,500 from the draft of Haunui Farm, Melody Belle has now won 15 of her 26 starts for prize-money of A$2,864,888. Racing under the banner of the Fortuna Melody Belle Syndicate in partnership with John Galvin’s Fortuna Syndicates, the fiveyear-old has assumed darling status in Australasia, winning ten Group 1 contests, including the Empire Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington in November. For Ellis, the daughter of Commands (Danehill) was a standout from the very beginning. He says: “After I inspected the yearlings at Haunui Farm that year, I rang Jamie Richards and said, ‘I’ve found one’. “I loved her pedigree – she was the first foal out of an Iffraaj mare, and she had lovely big ears. She was a beautifully balanced filly, she had plenty of natural strength and was just the sort of horse that I try and buy. I thought she’d make double her price.” While it would be hard to foresee a career that includes back-to-back successes in the Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1, 1400m) and a remarkable seven top-flight victories in 2019 alone, Richards was similarly enthused from an early stage. “Jamie rang me after she had her first gallop and said, ‘I think you’re right about the Commands filly’”, Ellis continues. “Right from a two-year-old, she’s been a great flagbearer for John Galvin’s Fortuna Syndicate and for Te Akau Racing.” Melody Belle now has her sights firmly set on the second running of the A$5 million All-Star Mile (1600m), with Ellis suggesting a Melbourne lead-up campaign for the $8 co-second favourite prior to her main assignment at Caulfield on March 14. Participation in the All-Star Mile is, of course, based on a public vote, but Ellis adds jokingly: “If a horse wins ten Group 1s, seven in the last calendar year, and doesn’t get in it’s going to be a pretty strong field, isn’t it?” Melody Belle’s all-conquering achievements are not a misnomer, but simply the crowning glory for an operation that continues to churn out high-class results from Karaka purchases. For instance, the crop who passed through the ring in 2017 have proved a special bunch, with Ellis buying Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Avantage (Fastnet Rock) for $210,000, her Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) conqueror Sword Of Osman (Savabeel) for $165,000 and agonising New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) runner-up In A Twinkling (Fastnet Rock) for $250,000. A precocious two-year-old, Avantage won her first four outings, including the Karaka 2YO Million (RL, 1200m) 12 months

ANZ Bloodstock News 2020 NZB Karaka Yearling Sale Supplement
after Melody Belle burst onto the scene with victory in the same contest. Te Akau completed a hat-trick in the $1 million prize when subsequent Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) runner-up Probabeel (Savabeel) led home a trifecta for the outfit in 2019, getting the better of stable companions Aotea Lad (Savabeel) and Yourdeel (Dundeel) to provide a momentous result for Ellis and Richards. The outcome of this year’s Karaka Million will already have been decided when this feature goes public, but Te Akau could easily have secured a four-timer with the ‘very exciting’ Cool Aza Beel (Savabeel) should Richards have squeezed him into the final line-up. While Ellis acknowledges the riches up for grabs on Karaka Millions night shape his approach to this sale, so too does a more long-term outlook. “We have three million-dollar races in New Zealand – the two- and three-year-old contests at Karaka and the Derby – so if you don’t think the horse is going to fit one of those three categories, you’re probably best to race them somewhere else,” Ellis says. “We try and buy horses that can race in the autumn as two-year-old, but they have to be able to train on as three and four-yearolds. “I think Melody Belle is a good example of the horse we’re trying to buy. She won the Karaka Million, came back as a three-yearold and won on Karaka Million night, while she’s also won our triple crown and will have her best campaign this autumn as a fiveyear-old.” Ellis continues: “We like to give the yearlings a chance to race at two, but we don’t put any pressure on them to do it. If they want to do it and they’re fit and healthy, we give them the opportunity, but we’re more than happy to give them time. “We’ve got a lot of very nice two-yearolds from last year that have been educated and have trialled up nicely. They’ll be racing in the next month with the autumn Group 1s as a goal.” Included in that crop is last year’s stunning sales topper No Limits, a son of Savabeel (Zabeel) who realised $1.4 million from Waikato Stud. He became the first seven-figure youngster to be offered by the Matamata-based operation as well claiming the mantle of the highest-priced Savabeel yearling to be sold at Karaka. Ellis had to dig very deep to bring the colt home, but he remains buoyed by his

