BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL ROYAL ASCOT REVIEW DALHAM HALL Stud maestro Dubawi demonstrated why he is the leading sire in Europe, maybe even the world, by recording an outstanding five individual winners at Royal Ascot this year. The 20-year-old son of Dubai Millennium’s tally at the meeting was headed by two homebred entires who struck in Group 1 contests for Charlie Appleby, and in all likelihood secured themselves a place on the Darley stallion roster in the future. Coroebus, a triumph of Darley breeding being out of First Victory, a Group 3-winning Teofilo half-sister to five other stakes winners in Always Smile, Eastern World, Ihtimal, Thunder Snow and Winter Lightning, backed up his 2,000 Guineas victory with a brave success in a messy running of the St James’s Palace Stakes, while Naval Crown, out of Maisons-Laffitte Listed winner Come Alive, beat Creative Force, another son of Dubawi trained at Moulton Paddocks, into second in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes. Dubawi was also represented last week by Eldar Eldarov, a member of Kirsten Rausing’s awesome Alouette family who remained unbeaten in three starts for Roger Varian with his narrow victory in the Queen’s Vase; Dubai Future, a Godolphin homebred out of Gulfstream Park Grade 3 winner Anjaz who took the Wolferton Stakes by three lengths for Saeed bin Suroor; and Secret State, a son of 1,000 Guineas first-past-thepost Jacqueline Quest who struck in the King George V Handicap for Appleby. Royal Ascot 2022 summed up perfectly one of Dubawi’s greatest strengths: his incredible versatility. His winners came at all points of the distance spectrum, from six furlongs for Naval Crown to 14 furlongs for Eldar Eldarov, and they scored after racing prominently, as was the case for Dubai Future and Secret

State, and with late finishing bursts, as Coroebus and Eldar Eldarov did. This year’s royal meeting also showed how Dubawi is becoming an increasingly influential sire of sires, thanks in large part to his son New Bay shining with his first two crops now aged three and four. The Ballylinch Stud-based Prix du Jockey Club hero notched two winners, both trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam – Saffron Beach, who stormed

The talking points and statistics that made up Royal Ascot 2022

I

T WAS good to have Royal Ascot back in all its finery this year after two Covid-impacted years. Fair play to ITV Racing for showing all 35 races live in what amounts to the biggest commitment to one meeting there has ever been. It was also great to hear all 14 races at the Breeders’ Cup will be live as well in November. There were certainly a few notable homebred triumphs last week, Kyprios, Inspiral, Baaeed, Coroebus and Thesis among them from the bigger operations, while Dramatised, Candleford, The Ridler and Heredia were super strikes for the smaller guys. The sires who hit the board with winners were a pleasingly eclectic group too. Yes, Dubawi, Galileo and Kingman were among those who scored more than once, but so too, among others, were Dark Angel,

New Bay and Starspangledbanner. Over the pages that follow, Martin Stevens and James Thomas tell the stories of Royal Ascot 2022, while we also provide statistics on the breeders and sires who got among the generous prize-money and a results summary of the first three home in each stakes race. Aforementioned The Ridler’s win in the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes was one of the biggest talking points as he hung badly left and hampered rivals in the final furlong. Connections of the second and third in particular were unhappy, while winning jockey Paul Hanagan received a ten-day ban for careless riding. There’s no need to rake over it all again, but one observation is that while diversity is among the biggest buzzwords in society generally, and definitely within racing, there are several examples, including

interference rules, of the sport appearing hellbent on homogeneity. There was never anything wrong with each jurisdiction governing racing how they saw fit. But oh no, the system here should be adopted everywhere because this is Britain, we’re bound to have more sensible rules than Johnny Foreigner. Well, not for the first time, the procedures and principles followed here were shown to be highly questionable relative to how the US and Canada still operate. The topic will certainly be on plenty of racing officials’ minds, as will the decision to go down one particular avenue. I’d give a penny for France Galop’s thoughts . . . Variety is one of Flat racing’s biggest appeals on a global level. Let’s not lose too much of it.

