That’s it!Aseasonofexciting newtalentand rosy futures
ALONG season is over Lookingbackatthe campaign,it’ssafe to saywesaw alot of excitingtalent. Nearly everyweekend therewere eyecatchingperformancesthat suggestedbig futures
That view wasbackedupbythe many expensivepurchases we saw through the sales season. Of course, it will be awhile beforewediscover who gotthe best valueand whowill be left countingthe cost.
Foravariety of reasons, the reality is that some of the horseswho made fancyprices will fail to deliver on the hopes held outfor them. That’s just the natureofa riskybusiness.
Because there’ssomuch at stake thesedays, the majorhandlers are very conscious of the risk of overexposingtheir horses.Manyinthe mostinfluential nurseriesare destinedtobesold when theyhave runonly once, twice at most It’s like aconstantconveyorbelt. Some point-to-pointenthusiasts may regret theydon’t getthe chance to followthe progressofa young horse anymore. It’s typically acaseofa debutwin, done and dusted, and gone. It’sasituation that impacts the number of runners too, with smaller fields atrend in the crucial four-yearoldand five-year-old maidens
Still, it’s beenasuccessful season overall, and the spateof cancellations duringadifficult spell meanttherewerestill enough runners to go around rightuptothe end of the season and the final decision of titles and honours
In lastweek’scolumn, Idiscussed the rivalrybetweenRob James and BarryO’Neill and howthe 2023-24 riders’title still hung in the balance.I expectedtheir duel to be the big storyofthe final weekend and I’m sure many enthusiasts were looking forward to seeinghow the head-tohead would turn out.
Lookingatitfromthat angle it’s unfortunatewedidn’tget the chance to see twopopular and wellrespectedridersbring it all the way to the end. However, Iunderstand whythesetwo closefriends and colleagues decidedtolet things stand after the penultimateweekend hadleftthem levelonthe 39-winner mark.
They’retwo tough competitors and you canbesureitwas not a decision theytook lightly. They canboth look backonthe achievementwith pride Barryhas kept his grip on the title he’s held

Through the season, it wasgood to see plenty of new names comingon the scene, maleand female. Many handlers arenow prepared to give youth achanceand to develop talent in-house, offeringopportunities that were not alwaysthereinthe past. Foryoung riders, there’sno substitute for race-ridingexperience Ridingwinners accelerates the learningprocess, providedthat the young jockeykeeps his or her feet on the ground and maintains alevelheadedattitude
This season’sunder-21 title was foughtoverbytwo riders whohave shown the rightqualities. This was the one title for which the last weekend proved vital, with Shane Cotter getting twowinsonthe board without reply from Dara McGill. Formuch of theseason, Dara was in pole positiontoretain the title However, Shane enjoyed abrilliant second half havingridden his first winner at Lingstownasrecently as lastDecember.

For that alone, itwould have beentough on him if he hadlostout on thefinal weekend.
Other battles continuedto the end. With Maxine O’Sullivan ruledout of action since sufferinga fall at Dawstown early in themonth, the weekend fixturesgaveSusie Doyleachancetowin thelady riders’ title outright with twomounts suppliedbyher father Pat.
On Saturday, she gave City Slippers apositiveride in amaiden at

On Sunday, she went to Inchydoneytoride the consistentI Mask Du Poitier. Again, it wasthe Bowe-Finn combination that gotin the way. This time the muchimproved Loughrea winner Divilskin did the damage, winning comfortably by eightlengths Honours even, afair outcomeat the end of aseason in which14 individual women ridershad winners, includingthree who enjoyed successonthe final weekend: Sophie Carter on Haggard for Colin Bowe at Ballingarry,Joanna Corish on DieseDes Bieffes for CormacDoyle at the same venue, and Georgie Benson, who rode fouryear-old winner Long Branch for