THE COMPETITION IS ABOUT WHO BUYS THE BEST HORSES, NOT THE MOST, AND WE LIKE TO DO OUR HOMEWORK AND TRY TO GET THE GOOD ONES purchase as the exciting juvenile closes in on his debut. “Somebody who went to the sale for the first time could pick him out as being a superstar in the making,” Ellis says. “He was an absolutely magnificent individual and it was very exciting when we were able to buy him.” Commenting on his future, Ellis adds: “He is a very good horse. Opie Bosson, my stable jockey, thinks he’s a certain Group 1 horse. “He trialled up like a superstar and he’s just been given more time to grow and develop. Come March or April you’ll see him racing in Australia. We think he’s the real deal, no doubt about it.” Ellis is predicting much of the same in the respect of quality at this year’s auction, highlighting the sale’s robust reputation and a kind meteorological year as two key variables. “I think the international buyers will be blown away with the quality of yearling at Karaka this year,” Ellis says. “It’s pretty well known we’ve had a fantastic grass-growing season in New Zealand in the last twelve months, we had a very mild winter, and I think that reflects in the development of the yearlings that I’ve seen for this sale – they are probably the best-grown individuals I’ve seen here.” While finding the next Melody Belle might prove a near-impossible task, Ellis continues: “I think it will be a good sale. “It’s still pretty good buying in New Zealand, while there are so many 1600 to 2400-metre races in Australia now for unbelievable stakes money and it’s a proven fact that so many of them are won by New Zealand-bred horses that come out of Karaka. “The sale creates fantastic value and what you see is what you get. A lot of very good horses will come out of the sale this year.”

TARZINO
lthough the industry tragically lost Tavistock (Montjeu) recently, his name will live on and what better representative than Tarzino to be landed that responsibility. Tarzino’s superb 3YO season saw him named Champion 3YO Australian Colt of his year and what a season it was. In the spring he won the Victoria Derby (Gr.1, 2500m), returned to Flemington in the autumn to run second in the Australian Guineas (Gr.1, 1600m) then beat future Hong Kong star Beauty Generation (Road To Rock) in the Rosehill Guineas (Gr.1, 2000m). At his final start at three he ran fourth in the Australian Derby (Gr.1, 2400m) behind his paternal half brother Tavago (Tavistock).

TURN ME LOOSE
ourage was the hallmark of Turn Me Loose (Iffraaj). He took his Champion New Zealand 3YO status, from a brilliant victory in the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas (Gr.1, 1600m), to the cauldron of Melbourne racing at four. There, he showed the Australians just how tough he was taking out the Emirates Stakes (Gr.1, 1600m) at Flemington in the spring then to Caulfield in the autumn where he held out stars Stratum Star (Stratum) and Suavito (Thorn Park) in the Futurity Stakes (Gr.1, 1400m). At his only start at five he finished scond to Black Heart Bart (Blackfriars) in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m), also at Caulfield.

VADAMOS (FR)
nlike the three Monsun (Konigsstuhl) Melbourne Cup (Gr.1, 3200m) winners Almandin, Fiorente and Protectionist, Vadamos was a very fast son of Monsun. His preferred distance was 1600m and “his final 200m in the Prix du Moulin (Chantilly) of 10.47 secs is absolutely top class,” according to his legendary trainer Andre Fabre. That victory at five plus the Group 2 Prix du Muguet (1600m) at Saint-Cloud were two of his eight career wins (five stakes) and in Australia he finished fourth in the 2016 WS Cox Plate (Gr.1, 2040m) behind Winx (Street Cry) followed up by another fourth in the Emirates Stakes (Gr.1, 2000m).