to a wide-margin success in the Duke of Cambridge Stakes, and Claymore, who showed admirable grit to make most of the running and then fight off the late challenge of Reach For The Moon in the Hampton Court Stakes. New Bay is also the sire of rapidly progressive middledistance performer Bay Bridge, a fast-finishing second to State Of Rest in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, and two big-field handicap thirds – Jimi Hendrix in the Britannia and Jumby in the Wokingham. He appears to share some of his sire’s most appealing traits, in that his offspring are versatile, classy and tremendously genuine. When they don’t win, they often go down all guns blazing. New Bay’s close relation Kingman – both Juddmontebred Classic winners are maternal great-grandsons of the operation’s matriarch Bahamian – supplied three individual winners at Ascot last week. Noble Truth, out of an unraced Frankel half-sister to the great racemare Stacelita, made just about all to win the Jersey Stakes for Godolphin, while Candleford, a halfbrother to former royal meeting winner Atty Persse owned and bred by Barnane Stud, streaked to a six-length victory in the Duke of Edinburgh Handicap for William Haggas, and Thesis, a half-brother to Fillies’ Mile heroine Quadrilateral, rattled home to win the Britannia for owner-breeder Juddmonte and Harry and Roger Charlton. Crenelle and Tempus, two more Juddmonte-breds by Banstead Manor Stud-based Kingman and both out of Dansili mares, ran third in the Sandringham and Royal Hunt Cup, while Kingmax, bred by Sunderland Holding out of Prix de Pomone scorer Baino Hope, took third in the Hampton Court Stakes. Kingman’s sire Invincible Spirit confirmed himself an important influence by siring narrowly beaten Britannia runner-up Saga and another of his stallion sons, Mayson, being represented by back-toback Wokingham winner Rohaan. Invincible Spirit, still active at the Irish National Stud at 25, also featured as damsire of King’s Stand Stakes runner-up Twilight Calls and Commonwealth Cup third Flotus, while his Australian

champion sire son I Am Invincible made his mark through his son Brazen Beau supplying Norfolk Stakes winner The Ridler. Oasis Dream – like Invincible Spirit, a stalwart son of Green Desert, and like his Banstead Manor Stud colleague Kingman, a successful stallion from the Bahamian clan – also made his presence felt in myriad ways at the royal meeting. The Juddmonte champion sired Sandringham runner-up Zanbaq and Palace of Holyroodhouse third Peggy Sioux, and appeared as damsire of Royal Hunt Cup winner Dark Shift, Norfolk Stakes runner-up Walbank and Kensington Palace third Isola Rossa. The Oasis Dream sire-line was also shown to be taking shape with his son Showcasing delivering the dazzling Queen Mary Stakes scorer Dramatised, and the Whitsbury Manor Stud flagbearer’s first-season sire son Tasleet coming up with

decisive Coventry Stakes winner Bradsell among his first two-year-old runners. Invincible Spirit’s halfbrother Kodiac, a tried and trusted source of classy twoyear-olds and sprinters, was on the mark at the royal meeting as the sire of Walbank and as the paternal grandsire of Commonwealth Cup hero Perfect Power and Norfolk Stakes third Crispy Cat – both of whom are by Overbury Stud’s exciting second-season stallion Ardad. Tally-Ho Stud’s bulwark sire Kodiac is by Danehill, the chief agent of extending Danzig’s influence along with paternal half-brother Green Desert. His sire-line was once again in a rich vein of form at Ascot last week. One of Danehill’s sire sons, the late Dansili, got the Queen Alexandra Stakes winner Stratum, while two others, Exceed And Excel and Holy Roman Emperor, came up with Albany runner-up Mawj and Chesham runner-up Pearling Path respectively. Two of Danehill Dancer’s late stallion sons were on the mark with winners at the meeting – Mastercraftsman, courtesy of Coltrane in the Ascot Stakes (he was also the sire of Coronation Stakes third Discoveries), and Fast Company, thanks to Rising Star in the Kensington Palace Handicap. Sadly, neither Danehill Dancer nor his sons Mastercraftsman, Fast Company and Royal Ascot icon Choisir are with us any more; but on the bright side we do have ready access to Choisir’s brilliant sprinting son Starspangledbanner, who is in great form. The Coolmore resident was advertised to great effect by the admirable Prince of Wales’s Stakes victor State Of Rest and Palace of Holyroodhouse winner Latin Lover, as well as Flotus. Another son of Choisir worthy of breeders’ consideration is Haras de Bouquetot’s Olympic Glory. His daughter Grand Glory stayed on nicely into third behind State Of Rest in the Prince of Wales’s. Devastating King’s Stand Stakes winner Nature Strip represented a more unusual branch of the Danzig sire-line. The Australian raider is by Group 1-winning sprinter

