Graduating

from

the

University of Dublin with a Bachelor of Business and Legal Studies, it was during his tertiary education that he first officially worked with Coolmore’s marketing maestro Richard Henry. He also spent his summer holidays under the tutelage of trainer John Oxx and a stint working at Hollywood Park in the US under Hall Of Fame trainer Neil Drysdale. At the time of arriving in Australia in August 2008, after a further stint in Ireland under Henry, Hutch found himself surrounded by experienced and respected industry professionals such as Peter O’Brien, Colm Santry and Michael Kirwan. He would take the office soon-to-be vacated by the young ambitious James Harron while also working alongside Darley Flying Start graduate Henry Field. Hutch credits not only Harron and Field but a host of other respected names associated with Coolmore in the early years of his move to Australia to being integral in his development. “During that time I was able to inspect stock with people like Peter O’Brien, Demi O’Byrne, Harry King and they are all regarded as outstanding judges of horseflesh, so it was a wonderful environment to learn and further develop a skill set,” he recalls. Harron, of course, is now one of the highest-profile and successful bloodstock agents in Australia and Field the founder of Newgate Farm, which has quickly become one of the largest stud operations in the Hunter Valley. Hutch, too, has that infectious enthusiasm, incredible knowledge and drive to succeed, no doubt traits Inglis managing director Mark Webster wanted to tap into when approaching the then Coolmore employee about switching camps and joining the auction house. Hutch says curiosity led him to considering the new role after it was first floated by him. “Having had an initial discussion with Mark, I found the

possibilities quite fascinating and through further discussions

myself and make a positive contribution in an environment where the company continues to progress,” he said. During his more than ten years in Australia he has become enamoured with the Australian racing industry and thoughts of returning to Europe to continue his career have never really entered his reckoning.

Some suggest Hutch could eventually succeed Webster in the top job at Inglis, but the man himself would not be drawn on such speculation except to say, in his typical dry wit, that “I haven’t even worked through my probationary period yet.” Whether that ever comes to fruition or not, Hutch is firmly focused on his new role at Inglis, starting with February’s

Coolmore team for the part they have played in his development. “Tom and the Magnier family were very good to me during my time at Coolmore,” he said. “I was given some great opportunities and I really enjoyed it as an environment to work. I worked with some great people and with some elite stallions. Similarly, through the sales side of the season, we bred and sold a lot of good horses during the time I was there.” With the depth of knowledge, passion and willingness to work, there is little doubt that Hutch will not only leave his mark on Inglis but also the wider thoroughbred industry and the Classic sale is just the start.

“There’s

obviously a lot to like about him but one thing I particularly like is the way those broodmare sires stack up. Redoute’s Choice is a very good broodmare sire followed by More Than Ready and Canny Lad. He’ll be well sought after. “He doesn’t look like a first foal. You wouldn’t have thought a Redoute’s mare would leave a horse this big and hopefully he puts it all together. They’re trying to get the mare off to a really good start and they’ve picked a very successful sire. “We have a lot of proven sires in the draft which is one thing we are particularly pleased with. We’ll be one of the deepest drafts, sire wise, across the horses that we are taking.” To complement that group of proven stallions, Lime Country also has representation from a number of up and coming sires, including the likes of Lot 350, by Deep Field, and Lot 548, a colt by Arrowfield Stud shuttler Olympic Glory (Choisir) whom Griffin feels is ‘a flashy, muscly, ready-made Hong Kong horse’. Foxwedge (Fastnet Rock), who will relocate to Woodside Park in Victoria, is another stallion represented in Lime Country’s draft, and Griffin feels that the colt, out of the wellrelated unraced mare Gogoreilly (O’Reilly), is the quintessential Inglis Classic type. “We are particularly fond of this one,” she said. “We broke the dam in New Zealand for a client who still owns the mare, and at the time she was the most expensive O’Reilly filly ever sold at sale, so it’s nice having her here at the farm. “Obviously the first foal is now a winner and I think this one is a real trainer’s horse. A trainer would look at him and go, ‘yep, that’s a rock solid unit and I can get on with getting him going’ as they like to over here. He just looks like a very sound horse. “We feel this is a trainers sale. It is a place they can come, buy horses for the stable who are good, sound individuals. “You can’t fill your stable with those million dollar horses and you can come to Classic and get a lot of very good quality horses, that trainers