Nicconi, who stands at Widden Stud in Victoria and is by Bianconi, a son of Danzig and blue hen Fall Aspen who won the Diadem Stakes for Aidan O’Brien. Two blue-chip sires from refreshingly different sire-lines registered winners at Royal Ascot this year. One was Dark Angel, by Acclamation, who delivered Sandringham scorer Heredia and Dark Shift, as well as Queen Anne runner-up Real World and Albany third Ivory Madonna. His son and former Yeomanstown studmate Gutaifan caught the eye with a couple of placed runners, in Wokingham runner-up Popmaster and Duke of Edinburgh third Contact. Mehmas is looking like the next big thing from the

Acclamation sire-line and Tally-Ho Stud’s prolific young sire proved once again that he can do quality as well as quantity with three sons who achieved podium finishes in the royal meeting’s elite races last week – Lusail, the runnerup in the St James’s Palace Stakes, Persian Force, second in the Coventry, and Acklam Express, who outran his odds in third in the Platinum Jubilee. Acclamation didn’t manage any winners of his own at this Royal Ascot, but as well as looking ever more like an important sire of sires he also distinguished himself as a broodmare sire, with his daughters producing winners Broome and Rohaan. The other top stallion with something different to offer in

the sire line and at the double last week was No Nay Never, a son of Scat Daddy who stands at Coolmore. The Ballydoyle pair Little Big Bear and Meditate, two-year-olds conceived in the afterglow of their sire becoming champion first-season sire at a fee of €100,000, won the Windsor Castle and Albany Stakes respectively. Sioux Nation, another Norfolk Stakes winner by Scat Daddy who joined No Nay Never on the Coolmore roster, is faring well as a freshman sire himself. Lakota Sioux was a strong-finishing third in the Chesham Stakes, while Brave Nation and Bakeel were hampered before finishing fourth and fifth in the Norfolk. to George Boughey’s team, bought for him by Sam Haggas’s Hurworth Bloodstock for reasonable prices over the winter, got a couple of other sires on the scoreboard. Pivotal’s son Inver Park continued his steep rate of progression for the Classicwinning trainer with victory in the Buckingham Palace Handicap, while Quality Road’s son Missed The Cut stormed to an impressive success in the Golden Gates Handicap. When it comes to delivering sheer brilliance, though, it’s hard to beat Urban Sea’s sons Galileo and Sea The Stars. Coolmore’s late sire phenomenon Galileo posted three winners last week – Kyprios in the Gold Cup, Changingoftheguard in the King Edward VII and Magical Lagoon in the Ribblesdale – and three thirds, in History (Ribblesdale), Okita Soushi (Copper Horse) and Sun King (Golden Gates). He is also the damsire of Stratum. Four of Galileo’s sons fielded winners at the meeting, including his successor as Britain and Ireland’s champion sire, Frankel, who was represented by arguably the most impressive scorer all week – the Coronation Stakes comeback queen Inspiral.

Frankel was also cast in a good light by Find and Mostahdaf, runners-up in the Jersey and Hardwicke, and Hurricane Lane, who made a highly satisfactory return at four when third in the Hardwicke. The Banstead

Manor Stud-based dual world champion also shone as the broodmare sire of Noble Truth. Australia’s son Broome was the horse who denied Mostahdaf and Hurricane Lane in the Hardwicke, and the Coolmore sire was also

represented by Queen Anne Stakes third Order Of Australia. Holloway Boy, a colt from the second crop of Cheveley Park Stud stallion Ulysses, sprang a surprise when winning the Chesham Stakes on his debut, while Get Shirty, by the ever-reliable Teofilo, took the Copper Horse Handicap. Teofilo is also the damsire of Coroebus and Queen Mary Stakes third Maria Branwell, who looks to be a fine advertisement for her firstseason sire James Garfield. Several other Galileo sire sons were there or thereabouts at Royal Ascot last week. Churchill’s son Grand Alliance so nearly denied his sire a winner when coming out second best in a finish of bobbing heads to the King Edward VII Stakes, having hung across the track, and the Nathaniel colt Zechariah nearly slipped the field in the Queen’s Vase but was collared on the line by Eldar Eldarov. Honourable mentions for a few other sons of Galileo go to Gleneagles, source of Ascot Stakes runner-up Bring On The Night and Coventry third Royal Scotsman, Intello, sire of Royal Hunt Cup runner-up Intellogent, and New Approach, whose son Lysander ran third in the King Edward VII Stakes. In a development that makes one feel thoroughly old, Galileo’s great-grandson Havana Grey is being represented by his first twoyear-old runners this season. The Whitsbury Manor Studbased Group 1-winning sprinter has been making a bright start, siring winners like shelling peas, and the good impression was confirmed at

Royal Ascot when daughter Maylandsea took second in the Queen Mary and son Eddie’s Boy ran third in the Windsor Castle Stakes. Galileo’s exceptional halfbrother Sea The Stars delivered only a solitary winner at this year’s meeting, but that one just happens to be the highest-rated turf horse in the world – Baaeed, who scored a comfortable success in the Queen Anne Stakes. The Gilltown Stud-based son of Cape Cross also got on the board through Gold Cup second and third Mojo Star and Stradivarius, Ribblesdale close second Sea Silk Road, Hampton Court Stakes runnerup Reach For The Moon and King George V second Deauville Legend. His daughters are also deepening his influence, and the high-class pair My Titania and Taghrooda produced winners Eldar Eldarov and Missed The Cut, as well as St James’s Palace Stakes third My Prospero (by Iffraaj) and King George V third Israr (by Muhaarar). So lethal are Galileo and Sea The Stars in middle-distance and staying contests that two races in a row on Ladies’ Day passed without any other sire managing to get in on the act. Magical Lagoon, Sea Silk Road and History filled the places in the Ribblesdale Stakes and 40 minutes later Kyprios, Mojo Star and Stradivarius dominated the finish to the Gold Cup. In fact, only three of the 15 horses who ran in both contests didn’t have Urban Sea in their pedigree. She truly was the mother of all broodmares.

2009 b m KingmamboLahudood (Singspiel) The Kingmambo mare represents the very best of Shadwell breeding, being out of Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine Lahudood, a descendant of the celebrated blue hen Height Of Fashion. She has maintained family honour in style, winning a Listed contest in France and producing two Group 1 winners, both by Sea The Stars – Baaeed, who took his unbeaten run to eight with victory in the Queen Anne, and Hukum, who took the Coronation Cup this month but first made a name for himself by winning the King George V Handicap two years ago on his third start.

Dorcas Lane

2008 ch m Norse DancerWaqood (Riverman) Dorcas Lane, a daughter of Norse Dancer descended from that great racemare Give Thanks, was a marvellous performer for her original trainer Lucy Wadham and owner Richard Keeley, winning the Pretty Polly Stakes and finishing third in the Lancashire Oaks and Prix de Psyche. She also ran a corker at Royal Ascot herself, coming third to Banimpire in the Ribblesdale. She was sold to Bjorn Nielsen, who bred from her the King George V Handicap winner Atty Persse, and resold again to Barnane Stud, who bred from her a second royal meeting winner in their six-length Duke of Edinburgh scorer Candleford.

Jacqueline Quest

2007 b m Rock Of GibraltarCoquette Rouge (Croco Rouge) Jacqueline Quest’s racing career is remembered for the wrong reasons, namely being demoted after finishing first past the post in the 1,000 Guineas and going a little sour at the end of her fouryear-old season. However, she put up one of her best efforts at Royal Ascot at three, when third to Lillie Langtry in the Coronation, and made better memories as a broodmare. The recently deceased daughter of Rock Of Gibraltar is the dam of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Line Of Duty, by Galileo, and now two Royal Ascot winners – Onassis in the Sandringham Handicap of 2020 and Secret State in the King George V this year. The siblings are both by Dubawi.