It is a two-year-old family by a horse who was a two-year-old himself, so she is the perfect filly to be putting into that Gold Riband section. “They’ve designed it to attract those forward type of horses. Two of the fillies, those out of Alverta (Flying Spur)

and Charming Estelle (Redoute’s Choice), were sold at last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, where the former fetched $1.1m from Waller Racing and Guy Mulcaster, and the latter brought $1m from Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa al Maktoum. The connection between the Yoshida family’s Shadai Stallion Station and Arrowfield has led to the dual Group 1-winning sprinter-milers Real Impact and Mikki Isle becoming the first sons of Deep Impact to stand in Australia, with the pair having shuttled to Arrowfield since 2016 and 2017 respectively. Mikki Isle’s debut foals are on the ground, and with sale season in full swing, the Australian market is getting its first look at the initial crop of yearlings by Real Impact. There were some positive early signs at Magic Millions’ flagship sale, where Triple Crown Syndications and Moody Racing signed for fillies by Real Impact at $240,000 and $200,000 respectively, prices that represent eye-catching returns on a covering fee of just $19,250. Given the tidal wave of success behind their sire line, it will be fascinating to see how the 21 lots by the dual Group 1 winner Real Impact fare at the upcoming Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. A quick skim through Real Impact’s Classic Sale entries confirms his immense outcross appeal, as he has covered mares by the likes of Fastnet Rock (Danehill), Flying Spur (Danehill) and the mighty Redoute’s Choice. Among the standout offerings on paper are: Torryburn Stud’s Lot 14, a half-brother to Group 2-placed She Knows (Denman) out of a three-parts sister to the dam of Hong Kong Group 1 winner Contentment (Hussonet); Lot 421 from Newhaven Park, a colt whose second dam is a half-sister to Group 1-winning mare Typhoon Tracy (Red Ransom); Lot 441, a filly from the family of Gunnison (Not A Single Doubt) and Lucky Bubbles (Sebring) offered by Arrowfield; and Lot 479, a colt out of a sister to dual Group 1 winner Sudurka (Perugino), offered by Monarch Stud. Given his dominance over the last decade, and not to mention that he now has the backing of some of the biggest names in the world of bloodstock, it seems almost inevitable that Deep Impact’s influence will deepen through his growing roster of sire sons. With Real Impact and Mikki Isle waiting in the wings, Australia can be the starting point

Contributer (High Chaparral) won eight of his 18 starts and amassed $1,175,039 in career prizemoney across two continents.

Initially bought out of the Arqana Deauville October Yearling

Sale in 2011 for €60,000, his value more than doubled as a twoyear-old when fetching 130,000 guineas at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale in April 2012. He went into training with Newmarket-based Ed Dunlop and, having finished sixth on debut, he broke his maiden at the second attempt at Wolverhampton in November 2012. On his return as a three-year-old he won impressively at Newbury before gaining black type when running second to subsequent Irish 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) and Breeders’ Cup Turf (Gr 1, 12f) winner Magician (Galileo) in the Dee Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2.5f) at Chester. He ran second in the Cocked Hat Stakes (Listed, 1m3f) and fourth in the King Edward VII Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) thereafter, but his peak efforts in the United Kingdom came a year later, when he won the Magnolia Stakes (Listed, 1m2f) on his reappearance before taking out the Wolferton Handicap (Listed, 1m2f) at Royal Ascot. A move to Australia and the John O’Shea stable followed soon after and his switch to the Southern Hemisphere got off to the perfect start when he took out the David Jones Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) at Caulfield in October 2014. Contributer was beaten just over three lengths in the Emirates Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) next up before running away

January 2015 with a close up fourth in the Expressway Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Rosehill where he was running on strongly at the finish. His last racecourse outing came in February 2015, where he again turned in an admirable performance to come home a close seventh in the Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), but, following an injury sustained in that contest, his racing career was cut short. In the wake of his retirement, Messara told ANZ Bloodstock News: “Panzer Division is as close to the perfect thoroughbred horse on conformation and presence, he’s a stunning individual.” One of five foals to race out of the dual Chilean Group 1 winner Desert Flight (Hussonet), who is a sister to the stakesplaced Gran Zulu and a half-sister to the stakes winner Kasbana (Romiano), Panzer Division is a sibling to three winners including his Roses Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) winning brother Kebede. His second dam, the stakes-placed Mozinha (Mocito Feliz), is a half sister to the dam of Chilean Group 1-winner and Champion 2YO Colt Axel Von Georgy (Romiano), and she has produced eight winners from nine foals to race.

Great horses start with good land and at Coolmore Australia we take great care of both. That’s why, since 1996, a total of 56 individual Gr.1 winners have started out from here.

Winx, the Longines World’s Best Racehorse of 2018, was one of our 7 Gr.1 winning graduates last year.