Polished Gem

2003 b m Danehill-Trusted Partner (Affirmed) Moyglare Stud’s late daughter of Danehill and Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Trusted Partner was in the shade of her Grade 1-winning fullsister Dress To Thrill on the track, as she managed to score only in a Leopardstown maiden, but she outdid her sibling at stud.

Polished Gem produced ten winners from as many runners and foals, and eight of those struck at black-type level, including two Royal Ascot Group 1 winners – Free Eagle in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and now Kyprios in the Gold Cup. It wasn’t far off being three winners at the meeting for the mare, as Falcon Eight was beaten less than two lengths into fourth in the Queen Alexandra.

Sweepstake

2005 b m Acclamation-Dust Flicker (Suave Dancer) Croom House Stud’s accomplished mare had an indifferent progeny record until she was matched with Australia. She has produced her two sole black-type horses to the sire – Point Lonsdale, who took the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2021, and Broome, who scored in the Hardwicke Stakes at the meeting this year. The mating represents a case of opposites attract, as Sweepstake was a Listed winner over five furlongs at two and hails from the first crop of Acclamation, while Australia is a stoutly bred son of Epsom Classic winners Galileo and Ouija Board who won the Derby himself.

ACING’S superpowers weren’t let down by their internal breeding systems at Royal Ascot 2022, with Godolphin and Coolmore enjoying plenty of homebred success. Godolphin tasted victory with three Dubawi sons out of their own mares – Coroebus in the St James’s Palace Stakes, Naval Crown in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes and Dubai Future in the Wolferton. Sheikh Mohammed’s operation also have an exciting homebred by former Kildangan Stud shuttler Exceed And Excel in Albany Stakes runner-up Mawj, and they made good use of their shares in Irish sires Dark Angel and Invincible Spirit to produce Queen Anne Stakes second Real World and Britannia runner-up Saga, who carries the silks of the Queen. Another branch of the Maktoum family’s racing and breeding empire fielded the best horse who competed at this year’s royal meeting, Shadwell’s brilliant Queen Anne Stakes winner Baaeed. The unbeaten four-year-old colt is by Sea The Stars, a sire who seems to suit the late Hamdan Al Maktoum’s mares down to the ground. He has also bred from the Gilltown Stud resident his exceptional Oaks and King George winner Taghrooda, from whom he bred last week’s King George V Handicap third Israr. Coolmore’s latest superstar by their much missed supersire Galileo is homebred Ribblesdale Stakes winner Magical Lagoon, a half-sister to brilliant middle-distance performer Novellist. The leviathan Irish operation also bred the second and third in the Copper Horse Handicap, Cleveland (by Camelot) and Okita Soushi (by Galileo). Cheveley Park Stud were perhaps the breeders of the meeting, with three winners headed by their impressive homebred Coronation Stakes heroine Inspiral. The renowned Newmarket nursery also bred and sold Chesham Stakes winner Holloway Boy, by one home sire in Ulysses, and Buckingham Palace Handicap scorer Inver Park, by another home sire in Pivotal. Tally-Ho Stud confirmed themselves commercial

How small players mixed it with the superpowers on the biggest stage masterminds at Royal Ascot through Commonwealth Cup hero Perfect Power, a son of Ardad (also a Royal Ascot winner bred by the O’Callaghan family) sold at the Goffs UK Breeze-Up Sale for £110,000; St James’s Palace Stakes runner-up Lusail, a son of home sire Mehmas and sold at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale for 160,000gns; and Norfolk Stakes runner-up Walbank, by Tally-Ho stalwart Kodiac and sold for a saletopping 525,000gns at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up in April. Among the other large-scale breeders who tasted success were Juddmonte with Britannia Handicap winner Thesis, Sandringham third Crenelle and Royal Hunt Cup third Tempus, all of whom are by home sire Kingman; Moyglare Stud with Gold Cup victor Kyprios, from a family nurtured by the operation for nigh on 50 years; and the Niarchos family with Royal Hunt Cup winner Dark Shift and Coronation Stakes third Discoveries, who both boast the breeders’ masterpiece Miesque in their pedigrees. Kirsten Rausing had a good meeting, having bred Queen’s Vase winner Eldar Eldarov and Wolferton third Harrovian from her iconic Alouette family. Eldar Eldarov is out of All At Sea, a Listed-winning daughter of Sea The Stars and German Group 1 winner Albanova, while Harrovian is out of Alma Mater, a Listedwinning Sadler’s Wells halfsister to Albanova. EST STATE OF R

ROHAAN

Osborne’s Tinnakill House Stud also enjoyed a purple patch, being represented by Prince of Wales’s Stakes hero State Of Rest and Golden Gates Handicap runner-up Asgoodassobergets. It’s not easy for smaller breeders to make an impact at Royal Ascot against the firepower of Godolphin, Coolmore and other leading breeders who have the means to purchase the best performing and most blue-blooded mares and send them to the priciest sires, but a select few managed to do so. Take a bow Deborah O’Brien, a North Yorkshirebased small breeder with seven mares, who produced Coventry Stakes winner Bradsell by sending her Listed-winning Archipenko mare Russian Punch to Tasleet when he was standing his first season at a fee of £6,000, and County Laois dairy farmer Liam Phelan, who paid just 37,000gns for the Listed-placed Acclamation mare Vive Les Rouges when she was carrying a pregnancy to Mayson that turned out to be repeat Wokingham winner Rohaan. Smarden Thoroughbreds really took the biscuit by breeding Norfolk Stakes winner The Ridler so inexpensively, though. He is the result of Colorada, a placed daughter of Lope De Vega bought for a mere 2,500gns at the Tattersalls February Sale of 2015, being sent to Brazen Beau when he stood his last northern hemisphere season at Dalham Hall Stud at a fee of just £7,000.

BLOODSTOCK SPECIAL ROYAL ASCOT REVIEW

T

HERE are few, if any, stages in global racing quite as significant as Royal Ascot, so results are certain to be pored over long after the dust has settled on the last of the meeting’s 35 races. On the riding and training fronts Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien dominated the headlines, but, for bloodstock aficionados and breeders alike, there is a much deeper backstory to delve into, with the winners hailing from a diverse range of backgrounds in terms of pedigree and price point. So, where did the 35 winners at this year’s meeting come from and who was responsible for the early steps they took on the way to stardom? Naturally, racing’s powerhouse operations were well represented among this year’s winners, but 22 of the horses successful at Ascot were offered at public auction before joining their current connections, and there was a huge variance in the sums they cost. The most expensive winner of the week was Group 3 Jersey Stakes scorer Noble Truth, who joined the all-conquering Godolphin team at a cost of €1,100,000 when he was offered by Haras de Capucines at the Arqana Select Sale in 2020. That sum is a long way clear of the second most expensive winner of the meeting, who was also purchased by Godolphin, as Sheikh Mohammed’s buying team gave 525,000gns for King George V Stakes winner Secret State, a half-brother to the operation’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf hero Line Of Duty. Although the combined sum that Noble Truth and Secret State cost is equal to 40 per cent of the total amount spent on the 20 winners who changed hands at public auction, big winners are ultimately what matter for an operation of Godolphin’s size, so the team will undoubtedly view that as money well spent. At the other end of the scale, Ardglas Stables, the County Tipperary breeze-up operation run by Ambrose O’Mullane and Mary Reynolds, deserves huge credit for unearthing Group 3 Hampton Court Stakes winner Claymore for just €5,000 at the Arqana October Yearling Sale, where the colt was offered by Haras d’Ombreville on behalf of breeder Guenther Schmidt. Unfortunately for the Ardglas team, the market failed to accurately value Claymore when he was resold at the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-Up Sale, as they received just £10,000 from the youngster’s original owner Mutlaq Menahi Almutairi. The son of New Bay was subsequently sold privately to Mary Slack, presumably for many multiples of what he cost as a two-year-old. Although he was subsequently sold privately to

THE KEY FIGURES

Royal Ascot facts and figures

Sales correspondent James Thomas examines the pedigrees and purchase prices of winners from across the big five days a partnership comprising Australia’s Newgate Farm, China Horse Club and Rathbarry Stud, State Of Rest was the ‘cheapest’ Group 1 winner of the week, having cost Aidan O’Ryan and Joseph O’Brien 60,000gns at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. Using the most recent public auction price, the average cost of this year’s Royal Ascot winners comes in at £187,660, which is remarkably similar to last year’s figure of £190,485. However, plenty proved that you do not need to spend a sixfigure sum to find a Royal Ascot winner if you know where to look. Among the buyers who highlighted their eye for a bargain were David O’Meara’s assistant trainer and chief talent scout Jason Kelly, who picked up Copper Horse Stakes winner Get Shirty for €30,000 at the Arqana Summer Sale; De Burgh Equine spent just £21,000 on Latin Lover, a Tattersalls Ireland September Sale graduate who gave young trainer Harry Eustace a day to remember with victory in the Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes; while David Evans and Martin Wanless parted with a mere 20,000gns to secure back-to-back Wokingham Stakes winner Rohaan when he came on the market at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses-inTraining Sale.

history of two Royal Ascot winners this week, as Sam Haggas, who operates under the Hurworth Bloodstock banner, had his talents advertised by George Boughey’s two winners in Inver Park and Missed The Cut, who won the Buckingham Palace Stakes and Golden Gates Stakes respectively. The former cost just £35,000 when offered by his previous trainer, Mick Quinn, at the Goffs UK December Horses-inTraining Sale, while the latter came from Barton Sales at the Tattersalls February Sale, where he was part of the extensive Shadwell dispersal. The son of Quality Road was signed for at 40,000gns as an unraced three-year-old, having joined the Shadwell fold at a cost of $400,000 at Keeneland in November 2019. Blandford Bloodstock also signed for two of the meeting’s big winners, with the Newmarket-based agency’s Richard Brown responsible for sourcing Commonwealth Cup victor Perfect Power at £110,000, while his colleague Tom Biggs went to £47,000 for impressive Group 2 Coventry Stakes winner Bradsell. Both colts came from the Goffs UK Breeze-Up Sale, with Perfect Power offered by Tally-Ho Stud in 2021 and Bradsell consigned by Mark Grant Racing earlier this year. The Highflyer Bloodstock fingerprints were also found on two winners, with Anthony Bromley having signed alongside Harry Dunlop at 12,000gns for Bradsell at the

the colours of Primavera, a syndicate put together by Biggs and Archie Watson. The agent also signed for last-gasp Group 2 Queen’s Vase winner Eldar Eldarov, who was picked up on behalf of KHK Racing for £480,000 when offered by Norman

Noble Truth speeds to success in last week’s Group 3 Jersey Stakes

Williamson’s Oak Tree Farm at the relocated Arqana BreezeUp Sale in 2021. St Lawrence was also the first person to sign for dual Wokingham Stakes winner Rohaan, having gone to £36,000 for the son of Mayson at the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale in 2019 before he was moved on to current connections, namely Chris Kiely and James Tomkins, at the Tattersalls Autumn Horsesin-Training Sale after just two outings for George Scott. Victorious Racing was also represented by Windsor Castle Stakes second Rocket Rodney, while Chesham Stakes runnerup Pearling Path carried the colours of Fawzi Nass after St Lawrence bought the son of Holy Roman Emperor at last year’s Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale for £80,000. Trainer Karl Burke and his daughter Kelly also deserve their share of the plaudits having sourced shock Chesham Stakes scorer Holloway Boy, who made a winning debut in the Listed contest after being picked up for 60,000gns at Book 2. The son of Ulysses’ success continued the Burke family’s impressive Royal Ascot strikerate with value acquisitions, as Kelly signed for 2020 Albany Stakes winner Dandalla at €22,000, while Karl bought 2016 Commonwealth Cup hero Quiet Reflection for £44,000. The father-daughter duo also combined to secure Significantly, winner of the 5f heritage handicap now known as the Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes, at £52,000. While there are plenty of agents coming away from Royal Ascot toasting a job well done, there must also be one or two who have been left kicking themselves after seeing what transpired, as two of the headline performers went to public auction but failed to find a buyer.

King’s Stand Stakes hero Nature Strip was passed in at A$90,000 (£51,000/€59,000) when offered at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale and spent time with a number of trainers before reaching the Chris Waller stable, while Kensington Palace Stakes winner Rising Star, who was bred at Glebe Farm Stables by the Ile Flottante Syndicate, was a vendor buyback at €7,500 as a weanling before failing to sell when the bidding reached just 14,000gns at the Tattersalls Ascot Breeze-Up in 2020.

Home sweet homebred While 22 of the meeting’s winners were offered at public auction, and two, Ascot Stakes winner Coltrane and King Edward VII Stakes victor Changingoftheguard, appear to have been purchased privately, the remaining 11 were racing in the colours of their breeder. Godolphin was the most prolific breeder of the meeting, with Sheikh Mohammed’s three homebred successes including two in Group 1 company, namely St James’s Palace hero Coroebus and Platinum Jubilee Stakes winner Naval Crown, both of whom are by the operation’s linchpin stallion Dubawi, as is Dubai Future who rounded off the hat-trick in the Listed Wolferton Stakes. Godolphin also bred three runners-up in Albany Stakes second Mawj, Real World, who gave best only to Shadwell’s brilliant homebred Baaeed in the Queen Anne Stakes, and Saga, who was gifted to the Queen and finished fast, beaten a rapidly diminishing head, behind Thesis in the Britannia Stakes. Cheveley Park Stud also had a meeting to remember having bred three winners, including the hugely impressive Coronation Stakes heroine Inspiral. The Thompson family’s esteemed operation was also responsible for Holloway Boy and Inver Park, both of whom were sold as yearlings. Other major owner-breeders featured among the winners too, with Moyglare Stud’s late blue hen Polished Gem supplying Gold Cup hero Kyprios, who is by Galileo and owned in tandem with the Coolmore partners, while aforementioned Thesis struck in the Britannia for Juddmonte. Although the decline of the owner-breeder has been much discussed in recent times, with some significant names either reducing numbers or leaving the industry altogether, it was encouraging to see some younger operations make their mark with a Royal Ascot winner. Arguably the most important of those performances came from Dramatised, who maintained her unbeaten record with a dominant success in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes. The daughter of Showcasing carried the familiar all-grey colours of

Clipper Logistics, and provided owner Steve Parkin with a first homebred Group success from his 300-acre Branton Court Stud in North Yorkshire. Dramatised is the third foal out of Katie’s Diamond, who joined the Branton Court broodmare band at a cost of 190,000gns when purchased by Parkin’s racing and bloodstock manager Joe Foley. The daughter of Turtle Bowl visited Whitsbury Manor Stud’s Showcasing in 2019, when his fee was a career-high £55,000. Also striking at Group 2 level was The Ridler, who won the Norfolk Stakes for Steve Bradley and Hilary Fitzsimons’ Smarden Thoroughbreds. The upwardly mobile colt was a real triumph for budget breeding as he is by former Dalham Hall Stud shuttle stallion Brazen Beau, who stood for just £7,000 in the season The Ridler was conceived, and is out of the Lope De Vega mare Colorada, who was picked up by Fitzsimons for a mere 2,500gns at the Tattersalls February Sale in 2016. There were also big results for Andrew Stone’s St Albans Bloodstock and the Kieswetter family’s Barnane Stud, with the former fielding the unbeaten Sandringham Stakes winner Heredia, while the latter was responsible for runaway Duke of Edinburgh Stakes scorer Candleford. Heredia is by Yeomanstown Stud’s kingpin sire Dark Angel, who stood for €85,000 the year the filly was conceived, and she is the first foal out of Nakuti, who was bought for Stone by Blandford Bloodstock at a cost of $200,000 at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale in 2016. Candleford provided the Kieswetters with their first homebred success from Barnane Stud in County Tipperary after they purchased the dam, Dorcas Lane, carrying the son of Kingman in utero at 320,000gns in 2017. Dorcas Lane, a daughter of Norse Dancer, was supplying her second Royal Ascot winner as her first foal is none other than 2017 King George V Stakes scorer Atty Persse. While Candleford got the Kieswetters off the mark at Barnane Stud, the family are no strangers to success in their native South Africa, where they stand stallions such as Canford Cliffs and Rafeef at their Ridgemont Highlands operation. In total, 19 of the successful breeders purchased the dam of their winner at public auction, with prices ranging from the 2,500gns given for The Ridler’s dam Colorada, right through to Night Lagoon, who produced the Coolmore-bred Ribblesdale Stakes winner Magical Lagoon and cost BBA Ireland $1.7 million at FasigTipton in 2014. The average price of those 19 mares who changed hands at public auction was £270,995.
